The Arbor Day Foundation has recognized �� as a Tree Campus for its dedication to enhancing community well-being through tree education, investment and community engagement.

The recognition is the latest chapter in the university ��. long-running dedication to sustainability, which includes being named a national Green Ribbon school in 2024 by the U.S. Department of Education, earning bronze-level designation as a Bike Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists, and being a charter signatory of the Carbon Commitment, a higher-education pledge for carbon neutrality. In recent years �� has also made major investments in solar panels, LED lighting and other upgrades that are estimated to be saving hundreds of thousands of dollars in energy costs annually.

And while trees may be low-tech compared with photovoltaic panels, they also have a tangible impact: Trees can lower the energy cost of campus facilities by providing shade cover, reducing extreme heat, improving air quality and boosting physical health benefits for students and staff. In addition, trees improve students’ mental and cognitive health, provide an appealing aesthetic for campuses, and create shaded areas for gathering and studying. 

“Trees have the power to inspire learning and improve well-being,” said Michelle Saulnier, Vice President of Programs at the Arbor Day Foundation, a global nonprofit with a mission to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. “By growing campus green spaces, forward-thinking higher education leaders like �� are cultivating vibrant learning communities that also benefit the greater environment.”

To earn Tree Campus recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation, colleges and universities must uphold five core standards including maintaining an advisory committee, setting a campus tree care plan, verifying annual investment in the tree care plan, celebrating Arbor Day, and creating a service-learning project aimed at engaging the student body.

“I was thrilled to hear that we received this designation,” �� Sustainability Manager Kadi Wright said. “It ��. rewarding to see our efforts recognized, and I look forward to continuing this work as part of the annual process.”

“Trees play a vital role in the college experience,” continued Wright, who holds a M.S. sustainable management degree from ��. “They offer shade and foster a connection to nature. Students were excited to learn that we were pursuing this designation.”

�� is now one of only six universities in the state of Wisconsin to have the Tree Campus designation.

Broadening the culture of sustainability

“The Tree Campus designation helps create a broader sustainability culture where sustainability is not just a commitment: It becomes something everyone shares responsibility for in everyday campus life and the student experience,” Wright said.

Much of the credit for fulfilling that responsibility, she added, should go to the campus facilities management and grounds teams for keeping trees healthy, growing and beautiful.

Arthur Kneeland, a senior lecturer in the biology department and co-chair of the Campus Exteriors Development Committee, took a lead role in preparing the Tree Campus application to the Arbor Day Foundation late last year.

“As we explored what was required, we quickly realized that we met the criteria easily,” Kneeland said. “Caring for our trees is in part managing the investment that we have made in this very important visual and emotional part of our campus. So, from a tree care perspective we were already doing everything that the Arbor Day Foundation wanted.”

As part of the process, 846 trees were tallied on campus last fall. “The trees have a tremendous positive impact on campus,” Kneeland said. “They provide shade in many places, reducing heat to buildings and people. They are also an important emotional component of campus life. People like trees – they make us feel happy and calm.”

Not only do trees contribute to shared outdoor spaces – such as the arboretum that encompasses the south lawn of the Memorial Student Center or the 3-acre outdoor classroom – but they contribute to the university ��. polytechnic identity as well, which focuses on applied learning beyond the classroom. �� students apply their studies in sustainability to capstone projects that benefit the environment. For example, students in the B.S. environmental science program as well as in the sustainability and geographic information systems (GIS) minor programs have worked on a number of projects mapping campus trees and conceptualizing what they should look like in the future, Kneeland said.

The annual campus Earth Week celebration, which this year will begin April 20, will also recognize �� . new Tree Campus status. In honor of Arbor Day, Kneeland will lead a Tree Tour on the south campus at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 23.

�� committed to clean energy, recycling

From installing solar panels to adding LED light fixtures, �� . focus on sustainability has brought both environmental and financial benefits.

In 2023, photovoltaic arrays were installed on both Jarvis Hall Technology Wing and the General Services Building, which generate 200 kilowatts and 114.4 kilowatts, respectively. The same project included upgraded LED lighting in multiple buildings; installing energy-saving destratification fans in Johnson Fieldhouse and the Multipurpose Room of the Sports and Fitness Center; and weatherizing buildings campuswide. The entire project is estimated to save �� more than $172,000 in energy costs each year. Four years earlier, a separate LED upgrade project created savings of about $89,000 annually.

In addition, LED retrofits to the dining area and kitchen in Merle M. Price Commons funded through the Stout Student Association Green Fee in 2024 are expected to generate $50,000 in energy savings over four years. Likewise, solar panel installed atop Price Commons in 2018 and 2021 have also generated more than $35,000 in energy savings. These savings directly impact students, who pay the fees that operate the buildings, while also reducing carbon dioxide emissions by hundreds of tons, said Darrin Witucki, Director of the Student Centers.

Student Green Fees have also helped pay for eco-friendly equipment, including an electric mower used on campus and two solar-powered trash compactors, which were placed outside Johnson Fieldhouse to prevent waste from overflowing and contaminating nearby recycling bins during busy times.

�� has been focused on reducing the amount of waste it produces as well. Last year, the university was a winner in the nationwide Campus Race to Zero Waste, a friendly competition that measures recycling and waste reduction on campuses. Over an eight-week period, �� students recycled an average of 23 pounds of waste each, earning Medium Campus Per Capita Recycling honors.

�� offers a B.S. in environmental science and a P.S.M. in conservation biology, as well as minors in environmental health and sustainability.

A sustainability project more than two years in the making was unveiled at �� on June 23, adding to the university ��. ongoing commitment to clean energy solutions and green transportation options.

Two electric vehicle charging stations, located in Lot 14, on the west side of Sorensen Hall, are now available for campus and community members and visitors.

The level two stations are part of the ChargePoint charging network and provide an opportunity for four electric or hybrid vehicles to charge simultaneously. They will be available for a charging fee of 35 cents per kilowatt hour, said Sustainability Manager Kadi Wright.

The project was made possible through the Stout Student Association (SSA) and its Sustainability Council, the Sustainability Office, the Campus Wide Energy Committee, Facilities Management and Parking Services.

Campus stakeholders who spoke at the unveiling were Chancellor Katherine Frank, Vice Chancellor Erik Guenard, Facilities Management Associate Director Zenon Smolarek, Wright and SSA representatives.

Collection Development Librarian Cory Mitchell and Smolarek demonstrated how to activate the stations, how individuals can access them, and where to find more information.

“This event may seem like a small celebration, but it represents something much larger – our institution ��. ongoing commitment to sustainability, innovation, and progress. Every initiative like this is part of a larger strategic plan that represents our goals, is aligned with our mission, and demonstrates our responsibility to the future,” Frank said.

As Wisconsin ��. ��, �� prepares students for the future, Frank said, adding that, “At Stout, education encompasses what happens both inside and outside of the classroom, studio, and laboratory. This means that our campus infrastructure should reflect our values as a polytechnic university: forward-thinking, applicable, and engaged with the issues of our time.”

Guenard agreed. “These new electric vehicle charging stations are more than a convenience – they’re a clear sign of our institution ��. evolving role in addressing climate change and promoting environmental responsibility. We’re not just talking about sustainability – we’re building it into the physical landscape of our college.

“Sustainability is a shared effort. It ��. championed by students who speak up for cleaner systems. It ��. maintained by operations teams who innovate behind the scenes. And it ��. strengthened by every person who chooses to walk, bike, carpool – or now – charge an electric vehicle right here on campus,” he said.

“We have completed numerous projects, both large and small, and this initiative is just one step toward making our campus more eco-friendly. I hope this project benefits many people and inspires further initiatives on our campus. Let ��. keep the momentum going and keep charging toward a more sustainable future,” said Haag, who credited Wright for her many contributions.

“Projects like this show that our campus is serious about turning ideas into action. We’ve had a lot of conversations over the years – about climate change, clean energy, and how we can do our part as a college community,” added SSA Vice President Chris Sander. “This is one of those moments where you can see progress being made. These stations aren’t just about cars – they’re about access, about future-forward thinking, and about reducing our impact. It ��. also a sign that when students, staff, and leadership work together, good things happen.”

As a Charter Signatory of the Carbon Commitment, �� has a commitment to becoming carbon-neutral by 2050. The university incorporates sustainability into its academic programs and operations, including a multibuilding solar and energy efficiency upgrades project.

The U.S. Department of Education named �� a national Green Ribbon school, based on its long-term and ongoing efforts to infuse sustainability into operations and the classroom and to create a campuswide culture that advances environmental initiatives.

The Green Ribbon award, a one-time honor, is given annually to a select number of schools, including early learning centers, elementary, secondary and post-secondary institutions. In Wisconsin, �� was the only university to be recognized in 2024.

�� was re-designated as a bronze Bike Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists through 2028.

University Recreation ��. Stout Adventures offer StoutBikes, a bike share program through which students can rent a bike for a week, semester or over the summer. There are four bike fix stations around campus, a bike shelter at the University Library, bike lockers at CKTO residence hall and Jarvis Hall, as well as bike racks located all around campus.

Surplus Property helps keep more than 100 tons of materials out of area landfills each year to improve university sustainability and profitability. And the campuswide compost and recycling collection system results in a 48% decrease in landfill waste.

Last fall, �� hosted the Universities of Wisconsin Sustainability Annual Meeting, where sustainability leaders, faculty, staff, students, alumni and external partners gathered to collaborate on environmental topics and share resources, ideas and knowledge to develop strategic goals and support sustainability efforts on UW campuses, as well as career and economic development across the state.

Earth Week events, coordinated through the Sustainability Office and various student organizations, including UW-Sprout Campus Garden volunteer day and apple tree planting, thrift swap, plant sale, campus cleanup and an Earth Day Bash at the University Library.

More than 80 off-campus students participated in this year ��. Spring Move-Out event, when the Sustainability Office, Waste Reduction Work Group, and campus volunteers helped to properly dispose and recycle approximately 360 items, including furniture, bed frames, grills, electronics and appliances. The office also worked with Chippewa Valley Habitat for Humanity to donate items in good condition. This event was funded by the City of Menomonie and the Stout Student Association.

Comprehensive initiatives on campus, classrooms, labs recognized with Green Ribbon, Energy Efficiency Excellence awards

�� can officially add a new “color” to its identity – green.

The U.S. Department of Education has named �� a national Green Ribbon school, based on its long-term and ongoing efforts to infuse sustainability into operations and the classroom and to create a campuswide culture that advances environmental initiatives.

The Green Ribbon award, a one-time honor, is given annually to a select number of schools, including early learning centers, elementary, secondary and post-secondary institutions. The 2024 winners are invited to a fall recognition ceremony in Washington, D.C. See a video announcing the winners and the list of awardees by state.

“�� is honored to receive the Green Ribbon award. This was possible due to our students' investments in Stout's sustainability efforts, our faculty who incorporate sustainability in their curriculum and applied research, and our staff who plan, implement and practice sustainability at the university on a daily basis,” said Erik Guenard, vice chancellor for Business, Finance and Administrative Services.

In Wisconsin, �� was the only university to be recognized in 2024.

�� has addressed sustainability in every aspect of operations. In the last 15 years, myriad efforts aimed at sustainability and reducing environmental impacts have resulted in campus emissions dropping by 33%, excluding emissions from commuting.

It was a charter signatory in 2007 of the American College & University Presidents’ Climate Commitment, now called the Second Nature Carbon Commitment, with the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.

Efforts to reach that goal have included several rooftop solar panel and LED lighting projects to reduce energy use and save money. The latest such project in 2023 will reduce emissions by 1,431 metric tons annually.

“As a member of the �� community since 2005, I have seen �� . commitment to sustainability grow stronger each year through cross-disciplinary applied projects and expanded internal and external partnerships; sustainability has become core to our polytechnic work,” said Glendalí Rodríguez, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.

“It is exciting to have the opportunity to celebrate these accomplishments, and as the university wraps up its 10-year long-range plan, we continue to prioritize sustainability into the future,” Rodriguez added.

In early April, �� also received a Focus on Energy statewide Energy Efficiency Excellence Award. �� was nominated by Xcel Energy, which partners in the award with other state utilities. Xcel Energy is part of �� . Career Services Partnership Program.

The university participates in Focus on Energy, Wisconsin's statewide energy efficiency and renewable resource program. Nearly $170,000 in incentives for completing energy efficiency projects is being reinvested, such as the planned installation of two electric vehicle charging stations.

Other campuswide “green” efforts include:

Incorporating sustainable practices into building construction and renovation
Switching in 2020 from coal to natural gas for campus energy to reduce emissions
Maintaining a three-acre outdoor classroom with natural habitat
Operating a campus garden, UW-Sprout, to provide locally grown and healthy food options to students, staff and University Dining Services
A campuswide waste reduction system, with recycling and composting bins
Promoting sustainable transportation options, such as bike rental, helping �� earn a national Bike Friendly campus rating, and rideshare programs
Reusing and recycling campus surplus items, saving more than 215,000 pounds of material from landfills in 2023.

�� has most often placed first or second among Universities of Wisconsin schools and in the top 50 nationally in the Campus Race to Zero Waste recycling competition.

In 2010, �� became a tobacco-free campus after a ban was supported in two Stout Student Association student referendums.

Total package: Students earn two firsts, third in international sustainability challenges

Students from five majors collaborate to reimagine packaging

Student government, which has instituted a Green Fee and Alternative Transportation Fee, and student organizations have committed more than $500,000 to sustainability-related projects since 2014.

The university has a Sustainability Office and seven committees on sustainability.

“We are honored to accept this award,” said Sustainability Manager Kadi Wright. “Putting together the application was truly a team effort as many departments and individuals assisted. The application highlights the wide range of sustainable changes and progress occurring on our campus and the many departments, programs and initiatives involved.”

Academically, �� offers a master ��. degree in sustainable management, a bachelor ��. in environmental science, and a minor and two certificates in sustainability.

Professors and students conduct water quality-based research through the federally funded LAKES research experience for undergraduates, Center for Limnological Research and Rehabilitation, and Freshwater Collaborative of Wisconsin grants.

Curriculum that educates about and promotes sustainability is woven throughout many academic programs, such as engineering, construction management, packaging and design.

Three science, one art and one master ��. degree option boost in-demand array of bachelor ��., master ��. to 80

Students who are ready to build careers in science or art, or pursue a cross-discipline master ��. degree, have new and in-demand options at ��.

The Universities of Wisconsin Board of Regents has given its stamp of approval to five new academic programs at ��, Wisconsin ��. ��. They are:

Bachelor of Science, biology
Bachelor of Science, chemistry
Bachelor of Science, physics
Bachelor of Fine Arts, illustration
Master of Professional Studies, design, entrepreneurship and sustainability.

The programs, which were approved April 5 and begin in the fall, capitalize on �� . existing academic offerings, labs/studios and experienced faculty in those fields. The additions bring the number of undergraduate majors to 57 and Graduate Studies to 23, along with a specialist degree and doctorate degree.

“I am proud of �� faculty and staff that are working hard to continue to adapt and expand �� . polytechnic offerings to meet student needs and the needs of the workforce,” said Glendalí Rodríguez, provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.

�� graduates are in demand. A new report found that 99% of �� 2022-23 graduates were employed soon after earning their degree and had a record average starting salary of $58,000, the best among higher education institutions in west-central Wisconsin.

In science, the three new degrees are built on the foundations of concentrations that have been offered for many years within the applied science bachelor ��. program. By elevating the concentrations to majors, the university is meeting student and industry demand with more focused career paths.

For example, �� has approximately 60 students already in the biology concentration. A prehealth sciences track focuses on post-graduate professional studies, such as medical school. A recent �� alum graduated from Harvard Medical School.

“The new degrees augment the existing program array in the science disciplines at ��,” Rodríguez said. “We offer high-quality, challenging academic programs that influence and respond to a changing society.

Pre-Health Sciences Pathways

Prepare for medical school and other advanced health care degrees in �� . pre-health sciences pathway programs.

“For example, many students studying physics are double-majoring in engineering, computer science or mathematics. This new major creates value-added credentials and experience and minimally increases the number of credits needed because of the significant overlap,” Rodríguez said.

Nationally and within Wisconsin, job opportunities in biology, chemistry and physics are expected to grow 5% to 8% in the next decade.

�� . Jarvis Hall Science Wing, which opened in 2010, features state-of-the-art labs that support applied learning and research opportunities for first-year to senior students. They include the Cadaver Lab, Rajiv and Swati Lall Microbiology Lab, and Biotechnology Lab.

In art, the new illustration degree builds on the School of Art and Design ��. six other B.F.A. programs.

Illustration builds skills in drawing, painting, printmaking, comics and other areas of art and design. Graduates can expect to find work in industries such as advertising, publishing, entertainment and as self-employed artists and consultants.

“The B.F.A. in illustration brings together artistic excellence and applied, problem-solving skills inherent to the practical design industry,” Rodríguez said. “The courses will bring clarity to complex ideas, communicates stories and explore new and creative ways of analyzing and presenting information applicable across multiple professional disciplines.”

�� . School of Art and Design remains the largest in the Upper Midwest, serving approximately 1,300 students. The program array extends to Graduate Studies with a Master of Fine Arts in design, which includes options in nine focus areas.

In Graduate Studies, the design, entrepreneurship and sustainability online master ��. aligns with industry demand for more professionals with skills in sustainability and with the university ��. ongoing efforts to operate more sustainably.

The program will help graduates advance their careers in fields such as management, entrepreneurship, education, engineering and government. Jobs requiring “green skills” are growing by 8% a year.

Courses will cover design, leadership and business management, including a capstone class that will enable students to synthesize the skills they have learned to create a research-based project.

�� also offers an M.S. sustainable management collaborative degree.

�� . largest solar photovoltaic array to date has been installed at Jarvis Hall Technology Wing, part of a multibuilding solar and energy efficiency upgrades project.

Contracted under Trane Inc., Eagle Point Solar of Dubuque, Iowa, recently installed 560 VSUN solar panels mounted on individually ballasted racking on the roof of the Technology Wing, which has a 24,160-square-foot high roof and a 14,801-square-foot low roof.

The panels will supply 200 kilowatts to Jarvis Hall Tech Wing and adjacent buildings. VSUN is a global company providing high-performance solar modules for reliable green power generation.

“Components of the system to support the solar panel will be on display at ground level outside Jarvis Hall Science Wing,” said Senior Facilities Officer Justin Utpadel. “We intend to provide educational information at the viewing location to provide students, staff and visitors with details about the project and how it benefits our campus and the environment.”

The display and information are still to be designed and determined.

Jarvis Hall Technology and Science wings house labs and classrooms for College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management programs, as well as a greenhouse and the Math Teaching and Learning Center. More than 1,000 students have hands-on learning opportunities in these buildings each year.

The university ��. General Services Building received solar panels this past week, which will supply 114.4 kilowatts to that building and adjacent buildings. “For reference, the system can power 10 to 20 average homes per day depending on season and weather,” explained Engineering Specialist Josh Kohnke.

As part of the project, upgraded LED lighting was installed in Applied Arts, Harvey Hall, Jarvis Hall and the Sports and Fitness Center, saving an estimated 1,274,449 kilowatt-hours. Destratification fans, which will provide an even greater reduction in energy usage, were installed in Johnson Fieldhouse and the Multipurpose Room of the Sports and Fitness Center; and building envelope weatherization improvements are planned for 22 campus buildings.

The engineering design report determined the project will reduce campus annual electric energy purchases by 9% and natural gas usage by 2%. It is expected to save �� approximately $172,187 annually. Payback on the cost is expected in about 16 years.

The savings will be measured, verified and guaranteed by the Energy Service Company. Franklin Energy, a conservation consultant that delivers energy efficiency programs for more than 60 utility and government partners across the U.S. and Canada, reviewed the proposal.

Sustainability Manager Kadi Wright is excited about the project. “It will decrease our energy consumption and continue our work of shifting to renewable energy,” she said.

As a Charter Signatory of the Carbon Commitment, the project will help �� . commitment to being carbon-neutral by 2050, decreasing the university ��. carbon emissions by 1,431 metric tons annually.

“We are committed to neutralizing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and this project is a step in that direction,” Wright added.

The budget is estimated at $2,767,000. Construction is expected to be completed in March 2024.

The project was approved by the Wisconsin State Building Commission last summer, part of a $71 million approval for key projects across the state to modernize infrastructure and to make sure buildings operate efficiently and safely.

A previous energy project, completed in the spring of 2021, added 122 solar panels to the existing 32 panels on the rooftop of Merle M. Price Commons, which houses the main University Dining facility.

The 145 solar panels, with 59.6 kilowatts, generate about 8% of the building ��. energy needs and cover 25% of its roof. The project was funded thanks to $150,000 in student Green Fees, a student campus sustainability initiative.

The university switched from coal to natural gas as its main source of campus heat in March 2020.

“The last few years that we burned coal, we burned approximately 1,200 to 1,400 tons per year. Back when we used coal as a primary winter fuel, we burned 3,000 to 4,000 tons per year,” Kohnke said. “With natural gas omitting roughly 50% less carbon dioxide than coal, this project reduced emissions by an estimated 1,716 to 5,720 tons.”

A multibuilding energy conservation project at �� has been approved by the Wisconsin State Building Commission, part of a $71 million approval for key projects across the state.

The project will provide a 400-kilowatt rooftop solar photovoltaic array on the General Services Building and Jarvis Hall Tech Wing.

The budget is estimated at $2,767,000. Construction is expected to begin in January 2023, with completion in March 2024.

“These projects are critical for modernizing our state ��. infrastructure and helping to make sure our buildings are operating efficiently and safely,” said Gov. Tony Evers in a recent announcement.

Student Green Fees fund another 122 panels, generating 8% of building ��. energy needs

Driven by student campus sustainability initiatives, University of Wisconsin-Stout ��. Merle M. Price Commons is more than tripling its ability to tap the sun to partially power the building.

Thanks to $150,000 in student Green Fees, 122 solar panels and infrastructure were recently added on top of Price Commons, joining the 32 panels on the building since 2017. The new panels generate 400 watts each compared with 330 for the original panels.

With the new panels, enough energy will be generated on average per day equivalent to the electricity needed to power six average- to large-size homes. The 122 new panels will generate about 60,181 kilowatts of electricity each year.

“Adding more solar to our campus allows us to shift more toward renewable energy, using the sun as our energy source rather than nonrenewable forms of electricity derived from coal and natural gas power plants,” said �� Sustainability Manager Sarah Rykal. “The sun is a fantastic source of energy. It ��. clean, renewable, doesn’t pollute the air, and — once you have panels to capture it — it ��. free.

“With this installation giving us a total of 59.6 kilowatts in solar panels, we’re now able to provide 8% of Price Commons electricity from solar,” Rykal added. “When we eventually add solar to the whole rooftop, we’ll be close to 40% of the building ��. energy. And as we keep making the building more energy-efficient, with LED lighting and new hood vents in our cafeteria kitchen, solar energy will make up an even greater percentage of the building ��. total electricity.”

About 36 panels can be seen on the slanted south roof face, making them visible from the ground and a visual reminder of campus sustainability, said Student Centers Director Darrin Witucki.

“It ��. exciting to see,” Witucki said.

About 25% of Price Commons’ roof is covered with solar panels now, Witucki said.

“The Stout Student Association Sustainability Council manages the Green Fee, and the Student Centers do have a shared long-term goal of filling the Commons roof to capacity over time,” Witucki said. “The eventual capacity will be about 580 panels. It is an energy-intensive building with a large commercial kitchen.”

Price Commons houses the main University Dining facility.

The new approximately 3-foot by 5-foot panels were installed May 10-13 by Eagle Point Solar of Davenport, Iowa. Payback on the cost is expected in about 15 years, Witucki said.

“Sustainable energy is important to our students,” Witucki said. “They have the long view and know we have a lot of big challenges. They are doing their part to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.”

�� is a Charter Signatory of the Carbon Commitment, a higher education effort to address climate change by committing the campus to neutralizing greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. In signing the Carbon Commitment, �� committed to accelerating sustainability research and education.

Later this year, a kiosk is planned in Price Commons to show students live updates of the energy generated by the solar panels and the equivalent in trees planted by reducing carbon dioxide emissions. About one week after the panels were in place it showed they had saved the equivalent of about 278 pounds of carbon dioxide, or as if just more than two trees had been planted on campus.

Planning is also underway to study adding solar panels to the Memorial Student Center, Rykal said. The Green Fees this year helped prepare the building infrastructure for panels in the future, Rykal said.

Wisconsin gets about 42% of its electricity from coal. But the state has about 20 solar farms under development that will generate more than 2.2 gigawatts of power, or about 7% of the state ��. annual electricity use, according to Wisconsin Public Radio.

New solar installations nationwide are expected to increase 43% from 2019 to a record 19 gigawatts of capacity installed in 2020, according to projections from the Solar Energy Industries Association. Solar also accounted for 43% of all new electricity generating capacity added in 2020.

“Cost of solar has definitely decreased over the past decade,” Rykal said. “We saw a 34% reduction in solar cost between our initial solar installation in 2017 and this new installation of 122 panels. This greatly benefits our campus’ efforts to increase renewable energy over time to meet our climate action goals.”

In recent years, �� has added many green elements to campus buildings during renovations and construction. Some of these sustainability projects include:

LED lighting
Occupancy and daylight sensors
Low or no VOC paints
Reclaimed materials, such as reused bowling lane wood in the Memorial Student Center
Waste bins made from recycled milk cartons
Recycling of demolition/construction waste
Touchless faucets to reduce water use
Hydration stations to promote the use of refillable water bottles
Energy-efficient hand dryers in place of paper towel dispensers

Event helps keep Menomonie clean, supports Habitat for Humanity

Kaitlin Ingle, a University of Wisconsin-Stout graduate student in sustainable management, had clothing, computer equipment, stereo and food that she knew she wasn’t going to use again after the semester.

Rather than toss them into the trash, Ingle took advantage of �� . Spring Move Out May 3-5, which allowed items with life left in them to be reused and other items recycled if possible. The collection site was in a parking lot near the Sports and Fitness Center.

“I think it is important people take responsibility for their impact on the environment,” Ingle said. “Everything you do has an impact. When you throw something away, it doesn’t just go away, it goes somewhere. Living in a rural area, things tend to get left on the sides of roads or city streets. It ��. important to give students options as they are moving out.”

The semester ended May 5. Commencement was held May 8.

After earning her undergraduate degree in business administration at �� in May 2019, Ingle served in the Peace Corps from June to November 2019 to teach human family and life education in South America.

“They don’t have proper recycling or trash disposal,” Ingle noted. “People have burn pits, they throw garbage on the side of roads and in trenches. They use a lot of single-use plastic and go burn them in a barrel.”

That experience helped lead to her decision to return to �� and study sustainable management, said Ingle, who is a public health educator at the Dunn County Public Health Department. “We can do something about the environment and we should,” she said.

Couches, chairs, tables and dressers from Spring Move Out were some of the items that went to Chippewa Valley Habitat for Humanity in Eau Claire to be reused, said �� Sustainability Manager Sarah Rykal. Metal futon frames, metal shelves, TVs, laptop computers, printers, microwaves and speakers were recycled. Nonperishable food went to the Helping Hand Food Pantry for �� students.

“The city wants to ensure boulevards are kept clean during move out,” Rykal said. “We like to offer off-campus students an opportunity to donate, recycle and properly dispose of items they no longer need as they move out of their apartments and houses. It helps to ensure that we are reducing landfill waste by offering a donation program and a recycling program for electronics and metals.”

Last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, students had to bring items to the Dunn County Transfer Station outside of Menomonie for disposal or recycling. No reuse option was available, Rykal said.

“Bringing the full program back this year, with a reuse option in addition to recycling and proper disposal, was good for our students,” Rykal said “We try to stress reusing before recycling to our campus. So, it ��. important to have a reuse option for an event like this, to let items that are in good shape live on rather than sending them to a landfill prematurely.”

The �� Sustainability Office partnered with the city of Menomonie for Spring Move Out. The Stout Student Association split the cost of the event with the city. �� . Waste Reduction Work Group also was involved.

Campus sustainability efforts

�� is committed to sustainability. The campus is a Charter Signatory of the American College and Universities President ��. Climate Commitment, an effort to address climate change by committing the campus to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions.

Recycling and composting are campuswide. Students and staff can ride community and campus buses for free with a current campus identification.

The campus is a bronze level Bike Friendly University, a designation from the League of American Bicyclists for promoting and providing a bikeable campus. Students can rent a bike through the StoutBikes bike share, and there are bike lockers to rent on campus

The campus retrofitted buildings and outdoor areas with LED lights, which will save the campus $89,000 a year in energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

An additional $150,000 in solar panels is slated to be added to Merle M. Price Commons this summer to generate electricity, and an energy kiosk in the building will show how much energy is being produced by those panels. In 2017, 32 solar panels were placed on Price Commons.

The student Green Fee funded two dual-port electric vehicle charging stations to allow employees and students with EVs to charge on campus. The Price Commons 1960s kitchen hood vent is slated for replacement, also saving energy.

In addition to a master ��. degree in sustainable management, �� offers a minor in sustainability.

University of Wisconsin-Stout ��. shredded office paper is finding new life at Cascades in Eau Claire as tissue paper.

When the Dunn County Solid Waste and Recycling closed at the end of last year, �� no longer had an avenue to recycle shredded office paper, said �� Sustainability Manager Sarah Rykal.

The Waste Reduction Work Group searched for new places to recycle the shredded paper, and the idea to work with Cascades came up. Advanced Disposal, which takes the university ��. other recyclable material, was unable to take the shredded paper because it is not easily managed in the no-sort recycling bins, Rykal added.

Working with Cascades “allows us to continue recycling our shredded paper with a local recycler,” Rykal said, noting there is no cost to the university to recycle it. The shredded paper is picked up by Cascades.

�� has recycled about 1.7 tons of shredded paper with Cascades so far in 2021. Last year the university recycled about seven tons, said Zenon Smolarek, assistant director of Facilities Management.

“This is a wonderful alternative to the landfill, and we hope we can continue to work with a local company,” Smolarek said.

According to its website, Cascades manufactures and converts tissue paper products for residential and commercial use. It is the industry leader in Canada and the fourth-largest tissue paper manufacturer in North America. The company has 12,000 employees in over 90 facilities in North America and Europe.

In January, Cascades was ranked 17th on a list of the world ��. 100 most sustainable corporations by Corporate Knights. The ranking is based on an in-depth analysis of international corporations with more than $1 billion in revenue.

Earth Day events

Recycling shredded paper is an example of �� . commitment to sustainability. The university also celebrates Earth Week, which is from Friday, April 16, to Thursday, April 22, this year.

Earth Day is April 22. This year ��. theme is to restore the Earth. Since its inception in 1970, Earth Day focuses on promoting clean living and a healthy, sustainable habitat for people and wildlife.

Events are planned throughout Earth Week at ��.

“We’re proud to celebrate Earth Day, with its Wisconsin roots, and to promote environmental sustainability in all the events and education we do for Earth Week,” Rykal said. “Our campus community is passionate about sustainability, so Earth Week gives us an opportunity to celebrate our commitment to the planet and reducing carbon emissions.”

Earth Day was founded by the late U.S. Sen. Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin, a native of Clear Lake.

On Monday, April 19, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. there will be a virtual panel discussion on plastic waste and recycling titled Where Do We Go From Here? Our Lives with Plastics sponsored by the Sustainability Office and Stout Student Association Sustainability Council. Rykal is part of the panel. Other panelists include:

A plant sale will be held by the Natural Areas Club from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, April 20, on the first floor of the Memorial Student Center.

The SSA Sustainability Council is leading a campus clean-up from noon to 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21. Those interested should meet outside the student center.

There will be a hike down the Red Cedar Trail from noon to 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 22. Participants should meet at the Menomonie Depot Visitor Center near Riverside Park.

Blue Devil Productions is screening the movie “Wall-E” on the lawn of the student center at 9 p.m. on Friday, April 23. In case of rain, the movie will be shown in room 210 of the Applied Arts Building. It is based on a robot that spends its days cleaning up Earth.

�� students can also help celebrate Earth Week with a free reusable bag made from 100% jute, a natural fiber, and printed by the Stout Typographic Society. The bags were paid for through the Stout Student Association ��. Green Fee, a segregated free used to allocate funds for sustainability-related projects. University Dining is honoring Earth Week with plant-forward eating options, local ingredients and new culturally inclusive flavors in menu options.

Sustainability commitment

�� is committed to reducing, reusing, recycling and composting to cut campus waste. The university has bins to recycle plastic bottles, aluminum cans, glass jars, paper and more in each building. Organics for compost bins help to divert food waste on campus. Compostable to-go containers are available in all on-campus cafeterias, eateries and convenience stores. The items are composted in an aerobic process that does not emit methane and other greenhouse gases that contribute to the climate crisis.

The campus is a Bike Friendly University designated by the League of American Bicyclists and also offers bike rentals for students. The university has a solar array on the roof of Merle M. Price Commons and plans to implement more solar projects in the future. The university has added LED lighting, occupancy and daylight sensors; used reclaimed materials in projects; and added touchless faucets to reduce water use and hydration stations to promote the use of refillable water bottles.

Sustainable Transportation Committee looks to future improvements

University of Wisconsin-Stout again has been named a Bike Friendly University.

The bronze level designation, one of six in Wisconsin, came from the League of American Bicyclists. �� first received the designation in 2016. Nine signs around campus recognize the achievement.

The league recognizes universities, businesses and communities with platinum, gold, silver, or bronze designations. The city of Menomonie was designated a bronze level in 2014 and again in 2018.

Applicants are graded on infrastructure, programs, education and support for bicyclists. Thirty-eight schools earned or renewed the award in 2020, according to a recent announcement from the League of American Bicyclists. The designation is renewable every four years.

“Being recognized as a Bike Friendly University signals to our students, employees and community that we prioritize biking as a mode of transportation and recreation,” said Sarah Rykal, sustainability manager for the �� Sustainability Office. “It also gives our campus and our Sustainable Transportation Committee, in particular, a vision to aim for in improving biking on our campus.”

The university ��. bicycle infrastructure includes bike racks, lanes, repair stations, bike lockers at Heritage Hall and CKTO, covered bike parking at the University Library and Jarvis Hall, the StoutBikes rental program through Stout Adventures and the bike registration program. Five-Year transportation plan

“Our Sustainable Transportation Committee is working on a five-year transportation plan for the campus, a charge from the chancellor and the Strategic Planning Group this year,” Rykal said. “This plan will look to incorporate the recommendations from the League of American Bicyclists.

“We have increasingly improved our biking infrastructure over the past decade, and being recognized as a Bike Friendly University is a nice validation of the work we’ve done,” Rykal added. “At the same time, we’re continuing to forge on and make successive improvements for bicyclists into the future.”

Bill Nesper, executive director of the league, noted in a release it was inspiring to see communities, businesses and universities applying for recognition in 2020. “The past year has challenged all of us, and few have felt that more than students and educators at all levels. Amidst the pandemic, we are grateful that these 38 institutions see the benefits of being a Bicycle Friendly University to the well-being and health of their students, staff and faculty,”

Nesper stated. “These colleges and universities are leading by example, building healthy environments where people can safely and easily get around by bike, thereby improving the well-being of their community by enabling access to sustainable transportation options.”

Healthy, zero-carbon transportation

Stout Adventures Coordinator Sam Carney, who oversees the StoutBikes program that started in 2010 and provides rental bikes for students, said biking is important for students and community residents.

“It is a zero-carbon form of transportation,” Carney said. “It ��. good for one ��. health and it ��. less costly than vehicles. Our Sustainable Transportation Committee is working to make biking no longer an ‘alternative’ form of transportation but a form of transportation alongside other forms.”

Lilli Musto, a junior majoring in industrial design with sustainability and studio art minors, bikes to classes most days. “I enjoy the dopamine and adrenaline rush from biking,” said Musto, of Milwaukee. “I also do some of my best thinking while biking, so if I have to brainstorm ideas for a project I go on a ride.”

Musto hopes biking grows on campus and that the designation again will help �� become even more bicycle friendly.

The League of American Bicyclists was founded in the 1880s by Americans who saw bicycling as critical to the nation ��. future. Early advocates organized and petitioned Congress to pave the first roads to increase the accessibility and safety of bicycling.

Today, the League promotes a more bicycle friendly America through advocacy, education and raising awareness of bicycling and its benefits.

“The applications from colleges and universities in 2020 demonstrate the myriad challenges educational institutions have and are overcoming to serve the needs of their students and employees,” stated Bicycle Friendly America Director Amelia Neptune. “What ��. clear is that bicycling is part of the solution many colleges and universities are using to better the campus life of their communities. The League is so proud of institutions like �� for continuing this important work of building a Bicycle Friendly America for everyone at such a critical time for the health of our population and our planet.”

Musto, who is the bike mechanic for Stout Adventures, encourage bikers to use a u-lock and to lock the frames and front wheels to help prevent thefts. “I wish more people rode in the street here,” Musto said. “The phrase 'safety in numbers' rings true here, as more people ride in the street, it increases visibility and the validity of bicyclists, which can show the need for the city to install bike lanes and cycling infrastructure in those areas. I also wish there were bike lanes on Broadway and Main streets, especially between north and main campus.”
