University lauded by Military Times for services to veterans, their families

�� can add another medal to its collection, having been named to the 2025 Best for Vets Colleges list by Military Times for its commitment to serving veterans and their families.

�� was honored on the annual list, announced on Nov. 17 by Military Times, ranking first in Wisconsin among traditional and online universities. �� was among four of the 13 Universities of Wisconsin schools that made the list, placing 24th in the Midwest and 177th nationwide.

“�� . continued selection by Military Times as one of their Best for Vets Colleges demonstrates our strong commitment to providing meaningful support to our veteran students. We are proud these graduates continue to achieve high outcomes, with strong employment and career placement rates,” said retired Army Lt. Col. Brian Hackner, the university ��. military education benefits coordinator who oversees Veteran Services.

According to Military Times, measurements of student success play the largest role in determining the rankings of universities and colleges on the list. Military-specific resources and levels of financial assistance are also factors. The Best for Vets rankings are compiled by Virginia-based Military Times, a source of independent news and information for service members and their families.

�� saluted as Military Friendly School for servicemembers, veterans and their spouses

For the 16th consecutive year, university honored for efforts to help vets make most of their benefits

�� has repeatedly been ranked highly for the quality of its services to both veterans and active members of the military. Last spring, the university received a silver designation as a Military Friendly® School for 2025-26 because of its efforts to create sustainable and meaningful education paths for members of the military community. It was the 16th consecutive year that �� earned a place on that list, placing it among only five Wisconsin institutions to rank as a Military Friendly® small public university. �� also was designated as a Military Spouse Friendly School. The Military Friendly® rankings are published by G.I. Jobs Magazine.

As of fall 2025, there were nearly 250 self-identified veteran and military students on campus — including veterans, those on active duty, and National Guard and Reserve members — and another 587 students who were the spouses or dependent children of veterans or military members.

The university ��. most recent First Destination Report, released in spring 2025, stated that 100% of veteran graduates were employed within six months of graduation.

Ongoing support for veterans

�� . Military and Veteran Resource Center (MVRC) is dedicated to supporting veterans, service members and their families through a wide range of resources, programs and opportunities. The MVRC provides a welcoming space for military-connected students and their families to connect, hold meetings or study sessions, and relax with complimentary snacks and refreshments.

Special programs include the Council on Veteran Services, the student Veterans Club, veteran-focused events and the Veteran Mentorship Program, a unique peer-to-peer online initiative designed specifically for student veterans.

�� also offers a variety of academic opportunities tailored to military-connected students:

Military Benefits 101, an online course for first-year and transfer students, provides an overview of military education benefits, support resources and services.
A minor in military leadership, which introduces students to the fundamentals of military science and leadership principles.
Degree opportunities that align with many military occupations and experiences.
Online certificates in areas such as project management, organizational performance, organizational development, strategic leadership and workforce development, all designed to align with the interests and career goals of military-connected students.

In addition, Career Services supports veteran students in the biannual �� Career Fair by connecting students with employers who value their military experience and providing guidance on employment challenges and resources. All military-connected students are encouraged to participate.

�� offers both Army and Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps opportunities as well, which help student cadets develop the leadership, managerial, organizational and effective communication skills needed to succeed.

Army ROTC Northwoods Battalion students learn leadership theory, time management skills, basic soldier skills, map reading and other skills from experienced Army leaders. �� also has a long-standing agreement with the Air Force ROTC program at University of St. Thomas, Detachment 410, in St. Paul — a unique agreement among Wisconsin universities.

Cadets in the Army and Air Force Reserve Officers’ Training Corps develop the leadership, managerial, organizational and effective communication skills needed to succeed. �� offers both Army and Air Force ROTC opportunities, in which students earn their college degrees while completing classes and training during the academic year.

Cadets who complete the ROTC program and earn their degrees are commissioned as second lieutenants and begin their careers in the Army, Army National Guard, Army Reserves, Air Force or Space Force. More than 100 lieutenants have commissioned from the �� Army ROTC Northwoods Battalion since the program began in 2005. There are currently 65 cadets at St. Thomas, Detachment 410.

Recognized by MilitaryFriendly.com for more than 15 years, �� was designated a Gold Status Military Friendly® School for 2024-2025 and a 2024-2025 Military Friendly Spouse School. It also was named a 2024 Best for Vets College by Military Times, ranking No. 1 among Wisconsin public universities and in the Top 15 in the Midwest.

MS3 Cadet Mason Louwagie, Army ROTC

Since the beginning of high school, Army ROTC MS3 third-year Cadet Mason Louwagie wanted to either play football or join the military in college. “I didn’t end up playing football, so I joined the military. I chose �� for its great School of Engineering. I liked the polytechnic aspect and it is semi-close to home,” said Louwagie, of St. Joseph, Minnesota.

Louwagie, a junior and dual major in mechanical engineering and manufacturing engineering, is Company Executive Officer this semester, assisting the Company Commander with organizational items and planning, and creating and teaching ROTC labs to younger cadets.

“Balancing ROTC labs with schoolwork, which is extensive as I am taking 18 credits this semester, has helped me develop better time management and organizational skills,” he said. “ROTC leadership training has helped me become more organized. There are quite a few files, presentations, debriefs and After Action Reports (AAR) to organize in a way that others can easily access.”

Next summer, Louwagie and other third-year cadets will enter Cadet Summer Training (CST), a month-long camp at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He will graduate in fall 2027 and feels he has many options open for his career, whether on active duty or in the National Guard, mechanical or manufacturing engineering, or a mix between the military and engineering.

“I’m not sure where God will guide my life, but I hopefully am setting myself up for success,” he said. “I hope to use my degrees to develop or improve something that can make an impact on the way we live our lives.”

Cadet Fourth Class Vincent Moua, a first-year mechanical engineering student at ��, is a Foxtrot Training Flight Member at University of St. Thomas Air Force ROTC, Detachment 410.

Moua chose �� because of its connection with St. Thomas’ program. His plan is to be either a mechanical engineer within the Air Force, working on aircraft ignitions and making system improvements, or a pilot, as was his father.

“My dad flew an F-16. He sparked my idea to join the Air Force,” said Moua, of La Crosse. His father, Captain Thao Moua, 32nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, is now an officer and communication company commander in the Wisconsin National Guard.

Moua is in two training courses at St. Thomas – Heritage and Values, an Air Force studies course, and a leadership lab – covering lessons and projects in teamwork, communication and critical thinking.

“Being able to communicate clearly with people, whether in the military or in a team setting, is important. You have to be able to press deeper and connect with people – to look at the individual and not at the group as a whole,” Moua said. “The courses also train you to plan out actions and to be prepared for anything.”

As you navigate our Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) website, you will find most of the general information regarding our program. The website has been designed to answer any questions you may have.

If you are considering a career in the Army or just want to gain some practical leadership skills and experience, here is what you should know about our program.

Small classes help you grow as an individual and gain camaraderie with your fellow students.
Our courses are taught by ROTC faculty and staff; proven leaders and military professionals.
ROTC faculty will guide and coach you, working with junior and senior cadets who serve as mentors to students beginning the program.
There is no military obligation to take our 100- and 200-level courses.
If you continue our program into the 300- and 400-levels of courses, there is a military obligation. This obligation varies based on many factors.
If you complete our program and receive your diploma, you earn the privilege of wearing the gold bar of a second lieutenant.
Regardless of what path you choose, you will be able to speak well in public, take charge when necessary, get things done through others, and be counted on to watch over the safety and well-being of those under your leadership.

Serving as a seasonal leasing specialist at The Vue at Pinnacle Park and The Lafayette in Fitchburg, �� real estate property management senior William Boyce completed his summer cooperative experience with Weidner Apartment Homes.

“What I love most about the REPM major is the variety in real estate, as well as the core concepts that are found in every avenue of the field. I know various professionals who have pivoted in different directions in real estate without having to restart their career ladder,” Boyce said.

The Lafayette is a luxury property with two buildings, less than five years old, and offers modern finishes. The Vue is comprised of five buildings and has more traditional home colors. The residences are both located near nature reserves, Boyce said.

Weidner Apartment Homes, headquartered in Kirkland, Washington, was recognized on the National Multi-Family Housing Council ��. 2024 50 Largest Apartment Owners List as the 12th largest private owner of apartments in the U.S. It represents more than 315 multifamily residential communities, with more than 72,000 units in 13 states and Canada.

Boyce, of DeForest, plans to graduate this December and is interested in a career in real estate appraisal. As a Senior Airman in the Wisconsin Air National Guard, he is set to begin Airman Leadership School in 2026, which he’ll complete before beginning his real estate career.

“�� . Veteran Services has made utilizing my benefits a breeze. I have heard of other airmen at different schools having little to no help putting their benefits to use. Thanks to Veteran Services, I will be able to graduate debt- and stress-free,” said Boyce, adding, “Brian Hackner, military education benefits coordinator, has been a huge help.”

How do you hope to make an impact in your field?

I hope to impact the real estate property management field by changing the stigma of property managers. Most people only recall their worst memories of moving out of a property they lived in. I hope to create some lasting memories.

The “Love Notes” program at Weidner is a good example of this and is something I would like to take with me. They send notes to their residents to show how much they appreciate them, and they help inspire community.

What were your main roles as an intern with Weidner Apartment Homes?

My main role was helping in the leasing office. I completed tours, answered phones, and responded to emails from prospects and residents.

We started our day with an hour of cleaning the property. This would include wiping down windows, vacuuming common areas and inspecting vacant units. Before tours or when inspecting vacant units, we would bring a “sparkle kit” to clean the place up. A little difference in cleanliness can go a long way.

Every day is different in property management. I had random projects, like removing a dozen tires from the property to Discount Tire for proper waste disposal. I also repainted the number lines for an underground parking garage! I had a lot of fun doing that.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoy charts and graphs. Our community director had all the reports for the property finances. Through these numbers, you can see everything that is happening at the property. The documents would go over accounts receivable, accounts payable, vacancies and more.

The regional directors have already forecasted the year based on current market trends and past years. My classes in Investment Analysis and ICT Problem Solving were beneficial for this. I was already familiar with all the terminology thanks to my property management classes. We had practiced the calculations that would go into these numbers as well.

What was challenging about your internship, and how did you face those challenges?

The most challenging part of my internship was learning the way Weidner Apartment Homes’ properties operate. This was my third internship in the industry, and it made me realize that every property – even if part of a larger company – is managed it in its own way.

I worked at The Heights in Menomonie as a community assistant. This role was heavily based around community events, marketing and cleaning. At Guardian Property Management, I was an administrative assistant, where I responded to resident questions and processed lease renewals.

How will your courses and experiences at Stout help you make an impact in your career?

I know for certain that my courses and experiences at Stout will help me make an impact in the industry. Stout ��. REPM major is unique and gave me a head start compared to a new hire unfamiliar with the industry.

By far, my favorite class has been Real Estate Appraisal. I really liked the way the class was structured, and it was a lot more numbers-based. Learning the different approaches to valuation and practicing them in and out of the classroom was exciting for me.

That said, I have loved all of my Property Management classes. In Real Estate Ethics, we had a debate at the end of the semester, and during our Capstone, we toured a property in the Twin Cities to create a management plan for.

Career Services’ annual First Destination Report declared that 100% of recent REPM graduates are employed or furthering their education within six months of graduation, and have an average starting salary of $58,000. �� . real estate property management program is one of only a handful of its kind in the U.S.

University of Wisconsin-Stout ��. long tradition of serving the military community has once again earned the university high honors as a Military Friendly® School.

Its silver designation through the program marked the 16th consecutive year that �� has been named a Military Friendly® School because of its efforts to offer service and support to meet the needs of military students.

�� is one of only five Wisconsin institutions to rank on the Military Friendly® small public university list this year. It was also named a Military Spouse Friendly School. The 2025-26 Military Friendly® School list was published in the April issue of G.I. Jobs Magazine.

Retired Army Lt. Col. Brian Hackner, military education benefits coordinator with �� . Veteran Services, said the repeated achievement helps draw veterans’ attention to the university. As a polytechnic university, “There are a lot of programs we have that match with the experience and careers that the military students have,” Hackner said. Fields such as engineering, manufacturing, information technology, supply chain management and administration are designed to parallel military jobs and roles and recognize the skills, leadership and technical expertise that are gained through military service, he said.

“�� . focus on applied learning resonates with veteran and military students, because of the many similarities to their military experience,” added Veterans Services Consultant Christopher Engen, a retired U.S. Army colonel.

The Military Friendly® designation stems from a combination of other factors in addition to the university ��. academic programs, Engen added.

“First and foremost, we help them get the most out of their military and veteran education benefits,” he said. From the Federal G.I. Bill® to Department of Defense tuition assistance and Wisconsin National Guard tuition grants, the office helps eligible students access nine federal and state military education benefits.

Veteran Services also serves as a one-stop shop for all the military students’ needs, connecting them with other campus services and providing a sense of camaraderie, Engen added.

Each year, as part of the Military Friendly® program, the university undergoes a rigorous evaluation of areas impacting military students, including academic policies and compliance; financial aid and tuition assistance; campus and student support services; student retention and outcomes; military-friendly campus culture; military-related community engagement and partnerships; flexibility for active-duty military students; institutional commitment and military friendly leadership; and training for faculty and staff.

The Military Friendly ranking isn’t the only such honor that �� has earned repeatedly. Last November, Military Times again placed �� on its 2024 Best for Vets Colleges list. �� ranked first among public universities or colleges in Wisconsin, was 12th in the Midwest, and 112th among the 304 schools nationwide that qualified.

�� is also ranked among the Best Schools for Veterans by U.S. News & World Report.

�� Veteran Services exists to serve military-affiliated students, including veterans, current servicemembers (both active and reserve) and the children and spouses of current or former members of the U.S. military.

Hackner explains that his office provides a wide range of services to these students. They advise students about federal and state military education benefits, assist them in applying for those benefits, certify their enrollment as well as coordinate with internal and external agencies. Veteran Services also works to ensure military students’ success by building a sense of community among military-affiliated students, provides counseling and resources, offers a Veterans Mentorship Program, and operates a Military and Veterans Resources Center in Bowman Hall. Veteran Services also provides resources for faculty and staff and supports on- and off-campus partnerships for military affiliated students.

Veteran Scholarships

Scholarship Opportunities for Military Affiliated Students

The following scholarships administered by the Stout University Foundation require or consider military affiliation as a veteran, current service member, or son/daughter of a veteran or servicemember. Interested students may apply by submitting the general application form along with one letter of recommendation. When applying applicants may list specific scholarships; however, it is not necessary as students who apply are considered for all Stout Foundation scholarships if they meet the donor criteria.

John Leon Abrams Memorial Endowed Scholarship

Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity has established a scholarship in memory of John Leon Abrams, a 1962 Stout graduate and fraternity brother killed in Vietnam in 1967. He was a member of the Naval Seawolves Helicopter Squadron, an elite group formed specifically to assist SEAL and Special Forces. John and his three-man crew were killed flying the lead helicopter while engaging ground forces in the Mekong Delta region of Vietnam. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time plastics engineering major of sophomore, junior or senior status with a 2.5 or higher GPA, demonstrated financial need and who exhibits leadership in student activities. U.S. military involvement is also required as listed: member of �� ROTC, member of the U.S. military, veteran of the U.S. military, member of a state National Guard, a veteran of a state National Guard, a son or daughter of a member or veteran of the U.S. Military or state National Guard.

Eugene W. Else Memorial Scholarship

Family and friends have established a scholarship in memory of Eugene W. Else. A lifelong resident of the Watertown area, Eugene always encouraged his children to further their education, give back to the community, and appreciate the sacrifices made by those serving our country in the military. The award is given to a student who is a military veteran, with a preference given to a Watertown High School graduate with a GPA of 3.0 or above and attends �� as a full-time student who attends classes on campus.

Troeller Family Scholarship

The Troeller Family Scholarship is in appreciation of all �� faculty. Specifically, in honor of Harold H. Halfin, a Stout State College Professor, veteran, and mentor.

Professor Halfin dedicated his career to encouraging students to develop not just vocational skills but life skills. This scholarship is for any student that majors in Industrial Education or Engineering, in addition to be an active duty, retired or honorably discharged military service member, or the son or daughter of any active duty, retired or honorably discharged military service member. The candidate may be from any branch of the military.

John G. Vranak Ph.D. Memorial Endowed Scholarship

John Vranak was a former director of the product development concentration in industrial technology at ��. He passed away March 14, 2006. He began his career at Stout as a student in 1967 and earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in industrial education in 1971 and 1972. He then took a teaching position at Arrowhead High School in Hartland, Wis., where he remained for seven years before returning to Stout in 1979 to teach in the Graphic Communications Department. Vranak was known for his knowledge of and skill at teaching classes in architectural/construction drawing and site engineering. The scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior construction major who demonstrates the values and work ethics professed by Dr. Vranak. Although military service is not a requirement, preference is given to a student with prior U.S. military service.

Donald & Ann Ritzinger Zittelman Scholarship

Donald Arthur (BS '1955, MS '1956) and Ann Ritzinger Zittleman (1955) met and married while attending Stout Institute. Don took time out of his college education to serve in Japan in the Army as a heavy machinery mechanic during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged and returned to Stout to finish his bachelor's and master's degrees. Don taught in Allen Park, Michigan his entire career, where he helped to design the high school's Industrial Arts Program which was then used as a pattern for other area schools. Ann worked in hospitals as a Registered Dietician throughout her career. She was also a member of the Board of the Michigan Dietetic Association and a nutrition spokesperson on local TV. As proud Stout graduates, they rarely missed a class reunion, returning to Wisconsin each summer. Each was the first in their families to attend college, and they set an example for their children and grandchildren. This scholarship is for career-minded students at the undergraduate or graduate level in the areas of Dietetics, Technology Education, Engineering Technology, or Career & Technical Education. Applicants must have strong drive and financial need, a 3.0 GPA in the area of their field, and participation in a professional organization of their field.

They should have demonstrated leadership potential as evidenced by participation in student or community activities. Although military service is not a requirement, preference will be given to military veterans or family members of a veteran.

Third-Party Scholarships: Folds of Honor

Folds of Honor is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that offers educational scholarships to US military service members, first responders, and their spouses and children who have fallen or been disabled while serving our country and communities. Our educational scholarships cover college and post-graduate tuition, including master ��. degrees, doctorates, or professional programs. Funds for a second bachelor ��. degree or trade/technical program certification are also available.

VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship

The VFW Sport Clips Help A Hero Scholarship is a bi-annual award designed to assist service members, veterans, and select reservists pursuing education at accredited post-secondary institutions. With scholarship amounts of up to $5,000 per semester (limited to one award per family per semester), funds must be used strictly for tuition and fees and are paid directly to the school during the relevant semester. To be eligible, applicants must be U.S. citizens who are retired, honorably discharged, active duty, or members of the National Guard or Reserve; have completed Basic and follow-on training; and hold or have separated with a rank of E-5 or below. Demonstrated financial need and enrollment (or acceptance) in a VA-approved educational program are also required. The application windows open January 1–April 30 for fall, and August 1–November 15 for spring, with awards disbursed in August and January, respectively. To apply, veterans submit an application through the VFW during those windows, and eligible awards are sent directly to their accredited institution.

Folds of Honor Scholarship

Provides educational scholarships to spouses and children of service members who were killed or disabled in the line of duty. Awards are need-focused with light academic requirements and can be renewed annually.

Freedom Alliance Scholarship Fund

Supports college education for children of U.S. service members who were killed or severely wounded. The scholarship emphasizes service sacrifice over academic competition.

Scholarships for Military Children Program (Fisher House Foundation)

Awards annual scholarships to dependent children of active duty, reserve, guard, retired, or deceased service members. Requires an application, but eligibility is broadly based on military family status.

Heroes’ Legacy Scholarship

Provides scholarships to dependent children of service members who died or became disabled while serving after September 11, 2001. Academic merit is reviewed, but eligibility is rooted in the veteran ��. service.

ThanksUSA Scholarship

Offers financial support to spouses and dependent children of active-duty service members and veterans. Requires a short application and essay but has no extreme academic thresholds.

Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation

Provides renewable scholarships primarily to children of U.S. Marines and Navy Corpsmen. Awards are substantial and based on need, character, and academic effort rather than elite credentials.

Blinded Veterans Association – Kathern F. Gruber Scholarship

Available to spouses and dependent children of blinded veterans. Eligibility is based on family relationship, with academic performance considered secondarily.

Anchor Scholarship Foundation

Offers scholarships to spouses and children of U.S. Navy Surface Warfare personnel. Awards are high-value but limited to a specific military community.

University named 12th best in Midwest in new national rankings by Military Times

For veterans and active military students, �� is the best public university in Wisconsin and one of the best places in the U.S. to earn a higher education degree.

�� made the 2024 Best for Vets Colleges list, one of 304 in the country, announced on Nov. 4 by Military Times, ranking first among public universities or colleges in Wisconsin. Five of the 13 Universities of Wisconsin schools made the list. Overall, �� was 12th in the Midwest and 112th among the 304 schools that qualified.

“�� provides a welcoming and supportive environment that fosters academic success, personal growth and career readiness,” said retired Army Lt. Col. Brian Hackner, the university ��. military education benefits coordinator who oversees Veteran Services. “This goes a long way in helping military-connected students enhance their careers or transition seamlessly to the workforce, while their resilience, leadership and diverse perspectives enrich the campus community.”

This spring, �� received a gold designation as a Military Friendly® School for 2024-25 for its efforts in creating sustainable and meaningful education paths for members of the military community. It also was designated a Military Spouse Friendly School. This was the 16th year the university was named a Military Friendly School.

�� currently has 198 military and veteran students and 629 spouses and children. Of those, 366 are using educational benefits. The university ��. most recent First Destination report stated that 100% of veteran graduates were employed within six months of graduation.

�� . Military and Veteran Resource Center is a space dedicated to serving veterans, service members and their families with support resources, activities and opportunities. The MVRC is a place for military and veteran students and families to connect, hold meetings or study sessions, or relax with a complimentary snack and refreshment.

Other special programs include a Council on Veteran Services, a student Veterans Club, veteran-centered events and the Veteran Mentorship Program, a unique peer-to-peer online opportunity designed specifically for student veterans.

The Military Benefits 101 online course for first-year and transfer students provides an overview of military education benefits, support and services.
A minor in military leadership, where students gain basic concepts and principles of military science and the art of leadership.
Online certificates geared toward military-connected student interests, including project management - organizational performance, organizational development, strategic leadership and workforce development.

�� . Career Services and Veteran Services coordinate an annual Military and Veterans Career Expo. The expo focuses on addressing employment challenges, navigating resources, and connecting veteran and military students with employers who value their experience. All military-connected students are encouraged to attend.

The university ��. Memorial Wall to fallen service members, also known as the Hall of Heroes, currently honors 47 alumni, including one veteran of the Spanish-American War, six from World War I, 28 from World War II, two from the Korean War, eight from the Vietnam War, and two from the Iraq War.

�� is part of the Northwoods Battalion Army Reserve Officer ��. Training Corps with UW-Eau Claire and UW-River Falls.

Davis, an engineering technology graduate, supports efforts to improve lives at Minneapolis VA Medical Center

On the fourth floor of the Minneapolis Veterans Administration Medical Center, with a panoramic view of the Mississippi River valley, an office countertop holds a seemingly macabre collection of plastic models: A foot, hand and forearm, a heart, part of a spine, a lower jaw and other small, novel devices.

To the visitor, they’re just that. To their creator, Drew Davis, a 2007 �� engineering technology graduate, they are so much more. The 3D-printed models are re-creations of actual body parts of veterans, based on their MRIs and CT scans, that support their treatment and potentially improve their lives.

Davis and the VA ��. RECOVER team — Rehabilitation and Engineering Center for Optimizing Veteran Engagement and Reintegration — give hope to veterans.

Drew Davis, a 2007 �� alum, is an adaptive technology specialist whose work helps disabled and sick veterans at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. / ��

The collection in the high-tech, 3D print lab includes, for example: one veteran ��. aorta 3D-printed in exact detail that a doctor used to explain what had to be fixed; a half-scale head with a face that can be peeled away to reveal the extent of damaged bone. Davis uses software that takes CT and MRI data, captured by a radiologist, and generates 3D printable files of patient anatomy. He then optimizes the 3D printer settings to print bone and tissue structures.

The foot on the counter is part of an ankle-foot system designed for veterans with a prosthesis. The system is attached to the wearer at the end of the prosthetic socket. It slips into a 3D printed foot that is designed for a specific heel height.

The veteran can bring in a pair of shoes and walk away with a prosthetic foot for that shoe, which slips onto the ankle unit. Imagine a veteran walking into their home, taking off their outside shoes — foot included — and putting on their inside shoes, foot and all.

At RECOVER, veterans are included in the design process, whether it ��. a novel design or adaptive technology. “We take their input and make it real. Helping the veterans makes the job worth it,” Davis said.

Davis prints 3D models, in exacting detail, of veterans’ body parts based on CT scans and MRIs to help their doctors with diagnosis and treatment. / ��

Davis also has designed a system to test the strength and wear of a prosthetic socket, creating a pneumatic testing frame and using custom software to control the tests. “The goal is to come up with a test that can confirm the structural integrity of a traditionally fabricated socket. We can then apply those same tests to start to optimize materials and design of the sockets,” he said.

A wheelchair that makes veterans more mobile

On another floor at the VA hospital, Davis enters a windowless room with an assortment of wheelchairs. One of them is special: A prototype of a manual, mobile, standing wheelchair. Davis sits down, presses a button at the end of an arm with his thumb and the chair slowly rises to a standing position.

Then, he rolls forward like he wants to get something from a high shelf. Think of the many more things people in wheelchairs could do if they could move and stand. “It would help empower veterans,” he said.

Davis, who has worked at the VA for more than two years, helped design and oversees the manufacture of the wheelchair. The project goes back 10 years, but with his work it has advanced to user testing in Minneapolis and Palo Alto, Calif.

“That ��. the major reason I’m here. I saw that technology and wanted to be part of it,” said Davis, who previously worked as a project engineer with Stratasys, which makes 3D printers. The standing wheelchair includes 3D-printed parts. If successful, it too could be licensed for commercial production.

Along with the 3D lab, Davis works in the machine shop. “We’re more of a hacker space. It ��. a really cool job, the culmination of my career experience,” he said.

He also supports the design engineers with TTAP — the VA Technology Transfer Program.

“TTAP is for ideas, devices and therapies that come from anyone in the VA network who wants to develop them. We will apply our experience and skills to help get the idea through industrial design, functional design and design for manufacturing,” he said.

Davis’ engineering technology degree included an emphasis in plastics. Seventeen years ago, 3D printing was fairly new technology, but he saw its potential. Once, he was two hours late for a date with his future wife, Jillian McDowell Davis, a 2005 alum, when he lost track of time while 3D-printing in a lab.

For his senior capstone, he was the only person who 3D-printed his project — a crank arm for a bicycle pedal. His career in engineering and 3D printing has been cycling forward ever since.

Veteran Killy Kitzmann was an active-duty Navy Fleet Marine Force Corpsman, Petty Officer 3rd Class from 2013 to 2018. He served two tours to Iraq.

When Kitzmann began his graduate degree at ��, he made earning his degree his job. He earned his master's in clinical mental health counseling on May 4, along with 1,037 graduates.

He will work in mental health counseling in the Twin Cities, with a focus on the substance abuse population.

How has your �� education changed you?

It helped me discover the kind of person that I want to be and to continue pushing myself to be better.

I feel more prepared now than during any aspect of my undergraduate. I feel that leaving this program will be setting me up for success in every aspect of the profession.

What stands out about your �� experience?

The professors. By having the ability to connect with them on a personal level as well as professionally, I was given an opportunity to learn life skills outside of counseling.

These are professors who actually care about their students and aren’t focused on the letters behind their names. They care about the content and connection that education can provide.

I personally feel that all professors and educators should have the same approach to teaching as our professors do in this program. Without them, the world would be a lesser place.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

Learning how to navigate my own self while also trying to become a competent clinician in mental health was challenging. It was something that I did not expect, and when it started to happen I began to notice more and more about myself. Specifically, while in the Treatment Planning course, I began to examine why I do what I do, and that exploration was draining.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I’m most proud of the person that I have become in the last two years. I wasn’t who I am now, and I’ve gained a perspective on life that has left me a better person. The biggest thing is that this program has allowed me to constantly keep my personal inventory and keep myself in check.

For the 15th year, �� has been named a Military Friendly® School for its efforts in creating sustainable and meaningful education paths for members of the military community.

�� received a gold designation as a Military Friendly School, leveling up from its silver designation for 2022-23 and 2023-24.

It also was designated a Military Spouse Friendly School.

Veteran Services

�� welcomes all veterans, military service members and their families.

�� has approximately 400 military-affiliated students, who include veterans, current members of the U.S. military (active and reserve) and eligible family members. The university ��. most recent First Destination report stated that 100% of veteran graduates were employed within six months of graduation.

“We’re very excited about the gold designation because it's a good testament to the quality of programs and services we offer at �� to military-connected students,” said retired Army Lt. Col. Brian Hackner, military education benefits coordinator with ��'s Veteran Services.

“The Military Friendly® School designation tells veterans that Stout really supports them and cares about their education. They are relevant and wanted at Stout. And even more special is the Military Spouse designation because it shows we care about veterans and their whole family,” he said, noting that 50 to 75 military spouses are supported by Veteran Services.

Military & Veteran Resource Center

The Military and Veteran Resource Center (MVRC) is a dedicated on-campus space for veterans, service members and their families.

Veteran Services collects data and submits a survey annually to participate in the Military Friendly® rankings.

�� is among 243 schools in the nation that received the gold designation. More than 1,800 schools participated in the 2024-25 survey. Ranking criteria include retention, graduation, employment and loan default rates among students, especially veterans. The list of Military Friendly® schools will be published in a special feature of G.I. Jobs Magazine.

Last November, Military Times ranked �� first among public universities or colleges in Wisconsin on its 2023 Best for Vets list. Overall, �� was 24th in the Midwest and 151st among the 325 schools that qualified nationally.

A Military and Veterans Career Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, at the Memorial Student Center. Hosted by �� . Career Services and Veteran Services, the expo focuses on addressing employment challenges, navigating resources, and connecting veteran and military students with employers who value their experience. All military-connected students are encouraged to attend.

University Theatre students will perform the award-winning musical “Dogfight,” April 5-13. Set in San Francisco on Nov. 21, 1963, it is the story of Vietnam veteran Marine Corporal Eddie Birdlace and his flashback of the eve of his deployment, when he and other young Marines plan to celebrate their last night of freedom with a bit of debauchery and play a game they call a “dogfight.”

Jacob Martin completed his master ��. online at �� while serving in the Army Reserve, 753rd Quartermaster Company unit out of Green Bay.

He earned his M.S. in information and communication technologies from �� on Dec. 16, along with 526 graduates.

Martin works in information systems at Pierce Manufacturing and may choose to stay on after graduation or take a different path in his military career.

“Stout has allowed me to put my military career front and center, accommodating when needed,” he said.

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

�� has prepared me well. I can honestly say that the Stout team has been very constructive, accommodating and all-in-all, great.

The courses have trained me for the roles I will be in, and the coursework has been a steppingstone for me in my career.

In one of my courses, I worked on server maintenance and upgrades. A couple of months later, my employer needed assistance with a 2016 Windows server. Having the knowledge from the course assisted me in general navigation that I wouldn’t have had otherwise.

At this stage in my life, there are a lot more commitments that I need to invest myself fully into. This program pressured me into learning how to organize my time and thoughts so that everything that needs to be completed, is completed.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

I believe most can relate to the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. My life was a routine of items that needed to be completed. COVID tossed a wrench into this clockwork, and my standard daily tasks changed drastically.

The other challenge was the military. While I was not deployed, there were training dates I was asked to take on short notice. Some of these trainings were over a month-long, conflicting with my schedules.

Communication is the key to solving most of life ��. problems.

Getting to know your friends, co-workers, classmates and anyone else in your life is through honest communication. Everyone has troubles and surprises that come up, and they are relatable among us. Explaining these challenges to others who depend on you as soon as you know is the key to gaining support and completing your goals.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I’m proud of being part of a small group that has earned their graduate degree. There is a great sense of accomplishment that I feel after completing a long and difficult journey. With that, there is pride going into the next part of my life.

I’m appreciative of those who pushed me to get here and am looking forward to continuing my journey and paying it back.

�� also 24th best in Midwest in new national rankings by Military Times

For veterans and active military students, �� is the best public university in Wisconsin and one of the best places in the U.S. to earn a higher education degree.

�� made the 2023 Best for Vets list, one of 325 in the country announced Monday, Nov. 6, by Military Times. Veterans Day is Saturday, Nov. 11.

�� ranked first among public universities or colleges in Wisconsin. Six of the 13 Universities of Wisconsin schools made the list. Overall, �� was 24th in the Midwest and 151st among the 325 schools that qualified.

“It is an honor, and I am very proud �� made this list. It is a testament to the quality of the veteran-connected students we have and the support they get from their families,” said retired Army Lt. Col. Brian Hackner, the university ��. military education benefits coordinator who oversees Veteran Services.

Earlier this year, �� received a silver designation as a Military Friendly® school for 2023-24. In September, �� also was No. 29 among Midwest universities in the Best Colleges for Veterans ranking by U.S. News & World Report.

�� has 236 veterans and current military students. In the university ��. new First Destination report, 100% of veterans who graduated in fall 2021 and spring 2022 were employed within six months.

Support for veterans

Special services for veterans at �� include a peer-to-peer Veteran Mentorship Program, a Military and Veteran Resource Center, a Council on Veteran Services and a student Veterans Club.

An initiative launched during 2022 is an online course, Military Benefits 101, for first-year and transfer students who are military-affiliated. The course provides an overview of military education benefits along with information about support and services available at ��.

�� also offers a minor in military leadership.

�� is part of the Northwoods Battalion Army Reserve Officer ��. Training Corps with UW-Eau Claire and UW-River Falls.

On Friday, Nov. 10, �� will add two alumni to its Memorial Wall, or Hall of Heroes, in the Memorial Student Center. They are the 46th and 47th former students to be recognized for giving their life while serving.
