Over the next several months, a team of �� faculty and students will be working in an unfamiliar lab space to create gifts that will be handed out at a special event this fall.

Astwood is joined by sophomores Amelia Dobbratz, of Fond du Lac; and Jordan Jentsch, of West Bend; as well as Leo Lickfold, of Shakopee, Minn., who graduated in May.

Each student presented the chancellor with two mug prototypes, with the idea that one from each would be produced. However, Frank decided they should execute both of Lickfold ��. designs, so four mugs will be presented at the investiture.

Astwood ��. team is collaborating with graphics and packaging faculty and students to design and produce packaging for the mugs.

“Collaboration, team-based learning, innovation and problem-solving are reflected in this project,” Frank said.

“Faculty and students from a variety of disciplines have worked together to make this project successful. I have watched our faculty use this project as a learning experience for their students and apply guidance in such a way that empowers student learning and leads to success.

“And, as occurs on a regular basis at ��, I have been amazed by students’ ideas, professionalism and final products,” she added. “This project has allowed me to observe how the ‘magic’ happens at �� both in and out of the classroom and why our students are in such high demand by employers even before they leave our university.”

Applied learning in large-scale production

Astwood and the students began to create the mugs in early April. Using a slip cast process, molds were created of the designs, and liquid porcelain was poured into the molds. When the porcelain – a specialized type of ceramic – dried, the mugs were pulled from the molds. Later, they will be fired in a kiln and glazed with versions of �� blue and white gloss, with the Made at �� logo and designers’ identifications.

Usually, industrial design projects are completed in the School of Art and Design ��. labs in the Applied Arts Building.

However, for this project, the team headed across campus to the Harvey Hall Theatre scene shop, working backstage in a far different setting, among stacks of plywood and small workbenches, as they needed a dedicated space.

The Industrial Design Lab and Ceramics Studio were in use, and as no theater productions were scheduled, the scene shop fit their needs.

This is the second time Astwood has led a large-scale porcelain pour for a university event. In 2019, she and five industrial design students created about 450 mugs for industry and education partners at the Polytechnic Summit and a WiSys symposium held on campus.

University of Wisconsin-Stout is known for its hands-on learning, so giving two groups of conference attendees a homemade gift seemed like a natural fit.

The designs for the investiture will be more consistent than previously, through a controlled and designed venture, Astwood explained.

“The students’ designs are more complicated this round. And with an executed vision approved by the chancellor, it is awesome in letting the students project their own vision and strengths in the process,” she said.

Dobbratz, Jentsch and Lickfold designed mugs with different themes based on their interests and �� . mission.

“Their designs tell the story of the university,” Astwood said.

Lickfold wanted his designs to have a minimalistic look and comfortable fit – one features a sturdy handle and the other is asymmetrical for easy gripping. He spent two hours designing his models on the computer and then built them with a 3D printer, which took 17 to 18 hours to print.

“In industrial design, I get to ask, ‘Why is it this way – why can’t it be something else?’ I wanted to challenge the form of what a mug could be and let the form tell the story,” Lickfold said.

“Stout has a different way of teaching in its polytechnic model. Our ideas are pushed from first ideation to 16th step, and the instructors believe we’re more than we think we can be,” he added.

Dobbratz and Jentsch hand-lathed their initial models, then hand-carved and attached handles to their mugs, taking about eight iterations to perfect their designs.

Dobbratz ��. mug represents �� . polytechnic roots, combined with art and design, she said. With an impression of a flame curling around the mug, representing the three tenets of collaboration, career focus and applied learning, it also represents Blue Devil athletics.

Jentsch ��. mug has a travel-cup style and ergonomic handle made to fit in any cup holder and an industrial-looking form, as she wanted it to appeal to industrial engineers.

“STEM is a big component of the university,” she said.

“My mug ��. form is symmetrical, basic and geometric. It speaks to the perfection of math and science. Industrial design gives us collaboration experience we can bring forward into our careers. It pushes us to think analytically. It ��. a combination of math, graphic design, packaging and marketing.”

Dobbratz agreed. “Industrial design includes all aspects of programs at Stout. We’re in the School of Art and Design, but we have engineering experience too.”

One round of mugs has been bisque fired – the process which strengthens ceramics in preparation for glazing. This summer, Astwood will work with two more industrial design students – Maggie DeChant of Tomah and Lauren Jaunich of Delano, Minn. – to cast, bisque and glaze the rest of the mugs in preparation for packaging.

Astwood ��. team is working with Associate Professor of packaging Min DeGruson and Chad Nyseth, graphic communications instructor and lab manager. They supervised seven students who developed three packages to adequately protect the mugs and designed graphics to showcase the products.

Head of Staff Kristi Krimpelbein, who is helping to coordinate the investiture events, believes the collaborative approach allows students and faculty to work across disciplines to create a finished product.

“The project provides students an applied learning opportunity to work through all phases of the process. It is a tangible way to demonstrate �� . polytechnic mission,” she said.

Four graphic communications seniors in their capstone course – Grant Dejno, of Neenah; Kayla Peplinski, of Amherst; Matthew Smith, of Waterford; and Bailey Tobiason of Anoka, Minn., met with packaging students Abbey Dahlseng, of Stevens Point, and Ben Lindgren, of Medford; and graphic design and interactive media student Starr Gong, of Altoona, to brainstorm ideas.

“Our four programs of study overlap in a number of ways, so the chancellor ��. investiture mug project allowed students from multiple programs to work side by side to apply their specialized knowledge and skills to a project, just as they would in an industry setting,” Nyseth said.

“All of the students came away with a new appreciation for their peers’ contributions. Students in technical disciplines learned from students in artistic disciplines and vice versa and now have a better understanding of how aesthetics and engineering must come together to both showcase and protect any packaged item,” he added.

After seeing prototypes of the mugs, Dahlseng and Lindgren designed packaging structures in the Packaging Lab, using ArtiosCAD Packaging Software donated by industry partners. Gong designed the graphics, adhering to the university ��. branding guidelines, using the set color palette and typeface, as well as the Made at �� logo.

The team went through at least five packaging and four graphics ideations before deciding on three models.

“I wanted to create something new and different by playing with the existing guidelines while remaining consistent,” Gong said. “The graphics look like Stout.”

She used patterns and gradients to match the feel of Dobbratz ��. and Jentsch ��. mugs and made the logo more prominent on Lickfold ��. packaging graphics, as she enjoys working with typography.

Using the GCOM lab ��. large-format UV inkjet printer, the GCOM students printed several packaging prototypes, which Dahlseng and Lindgren then cut on a Kongsberg digital cutting table in the Packaging Lab and then folded and assembled the packages.

“Being able to work in the Packaging Lab, we’re able to have instant feedback. We can design and cut a package and see if it will work right away,” Lindgren said.

“It ��. more efficient and beneficial to be here learning and to be able to do it ourselves versus having to go off campus,” Dahlseng added. “Within 10 minutes, we can edit a package using the software and cut it on the machine. It streamlines the process.”

After a meeting with Frank, minor artistic and structural changes were made, and the finalized packages were printed, taking approximately 12 hours. Every student enrolled in the GCOM capstone course helped to meet the end-of-semester delivery date, Nyseth said.

His students used skills related to printing large-format items such as signage and billboards, and product package printing – growing markets in the industry, he added. They also applied color management skills to ensure that the packages reflected the intended colors.

DeGruson also worked with Astwood on the Polytechnic Summit and WiSys symposium project in 2019, when the focus of the package was to protect the mugs for international traveling.

“This time, our focus shifted to design a package and opening experience to provide Chancellor Frank the opportunity to tell the story behind the project and �� . polytechnic mission while she hands the gift to her guests,” DeGruson said.

“Team communication and collaboration are so important,” Gong said. “This has been a meaningful experience, and we’re proud to make a product that represents our school.”

The Chancellor ��. Office is helping to cover the cost of making the mugs, including materials and faculty and student time in the labs.

Two seniors’ engineering skills lead to special welcome gift in residence halls

At �� this fall, dozens of COVID-19 safety measures — from new plexiglass barriers to surface disinfection protocols to socially-distanced classrooms and lounges — have been planned and implemented to help keep everyone healthy.

The university ��. commitment also includes something out of the ordinary, a narrow, molded plastic tool distributed in welcome packs to residence hall students. Simple as it looks, it has a sort of superpower.

The device is a hand-held door puller, designed to hook handles and open doors in classroom buildings, residence halls and more, meaning that students can use it to greatly reduce the number of times each day that they touch commonly used surfaces.

For this small but powerful — even life-saving — piece of engineering, students can largely credit two of their peers, fellow students Jake Thomas and Deven McCarty.

“I’m happy I can make a difference, put my engineering knowledge to use and make students’ lives a little better,” said Thomas, the inventor, a senior engineering technology major from Northfield, Minn.

Thomas made a door puller early this summer at home on a 3D printer. It came at the request of his father, who works in technology for a Minnesota school district. Once word got out at ��, where Thomas works as an Admissions tour guide, the idea took off.

Soon, there will be 3,000 of Thomas’ door pullers on campus. “It ��. wild that this all started in my bedroom,” he said.

McCarty is a senior plastics engineering major who refined the design for production in the university ��. plastics lab in Jarvis Hall Tech Wing. “Whatever I can do big or small to hopefully see this virus go away is a win in my eyes,” said McCarty, from Dyckesville, northeast of Green Bay.

Along with student know-how, the project benefited from several of the plastics engineering program ��. industry partners:

NatureWorks donated 1,400 pounds of raw plastics material.
The RTP Company provided laser etching additive.
A Milacron injection molding machine, which is free on consignment to the lab, produced the devices.
A donation from EVCO Plastics to Stout University Foundation made it possible to purchase a Datalogic laser engraver at a significant discount. EVCO is owned by �� alumnus Dale Evans.

Professor Adam Kramschuster, who helped secure the donations and provided expertise with the production process, is proud of how it all came together over a couple months before classes begin Wednesday, Sept. 9.

“The high-tech equipment already available in the plastics engineering laboratory, along with the skillsets students develop in their coursework, provided the groundwork for a successful project,” Kramschuster said.

He said injection molding was chosen to make the tools because of its cost-effectiveness and ability to produce complex 3D shapes that look good.

The door puller includes the Made at �� logo, a campuswide initiative to highlight unique products designed, prototyped and produced on campus as part of the applied learning focus. The puller also includes a QR code that links to a web page to learn more about the project.

“We are fortunate to have a strong collaborative network on campus where faculty, staff and students engage in Made at �� projects,” said Ann Parsons, interim associate dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management.

“Branding the door puller as Made at �� gives long lasting testimony to the capabilities that exist in-house and the shared responsibility we all have for our community. The project is a great example of how our �� community supports our students and introduces their products to the marketplace,” Parsons said.

Two skillsets coming together

It all started with a question by Jake Thomas’ father, John, who opens a lot of doors with his school district technology job.

“Touching and wiping down doors takes a lot of time. I asked Jake about making some kind of puller I could put on a lanyard. He seeks out things to design and fabricate,” John said. “We talked about it on a Saturday afternoon. He had a design within a few hours and had one 3D printed by Sunday night.”

Jake had saved up for his first 3D printer about seven years ago in middle school and subsequently turned his closet into a workbench. He was co-captain of his Northfield High School FIRST robotics team.

“We have a silly expression in our house: You have to use your ‘superpowers’ for good. I love that he ��. taking his skills and helping others,” John said.

Jake researched the idea online and developed his prototype, which his dad still uses but which is more than twice as thick as the finished Made at �� model. The final product is 4.9 inches long, 2.23 inches high and a quarter-inch thick, weighing less than one ounce.

In between that first model and the finished one, Jake refined his idea and made about 20 of them for Admissions staff at ��. He used knowledge from classes such as Impacts of Engineering and Engineering Graphics Applications to research, design and test his idea, including how many pounds of force are needed to open a typical campus door.

Word of his idea began to spread across campus. When the decision was made to make the door pullers as a welcome gift for new students, Jake saw the project take on a whole new life with cost analysis, the Made at �� aspect, mold-making and a production schedule, all of which put him in contact with faculty and administrators, including making a pitch to Chancellor Katherine P. Frank.

Jake and his new project partner, McCarty, oversaw the production process, and they learned from each other ��. engineering skillsets.

McCarty ��. redesign of Jake ��. prototype, to meet production specifications, included using modeling software, 3D printing, hundreds of color tests for laser etching and, finally, machine programming, setup and production of the door pullers in the lab.

The aluminum mold based on McCarty ��. work was milled in �� . machine shop in Fryklund Hall by Paul Craig, manufacturing engineering instructor.

Most of McCarty ��. work was online and involved virtual meetings because of the pandemic.

“The first thing that excited me about this project is that it would challenge what I have learned so far in my classes. It was a good test to see what I am good at and what I need to work on,” McCarty said.

Both students said the project essentially took the place of their summer internships, which were canceled because of COVID-19. “I was the project engineer at a ‘contract manufacturer’ and learned a lot of things that will help me transition into working in industry once I graduate,” McCarty said.

Jake said the experience represents why he fell in love with ��.

“I wanted a school with engineering and a hands-on focus. I love learning through seeing and doing. This project has been a testing ground for me. The engineer in me came out.”

Engineering technology senior Jake Thomas identified a need and came up with a solution to help Stout students stay safe during the coronavirus pandemic.

Made at �� has collaborated with the plastics engineering program to produce customized door pullers for first-year students as part of the fall 2020 welcome to campus kit.

Engineering technology student Jake Thomas designed the door puller and created the prototype. Plastics engineering student Deven McCarty is supervising the production with assistance from plastics Professor Adam Kramschuster and manufacturing engineering instructor Paul Craig. The mold for the door puller was made by Craig in Stout's Fryklund Hall machine shop.

Kramschuster has arranged for donated materials to produce the door pullers. NatureWorks, a world-leading biopolymers supplier and innovator, has donated 1,400 lbs of Ingeo polylactic acid (PLA) performance material.

The RTP Company has donated colorant and laser etching additive for the door puller's unique Made at �� branding. Both companies have representatives serving on B.S. Plastics Engineering Advisory Committee working to ensure the program continues to provide students with the skills and knowledge they need to work in the plastics industry.

Experience as Admissions tour guide influenced design

As a senior majoring in engineering technology, Thomas is always looking for inventive ways to solve problems and help others.

"My dad had asked me if I could make something similar to an expensive door puller he found online," Thomas said. "He works as a technology specialist for a Minnesota school district and needed something to open heavy doors at work during the coronavirus pandemic."

Thomas' original design for his dad was a thick, heavy duty model with a button pusher on the end. He was inspired by his work as an Admissions tour guide to further develop the device. After limited on-campus tours started again, Thomas modified the original design to make it easier to carry and use during a tour.

"As a tour guide here on campus, things have become a lot more complex and interesting with the COVID-19 pandemic," Thomas said. "So I thought with the door puller it would help alleviate us having to touch door handles during a tour."

Thomas downsized the original design and printed a few dozen on his 3D printer at home. Admissions staff were thrilled to get them for use during tours.

His design ultimately caught the attention of Chancellor Katherine P. Frank, who thought it was a perfect example of how �� encourages students to always be innovating, even during a challenging time such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

�� leadership connected Thomas with the Made at �� initiative and faculty, who provided further expertise.

Along with being included as part of the fall 2020 welcome to campus kit, the door pullers are being provided to staff and faculty upon request.

More than 400 created for attendees at two conferences

University of Wisconsin-Stout is known for its hands-on learning, so giving two groups of conference attendees a homemade gift seemed like a natural fit.

Those who attended the Polytechnic Summit and will attend the WiSys’ WSTS two-day symposium Monday, July 22, and Tuesday, July 23, had and will have the chance to take home a Made at �� mug created by students and design Professor Jennifer Astwood. The mugs each carry the Made at �� logo.

About 450 mugs will be given out to industry and educational partners. Mugs were made last semester and this summer.

For the Polytechnic Summit, the mugs were in a package created by the packaging department with designs by graphics students. Mugs for the summit were made by Astwood with industrial design students Obadiah Nyabuto, junior, Maple Grove, Minn.; Isabel Case, junior, Hartland; and Angela Hastings, junior, Prescott. The one for the WiSys conference were made by Astwood with industrial design students Katheryn Lund, sophomore, Greenland; and Alexandre Marble, junior, Minneapolis.

“It ��. great public relations,” Astwood said of the mugs. “It ��. important to show industry partners what we are creating.”

Chuck Bomar, dean of the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management, said the mugs are symbolic of a gift commonly given with logos, but these are ones people will want to keep and use.

“Made at �� is an effort to express and share the creativity of students and faculty with all of our partners and to show the uniqueness of our campus with a locally produced gift,” Bomar said. “The mugs are nice, and because we opened it up to students, we are able to display a wide array of artistic talent, not only with the industrial designers but packaging students and students from the graphics programs as well. Our goal is to have a number of these types of products produced to promote numerous programs on campus.”

The mugs were made using a slip cast process, Astwood said. A form was created, and then a mold was created from that form. Liquid porcelain was poured into the mold, and excess liquid then was poured out of the mold. After the porcelain dried, the mug was pulled from the mold and fired in a kiln. The mugs were then glazed and fired in the kiln again. A third firing occurred to adhere the Made at �� decal to the mug. A total of 15 forms were used to create different styles of mugs.

The designers could choose the colors for the mugs and where to place the logo, Astwood said. “For the Polytechnic Summit, a lot of them were white or Stout blue,” she noted. “In the summer we experimented more with different colors.

“It was a great project for students,” Astwood said. “They were able to learn a new manufacturing process. This is a manufacturing process used at Kohler for toilets and sinks. They have been able to see a design in their head and see it become a reality. A lot of times in industrial design classes we don’t create actual products that we can make and can give to someone.”

The Chancellor ��. Office, Provost ��. Office and CSTEMM helped cover the cost of making the mugs, including materials.

Astwood said the project has taught her how to get a number of mugs done with time constraints. She also enjoyed working with the students, bouncing ideas off each other and designing and decorating the mugs.

When she was creating the mugs, she always kept in mind what felt good in the hand was utilitarian as well as beautiful. “We wanted something that would create surprise and a delight to look at and they would want to use every day,” Astwood said. “They got to keep a cup from a university that makes things and cares to make special things.”

Project is start of initiative to identify items made at the university

A new logo that brands items made by University of Wisconsin-Stout students made its debut with smocks created by students involving several majors.

The smocks will benefit university art students and children in local arts education.

Fifteen students in the Garment Production and Engineering class taught by Sheri Marnell, director of the apparel design and development program, designed and made 20 adult and 30 children ��. smocks. Students picked the art smocks for their project after learning art students had to buy their own smocks; if they forgot them had nothing to protect their clothing from paint.

Mary Cross, a senior in apparel design from Savage, Minn., is thrilled the smocks carry a logo showing they were made by �� students. “�� is letting students create,” she said. “We’re forging an idea. We’re making it here at ��. We are problem-solving. This is what we created. This is ours. We own it.”

Apparel students created two sizes of smocks, studying and implementing safety requirements for children ��. clothing. Adjustable Velcro straps help fit children of varying sizes.

The smocks and logo project involved all three �� colleges: College of Education, Hospitality, Health and Human Sciences; College of Arts, Communication, Humanities and Social Sciences; and College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management.

“There was a lot of problem-solving,” Marnell said. “The hardest part with a project like this is students are put in roles that they never had until this course, and this is a full class project so everyone works together, communication being the key.”

The Made at Stout logo was created in collaboration with CSTEMM Dean Chuck Bomar and Meriem Chida, assistant professor of retail management. “All students and faculty will be able to officially brand their products using this logo,” said Chida, adding that University Marketing Director Amy Luethmers helped fine-tune the branding guidelines.

Bomar said his goal is to show the many talented students, faculty and staff.

“As we brand the experiential learning that occurs on campus, it ��. a good reminder for everyone to see the impact we have and the things we make,” Bomar said. “It would be great to see this brand floating around the community and the country to show people the many incredible things we do at ��.”

Jessalyn Bennett, a senior in apparel design from Johnsburg, Ill., plant manager for the art smocks project, said learning to work together helps prepare her and other students for working in the industry.

Bennett loves the idea of having branded items made by �� students. “Being the first students to put it out there is a big opportunity,” Bennett said. “When you see it, you know what it is and where it was made.”

Susanna Bordelon, a senior in apparel design from Mantorville, Minn., thinks the smocks are beautiful. “It ��. fun to collaborate for the benefit of our art students,” Bordelon said.

The logo was screen-printed on the smocks to identify the use of the garments from ��.

Using a carousel with different colors and curing area, Jessica Kastello, a junior graphic communications major from Muskego, and Hailey Vosen, a cross-media graphics management junior from Wabasha, Minn., screen-printed the children ��. smocks and the pockets that would then be sewn on to the adult smocks.

The Screen and Specialty Printing class is using screen-printing equipment largely used by the Stout Typographical Society. “I take a lot of enjoyment in producing an object and seeing the graphics files from a computer become a printed product,” Kastello said. “It ��. even more satisfying when I see we’re working toward a good cause.”

Working with apparel students has helped Kastello learn more about making clothing and the work that goes into the design process, she said.

Vosen enjoyed the project because it allowed her to learn more about screen-printing. “I get to gain more experience in it,” Vosen said. “I also get more experience in the customer service aspect. We don’t do that a lot in classes where we’re doing something for others and it ��. going to be used. I like seeing stuff we make be out in the real world and being used.”
