Five university students among 70 statewide to receive $7,000 award

At first, Grace Pederson couldn’t believe what she was seeing. The University of Wisconsin-Stout student received a message that she had won a $7,000 scholarship.

Her first thought was, “Oh my gosh! I better double-check that this isn't a mistake before calling mom!” she said.

It wasn’t a mistake. Pederson is one of 70 UW System students chosen randomly to receive the scholarship. The System announced the scholarships Nov. 16 to celebrate the success of its Vax Up! “70 for 70” campaign to help reduce COVID-19 infection rates across campuses and statewide.

Pederson, a sophomore from Eau Claire, is one of five �� students — or $35,000 total — to receive the scholarship.

“It ��. a huge honor and will help me explore my passions,” said Pederson, who has switched her major twice and now is in the environmental science program.

She has worked part time to help pay for her education, so receiving a major award such as this out of the blue still is a shock. “This scholarship will certainly take some stress off,” she said.

Pederson also is thankful for the opportunity to get a COVID-19 vaccine, which qualified her for the System scholarship drawing but is even more valuable to her personally.

“Getting vaccinated was a necessity for me. I have multiple people in my family who have compromised immune systems,” she said.

As of Thursday, Nov. 18, 78% of students and 91% of faculty and staff at �� have been vaccinated.

“We are so proud of our students who stepped up to the plate and helped our campus reach the 70% vaccination rate,” said Sandi Scott, �� dean of students. “It ��. exciting to know that the scholarship dollars were awarded to randomly selected students who helped us hit the mark!”

In addition to the System scholarships, the university is providing another seven scholarships for the same amount through the Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund — HEERF III — federal grant. Those winners also have been randomly chosen but still are in the process of being verified.

UW System President Tommy Thompson set a goal for 12 universities to reach a 70% student vaccination rate. All but one reached the goal, while UW-Madison ran its own campaign.

�� students reached the goal on Sept. 29, well ahead of the Oct. 31 System deadline.

“We took up a challenge to educate and inform students as a part of a vaccination campaign to help keep our universities safe – and it has succeeded,” Thompson said. “What a thrill it is to be able to tell students they have won a $7,000 scholarship. I am so proud of our students, faculty, staff and administrators who helped make this happen.”

Other student winners

Vaccinated students at �� also were eligible for daily prizes during the fall campaign. More than 60 of them won items including gift cards for local businesses and campus outlets, gift baskets and group private boxes for Blue Devil football and basketball games.

Another prize was a photo shoot with the campus mascot, Blaze. The winner was Kylie Anderson, of Somerset, who is graduating in December with a master ��. degree in school counseling. She also earned her bachelor ��. from ��.

For the photo shoot, Anderson included three of her best college friends. “It was a super fun experience for us to have together before I graduate in December. It's something that I can cherish forever, especially because Stout is so important to me as an alumni,” Anderson said.

She interned this fall at two public schools, one of the reasons she was vaccinated.

“I knew getting vaccinated would be important to help keep safe those students I was working with daily,” she said.

“I care greatly for the Stout and Menomonie communities. Between my bachelor's degree and my master's degree, I've been a student at Stout for five and a half years, so I have great care and love for campus and the people who make it great. Keeping them and myself safe was super important.”

Event draws crowd outside student center to mark progress against pandemic

A special visitor helped make Monday, Oct. 11, a day to remember in University of Wisconsin-Stout ��. fight against COVID-19.

On a mild fall afternoon, students celebrated their 70% vaccination rate with free ice cream during a rally led by UW System President Tommy Thompson outside the Memorial Student Center.

“Thank you to all of you,” said Thompson, the former state governor who flew in from Madison for the day. “I’m dedicated to keeping these campuses stay open and making sure that we would be as safe as possible. I know how important education is. I know how important these schools are.”

Thompson praised students for reaching the 70% goal on Sept. 29 as part of the UW System ��. 70 for 70 campaign, but he encouraged them to keep going. The vaccination effort is a major reason why the System has largely returned to normal operations with 75% of classes in person this semester, he said.

“Get vaccinated, stay healthy and enjoy Stout. It ��. the finest polytechnic school, in my opinion, in the country,” he said.

Another vaccination clinic will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, on campus.

Chancellor Katherine Frank, who introduced Thompson and also spent much of the day with him and UW System officials on campus, announced that the student vaccination rate is up to 75% and the faculty and staff rate is 90%, well ahead of the Dunn County rate of 45%.

“Stout is doing great and is helping serve as a model for other universities and the community. We couldn’t be prouder,” Frank said.

Student Taylor Mancl, a sophomore from Wisconsin Rapids majoring in early childhood education, and her friends enjoyed some ice cream and the partylike atmosphere, which included free �� T-shirts.

“It ��. exciting to see things coming back to normal and a chance to celebrate our accomplishment,” said Mancl, who is vaccinated. “The next step is no masks — that would be great.”

Masks are required indoors this fall at ��.

Eli Lemery, a senior from Galena, Ill., majoring in retail merchandising and management, said he feels safer this semester knowing that most students and employees are vaccinated.

“It means a lot to know people are vaccinated and are being respectful and wearing masks. Last semester it seemed like you didn’t know. I was in a house with eight guys. Everyone got COVID but two of us; I didn’t. I got vaccinated in March,” Lemery said.

Vaccinated students will be entered into a drawing later this fall to win one of several $7,000 UW System scholarships. �� will award an additional seven, $7,000 scholarships to fully vaccinated students through a separate drawing.

A day at ��

Thompson spent most of the day on campus, meeting with numerous university officials and groups and taking a tour. He also held a working lunch at the student center with City of Menomonie, Dunn County and regional officials.

“This is a fantastic campus, and more people need to know about it,” Thompson said. “Ninety-eight point eight percent of graduates get a job, the highest of any university in the country. We need to tell the story.”

He cited �� . polytechnic designation. “Stout could be a magnet for the country. There ��. nothing like it,” he said, mentioning that he has a sister and nephew who graduated from ��.

He recalled three other personal Menomonie connections: working for a paving company for about a month one summer while he was in college; playing a role, while governor, in Sam Walton ��. decision to build a Walmart distribution center in the city; and also while governor helping break ground for the Stout Technology and Business Park on the city ��. east side.

Thompson stressed that the universities in the UW System need to be good partners within their area to help each other grow. On that point, Menomonie Mayor Randy Knaack commented that residents need to realize how important �� is to the community and vice versa.

“Let ��. grow the city, the area and the university,” Thompson said.

Faculty, staff members to visit about 250 homes Sept. 7

University of Wisconsin-Stout students who live off campus likely will get a friendly knock at their door on Tuesday, Sept. 7, the day before fall semester classes begin.

Faculty and staff members will welcome back students living in the community as part of the university ��. Knock and Talk initiative, which started in 2016. About 20 faculty and staff volunteers are expected to visit 250 homes in several neighborhoods around the campus from noon to 6 p.m. to drop off about 700 welcome back bags.

“We wanted to connect with our off-campus students, welcome them back and encourage them to make safe and healthy choices, particularly about high-risk alcohol usage,” said Nate Kirkman, assistant dean of students who is leading the effort.

The reusable bags will include a variety of things: information on safety, city ordinances, student conduct policies, voting, tenant rights, and local service agencies; coupons and small gifts from local businesses and other entities; COVID-19 information including a thermometer and information on receiving vaccines.

Last year Knock and Talk was moved to Johnson Fieldhouse because of COVID-19 concerns, with students encouraged to visit and pick up their welcome bags.

“We want to bring the message to our off-campus students that the university cares for them, and we want them to be involved in the Stout community,” Kirkman said. “We want Stout students to be positive bystanders and take care of and look out for their fellow Blue Devils.”

Keeping Everyone Informed

The Dean of Students is one of the main points of contact for emergency incidents. Please follow the instructions below for connecting with your student or keeping the university informed of external situations that could impact your student's attendance.

Contacting a Student During a Family Crisis

Sometimes a family member might have difficulty contacting a student in a time of crisis, such as a medical emergency or a death in the family. All emergency inquiries during business hours should be directed to Dean of Students Office via phone at 715-232-1181 or via email. After hours, contact the University Police Department at 715-232-2222.

Student Crises & Absences

In the event of a short-term illness (less than 3 days) it is best for the student to contact their instructor directly. If the student is hospitalized or experiencing a difficulty that will keep them out of school for 3 days or more, please contact the Dean of Students Office via phone 715-232-1181 or via email. If a parent or family member is concerned about their student ��. health or wellness, please contact the Dean of Students Office.

A notification of student absences will be issued by the Dean of Students Office. Documentation is required. This notification does not change attendance policies put in effect by the instructor and is a courtesy memo only, letting the instructor know the whereabouts of the student. Using this process to determine excused absences and/or work assignments is determined by the instructor. It is the responsibility of the student to initiate contact with their instructor regarding any missed work or exams.

The university posts any large-scale campus emergency on our �� Alert Messaging System and website. Students will be notified by text message when there is an immediate threat to the health or safety of students.

Confidential Campus Health & Mental Health Resources

The Student Health Centre is conveniently located on North Campus and offers appointments for preventive and primary care needs as well as laboratory services, tuberculosis testing, and vaccines. Students can be seen for anxiety and depression and a consulting psychiatric provider is available 2 half days per month. Most services are included in the students segregated fees.

Counseling Center is staffed by licensed and trained counselors. It is located in Bowman Hall. Services offered include individual, couple, and group counseling. Alcohol education classes are offered also. There is no charge to students for this service.

�� Hazing Policy

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The University of Wisconsin-Stout is committed to promoting a safe and healthy campus environment, where individuals are free from hazing. The purpose of this policy is to define hazing at �� and establish requirements for hazing education, reporting, and response in accordance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act.

2.0 SCOPE OF POLICY

This Policy applies to all employees, registered student organizations (RSOs), students, student groups, and individuals who volunteer with RSOs and student groups.

3.0 DEFINITIONS

3.1 REGISTERED STUDENT ORGANIZATION (RSO):

A group, composed mainly of, and directed by, students, consisting of at least four students and an advisor, and which has filed all appropriate registration forms with the Involvement Center in the Memorial Student Center and been confirmed by the Involvement Center as meeting the eligibility criteria for registration, and is active and in good standing.

3.2 STUDENT GROUP:

A group of at least two students that is established or recognized by the university, but the group does not meet the definition of a registered student organization. Examples include, but are not limited to, athletic teams and club sports (e.g., varsity sports, intramural sports), military organizations, honor societies, musical or theatrical ensembles, university bands and club sports

4.0 STATEMENT OF POLICY

In compliance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act and Wis. Stat. § 948.51, �� defines hazing as any intentional, knowing, or reckless act against an individual that endangers the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health of that individual for the purposes of initiation or admission into, affiliation with, or the maintenance of membership in any organization or group and that causes or creates a risk of physical or psychological injury, regardless of the individual ��. willingness to participate.

5.0 CRITERIA

5.1 HAZING CAN INCLUDE, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO:

5.1.1 Brutality of a physical nature or the threat of bodily harm such as assault, whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to elements, sleep deprivation, confinement, or any other activity which could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.2 Forced consumption of any alcohol, food, liquid, drug, or other substance that could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.3 Soliciting a person to participate in or be actively involved in the planning of any act meeting the definition of hazing.

5.1.4 Any activity that constitutes the violation of university policies and/or federal, state, or local law (including ordinances of the City of Menomonie), or that causes another person to commit such a violation.

5.1.5 Acts that degrade, humiliate, embarrass, ridicule, or isolate such as requiring servitude, taking away cell phones or other devices, not allowing class attendance, requiring costumes or other apparel unless that apparel is part of a uniform for employment or a university or athletic program, confinement, or any other activity that could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.6 Causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing another person to perform sexual acts.

5.2 REPORTING

5.2.1 Campus security authorities as defined in Institutional Clery Act Compliance are required to report incidents of hazing to the university.

5.2.2 Allegations of hazing may be reported via the University of Wisconsin-Stout Incident Reporting Form

5.3 INVESTIGATION/REFERRAL

5.3.1 The Dean of Students Office is responsible for investigating and adjudicating allegations of hazing.

5.3.2 Individual students will follow student nonacademic disciplinary procedures outlined in Wis. Admin. Code UWS § 17

5.3.3 Registered Student Organizations will follow the disciplinary procedures outlined in Registered Student Organization Code of Conduct

5.3.4 Hazing allegations involving individuals who are not students will be referred to the appropriate office.

5.4 HAZING PREVENTION AND AWARENESS PROGRAMMING

5.4.1 Research-informed hazing prevention and awareness training will be made available to students, staff, and faculty. This training will include information about this policy and other applicable university policies, how to recognize and report hazing, and strategies for intervening when hazing is witnessed or known.

The benefits of a COVID-19 vaccination have been well-publicized: Proven protection against a potentially deadly illness.

Students at University of Wisconsin-Stout this fall will have more reasons to get the vaccine: Scholarships and prizes.

On Sunday, the UW System announced its 70 for 70 student vaccination campaign. At each campus, excluding UW-Madison, once 70% of students are vaccinated, a portion of 70 scholarships will be awarded. The scholarships, $7,000 each, will be given out via campus drawings at the qualifying schools.

�� is going a step further to encourage its incoming and returning students to protect themselves, the campus and regional community. It will award additional scholarships, matching the number it receives from the UW System.

Also, vaccinated students at �� will be eligible throughout the verification period for Blue Devil gear, gifts from local businesses, daily gift cards and more.

Any student who has been fully vaccinated and uploads their information to a secure database by Thursday, Oct. 15, will be eligible.

Students already vaccinated are eligible. Information about how to get the vaccine is available in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois.

“While we’re striving for a minimum of 70% of our student population vaccinated, we know we can do better,” said Chancellor Katherine Frank. “We’re asking every Blue Devil to do their part and get the COVID vaccine to help protect our community and each other. Blue Devils always rise to the occasion.”

In the coming weeks, a �� vaccine incentive webpage will provide the latest information on campus vaccination clinics, daily prize drawings and the grand scholarship prizes.

“As we welcome students back to campus this fall, we want their experience to be as normal and safe as we can make it,” said System President Tommy Thompson. “That means students should get vaccinated, and we will incentivize it knowing that high vaccination rates are critical to our success. The ‘70 for 70’ campaign is key to helping all our comprehensive universities achieve higher vaccination rates, especially in the face of the looming threat the Delta variant poses.”

UW System will not require students to be vaccinated. The 70% threshold was chosen based on estimates about the percentage of the population needed to reach herd immunity, which represents those who are vaccinated or who already had the virus and indicates a minimal level of communitywide protection.

Starting June 1, University of Wisconsin System schools in Eau Claire, Menomonie and River Falls will relax their face covering and physical distancing requirements on campus for people who are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The updates to campus health and safety guidelines at UW-Eau Claire, �� and UW-River Falls reflect recent COVID-19 guidance from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Wisconsin Department of Health Services and local public health agencies.

“Through our actions, UW-Eau Claire and other western Wisconsin universities have shown we care deeply about the health and safety of our students, faculty and staff, but also about the communities where we live and work every day,” says UW-Eau Claire Chancellor James Schmidt. “Our campus communities understood that the only way to combat COVID-19 was together by wearing masks, physical distancing, getting tested and now being vaccinated. We now enthusiastically look forward to the return to a normal campus environment this fall.”

University Dining ��. Fireside Café in student center is among projects

Fireside Café is a popular eating location for students and staff at University of Wisconsin-Stout ��. Memorial Student Center. Yet, a group of students in a Product Photography class realized there were few, if any, pictures of the dining options available at the café or on University Dining ��. website.

The students decided to help resolve that as part of a class project.

“They have very few pictures of the food, which is a good way to show the products,” said Breanna Scherer, of Kenosha, a junior video production major. “There is nothing public on display.”

Scherer and senior video production majors Colin Podborny, Fox River Grove, Ill., and Kyle Burger, Lake Mills, approached University Dining about using Fireside Café as a class project. University Dining gladly helped, providing prepared food, dishes and kitchen utensils to help create the photoshoot.

“We knew we wanted to get a wide range of food, but we knew it needed to be stable to bring it into the studio,” Podborny said, noting there are baked goods, sandwiches, wraps and burgers featured in the product photos. “This is quality, top-notch, homemade food and we wanted to show that. We wanted to get a lot of �� . branding too in the photos. We used a �� lanyard to help with that.”

Director of University Dining Services Justin Krahn said dining is evaluating how to incorporate the photos into its current marketing. “We appreciate being involved in students’ experiences on campus,” Krahn said. “University Dining is here to contribute and enhance the total student experience. We care about having a welcoming atmosphere, good food, good customer service, meaningful work experiences and being a resource for students on campus.”

Working with University Dining replicated working with a real-world client, Podborny said. “You need to have communication skills,” he said. “You’ve got to talk to the client. You’ve got to know what they want.”

University Dining Executive Chef David Leach provided input for the project and said the students did a good job on the photos.

“The students are great to work with when they are working at dining. We are the largest employer of students on campus,” Leach said. “It ��. important for dining to help when we can, not just on projects but other areas of their campus experience too.”

The Product Photography class, taught by senior lecturer Keif Oss, also teaches time management and team skills, Podborny added.

“I think so far Product Photography is the closest to a real-world application I have had,” Podborny said. “I think you could easily take everything you have learned in class and use it outside of class.”

Students learned food styling from Kat Lillvis, a 2015 alumna with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design and interactive media with a concentration in interaction design, who is a food stylist and photographer.

“This is different from any photography I have done before,” Scherer said, noting students use close-up shots and shoot straight down at products.

Another guest lecturer this semester was Martin Nilsen, a 2015 alumnus in multimedia design who is photo and video services manager for Curt Manufacturing in Eau Claire. Nilsen helped guide students on the importance of shooting hard product lines, such as trailer hitches that Curt manufactures.

Josh Stream, a junior video production major from Hudson, worked on a team that created product shots for C&J ��. Candy Store and Scoop Shoppe in downtown Menomonie. Other team members included Natalie Watters, of St. Paul, and Hannah Bautch, of Minneapolis.

“We were trying to think what something fun to do. We thought candy store,” Stream said. “Candy is colorful and there are endless art things we could do. The story also has an international section. We just thought it would be an opportunity to be creative.”

The students took photos of Clark ��. Teaberry gum, which has a mint-like flavor like eastern teaberry. They used other red-colored candy such as licorice around the teaberry gum to help highlight the color of the gum ��. package.

For Stream one of the best parts of the class is to work in a team with multiple people who have strengths. “It was fun to work toward a common goal and to work with a client,” Stream said. “I just like the variety of this class that we get to learn so many things.”

Oss said when there are clients students are more engaged because their work is being seen by a larger audience. “It takes a project from something they have to do for a class to something they want to do,” Oss said. “They want to please these people. They have to sell a vision. They have to communicate what they are doing to the client.”

Another goal is to make sure students have quality photography to include in their portfolios when they graduate, Oss said.

The Product Photography class was held in person with students social distancing this semester. Students signed up for studio time and checked out equipment that had been cleaned to prevent any potential spread of COVID-19, Oss said.

In a recent studio session, Jasmine Frederick, a junior graphic design and interactive media student, helped set up a food product shot of yogurt with granola for a video. “I like the challenge of this class,” Frederick said. “This helps open my eyes to how instrumental graphic design is to video production. Lighting is such a key factor. It has to be perfect to shoot.”

Frederick picked up granola and tossed it toward the yogurt, trying to get a video of the two coming together in a bowl. “Oh gosh, the accuracy,” she said laughing.

Keif has an M.S. in Career and Technical Education and an MFA in Digital Filmmaking. He is an Assistant Professor of video production and serving as Program Director for the B.S. Video Production degree. Keif teaches a variety of courses in video production and photography with both narrative and commercial aspects.

Keif has worked on a range of professional and commercial video projects as a senior video producer and owner/independent contractor of A Creative Advocate, LLC. His work includes television/web advertising, documentary, motion graphics and a variety of marketing-oriented materials. Keif ��. expertise and creative contributions include work for 100+ clients including Mayo Clinic, Seventh Generation, State Farm Insurance, Royal Credit Union and others.

Community Vaccination Clinic with Mayo, Dunn County Public Health to be held May 13 on campuspolingj May 6, 2021

Up to about 1,000 people can receive Pfizer or Johnson & Johnson vaccine

Three Dunn County institutions are partnering to offer a free Community Vaccination Clinic at University of Wisconsin-Stout.

��, Mayo Clinic Health System and Dunn County Public Health will hold the clinic from 1 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 13, in the Multipurpose Room at the university ��. Sports and Fitness Center, 220 13th Ave. E.

The center is part of the athletics complex on the south end of campus.

Parking will be available in lots 4 and 29 near the building. Refer to the campus map for directions. Signs will direct visitors to the Sports and Fitness Center.

Participants will have a choice of vaccines, the one-dose Johnson & Johnson Janssen or the first dose of the Pfizer vaccine. Those who choose Pfizer should plan to receive the second dose at the same location on Thursday, June 3.

Officials estimate that the vaccination process, including wait time after the shot, will take 30 minutes per person. Masks are required.

Advance registration through Dunn County is requested but not required to receive the vaccine. Walk-ins will be accepted.

Supplies will be available to vaccinate up to 1,000 people. The shots will be administered by health personnel from Mayo and ��.

Residents of Dunn County who have not been vaccinated are encouraged to attend, but the clinic is open to everyone, including �� students.

The vaccination is free. No insurance card is needed.

The J&J Janssen COVID-19 vaccine is available for individuals 17 and older. The Pfizer vaccine is available to individuals 16 and older. Anyone 16 or 17 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and must be available in three weeks to receive the second Pfizer dose.

According to the state Department of Health Services, as of April 30 a total of 34.4% of Dunn County residents had been vaccinated, well below the state average of 43.1%.

Those who are vaccinated will receive a vaccination card.

Impact of highly effective shots touted by county health director, �� physician, dean of students

A powerful weapon, hopefully the knockout punch, has arrived in the yearlong battle against COVID-19: vaccines.

Now, it ��. up to individuals to do their part and get vaccinated when the opportunity arises, said two health care professionals and a University of Wisconsin-Stout administrator during a recent online panel discussion, titled Calling All the Shots.

“The benefits of receiving the vaccine are potentially enormous. One of the exciting things is how beautifully effective they are. It ��. jaw-dropping,” said Dr. Alex Hall, a biology instructor and �� staff physician.

The Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are more than 90% effective at preventing illness from COVID after two shots, and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is 72% effective with one shot. Hall compared those rates to the effectiveness of flu shots, typically 50%.

“In the trials (for the vaccines), there were zero hospitalizations and zero deaths, so they’re 100% effective against the things we’re most worried about,” Hall said.

Hall, along with Dunn County Health Department Director KT Gallagher and �� Dean of Students Sandi Scott, answered questions from students and staff during the discussion.

One of the event ��. goals was to allay fears about getting the vaccine and address any misconceptions.

Gallagher said each of the vaccines can be trusted. They had large test populations, ranging from 28,000 to 40,000 people. Vaccines typically are produced after testing, but COVID vaccine production took place during testing because of the emergency situation. They were ready to go when data showed they were safe and effective.

When enough people are vaccinated or have been infected, 75% to 80%, the immediate threat of the virus should begin to disappear, ending the pandemic and allowing people to gather again and mostly resume normal activities. Those who have recovered from the disease also are encouraged to get the vaccine because immunity wears off faster after infection than with inoculation.

“This is our off ramp. We get back to normal-ish with herd or community immunity,” Gallagher said.

Students encouraged to get the shot

Scott encouraged students to get vaccinated. The shot could be available to them as part of the general population as early as May 1. The spring semester at ��, with about 50% in-person classes, ends in mid-May.

In the fall, �� hopes to return to in-person classes and campus activities, meaning that vaccination progress in all populations over the spring and summer is critical.

“The more students get vaccinated, the greater the likelihood that we’ll go back to what feels more normal. It depends on folks understanding how important vaccination is to reaching that goal,” Scott said.

“I know how much Stout students have risen to the occasion, and we ask you to do it one more time so we can get back to the Stout we know and love,” Scott said.

Vaccination is underway for student employees, faculty and staff, although it isn’t required.

�� has been testing students and all employees regularly for the virus and will continue to do so this spring even among those who have been vaccinated, per government recommendations because it ��. not yet known for certain if they can be carriers, Scott said.

Hall noted that while traditional students at ��, because of their age, are at lower risk for severe illness from COVID they should get the vaccine to boost their protection and to protect those around them, such as their professors, family and community members.

“If we decrease transmission in the community, the virus has fewer opportunities to mutate and develop new variants,” Hall said. “So, by getting as many people vaccinated as possible we also help ensure the long-term effectiveness of the vaccines we have.”

The side-effects of being vaccinated, Hall and Gallagher said, typically are much less severe than a potential infection even in young people. The health impacts are minor and short-term, such as a sore arm, headache and body aches. Severe reactions have been just five per every million, or one in 200,000.

The risk of not being vaccinated and getting infected can be much greater. Even healthy people can continue to experience headaches, brain fog and shortness of breath after they stop being able to spread the germ. “We had a young mom who was infected and couldn’t stand up and do dishes 14 days after onset,” Gallagher said.

Because it ��. a new virus, researchers don’t know how long vaccines will be effective against COVID-19 and its variants, but it could be up to one year and possibly longer.

The supply of vaccine is expected to continue to grow in Wisconsin and around the U.S. “Getting those doses into arms will really help slow the spread,” Gallagher said.

“It ��. really exciting that we can prevent illness and death,” Hall said.

University Archives plans one-year look at COVID-19 with March 17 event

In 2020 as University of Wisconsin-Stout prepared for spring break, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus outbreak a pandemic.

In response, �� classes switched to alternative learning methods and �� faculty and staff pivoted to a world that would be forever changed.

At the University Archives, in late May student interviewers started using Microsoft Teams to collect oral histories for the COVID-19 Oral History Project to find out how students, faculty and staff coped with a rapidly changing world. The goal was to collect stories while memories were fresh for future generations to hear.

Dozens of faculty, staff, students and community members were interviewed for the project.
“We really tried to represent a variety of voices and experiences,” Stecklein said. “Library student workers transcribed the stories so they can be searched by keywords. The interviews are really a moment in time. There were so many people wishing for a vaccine and to see family members again. Those wishes are starting to come true.”

The idea to collect the oral histories started when Stecklein realized how few personal stories had been saved from the 1918 flu pandemic.

Looking back a year, the changes �� underwent have created a positive influence through the use of changing technology that creates more accessibility and shows resiliency in faculty, staff, students and the community, Stecklein said.

On Wednesday, March 17, from noon to 1 p.m. the same day that many campus buildings had limited access to slow the spread of the coronavirus, University Archives will hold a listening session of many of the recordings made last year for the oral history project and take time to allow participants to share their thoughts and stories from the past year. Register here for the Microsoft Teams virtual event.

The stories are available publicly at Minds@UW, a website that stores, indexes, distributes and preserves the digital materials of University of Wisconsin. The interviews will be searchable by keywords.

The past year has been one of innovation, Stecklein said. “The idea of doing remote interviews with people on Teams and having software to transcribe the interviews into an MP4 was something we had never done,” she noted. “It was something we hadn’t even thought of as a way to save oral histories a year ago.”

The archives also moved toward more digitization of historical documents because the pandemic-related shift toward distance and hybrid learning made remote access a necessity for many students. Most campus directories, athletic programs and commencement programs are now accessible on the internet for people to use in their research. “We are trying to make more items available and keyword searchable from anywhere,” Stecklein said. “We are now worldwide accessible.”

Having multiple oral histories gives more depth and insight, he noted.

Witucki said the pandemic taught the Involvement Center staff how to engage students virtually. Student organizations also had to learn how to meet while apart.

Hybrid events will continue, Witucki said, noting there will be some people meeting in -person at events and others attending virtually. “It makes it more accessible for everyone,” he noted.

From a student and local government standpoint, it allows more people to attend meetings who may not have the ability to otherwise. Those with hearing loss can use instant closed captioning in meetings or events, he noted.

He expects performers or speakers coming to campus will continue to offer their events both virtually and in person because they have recognized the benefit of more people able to attend and being accessible to more students, Witucki said.

The Memorial Student Center closed on March 24, 2020, to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It was closed for 131 days, Witucki said. “It was painful,” Witucki said. “It was the antithesis to what we are. We usually open our doors wider in times of crisis like 9/11.”

Witucki said the Involvement Center staff has been amazing coming up with virtual or hybrid events. Last semester there were 152 programs held. Maker ��. Nights became popular because students could choose to attend in person or pick up the craft items and follow along virtually, he noted. Bingo nights were also popular as students could attend or choose to play along virtually.

“On the program side we’ve changed and stretched ourselves,” Witucki said. “The success we’ve seen and the diversity in programming, we’re going to take that into the future.”

With the support of Dunn County Public Health, �� employees are now able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through the Mayo Clinic Health System. And through a partnership with the Medicine Shoppe, a local pharmacy, 255 university employees received the first dose of the vaccine at an on-site pop-up clinic on March 9.

On March 1, employees in an educational setting became eligible to receive vaccinations as part of Phase 1B in the COVID-19 Vaccine Plan in Wisconsin. With Public Health focusing on K-12 educators, Mayo Clinic and the Medicine Shoppe reached out to �� administrators to offer their assistance and support in vaccinating employees.

Sara Carstens, director of Community Engagement and Wellness for Mayo Clinic, worked with the campus to arrange for the vaccinations at Mayo. Dean of Students Sandi Scott worked with the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy Manager Chad Rindy to coordinate the clinic, held in the Memorial Student Center ballrooms.

Employees who received vaccinations included those from facilities, housing, dining, student centers, child center and athletics.

Nine Medicine Shoppe employees were on site: three support staff, including Rindy; and three nurses, one pharmacy intern and two vaccine certified technicians administering vaccines.

Associate Director of Facilities Management Zenon Smolarek and Kirk Miller, facilities repair worker advanced, received their first inoculation. They work in all buildings across campus, including residence halls, classrooms, labs and offices, and support campus facilities wherever they’re needed.

“I think this is a privilege to have this opportunity as an essential worker. Since I work truly everywhere on campus, I want to be safe and I want to keep our students safe,” Smolarek said.

“Whatever I can do to help us get back to normal, to keep our campus and my family safe and help slow the spread,” Miller added.

The Medicine Shoppe has vaccinated about 10,000 people at its locations and at its long-term care pharmacy in Chippewa Falls.

“Collaborations with our community institutions like �� are invaluable,” Rindy said. “These site visits are a more efficient process to get larger numbers of patients vaccinated, help keep our communities safe and help guide our path out of the pandemic.”

Scott is grateful for the partnership as it works together to ensure the Menomonie community is vaccinated as soon as possible.

“I’m uncertain if other UW schools have had this same opportunity for an on-site clinic with a local pharmacy to expeditiously vaccinate 255 people in two hours. We feel incredibly fortunate that the Medicine Shoppe reached out to us and for this community partnership,” Scott said.

A second clinic will be held on April 6 for employees to receive their second dose.

Vaccines available to all �� employees through Mayo

Effective March 5, all �� faculty and staff are eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine through the Mayo Clinic Health System. The vaccine is paid for by the federal government, and the administrative cost is billed to the patient ��. insurance. There is no cost to an individual who receives the vaccine.

“Mayo Clinic Health System is proud to serve eligible �� employees with the COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccine is a vital tool to bring us closer to the end of this pandemic,” said Dr. Paul Horvath, physician site lead at ‎Mayo Clinic Red Cedar in Menomonie.

“Mayo Clinic recommends the use of the currently approved vaccines. The safety of those vaccines has been demonstrated in the completed trials and continues to be monitored by the Centers For Disease Control,” he said.

University employees must complete an intake form and will need a Mayo Clinic medical record number. Current patients can find their MRN in Patient Online Services or by looking for a 7- to 9-digit number near the top of many Mayo Clinic documents. Employees who do not receive care at Mayo Clinic may call 715-464-2683 to set up an MRN.

Employees are encouraged to create a Patient Online Services account to schedule appointments online. To create an account, visit Patient Online Services and select “Create your account.” An MRN is needed to set up an account.

Once the intake form is completed, employees will receive an email from Patient Online Services to schedule their vaccination appointment. Employees need to bring their insurance card when receiving the vaccine.

“Demand for the vaccine has been tremendous in Western Wisconsin, and as supply increases in the coming weeks, Mayo Clinic is committed to offering this important protection to more people across the �� campus and the greater Menomonie community,” Horvath said.

“We are grateful to our local public health department for their support of the Mayo Clinic Health System providing Stout employees with this opportunity. Thank you to Mayo Clinic Health System for serving as our partner in providing our employees with the opportunity to help reduce the spread of COVID-19,” Scott said.

Student thankful for UW System Vax Up! ‘70 for 70’ scholarship — and for the vaccine

1.0 INTRODUCTION

2.0 SCOPE OF POLICY

This Policy applies to all employees, registered student organizations (RSOs), students, student groups, and individuals who volunteer with RSOs and student groups.

3.0 DEFINITIONS

3.1 REGISTERED STUDENT ORGANIZATION (RSO):

4.0 STATEMENT OF POLICY

5.0 CRITERIA

5.1 HAZING CAN INCLUDE, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO:

5.1.2 Forced consumption of any alcohol, food, liquid, drug, or other substance that could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.3 Soliciting a person to participate in or be actively involved in the planning of any act meeting the definition of hazing.

5.1.6 Causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing another person to perform sexual acts.

5.2 REPORTING

5.2.1 Campus security authorities as defined in Institutional Clery Act Compliance are required to report incidents of hazing to the university.

5.2.2 Allegations of hazing may be reported via the University of Wisconsin-Stout Incident Reporting Form

5.3 INVESTIGATION/REFERRAL

5.3.1 The Dean of Students Office is responsible for investigating and adjudicating allegations of hazing.

5.3.2 Individual students will follow student nonacademic disciplinary procedures outlined in Wis. Admin. Code UWS § 17

5.3.3 Registered Student Organizations will follow the disciplinary procedures outlined in Registered Student Organization Code of Conduct

5.3.4 Hazing allegations involving individuals who are not students will be referred to the appropriate office.

5.4 HAZING PREVENTION AND AWARENESS PROGRAMMING
