“Ever since I stepped foot on campus, I felt welcomed and knew I wanted to be part of this amazing #StoutProud community,” said Breyden, a double major in real estate property management (REPM) and hotel, restaurant and tourism management (HRTM). “I love all the connections I’ve made through my Stout journey. I cannot be more grateful for the relationships I’ve built with faculty, industry partners and friends.”

For Breyden, the �� experience has been as much about a vibrant campus community as it has been about academics. The supportive environment, faculty mentorship and opportunities to engage with industry professionals have all shaped a foundation for his success. “People have always shown me kindness and have gone above and beyond to help me in my personal and professional growth,” Breyden said.

Through involvement in clubs like the Institute of Real Estate Management, the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International, and the Club Management Association of America, Breyden has gained hands-on experience and built invaluable professional networks. Outside the classroom, learning opportunities such as property tours, industry events and the Club Management Association World Conference provided exposure to real-world practices, giving Breyden the confidence and knowledge to excel in his field.

“Stout is setting me up for success,” Breyden said. “It allows me to meet professionals, ask questions, and gain insights that I couldn’t anywhere else. I’ve also made lifelong friends and professional connections that I will collaborate with throughout my career.”

Philanthropic support has been critical in making these experiences possible. Crucial flexible funds, made possible by donors, have allowed Breyden to focus fully on academics and professional development without added financial stress. “Because of donors, I’ve been able to pursue not only my education, but also skills like professional communication, interviewing and networking,” Breyden said. “These may sound simple, but they’ve made me stand out as I interviewed for an internship and prepared me to succeed in my career.”

Some of Breyden ��. most meaningful memories involve giving back to the campus community. As a second-year student, Breyden presented to fellow students about his internship experience, sharing advice and insights with peers. “Seeing the new students approach me with questions and knowing I could inspire them was incredible,” Breyden said.

Breyden ��. story reflects a broader truth at ��: philanthropy doesn’t just support a student ��. education; it strengthens the community, expands learning opportunities and helps students build the confidence and connections they need to thrive. Through donor generosity, students gain access to applied learning, mentorship, networking opportunities and career-preparing experiences that set them apart in their fields.

Linda John has helped shape communities through her work in the tourism industry and with destination management organizations (DMOs) for more than three decades, both locally and across the country. From transforming Eau Claire ��. identity to advising DMOs nationwide, her work has influenced how communities position themselves, how leaders develop and how tourism drives long-term economic vitality.

Today, her influence continues at a national and global level. As a member of the Certified Destination Management Executive (CDME) Board of Directors for Destinations International, the world ��. largest resource for destination organizations, she supports professional education and leadership development for professionals across the industry. In addition to being a certified destination marketing executive, Linda is a certified executive coach.

Linda ��. career and leadership began and evolved at the community and regional level. During her 27-year tenure leading Visit Eau Claire, she helped shift the region from a traditional tourism model to a community defined by culture and creativity. Under her leadership, music became a defining element of the city ��. identity, amplified by nationally recognized artists like Bon Iver and strengthened through major music festivals and events, which helped draw visitors while showcasing the region ��. creative energy. By elevating arts and music as part of the area ��. identity and aligning tourism with economic development, she helped position Eau Claire as a destination people actively choose not just to visit but to invest in and call home. These efforts helped position Eau Claire within a broader national conversation about how mid-sized communities can leverage music and the arts as drivers of tourism and economic growth.

“Create a place where people want to live, and people will want to visit,” Linda said.

From evolving visitor engagement by transitioning from physical spaces to digital platforms and mobile experiences, including the creation of a mobile “Eau Claire-Stream” Airstream stage that took local musicians and the region ��. story on the road, her work extended far beyond destination marketing. It was about building systems and relationships that could sustain growth over time.

While leading Visit Eau Claire Linda continued investing in her own growth, earning her master ��. degree in Training and Human Resource Development from �� in 2016. Drawn to understanding people and relationships, she chose a path that deepened her ability to lead and influence others.

“I was fascinated by people, relationships and interactions,” she said. "We are operating in a time of unprecedented change, especially within the tourism industry. The pace isn’t slowing down; it ��. accelerating. And with that acceleration comes not just opportunity, but real pressure on leaders and teams to adapt, often without a clear roadmap. If I can help individuals and organizations not just respond to change, but lead through it with clarity and confidence, then I know I’m contributing at the level that today ��. moment demands.”

That decision proved pivotal. Her graduate education opened the door to coaching certifications and expanded her ability to create impact not just within a single community but across organizations and industries. In 2020, Linda departed Visit Eau Claire and began her work through her own consulting business, Linda John Consulting, and Fired Up! Culture, an organizational development firm. In these roles, she partners with DMOs and other industries across North America to strengthen leadership, build healthy workplace cultures and create sustainable systems for growth. Her approach centers on helping leaders develop self-awareness, navigate change and align strategy with people, work that continues to shape organizations at scale.

“At the end of the day, the impact I hope to have is deeply human,” she said. “If I can help them feel more grounded, more capable and more aligned in that work, then the ripple effect extends far beyond any one individual.”

Connection has been a defining thread throughout her career; one she continues to see reflected across the tourism industry through fellow Stout graduates. “I run into Stout graduates all over the country,” she said. “Being a Stout graduate means connection, community and friendships everywhere. It also represents a quality education and a shared understanding of who we are as professionals.”

Whether she is coaching executives, advising organizations or helping emerging leaders grow, Linda ��. focus remains on creating an impact that extends beyond any one role or community. Her work reflects the importance of strong relationships, strategic thinking and a commitment to helping others reach their full potential.

Kole Mewhorter, a business administration and supply chain management alum from ��, is being honored as an Institute for Supply Management 2025 ISM 30 Under 30 Rising Supply Chain Star.

Mewhorter, a demand planner at H.B. Fuller, a leading global adhesives provider headquartered in Vadnais Heights, Minnesota, is among the 30 exceptional young professionals awarded by ISM for making a measurable impact across supply chain, procurement and operations roles worldwide.

“These rising leaders reflect the strength and future of the supply management profession,” said Debbie Fogel-Monnissen, interim chief executive officer of ISM. “Their curiosity, discipline and commitment to continuous improvement are helping organizations navigate complexity and build more resilient, forward-looking supply chains.”

Now in its 12th year, the ISM 30 Under 30 program recognizes individuals who demonstrate leadership, collaboration, innovation and a commitment to advancing the supply management profession.

Mewhorter and other honorees will be celebrated at the Awards Gala during the ISM World Annual Conference, April 26-28 in Denver, Colorado. Honorees this year are from the United States, Brazil, France, India, Kenya, Malaysia and United Kingdom. They represent manufacturing, pharmaceutical, aerospace and defense, oil and gas, business services and other industries.

“Receiving this award means that there is a sense of what I am doing day-to-day is meaningful. Earning a global recognition justifies to me that I can continue to make a difference. I am proud of that,” said Mewhorter, a 2022 alum.

Continuing to push for innovation and improvement in supply chain

Through his work, Mewhorter reflects a deep sense of ownership, a forward-looking mindset and a commitment to elevating operational excellence. He began at H.B. Fuller as a buyer/scheduler a month after graduation and was promoted to demand planner seven months later.

Mewhorter continues to support improvement initiatives at H.B. Fuller, upholding the mission of Connecting What Matters. “This is done by bringing people, processes and products together to purposefully solve problems. A key part of this is with Supply Chain Excellence to become the best supplier to our customers,” he said.

H.B. Fuller partners with an estimated 5,000 to 10,000 clients and continues to establish more partnerships within the company.

During H.B. Fuller ��. transition to a regionally led supply chain structure, Mewhorter played a key role in developing the North America regional demand planning team — one of the foundational building blocks of the company ��. new operating model.

He independently created and implemented a standardized demand review process, setting clear performance expectations while meeting structure and forecasting guidelines, increasing accuracy in every business segment he works with.

“The North America demand planning team provides detailed insight into how we review our capacity/utilization, and where and how much stock we hold. It supports how much production needs to be scheduled, and how much raw materials our sourcing department needs to procure,” Mewhorter said. “It also impacts various projects that come up. Our demand planning department was not mature, and in the past two years or so, we have established ourselves as a respected seat at the table. I am proud of being a key contributor to that.”

Mewhorter also built a suite of key performance indicators (KPIs) and analytical tools, including integrated performance dashboards and enhanced reporting. These tools improved forecast visibility and enabled stronger operational decision-making.

Partnering closely with operations and commercial teams, he works directly with plant leadership, supply managers, and commercial directors to resolve complex issues and align customer demand with production capabilities and business strategy.

Mewhorter supported the rollout and adoption of a new stocking strategy framework and contributed to stock-keeping unit (SKU) rationalization initiatives. He has strengthened forecast-to-revenue alignment by collaborating with finance and commercial teams to develop more accurate, transparent methods for translating demand signals into revenue projections. He designs scalable tools, improves complex processes, and creates resources that accelerate learning and adoption across the company ��. global supply chain organization.

To build alignment among different stakeholders, Mewhorter sets clear expectations around what type of information needs to be communicated and how, knowing that it is critical to understand the deliverables or information that each stakeholder requires.

“Overcommunicate everything,” he said. “It is better to pull people in versus leaving them out. They may have a different perspective or concern that could be critical. At H.B. Fuller, we pride ourselves on the ‘Power of Collaboration.’ This is not something that can be taught, but it is a culture.

“We have a culture that positively supports the idea of ‘We are in this together.’ It is amazing, and I wouldn’t be effective at my job if I did not regularly collaborate with various parties,” he said.

Mewhorter feels motivated to continue pushing for innovation and improvement in supply chain because there is always room for improvement, knowing that the work he has done has driven positive impacts.

“This motivates me to keep the ball rolling. I also am always thinking about the direction of our business, and to get there we need to continue to optimize our supply chain operations,” he said. “Supply chain is becoming more critical every day and the only constant in this profession is change. The companies that will thrive when there are economic changes are the ones that have strong supply chains. The people within their supply chain organizations need to adapt.

“I see the future of supply chain becoming one of the most critical departments within an organization. This is because of advancements in AI, new tools and technologies, and an ever-changing economic environment. Strong supply chain departments will persevere through difficult economic activity and effectively adopt new technology,” Mewhorter said.

Prepared to work anywhere and be a valuable employee

Originally, Mewhorter wanted to attend a university that was close to his hometown of Chippewa Falls, and he heard about �� . business administration program. During his first semester in that program, he learned about supply chain and was immediately intrigued.

“I was mostly amazed with how supply chain deals with end-to-end business activity; from buying raw materials to shipping to the customer and everything in between,” he said. “From that point on, I pursued a double major in business administration and supply chain management. I knew I could work anywhere and be a valuable employee.”

Mewhorter felt challenged, encouraged and supported by his peers and professors, including Program Director Gene Gutman. “There was an aura that what you were going through was extremely difficult, but you could do it, and it would benefit you down the road. My experiences at Stout helped me to stay driven, collected, and effective in the workplace when difficult scenarios arise,” he said.

“I am StoutProud that I went to a university that challenged me more than other universities. I got firsthand experience with professionals that prepared me to be effective in the workplace. It wasn’t just lectures and exams. It was opportunities to think critically, problem-solve and execute on deliverables. The polytechnic approach is so effective, and I am grateful for that,” Mewhorter added.

Jim and Nancy Bensen have spent a lifetime shaping institutions, strengthening communities and opening doors for others in ways that continue to ripple outward today.

Jim ��. connection to University of Wisconsin-Stout spans from graduate student to Distinguished Professor and Dean where he led transformational growth, including a period in which enrollment tripled, helped launch the Stout Technology Park and advanced applied research and industry partnerships. A Distinguished Alumni Award recipient in 1991, his influence helped position Stout as a national leader in applied learning. That same forward-thinking approach extended beyond campus. In Bemidji, Minnesota, his leadership helped fuel a nationally recognized model for community innovation, expanding entrepreneurship programs and supporting the creation of dozens of new ventures.

Nancy ��. work transformed lives on an individual level, building education programs that empowered adult learners, English language learners and employees to gain critical skills, retain employment and pursue new opportunities, often restoring confidence along the way. Together, their impact spans both systems and people, strengthening communities across generations.

That shared commitment to growth and to people has defined their journey together from the very beginning. High school sweethearts from Erskine, Minnesota, Jim and Nancy built their lives guided by that mindset, evolving together while supporting one another ��. ambitions.

“We’ve just tried to keep growing together, supporting each other along the way and staying open to what comes next,” Nancy said.

Jim and Nancy started their academic journeys in higher education while raising a young family. Nancy taught while finishing her degree, and Jim began to see a broader future in education and leadership that would take shape at University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Jim came to Stout to pursue his master ��. degree and returned as a faculty member, where he quickly became a driver for change. He helped lead a complete transformation of the industrial education curriculum, modernizing programs to reflect emerging technologies and workforce needs. As his leadership grew, so did his impact. He helped establish research centers with global reach, launched one of the nation ��. first university-based business incubators and led the development of the Stout Technology Park, creating a lasting connection between industry and the university.

“We were always looking ahead, asking what students would need next and how we could get there first,” Jim said. “Stout really gave me the opportunity to think differently. That mindset stayed with me throughout my career.”

Bemidji State University

Nancy forged her own path at Stout, earning her master ��. degree in guidance and counseling. She applied that foundation in innovative ways, designing programs centered on individualized learning and human connection. Through her leadership in adult education, she built a program that expanded into a comprehensive resource serving learners from all backgrounds, from those seeking GED completion to employees adapting to rapidly changing industries.

Nancy explained, "My experience at Stout helped me see the importance of meeting people where they are. Not everyone learns the same way, and that really stayed with me as I worked with adult learners.”

Nancy ��. approach was rooted in trust and respect, where learners progressed at their own pace and gained not only skills, but confidence. Her work proved especially impactful in workforce training, helping employees transition into more technical roles while allowing companies to grow and retain their workforce.

Bemidji State University

Their shared belief in growth and innovation carried forward as Jim went on to serve as president of Dunwoody College of Technology and later Bemidji State University. In each role, he challenged traditional approaches and created new pathways for students and communities.

In retirement, that work evolved into community transformation. Through BemidjiLeads!, Jim helped guide long-term, forward-thinking planning for more than 20 years. The initiative helped grow an entrepreneurship program from just seven participants to more than 250 in its first four years, supported the launch of 51 new companies and sparked more than two dozen community ventures. The model expanded to 17 communities across Minnesota and helped Bemidji earn recognition from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as one of the most innovative communities in the nation.

“We’ve always talked about planning from the future. Where do you want to be and what do you want your community to look like? Then you work back from that and figure out how to get there. When people can see that future, they start to believe in it,” Jim said.

For both Jim and Nancy, their connection to University of Wisconsin-Stout remains central. It was at Stout where ideas were tested, opportunities were created and their shared commitment to growth took root. “Stout had a tremendous impact on both of us. It shaped how we think about education, about people and about what ��. possible. It ��. where we learned to keep growing and to help others do the same,” they said.

For Eli, �� isn’t just a place to earn a degree, it is a place where possibility replaced uncertainty. Through applied learning, mentorship and critical financial support, Eli, a first-generation student, transformed from a student searching for direction into a confident, emerging artist with a clear vision for the future. Many of these experiences were made possible by donor generosity.

When Eli first arrived at ��, the plan seemed clear: pursue a major in animation and build a future in that field. But it didn’t take long to realize that animation wasn’t where Eli ��. passion lived. What truly called to Eli was painting and the possibility of using art as a means of healing. That realization led to a pivotal change declaring a studio art major with a concentration in painting and a minor in psychology.

Originally working toward a career in art therapy, Eli ��. path continued to evolve through immersive studio experiences. With each class, critique and collaborative project, confidence grew.

“Being surrounded by other artists and dedicated faculty who challenged and supported me changed everything,” Eli said. “I started to see my potential and the value of my work.”

“�� . polytechnic model changed my life,” Eli said. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the experiences and support I received. Such opportunities gave me confidence, clarity and a path forward.”

Philanthropic support played a crucial role in making Eli ��. journey possible. Financial assistance provided stability and access, allowing Eli to focus fully on learning and creative exploration.

One of the most transformative moments for Eli came when they were awarded the Bud and Betty Micheels Student Artist-in-Residence grant. The residency provides funding to sustain creative research and experimentation, an invaluable opportunity in a discipline where materials and resources can be costly.

For more than a decade, James Condon built a career delivering luxury hospitality experiences in one of the world ��. busiest international business hubs. Working across multiple luxury properties in southern China, including with global brands like InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) and Rosewood Hotel Group, Condon helped create memorable experiences for guests from around the world, contributing to the level of service and reputation luxury hotels depend on to attract global travelers and business leaders.

Condon ��. journey to an international hospitality career began long before those moments in China. While pursuing his associate ��. degree in Minnesota, Professor and �� alumnus Barney Klecker (’73, ’76) asked him what he planned to do after graduation. “I told him I wasn’t very interested in working in Minnesota,” Condon said. “To be completely honest, I didn’t really want to work in the United States at all. I wanted to go international.”

Klecker connected him with an alumnus working in China and Condon was invited to join a hospitality team in Guangzhou, one of southern China ��. busiest commercial and manufacturing regions. When he arrived, Condon quickly realized the scale of the opportunity. Instead of working under a single hotel manager, he found himself supporting a regional general manager overseeing dozens of properties across South China for IHG.

After his first year overseas, a change in Chinese employment regulations required international hospitality professionals to hold a bachelor ��. degree in the field. That requirement brought Condon back to Wisconsin. Determined to return to his career abroad as quickly as possible, Condon transferred to �� to complete his hospitality management degree. What normally would take two years, he finished in just 15 months. He credits Stout ��. faculty with supporting his goal and understanding the urgency behind it.

“Every professor along the way was 100 percent supportive of my goal,” he said. “When they saw what I had going on, they understood how important it was for me to finish and get back to my career.”

After graduating, he returned to China and spent nearly a decade working across multiple luxury properties in Guangzhou. Over time he worked in six different hotels, often stepping in where teams needed additional leadership or operational support to maintain the level of service expected at international luxury properties. The city itself offered a unique environment for hospitality professionals. With more than 20 million residents and a reputation as a global business center, Guangzhou attracts visitors and professionals from around the world. For hospitality teams, that environment requires anticipating the needs of international travelers and delivering consistently exceptional service.

Later in his career, Condon joined the luxury brand Rosewood, known for its premier service and luxury accommodations. The company ��. philosophy emphasized providing guests with whatever they needed to create an extraordinary experience. Condon saw that philosophy play out firsthand one evening when a neighboring hotel asked if his team could host one of their most loyal guests, a prominent international businessman whose usual bar was closed for the night. Condon met the guest at the door, coordinated with the bar staff and musicians and ensured he had a table near the stage. What began as a quick drink turned into an evening of live music, conversation and a dinner invitation for the following night with the performers and culinary team. The guest became a regular visitor, even bringing colleagues and industry leaders along, turning a single evening into a lasting relationship with the hotel. For Condon, the moment was a shining example of one of hospitality ��. biggest lessons: a single thoughtful interaction can create a ripple effect, creating relationships that last far beyond one night.

After more than a decade overseas, Condon returned to the United States to be closer to family. Today he stays connected to �� as a program advisory board member, bringing the same guidance and support he once received from faculty to the next generation of hospitality professionals. By sharing lessons from his global career, he helps students navigate challenges, seize opportunities and develop the skills needed to thrive in the industry.

Condon encourages students take initiative and embrace every chance to learn. “Don’t wait for someone to tell you what to do,” he said. “Jump in and help. The faster people see what you can do, the faster you’ll grow.” In mentoring students, Condon continues the impact Stout had on him by shaping careers, raising industry standards and inspiring the leaders of tomorrow.

At ��, philanthropy creates opportunities that transform students’ futures. Donor generosity removes barriers to education, strengthens individualized student support and advances academic innovation — ensuring innovative educators in our labs and classrooms, empowering students to lead, innovate and thrive long after graduation.

For professor Debbie Stanislawski, program director of the Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs spanning undergraduate through doctoral degrees, that impact is visible every day through the growth of her students and the opportunities made possible through philanthropic support. Those opportunities are especially visible through various outreach and student involvement programs across campus.

“Donor funding has strengthened my work in profound ways,” Stanislawski said. “Flexible philanthropic funds allow faculty and staff to continuously grow to address evolving student needs, update resources and ensure our applied learning is relevant to industry and community which transform our students’ experiences.”

Philanthropic support has made it possible for many CTE students to serve as academic ambassadors, a defining part of their Stout experience. In this leadership role, students collaborate closely with faculty, attend professional conferences and participate in mentorship and classroom immersion experiences. These opportunities help students build instructional confidence, expand their professional networks and connect their academic experiences with meaningful career pathways.

The ambassadors also work with local high schools to engage the next generation of students in what it means to be an educator and the importance of the work. They also showcase what it means to be a Stout Blue Devil and the uniqueness of the Stout polytechnic education. Their role helps to build a strong pipeline of future educators.

Such experiences often come full circle. Many of Stanislawski ��. former students go on to serve as advisors for organizations such as Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), mentoring the next generation of students through competitions, leadership development and career exploration. Others serve as technical college faculty and administrators, shaping programs and initiatives that influence students and staff alike.

Stanislawski ��. experience reflects a broader story across ��, where faculty-driven innovation, modern learning environments and a vibrant campus community weave together to support student success.

“I was inspired to become an instructor at �� because of the opportunity to support future marketing and business education teachers on their professional pathway,” Stanislawski said. “But what I love most — and what makes �� so special — is the comprehensive and fierce commitment my colleagues and the university have to all students.”

Beyond student success, philanthropy supports faculty-led innovation, cutting-edge research experiences, interdisciplinary curriculum development and experiential learning opportunities on campus and across the region.

Claudia Knowlton-Chike ’83 built a 40-year career defined by impact, helping lead complex global supply chains for some of the world ��. largest technology companies while mentoring the next generation of leaders along the way. Her work has shaped operations at organizations including IBM, Motorola, GE Healthcare, Facebook and Google.

In those roles, she oversaw complex international logistics networks, guided major operational transformations and helped ensure the technology millions of people rely on every day continues to run. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the work became especially intense as global demand for digital services surged. Long days were common, but the responsibility was clear: the systems her teams supported powered communication, business operations and everyday life around the world.

Originally from Minnesota, Claudia faced a difficult period in life and uncertainty about her future. Her mother encouraged her to pursue college and build a different path forward. That encouragement eventually led her to the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where she found a supportive and accommodating campus environment that allowed her to thrive. “The counseling services at Stout helped me get through one of the hardest times in my life,” she said. “Having that kind of support on campus made all the difference.”

When Claudia first arrived on campus, her passions were rooted in creativity. She intended to study fashion design and was already running her own design business. But a business course introduced her to packaging engineering and the lucrative career opportunities it offered. That pivotal decision steered her toward engineering, manufacturing and supply chain leadership, fields that would later become central to global technology operations.

After graduating, Claudia joined IBM as a packaging engineer. Her technical role quickly expanded as she gained a reputation for working well with people, solving difficult problems and delivering results from day one. During her 11 years as a packaging engineer, she earned international design recognition and helped develop packaging systems for IBM mainframes that remained in use decades later.

Claudia ��. career continued to evolve as mentors encouraged her to move beyond engineering and into broader operational leadership. That shift ultimately led her into supply chain management, where she would build expertise across planning, logistics and manufacturing. Over time, she held leadership roles at Motorola and GE Healthcare before entering the rapidly expanding technology sector at Facebook and later Google.

Throughout those roles, she led large global teams and navigated the complexities of international supply chains. She also experienced setbacks along the way, including several layoffs during major corporate restructurings. Each time, Claudia relied on resilience, strong professional relationships and a commitment to continuous learning to move forward.

Those experiences also reinforced what she values most about leadership: the opportunity to invest in other people ��. growth. Even with the scale of the operations she managed, the most meaningful part of Claudia ��. career has always been the people she helped develop.

“I love watching the people I hired or mentored go on to do amazing things,” she said. “Helping someone see their potential and grow into it is incredibly rewarding.”

That focus on mentorship and growth reflects the experience she had years earlier at ��. Claudia says, “�� showed me the value of support and flexibility. The faculty encouraged me to take on challenges, try new things and learn from every experience - lessons I carry with me in every leadership role.”

Several courses also left a lasting impression. Classes in biofeedback and speed reading, for example, helped her develop techniques to manage stress and process large amounts of information quickly, skills she relied on throughout decades of leadership roles.

Today, Claudia continues to create impact beyond her professional career. She has spent years advocating for Alzheimer ��. research after watching her father battle the disease. Her efforts include fundraising, community organizing and legislative advocacy aimed at expanding research and support for families affected by neurodegenerative diseases.

She and her husband have also chosen to give back to the university that helped launch her career by removing financial barriers to education and supporting future students at ��.

For Knowlton-Chike, that connection between opportunity and impact is deeply personal. The support she received as a student opened doors that eventually led to leadership roles influencing global technology infrastructure. By supporting students today, she hopes to create those same opportunities for others.

“When you invest in education and students, you’re investing in the future and the impact they’ll have on the world,” she said. “Stout was pivotal not only for my career, but for my life."

Survey finds rising pay, 99% employment rate for recent �� alums

Amazon. Cigna. CVS Health. General Motors. Citigroup. What do all these blue-chip companies have in common? In addition to being among the 25 largest American corporations on the latest Fortune 500 list, they’ve also hired recent University of Wisconsin-Stout graduates over the past year.

According to a new report, Blue Devils who graduated between fall 2024 and summer 2025 went to work for 54 firms on the Fortune 500, including 13 of the Top 25 companies on the prestigious list. Among the Fortune 500 employers who have hired �� graduates in the past year alone are 3M, Boeing, Boston Scientific, FedEx, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM, Nike, Oshkosh Corp., Rockwell Automation, Target, Tesla, Walt Disney and Xcel Energy.

Over the past five years, �� grads have been hired by more than 125 companies in the Fortune 500 — and counting. And wherever they are working for household names or small startups, fully 99% of recent graduates were either employed or furthering their education within six months of graduation, �� . annual First Destination Report found.

This success is built on strategic and intentional engagement with students throughout their time at �� to prepare them for future careers, said Career Services Director Bryan Barts. Initiatives include the fall and spring Career Conferences, among the largest in the Midwest; the Grow, Persist, Succeed (GPS) Program, which was honored by the Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents; and the new Blaze Forward In Your Job Search effort, a four-week career-readiness program tailored to address specific academic areas and key elements of the job and internship search.

“By providing a space to address barriers students may be facing, provide strategies to outreach to companies, and implement best practices in searching and connecting with companies, we have supported our mission to engage, educate, and empower students to see their potential,” Barts said.

Starting salaries on the rise

According to the First Destination Report survey, recipients of undergraduate degrees from �� in 2024-25 reported an annual starting salary of $59,000, a 4% increase from the prior year. The average starting salary for graduate degree recipients was $62,000.

The average starting salary for undergraduate degree holders from �� has been the highest among universities in western Wisconsin for the past six years for which figures are available, representing the ongoing return on investment in an education at Wisconsin ��. ��.

The new report found average starting salaries were higher than average in multiple undergraduate career clusters, including:

Science, engineering and math, $69,000;
Information technology and communication, $61,000;
Business and management, $63,000.

Numerous �� degree programs offered even higher starting salaries. For example, graduates with a B.S. applied math & computer science had an average starting salary of $80,000, while those with B.S. computer & electrical engineering and B.S. plastics engineering degrees both averaged $77,000. And the first cohort of graduates from the B.S. cybersecurity program started their careers making an average of $74,000.

Graduates of the B.S. management & leadership program had starting salaries that averaged $83,000, while B.S. construction management grads earned an average of $70,000. In education, the B.S. career, technical education & training program led the way with starting salaries averaging $74,000.

Alumni incomes among highest in state

Such salaries, of course, are just the beginning for �� graduates embarking on new careers. Blue Devil alumni can expect higher lifetime earnings than many of their peers. According to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Education, the median �� graduate makes $63,997 annually four years after graduation, the third-highest figure among the 13 Universities of Wisconsin schools.

�� also offers some of the highest-paying degree programs in the state, the federal data shows. Four years after graduation, Blue Devils employed in computer networking have a median income of $106,116, placing the program among the Top 10 highest-paid statewide offered by public and private universities. Other Top 25 programs include applied mathematics, whose graduates earn $100,475 four years into their careers, and construction management, whose alums have median salaries of $99,787.

Other data, collected on behalf of �� through the 2024 National Alumni Career Mobility (NACM) survey, paints a similar picture. Blue Devil graduates from the classes of 2019 and 2014 were asked about their careers. For undergraduate alumni five years after graduation, the median income was approximately $63,300 in 2024. That same year, the median income for undergraduate alumni who were 10 years into their careers was about $84,000.

Nationally, the median bachelor ��. degree holder between the ages of 22 and 27 makes $20,000 more annually than the median worker with only a high school diploma, according to research by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The gap is even wider for �� degree holders: Four years after graduation, their median salary is more than $26,000 per year higher than those who didn’t continue beyond high school, the U.S. Department of Education data shows.

�� . average starting salary has been the highest among universities in western Wisconsin for the past six years, and represents the ongoing return on investment in an education at Wisconsin ��. ��. �� . value has been recognized by the likes of Money Magazine, which for the second year in a row has included �� on its Best Colleges list focused on affordability and student outcomes. Numerous �� programs — from cybersecurity to game design to packaging to hotel, restaurant and tourism management – are among the top-ranked in the nation and even world.

��'s Career Conference Week, which is held twice a year, is one of the largest events of its kind in the Midwest.

Most find jobs before graduation

For the fourth year in a row, the First Destination Report found that 99% of recent graduates were either employed, furthering their education, or serving in the military or a service program within six months of commencement. That rate hasn’t dipped below 97% for at least 16 years, and it has never been below 90% over the more than half a century the survey has been conducted.

In the new report, the employment figure rose to 100% for graduate degree recipients as well as for military veterans in all degree programs.

Most graduates didn’t have to wait long for employment: In fact, nearly two-thirds of those who obtained �� undergraduate degrees accepted job offers a month or more before graduation, while another 15% were hired within a month of graduation, the survey found.

Graduates also believe �� readied them for post-college careers: The survey showed that 88% of 2024-25 graduates said they agreed or strongly agreed that their experience at �� prepared them for the next step in their career path.

Providing career-focused experiences is one of the key tenets to the polytechnic approach at ��, which is designated as Wisconsin ��. ��. All �� graduates receive applied learning experience before they receive their diplomas. Every year, the Cooperative Education & Internship Program oversees nearly 1,000 co-op and internship experiences. These internships and co-ops lead to professional positions for 35% of students.

Five �� Cabot Executives-in-Residence share ways to build a successful team

Leadership can come in many forms – a respected manager, an admired friend, a trusted teacher. And while there are many virtues that a successful leader may carry, what are the most important aspects of leadership?

We asked five former �� Cabot Executives-in-Residence leaders what is key to building a successful team. Their answers were unwavering: Leaders listen. They have empathy, vision and integrity. They hold their teams accountable.

‘Listen’

William Stoehr (’70) is a full-time artist and former president of National Geographic Maps. He served as Cabot executive in 2023. He and his wife, Mary Kay (’71), live in Boulder, Colorado.

"My most important aspect of leadership and management in one word is listen. Listen. Challenge. Act. Everything begins with listening – truly listening – to your stakeholders, team members, key players and the broader environment," Stoehr said.

"Then, challenge your assumptions. Strong leaders have the confidence to pause, reflect and question even their own ideas. When they listen and challenge, others feel heard, trust deepens and more effective teams emerge. It uncovers blind spots, invites diverse perspectives, leads to better decisions and empowers people to invest in a shared mission," he added.

‘Integrity’

Major General Marcia Anderson

Major General Marcia Anderson is the first African American woman to achieve the rank of Major General in the U.S. Army. She served as Cabot executive in 2014 and 2024.

"Having good character and integrity is more important than you may realize because people can spot someone who is inauthentic or who lacks integrity a mile away.

"At the end of the day, I want to be able to look myself in the mirror and be happy with the person that I see and be able to sleep at night. People know when you are faced with a difficult decision, and they will watch to see what you do. Have some personal courage. Be careful, be diplomatic. But remember, it ��. important to do the right thing," Anderson said.

‘Accountability’

Shelly Ibach

Shelly Ibach (’81) is the recently retired CEO of Sleep Number, headquartered in Minneapolis. She served as Cabot executive in 2015 and 2024.

"As a young leader, I developed a five-step process that I still use today. It ��. a simple process to ensure as a leader that you instill accountability in your team.

"The steps are: 1. Share a vision, 2. Set clear expectations, 3. Transfer responsibility, 4. Offer training and development to give team members the ability to be successful, and 5. Inspect their work to send the message that you care and that you want to help them realize their potential," Ibach said.

‘Empathy’

Bill Flesch (’81), of Madison, is chief development officer for Gordon Flesch Company Inc. and recipient of the 2024 Chancellor ��. Alumni Award. He served as Cabot executive in 2010.

"Empathy is a key component of leadership skills. If a leader doesn’t have empathy for their team, the likelihood of success is exponentially more challenging. If a leader expects loyalty and maximum effort, the leader needs strong listening skills and the humility to accept that there may be a more robust solution to the situation they are dealing with. Empathy opens the door to creative thinking without fear of voicing one ��. opinion. It also leads to higher levels of satisfaction for the team players, which in turn leads to attracting additional strong team members, creating longevity and stability for the entire team. The trust that an empathetic leader builds allows for projects to be completed faster with higher results," Flesch said.

'As a polytechnic, there ��. something to be said about teaching with real-life experiences.'

"Empathetic leaders also are quick to praise teams and team members with the proper recognition they have earned and deserve. Empathetic leaders understand they got to the position they have by the power and success of the team they represent," he added.

‘Vision’

Claudia Knowlton-Chike (’83) has 40 years of extensive high-tech experience, progressing from a foundational role as a packaging engineer to a global supply chain executive, holding leadership positions at industry giants like IBM, GE Healthcare, Motorola, and Facebook, and retiring from Google in 2022. She served as Cabot executive in 2006.

"With vision, a leader provides a compelling future, providing direction and purpose. Without a clear vision, people don't know where they're going. My favorite saying is Be a CEO: Clarity in Communications, Lead by Example, Exude Optimism," Knowlton-Chike said.
