High atop a five-star hotel in Minneapolis, �� real estate property management senior Madelyn King completed her summer cooperative experience as a private residences intern with Four Seasons.

“What I love most about the real estate property management major is that no two days are ever the same. I enjoy the fast-paced environment, but especially the opportunity to build meaningful connections with both residents and coworkers,” said King, who is also majoring in hotel, restaurant and tourism management.

Her internship at Four Seasons, which has 34 private residences at its Minneapolis location and manages residences in 21 countries, provided her with just the luxury residential living management experience she was looking for.

“In luxury residential living, we help to make a house a home through thoughtful touches, caring gestures, world-class amenities, and a team of staff with a profound expertise in property management in the world ��. most sought-after destinations,” King said.

King, of Brownsville, plans to graduate in May 2026 and is excited about the possibility of continuing with Four Seasons or pursuing a role where she can combine hospitality, property management and community-building.

“I’m thankful to ��, my professors, and the REPM program for helping shape my career path and giving me the tools to succeed in this internship and beyond,” she said.

King was one of 20 �� students who received the university ��. 2025 Outstanding Cooperative Education and Internship Program Student of the Year Award. She was awarded for her excellence and achievements in a previous internship with Whistling Straits.

How do you hope to make an impact in your field?

I hope to be a positive moment in someone ��. day, whether by helping solve a problem, offering a warm welcome or simply making someone feel at home.

What were your main roles as an intern with Four Seasons?

A few of my main responsibilities were:

Assisting with resident interaction and guest services
Coordinating housekeeping and engineering tasks
Managing package deliveries, vendor access and concierge requests
Supporting our team with residential operations and governance-related tasks.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?

I’ve really enjoyed diving into the governing documents that guide how the property operates. It might sound boring at first, but it ��. actually super interesting to understand the structure behind luxury residential living.

I read through the entirety of the governing documents and created a summary presentation, which I presented to a few department directors. These documents included CC&R (Covenants, Conditions, and Restrictions), bylaws, declaration and agreements.

I truly feel that without my internship, I would not have been able to understand these documents, as I learn best by gaining hands-on experience.

What was challenging about your internship, and how did you face those challenges?

The most challenging part was handling the occasional resident complaint. Conflict is never easy, but I’ve learned a lot about staying calm, listening actively and working through those moments with professionalism.

While managing resident complaints taught me professionalism with guests, leadership roles challenged me to navigate team dynamics. The biggest conflicts I’ve faced in leadership have been personality clashes within a team. I’ve learned to approach those situations by setting clear expectations, encouraging open communication and finding common ground. This helps create fairness while also allowing different personalities to work together effectively

How will your courses and experiences at Stout help you make an impact in your career?

Stout does an incredible job preparing students for real-world experiences. The coursework is relevant and applicable, and I’ve found myself using what I’ve learned in class almost daily.

One of my favorite classes was Marketing and Leasing Commercial and Residential Properties. Additionally, I found accounting courses to be helpful to gain a better understanding of finance within a business.

Involvement in student organizations like IREM, the Institute of Real Estate Management, has also been a game-changer. It ��. given me the confidence to connect with industry professionals and grow my network.

Career Services’ annual First Destination Report declared that 100% of recent REPM graduates are employed or furthering their education within six months of graduation, and have an average starting salary of $58,000. �� . real estate property management program is one of only a handful of its kind in the U.S.

Serving as a seasonal leasing specialist at The Vue at Pinnacle Park and The Lafayette in Fitchburg, �� real estate property management senior William Boyce completed his summer cooperative experience with Weidner Apartment Homes.

“What I love most about the REPM major is the variety in real estate, as well as the core concepts that are found in every avenue of the field. I know various professionals who have pivoted in different directions in real estate without having to restart their career ladder,” Boyce said.

The Lafayette is a luxury property with two buildings, less than five years old, and offers modern finishes. The Vue is comprised of five buildings and has more traditional home colors. The residences are both located near nature reserves, Boyce said.

Weidner Apartment Homes, headquartered in Kirkland, Washington, was recognized on the National Multi-Family Housing Council ��. 2024 50 Largest Apartment Owners List as the 12th largest private owner of apartments in the U.S. It represents more than 315 multifamily residential communities, with more than 72,000 units in 13 states and Canada.

Boyce, of DeForest, plans to graduate this December and is interested in a career in real estate appraisal. As a Senior Airman in the Wisconsin Air National Guard, he is set to begin Airman Leadership School in 2026, which he’ll complete before beginning his real estate career.

“�� . Veteran Services has made utilizing my benefits a breeze. I have heard of other airmen at different schools having little to no help putting their benefits to use. Thanks to Veteran Services, I will be able to graduate debt- and stress-free,” said Boyce, adding, “Brian Hackner, military education benefits coordinator, has been a huge help.”

How do you hope to make an impact in your field?

I hope to impact the real estate property management field by changing the stigma of property managers. Most people only recall their worst memories of moving out of a property they lived in. I hope to create some lasting memories.

The “Love Notes” program at Weidner is a good example of this and is something I would like to take with me. They send notes to their residents to show how much they appreciate them, and they help inspire community.

What were your main roles as an intern with Weidner Apartment Homes?

My main role was helping in the leasing office. I completed tours, answered phones, and responded to emails from prospects and residents.

We started our day with an hour of cleaning the property. This would include wiping down windows, vacuuming common areas and inspecting vacant units. Before tours or when inspecting vacant units, we would bring a “sparkle kit” to clean the place up. A little difference in cleanliness can go a long way.

Every day is different in property management. I had random projects, like removing a dozen tires from the property to Discount Tire for proper waste disposal. I also repainted the number lines for an underground parking garage! I had a lot of fun doing that.

What did you enjoy most about your internship?

I enjoy charts and graphs. Our community director had all the reports for the property finances. Through these numbers, you can see everything that is happening at the property. The documents would go over accounts receivable, accounts payable, vacancies and more.

The regional directors have already forecasted the year based on current market trends and past years. My classes in Investment Analysis and ICT Problem Solving were beneficial for this. I was already familiar with all the terminology thanks to my property management classes. We had practiced the calculations that would go into these numbers as well.

What was challenging about your internship, and how did you face those challenges?

The most challenging part of my internship was learning the way Weidner Apartment Homes’ properties operate. This was my third internship in the industry, and it made me realize that every property – even if part of a larger company – is managed it in its own way.

I worked at The Heights in Menomonie as a community assistant. This role was heavily based around community events, marketing and cleaning. At Guardian Property Management, I was an administrative assistant, where I responded to resident questions and processed lease renewals.

How will your courses and experiences at Stout help you make an impact in your career?

I know for certain that my courses and experiences at Stout will help me make an impact in the industry. Stout ��. REPM major is unique and gave me a head start compared to a new hire unfamiliar with the industry.

By far, my favorite class has been Real Estate Appraisal. I really liked the way the class was structured, and it was a lot more numbers-based. Learning the different approaches to valuation and practicing them in and out of the classroom was exciting for me.

That said, I have loved all of my Property Management classes. In Real Estate Ethics, we had a debate at the end of the semester, and during our Capstone, we toured a property in the Twin Cities to create a management plan for.

A passionate advocate for education, career readiness, and developing the next generation of industry leaders, Weidner has contributed to six universities across the U.S. and Canada to establish or build upon programs that expand higher education opportunities in real estate and property management.

Weidner ��. partnership with �� stands as a cornerstone of this commitment. These investments have not only elevated �� . national reputation in property management education but have also transformed countless students’ futures.

Over his career, Weidner has donated $2.5 million to �� through the �� Foundation & Alumni Association to strengthen the real estate property management program and ensure students’ success.

“My long-term investment into the program at �� reflects my confidence in the curriculum that is being taught to students; the fact that educators in REPM have prior industry experience and can help to personalize the education with real world examples,” Weidner said.

“The workforce of the future requires an adaptable mindset of lifelong learners who continuously upgrade their technical skills as well as the soft skills that are valued by employers,” he added. “By partnering with colleges and universities, Weidner Apartment Homes can help shape the education of the upcoming workforce and embed the requirements of the industry into the curriculum. In this way, we are helping to create the workers we need, instead of merely trying to find them on the open market.”

Supporting future leaders who positively impact their communities

Weidner ��. support ensures that students and faculty have the tools and spaces they need to succeed. By investing in campus learning environments, Weidner strengthens the connection between Stout and industry and gives students access to top-tier technology and resources.

In 2012, he donated $1 million to create the Weidner Center for Residential Property Management at ��, establishing a premier hub for academic excellence in the field. The center provides a state-of-the-art interactive learning environment. The classroom lab offers a realistic, cutting-edge business setting. The center also includes a study lounge, huddle rooms and an interview space for visiting employers.

Real estate management program receives $1M donation from industry partner Weidner

Private support for the renovation of Heritage Hall at �� has continued to grow, highlighted by a new, major donation for an important program.

In 2015, Weidner contributed an additional $500,000 to strengthen the real estate property management program further, and in 2023, he donated $1,050,000 to fund major scholarships for new and transfer students, making a high-quality education more accessible. Through two University Foundation scholarships that support 34 students annually and an ambassador role focused on recruitment, he is helping remove barriers and open doors for more students to succeed.

“The multifamily portion of real estate is possibly the best business ever, because we provide one of the three critical needs of life. Everyone needs air to breathe, food to eat, and shelter,” Weidner said. “We provide homes for short-term or long-term. Regardless of the economy, our product is needed. At the same time, it is a ‘hard asset,’ so it is not devalued by inflation. In fact, its value, if chosen well, increases.

“However, because real estate is a hard asset, it takes physical work, maintenance, frequent viewing and monthly financial review,” he added. “It also requires ‘people skills’ to assist in management, as well as thoughtful analysis and research. Consequently, if you are willing to work hard, set goals, and patiently work your asset, you will be greatly rewarded.”

Weidner ��. advice for students and graduates is, “I adopted a wonderful saying many years ago, which has always given me a positive outlook, ‘Trouble is opportunity in work clothes.’”

Chancellor Katherine Frank thanked Weidner for his generosity and support of ��.

“Mr. Weidner ��. incredible gift to support teaching and learning at �� will continue to impact students’ learning and career trajectory far into the future. He recognizes the value of our polytechnic approach to education at �� and how this approach produces future leaders in the workplace who positively impact their communities,” Frank said.

Unique offering gives students hands-on experiences in luxury to anticipate guest expectations

The university has consistently been among the leaders in the rankings over the past seven years. The top 10 schools this year were from the U.S. The second 10 included universities from Canada, India, the Netherlands, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

Executive Hospitality Management at �� is part of the School of Management. Programs include hotel, restaurant and tourism management, which also is offered online; golf enterprise management; and real estate property management.

Students in other management programs, for example business administration, can specialize in golf management or earn a minor in property management.

Lunchtime lab: Students learn restaurant management skills with new campus café initiative

For a group of Fireside Café student employees at ��, lunchtime this fall also means lab time.

“�� has built its reputation on a unique educational model that combines real-world experience, strong industry connections and innovative, hands-on learning. Partnerships with industry leaders, such as Forbes Travel Guide, Destination Kohler and other top resorts and hotels create unmatched opportunities for students,” said Professor Kristal Gerdes, chair of the hospitality and technology innovation department.

“These collaborations provide students with direct insights into industry standards and trends and give them a head start on building professional networks. This recent ranking reflects the faculty ��. commitment to providing a cutting-edge education that responds to industry needs and prepares students for long-term success,” she said.

Fit to a tee: New Pat Kell Golf Center perfect match for Blue Devil teams, golf management majors

Women ��. and men ��. golf team members and students majoring in golf enterprise management have a new, high-tech playing and learning hub at ��.

In �� . 2024 First Destination report by Career Services, 100% of recent hospitality graduates were employed within six months. The rate reflects the programs’ quality and high demand for �� graduates across the industry, Gerdes added, underscoring how well-prepared �� students are for the workforce and speaking to the effectiveness of the applied learning approach.

Examples of �� . industry-focused and innovative approaches to hospitality management education include:

A Service Excellence course in collaboration with Forbes Travel Guide, which is known for its independent annual ratings of luxury hotels, restaurants and spas in more than 74 countries.

“�� is the first university in the world with this FTG collaboration,” Professor Eric Brey said. “Our relationship with FTG provides a unique opportunity to integrate a service excellence mindset throughout our program and curriculum.”

Hands-on learning in hospitality and service excellence, with off-campus stays, exemplifies polytechnic advantage

A course in Food Service Production and Operations that uses lab periods to help operate a public restaurant, Fireside Café in the Memorial Student Center. Students plan, prepare and serve food while gaining management skills.
An annual field trip experience to see operations and speak with leaders in the industry. This fall the event was a two-day trip to Kalahari Resorts & Conventions in Wisconsin Dells, including meeting with John Chastan, general manager, a �� hospitality alum; and a tour of Trappers Turn golf course.

At Kalahari, the 55 students from three classes also attended the Wisconsin Hotel & Lodging Association convention.

Students’ industry connections include a required internship or cooperative education experience. They can earn credit and a salary while working at industry leaders like Destination Kohler, Omni Hotels or Weidner Apartment Homes; and several of Wisconsin ��. world-class golf courses, such as Erin Hills, Sand Valley and Whistling Straits, along with other leading courses around the country.

Students can make additional industry connections through campus chapters of professional organizations, such as the Club Managers Association of America; and the Institute of Real Estate Management.

�� alum have worked at top hotels, golf courses and property management companies across the world. Recently, 1991 HRTM graduate Brian Hicks, who began his career at Ritz Carlton hotels in Atlanta, was named CEO of Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International.

For Charlie Casper, property management runs in the family. His family owns three popular St. Paul restaurants – The Nook, Ranham Bowling Center and Shamrocks, the Irish Nook.

So, earning his B.S. in real estate property management from �� seemed the natural course.

“From the hands-on experience to the people I met along the way, I have reason to advocate and recommend Stout as a polytechnic school,” said Casper, who crossed the commencement stage on Dec. 16, along with 526 graduates.

“My time here was an invaluable experience. If I had to do it over again, I would not have changed a thing. I learned and grew so much; I don’t think I could have gotten this experience anywhere else,” he said.

He plans to next earn his real estate license and work in a property management position for one of the major real estate companies in the Twin Cities.

How well has �� prepared you to work in your field and why?

I would say my time here at Stout has matured me in ways a lot of peers outside of Stout have yet to experience. I feel that I gained wisdom as well as knowledge as a result of my experience and education at Stout.

Stout has prepared me for my industry. Not only did the program educate me on specific scenarios, career-long tips and professionalism, but it has also included professional certifications that are highly regarded in our field. Our program also has a very high employment rate upon graduation.

What stands out about your �� experience?

Our property management labs and lectures are very comprehensive and led by enthusiastic and interactive instructors who want us to succeed. I can think of numerous classes in our curriculum that I was excited for.

There are so many internship opportunities, and they are structured to nurture what students learn in the classroom and apply it to real world experiences. I had an internship with Dominium, in downtown Minneapolis, and with Clarity Commercial.

How did your involvement on campus impact your experience?

As a member and co-president of the Student IREM (Institute of Real Estate Management) Club, it has helped me exponentially in my professional network building and getting familiar with leaders of the industry. Through the club, we have access to exclusive scholarships from professional organizations.

This year, I was one of the 10 nationally recognized students to receive the IREM Student Leader Award. I was officially recognized at an all-expense paid trip to the IREM Global Summit in Toronto. I was also posted on their blog, social media and a column in their Journal of Property Management.

This has helped me in my employment search by connecting me with recruiters and major companies.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

Time management, priority management and attention to details were challenging. For example, I was quicker to tackle assignments in my major curriculum than my general education classes, causing unnecessary stress near deadlines that could have been avoided with better planning.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I am proud of graduating Cum Laude on top of being able to balance schoolwork, professional development, helping run the IREM Club and maintaining a good personal and social life.

Three students in �� . School of Management are gaining leadership skills and financial support through their awarded roles and scholarships from regional and national associations.

The hotel, restaurant and tourism management and real estate and property management students and their recognitions are:

Charlie Casper, REPM, St. Paul: Student leader in the Institute of Real Estate Management, an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors, which has 1.5 million members.
Kalie Dahl, HRTM, Cologne, Minn.: Joe Perdue Scholarship recipient by the Club Management Association of America, the largest professional association for managers of membership clubs in the U.S. and internationally.
Bailey Jacque, HRTM and REPM, Thorp: Student representative to the Wisconsin Hotel and Lodging Association Board of Directors, comprised of lodging industry leaders from across the state.

Their memberships in professional associations, involvement in on-campus industry-related clubs and activities and internship experiences are preparing Casper, Dahl and Jacque for their future careers.

Charlie Casper: Growing the family business

Casper was honored to be elected as an IREM student leader and represent �� . real estate property management program. He is one of 10 students nationwide to be recognized annually for their academic achievements.

Casper will participate in webinars; mentorship and networking opportunities with property managers; have free access to certain IREM courses to earn professional designations; and attend the annual IREM Global Summit, this year to be held in Toronto, Canada.

“The award will give me a foot in the door and move my career forward,” Casper said. “Eventually, I plan on owning and managing real estate, including the business my family currently owns and operates.”

Casper wants to help his family grow and manage their assets – The Nook and Ranham Bowling Center, featured by Guy Fieri on “Diners, Drive-ins and Dives”; and its sister location, Shamrocks, the Irish Nook, in St. Paul.

“My great-grandfather began opening and operating restaurants in St. Paul,” he said. “My father bought his first location, the Nook, at 19 or 20 years old.”

Casper will graduate in December. He believes the REPM program has pushed his career in his desired direction through activities and his involvement in the IREM Student Club, for which he serves as vice president. He has completed an internship with Dominium, an apartment community in downtown Minneapolis, and is currently interning with Clarity Commercial, assisting in managing its diverse commercial portfolio.

“I have tripled my professional network in the field, made friends in the industry and gained invaluable mentors on and off campus,” he said. “The REPM program has made me confident in my abilities and prepared me to enter the workforce with knowledge and experience in the industry.”

Kalie Dahl: A passion for service

The Club Management Association of America scholarship will help Dahl be financially independent for school-related expenses this year – her senior year. It is awarded to 10 students across the country each year to support their pursuit of careers in club management and further their hospitality education.

“The CMAA scholarship will have an immense impact, provide me security, allow me to worry less about debt and free up my time to give back to this club and school that I am so honored to represent and for which I have immense appreciation and gratitude,” Dahl said.

Dahl will graduate in spring 2024. She believes the HRTM program, hands-on applied learning, internships and extracurriculars like CMAA helped her gain a clearer vision of her career.

She ��. interested in coordinating club memberships and events, training and employee development, and club or hospitality operations administration.

Dahl has been a member of CMAA since her first year at ��, boosting her leadership skills, with professional guidance, as she helped with memberships, events and apparel.

She has completed three internships to explore hospitality avenues through the HRTM program and CMAA, including in a restaurant manager role with Bearpath Golf & Country Club, Eden Prairie, Minn.; helping run the City of Chanhassen ��. parks and recreation department, in Chanhassen, Minn.; and as a client relationship manager at IDeaS, in Minneapolis.

“Even with my connection and admiration for clubs, I wanted to use my summers to explore different careers as this is the most advantageous time to do that and I can always go back to the club industry,” Dahl said.

Dahl also has a passion for service, founding and serving as president of the Service Club on campus, which has 300 contacts and more than 70 members. She is a member of Gamma Sigma Sigma service sorority, Latinos Unidos and FIGHT Club (Fighting Local Injustices & Global Human Trafficking). She was a resident adviser, works in the Involvement Center, and is joining the Hospitality Sales and Marketing Association International student club.

She was named an Outstanding Student Leader of the Year at the Leadership Awards last spring, and the Service Club was awarded Student Organization of the Year and Student Organization Event of the Year for its Trick or Treating for Canned Goods.

Professor Eric Brey believes the program ��. relationship with local CMAA chapters and their willingness to financially support students is an important part of their learning experience.

“It is these experiences that create exposure to clubs and encourage students to explore this industry as an incredible career path,” he said. “Having one of our students recognized with such a prestigious scholarship further demonstrates the industry's support of our students, especially those that pursue excellence such as Ms. Dahl, as she exemplifies what the club industry is all about.”

Bailey Jacque: Advocating for student interests

By serving as a Wisconsin Hotel and Lodging Association student board member, Jacque will learn how to advocate for student interests, while networking with professionals to act as the liaison between industry professionals and students.

Jacque will graduate in spring 2025. Her career goals are to help in the growth of hotel businesses, in an environment that tests her skills and enables learning.

“My HRTM and REPM programs help me get out-of-class experience with career professionals, like attending career conferences and networking events,” she said.

Jacque interned in hospitality sales with IDeaS, in Minneapolis; and was a property management intern with Weidner Apartment Homes, in Woodinville, Wash., learning how to manage luxury apartments.

She is a �� Ambassador, president of the student chapter of Hospitality, Sales, Marketing, Association International and IREM member.

WHLA, founded in 1896, is a nonprofit trade association serving to advance Wisconsin ��. lodging industry through advocacy and the delivery of valued services.

�� students interested in hospitality and service excellence had hands-on experiences in luxury this spring semester.

The new Service Excellence course, offered through �� . School of Management, showcased what it takes to deliver five-star service.

“Service excellence is making sure everything exceeds the expectations of guests,” said Professor Eric Brey, who leads the course, supported by Forbes Travel Guide (FTG), which provided core service excellence content.

FTG is known for its independent annual ratings of luxury hotels, restaurants and spas in more than 74 countries. �� is the first university in the world with this FTG collaboration.

Unique offering gives students hands-on experiences in luxury to anticipate guest expectations

The elective course is a general business offering, open to students in any major, including hotel, restaurant and tourism management, business administration, golf enterprise management and entrepreneurship programs.

HRTM majors Alejandro Calixto Martinez, Riley Michaud, Sam Micoley and Sam Spoden were some of the first to enroll in the course.

With an emphasis in luxury management, Michaud, of Menomonie, believes the course further enriched her understanding of luxury management.

“The most fulfilling aspect of this course is the hope that it will evolve into a program that equips the upcoming generation of hospitality professionals with the skills to provide top-notch hospitality, regardless of their position or company,” she said. “I have set my scope to continue to venture into the luxury industry and grow my professional and personal skillset within the highest levels of hospitality.”

With luxury, ‘the sky is the limit’

Students had the opportunity to stay overnight at Destination Kohler, a Wisconsin luxury resort in Kohler. They enjoyed food and drinks, used the golf simulators and participated in Kohler ��. wellness programs, with a choice of Yoga on the Lake, Bold Cycle or Sports Core and access to the pool and hot tubs. They also met with management and employees to learn about the company and how it executes luxury on a daily basis.

“This was a chance for us to take a step back from learning about luxury and instead experience it ourselves,” said Micoley, of Greenville. “As a polytechnic university, this is a brilliant example of hands-on learning in the realm of hospitality and luxury.”

It was Martinez ��. first time in a luxury hotel. “It was an extraordinary experience. After asking employees about the work environment, it was noticeable how much they loved their job. They explained how much the company takes care of them and it shows,” he said.

“Growing up, I came from a background where my family could only afford economic hotel lodging. Very few times was I exposed to fine dining,” added Martinez, a first-generation student from Reedsburg. “Experiencing this class was beneficial in establishing a foundation in what luxury means – it means discovering the next best thing. And with that, the sky is the limit. Taking these ideals going forward will allow me to create new ways to improve customer service.”

Building connections to interact on a higher level

Through FTG ��. Leading Through Luxury video guides, students learned the elements of an effective service culture, as well as the foundations in food and beverage, spa settings, front office and housekeeping.

Students participated in activities to practice Forbes’ principles. They also met with guest speakers, including Robert Sereci, general manager of Medinah Country Club in Chicago; and �� alum Pete Hayda, managing director of sales and marketing at the Little Nell Hotel in Aspen, Colo., who shared about their backgrounds and personal work experiences.

“It was an eye-opener that most of the speakers were Stout alum. It showed us that even though we are a small school, we still can accomplish big dreams,” said Spoden, of St. Paul. “My favorite learning moment was realizing that hospitality will always be a big part of my life.”

Micoley ��. favorite learning moment was going through the Little Nell ��. Forbes evaluation. “There were many standards within that audit that I would never have considered, and it has made me more aware of my actions and communication styles for the future,” she said.

She and Martinez also enjoyed participating in a service energizer, which taught them the importance of daily service excellence practice, including how to approach different scenarios such as requests or complaints, listening to understand and owning resolutions.

“At the beginning of the course, I thought that luxury was only for the rich,” Spoden said. “Now, I know it is more than that. It is knowing the guest ��. name when they walk in the door or knowing special insights about the guest to assure the employee is engaging throughout the stay. Most importantly, it is building a connection and maintaining it during the stay. Going above and beyond, the connection is what makes luxury, luxury.”

Micoley agreed, adding, “The course gave us the opportunity to learn about an entirely different side of hospitality. The lessons we learned are also applicable outside of luxury and honestly changed the way I will communicate with others in the future. I feel that I have a better understanding of how to interact with others on a higher professional level.”

Micoley believes “�� . hospitality degrees do a phenomenal job of providing students with a well-rounded education of this industry, and the course did a great job preparing us for a career in this field since we now understand the true meaning of luxury and the Forbes expectations.

“No other students in the entire world are provided the information we were taught, so we have instantly made ourselves more employable since we have knowledge that employers are looking for. Even for those not interested in hospitality, the skills we have obtained are applicable everywhere.”

Martinez and Michaud graduated on May 6. Micoley will graduate in December and Spoden next spring.

Eric T. Brey, Ph.D., is a Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Stout's School of Management, where his work centers on using consumer insights to develop effective organizational strategies. He has been honored as an AT&T Technology Fellow, served as a visiting professor for the Association of National Advertisers, and was recognized as an extraordinary marketing mind by HSMAI. His insights have appeared in international media outlets such as Forbes, BusinessWeek, China Post, USA Today, the New York Post, the Washington Post, and CBS News. He has received numerous scientific awards for research published in leading journals, including Cornell Hospitality Quarterly, the International Journal of Hospitality Management, Tourism Management, and the Annals of Tourism Research. As a scholar and educator passionate about supporting the industry, he has served as an expert legal witness and collaborated with organizations such as the American Resort Development Association, British Virgin Islands Chamber of Commerce, Dalhoff Thomas Design Studio, Destination Marketing Association International, Empresas Bern, Intercontinental Hotels Group, Institute of Real Estate Management, Methodist Hospitals, RVC Outdoor Destinations, the United States Golf Association, the Women ��. Students, alums receive scholarships and national awards for commitment to property management

Students in the real estate property management program at �� are discovering ways to address the housing shortage in Wisconsin and how to provide resources to renters through their involvement in the Institute of Real Estate Management student club.

A Forward Analytics report stated that more than 225,000 housing units need to be built by 2030 to address Wisconsin ��. growing housing shortage.

According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, 25% of renter households, or more than 195,000 households in Wisconsin, are considered extremely low income. There is a shortage of 126,726 affordable, available rental homes available for low-income renters.

Considering affordable housing in Wisconsin, REPM junior and IREM student club president Glen Jakober, of Colfax, believes that “real estate works best in a free market. Regulation should be aimed at landlords who do not obey existing state laws.”

Jakober thinks IREM is a “fantastic organization to be involved with. IREM believes that good property management matters,” he said.

REPM Program Director Fred Prassas incorporates elements relating to political advocacy into each course. “Real estate is one of the most politically sensitive industries in terms of rental housing and private property rights,” he said. “Practitioners need to be actively engaged in the political environment.

“A famous legislator once said, ‘politics is not a spectator sport.’ We invite the students in the IREM club to participate in political advocacy days at both the national and state levels as a learning experience in issue-oriented political advocacy. These events offer an outstanding opportunity for students to meet lawmakers and foster lasting relationships as future experts in their field,” Prassas said.

A recent article by Forbes explained White House actions to protect renters and promote rental affordability, stating that the call-to-action is aimed at easing the burden of housing costs and improving renters’ quality of life, including actions to increase fairness in the rental market and further principles of fair housing.

The White House ��. actions align with the Blueprint for a Renters Bill of Rights, which provides protection for renters, including safe, quality, accessible, and affordable housing; clear and fair leases; education, enforcement and enhancement of renter rights; the right for renters to organize; and eviction prevention, diversion and relief.

With more than a third of Americans renting their homes, state stakeholders are being rallied to drive further action to protect renters in line with the blueprint, and the Resident-Centered Housing Challenge calls for housing providers and other stakeholders to strengthen practices and make commitments that improve the quality of life for renters, the article added.

The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority, which has financed more than 87,300 rental units since its founding in 1872, has made an early commitment in support of the challenge.

IREM is an affiliate of the National Association of Realtors, which has 1.5 million members. It is committed to creating resources that highlight ways property managers can incorporate resident-centered property management practices in their businesses, the article stated.

�� . REPM program and IREM student club are working to address affordable housing locally. “We’re working with the City of Menomonie and Dunn County on housing solution forums, led by Momentum West. Wisconsin is at the forefront of affordable housing,” said Lecturer John Sobota.

A forum early this spring began with an overview of west-central Wisconsin ��. housing and addressed community-based solutions to housing shortages, housing ��. impact on workforce development, and the construction of both tiny homes and multifamily housing for people of varying income levels.

Program support through private gift

The REPM program is housed in Heritage Hall, which is due for renovation. Private support for the renovation continues to grow, including a gift by Dean Weidner, founder and owner of Weidner Apartment Homes based in Kirkland, Wash.

Recently, Weidner announced a $1,050,000 donation to Stout University Foundation. The donation will also provide up to 20 scholarships a year for five years. First-year and transfer REPM students are eligible for one $5,000 award. The awards are available to new students beginning this fall.

Real estate management program receives $1M donation from industry partner Weidner

Private support for the renovation of Heritage Hall at �� has continued to grow, highlighted by a new, major donation for an important program.

The Weidner donation raises the amount of private support �� has received for programs based in Heritage Hall to more than $13.5 million.

The Heritage Hall renovation project has received priority approval from the UW System Board of Regents and is ranked No. 1 in the Chippewa Valley and No. 3 for major academic building renovation projects across the UW System.

IREM student club supports future property managers

The IREM student club strives to connect students with real estate and property management professionals and create exposure for students to all possible career pathways within the field.

“IREM offers continuing education, and members can earn IREM credentials by meeting high levels of education, experience and ethics,” Jakober said. “The ultimate goal of the REPM program is for students to never have to look for a job – IREM helps do that based on the people you meet.”

Jakober has always been interested in real estate and appreciates the tight-knit community. “If you want to become a Realtor, real estate appraiser or property manager, the REPM program at Stout teaches you what you need to succeed in whatever sector of real estate you choose,” he said.

Last fall, Jakober and fellow real estate property management students and faculty traveled to Dallas for the Institute of Real Estate Management ��. Global Summit. They also had the opportunity to attend the National Apartment Association ��. convention in San Diego last summer. This summer, they will attend the NAA convention in Atlanta, and in the fall will join IREM at the Global Summit in Toronto.

“Both conventions highlighted the importance of affordable housing across the nation,” Sobota said.

This spring, junior Katelyn Knapp, IREM treasurer, and second-year student Bailey Jacque each received $1,000 scholarships from Building Owners and Managers Association. Jacque also received a scholarship from IREM MN.

Knapp, of Goodfield, Ill., would like to be a property manager in residential or commercial real estate and plans to pursue her Realtor's license as well. Her IREM involvement has given her networking opportunities with industry professionals and possible future employers. “The BOMA scholarship aided me in paying off a semester of school, which I am extremely grateful for,” she said.

Jacque, of Thorp, agreed. “My scholarships have been very beneficial because they allow me to worry less about how I will pay for my education expenses. It gives me peace of mind knowing that professionals in my area of work are eager to support my academic success to give me a possible advantage over others after I graduate,” she said. Jacque has a second major in hotel, restaurant and tourism management.

Two recent �� REPM graduates were also named to the IREM 30 under 30 national list: Tyhler Gallardo (2018) and Pat Lytle (2019). The award acknowledges the next generation of real estate management leaders who have made a significant impact on the industry and in their communities.

Private support for workforce-based programs at Heritage Hall tops $11 million

Private support for the renovation of Heritage Hall at �� has continued to grow, highlighted by a new, major donation for an important undergraduate program.

Dean Weidner, who founded and owns Weidner Apartment Homes based in Kirkland, Wash., has announced a $1,050,000 donation to Stout University Foundation. The gift includes $500,000 for major scholarships benefiting new and transfer students in the real estate property management program.

The gift brings Weidner ��. total support for the program to $2.5 million. He donated $1 million in 2012 to create the Weidner Center for Residential Property Management at Heritage Hall and another $500,000 in 2015 for additional program support.

“Our long-term investment into the real estate property management undergrad program at �� reflects my confidence in the curriculum that is being taught to students; the fact that the educators in the program have prior industry experience and can help to personalize the education with real world examples; and that we’ve seen strong results in terms of the students that have been recruited to our team,” Weidner said “I look forward to our continued partnership with the university and this program for many years to come.”

In the past decade, the company has hired 84 �� graduates and 161 �� student interns. Three spring 2023 graduates will begin their careers with the company.

The donation raises to more than $11 million the amount of private support �� has received for programs based in Heritage Hall. The Heritage renovation project received priority approval from the UW System Board of Regents, is ranked No. 1 in the Chippewa Valley and No. 3 for major academic building renovation projects across the UW System.

This project creates a new, unified home for workforce-critical degree programs in the College of Art & Human Sciences and more.

Other programs, all areas of critical workforce needs in Wisconsin, based in the building include teacher education, counseling, dietetics, food science, and hospitality and tourism.

Weidner Apartment Homes helps Wisconsin meet its affordable housing needs with facilities in 13 cities, mostly in southern and southeastern areas of the state. Overall, the company manages apartment units in 12 states and in Canada.

Programs like the one at �� are important to the industry. “There continues to be strong demand in the residential property management sector for workers to lead the day-to-day operations of the nation ��. numerous multifamily housing communities,” Weidner said.

“To meet that demand, employers like Weidner Apartment Homes have looked toward career pathway programs that focus on applied learning, such as the one at �� to identify, support and target students who are looking to grow their skills and move directly into the workforce post-graduation,” he added.

Chancellor Katherine Frank thanked Weidner for his generosity and ongoing support of ��.

“Mr. Weidner ��. incredible gift to support teaching and learning at �� has already and will continue to impact students’ learning and career trajectory far into the future. He recognizes the value of our distinct approach to education at �� and how this approach produces future leaders in the workplace who positively impact their communities,” Frank said.

Supporting students and REPM program

The new Weidner donation will provide up to 20 scholarships a year for five years. First-year and transfer students in the program are eligible for one $5,000 award — about one-third of the cost for one year at ��.

The awards are available to new students beginning this fall. Students do not have to apply, but will be awarded directly through the Financial Aid office if eligible.

The $550,000 program support portion of the donation includes funding a program ambassador position to help recruit students.

With 60 students, �� . program already is believed to be the largest of its kind in the U.S. Another 27 students are enrolled in the property management minor.

“The workforce of the future requires an adaptable mindset of lifelong learners who continuously upgrade their technical skills as well as the ‘soft’ skills that are valued by employers,” Weidner said. “By partnering with colleges and universities, we can help shape the education of the upcoming workforce and embed the requirements of the industry into the curriculum. In this way, we are helping to create the workers we need, instead of merely trying to find them on the open market.”

�� student Hunter Kuester is an advocate for the blind at the university, state and national levels and was recently appointed to the UW System President ��. Advisory Committee on Disability Issues.

Kuester, of Watertown, believes strongly in educating others and thinks the best way to be an ally and advocate for people with disabilities is to “really listen to their experiences and understand their differences.”

As a member of PACDI, Kuester, who is blind, helps to provide information and recommendations relating to individuals with disabilities to UW System President Jay Rothman. The committee is charged with making recommendations in three major areas:

Policy and guideline implementation
Procedures for periodic reporting of data regarding disabilities
Disability related issues raised by UW System Administration, universities or units.

PACDI promotes issues to provide a supportive environment for students with disabilities, most recently promoting access to assistive technology and the implementation of a universal design.

“My aim is to help the UW System understand fully what accessibility means and to make renovation recommendations, taking disability and accessibility into account,” said Kuester, who is a double major in hotel, restaurant and tourism management; and real estate property management.

Ann Murphy, director of �� . Disability Services, is a member of PACDI. One of this year ��. initiatives is to roll out the Digital Maturity Assessment Survey, as a part of UW System ��. commitment to inclusion, equity and compliance.

“Each UW university will complete the survey – a self-study, looking into how they’re supporting digital accessibility and where they need to grow,” she explained, giving students access to JAWS screen readers and Braille displays for websites as examples.

Murphy, who recommended Kuester to the committee, said “PACDI was looking for a student candidate who has lived experience with one or more disabilities and/or who is a strong ally for accessibility.

“Hunter is a clear leader and is very involved with leadership opportunities and organizations. He has a lot to contribute and is very effective in using his voice to advocate for people who are blind and who have disabilities. He ��. a big picture thinker and an impressive student,” she said.

PACDI also likes student representatives to have the endorsement of their student senate, which Murphy helped facilitate with the Stout Student Association. SSA represents and advocates for students with disabilities on campus to foster an inclusive environment for all students.

Kuester ��. endorsement then went to John Achter, director of Student Behavioral Health with the UW System and liaison for PACDI, for consideration before being appointed by Rothman. A similar process was followed for another student representative, who is from UW-Whitewater, Achter said.

“Hunter is a dedicated student leader, especially on matters surrounding accessibility and accommodation,” said SSA President Cody Gentz. “His dedication to advocacy and leadership experience made him a natural choice to be the Stout Student Association's nominee. I was excited to see him officially appointed. I know he has been, and will continue to be, a vital student voice in this space.”

Kuester ��. is a two-year term, which started on July 1, 2022, and will run through June 30, 2024. He plans to graduate in December 2024 or May 2025.

University and national roles

Kuester is a special projects coordinator with �� . Disability Services, which supports about 700 students each year. The office initially connects with students at First-Year Orientation and Registration, when students can identify if they have a need. Faculty can also make a referral for students needing accommodations.

As a student staff member, Kuester ��. role is to bring forward different accessibility issues he encounters around campus.

“Hunter helps to let us know what we can do to make navigating campus easier,” Murphy said.

When Kuester transferred from Minneapolis Community and Technical College to ��, he lived in North Hall, which was recently remodeled. “But even after the new renovation, there were no Braille signs,” he said. “Nothing was labeled – not the rooms, bathrooms or facilities.”

Heritage Hall, where most of his classes are held, had no Braille signs either. Heritage was built in the 1970s, pre-Americans with Disabilities Act, which passed into law in 1990. Heritage Hall is scheduled for major renovation, expected to begin as early as fall 2025.

Facilities Management has worked with Kuester and Disability Services to make improvements on campus. Justin Utpadel, senior facilities officer, noted Kuester ��. influence on the corrected signage design for North Hall, which will influence the South Hall signage, currently in the final approval process as the building is being renovated. Heritage Hall plans are in the predesign stage, but plans include a space for the Disability Services office, which will relocate from its current space in the University Library.

Kuester also found that the Braille signs in Memorial Student Center and Merle M. Price Commons were often incorrect. He and a co-worker collaborated with Malinda Hebert, Student Centers associate director, to correct signage. They used a Braille label-maker to add missing signs, correct signs and add the function of certain rooms, such as meeting rooms. “I very much appreciated his efforts,” Hebert said.

As the former senator of Accessibility and Accommodation with the Stout Student Association, Kuester is working with Facilities Management to install additional exterior lighting on campus, specifically around the residence halls and popular campus areas.

Members of the SSA collected data and student surveys about campus safety, including lighting, cameras and traffic control, and have asked for lighting improvements to be included in the South Hall renovation project, said Fiona Lindsay, SSA vice president.

The Campus Exteriors and Development Committee is holding its annual campus night walk on Tuesday, March 21, to assess the grounds and exterior spaces for aesthetics, lighting, visibility and overall safety.

Kuester is working on an advocacy presentation for students with disabilities. “I want to help them gain confidence and learn to advocate for themselves,” he said. “I can be a voice for students now and for students after me, making campus more accessible for them.”

Kuester is also involved with the National Federation of the Blind and recently attended the annual Washington Seminar, in Washington D.C. During the yearly event, the federation meets with representatives to help pass legislation for accessibility and equal opportunities for the blind. One of this year ��. priorities was website accessibility, Kuester said.

A passion for hospitality

As a double major in hotel, restaurant and tourism management; and real estate property management, Kuester has a passion for hospitality.

Last summer, he was a premium services management intern with the Milwaukee Brewers. Employed through Delaware North, Kuester worked in the food and beverage services during game day and nongame day operations at the ballpark.

“It was a good experience, dipping my toes into hospitality,” he said.

Kuester plans one day to open his own distillery and appreciates all of the different types of spirits. “It ��. an art form – a very long process. I like to put a smile on people ��. faces,” he said.

We’re here to represent YOU, the student. The Stout Student Association is the student government at the University of Wisconsin-Stout. Granted authority under Wisconsin State Statute 36.09(5), we have the authority to represent the entire student body on issues surrounding student life, services, and interests.

You become a member of the Stout Student Association simply by enrolling at ��. This means that you can get engaged with campus right away! All students are eligible to run for positions or vote in elections and referendums, and each fall there are a variety of open positions that can be filled by students. By getting involved with the Stout Student Association, you can make and meet other passionate student leaders and integrate yourself into the heart of the University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Our Mission

The mission of the Stout Student Association is to elevate student voices and to protect the rights student hold in the governing of the university. Since our inception in 1923, we have been a student-led organization advocating for students.
