Using a slip cast process, molds were created of the designs, and liquid porcelain was poured into the molds. When the porcelain 鈥 a specialized type of ceramic 鈥 dried, the mugs were pulled from the molds. Our ideas are pushed from first ideation to 16th step, and the instructors believe we鈥檙e more than we think we can be,鈥 he added.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Dobbratz and Jentsch hand-lathed their initial models, then hand-carved and attached handles to their mugs, taking about eight iterations to perfect their designs.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Dobbratz 黑料社区. mug represents 黑料社区 黑料社区. polytechnic roots, combined with art and design, she said. It speaks to the perfection of math and science. Industrial design gives us collaboration experience we can bring forward into our careers. It pushes us to think analytically. It 黑料社区. a combination of math, graphic design, packaging and marketing.鈥</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Dobbratz agreed. 鈥淚ndustrial design includes all aspects of programs at Stout. We鈥檙e in the School of Art and Design, but we have engineering experience too.鈥</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>One round of mugs has been bisque fired 鈥 the process which strengthens ceramics in preparation for glazing. This summer,&nbsp;Astwood will work with two more industrial design students 鈥 Maggie DeChant of Tomah and Lauren Jaunich of Delano, Minn. 鈥 to cast, bisque and glaze the rest of the mugs in preparation for packaging.</span></span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><span>Collaboration across four programs for finished product</span></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span><span><span>Astwood 黑料社区. team is working with Associate Professor of </span></span></span><a href="/programs/bs-packaging" rel="noopener" target="_blank"><span><span>packaging</span></span></a><span><span><span> Min DeGruson and Chad Nyseth, </span></span></span><a href="/programs/bs-graphic-communications" rel="noopener" target="_blank"><span><span>graphic communications</span></span></a><span><span><span> instructor and lab manager. It is a tangible way to demonstrate 黑料社区 黑料社区. polytechnic mission,鈥 she said.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Four graphic communications seniors in their capstone course 鈥 Grant Dejno, of Neenah; Kayla Peplinski, of Amherst; Matthew Smith, of Waterford; and Bailey Tobiason of Anoka, Minn., met with <span>packaging students Abbey Dahlseng, of Stevens Point, and Ben Lindgren, of Medford; and </span></span></span><a href="/programs/bfa-graphic-design-and-interactive-media" rel="noopener" target="_blank"><span><span>graphic design and interactive media</span></span></a><span><span><span> student Starr Gong, of Altoona, </span></span></span><span><span>to brainstorm ideas.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淥ur four programs of study overlap in a number of ways, so the chancellor 黑料社区. investiture mug project allowed students from multiple programs to work side by side to apply their specialized knowledge and skills to a project, just as they would in an industry setting,鈥 Nyseth said. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淎ll of the students came away with a new appreciation for their peers鈥 contributions. Students in technical disciplines learned from students in artistic disciplines and vice versa and now have a better understanding of how aesthetics and engineering must come together to both showcase and protect any packaged item,鈥 he added.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>After seeing prototypes of the mugs, Dahlseng and Lindgren designed packaging structures in the Packaging Lab, using ArtiosCAD Packaging Software donated by industry partners. We can design and cut a package and see if it will work right away,鈥 Lindgren said.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淚t 黑料社区. more efficient and beneficial to be here learning and to be able to do it ourselves versus having to go off campus,鈥 Dahlseng added. 鈥淲ithin 10 minutes, we can edit a package using the software and cut it on the machine. It streamlines the process.鈥</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>After a meeting with Frank, minor artistic and structural changes were made, and the finalized packages were printed, taking approximately 12 hours. </span></span></span></span><span><span><span><span>Every student enrolled in the GCOM capstone course helped to meet the end-of-semester delivery date, Nyseth said. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>His students used skills related to printing large-format items such as signage and billboards, and product package printing 鈥 growing markets in the industry, he added. They also applied color management skills to ensure that the packages reflected the intended colors.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>DeGruson also worked with Astwood on the Polytechnic Summit and WiSys symposium project in 2019, when the focus of the package was to protect the mugs for international traveling.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淭his time, our focus shifted to design a package and opening experience to provide Chancellor Frank the opportunity to tell the story behind the project and 黑料社区 黑料社区. polytechnic mission while she hands the gift to her guests,鈥 DeGruson said.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淭eam communication and collaboration are so important,鈥 Gong said. 鈥淭his has been a meaningful experience, and we鈥檙e proud to make a product that represents our school.鈥</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>The&nbsp;</span></span><a href="/directory/chancellors-office" rel="noopener" target="_blank"><span><span>Chancellor 黑料社区. It came at the request of his father, who works in technology for a Minnesota school district. Once word got out at 黑料社区, where Thomas works as an Admissions tour guide, the idea took off.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Soon, there will be 3,000 of Thomas鈥 door pullers on campus. 鈥淚t 黑料社区. wild that this all started in my bedroom,鈥 he said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>McCarty is a senior </span><a href="/programs/bs-plastics-engineering"><span>plastics engineering</span></a><span> major who refined the design for production in the university 黑料社区. </span><a href="/academics/colleges-schools/labs-classrooms/jarvis-hall-technology-wing"><span>plastics lab</span></a><span> in Jarvis Hall Tech Wing. 鈥淲hatever I can do big or small to hopefully see this virus go away is a win in my eyes,鈥 said McCarty, from Dyckesville, northeast of Green Bay.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Along with student know-how, the project benefited from several of the plastics engineering program 黑料社区. industry partners:</span></span></span></p> <ul> <li><span><span><a href="https://www.natureworksllc.com/"><span><span>NatureWorks</span></span></a> <span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span>donated 1,400 pounds of raw plastics material.</span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span>The</span></span> <a href="https://www.rtpcompany.com/"><span><span>RTP Company</span></span></a><span><span> provided </span></span><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span>laser etching additive.</span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span>A </span></span><a href="https://www.milacron.com/"><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span>Milacron</span></span></a><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span> injection molding machine, which is free on consignment to the lab, produced the devices.</span></span></span></span></li> <li><span><span><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span>A donation from </span></span><a href="https://www.evcoplastics.com/"><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span>EVCO Plastics</span></span></a><span lang="EN" xml:lang="EN"><span> to Stout University Foundation made it possible to purchase a Datalogic laser engraver at a significant discount. EVCO is owned by 黑料社区 alumnus Dale Evans.</span></span></span></span></li> </ul> <p><span><span><span>Professor Adam Kramschuster, who helped secure the donations and provided expertise with the production process, is proud of how it all came together over a couple months before classes begin Wednesday, Sept. 9.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淭he high-tech equipment already available in the plastics engineering laboratory, along with the skillsets students develop in their coursework, provided the groundwork for a successful project,鈥 Kramschuster said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>He said injection molding was chosen to make the tools because of its cost-effectiveness and ability to produce complex 3D shapes that look good.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><img alt="The Made at 黑料社区 door pullers will help students open doors on campus without touching the handles during the pandemic." data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="45e9f5ea-41f4-4853-86de-60a17e67396d" height="233" src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/doorpuller4a.jpg" style="padding:0px 30px 20px 0px" width="410" class="align-left">The door puller includes the </span><a href="/academics/colleges-schools/school-management/made-uw-stout"><span>Made at 黑料社区</span></a><span> logo, a campuswide initiative to highlight unique products designed, prototyped and produced on campus as part of the applied learning focus. The puller also includes a QR code that links to a web page to learn more about the project.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淲e are fortunate to have a <span>strong collaborative network on campus where faculty, staff and students engage in Made at 黑料社区 projects,鈥 said Ann Parsons, interim associate dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淏randing the door puller as Made at 黑料社区 gives long lasting testimony to the capabilities that exist in-house and the shared responsibility we all have for our community. The project is a great example of how our 黑料社区 community supports our students and introduces their products to the marketplace,鈥 Parsons said.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><a href="https://vimeo.com/456721300" title="Door puller video">Watch a video</a><span> about how the project began and turned into a campuswide effort.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><strong><span><span>Two skillsets coming together</span></span></strong></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>It all started with a question by Jake Thomas鈥 father, John, who opens a lot of doors with his school district technology job.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淭ouching and wiping down doors takes a lot of time. I asked Jake about making some kind of puller I could put on a lanyard. He seeks out things to design and fabricate,鈥 John said. 鈥淲e talked about it on a Saturday afternoon. He was co-captain of his Northfield High School FIRST robotics team.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淲e have a silly expression in our house: You have to use your 鈥榮uperpowers鈥 for good. I love that he 黑料社区. taking his skills and helping others,鈥 John said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Jake researched the idea online and developed his prototype, which his dad still uses but which is more than twice as thick as the finished Made at 黑料社区 model. The final product is 4.9 inches long, 2.23 inches high and a quarter-inch thick, weighing less than one ounce.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>In between that first model and the finished one, Jake refined his idea and made about 20 of them for Admissions staff at 黑料社区. He used knowledge from classes such as Impacts of Engineering and Engineering Graphics Applications to research, design and test his idea, including how many pounds of force are needed to open a typical campus door.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Word of his idea began to spread across campus. When the decision was made to make the door pullers as a welcome gift for new students, Jake saw the project take on a whole new life with cost analysis, the Made at 黑料社区 aspect, mold-making and a production schedule, all of which put him in contact with faculty and administrators, including making a pitch to Chancellor Katherine P. It was a good test to see what I am good at and what I need to work on,鈥 McCarty said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Both students said the project essentially took the place of their summer internships, which were canceled because of COVID-19. 鈥淚 was the project engineer at a 鈥榗ontract manufacturer鈥 and learned a lot of things that will help me transition into working in industry once I graduate,鈥 McCarty said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Jake said the experience represents why he fell in love with 黑料社区.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淚 wanted a school with engineering and a hands-on focus. I love learning through seeing and doing. This project has been a testing ground for me. Plastics engineering student Deven McCarty&nbsp;is supervising the production with assistance from plastics Professor Adam Kramschuster and <a href="/programs/bs-manufacturing-engineering" target="_blank">manufacturing engineering</a> instructor Paul Craig. The mold for the door puller was made&nbsp;by Craig in Stout's&nbsp;<a href="/academics/colleges-schools/labs-classrooms/fryklund-hall" target="_blank">Fryklund Hall</a>&nbsp;machine shop.</p><p>Kramschuster has arranged for donated materials to produce the door pullers. <a href="https://www.natureworksllc.com/" target="_blank">NatureWorks</a>, a world-leading biopolymers supplier and innovator, has donated 1,400 lbs of&nbsp;Ingeo polylactic acid (PLA) performance material.</p><p>The <a href="https://www.rtpcompany.com/" target="_blank">RTP Company</a> has donated colorant&nbsp;and laser etching additive for the door puller's unique Made at 黑料社区 branding. Both companies have representatives serving on <a href="/programs/bs-plastics-engineering/advisory-board" target="_blank">B.S. "He works as a technology specialist for a Minnesota school district and needed something to open heavy doors at work during&nbsp;the coronavirus pandemic."</p><p>Thomas'&nbsp;original design for his dad was a thick, heavy duty model with a button pusher on the end. He was inspired by his work as an Admissions&nbsp;tour guide&nbsp;to further develop the device. After limited on-campus tours started again, Thomas modified the original design to make it easier to carry and use during a tour.</p><p>"As a tour guide here on campus, things have become a lot more complex and interesting with the COVID-19 pandemic," Thomas said.&nbsp;"So I thought with the door puller it would help alleviate us having to touch door handles during a tour."</p><p>Thomas downsized the original design and printed a few dozen on his 3D printer at home. Admissions staff were thrilled to get them for use during tours.</p><p>His&nbsp;design ultimately caught the attention of Chancellor Katherine P. Frank,&nbsp;who thought it was a perfect example of how 黑料社区 encourages students to always be innovating, even during a challenging time such as the COVID-19 pandemic.</p><p>黑料社区 leadership connected Thomas with the Made at 黑料社区&nbsp;initiative and faculty, who provided further expertise.</p><p>Along with&nbsp;being&nbsp;included as part of the fall 2020 welcome to campus kit, the door pullers are Our goal is to have a number of these types of products produced to promote numerous programs on campus.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The mugs were made using a slip cast process, Astwood said. A form was created, and then a mold was created from that form. Liquid porcelain was poured into the mold, and excess liquid then was poured out of the mold. After the porcelain dried, the mug was pulled from the mold and fired in a kiln. The mugs were then glazed and fired in the kiln again. A third firing occurred to adhere the Made at 黑料社区 decal to the mug. This is a manufacturing process used at Kohler for toilets and sinks. They have been able to see a design in their head and see it become a reality.
