Students share messages of community, kindness, belonging with graduates at Dec. 20 ceremony

Two alumni guest speakers and three students addressed 527 of their peers as they celebrated graduation from �� – Wisconsin ��. �� – on Dec. 20. During two ceremonies in Johnson Fieldhouse, the alumni speakers encouraged graduates to embrace the unknown and be proud of their Stout journeys as they positively impact their communities and the world:

Polaris Inc. Director of Industrial Design Michael Leighton (’02), B.F.A. industrial design, addressed College of Arts and Human Sciences and College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management undergraduates.
�� . Associate Dean and School of Education Director Shannon Donnelly (’00, ’05), B.S. vocational rehabilitation and M.S. education, addressed Graduate Studies graduates.

The three student speakers shared messages on the strength of community, sharing simple acts of kindness and belonging, and being a voice for others:

Grace Rucker, of Oronoco, Minnesota, B.S. real estate property management and B.S. hotel, restaurant & tourism management, CSTEMM speaker.

Embrace life ��. uncertainties

In his experiences in design, Leighton said he “found moments of uncertainty to be some of the most valuable, rewarding, surprising and impactful in my life and in my career.”

He offered graduates ideas that helped him navigate, embrace and get the most out of life ��. uncertainties:

“Stay curious: If you approach challenges with youthful curiosity, I guarantee you will learn something of value and surprise yourself along the way, while becoming increasingly comfortable with uncertainty.”
“Pursue your passion: Leverage, chase, and pursue your passion. It will guide your own unique path and be a reminder of what is most important to you.”
“Small hinges swing big doors: Never underestimate the value of the impact you can make in this world. The work you do and your actions and contributions matter.”
“Invest in your community: Paying it forward and taking a proactive, caring interest by contributing to the wellness of your community is worth the effort, and you will get back more than you give. An investment in your community is an investment in yourself.”

“It is now the obligation you own as a graduate of this great institution, to apply your knowledge, skills and craft to tackle life ��. challenges in ways that improve our world for us, our neighbors and for generations to come,” Leighton said.

#StoutProud is a way of life

When Donnelly first came to �� 30 years ago as an undergraduate and member of the women ��. basketball team, she admitted she was far more interested in being an athlete-student than a student-athlete. She had no idea what to major in, much less what career path to follow. But a conversation with a professor changed her life.

“She said, ‘If your plans of playing in the WNBA don’t work out, I think you should consider being a teacher.’ She suggested an intro class; I took it, and now I’m in my 26th year as an educator. All because a Stout professor saw something in me that I hadn’t yet seen in myself,” said Donnelly, whose first teaching job was in special education.

Donnelly soon returned to �� for her master ��. degree. “The relationships I had built and the support I experienced made it clear – there was no place else I’d rather be,” she said.

She has served in several leadership roles within education, including director of pupil services, high school principal and superintendent. And last spring, she jumped at the opportunity to return to �� yet again, this time as director of the School of Education.

“I didn’t hesitate. Coming back to the place that shaped my entire adult life was truly a dream come true,” said Donnelly, who on her first day back on campus “felt the true meaning of being Stout Proud. It ��. not just a slogan – it ��. a way of life.”

This core feeling was at the heart of her message to students: “Wherever you go, Stout Proud will forever be part of your journey.”

‘We lift each other up.’

Moore reminded her fellow graduates that �� “isn’t just a place where we earned a degree. It ��. where we learned what it means to support and be supported. To show up for one another. To build something bigger than ourselves.

“That became my legacy at this university. Being the loudest voice in any room, if it meant being a light for students who once felt like I did. Becoming a beacon for the lost. A wrecking ball to barriers that stood in their way,” said Moore, who was the director of Legislative Affairs with Stout Student Association.

“While Stout has been a cornerstone for teaching us what it means to take part in a community bigger than ourselves, I implore you to explore what this truly means to you,” she added.

“Our community at Stout is made up of people from many corners of the world, every background imaginable and every walk of life. And yet, we found connection, we learned from one another, challenged each other and grew together.

“That ��. the kind of community that doesn’t fade after graduation. That ��. the kind of community that carries us forward into our careers, into our neighborhoods, into the next chapters of our lives. It reminds us that no matter how big the world feels, we are never truly alone. We carry each other with us. We lift each other up,” Moore said.

Go in kindness

Rucker asked her fellow graduates to reflect on what makes them unique and what their purpose is. Reflecting on her own purpose, she shared a moment from her internship as a Disney cast member when she worked with Make-A-Wish children.

“There was one little girl I’ll never forget. Her family came to watch the fireworks, but every reserved viewing area was full. It had been a long, hot day, and sometimes the magic at Disney can start to feel routine – but not that night,” Rucker said.

She asked another cast member to cover her station, while she escorted the little girl and her family to one of the best spots she knew – a quiet bridge near Cinderella ��. carriage, tucked away from the commotion.

“I knelt down to her level, let her choose buttons and stickers and made sure her family had everything they needed. Then she looked up at me and asked, ‘Can I give you a hug?’ She wrapped her arms around me and whispered, ‘This is even better than I imagined,’” Rucker remembered.

From that moment, Rucker will forever carry a lesson: “Our purpose is often found in simple acts of kindness. That spirit of caring, of creating joy for others, is what I see reflected in all of us here today,” she said, looking out across the Class of 2025. “We share the same Stout values: resilience, creativity, professionalism and the drive to make things better.”

Helping others feel belonging

When Eggum transferred to �� during her undergraduate degree, she thought she would complete her classes, graduate and move on. “What I didn’t know then is that �� had very different plans for me,” she said.

“Because of ��, I found my voice. I discovered passions I didn’t know I had. I uncovered strengths I didn’t realize were mine. This university didn’t just change my path; it changed who I believed I could become. And today, standing here, I am, and always will be, StoutProud,” she said.

Eggum returned to �� to manage Stoutfitters, the university bookstore. Her career then pivoted, and she went on to earn her master ��. degree. She is now the orientation coordinator and project manager for the Dean of Students Office, managing projects that strengthen communication, improve operational processes and enhance student experiences.

“My hope is simple: to help others feel the same belonging and encouragement and possibility that I found here,” Eggum said, encouraging graduates to “take every opportunity, even the ones that feel small, unexpected or uncertain, because you never know where it will lead you.

“As we graduate, we have the opportunity to extend that same support to others. To lead with compassion. To build workplaces and communities where people feel valued. To create change in ways both big and small. To use our voices, especially on days when someone else hasn’t yet found theirs.”

Chancellor, students, alumni to speak in two ceremonies at Johnson Fieldhouse

Fall commencement will be held for 527 graduates on Saturday, Dec. 20, at ��.

A total of 399 undergraduate and 128 graduate students will receive degrees. Two ceremonies will be held at Johnson Fieldhouse:

10 a.m., College of Arts & Human Sciences and College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Management
2 p.m., Graduate Studies

The ceremonies can also be seen via livestream on the �� commencement website and at the Memorial Student Center.

Provost Glendalí Rodríguez will host the ceremonies. Chancellor Katherine Frank will provide remarks to the graduates and confer degrees.

Three graduating students will speak:

Sophia Moore, of Red Wing, Minnesota, applied social science, CAHS speaker.
Grace Rucker, of Oronoco, Minnesota, real estate property management and hotel, restaurant & tourism management, CSTEMM speaker.

Two alumni will also be guest speakers. Graduate Studies will be addressed by Shannon Donnelly (’00, ’05), associate dean and director of �� . School of Education, B.S. in vocational rehabilitation and M.S. in education.

The ceremonies will include music by the Ludington Guard Band, directed by James Woodford.

Student speakers share messages of strength in community with nearly 1,180 graduates at May 10 commencement ceremony

Three alumni guest speakers and three students addressed 1,174 of their peers as they celebrated graduation from �� – Wisconsin ��. �� – on May 10.

During three ceremonies in Johnson Fieldhouse, the alumni speakers all credited �� with helping them build connections, strengthen transformational relationships – both professional and personal – and shape them and their careers:

Kraus-Anderson Chief Operating Officer/Executive Vice President Rich Jacobson, 1988 B.S. in industrial technology, addressed College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management undergraduates.
Northwood Technical College President John Will, 2017 Ed.D. in career and technical education, addressed College of Arts and Human Sciences undergraduates.
Wakanda Elementary School Principal Diane Schofield, 2007 M.S. in education, addressed Graduate Studies graduates.

Jacobson and Schofield grew up in Dunn County and called �� home long before they stepped onto campus as students. Will spent time on campus as well, visiting his future wife when she attended, long before he enrolled at the university himself.

Building transformational relationships

Quoting author Brené Brown, Jacobson said, “In a culture that tells us to hustle, prove, and perfect, the most radical and courageous act is to show up and let ourselves be seen – especially in our relationships.”

Jacobson learned not just the technical skills at �� that launched his career, but also the “value of integrity, teamwork and grit. Those lessons shaped the leader I became – and the colleague, husband, father and friend I strive to be every day.

“To the Class of 2025: You are entering a world filled with complexity and challenge – but also extraordinary opportunity. You’ve already built the technical skills to succeed. What will carry you even further are the relationships you’ve made – and the ones you’ll build as you move forward.

“Some of the most meaningful connections of your life may have already started right here at Stout. Nurture them. Expand them. Lean on them. Because at the end of the day, it ��. not just what you build in this world that matters – it ��. who you build it with,” Jacobson said.

Northwood Technical College President John Will

Will thinks his education here played a critical role in opening doors and creating opportunities for him, including being invited to speak at commencement on the very day his daughter, Anna, received her diploma.

“You have knowledge, relationships and opportunities that seemed distant just a few years ago. Data tells us that virtually all of you already have a job or will very soon,” Will said. “And you’ll find that your new degree will open more doors after you enter the workforce, just like my degree did for me. When I look at you, I actually don’t see a finish line as much as I see a starting point that represents the leaders of tomorrow.

“What I’ve realized over the years is that achieving what you’re about to achieve also comes with some responsibilities. You are about to be an alum. So, this university ��. reputation is now about what you do in the coming years. How you choose to live your life, and how you choose to contribute. You have a responsibility to give to your employer and your community. And through that, you become Stout ��. reputation, and you will inspire another generation of graduates and leaders,” he said.

Wakanda Elementary School Principal Diane Schofield

Schofield said her “childhood is woven into the fabric of this campus. I was part of it before I even knew it. This place isn’t just where I grew up – it helped shape who I am.”

In college, Schofield studied biochemistry, cellular and molecular biology and was planning a future in medicine or research. “I learned that spending eight hours a day talking to mice and rat heart cells wasn’t exactly my calling,” she said. “Because what I love – what I need – is people. Conversation. Connection.”

After graduating, she earned her science teaching license and built a classroom based on growth, laughter and learning. Her education came full circle when she earned her master ��. from ��. “The coursework transformed me. Courses in program evaluation and instructional design opened doors in my thinking – doors I didn’t even know were there,” she said.

Now, as an elementary school principal, she “looks back and the destination may be very different from the one I envisioned when I was first asked what I want to be when I grow up. But truthfully, it is exactly where I am meant to be.

“Some of you are living the exact plan you set out with. And some of you? You’ve already learned that plans can change – and that ��. okay. In fact, it can be more than okay, it can be beautiful. Because wherever life leads you next, you now carry something powerful: the knowledge, the tools and the conﬁdence to thrive. You are ready. You are capable,” Schofield said.

Finding strength in community

Although Kaunda graduated with a double major, he had no clear path when he started his educational journey at ��. “I just had a desire to make an impact and a willingness to learn as I went. And guess what? That was enough,” he said.

Kaunda ��. message to his CSTEMM peers was that “You don’t have to have it all figured out right now. Because I’ve learned that life isn’t about having a perfectly mapped-out plan. It ��. about the direction you’re moving in. It ��. about waking up each day with a commitment to grow – just 1% better than the day before. That ��. all. One small step forward, every day.

“The next step might be exciting, intimidating, or completely unexpected, but the important thing is to keep moving forward. Take risks, say yes to things that challenge you, and trust that the work you’ve put in will open doors – even the ones you didn’t see coming.

“And when things get tough, which they will, remember how far you’ve come. Remember the resilience, the courage, and the support system that got you here at ��. Use that as your anchor,” he said.

King ��. seven-year journey to earn her degree was interrupted by the pandemic and then by a debilitating trauma that led her to medically withdraw from ��.

As King began to heal, her mom encouraged her to reapply. When King received her acceptance letter, “I was so deeply moved by the university because there is something incredibly powerful about being part of a community that supports you even when you don’t believe in yourself.”

Within her commencement speech, King read “The Journey,” a poem by Mary Oliver, which tells the story of a person who, through all the cacophony of others’ voices, finds their own voice and strides bravely deeper into the world.

Her message to her CAHS peers was that “You must do what ��. best for you first. After graduation, the road may not be clear, and I want to remind you that you are capable. You are enough. Your path is exactly what it ��. meant to be. And if you ever feel lost, remember that you are never alone. There are communities, just like ��, that will believe in you just as deeply, even when you doubt yourself.

"Take this moment to honor your resilience. Whatever your next steps may be, remember that success is not defined by how quickly you get there, but by how you stay true to your own journey,” she said.

Srimukhi Vemavarapu Graduate Studies student speaker

Vemavarapu came to �� for an education, but what she found was a home — a place that has given her memories, friendships and lessons to last a lifetime.

When she first arrived at ��, she worried, “‘How am I going to do it?,’ because I was entering an entirely new world, leaving behind the comfort cocoons of home.”

Then, she remembered something her mom always says, “A house is just some concrete walls put together, but home is where the heart is.”

So, Vemavarapu adapted and made a new home and a circle of friends. “We created a new kind of family here — one made of shared laughter and giving a shoulder to each other for support. Stout became so much more than just a place to study; it became a place that shaped us, challenged us and helped us grow in ways we never expected.

“We have learned that nothing is impossible when we take that first step, when we lean on the support around us, and when we believe in ourselves,” she said.

‘Be a difference maker’: 510 graduates at Dec. 14 commencement ceremony look to impact the future

While snowflakes dusted the sidewalks outside, 510 smiling graduates crossed the commencement stage at �� – Wisconsin ��. �� – on Dec. 14.

At two ceremonies in Johnson Fieldhouse, two alumni guest speakers and three graduates of the Class of 2024 shared warm messages of overcoming the uncertainty of success, living as your genuine self and the power of communication and connections – all lessons they learned through their academic and personal journeys at ��.

Emily Fanucci, engineering manager at Advanced Molding Technologies, in Circle Pines, Minn., addressed the undergraduate ceremony; and Laura Knudsen, outpatient clinical dietitian, diabetes care and education specialist with Mayo Clinic Health System, the Graduate Studies ceremony.

Ceremonies were held at 10 a.m. for the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management and the College of Arts and Human Sciences; and at 2 p.m. for Graduate Studies.

Student speakers were:

Undergraduate ceremony: Ethan Myers, of Pleasant Prairie, packaging; and Hannah Timm, of Fremont, family and consumer sciences education
Graduate Studies ceremony: Kalsow, of Menomonie, master ��. in clinical mental health counseling.

‘Be a difference maker’

Fanucci, a 2010 graduate in technology education and manufacturing engineering, spoke of her prior fear of public speaking, overcoming this fear, and her recognition of the importance of teaching soft skills, like communication, teamwork and critical thinking. It is these soft skills that have made her a trusted leader, she said.

“By showing up as my true self, listening to understand, and getting to know my team members on a personal level, I demonstrate my commitment to them. By nurturing these human connections, I empower my team to grow and succeed,” Fanucci said.

“Whether you’ve excelled in hands-on learning or in more traditional academic settings, this university has prepared you to succeed,” she added. “And as you take that next step into your careers, I hope you continue to remember the lessons that Stout has taught you – not just the technical expertise you’ve gained, but the importance of staying open to growth and learning in all areas of your life.

“As you move forward, find the courage to speak up and share your thoughts. The more you trust yourself and your ideas, the more you’ll discover the power of your own voice.”

Knudsen, a 2005 dietetics and 2008 master's in food and nutritional sciences alum, emphasized the importance of creating connections to strengthen collaborations, as well as employability now and down the road.

“�� . focus on hands-on learning helped me to make connections in the community, which ended up being key for all of my jobs after graduation,” Knudsen said.

“Know that you have connections at Stout, you have connections through your work experience, you have connections through your classmates and friendships. We are meant to have relationships and connections with others.

“Use your resources to collaborate with others to excel where you are. Use your resources to help you get where you want to be careerwise. Thrive in your field. Be a difference maker. You are qualified,” she said.

Embracing their stories with no regrets

Myers and Timm encouraged their peers to embrace their own unique stories, to continue to be brave through challenges and not to confuse what-ifs with regrets.

“Each of us has had to dig deep. And we have grown – not just as students, but as individuals. We’ve learned, adapted and seen the world through new perspectives,” Timm said.

“I know there ��. a lot of uncertainty out there. We don’t always know what comes next,” she added. “But that ��. also the beauty of it. The unknown brings with it endless possibilities. So, I urge you: Embrace it. Embrace the challenges, embrace the change, and above all, embrace the opportunity to keep growing. Continue to be a lifelong learner, far past the hallways of ��.”

Myers urged his peers not to compare their stories to others, nor the choices they made.

“Your story is what got you here. And that is worth celebrating,” he said. “My freshman year I was very worried about pleasing the people around me. I wanted to make sure that what I was doing was seen as ‘cool.’ I had looked at the stories other people were creating and decided that my story should be the same.”

But those who know Myers, who spends his weekends as a street magician, know that isn’t true anymore.

“Magic is now a defining part of who I am, and it is how most people know me. And if I was caught up in my what-ifs, if I was full of regret, if I went back and stopped doing this thing I loved, I’d lose any sort of individualism I had. Remember how your unique experience brought you here,” he said.

Timm and Myers are both recipients of the Samuel E. Wood Medallion, the highest nonacademic award for students at ��, at the 2024 Leadership Awards. Fewer than 1% of full-time students receive the award. It is presented to seniors who have contributed in student activities, leadership and scholastic ability. Winners are chosen by a committee representing faculty, staff and students.

‘A future waiting to be illuminated’

Kalsow ��. message of growth was born of the poem “New Beginnings” by Stephanie Lane Sutton.

For years, Kalsow was afraid of success and what that would mean in both their education and future career, even to the point of letting their fear draw them near academic probation.

Through Sutton ��. poem and with faculty support, Kalsow was inspired to “strive for success, own that effort, and tolerate the subsequent fear over and over again.”

Sutton ��. poem begins: “what is a state line if not a line in the sand? on one side, the life you know. on the other, a future waiting to be illuminated.”

Kalsow noted that commencement is a transition in life and asked their peers, “How much is your future illuminated? Who do you trust to light your future if you’re not able to? … What does it mean to be yourself? What could happen when you engage with the world as your full self? … Venture forth into new beginnings. Your next path starts as you embrace success and cross this commencement stage.”

Fall commencement will be held for 510 graduates on Saturday, Dec. 14, at ��.

A total of 414 undergraduate and 96 Graduate Studies students will receive degrees.

Two ceremonies will be held in Johnson Fieldhouse:

10 a.m., College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management; and College of Arts and Human Sciences
2 p.m., Graduate Studies

The ceremonies also can be seen via livestream on the �� commencement website and at the Memorial Student Center.

Provost Glendalí Rodríguez will host the ceremonies. Chancellor Katherine Frank will provide remarks to the graduates and confer degrees.

Three graduates also will speak:

10 a.m., Ethan Myers, of Pleasant Prairie, packaging; and Hannah Timm, of Fremont, family and consumer sciences education
2 p.m., Kalsow, of Menomonie, master ��. in clinical mental health counseling.

Two alumni will be guest speakers. The undergraduates will be addressed by Emily Fanucci, engineering manager at Advanced Molding Technologies, in Circle Pines, Minn. She is a 2010 �� graduate in technology education and manufacturing engineering.

The Graduate Studies graduates will be addressed by Laura Knudsen, a registered dietitian nutritionist and clinical dietitian with Mayo Clinic Health System. She is a 2005 dietetics alum and earned her master's in food and nutritional sciences in 2008.

Students and members of the �� community can share comments and photos on �� social media platforms using the hashtag #StoutGrad2024.

Diplomas will be mailed to students four to six weeks after final grades are issued.

Celebratory smiles lit up the faces of 1,037 graduates as they crossed the stage to receive a higher education degree on May 4 from Wisconsin ��. ��, ��.

Along with their diplomas, they departed the three commencement ceremonies at Johnson Fieldhouse with inspirational advice from three alumni speakers, who have become corporate and community leaders, and three of their peers from the Class of 2024.

“Practice the Greek ideal ‘a sound mind and a sound body.’ Practice the highest ethical standards, work hard, continue to learn, play hard. Do this for yourself, for your family, for your community, for the nation and for the world,” said Dallas Pankowski, a 1960 bachelor ��. and 1961 master ��. graduate who along with his wife, Edye, received honorary doctorate degrees recognizing their highly successful business and a lifelong commitment to learning, living an active lifestyle and philanthropy. “Go out, make it happen and be Stout Proud.”

Shelly Ibach was a student commencement speaker when she graduated in 1981 from ��. Now CEO of Sleep Number Corp. in Minneapolis since 2012, she advised graduates to be courageous and find their “red thread. A red thread is your defining characteristic, a signature strength that is as unique to you as your fingerprint. It ��. an innate gift that guides you in good times and in times of adversity. As you know, it takes perseverance, resilience and courage to navigate all the trials and tribulations and find your path forward.”

In the Graduate Studies ceremony, Emily Berge, a �� 2002 bachelor ��. graduate and 2006 master ��. graduate, licensed professional counselor and Eau Claire City Council president, told graduates that each one of them has what it takes to be a leader. She encouraged them to practice self-care and be resilient leaders.

“To be resilient is to engage in activities that make you smile, to surround yourself with people who you can be your true self with, to treat yourself with the same kindness that you give to your best friend, and to protect that time in your day when you feel the most peaceful and happy. Because I promise you that life will turn you upside down at times but resilience will ground you.”

She added that she had to miss her graduate degree commencement in 2006 because she was nine months pregnant. That child, a son, is graduating from high school this spring and plans to attend �� in the fall.

“You probably already know this, but Stout is a very well-regarded institution. People know that Stout graduates are hard-working, creative thinkers and problem solvers. I am proud that he chose Stout, and I look forward when he can be like you all and be a Stout graduate,” Berge said.

Ceremonies were held at 9:30 a.m. for the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management; 1:30 p.m. for the College of Arts and Human Sciences; and at 5 p.m. for Graduate Studies.

CSTEMM ceremony, Kat Schlauderaff, of Chaska, Minn., digital marketing technology:

“Every single (graduate) in this room had to fight to be here today. The hours, sweat, determination and, for some of us, tears that were poured into our academics should not go unnoticed. For all the memories you have where you thought you wouldn’t make it, you thought you’d fail, or you considered dropping out, you soon will have the memory of moving that tassel and knowing that you persevered. You’ve made it,” Schlauderaff said.

“Embrace the obstacles that lie ahead with the same tenacity and courage that you’ve shown throughout your journey at Stout. Let the memories of your triumphs serve as a reminder of your inner strength and capability. Dare to dream big, pursue all your passions relentlessly, and never underestimate your ability to overcome hardships. Together, let us embark on this new adventure with confidence, resilience and an unwavering belief in our ability to make a difference in the world.”

CAHS ceremony, Genevieve Czaplewski, of Grand Island, Neb., applied social science and a member of the Blue Devil gymnastics team:

“What my diploma says I studied does not even begin to cover all that I learned during my time at Stout. My professors, classmates and teammates were the catalysts to such immense personal growth that I don’t think freshman me would recognize who ��. speaking up here,” she said.

Czaplewski learned in a class that the point of Greek myth performances was to get the audience to think about what they want to do in life, what makes them tick and how that will affect the person next to them. Asking herself those questions, she came to new conclusions about her life.

“We are more than our degrees and our jobs. You have the power to inspire yourself and others with what you do. Move forward with the intent of sowing positive change in every facet of your life,” she said.

Graduate Studies ceremony, Sarah Jasa, of St. Paul, marriage and family therapy:

“As you stand on the precipice of the future, ready to commence in different directions and new journeys, I want to take an opportunity to remind you of the values of �� that have helped shape and guide you throughout your time here. Honor, industry, skill and learning. It is no small feat to pursue a master's or doctoral degree; it takes a true love of learning and commitment to bettering your fields with the skills and knowledge you obtain. You all have demonstrated wholly this powerful passion and commitment to a lifetime of learning,” Jasa said.

“I encourage you to remember the challenges you’ve faced and the obstacles you overcame, the countless hours you’ve poured into this degree and the many sacrifices you’ve made to make it here today. Each trial and hardship serves as a testament to your determination and resilience; you have proven yourselves capable of demonstrating the values of ��.

“The path to progress and success is rarely linear, it surely wasn’t for me. There will be moments of doubt, setbacks, and even failure. However, my dear friend and cohort member Susie recently reminded me that life is not defined by our greatest successes and happiness, but the failures, setbacks and tragedies. It is the joys and small victories we hang on the posts of those defining moments. It is during these times that your true character will radiate brightest and allow you to fully embrace adversity as a catalyst for change and growth,” she said.

Chancellor Katherine Frank congratulated graduates on their achievement and a job well done, while providing examples of 12 inspiring graduates across the three ceremonies. “This is a world that needs you more than ever; it needs your knowledge, your talent and your vision,” she said.

Provost Glendalí Rodríguez presided over the ceremonies, which included music by the �� Symphonic Band and the Jazz Orchestra, directed by Aaron Durst; and the Chamber Choir, Symphonic Singers and Devil Tones Acapella, directed by Jerry Hui.

Spring commencement will be held for 1,037 graduates on Saturday, May 4, at University of Wisconsin-Stout.

A total of 828 undergraduate and 209 Graduate Studies students will receive degrees.

Three ceremonies will be held in Johnson Fieldhouse:

5 p.m., Graduate Studies

The Graduate Studies graduates will be addressed by Emily Berge, Eau Claire City Council president, a licensed professional counselor and owner of Wellspring Counseling and Consulting. She has degrees from �� in human development and family studies, 2002, and clinical mental health counseling, 2006.

Also speaking will be Dallas Pankowski, who earned bachelor ��. and master ��. degrees in industrial education from �� in 1960 and 1961. �� will award honorary doctorates to Dallas and his wife, Edye, of Plover.

The Pankowskis own Pankowski Associates, a real estate construction management company in the Stevens Point area. They have supported �� students through two annual STEM scholarships and a recent major gift for the Recreation Complex renovation.

The ceremonies will include music by the �� Symphonic Band and the Jazz Orchestra, directed by Aaron Durst; and the Chamber Choir, Symphonic Singers and Devil Tones Acapella, directed by Jerry Hui.

Two ceremonies highlight success stories from class of 2023 along with words of wisdom from two graduates, alum

Smiles and warmth filled Johnson Fieldhouse at �� on an early winter day as 526 graduates received degrees Dec. 16 in two commencement ceremonies.

Chancellor Katherine Frank addressed graduates and their guests while two members of the class of 2023 and an alum also spoke.

Frank congratulated graduates on their achievement and a job well done. “This is a world that needs you, your knowledge, your talent and your vision,” she said.

Ceremonies were held at 10 a.m. for the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management and the College of Arts and Human Sciences; and 2 p.m. for Graduate Studies.

In each of her speeches, Frank cited examples of inspiring graduates. In the undergraduate ceremony, she highlighted:

Ariana Enciso, of Fond du Lac, who graduated in applied social science. “I am most proud of not just completing my degree but doing so while actively engaging in extracurricular activities and advocating for social justice because I deeply care about it.” She also cited the “personal growth, tenacity and the unwavering dedication I have discovered within myself.”
Julia Baxter, of Chippewa Falls, who graduated in engineering technology. “My Stout education has allowed me to be more confident working in the field of engineering. It has allowed me to become more innovative and creative. I have developed lifelong skills … that I can use in and out of industry. It has also shown me that once you set your mind to something you can accomplish anything.” She has been hired full time as an engineer with Phillips Medisize.
Nicolas Langenfeld, of Wild Rose, who graduated in computer networking and information technology. “My Stout experience has had a profound impact on my life. It has allowed me to turn a hobby of tinkering with computers and technology into a professional career in information technology. My experience has not only given me the technical skills to be able to do my job, but it has also given me the soft skills to develop as a person and become more sociable.” He has been hired as a full-time information security analyst at Waupaca Foundry, where he has been interned for the past three years.

Monica Miranda, of Eau Claire, who graduatedin 3½ years with a double major in marketing and business education, and business administration. She has been hired as a marketing teacher in the Colfax School District. Miranda said that “being open to meeting new people when in college was one of the best choices I ended up making.” She also thanked her professors for their support “throughout my time at Stout on a personal level and on a daily basis.”

In the Graduate Studies ceremony, Frank highlighted:

Anne Redmond, of Fredonia, who earned a master ��. in construction management. She faced a personal battle with cancer, a hospitalization due to COVID, and the loss of both her husband and mother. “Life got to be so hard sometimes. I was so close to just dropping it all and moving on. I'm glad I didn't. This is a proud moment for me, especially since I am in my mid-50s.”
Aaron Hendricks, of Rice Lake, who earned a master ��. in clinical mental health counseling. He said the “Stout experience has been significant because of its unique ability to practically apply theory. We were hands-on, gaining skills with each other, the first week.” He enjoyed the challenge of considering “the diverse range of world views and life experiences of the faculty and my peers. This further prepared me for counseling as it taught me the joy of diversity, the joy of walking with someone who lives in a different reality and learning how to connect as fellow humans on a journey towards happiness together.”
Stephen Aduboffour, of Ghana, who earned a master ��. in food science and technology. Living in a new country with a different style of learning was challenging. “With the support and encouragement of the (professors), I was able to adjust to the new system. They were friendly and welcoming and were always more than willing to go the extra mile. Growing up, I never imagined I would one day study in the United States. With the opportunity and financial assistance Stout offered me, I have been able to finish my master's in three semesters, and it makes me feel Stout Proud and hope this inspires others to also pursue their dreams.”

Frank thanked the graduates for “all that you have contributed to �� and the larger community through the commitment, honesty and hard work reflected across all areas of your university experience.”

Alum and student speakers

Joshua Carr, a Minneapolis native who graduated in 2017 with a degree in construction, returned to speak in the CAHS and CSTEMM undergraduate ceremony. He is a project manager for commercial general contractor Kraus-Anderson of Minneapolis.

He recounted how his father died when he was a student and didn’t get to see him graduate. “You’ve faced your own challenges,” he told graduates, “but what we share is the drive and desire to continue down our path!

“Remind yourself that you’ve already got a track record of making some really great choices, including studying at ��. Your experience at Stout has equipped you with the hands-on career training, tools and experiences to build your career. And the connections you’ve made here will serve you well into your future,” he said.

Dayton Feldt, of Beloit, who received a Bachelor of Science degree in video production, also spoke in the undergraduate ceremony. He, too, lost his father while at ��, soon after arriving.

“The thing that kept me going that night and the days moving forward, was the support others gave me. My roommate giving me chocolate ice cream that night and a hug, did so much for me. My professors reaching out, offering me support and extensions on assignments. Specifically, my anthropology professor who told me he went through the very same thing,” he said.

Then, he had to get through COVID. “Our success here at college has been defined by our ability to adapt to an ever-changing world. We met people along the way and had to say goodbye to many of them. We joined communities and maybe even created them. We pushed forward, we persevered … And that ��. what we are going to keep doing through the rest of our lives.”

Polly Berendes, of La Crosse, spoke in the Graduate Studies ceremony. She received a Master of Science in training and human resource development.

She thought about why she returned to school, after 20 years, career changes and three children. “Because I didn’t know if I could, and I did not know what would happen unless I tried. And I am so glad I tried,” she said.

“You, fellow graduates, are here today because you also chose to do something hard and be open to more. You decided to take a risk – to take on a big challenge called Graduate School. And I would guess that like me, most of you took that risk as working adults, perhaps with kids of your own or elderly parents to care for. Full-time jobs, volunteering on boards, helping with committees. Despite those unique and sometimes significant responsibilities, you took the risk and turned it into an opportunity.

“Whatever your ‘why’ is, one thing we all have in common is we have chosen to grow. To expand. To change. Graduation is not an end to learning. In fact, it most likely marks the beginning of another corner to turn in the journey we are each on in which we must use our skills, talents and abilities to make our communities and world better,” Berendes said.

When Jesus Ambriz thinks back to 2019, he sees a young man who was excited to begin college and play football at �� — but one who had a lot to learn.

I joined the �� community in August 2005. Prior to that, I worked in a variety of professional positions related to architecture (city planning, neighborhood planning, residential and commercial design). Chancellor, two students, alum to speak in two ceremonies at Johnson Fieldhouse

Fall commencement will be held for 526 graduates on Saturday, Dec. 16, at ��.

A total of 440 undergraduate and 86 Graduate Studies students will receive degrees.

Two ceremonies will be held in Johnson Fieldhouse:

10 a.m., College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management; and the College of Arts and Human Sciences
2 p.m., Graduate Studies.

Graduates celebrate during a recent commencement ceremony at ��. This year ��. ceremonies will be on Saturday, Dec. 16. / ��

The ceremonies also can be seen via livestream on the �� commencement website and at the Memorial Student Center.

Provost Glendalí Rodríguez will host the ceremonies. Chancellor Katherine Frank will provide remarks to the graduates and confer degrees.

Two graduates and an alum also will speak:

10 a.m., Dayton Feldt, of Beloit, who is receiving a Bachelor of Science degree in video production; Joshua Carr, a Minneapolis native who graduated in 2017 with a degree in construction. He is a project manager for commercial general contractor Kraus-Anderson of Minneapolis.
2 p.m., Polly Berendes, of La Crosse, who is receiving a Master of Science in training and human resource development.

Students and members of the �� community can share comments and photos on �� social media platforms using the hashtag #StoutGrad2023.

Diplomas will be mailed to students four to six weeks after final grades are issued.
