I was excited to see him officially appointed. I know he has been, and will continue to be, a vital student voice in this space.”</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Kuester . is a </span></span></span><span><span><span>two-year term, which started on July 1, 2022, and will run through June 30, 2024. He plans to graduate in December 2024 or May 2025.&nbsp;</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>University and national roles</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Kuester is a special projects coordinator with . Disability Services, which supports about 700 students each year. </span></span></span><span><span><span>The office initially connects with students at </span></span></span><span><a href="/academics/academic-resources/advisement/first-year-freshmen" rel="noopener" target="_blank"><span><span>First-Year Orientation and Registration</span></span></a></span><span><span><span>, when students can identify if they have a need. Faculty can also make a referral for students needing accommodations.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>As a student staff member, Kuester . role is to bring forward different accessibility issues he encounters around campus. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>“Hunter helps to let us know what we can do to make navigating campus easier,” Murphy said.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>When Kuester transferred from Minneapolis Community and Technical College to , he lived in North Hall, which was recently remodeled. “But even after the new renovation, there were no Braille signs,” he said. “Nothing was labeled – not the rooms, bathrooms or facilities.”</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Heritage Hall, where most of his classes are held, had no Braille signs either. Heritage was built in the 1970s, pre-Americans with Disabilities Act, which passed into law in 1990. Heritage Hall is scheduled for&nbsp;</span></span></span><span><a href="/about-us/meet-our-leadership/business-finance-and-administrative-services/facilities-management/heritage-hall-addition-and-renovation-project" target="_blank"><span><span>major renovation</span></span></a></span><span><span><span>, expected to begin as early as fall 2025.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Facilities Management has</span></span></span><span><span><span> worked with Kuester and Disability Services to make improvements on campus. </span></span></span><span><span><span>Justin Utpadel, senior facilities officer, noted Kuester .</span></span></span><span><span><span> influence on the corrected signage design for North Hall, which will influence the South Hall signage, currently in the final approval process as the building is being renovated. Heritage Hall plans are in the predesign stage, but plans include a space for the Disability Services office, which will relocate from its current space in the University Library.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Kuester also found that the Braille signs in Memorial Student Center and Merle M. Price Commons were often incorrect. He and a co-worker collaborated with </span></span></span><span><span><span>Malinda Hebert, Student Centers associate director, to correct signage. During the </span></span></span><span><span><span>yearly event, the federation meets with representatives to help pass legislation for accessibility and equal opportunities for the blind. The Stout Student Association invites everyone for a day of hands-on demonstrations, games and ways to exercise their bodies and minds. A. Andrews is a disabled queer writer and illustrator. Masking at this event is preferred, per the speaker's request.</span></p><h3><span>Clothing Swap</span></h3><p><span>The Sustainability Council of SSA . Clothing Swap idea was presented by first-year industrial design student Bergen Haag. The swap is open and inclusive to all.</span></p><p><span>“Bergen . thought was to find a way to keep trash out of the landfill by allowing students to donate clothes they no longer like, isn't their style anymore or they just no longer want,” said Domonique Sturrup, SSA director of Financial Affairs, consultant and event planner.</span></p><h3><span>Twerkout</span></h3><p><span>Last year during Black History Month, the Black Student Union hosted </span><a href="https://connect.uwstout.edu/bsu/rsvp_boot?id=2006236" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span>Twerkout</span></a><span>, and this year BSU wanted to include it in Diversity Week. There will be light refreshments and fruit, as well as a dance-off. All are welcome.</span></p><p><span>“We wanted to do something that was Black culture and could introduce people to something they are not used to,” said Sturrup, a food science and technology senior. “Twerking traditionally is seen as something derogatory, but this is a workout and dance class, similar to jazz aerobics of the 1970s.</span></p><p><span>“We want to show that Black culture can be embraced by all. height="546">What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in earning your degree?</span></span></span></strong><span><span><span> It was <span>navigating the new concentration of applied physics. Being the first one to go through it meant that some of the classes had never been taught before, making any advice from upperclassmen nonexistent. When in classes that had been offered before, I was always the lone physics guy in a sea of engineers. However challenging, I'm glad I had the opportunity to pave the way for future applied physics graduates.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span><span>What will you appreciate most about your experience?</span></span></span></span></strong><span><span><span><span> One of the most pivotal moments I had at Stout was a simple email response from our sustainability manager, Sarah Rykal. After emailing about potential solar projects and asking about general information, she graciously allowed me to sit in on what was an all faculty/staff committee (Campuswide Energy) at the time. Being on that committee and making connections with everyone on it led to my eventual internship and a plethora of relevant information about running a sustainable campus. Many of the experiences I had on that committee led me to pursue further education in the building systems space. Recently, on a trip from her home in Nashville, Tenn., to Manitoba, Canada, she did just that.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Perry stopped in Menomonie, the city where Nelson spent a third of his life and where he was president of University of Wisconsin-Stout from 1923 to 1945, when it was Stout Institute.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><img alt="Stephanie Nelson Perry saw the official portrait of her great-grandfather, Burton Nelson, when she visited recently for the first time. In front of the portrait is a cabinet that belonged to Nelson" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="c5bc001d-43a8-4838-b408-57d073655dfa" src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/nelson%2Cburton_visit1a.jpg" style="padding:0px 30px 20px 0px" class="align-left" width="600" height="779">He was the second leader and is the second-longest serving leader in . 129-year history. Nelson Field, part of the original athletic complex, is named after him.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>A new leader, Chancellor-designate Katherine P. Frank, begins work March 1. She takes over a university with 45 buildings and about 8,500 students; back in Nelson . day it had eight buildings and fewer than 500 students.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>“He . been a fascinating figure for me, and our family has always taken great pride in what he accomplished,” Perry said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Perry toured with Jen Rudiger of Stout University Foundation and learned more about her great-grandfather . legacy. She also met with University Archivist Heather Stecklein and brought along family photos, letters, genealogy, articles and other information that was scanned and saved.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>While in Archives, on the fifth floor of the library, Perry saw for the first time Nelson . official portrait, part of a gallery of portraits of school presidents and chancellors. It was painted in 1948 by noted artist George New after several sittings with Nelson, according to the book </span><a href="https://secure.touchnet.com/C21720_ustores/web/store_main.jsp?STOREID=76"><span>“An Idea Comes of Age: , 1891-2016,”</span></a><span> a copy of which Perry received from the Foundation.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Two chapters of the book are devoted to the Nelson years.</span></span></span></p> <img alt="Perry provided University Archivist Heather Stecklein, right, with photos and family history related to her great-grandfather, former President Burton Nelson. He vowed to see the school through World War II and “quit when Hitler quits.” He submitted his resignation the month after the German leader committed suicide.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><img alt="Stout Institute President Burton Nelson sits in his Harvey Hall office in 1936." data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="70a30fe9-382b-4228-8499-e583bbdb16ec" src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/nelson%2Cburton4a.jpg" style="padding:0px 30px 20px 0px" class="align-left" width="500" height="625">Nelson lived in Menomonie until 1957, when his wife died. He then moved to Syracuse, N.Y., to live with a son — Perry . grandfather — and died in 1961. A funeral was held in Menomonie, and he was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, where several other leaders are buried, including founder James Huff Stout.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>A native of Pennsylvania, Nelson had teaching and education leadership positions in Illinois and in Racine prior to being hired at Stout Institute. “He loved Wisconsin and spent most of his life here,” Perry said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>His accomplishments at were many, not the least of which was keeping the school afloat despite large state budget cuts during the Great Depression and the challenges of WWII, when enrollment slumped from 600 to 280, according to the book.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>“He brought the school through pretty difficult times and provided a sound base that helped it grow,” Perry said. “He seemed like he put his heart and soul into it.”</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>While Nelson was president, the Stout Student Association – student government — was formed; the university received national accreditation; the Graduate School began; the remaining two-year programs were phased out to focus on four-year degrees; and the physical campus expanded with the addition of the historic Louis Smith Tainter House, the athletic fields and Lynwood Hall.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Lynwood Hall, since torn down, was on Wilson Avenue east of Harvey Hall. Seeing a pressing need for more student housing, Nelson purchased it himself before the state bought him out in 1925. It became the first men . residence hall in 1929, according to “An Idea Comes of Age.”</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><strong><span><span><img alt="Nelson Field at was named after Burton Nelson when it was dedicated in 1935, while he still was president. He pushed for the purchase of 10 acres four blocks south of the existing campus to create a football field and other fields. Students petitioned the state Board of Trustees to name it Burton E. Nelson Field, which was dedicated during the 1935 homecoming football game. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The fields gave the school a literal direction: It has since expanded south to the athletic complex.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>During her visit, Perry went to Nelson Field, which is being upgraded with artificial turf for the women . soccer team and recreational uses. Perry found the dedication plaque, which was covered with snow.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Nelson was known as a students’ president. He relaxed curfew and women . uniform rules and expanded homecoming. Instead of calling him president, students affectionately nicknamed him “Prexy,” according to the book.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>He volunteered with many nonprofits, was on the Wisconsin Welfare Council and was a district governor for Rotary International. Classes begin Wednesday, Sept. 4. North Hall has undergone a complete renovation, along with three small additions and a new main entryway. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>At Price, work has been limited to the first floor, exterior and entryways. The second floor, housing the main student cafeteria, previously was remodeled.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>A third campus project, on the exterior of historic Bowman Hall, will continue into the fall and likely resume next spring. It involves replacing 30,000 bricks, stone accents and supports, and brick mortar and windows throughout. Also, the 135-foot Clock Tower will get a new roof and structural repairs. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The only interior work at Bowman, renovation of the south side extension that houses Registration and Records, wrapped up earlier this year. Built in 1967, the building has expanded 14,000 feet to about 90,000 square feet. It will house about 370 students.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>“The bathrooms were moved to the outer edges of the building, opening it up in the middle for lounges. It . much brighter,” said Mike Bowman, project manager for <a href="/about-us/meet-our-leadership/administrative-and-student-life-services/facilities-management" title="Facilities Management">Facilities Management</a>.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><strong><span><span>Price Commons</span></span></strong></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Also built in 1967, Price Commons has new windows and sills, a refurbished patio on the west side and some new bricks, along with expanded entryways on all sides.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The new first floor will feature refurbished offices for the LGBTQ center, the <a href="/life-stout/student-services/diversity/qube">Qube</a>, and an expanded and updated lounge that opens to the patio. The Qube reopened in April.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>“It . going to be a beautiful building. When you walk in the east side, you’ll be able to see all the way to the west side. Before, it was closed off. Bowman Hall, in the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1897 by school founder James Huff Stout. It mostly houses student support offices as well as some classrooms.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The last major aspect of the $8.95 million renovation will be structural steel and other repairs to the tower and replacing the copper roof. The quill weathervane on the roof will be restored. Depending on the fall weather, the work may wrap up next spring.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The bells in the Clock Tower, which ring every quarter hour, were silenced in late May as work began on the tower area. They have rung for special occasions. The decision was between Stout and Platteville, and boy am I glad I didn’t go there. Some specific challenges were my rigorous major; my senior capstone class, which included full documentation and building of a specific engineering project; three summer engineering internships; being a student-athlete; and blowing out my knee my sophomore year, which required two surgeries. After rehabilitation, I returned to football and tore my other ACL last fall.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span>What stands out among your college experiences?</span></span></span></strong><span><span><span>&nbsp;Football taught me a lot of great values and gave me some of the best memories and friends of my college career.
