Alex Stuckert earned his bachelor ��. in construction management and minor in construction safety and risk control from ��, while competing on the Blue Devil hockey team.

The team is what originally brought him to Stout – he played defense for five years, played in all 29 games his fourth and fifth season, and served as captain his fifth year in 2023-24, when the Blue Devils made it to the WIAC semifinals.

Stuckert stayed on at �� to earn his online master ��. degree in operations and supply management with a concentration in project management while working as a full-time electrical distribution designer for Xcel Energy.

Online graduate school was the only viable option he saw that would enable him to execute his plan of working a full-time job, playing Division III hockey and attending school full-time.

Stuckert received his master ��. on Dec. 14, along with 510 graduates.

“�� . online OSM program was extremely flexible, allowing me to use my professional experience in the utility construction industry in class projects and exercises, allowing me to fulfill my job responsibilities, maintain strong customer satisfaction, and keep my mind and body in shape to give my hockey team the best chance of success,” he said.

“Having that flexibility gave me the ability to be a leader in my professional career and in the locker room.”

Stuckert is looking to advance his career at Xcel and strengthen relationships as he continues to grow into new positions within the company, as well as roles outside of work to make a bigger impact in his community.

How has your �� experience changed you?

�� has changed my life by allowing me to gain both confidence and professional experience working with industry professionals.

I was able to earn a prestigious degree while competing with some of the best college hockey players at the Division III level, including serving as captain of the team in my final year.

How well has �� prepared you to work in your field?

During my undergrad, I was able to secure an internship after my sophomore year with Ironmark Building Company out of Minneapolis. I had a great experience with them as I learned what the inner workings of a highly successful construction company looks like and what it takes to be successful.

Being able to transfer knowledge directly from the classroom to a construction job site helped give me a true understanding and real appreciation of what I was learning at ��.

What stands out about your �� experience?

My time at �� as a hockey player stands out to me and has been a catalyst in my professional, athletic and educational career. My experience on the team complemented all of the leadership lessons, experiences and discipline I gained in my educational career.

I was named as a 2024 Academic All-District® Men's and Women's At-Large teams, selected by College Sports Communicators, which recognizes the nation's top student athletes for their combined performances in competition and in the classroom. I was also named a Krampade/AHCA All-American Scholar by the American Hockey Coaches Association.

Having an internship in the field supporting all the things I learned in the classroom, and then working for Xcel Energy took those combined experiences and magnified the impact I could have whether at work, in the classroom or on the ice. And now I can take all of those experiences and apply them to serving my community as well.

I was also invited to travel with Chancellor Katherine Frank and Athletics Director Duey Naatz to advocate for the student athlete experience at the Wisconsin legislature in Madison and accompanied the Athletics Director in touring the University of Minnesota Rec Well Center to see what other institutions are doing to support their student athletes.

These invitations gave me opportunities to serve as a student leader outside of work, the classroom or the ice, and also built upon my educational experience at ��.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree?

The most difficult challenge that I had, which I am sure is consistent with all student athletes, is time management. Last year, in particular, I worked full-time at Xcel Energy while going to school full time and while serving as captain and member of the hockey team.

I've always been disciplined, and while this schedule pushed me to the max, it also gave me an opportunity to see that if I am committed to something and put in the discipline to meet all of my goals, I am capable of much more than I could ever have imagined.

Managing my day-to-day schedule was also difficult to maintain a high grade-point-average, while playing collegiate hockey and keeping my mind and body in good health. Dealing with constant injury and working to rehab those injuries was also quite the hardship when I had so many other tasks that needed to be accomplished.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

The thing that I am the most proud of is what I was able to accomplish in five years. I was blessed with so many supporting individuals who backed my decision to return for my fifth year of competition. My teammates, coworkers, family and friends helped push me and supported me to accomplish my goals.

I learned so much about myself and how much I was able to manage at one time; so much more than what I thought prior to beginning my graduate degree.

When Brianna Capra began her master ��. degree, she had been out of academia for more than 20 years, having earned her B.F.A. in sculpture from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design in 1999.

Her passion for making books and love of illustrating for children led her to ��'s master ��. in fine arts in design program, where she earned her graduate degree on May 4, along with 1,037 graduates.

Capra will continue making books and has many ideas she ��. been waiting to bring to life. She plans to start a center for book arts in the Chippewa Valley, modeled after the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, and hopes to continue teaching drawing.

“It is wonderful to share what I know with the next generation of artists, plus I learn just as much from them as they learn from me,” Capra said.

How well has �� prepared you to work in your field and why?

I found the polytechnic emphasis at Stout to be equal parts challenging and inspiring. I learned so many skills that I had not expected to, digging into research, learning to use digital platforms and design tools, and writing scholarly content as well as creating a cohesive portfolio of artwork.

As an illustrator, learning to use digital media is extremely valuable. Though I continue to work primarily in traditional media, knowing how to use digital tools can help me stay current in my very competitive field.

Stout has also given me some teaching opportunities. These experiences were incredibly valuable as I intend to pursue future teaching positions.

What stands out about your �� experience?

The instructors I was fortunate to work with at Stout are excellent. Professors in the MFAiD program, as well as those whose classes I took as electives, are helpful, knowledgeable and professional.

The Digital Process Lab, Printmaking Lab and Student Gallery 201 are also outstanding resources for students in the School of Art and Design. They provided me with an opportunity to create and display a prolific amount of artwork.

I am grateful to the faculty and staff in the School of Art and Design. They are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive. They have treated me with dignity and patience, even though I ask a million questions and still don’t really know how to get on a Teams meeting.

How did your involvement on campus impact your experience?

I was the recipient of a Foundation Scholarship in 2022, a Certificate of Sustainable Design and a Student Research Grant in 2024. The research grant was a great benefit, as it helped pay for materials and printing costs associated with my creative thesis project, a 136-page graphic guide to plastic pollution, recycling and living plastic-free.

I was also chosen as the Outstanding Graduate Student Researcher for 2024. This is quite an honor and a surprise considering how far behind I thought I was when I started the program after 20 years out of school.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

I had been out of academia for more than 20 years. The MFAiD program is quite rigorous, and initially it felt daunting to read scholarly articles and relearn how to write in a scholarly way.

Also, the world has changed dramatically since the 1990s. Doing everything on digital platforms presented me with a steep learning curve. There were many times I thought I was too out of touch to figure out how to work programs like Canvas and Teams, not to mention Photoshop and InDesign. My professors were understanding and helpful, and though I am not proficient with digital platforms, I have a degree of confidence I did not have before.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I am quite pleased with the quality of work I was able to create while in the MFAiD program. Some of my pieces received awards in juried gallery shows. I got honorable mention for a print titled “Sweetgrass Woman” shown at Wisconsin Arts West in 2022, and best of show for a drawing titled “A Gift Freely Given” at the Otherworldly Arts Safe Word show in February of 2024. I have also self-published and sold several of the comic books I made in classes at Stout.

Inspiring graduate Cole Beckstead / �� Athletics

Being a first-generation student, Cole Beckstead remembers dreaming of earning a university degree. He ��. also always dreamed of playing professional ice hockey. He ��. recently reached both of his goals.

Beckstead transferred to �� in the fall of 2021 for his B.S. in business administration and played forward for the Blue Devil men ��. hockey team.

During his junior year, he signed a contract to play professional hockey in Europe with the Drakkars du Caen, in Normandy, France.

Beckstead continued his studies online and earned his degree from �� on Dec. 16, along with 526 graduates.

While he continues to play for the Drakkars, he plans to explore other professional opportunities during the off-season.

How has your �� education changed you?

My Stout experience has changed me by teaching me practical knowledge that can be transferred to a variety of fields of knowledge. The polytechnic approach has taught me how to apply knowledge acquired in the classroom to problems in the contemporary world.

I have learned a whole new method of thinking since arriving at Stout.

I believe it has taught me to focus on the problem at hand and utilize the skills and knowledge I obtained to allow me to find solutions for real-time problems.

The relationships that students can build with professors stands out. The smaller class sizes allow for students to have one-on-one instruction. The professors always go above and beyond to help.

Being on the ice hockey team allowed me to step into a comfortable family environment immediately once arriving on campus.

I also joined numerous clubs, such as the Boxing Club and the Pickleball Club. This allowed me to meet new people outside of my realm. It was enjoyable to have the opportunity to escape hockey and surround myself with people of different backgrounds.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

The main challenge I faced while earning my degree was juggling the hectic schedule of being a student athlete. It was difficult at times to maintain a social life, athletic performance and academic performance.

When I left campus to play hockey in France, I still needed to complete three courses to successfully graduate. It presented many difficulties, such as a seven-hour time change and the daily life of a professional athlete.

I was fortunate enough to be able to complete my degree online via customized instruction.

While my teammates enjoyed the good time on the bus after a win, I did schoolwork while looking out the window at the French Alps. I have stayed focused on what I need to do and put forth my best effort to obtain my degree.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I am proud of the consistency I brought forth every day. Being the first member in my family to graduate university is something I am extremely proud of.

Jacob Martin earned his M.S. in ICT from �� on Dec. 16 / Jacob Martin

Jacob Martin completed his master ��. online at �� while serving in the Army Reserve, 753rd Quartermaster Company unit out of Green Bay.

He earned his M.S. in information and communication technologies from �� on Dec. 16, along with 526 graduates.

Martin works in information systems at Pierce Manufacturing and may choose to stay on after graduation or take a different path in his military career.

“Stout has allowed me to put my military career front and center, accommodating when needed,” he said.

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

�� has prepared me well. I can honestly say that the Stout team has been very constructive, accommodating and all-in-all, great.

The courses have trained me for the roles I will be in, and the coursework has been a steppingstone for me in my career.

In one of my courses, I worked on server maintenance and upgrades. A couple of months later, my employer needed assistance with a 2016 Windows server. Having the knowledge from the course assisted me in general navigation that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

At this stage in my life, there are a lot more commitments that I need to invest myself fully into. This program pressured me into learning how to organize my time and thoughts so that everything that needs to be completed, is completed.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

I believe most can relate to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. My life was a routine of items that needed to be completed. COVID tossed a wrench into this clockwork, and my standard daily tasks changed drastically.

The other challenge was the military. While I was not deployed, there were training dates I was asked to take on short notice. Some of these trainings were over a month-long, conflicting with my schedules.

Communication is the key to solving most of life ��. problems.

Getting to know your friends, co-workers, classmates and anyone else in your life is through honest communication. Everyone has troubles and surprises that come up, and they are relatable among us. Explaining these challenges to others who depend on you as soon as you know is the key to gaining support and completing your goals.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I’m proud of being part of a small group that has earned their graduate degree. There is a great sense of accomplishment that I feel after completing a long and difficult journey. With that, there is pride going into the next part of my life.

I’m appreciative of those who pushed me to get here and am looking forward to continuing my journey and paying it back.

Anne Redmond has been going to school on and off since 2003. As a 2017 B.S. in management �� alum, she wanted to return to school for her master ��., but couldn't find her degree of choice anywhere locally.

However, �� had many programs that piqued her interest that other UW locations didn't have, and she found she could complete her master ��. degree online.

With financial support from her employer's school reimbursement program, Redmond earned her M.S. in construction management from �� on Dec. 16, along with 526 graduates.

In her mid-50s, Redmond has been employed in her field for some time. For the past five years, she has been a project manager for A-C Equipment Services in Milwaukee, and before that, spent 24 years designing mining equipment.

“Stout has greatly enhanced what I already know and sharpened my skills. Stout also helped broaden my areas of knowledge within my field,” she said.

What stands out about your �� experience?

The construction management program has so many excellent professors. I really enjoyed learning from them, and many of them really pushed me to improve my skills.

Also, the ability to be a distance learner made my Stout experience the best. As a result of remote learning, I learned to set goals, be diligent and be a better problem solver.

The ability to learn, whether out on the road traveling for work or huddled at home in the midst of a snowstorm, has been invaluable to me.

The flexibility of the distance program at Stout has been what made my degree possible with my schedule.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

I had several hard life challenges that I went through. In my first semester, I went through breast cancer treatments. Then about a year later, my husband died in an accident. Three months after he died, my mother died of a heart attack. Later, I was hospitalized with COVID and struggled with recovery while still going to school. Most recently, I have been an intermittent caregiver for one of my sisters who has brain cancer.

It's been a turbulent past several years. These tribulations made it difficult to focus on my schoolwork at times, but I stuck it out and pushed through. Looking back, I don't know how I did it. Being a distance learner helped, I think.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I am most proud that I stuck it out through my life's difficulties and finished my master's. There were so many times I wanted to quit. Life got to be so hard sometimes.

I was so close to just dropping it all and moving on. I'm glad I didn't. This is a proud moment for me.

I may consider further education since I believe we should never stop learning.

Recognition by U.S. News & World Report reflects ‘dedication of the faculty and staff’

A graduate program at University of Wisconsin-Stout has been named one of the best in the nation by a leading publication.

The Master of Science in rehabilitation counseling is tied for 10th in the U.S. News & World Report ��. new rankings of graduate programs the U.S. The program has been consistently among the national leaders in recent magazine rankings.

“This ranking reflects the dedication of the faculty and staff who teach and serve in the program,” said Professor Daniel Kelsey, chair of the counseling, rehabilitation and human services department at ��. “Furthermore, it underscores the high-quality graduates of our program and the work they do across the country.”

The ranking is part of the magazine ��. Best Health Schools 2023-24 report.

M.S. rehabilitation counseling, offered online, is geared toward professionals in the field who want to advance their education and career, but it also is for those with limited experience who are interested in the field. Students enhance their skills with two required practicum experiences.

According to the university ��. most recent First Destination report, 100% of M.S. rehabilitation counseling graduates were employed within six months.

The program, which has been offered at �� for more than 50 years, prepares students to work with people who have all types of disabilities including physical, cognitive, intellectual, psychological and/or sensory. Counselors help clients and consumers make decisions, reach their potential and optimize personal, social and economic independence.

Counseling, Rehabilitation & Human Services Department

We prepare students to perform a vital role as counselors who have specialized knowledge and skills for both mental health and rehabilitation service delivery.

Graduates are prepared to take the national Certified Rehabilitation Counselor examination and are eligible to apply for the Licensed Professional Counselor credential in Wisconsin. They may be eligible for similar credentials in other states.

�� . rehabilitation and counseling department also offers undergraduate degrees in rehabilitation services and criminal justice and rehabilitation, a master ��. in clinical mental health counseling and a minor in disability services. Daniel Kelsey, Ph.D., CRC, is a professor in the Counseling, Rehabilitation, and Human Services Department at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. He serves as the Department Chair and teaches graduate and undergraduate rehabilitation courses. His research interests are focused in the areas of social justice for individuals with disabilities, sociopolitical construction of disability, and power and ethics in the counseling relationship. Jackson Yang ��. education at �� has given him confidence in himself and his artwork, but his journey was deeper than his degrees.

While earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design and interactive media, he struggled with the concepts and there were times when he wanted to break down and drop out.

“My family, friends and girlfriend, Amy, helped me through some rough times,” said Yang, of Wausau. “They had my back. And Amy is constantly here for me. Her love and compassion keep me going. She reminds me, ‘Don’t compare yourself to other people. Just be better than yourself.’”

Yang earned his undergraduate degree from �� in 2019, but he felt he hadn’t reached his full potential. He will graduate with his Master of Fine Arts in design from �� on Saturday, May 6.

“I’m proud of how my art and design improved and seeing where I am now,” he said.

“For a long time, I was selling myself short. My family and Amy helped me to keep going. You need that support system. I want to make them proud and keep pushing myself. I want to help other students know that tomorrow you’ll be better than you are today.”

Yang ��. education also led him on a spiritual journey of rediscovering his Hmong culture through the arts.

Finding a gateway back into his culture

Yang struggled to embrace his culture for much of his life, until the second year of his undergrad.

“I grew up rejecting that part of my identity, and Stout helped me find love for my community again and to dive into and re-embrace my culture,” he said.

During his undergrad, Yang joined Hmong Stout Student Organization, and his cousin Kalvin, a student team member in the Multicultural Student Services office, helped him learn about traditional Hmong arts.

“It was the art and wanting to make my mom proud that was my gateway back into the Hmong culture. I want to pay respect to my culture,” Yang said.

And for students who want to re-embrace their culture, he thinks, “You have to find something that you can connect with. It could be something simple or big. It all comes down to who you are as a person.”

Transforming tradition into modern-day storytelling

As a graphic designer and illustrator, Yang ��. dream is to work with the Hmong community, teaching the next generation about the traditional arts through design, children ��. book illustrations or comics.

Kalvin, who had pointed Yang in the creative direction for his undergrad senior show, was also instrumental in helping Yang establish the theme for his master ��. thesis: “A Thread Through History: How Interlinking Contemporary Art with Paj Ntaub Can Connect Generations.”

His graduate research is dedicated to Hmong culture, bringing elements of traditional story cloths and flower cloths – Paj Ntaub – and their embroidered motifs and aesthetics into contemporary digital storytelling.

“Jackson explored these themes through the lens of a children's book for kids who find themselves navigating between two cultural identities,” said Erik Evensen, MFA in design program director and Yang ��. thesis adviser. “Working with Jackson has been nothing short of delightful. He is incredibly thoughtful and motivated, and his work is well-crafted and quite beautiful.”

While sharing the history of Paj Ntaub, Yang also illustrates the story of “To Broken Souls,” using the story cloth style, telling the story of Ben, a young Hmong man, and a leaf frond spirit and the connections they make.

Yang ��. mother played a role in his educational journey as well. “A large portion of why I wanted to reconnect with my culture was for my mother. I wanted to make her proud and show her just how much she means to me, which was one of the reasons why I pursued the MFA and focused on the Hmong arts.

“She loved making flower cloths, so her eyes would always light up when I showed any kind of interest in it, especially for my education,” Yang said.

Yang learned the story cloths and Paj Ntaub were art forms pioneered by women. He studied their selection of colors used in the textiles, the spacing of images and texture. “The embroidery creates a natural texture, even in the placement of the direction of the stitches,” he said. “I admire the intricate designs of the folding and sewing techniques they use. It ��. very difficult.”

Yang always thought story cloths were an older art form, but in learning more about them, he found that they are relatively new in terms of Hmong history, dating back only to the 1970s. As a way to remember their lives in Laos and share their memories with future generations, women began to sew their family stories while refugees after the Vietnam War.

Paj Ntaub are a more ancient art form, with several legends of their own. One legend, Yang said, tells of the books of knowledge said to contain the entire Hmong written language. Under the oppression of Chinese rule, it was made illegal to speak or write in the Hmong language and the books were destroyed. Hmong women used their skills in needlework to sew their language into their clothing, secretly preserving it, developing Paj Ntaub.

“Whether the legend is true or not is debated – but it speaks to the importance of the art form,” Yang said. “Paj Ntaub became a way for women to communicate and preserve their language and culture.”

Yang is thankful for the support he received during his time at ��, naming mentors Tanya Gunkel, Educational Materials Center librarian; Aubrey Huff, former librarian; as well as his thesis committee members – Evensen; Associate Professor Mitchell Ogden, English, philosophy and communication; and Assistant Professor Mary Climes, of comics.

Yang ��. mother died a little over a year ago from COVID.

“I had originally wanted to include my mother in some capacity for my thesis. She unfortunately will never be able to see what I had planned for the future after graduation,” he said. “My brother, sister-in-law and sister have supported me in my mother's place.”

New Library Art Lab

Yang ��. thesis show was recently displayed in the new Library Art Lab, on the first floor of the University Library.

The exhibit space was created in collaboration with faculty and staff of the library and the School of Art and Design, led by Sue Lindahl, assistant director of Cataloging and Access Services; Professor Charlie Lume; and Renee Carrell, Furlong Gallery assistant director.

“There was a need on campus for more art exhibit space for students, and since the library has such a solid history of supporting art and design, the partnership was a logical fit,” Gunkel said. “Art is a universal language. The library is a place that breaks down barriers and is accessible no matter someone ��. background.”

Yang is a graduate assistant at the library and also serves on the Library Public Relations Committee, chaired by Gunkel. He creates book displays and posters, some of which have been accepted into the University Archives, an exciting accomplishment for any student, Gunkel said.

“Tanya and Aubrey played a huge role in allowing me to push the boundaries of what I was able to design for my graduate assistant position,” Yang said.

A large portion of Yang ��. portfolio that he shows to potential employers comes directly from projects he created in his role as a library graduate assistant.

“Jackson has been an important part of our team and has built a sense of belonging through his artwork,” she added. “He ��. helping other students see themselves in the displays and posters he creates. This can make a difference in a person ��. day. He probably never stops to think about it, but he ��. helping build student retention.

“He ��. original, innovative, has a strong work ethic, is talented and creative. I don’t know who would be better in a new design role than Jackson,” Gunkel said.

Along with design and graphic design, the School of Art and Design has five other BFA programs, including animation and digital media and studio art. It offers two Bachelor of Science degrees in arts administration and entrepreneurship and video production.

For years, Kristen Ziegler dreamed of obtaining her master ��. in career and technical education, with a goal of teaching in a post-secondary setting. But as an educator, wife and mom, she knew she needed a program that was fully online and affordable.

“Now, I’m living the dream as a program director and educator of CTE at Blackhawk Technical College,” said Ziegler, who graduated from �� with her master ��. in CTE on Dec. 17.

Ziegler graduated with her associates degree in dental hygiene at the age of 21 and never thought she’d return to the classroom. She worked in the industry for 17 years.

“I knew I had a greater purpose and began my journey of obtaining my bachelor's degree and now, my master's degree. Nearing 40, with a total of 11 years as a college student, my educational journey has never ended and will continue to grow as I lead and teach the next generation of dental professionals,” Ziegler said.

“During my time at ��, I have had to wear many hats and find the balance to be successful. One of the most important hats we will wear is our graduation hat, which represents the sacrifice, dedication and commitment needed to have the honor of wearing it. A great education is possible, and our journey is never done,” she added.

How has your time at Stout added to your professional experience?

The professors in �� . School of Education were amazing and wanted their students to succeed.

Many of the courses in my program were required by the college I teach at, and I was able to obtain dual credit from the courses I took at Stout to count toward my professional development.

What was the online program like for you?

The MSCTE program was a well-developed online program already in place pre-pandemic.

I found comfort in my education during these trying times and found it was a secure and comfortable outlet.

I stayed organized, motivated and accountable for my own educational experience. When the world was uncertain during the pandemic, my education was not. In fact, being an online student during these trying times provided me with stability when everything around us was unpredictable.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

What I am most proud of is that I proved to myself that obtaining my master ��. degree was possible while juggling the needs of my family and career. I completed graduate school with a 4.0 grade point average over five years, taking one class per semester. While it took me longer, the pace allowed me to succeed and avoid student loan debt. This was truly a dream in the making. As I close out my 11th year as a college student and third degree, I know my educational journey isn’t over. Rather, it is just blossoming.
