During two ceremonies in Johnson Fieldhouse, the alumni speakers encouraged graduates to embrace the unknown and be proud of their Stout journeys as they positively impact their communities and the world:</span></p><ul><li><span>Polaris Inc. It will guide your own unique path and be a reminder of what is most important to you.”</span></li><li><span>“Small hinges swing big doors: Never underestimate the value of the impact you can make in this world. The work you do and your actions and contributions matter.”</span></li><li><span>“Invest in your community: Paying it forward and taking a proactive, caring interest by contributing to the wellness of your community is worth the effort, and you will get back more than you give. An investment in your community is an investment in yourself.”</span></li></ul><p><span>“It is now the obligation you own as a graduate of this great institution, to apply your knowledge, skills and craft to tackle life . challenges in ways that improve our world for us, our neighbors and for generations to come,” Leighton said.</span></p><h3><span>#StoutProud is a way of life</span></h3><p><span>When <strong>Donnelly</strong> first came to 30 years ago as an undergraduate and member of the women . basketball team, she admitted she was far more interested in being an athlete-student than a student-athlete. All because a Stout professor saw something in me that I hadn’t yet seen in myself,” said Donnelly, whose first teaching job was in special education.</span></p><p><span>Donnelly soon returned to for her master . degree. “The relationships I had built and the support I experienced made it clear – there was no place else I’d rather be,” she said.</span></p><p><span>She has served in several leadership roles within education, including director of pupil services, high school principal and superintendent. And last spring, she jumped at the opportunity to return to yet again, this time as director of the School of Education.</span></p><p><span>“I didn’t hesitate. Coming back to the place that shaped my entire adult life was truly a dream come true,” said Donnelly, who on her first day back on campus “felt the true meaning of being Stout Proud. It . not just a slogan – it . a way of life.”</span></p><p><span>This core feeling was at the heart of her message to students: “Wherever you go, Stout Proud will forever be part of your journey.”</span></p><h3><span>‘We lift each other up.’</span></h3><p><span><strong>Moore</strong> reminded her fellow graduates that “isn’t just a place where we earned a degree. It . where we learned what it means to support and be supported. To show up for one another. Being the loudest voice in any room, if it meant being a light for students who once felt like I did. Becoming a beacon for the lost. A wrecking ball to barriers that stood in their way,” said Moore, who was the director of Legislative Affairs with </span><a href="https://connect.uwstout.edu/feeds?type=club&amp;type_id=18677&amp;tab=about" target="_blank"><span>Stout Student Association</span></a><span>.</span></p><p><span>“While Stout has been a cornerstone for teaching us what it means to take part in a community bigger than ourselves, I implore you to explore what this truly means to you,” she added.</span></p><p><span>“Our community at Stout is made up of people from many corners of the world, every background imaginable and every walk of life. And yet, we found connection, we learned from one another, challenged each other and grew together.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>“That . the kind of community that doesn’t fade after graduation. That . the kind of community that carries us forward into our careers, into our neighborhoods, into the next chapters of our lives. It reminds us that no matter how big the world feels, we are never truly alone. We carry each other with us. Her family came to watch the fireworks, but every reserved viewing area was full. It had been a long, hot day, and sometimes the magic at Disney can start to feel routine – but not that night,” Rucker said.</span></p><p><span>She asked another cast member to cover her station, while she escorted the little girl and her family to one of the best spots she knew – a quiet bridge near Cinderella . carriage, tucked away from the commotion.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>“I knelt down to her level, let her choose buttons and stickers and made sure her family had everything they needed. Then she looked up at me and asked, ‘Can I give you a hug?’ She wrapped her arms around me and whispered, ‘This is even better than I imagined,’” Rucker remembered.</span></p><p><span>From that moment, Rucker will forever carry a lesson: “Our purpose is often found in simple acts of kindness. I discovered passions I didn’t know I had. I uncovered strengths I didn’t realize were mine. This university didn’t just change my path; it changed who I believed I could become. And today, standing here, I am, and always will be, StoutProud,” she said.</span></p><p><span>Eggum returned to to manage Stoutfitters, the university bookstore.&nbsp;Her career then pivoted, and she went on to earn her master . degree. She is now the orientation coordinator and project manager for the Dean of Students Office, managing projects that strengthen communication, improve operational processes and enhance student experiences.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>“My hope is simple: to help others feel the same belonging and encouragement and possibility that I found here,” Eggum said, encouraging graduates to “take every opportunity, even the ones that feel small, unexpected or uncertain, because you never know where it will lead you.</span></p><p><span>“As we graduate, we have the opportunity to extend that same support to others. To lead with compassion. To build workplaces and communities where people feel valued. To create change in ways both big and small. helping them build connections, strengthen transformational relationships – both professional and personal – and shape them and their careers:</span></p><ul><li><a home long before they stepped onto campus as students. Those lessons shaped the leader I became – and the colleague, husband, father and friend I strive to be every day.</span></p><p><span>“To the Class of 2025: You are entering a world filled with complexity and challenge – but also extraordinary opportunity. You’ve already built the technical skills to succeed. What will carry you even further are the relationships you’ve made – and the ones you’ll build as you move forward.</span></p><p><span>“Some of the most meaningful connections of your life may have already started right here at Stout. Nurture them. Expand them. Lean on them. Data tells us that virtually all of you already have a job or will very soon,” Will said. “And you’ll find that your new degree will open more doors after you enter the workforce, just like my degree did for me. When I look at you, I actually don’t see a finish line as much as I see a starting point that represents the leaders of tomorrow.</span></p><p><span>“What I’ve realized over the years is that achieving what you’re about to achieve also comes with some responsibilities.&nbsp;You are about to be an alum.&nbsp;So, this university . reputation is now about what you do in the coming years. How you choose to live your life, and how you choose to contribute. You have a responsibility to give to your employer and your community. I was part of it before I even knew it. This place isn’t just where I grew up – it helped shape who I am.”</span></p><p><span>In college, Schofield studied biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology and was planning a future in medicine or research. “I learned that spending eight hours a day talking to mice and rat heart cells wasn’t exactly my calling,” she said. “Because what I love – what I need – is people. Conversation. Connection.”</span></p><p><span>After&nbsp;graduating, she earned&nbsp;her science teaching license and built a classroom based on growth, laughter and learning. Her education came full circle when she earned her master . from . “The coursework transformed me. Courses in program evaluation and instructional design opened doors in my thinking – doors I didn’t even know were there,” she said.</span></p><p><span>Now, as an elementary&nbsp;school&nbsp;principal, she “looks back and the destination may&nbsp;be very different from the one I envisioned when I was first asked&nbsp;what I want to be when I grow up. But truthfully, it is exactly&nbsp;where&nbsp;I&nbsp;am&nbsp;meant&nbsp;to&nbsp;be.</span></p><p><span>“Some&nbsp;of&nbsp;you&nbsp;are&nbsp;living&nbsp;the&nbsp;exact&nbsp;plan&nbsp;you&nbsp;set&nbsp;out&nbsp;with. And some of you? You’ve already learned that plans can change – and that . okay. In fact, it can be more than okay, it can be beautiful. Because wherever life leads you next, you now carry something powerful: the knowledge, the tools and&nbsp;the&nbsp;confidence&nbsp;to&nbsp;thrive. You are ready. You are capable,” Schofield said.</span></p><h3><span>Finding strength in community</span></h3><p><span>Although <strong>Kaunda&nbsp;</strong>graduated with a double major, he had no clear path when he started his educational journey at . “I just had a desire to make an impact and a willingness to learn as I went. And guess what? Because I’ve learned that life isn’t about having a perfectly mapped-out plan. It . about the direction you’re moving in. It . about waking up each day with a commitment to grow – just 1% better than the day before. That . all. One small step forward, every day.</span></p><p><span>“The next step might be exciting, intimidating, or completely unexpected, but the important thing is to keep moving forward. Take risks, say yes to things that challenge you, and trust that the work you’ve put in will open doors – even the ones you didn’t see coming.</span></p><p><span>“And when things get tough, which they will, remember how far you’ve come. Remember the resilience, the courage, and the support system that got you here at . When King received her acceptance letter, “I was so deeply moved by the university because there is something incredibly powerful about being part of a community that supports you even when you don’t believe in yourself.”</span></p><p><span>Within her commencement speech, King read “The Journey,” a poem by Mary&nbsp;Oliver, which tells the story of a person who, through all the cacophony of others’ voices, finds their own voice and strides bravely deeper into the world.</span></p><p><span>Her message to her CAHS peers was that “You must do what .&nbsp;best for you first. After graduation, the road may not be clear, and I want to remind you that you are capable. You are enough. Your path is exactly what it . meant to be. And if you ever feel lost, remember that you are never alone. There are communities, just like , that will believe in you just as deeply, even when you doubt yourself.</span></p><p><span>"Take this moment to honor your resilience. Stout became so much more than just a place to study; it became a place that shaped us, challenged us and helped us grow in ways we never expected.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>“We have learned that spoke of her prior fear of public speaking, overcoming this fear, and her recognition of the importance of teaching soft skills, like communication, teamwork and critical thinking. It is these soft skills that have made her a trusted leader, she said.</span></p><p><span>“By showing up as my true self, listening to understand, and getting to know my team members on a personal level, I demonstrate my commitment to them. And that is worth celebrating,” he said. “My freshman year I was very worried about pleasing the people around me. She is a 2010 graduate in&nbsp;</span><a href="/programs/bs-technology-education"><span>technology education</span></a><span> and&nbsp;</span><a href="/programs/bs-manufacturing-engineering"><span>manufacturing engineering</span></a><span>.</span></p><p><span>The Graduate Studies graduates will be addressed by&nbsp;<strong>Laura Knudsen</strong>, a registered dietitian nutritionist and clinical dietitian with Mayo Clinic Health System. She is a 2005 dietetics alum and earned her master's&nbsp;in food and nutritional sciences in 2008.</span></p><p><span>The ceremonies will include music by the Symphonic Band, directed by&nbsp;<strong>Erika Svanoe</strong>; the Jazz Orchestra,&nbsp;directed by <strong>Jim Anderson</strong>; and the Chamber Choir, Symphonic Singers and Devil Tones Acapella, directed by&nbsp;<strong>Jerry Hui</strong>.</span></p><p><span>Students and members of the community can share comments and photos on social media platforms using the hashtag It has allowed me to become more innovative and creative. I have developed lifelong skills … that I can use in and out of industry. It has allowed me to turn a hobby of tinkering with computers and technology into a professional career in information technology. Miranda said that “being open to meeting new people when in college was one of the best choices I ended up making.” She also thanked her professors for their support “throughout my time at Stout on a personal level and on a daily basis.”</span></li></ul><p><span>In the Graduate Studies ceremony, Frank highlighted:</span></p><ul><li><span><strong>Anne Redmond</strong>, of Fredonia, who earned a master . in construction management. She faced a personal battle with cancer, a hospitalization due to COVID, and the loss of both her husband and mother. “Life got to be so hard sometimes. I was so close to just dropping it all and moving on. I'm glad I didn't. This is a proud moment for me, especially since I am in my mid-50s.”</span></li><li><span><strong>Aaron Hendricks</strong>, of Rice Lake, who earned a master . in clinical mental health counseling. He said the “Stout experience has been significant because of its unique ability to practically apply theory. We were hands-on, gaining skills with each other, the first week.” He enjoyed the challenge of considering “the diverse range of world views and life experiences of the faculty and my peers. This further prepared me for counseling as it taught me the joy of diversity, the joy of walking with someone who lives in a different reality and learning how to connect as fellow humans on a journey towards happiness together.”&nbsp;</span></li><li><span><strong>Stephen Aduboffour</strong>, of Ghana, who earned a master . in food science and technology. Living in a new country with a different style of learning was challenging. “With the support and encouragement of the (professors), I was able to adjust to the new system. Specifically, my anthropology professor who told me he went through the very same thing,” he said.</span></p><p><span>Then, he had to get through COVID. “Our success here at college has been defined by our ability to adapt to an ever-changing world. We met people along the way and had to say goodbye to many of them. We joined communities and maybe even created them. You decided to take a risk – to take on a big challenge called Graduate School. Despite those unique and sometimes significant responsibilities, you took the risk and turned it into an opportunity.</span></p><p><span>“Whatever your ‘why’ is, one thing we all have in common is we have chosen to grow.
