For Blue Devil fans it ��. pure autumn bliss — nine consecutive days in October to celebrate at �� with a variety of activities for students, families, alumni and the community.

The festivities kick off with Stout Proud Weekend from Friday, Oct. 6, through Sunday, Oct. 8, geared to families and supporters of students but is open to everyone. Then, it ��. homecoming week, highlighted by the annual downtown parade and football game Saturday, Oct. 14.

All of the events are open to the public. Many are free, but some require tickets.

Stout Proud Weekend

Stout Proud Weekend formerly was held in April as Family Weekend.

Events Friday include indoor rock wall climbing from 3 to 9 p.m. at Stout Adventures, dinner at Merle M. Price Commons cafeteria ($5 for guests, card only), a photo booth, the movie “Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles” from 6 to 9 p.m. in Applied Arts and a women ��. volleyball match against UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m. at Johnson Fieldhouse.

A full day of events is scheduled for Saturday:

11 a.m.-1:30 p.m., Stout Proud Picnic, featuring the Bear Creek Band, on the lawn south of the Memorial Student Center. Meal tickets can be purchased in advance. The event also will feature tie-dye and caricature artists
Noon-4 p.m., Rock Wall Climbing at Stout Adventures
1:30-2:30 p.m., Stout Secrets, at the Terrace, Memorial Student Center
2 p.m., Football Game: �� vs. UW-Oshkosh, Williams Stadium
3 p.m., Roommate Game, at the Terrace, Memorial Student Center
5-7 p.m., Dinner at Merle Price Commons
6 p.m. & 7:30 p.m., Bingo, at the Terrace, Memorial Student Center

On Sunday, the �� Antique Auto Club will hold a car show from 9 a.m. to noon in Lot 14, west of Bowman Hall. Canvas Painting and Coffee, with scones, will be led by art education students from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Terrace in the Memorial Student Center. A brunch is scheduled from 10 a.m. to noon at Price Commons.

Replacing the former Family Weekend in April is Destination Weekend, April 5-6, 2024, kicking off a month of special events on campus.

Homecoming parade, game, Glow Run

Homecoming week is capped off Saturday with the annual downtown parade and football game.

The parade begins at 11 a.m. at 10th Avenue E. and Broadway streets. The route goes north on Broadway, east on Main Street then south on Third Street E. through campus toward the Sports and Fitness Center, ending at 13th Avenue.

Community organizations, including school groups, businesses and nonprofits, can participate in the parade. Register here.

The homecoming football game against UW-Stevens Point kicks off at 1 p.m. at Williams Stadium. Also, a women ��. soccer game against UW-Platteville begins at 2 p.m. at Nelson Field.

Tailgate boxes and Stout Proud digital swag are available for purchase to show support of the Blue Devils. Proceeds from the sales of the tailgate boxes support the �� Student Emergency Fund.

University Recreation ��. annual Glow Run, a 2-mile fun run through campus, is at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 13, beginning and ending at Johnson Fieldhouse.

Homecoming alumni events

Two special events for alumni are planned.

An event Oct. 13 at Lucette Brewing begins with alumni awards from 4 to 6 p.m. followed by a social and pizza from 6 to 8 p.m. Register here.

The Alumni Association will recognize Joe Pregont, 1981 graduate, with the Distinguished Alumnus award and Danielle Goss, 2013 graduate, with the Trailblazer Alumna award.

On Saturday, Breakfast at the Buck features a free breakfast for alumni from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Silver Dollar, 315 Main St. E. Register here.

Homecoming student events

Student-focused events during the week begin with an ice cream social from 1 to 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, at the amphitheater of the Memorial Student Center.

Blue Devil Productions is hosting several weeklong student events, including a Banner Battle to show �� pride; a Food Drive Battle to support Helping Hand Food+ Pantry; and the annual medallion hunt. The annual Soapbox Derby, featuring student-made cars, will begin at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 10, at Second Street W. and Wilson Avenue.

Students also can play glow-in-the-dark Bingo and take part in a chalking competition. Comedian and balloon artist John Cassidy will perform from 8 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 11, in the Great Hall of the student center.

�� student Hunter Kuester is an advocate for the blind at the university, state and national levels and was recently appointed to the UW System President ��. Advisory Committee on Disability Issues.

Kuester, of Watertown, believes strongly in educating others and thinks the best way to be an ally and advocate for people with disabilities is to “really listen to their experiences and understand their differences.”

As a member of PACDI, Kuester, who is blind, helps to provide information and recommendations relating to individuals with disabilities to UW System President Jay Rothman. The committee is charged with making recommendations in three major areas:

Policy and guideline implementation
Procedures for periodic reporting of data regarding disabilities
Disability related issues raised by UW System Administration, universities or units.

PACDI promotes issues to provide a supportive environment for students with disabilities, most recently promoting access to assistive technology and the implementation of a universal design.

“My aim is to help the UW System understand fully what accessibility means and to make renovation recommendations, taking disability and accessibility into account,” said Kuester, who is a double major in hotel, restaurant and tourism management; and real estate property management.

Ann Murphy, director of �� . Disability Services, is a member of PACDI. One of this year ��. initiatives is to roll out the Digital Maturity Assessment Survey, as a part of UW System ��. commitment to inclusion, equity and compliance.

“Each UW university will complete the survey – a self-study, looking into how they’re supporting digital accessibility and where they need to grow,” she explained, giving students access to JAWS screen readers and Braille displays for websites as examples.

Murphy, who recommended Kuester to the committee, said “PACDI was looking for a student candidate who has lived experience with one or more disabilities and/or who is a strong ally for accessibility.

“Hunter is a clear leader and is very involved with leadership opportunities and organizations. He has a lot to contribute and is very effective in using his voice to advocate for people who are blind and who have disabilities. He ��. a big picture thinker and an impressive student,” she said.

PACDI also likes student representatives to have the endorsement of their student senate, which Murphy helped facilitate with the Stout Student Association. SSA represents and advocates for students with disabilities on campus to foster an inclusive environment for all students.

Kuester ��. endorsement then went to John Achter, director of Student Behavioral Health with the UW System and liaison for PACDI, for consideration before being appointed by Rothman. A similar process was followed for another student representative, who is from UW-Whitewater, Achter said.

“Hunter is a dedicated student leader, especially on matters surrounding accessibility and accommodation,” said SSA President Cody Gentz. “His dedication to advocacy and leadership experience made him a natural choice to be the Stout Student Association's nominee. I was excited to see him officially appointed. I know he has been, and will continue to be, a vital student voice in this space.”

Kuester ��. is a two-year term, which started on July 1, 2022, and will run through June 30, 2024. He plans to graduate in December 2024 or May 2025.

University and national roles

Kuester is a special projects coordinator with �� . Disability Services, which supports about 700 students each year. The office initially connects with students at First-Year Orientation and Registration, when students can identify if they have a need. Faculty can also make a referral for students needing accommodations.

As a student staff member, Kuester ��. role is to bring forward different accessibility issues he encounters around campus.

“Hunter helps to let us know what we can do to make navigating campus easier,” Murphy said.

When Kuester transferred from Minneapolis Community and Technical College to ��, he lived in North Hall, which was recently remodeled. “But even after the new renovation, there were no Braille signs,” he said. “Nothing was labeled – not the rooms, bathrooms or facilities.”

Heritage Hall, where most of his classes are held, had no Braille signs either. Heritage was built in the 1970s, pre-Americans with Disabilities Act, which passed into law in 1990. Heritage Hall is scheduled for major renovation, expected to begin as early as fall 2025.

Facilities Management has worked with Kuester and Disability Services to make improvements on campus. Justin Utpadel, senior facilities officer, noted Kuester ��. influence on the corrected signage design for North Hall, which will influence the South Hall signage, currently in the final approval process as the building is being renovated. Heritage Hall plans are in the predesign stage, but plans include a space for the Disability Services office, which will relocate from its current space in the University Library.

Kuester also found that the Braille signs in Memorial Student Center and Merle M. Price Commons were often incorrect. He and a co-worker collaborated with Malinda Hebert, Student Centers associate director, to correct signage. They used a Braille label-maker to add missing signs, correct signs and add the function of certain rooms, such as meeting rooms. “I very much appreciated his efforts,” Hebert said.

As the former senator of Accessibility and Accommodation with the Stout Student Association, Kuester is working with Facilities Management to install additional exterior lighting on campus, specifically around the residence halls and popular campus areas.

Members of the SSA collected data and student surveys about campus safety, including lighting, cameras and traffic control, and have asked for lighting improvements to be included in the South Hall renovation project, said Fiona Lindsay, SSA vice president.

The Campus Exteriors and Development Committee is holding its annual campus night walk on Tuesday, March 21, to assess the grounds and exterior spaces for aesthetics, lighting, visibility and overall safety.

Kuester is working on an advocacy presentation for students with disabilities. “I want to help them gain confidence and learn to advocate for themselves,” he said. “I can be a voice for students now and for students after me, making campus more accessible for them.”

Kuester is also involved with the National Federation of the Blind and recently attended the annual Washington Seminar, in Washington D.C. During the yearly event, the federation meets with representatives to help pass legislation for accessibility and equal opportunities for the blind. One of this year ��. priorities was website accessibility, Kuester said.

A passion for hospitality

As a double major in hotel, restaurant and tourism management; and real estate property management, Kuester has a passion for hospitality.

Last summer, he was a premium services management intern with the Milwaukee Brewers. Employed through Delaware North, Kuester worked in the food and beverage services during game day and nongame day operations at the ballpark.

“It was a good experience, dipping my toes into hospitality,” he said.

Kuester plans one day to open his own distillery and appreciates all of the different types of spirits. “It ��. an art form – a very long process. I like to put a smile on people ��. faces,” he said.

Getting Connected to Disability Services

We’re here to represent YOU, the student. The Stout Student Association is the student government at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Granted authority under Wisconsin State Statute 36.09(5), we have the authority to represent the entire student body on issues surrounding student life, services, and interests.

You become a member of the Stout Student Association simply by enrolling at ��. This means that you can get engaged with campus right away! All students are eligible to run for positions or vote in elections and referendums, and each fall there are a variety of open positions that can be filled by students. By getting involved with the Stout Student Association, you can make and meet other passionate student leaders and integrate yourself into the heart of the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Our Mission

The mission of the Stout Student Association is to elevate student voices and to protect the rights student hold in the governing of the university. Since our inception in 1923, we have been a student-led organization advocating for students.

We fulfill our mission and responsibilities to the students through representing the students through participation in policy development and shared governance, allocating of various student fees, and developing initiatives and programming for the benefit of the student body and the university as a whole.

The SSA is regularly in contact with administration, staff and faculty, and we work with those groups to make sure all campus decisions creates a better environment for the student body.

�� . Diversity Week will open with a carnival focused on accessibility, free and open to all on Monday, Feb. 20.

Diversity Week events will celebrate and acknowledge differences through interactive theater and discussion opportunities on race, gender and identity; International Mother Language Day; art therapy, dance and more.

“This year for Diversity Week, Stout Student Association and the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office planned events that are more engaging. We wanted to have interactive educational events,” said Alex Cluphf, SSA director of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

Diversity Week opens with the we ARE Carnival (Accessible Recreation for Everyone). The Stout Student Association invites everyone for a day of hands-on demonstrations, games and ways to exercise their bodies and minds. Popcorn and hot chocolate will also be provided.

“We ARE is an all-inclusive event. Students, faculty, staff, community members – everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend,” said Cluphf, a senior in computer science.

Comedian DJ Demers will perform stand-up from 5 to 6 p.m. Demers identifies as deaf and is originally from Canada but has since moved to the U.S. His shows are both personal and universal.

We ARE started with Cluphf ��. idea to have an event that was focused on accessibility visibility. “A big part of the we ARE idea is that accessible recreation is not as hard or as intimidating as people may first perceive it. We want to showcase that to folks who need accommodations and those who don't need accommodations,” Cluphf said.

SSA has collaborated with a number of partners, including community volunteers and campus organizations and departments in creating we ARE. “Stout's athletics program and esports program have both joined in this event and have made pledges to be more accessible,” they added.

'BIPOC Mental Health,' with Dr. Stacey Pearson-Wharton

Dr. Stacey Pearson-Wharton's presentation “BIPOC Mental Health – Keeping it 100%,” will discuss BIPOC – Black, Indigenous, People of Color – mental health and well-being, explore issues from a cultural lens and how to mediate race-based stress as well as bolster mental health. Her talk is sponsored by the Equity in Mental Health Committee.

Diversity and Desserts

The Diversity and Desserts Series will be an open dialogue for attendees to discuss current events and happenings both locally and nationally, as well as potential policies, laws and procedures that may impact EDI across various sectors and individually.

“It will also be a chance for folks who have marginalized identities to share their experiences at Stout if they are comfortable doing so. Those conversations will then help us identify how we can better serve faculty, staff and students with those underserved identities and experiences,” said Quin Brooks, assistant chancellor and senior diversity officer in the EDI Office.

International Mother Language Day

On International Mother Language Day, Margaret Noodin, a native Anishinaabe speaker and professor at UW-Milwaukee, will present “Loving Our Mother Languages Through the Seasons of Our Lives.”

The presentation is co-sponsored by the Literature Committee, Center for Applied Ethics and Multicultural Student Services. Additional readings by native language speakers may follow after Noodin's presentation.

Supporting Military-Affiliated Students

This Veteran Services workshop aims to foster an improved understanding of and support for the military-affiliated student population at �� to enable their success. Workshop participants will learn more about support services and gain insights to better support this student group and the �� community.

“Military service members and veterans bring unique perspectives and valuable experiences but may face challenges as students,” said Chris Engen, military education benefits coordinator. “The spouses and children of veterans and military service members also comprise a segment of the student population.”

You. Me. We.

Multicultural Student Services is hosting You. Me. We., an Interactive Program on Racism, Sexism and LGBTQ Issues, is presented by GTC Dramatic Dialogues. It is an interactive theater and discussion of diversity. During talkbacks, participants can confront the characters and voice their opinions on issues or race, sex, sexual orientation and gender.

‘Queer Inclusive Sex and Disability,’ with A. Andrews

The Qube welcomes A. Andrews to �� for their talk “Queer Inclusive Sex and Disability.” Andrews’ talk covers the basics of disability sexuality, common myths about disabled bodies, communication tips and practical suggestions for having the best sexual experience possible. Clothing Swap

The Sustainability Council of SSA ��. Clothing Swap idea was presented by first-year industrial design student Bergen Haag. The swap is open and inclusive to all.

“Bergen ��. thought was to find a way to keep trash out of the landfill by allowing students to donate clothes they no longer like, isn't their style anymore or they just no longer want,” said Domonique Sturrup, SSA director of Financial Affairs, consultant and event planner.

Twerkout

Last year during Black History Month, the Black Student Union hosted Twerkout, and this year BSU wanted to include it in Diversity Week. There will be light refreshments and fruit, as well as a dance-off. All are welcome.

“We wanted to do something that was Black culture and could introduce people to something they are not used to,” said Sturrup, a food science and technology senior. “Twerking traditionally is seen as something derogatory, but this is a workout and dance class, similar to jazz aerobics of the 1970s.

“We want to show that Black culture can be embraced by all. It ��. a way to work out and hang out. No matter the race, we can all enjoy the event,” she said.

Move-In, Blue Rah, Week One Orientation, Backyard Bash lead up to start of classes Sept. 7

With five major events and activities planned, the focus is on students as the start of the fall semester approaches at ��.

Fall classes begin Wednesday, Sept. 7, but special events leading up to the start of the semester will help ensure that first-year, transfer and returning students are ready to go on opening day.

Move-In: Students living on campus began moving in their belongings on Aug. 27 and will continue through Sunday, Sept. 4. Students schedule a two-hour slot to unload their vehicle and can unpack in a relaxing atmosphere. The week-plus move-in period also provides flexibility with their schedule before classes begin.

Blue Rah: The annual celebration for first-year and transfer students begins at 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 4, at Johnson Fieldhouse. Dancing, music, games, trivia and surprises will be part of the celebration.

Speakers will include Chancellor Katherine Frank and Dean of Students Sandi Scott, along with representatives from the Stout Student Association and Athletics.

Blue Rah, which began in 2007, is co-hosted by Orientation and New Student Programs and Blue Devil Productions.

Week One Orientation: First-year and transfer students can meet new people and get acclimated throughout the first week.

“The goal of Week One is to connect students to their peers and begin building community on campus through many ice breakers, group team builders and social activities,” said Britta Miller, coordinator of New Student Orientation.

Information sessions include Your Voice. Your Actions. Your Impact., by the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office; and Wellness 101 presented by Prevea Student Health Services and the Counseling Center.

Free activities will be offered during the week, including Blue Devil Productions’ first Thursday Night Out, Sept. 8. It will feature the bands the Over Unders at 8 p.m. and headliner Running Lights at 9 p.m. at the Terrace in the Memorial Student Center.

Backyard Bash: The annual party featuring student organization booths, music, food and inflatables is scheduled from 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6, on the lawn south of the student center.

�� has approximately 150 student organizations, which are coordinated through the Involvement Center.

Meet Menomonie: Students can visit booths to learn about local businesses and services from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 7, at the Multipurpose Room of the Sports and Fitness Center. Coupons, prizes and free samples will be available.

�� partners with the Greater Menomonie Area Chamber of Commerce to hold the event.

Also scheduled during opening week is the annual Stout Student Association ice cream social, featuring free ice cream, from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 6, at the student center amphitheater, east entrance. Students are invited to stop by and learn about student government.

For faculty and staff, presemester professional development opportunities began Aug. 22 and continue through Friday, Sept. 2, including universitywide Engagement Sessions scheduled Monday, Aug. 29.

Diversity Week at �� will open with an art exhibit that asks artists and visitors to reflect on their identities and the journeys they’ve taken to understand themselves.

OASIS, What a Time to Be... features the works of 17 Black, Indigenous and People of Color students and 10 alumni artists and designers. The juried exhibition will open ��'s Diversity Week with an artists’ reception held from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 18, in the Student Art Gallery 209, on the second floor of the Applied Arts Building. All are welcome.

Multicultural Student Services Coordinator Vickie Sanchez described OASIS as being part of a journey. “Although difficult at times, there is beauty and joy. Exhibit pieces are about the artists’ journey, identity, story, history, truths, feelings and inspirations.

“Artists reflect on ‘What A Time To Be...’ Black, Indigenous, Brown, Asian, LatinX, Hmong, biracial, multiracial, LGBTQIA+, a student, a protester, an educator, a friend, emotional, hopeful, outspoken, brave, courageous, an artist,” she said.

The exhibit is a collaboration of the School of Art and Design and Multicultural Student Services. Committee and juror members are Sanchez; SOAD Professor and Pre-BFA Program Director Tamara Brantmeier; second-year industrial design student Jon Rosario, of Ijamsville, Maryland; and first-year studio art student Angelina Garcia, of Marshfield, who designed marketing materials for the exhibit.

“At Stout, we don't see a lot of our BIPOC community artists' art showcased on the walls of this establishment. We honestly never know the identities of our artists,” Sanchez said. “The exhibit gives an opportunity to highlight and share the talents of students both past and present and occupy gallery space that ��. centered around the BIPOC expression. To take notice of individuals whose work is often not seen, heard or felt.

“We hope viewers will take in the emotions that art brings, learn of perspectives that are expressed, and see the beauty and talent of the artists,” she said.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in earning your degree? It was navigating the new concentration of applied physics. Being the first one to go through it meant that some of the classes had never been taught before, making any advice from upperclassmen nonexistent. When in classes that had been offered before, I was always the lone physics guy in a sea of engineers. However challenging, I'm glad I had the opportunity to pave the way for future applied physics graduates.

What will you appreciate most about your �� experience? One of the most pivotal moments I had at Stout was a simple email response from our sustainability manager, Sarah Rykal. After emailing about potential solar projects and asking about general information, she graciously allowed me to sit in on what was an all faculty/staff committee (Campuswide Energy) at the time. Being on that committee and making connections with everyone on it led to my eventual internship and a plethora of relevant information about running a sustainable campus. Many of the experiences I had on that committee led me to pursue further education in the building systems space. I am forever grateful for the opportunities and experiences that committee brought me.

What ��. next in your life? I will be attending the University of Colorado-Boulder to study building systems engineering in the fall.

She learned more about Burton E. Nelson's accomplishments as president from 1923-45

Throughout her life, Stephanie Nelson Perry has heard stories and read family history about the many accomplishments of her great-grandfather, Burton Edsel Nelson.

Perry always wanted to learn more about him. Recently, on a trip from her home in Nashville, Tenn., to Manitoba, Canada, she did just that.

Perry stopped in Menomonie, the city where Nelson spent a third of his life and where he was president of University of Wisconsin-Stout from 1923 to 1945, when it was Stout Institute.

He was the second leader and is the second-longest serving leader in �� . 129-year history. Nelson Field, part of the original athletic complex, is named after him.

A new �� leader, Chancellor-designate Katherine P. Frank, begins work March 1. She takes over a university with 45 buildings and about 8,500 students; back in Nelson ��. day it had eight buildings and fewer than 500 students.

“He ��. been a fascinating figure for me, and our family has always taken great pride in what he accomplished,” Perry said.

Perry toured �� with Jen Rudiger of Stout University Foundation and learned more about her great-grandfather ��. legacy. She also met with University Archivist Heather Stecklein and brought along family photos, letters, genealogy, articles and other information that was scanned and saved.

While in Archives, on the fifth floor of the library, Perry saw for the first time Nelson ��. official portrait, part of a gallery of portraits of school presidents and chancellors. It was painted in 1948 by noted artist George New after several sittings with Nelson, according to the book “An Idea Comes of Age: ��, 1891-2016,” a copy of which Perry received from the Foundation.

Two chapters of the book are devoted to the Nelson years.

Perry also visited Nelson ��. old office, now a conference room in Harvey Hall.

‘He put his heart and soul into it’

Nelson retired in 1945 at nearly age 78. He vowed to see the school through World War II and “quit when Hitler quits.” He submitted his resignation the month after the German leader committed suicide.

Nelson lived in Menomonie until 1957, when his wife died. He then moved to Syracuse, N.Y., to live with a son — Perry ��. grandfather — and died in 1961. A funeral was held in Menomonie, and he was buried in Evergreen Cemetery, where several other �� leaders are buried, including founder James Huff Stout.

A native of Pennsylvania, Nelson had teaching and education leadership positions in Illinois and in Racine prior to being hired at Stout Institute. “He loved Wisconsin and spent most of his life here,” Perry said.

His accomplishments at �� were many, not the least of which was keeping the school afloat despite large state budget cuts during the Great Depression and the challenges of WWII, when enrollment slumped from 600 to 280, according to the book.

“He brought the school through pretty difficult times and provided a sound base that helped it grow,” Perry said. “He seemed like he put his heart and soul into it.”

While Nelson was president, the Stout Student Association – student government — was formed; the university received national accreditation; the Graduate School began; the remaining two-year programs were phased out to focus on four-year degrees; and the physical campus expanded with the addition of the historic Louis Smith Tainter House, the athletic fields and Lynwood Hall.

Lynwood Hall, since torn down, was on Wilson Avenue east of Harvey Hall. Seeing a pressing need for more student housing, Nelson purchased it himself before the state bought him out in 1925. It became the first men ��. residence hall in 1929, according to “An Idea Comes of Age.”

Nelson Field

Nelson also expanded the athletic facilities. He pushed for the purchase of 10 acres four blocks south of the existing campus to create a football field and other fields. Students petitioned the state Board of Trustees to name it Burton E. Nelson Field, which was dedicated during the 1935 homecoming football game.

The fields gave the school a literal direction: It has since expanded south to the athletic complex.

During her visit, Perry went to Nelson Field, which is being upgraded with artificial turf for the women ��. soccer team and recreational uses. Perry found the dedication plaque, which was covered with snow.

Nelson was known as a students’ president. He relaxed curfew and women ��. uniform rules and expanded homecoming. Instead of calling him president, students affectionately nicknamed him “Prexy,” according to the book.

He volunteered with many nonprofits, was on the Wisconsin Welfare Council and was a district governor for Rotary International. Through Rotary, he helped bring international students to campus.

“After reading many of my great-grandfather ��. personal letters to his family, he seemed like he was a very kind man,” Perry said.

At his retirement dinner in 1945, Nelson thought about all that had been done in his nearly 23 years at the helm of Stout Institute and said, “What has been accomplished is the result of teamwork.”

Ribbon-cutting, tours part of celebration for major renovation projects

�� is ready to celebrate the renovation of two major buildings.

A grand reopening celebration at North Hall and Merle M. Price Commons will begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 25, between the buildings on south campus, followed by music, hors d’oeuvres and tours from 4 to 6 p.m. North Hall will have self-guided tours and Price Commons guided tours.

Speakers will include Patrick Guilfoile, interim chancellor; Phil Lyons, vice chancellor for Administrative and Student Life Services; Deon Canon, Stout Student Association president; Mike Bowman, Facilities Management; Kathleen Baker, University Housing director; Amanda Hildenbrand, Residence Hall Association president; and Malinda Hebert, Student Centers assistant director.

North Hall, a residence hall, was completely renovated, including new entryways, bathrooms and common areas.

Price Commons, which houses student services offices on the first floor and the main student cafeteria on the second floor, was renovated on the first floor and exterior. The new main floor features a fireplace lounge.

Renovation on the buildings, both built in 1967, began in spring 2018 and mostly wrapped up in late summer. Work on the Price Commons patio on the west side of the building will be completed in the spring of 2020.

A third renovation project that began in 2018 is continuing. Work on Bowman Hall and the Clock Tower, mostly on the exterior, will halt as winter approaches and wrap up in the spring.

North Hall, Price Commons to reopen in fall; Bowman Hall project continues

With less than a month to go before fall semester classes, renovations are close to wrapping up at two University of Wisconsin-Stout buildings.

North Hall and Merle M. Price Commons, adjacent buildings whose east sides open to the campus mall and west sides face Broadway Street, will reopen around the end of August.

Students are scheduled to move into residence halls, including North, on Sunday, Sept. 1. Classes begin Wednesday, Sept. 4. North Hall has undergone a complete renovation, along with three small additions and a new main entryway.

At Price, work has been limited to the first floor, exterior and entryways. The second floor, housing the main student cafeteria, previously was remodeled.

A third campus project, on the exterior of historic Bowman Hall, will continue into the fall and likely resume next spring. It involves replacing 30,000 bricks, stone accents and supports, and brick mortar and windows throughout. Also, the 135-foot Clock Tower will get a new roof and structural repairs.

The only interior work at Bowman, renovation of the south side extension that houses Registration and Records, wrapped up earlier this year. Original brick walls and beams were exposed.

The three projects, which began in spring 2018, total more than $38 million.

North Hall

Workers are putting the finishing touches on the exterior of the building, including the new ground-level east entry, finishing and furnishing the interior and landscaping.

The $21.74 million project, funded with student fees, includes all new student rooms, bathrooms, common areas, entries and infrastructure. Built in 1967, the building has expanded 14,000 feet to about 90,000 square feet. It will house about 370 students.

“The bathrooms were moved to the outer edges of the building, opening it up in the middle for lounges. It ��. much brighter,” said Mike Bowman, project manager for Facilities Management.

Price Commons

Also built in 1967, Price Commons has new windows and sills, a refurbished patio on the west side and some new bricks, along with expanded entryways on all sides.

The new first floor will feature refurbished offices for the LGBTQ center, the Qube, and an expanded and updated lounge that opens to the patio. The Qube reopened in April.

“It ��. going to be a beautiful building. When you walk in the east side, you’ll be able to see all the way to the west side. Before, it was closed off. This will help brighten it up a lot,” Bowman said of the $7.57 million project, also funded with student fees.

The new patio “will be much more inviting for students,” he added.

The first floor also houses student support offices, such as the Campus Card Office, University Dining and University Housing.

Much of the work grinding out and replacing the mortar between bricks has been done, as has replacing the windows — to the original full openings — and stone.

The new bricks, stone and windows are historically accurate, overseen by an architect hired by the state. Bowman Hall, in the National Register of Historic Places, was built in 1897 by school founder James Huff Stout. It mostly houses student support offices as well as some classrooms.

The last major aspect of the $8.95 million renovation will be structural steel and other repairs to the tower and replacing the copper roof. The quill weathervane on the roof will be restored. Depending on the fall weather, the work may wrap up next spring.

The bells in the Clock Tower, which ring every quarter hour, were silenced in late May as work began on the tower area. They have rung for special occasions. Regular bell chimes could resume in October.

In a small separate project, the timing mechanism for the four clock faces in the tower isn’t working properly and will be repaired.

Why did you choose ��? I chose �� because of the major, affordability, location, environment and to play football. The decision was between Stout and Platteville, and boy am I glad I didn’t go there. If I had to do it again, I would choose Stout in a heartbeat.

What are the biggest obstacles you faced in earning your degree? Some of the biggest obstacles I faced were just juggling everything I was involved in while still doing well in each. Some specific challenges were my rigorous major; my senior capstone class, which included full documentation and building of a specific engineering project; three summer engineering internships; being a student-athlete; and blowing out my knee my sophomore year, which required two surgeries. After rehabilitation, I returned to football and tore my other ACL last fall.

What stands out among your college experiences? Football taught me a lot of great values and gave me some of the best memories and friends of my college career. The organizations I was able to participate in helped me to grow as a person, give back and prepare me for a professional environment. I also enjoyed many weekend festivities with great friends.

What ��. next? I have already accepted a job with a company called Sonoco in their Global Plastics division. The plant I will be at is in Dekalb, Ill., and I will be moving there after graduation to start work in June as a manufacturing associate in their emerging leaders program. It ��. about a two-year rotational and orientation period before moving up the ladder for qualified candidates right out of college. I met Sonoco recruiters at the 2018 Fall Career Fair, had an on-campus interview and then was flown out to corporate in Hartsville, S.C., for another interview before I received an offer.
