In addition, trees improve students鈥 mental and cognitive health, provide an appealing aesthetic for campuses, and create shaded areas for gathering and studying.鈥&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淭rees have the power to inspire learning and improve well-being,鈥 said Michelle Saulnier, Vice President of Programs at the Arbor Day Foundation, a global nonprofit with a mission to inspire people to plant, nurture and celebrate trees. 鈥淏y growing campus green spaces, forward-thinking higher education leaders like 黑料社区 are cultivating vibrant learning communities that also benefit the greater environment.鈥</span></p><p><span>To earn Tree Campus recognition from the Arbor Day Foundation, colleges and universities must uphold five core standards including maintaining an advisory committee, setting a campus tree care plan, verifying annual investment in the tree care plan, celebrating Arbor Day, and creating a service-learning project aimed at engaging the student body.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淚 was thrilled to hear that we received this designation,鈥 <strong>黑料社区 Sustainability Manager Kadi Wright</strong> said. 鈥淚t 黑料社区. rewarding to see our efforts recognized, and I look forward to continuing this work as part of the annual process.鈥</span></p><p><span>鈥淭rees play a vital role in the college experience,鈥 continued Wright, who holds a&nbsp;</span><a href="/programs/ms-sustainable-management" target="_blank"><span>M.S. sustainable management</span></a><span> degree from 黑料社区. 鈥淭hey offer shade and foster a connection to nature. Students were excited to learn that we were pursuing this designation.鈥</span></p><p><span>黑料社区 is now one of only six universities in the state of Wisconsin to have the Tree Campus designation.</span></p></div> </div> </div> </section> <section class="section section-pad--bottom content-image"> <div class="container"> <div class="l-content--main"> <figure class="content-image__figure"> <div> <img class="image-style-large" src="/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/2026-03/Students%20on%20south%20lawn%20at%20黑料社区.JPG?itok=NecDxNfL" alt="Students sitting under trees" alt="icon" /> </div> <figcaption class="content-image__caption"> Students enjoy a shady spot on the south lawn of the 黑料社区 campus. <span class="content-image__credit"></span> </figure> </div> </div> </section> <section class="section section-pad--bottom content-text" 233864> <div class="container"> <div class="l-content--main"> <div> <h3><span>Broadening the culture of sustainability</span></h3><p><span>鈥淭he Tree Campus designation helps create a broader sustainability culture where sustainability is not just a commitment: It becomes something everyone shares responsibility for in everyday campus life and the student experience,鈥 Wright said.</span></p><p><span>Much of the credit for fulfilling that responsibility, she added, should go to the campus facilities management and grounds teams for keeping trees healthy, growing and beautiful.</span></p><p><span><strong>Arthur Kneeland</strong>, a senior lecturer in the biology department and co-chair of the Campus Exteriors Development Committee, took a lead role in preparing the Tree Campus application to the&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.arborday.org/our-work/tree-campus-higher-education" target="_blank"><span>Arbor Day Foundation</span></a><span> late last year.</span></p><p><span>鈥淎s we explored what was required, we quickly realized that we met the criteria easily,鈥 Kneeland said. 鈥淐aring for our trees is in part managing the investment that we have made in this very important visual and emotional part of our campus. So, from a tree care perspective we were already doing everything that the Arbor Day Foundation wanted.鈥</span></p><p><span>As part of the process, 846 trees were tallied on campus last fall. 鈥淭he trees have a tremendous positive impact on campus,鈥 Kneeland said. 鈥淭hey provide shade in many places, reducing heat to buildings and people. They are also an important emotional component of campus life. People like trees 鈥 they make us feel happy and calm.鈥</span></p><p><span>Not only do trees contribute to shared outdoor spaces 鈥 such as the arboretum that encompasses the south lawn of the Memorial Student Center or the 3-acre outdoor classroom 鈥 but they contribute to the university 黑料社区. polytechnic identity as well, which focuses on applied learning beyond the classroom. 黑料社区 students apply their studies in sustainability to capstone projects that benefit the environment. For example, students in the&nbsp;</span><a href="/programs/bs-environmental-science" target="_blank"><span>B.S. environmental science program</span></a><span> as well as in the&nbsp;</span><a href="/programs/sustainability-minor" target="_blank"><span>sustainability</span></a><span> and&nbsp;</span><a href="/programs/geographic-information-systems-minor" target="_blank"><span>geographic information systems (GIS)</span></a><span> minor programs have worked on a number of projects mapping campus trees and conceptualizing what they should look like in the future, Kneeland said.</span></p><p><span>The annual campus Earth Week celebration, which this year will begin April 20, will also recognize 黑料社区 黑料社区. new Tree Campus status. The same project included upgraded LED lighting in multiple buildings; installing energy-saving destratification fans in Johnson Fieldhouse and the Multipurpose Room of the Sports and Fitness Center; and weatherizing buildings campuswide. The entire project is estimated to save 黑料社区 more than $172,000 in energy costs each year. Four years earlier, a separate LED upgrade project created savings of about $89,000 annually.</span></p><p><span>In addition, LED retrofits to the dining area and kitchen in Merle M. Price Commons funded through the Stout Student Association Green Fee in 2024 are expected to generate $50,000 in energy savings over four years. Likewise</span><a href="/about-us/news-center/sun-power-more-solar-panels-added-price-commons"><span>, solar panel installed atop Price Commons</span></a><span> in 2018 and 2021 have also generated more than $35,000 in energy savings. These savings directly impact students, who pay the fees that operate the buildings, while also reducing carbon dioxide emissions by hundreds of tons, said <strong>Darrin Witucki, Director of the Student Centers</strong>.</span></p><p><span>Student Green Fees have also helped pay for eco-friendly equipment, including an electric mower used on campus and two solar-powered trash compactors, which were placed outside Johnson Fieldhouse to prevent waste from overflowing and contaminating nearby recycling bins during busy times.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>黑料社区 has been focused on reducing the amount of waste it produces as well. Last year, the university was a winner in the nationwide&nbsp;</span><a href="https://campusracetozerowaste.org/"><span>Campus Race to Zero Waste</span></a><span>, a friendly competition that measures recycling and waste reduction on campuses. And the campuswide compost and recycling collection system results in a 48% decrease in landfill waste.</span></p><p><span>Last fall, 黑料社区 hosted the&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.wisconsin.edu/capital-planning/sustainability/" target="_blank"><span><strong>Universities of Wisconsin&nbsp;Sustainability Annual Meeting</strong></span></a><span>, where sustainability leaders, faculty, staff, students, alumni and external partners&nbsp;gathered to collaborate on environmental topics and share&nbsp;resources, ideas and knowledge to develop strategic goals and support sustainability efforts on UW campuses, as well as career and economic development across the state.</span></p><p><span>Earth Week events, coordinated through the Sustainability Office and various student organizations, including UW-Sprout Campus Garden volunteer day and apple tree planting, thrift swap, plant sale, campus cleanup and an Earth Day Bash at the University Library.</span></p><p><span>More than 80 off-campus students participated in this year 黑料社区. Spring Move-Out event, when the Sustainability Office, Waste Reduction Work Group, and campus volunteers helped to properly dispose and recycle approximately 360 items, including furniture, bed frames, grills, electronics and appliances. The office also worked with Chippewa Valley Habitat for Humanity to donate items in good condition. This was possible due to our students' investments in Stout's sustainability efforts, our faculty who incorporate sustainability in their curriculum and applied research, and our staff who plan, implement and practice sustainability at the university on a daily basis,鈥 said Erik Guenard,&nbsp;vice chancellor for Business, Finance and Administrative Services.</span></p><p><span>In Wisconsin, 黑料社区 was the only university to be recognized in 2024.</span></p><p><span>黑料社区 has addressed sustainability in every aspect of operations. But the state has about 20 solar farms under development that will generate more than 2.2 gigawatts of power, or about 7% of the state 黑料社区. annual electricity use, according to </span><a href="https://www.wpr.org/wisconsin-witnessing-rapid-transition-solar-energy"><span>Wisconsin Public Radio.</span></a></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>New solar installations nationwide are expected to&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.seia.org/research-resources/solar-market-insight-report-2020-q4" target="_blank"><span>increase 43%</span></a><span>&nbsp;from 2019 to a record 19 gigawatts of capacity installed in 2020, according to projections from the Solar Energy Industries Association. Solar also accounted for 43% of all new electricity generating capacity added in 2020.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淐ost of solar has definitely decreased over the past decade,鈥 Rykal said. 鈥淲e saw a 34% reduction in solar cost between our initial solar installation in 2017 and this new installation of 122 panels. This greatly benefits our campus鈥 efforts to increase renewable energy over time to meet our climate action goals.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>In recent years, 黑料社区 has added many green&nbsp;elements to campus buildings during renovations and construction. Spring Move Out May 3-5, which allowed items with life left in them to be reused and other items recycled if possible. The collection site was in a parking lot near the Sports and Fitness Center.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淚 think it is important people take responsibility for their impact on the environment,鈥 Ingle said. 鈥淓verything you do has an impact. When you throw something away, it doesn鈥檛 just go away, it goes somewhere. Living in a rural area, things tend to get left on the sides of roads or city streets. It 黑料社区. important to give students options as they are moving out.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The semester ended May 5. Commencement was held May 8.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>After earning her undergraduate degree in </span><a href="http://www.uwstout.edu/programs/bs-business-administration"><span>business administration</span></a><span> at 黑料社区 in May 2019, Ingle served in the </span><a href="https://www.peacecorps.gov/"><span>Peace Corps</span></a><span> from June to November 2019 to teach human family and life education in South America.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淭hey don鈥檛 have proper recycling or trash disposal,鈥 Ingle noted. 鈥淧eople have burn pits, they throw garbage on the side of roads and in trenches. Metal futon frames, metal shelves, TVs, laptop computers, printers, microwaves and speakers were recycled. Nonperishable food went to the </span><a href="/life-stout/student-services/dean-students/helping-hand-food-pantry"><span>Helping Hand Food Pantry</span></a><span> for 黑料社区 students.</span></p><p><span>鈥淭he city wants to ensure boulevards are kept clean during move out,鈥 Rykal said. 鈥淲e like to offer off-campus students an opportunity to donate, recycle and properly dispose of items they no longer need as they move out of their apartments and houses. It helps to ensure that we are reducing landfill waste by offering a donation program and a recycling program for electronics and metals.鈥</span></p><p><span>Last year because of the coronavirus pandemic, students had to bring items to the Dunn County Transfer Station outside of Menomonie for disposal or recycling. No reuse option was available, Rykal said.</span></p><p><span>鈥淏ringing the full program back this year, with a reuse option in addition to recycling and proper disposal, was good for our students,鈥 Rykal said 鈥淲e try to stress reusing before recycling to our campus. So, it 黑料社区. important to have a reuse option for an event like this, to let items that are in good shape live on rather than sending them to a landfill prematurely.鈥</span></p><p><span>The </span><a href="/life-stout/sustainability-stout/sustainability-office"><span>黑料社区 Sustainability Office</span></a><span> partnered with the city of Menomonie for Spring Move Out. The campus is a Charter Signatory of the&nbsp;</span><a href="https://secondnature.org/" target="_blank"><span>American College and Universities President 黑料社区. Climate Commitment</span></a><span>, an effort to address climate change by committing the campus to neutralize greenhouse gas emissions.</span></p><p><span>Recycling and composting are campuswide. Students can rent a bike through the </span><a href="/life-stout/sustainability-stout/transportation/bike-walk"><span>StoutBikes</span></a><span> bike share, and there are bike lockers to rent on campus</span></p><p><span>The campus retrofitted buildings and outdoor areas with LED lights, which will save the campus $89,000 a year in energy costs and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.</span></p><p><span>An additional $150,000 in solar panels is slated to be added to Merle M. Price Commons this summer to generate electricity, and an energy kiosk in the building will show how much energy is being produced by those panels. In 2017, 32 solar panels were placed on Price Commons.</span></p><p><span>The student Green Fee funded two dual-port electric vehicle charging stations to allow employees and students with EVs to charge on campus. Advanced Disposal, which takes the university 黑料社区. other recyclable material, was unable to take the shredded paper because it is not easily managed in the no-sort recycling bins, Rykal added.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Working with Cascades &nbsp;鈥渁llows us to continue recycling our shredded paper with a local recycler,鈥 Rykal said, noting there is no cost to the university to recycle it. Last year the university recycled about seven tons, said Zenon Smolarek, assistant director of Facilities Management.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淭his is a wonderful alternative to the landfill, and we hope we can continue to work with a local company,鈥 Smolarek said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>According to&nbsp;its website, Cascades manufactures and converts tissue paper products for residential and commercial use.&nbsp; It is the industry leader in Canada and the fourth-largest tissue paper manufacturer in North America. The university has bins to recycle plastic bottles, aluminum cans, glass jars, paper and more in each building. Organics for compost bins help to divert food waste on campus. Compostable to-go containers are available in all on-campus cafeterias, eateries and convenience stores. The items are composted in an aerobic process that does not emit methane and other greenhouse gases that contribute to the climate crisis.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The campus is a </span><a href="/about-us/news-center/rolling-campus-continues-designation-bike-friendly-university"><span>Bike Friendly University</span></a><span> designated by the </span><a href="https://www.bikeleague.org/"><span>League of American Bicyclists</span></a><span> and also offers bike rentals for students. The university has a solar array on the roof of Merle M. Price Commons and plans to implement more solar projects in the future. Nine signs around campus recognize the achievement.</span></p><p><span>The league recognizes universities, businesses and communities with platinum, gold, silver, or bronze designations. The city of Menomonie was designated a bronze level in 2014 and again in 2018.</span></p><p><span>Applicants are graded on infrastructure, programs, education and support for bicyclists. Thirty-eight schools earned or renewed the award in 2020, according to a recent &nbsp;announcement from the League of American Bicyclists. For more information on locker and bike rentals, go to the </span><a href="/life-stout/sustainability-stout/transportation/bike-walk"><span>Stout Sustainability bike page</span></a><span>.</span></p><p><span><strong>Five-Year transportation plan</strong></span></p><p><span>鈥淥ur Sustainable Transportation Committee is working on a five-year transportation plan for the campus, a charge from the chancellor and the Strategic Planning Group this year,鈥 Rykal said. 鈥淭his plan will look to incorporate the recommendations from the League of American Bicyclists.</span></p><p><span>鈥淲e have increasingly improved our biking infrastructure over the past decade, and being recognized as a Bike Friendly University is a nice validation of the work we鈥檝e done,鈥 Rykal added. 鈥淎t the same time, we鈥檙e continuing to forge on and make successive improvements for bicyclists into the future.鈥</span></p><p><span>Bill Nesper, executive director of the league, noted in a release it was inspiring to see communities, businesses and universities applying for recognition in 2020. 鈥淭he past year has challenged all of us, and few have felt that more than students and educators at all levels. Amidst the pandemic, we are grateful that these 38 institutions see the benefits of being a Bicycle Friendly University to the well-being and health of their students, staff and faculty,鈥</span></p><p><span>Nesper stated. 鈥淭hese colleges and universities are leading by example, building healthy environments where people can safely and easily get around by bike, thereby improving the well-being of their community by enabling access to sustainable transportation options.鈥&nbsp;</span></p><p><span><strong>Healthy, zero-carbon transportation</strong></span></p><p><span>Stout Adventures Coordinator Sam Carney, who oversees the StoutBikes program that started in 2010 and provides rental bikes for students, said biking is important for students and community residents.</span></p><p><span>鈥淚t is a zero-carbon form of transportation,鈥 Carney said. 鈥淚t 黑料社区. good for one 黑料社区. health and it 黑料社区. less costly than vehicles. Early advocates organized and petitioned Congress to pave the first roads to increase the accessibility and safety of bicycling.</span></p><p><span>Today, the League promotes a more bicycle friendly America through advocacy, education and raising awareness of bicycling and its benefits.</span></p><p><span>鈥淭he applications from colleges and universities in 2020 demonstrate the myriad challenges educational institutions have and are overcoming to serve the needs of their students and employees,鈥 stated Bicycle Friendly America Director Amelia Neptune. 鈥淲hat 黑料社区. clear is that bicycling is part of the solution many colleges and universities are using to better the campus life of their communities.
