Don't dread your upcoming exams when you follow these tips.

Let ��. be honest, nobody is super excited about finals. There is a mix of emotions, and it can be a tough time for some students, but hard work and balancing priorities pay off.

On the brighter side, the semester is almost over, and a very deserved break is almost here.

To help you succeed on your finals, here are a few helpful tips.

Don’t Procrastinate

Don’t wait until the last minute to start reviewing. Every minute you wait to study could lead to more stress. Give yourself at least two weeks before your exam. That way, you are not rushing to figure out what you do not know, and you allow time to get help if needed.

Find a Tutor, Ask for Help

Everyone struggles with at least one subject, so do not be afraid to seek help. Reach out to your professor and ask for assistance. Stout also provides different tutoring options for a multitude of subjects through the advisement center. Or find someone in your class who knows the subject better and can help you.

Take advantage of Stout's free tutoring and study support resources across campus.

Find a Study Buddy

Compare notes, quiz each other on the material, and teach each other. Two heads can be better than one when studying for an exam. You can even have a study group. If you are in an online class, you can create a virtual study group with other students in your class or ask your professor to connect you with a study buddy.

One of the many benefits of studying with a partner, as explained by ThoughtCo.:

“A study partner will understand some methods or problems that you don't. You will be able to explain some of the problems to your partner in return. It's a great trade-off!”

Find a Quiet Place to Study

Keep your focus. Studying in a loud or busy environment can be very distracting, so find your favorite study space where you know you can keep your head in the books. The library has reservable study rooms that can hold up to 12 people, so you and your study buddy or group will have plenty of room to work.

Other places on campus that students like to study are outside the Memorial Student Center (weather permitting), on the MSC's upper floor, and in Merle M. Price Commons.

Review Previous Tests & Quizzes

Some classes let you keep your previous tests or quizzes. These are great tools to review because, more than likely, there will be similar questions on the final exam. Previous tests and quizzes are a great place to start if you are unsure what to study.

Write It Out

Rewrite your notes. Find a blank whiteboard and write out your notes or pretend like you are teaching a class. It has been scientifically proven that writing things out helps you better remember things.

According to Science Daily, the University of Tokyo explains:

“A study of university students and recent graduates has revealed that writing on physical paper can lead to more brain activity when remembering the information an hour later. Researchers say that the unique, complex, spatial and tactile information associated with writing by hand on physical paper is likely what leads to improved memory.”

Try Flashcards

Write down key terms and ideas to study anywhere. You can take them out between classes or review them while you are eating lunch. Also, just writing the term and definition down to create the flashcard helps keep the information in your brain.

If you are more tech-savvy, there are many apps and websites out there to create digital flashcards. These sites allow you to have access to these flashcards on your phone and computer. The downfall of digital is that you need to have an internet connection to access them. Here is a list of a few options: Quizlet, Visme, and Brainscape.

Take Breaks

Whether you want to follow the 40-20 rule or the 45-15 rule, set a time limit for how long you study and then take a timed break. During your break, walk away from where you are studying to disconnect from what you just reviewed. This allows your brain to not get overworked, so you can fully focus while you are studying.

According to The Wellness Thesis:

“Micro-breaks, lunchtime breaks and longer breaks, have all been shown to have a positive relationship with wellbeing and productivity. By taking regular breaks you can boost your performance.”

Eat Healthy, Stay Hydrated, Get Quality Sleep

These three necessities are often sacrificed during finals season, but they can be the most important. Your body and brain need quality fuel and energy to function, and no amount of coffee, energy drinks, or sugary foods can replace actual substance.

According to The Sleep Foundation:

“Students who nap more tend to have higher GPAs. Napping right after you learn something can help improve your memory.”

Commencement Information

Commencement is one of the most meaningful milestones in a student ��. journey. It ��. a time to celebrate years of hard work, dedication, growth, and achievement alongside family, friends, classmates and faculty.

Commencement is on Saturday, May 16:

9:30 a.m.: College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management undergraduate ceremony
1:30 p.m.: College of Arts and Human Sciences undergraduate ceremony
5 p.m.: Graduate Studies ceremony

Doors will open 45 minutes prior to each ceremony. Seating is first-come, first-served. All guests for the undergraduate ceremony will need a ticket to enter Johnson Fieldhouse. Children 3 and under do not need a ticket. A remote viewing area is available on the second floor of the Memorial Student Center.

Expand your knowledge, get caught up or get ahead in your college career by enrolling in summer courses.

Whether your student wants to lighten their course load for the fall or just learn something new, summer classes are their ticket to a productive break. Students take summer classes for a multitude of reasons. Before your student checks out for the summer, have them consider what they might be missing.

Registration for Summer Session 2026 is open and continues through to the first week of classes. Classes start as soon as the end of May. Encourage your student to see what's available.

4 Reasons to Take Summer Classes

Get Ahead and Graduate Early.

Enrolling in summer courses will accelerate your student's degree path. Not only can it help them save money, but it will also allow them to finish their education early. Graduating early can be a significant advantage, especially when a company is in need of their expertise.

If your student can sustain a large workload, they can take up to 12 credits, which could reduce their graduation date by a whole semester. Don't worry if 12 credits seem overwhelming, taking 3 credits over the summer can still accelerate your student's graduation timeframe or at least lighten their semester load.

Reduce Fall or Spring Semester Workload.

Sometimes a semester is so crammed with challenging courses that your student knows they are going to struggle. Before resigning themselves to burnout, giving up their free time or stressing over their GPA, have them look at what summer courses are being offered to lessen their workload. These classes could cover a Stout Core credit or a major-specific credit.

Stout Core Classes

Your polytechnic education starts with 33 foundational credits in communication, critical thinking, civic engagement, analysis, and reasoning.

Expand Their Knowledge through a Specialty or Experimental Course.

Your student will always find courses offered over the summer that focus on a specific skill or subject. Specialty courses can allow them to dive deeper into a subject or cover emerging topics, such as AI. Make sure to have your student check what courses are going to be offered every summer term to ensure they do not miss out on a great opportunity to expand their knowledge.

Get a Second Chance on Missed Credits.

Sometimes, college classes don't go as planned and can throw off your student's graduation date. If they need to retake a course to stay on track, one option is to check if the course is offered over the summer. If not, encourage your student to talk to their advisor about taking a summer class that fulfills another required credit to make space for the retake in the fall or spring.

Steps your student can take to vote

At ��, we encourage our students to be active and engaged citizens, now and into the future. Voting is a foundational part of citizenship. Your student can exercise and build the habit of voting on Tuesday, April 7, and they can see what is on their ballot.

Anyone who meets applicable voting requirements is eligible to participate in local, state and federal elections. We offer resources and tools to help your student participate in the election process.

Students must be registered to vote to participate in the election process. Your student can:

In-Person Absentee Voting (Early Voting) at the City Clerk ��. Office
Register to vote at the polling place on election day.

Out-of-state students who have not voted in their home state can vote in Wisconsin, provided they have lived at their Wisconsin address 28 days prior to Election Day.

Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Your student can find their polling place and share their voice.

On Tuesday, Nov. 5, your student can vote in the general election. / ��

If your student plans on voting, they must provide three things: proof of residence, an enrollment letter and a valid ID:

A Proof of Residence document is necessary when registering to vote by mail, online, at the municipal clerk ��. office or at the polls. The easiest way to prove their residency is to bring a copy of their voter enrollment letter and their Stout BlueCard.
Wisconsin requires voters to provide a photo ID. Your students’ Stout BlueCard is acceptable.
Your student ��. voter enrollment letter must reflect their current address as an enrolled student. They can update their mailing address prior to printing their enrollment letter. They may also show a digital copy of their enrollment letter on their phone or device at the polls.

Being in a new place is a lot to take in, but when you make a friend or two, it makes it more fun to get out and explore together. Connect with a study abroad adviser to know if other Stout students will be joining you on the trip, and make a friend or two before you leave.

Make Memories That Last a Lifetime.

Last but not least… make memories you will hold forever. You will never forget your study abroad trip. The friendships you make, the different landscapes you get to explore, the food you get to eat and the classes you get to take all will leave a mark on your life. You will be coming home having gained personal growth, knowledge and independence that you can only gain from world travel.

What to do when connecting with potential employers

At Career Services, our goal is to help your student navigate their career and professional development by connecting them with potential employers for internship and career opportunities. And as the spring Career Conference approaches, it ��. time for your student to prepare!

Two things that will be important for your student to work on ahead of time are their resume and networking skills. Networking is simple. You learn about someone and what they do, and then they learn about you and what you do in return. This happens most commonly with people your student already knows, like their peers and professors.

As your student builds their professional connections, here are some simple networking and resume tips:

Networking Tips

Do…

Ask people you know to introduce you to others who may be able to provide you insight into internships or jobs of interest to you. Research the companies or individuals in advance if you can and prepare questions.
Be an active, engaged listener. Listen carefully to the advice and information others share and take notes as appropriate.
Networking is a two-way street. Be prepared to return the favor when someone in your network group asks for assistance.
Share copies of your resume. You want visibility within your field, so you want people to understand what you bring to the table.
Prepare and practice your elevator pitch. What ��. your story? Include three things people must know about you to be memorable. Consider who you are talking to and be relatable. When creating your elevator pitch consider what, who, where, how and results.
Send a thank you note or email to new people you meet. It can make a lasting impression.
Stay in touch with your network periodically to keep a strong connection.

Don’t…

Use slang, poor grammar, be rude or unprofessional with communicating with others.
Forget about the alumni within your major. Reach out via LinkedIn to create connections and leverage their experiences within their industry.
Tell them your life story; you are dealing with busy people, so get right to the point.
Pass up opportunities to network.
Be shy or afraid to ask for what you need.

Writing a Resume

Do…

Customize your resume for the job you are applying for. The person reviewing your resume wants to see a genuine interest in the position. Take time to share how your skills meet their requirements.
Use keywords and industry lingo and include them in your resume when highlighting your experiences and skills. Be relevant.
Write skill statements using the format ACTION VERB + SKILL + TASK/RESULT. Skill statements are essential and quantifying them takes your resume to the next level.
Set up an appointment with a Career Services counselor to review your resume.

Don’t…

Be long-winded. Including the name of your cat or how you won the ugly holiday sweater contest at your brother ��. uncle ��. work party won’t get you the interview.
Neglect spelling, grammar and punctuation errors.
Bedazzle your resume. You want your resume to stand out based on your experiences and skills

Helping your student find their way around if they don't have a car

�� offers a number of sustainable transportation programs to help your student get around campus and Menomonie, for commuting to work off-campus, or for a ride home for the weekend.

Rideshare App

�� Rideshare is a free app that can help your student quickly and securely find carpool partners for daily commutes, trips home for the weekend or for school breaks.

As the app uses destination and schedules to match drivers with riders, the more people who use the app, the more available rideshares appear in your student ��. search.

Local Bus Routes

Dunn County Transit offers students free access with their BlueCard student ID to the StoutRoute Campus Bus, which makes three stops on its route, with an optional stop at Student Health. The Community Bus offers four stops on campus and covers the Menomonie community with stops including two grocery stores, the hospital and Wal-Mart.

The Live Bus Tracker shows where the StoutRoute and Community Route buses are in real-time.

If your student prefers to bike, they can check out our StoutBikes Bike Share program.

Regional Bus Routes

Your student also has a number of regional bus options, and they can book their ticket online:

Badger Bus offers weekend service to Eau Claire, Madison, and Milwaukee. Your student can catch a ride from Walmart in North Menomonie.
Groome Transportation offers service to the MSP airport multiple times each day. Your student can meet their shuttle at the AmericInn Hotel in North Menomonie.
