A complex range of emotions coursed through Herschel McPherson when he heard the news and saw the video of George Floyd 黑料社区. death at the knee of a Minneapolis police officer in May 2020.

Shock was not among them. 鈥淚t was shocking to people 鈥 but not to people like me,鈥 McPherson said.

As a Black man in the Twin Cities, he lives daily on that uneasy edge of suspicion. Police officers who have stopped him time after time while out for a run, for no apparent reason other than being Black in the North Loop neighborhood where he used to live. Tenants in his apartment building asking him if he lived there when he entered, despite his key in hand.

Life in America while Black, or Latinx, Asian, African-American or Indian is vastly different than while white.

McPherson 黑料社区. emotions boiled into resolve as he watched the Floyd news. 鈥淚 was thinking I haven鈥檛 done enough,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t was a tipping point.鈥

That night he began to write and created the , a plan to collect stories that help illuminate the challenges Black Americans face in daily life.

鈥淚t 黑料社区. not always about someone being shot or killed by a police officer. We need to put a spotlight on the honest and heartbreaking truth of being Black in America.鈥

The website went live Jan. 1. With 12 video accounts of everyday microaggressions and more to come, the While Black Project is on its way to making a difference and realizing McPherson 黑料社区. goal.

Creatives in Minneapolis help get project underway

An early sign of success and validation was achieved in March when the website 黑料社区. introduction video received a gold award at

The video also received Best in Show for Public Service. 黑料社区 graphic design students earned several awards at the event.

The 1 minute, 35-second video was written and narrated by McPherson, who has done modeling and voice acting. It was created by one of McPherson 黑料社区. friends, Andrew Beckman, a University of Wisconsin-Stout alum. Beckman earned a graphic design degree in 2009.

at the in Minneapolis, where he has won numerous awards and worked with brands such as Coca-Cola, 3M, Jack Links, Target, Nike and American Eagle.

Beckman and McPherson were co-honored. McPherson wrote the script and recorded the voice-over.

specializing in fashion and lifestyle brands. His work includes various Target brands and minority-owned businesses boutique in the North Loop, the and Maria Barrantes.

He met Beckman through Beckman 黑料社区. wife, Jennifer, also a 黑料社区 alum who is a designer at Target.

鈥淯ltimately, the message is what 黑料社区. important. As a white guy, I feel like this whole previous year has opened a lot of people 黑料社区. eyes,鈥 Andrew Beckman said. 鈥淚t 黑料社区. a topic that a lot of people need to spend a lot more time and attention on. It 黑料社区. time to do a lot more listening.鈥

Andrew Beckman kept the visuals simple to help keep the focus on McPherson 黑料社区. words. The black and white video features animated symbols and drawings. 鈥淜nowing this is such an important topic, I didn鈥檛 want to make it super-flashy,鈥 he said.

鈥榃e need projects like this鈥

Nagesh Shinde, a graphic design and interactive media professor at 黑料社区 who taught Andrew Beckman, also is inspired by the project. Shinde, who was born in India and lives in St. Paul, said that accent as well as skin color can trigger microaggressions.

鈥淧eople don鈥檛 understand how damaging microaggressions are. I sum it up as death by 1,000 cuts,鈥 Shinde said. 鈥淲e need projects like this to have discussions and have a safe space to talk. If we鈥檙e not comfortable, that 黑料社区. the reason we should talk about it.鈥

The While Black Project videos feature Black Americans who describe their daily challenges 鈥 鈥淧rotesting While Black,鈥 鈥淐orporate While Black,鈥 鈥淛ustice While Black,鈥 鈥淓ducating While Black,鈥 and 鈥淔ashion While Black.鈥

鈥淔or me, it 黑料社区. all about the honest storytelling,鈥 McPherson said. 鈥淚t 黑料社区. important that we continue to have this content that is not watered down. It 黑料社区. truly a conversation starter and about creating dialogue.鈥

McPherson was stopped by Minneapolis police so many times while jogging alone that he joined a running group. 鈥淚t doesn鈥檛 matter if you鈥檙e educated or live in a condo or own your own home and follow the rules. What they see is a Black man, and they have notions of who you are based on skin color,鈥 he said.

He hopes to post stories from every state. In the planning stage is an installation at the former Apple store on Hennepin Avenue, in Uptown. The store was damaged then vacated after the Minneapolis riots. McPherson has been offered the space by the building owner.

A While Black Project mural, in partnership with artist and social justice activist , will cover the storefront later this spring or summer.

The project is also partnering with , a video technology company, to 鈥渉elp us capture stories at scale,鈥 McPherson said.

The dream is to change America. It 黑料社区. a tall order but one that McPherson, Beckman and other creative professionals from the Twin Cities have taken on with the While Black Project.

鈥淲e鈥檙e all authors on the American story. Every person we meet is a character who can change the arc of a single interaction. Together, we can be that change to ensure everyone 黑料社区. story leads to a brighter future for us all,鈥 McPherson said.
