Future teachers organize on-campus competition for high schoolers

While the 2026 DECA District I Career Development Conference was held just over a week ago, students in �� . marketing and business education program are already planning next year ��. event.

For 54 years, �� has hosted the conference, which prepares high school marketing students for future careers by challenging them to apply critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills to individual and team events. Likewise, �� students in the Marketing and Business Education Association (MBEA) are challenged to develop and coordinate the conference, which drew more than 500 students from 18 regional high schools to campus on Jan. 10.

“The most challenging aspect of the DECA event is preparing to implement a large-scale conference,” said Professor Debbie Stanislawski, program director for B.S. marketing and business education and adviser to the MBEA. “Coordinating logistics and ensuring everything runs smoothly requires significant planning and teamwork.”

Among those doing that coordinating this year was senior Ali Hruby, a marketing and business education major from Kennan. She agreed that the immense amount of time and effort required to organize the event are a challenge. “However, I really enjoy working with my colleagues during the setup process and seeing the conference run successfully,” she said.

Through chapters in high schools and colleges worldwide, DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. It has over 250,000 members in more than 3,900 high school chapters and 203 collegiate chapters. At the district event, participants competed in 20 individual and eight team events, encompassing topics such as accounting, entrepreneurship, business finance, restaurant and food service management, retail merchandising, sports and entertainment marketing, and more.

More than 500 students from 18 area high schools attended the Jan. 10 conference at ��.

Twelve-month effort

But long before the day of the conference, �� students had been hard at work for months, embodying the university ��. polytechnic mission by applying their skills to plan all aspects of the conference.

“Volunteering for DECA at �� is an incredible opportunity for marketing and business education majors,” said senior AnuTye Her of Eau Claire, president of the �� MBEA. “It allows students to gain valuable insight into how DECA operates while experiencing it from an adviser ��. perspective.”

After evaluating the just-completed conference, student organizers will make plans for the following year, including securing access to Memorial Student Center. Once the fall semester begins, MBEA members and officers will meet biweekly to keep the process moving.

Stanislawski said that coordinating the event “requires a diverse set of skills that mirror the real-world demands of teaching, advising and leadership.” MBEA students must do everything from implementing registration systems and setting prices to ordering awards and organizing opening and closing sessions — which includes securing keynote speakers and even making speeches to the attendees themselves. During the conference, she added, �� students help run the competitive events, facilitate social activities, make sure the awards ceremony goes smoothly and more.

�� freshman Victoria Birnschein was one of numerous marketing and business education majors who helped at the conference.

Hruby has helped plan the DECA conference for two years. “The day of the event is very busy and fast-paced,” she said. “We begin by making sure everything is set up and ready to go. As schools arrive, students gather in the Great Hall for the welcome session. Throughout the day, we help direct students, troubleshoot issues and ensure the schedule stays on track.”

This year, as social coordinator, Hruby helped keep the high school students occupied as they nervously awaited the events’ results. “My favorite part is watching students participate in their competitions and then seeing their excitement during the awards ceremony when their hard work is recognized,” she said.

Shaelee DeWitt, a sophomore marketing and business education major from Mondovi, said the conference was a hectic but fun-filled day. Though she was a first-time volunteer, not only did DeWitt help introduce keynote speakers, including Chancellor Katherine Frank, but she also helped tabulate competitors’ scores.

“I am excited for DECA Districts 2027 and can’t wait to make some improvements from this past year to make it even better experience for the students,” she said.

Winners and runners-up in each category advanced to the State Career Development Conference competition from Monday, Feb. 23, to Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa in Lake Geneva.

Embodying the polytechnic approach

For Stanislawski, one of the most enjoyable parts of the conference is seeing the numerous �� graduates who are now high school DECA advisers. “Watching them lead and teach in their own classrooms is incredibly rewarding — it ��. a real showcase of the program ��. impact,” she said. “These interactions highlight how the hands-on experiences they had as students prepared them to become confident educators and DECA advisers, which is exactly what our polytechnic approach is all about.”

Most gratifying, however, is seeing students — both high school competitors and college organizers — succeed through their roles in the conference.

“This hands-on experience not only provides insight into what it will be like to guide students as future DECA advisers, but it also aligns with �� . polytechnic mission — giving students practical, real-world preparation for their careers as marketing and business teachers,” she said.

The marketing and business education program is part of �� . School of Education, which offers nine undergraduate and five graduate programs, including on-campus and online options, along with five certificates and three certifications.

Debbie Stanislawski is ��'s Program Director for Marketing and Business Education (MBE). In this role, she provides academic advising to all students in the MBE major, leads curriculum development and implementation, and teaches courses on assessment, curriculum design, and instruction. Debbie also oversees clinical experiences for aspiring educators. Additionally, she teaches leadership courses within the doctoral program and mentors graduate students in career and technical education, guiding them through their thesis and dissertation work. Before joining ��, Debbie gained valuable experience teaching middle and high school business in Wisconsin and Illinois. Her time in the PK-12 education system ignited her passion for preparing future educators. MBE, CTE alum Grinker receives Outstanding WMEA Educator Award

Surrounded by their peers and educators from around the state, three University of Wisconsin-Stout marketing and business education alumni and students were recognized at the BEcoME IT Conference, presented by the Wisconsin Educators of Business and Information Technology and Wisconsin Marketing Education Association:

Alum Traci Grinker received the Outstanding WMEA Educator Award and completed her term as WMEA president.
Ali Hruby received a $500 WEBIT Student Scholarship, presented to her by Shelby Dixon, �� MBE student representative on the WEBIT Board.
Kahlen Outzen received the Emerging Marketing Educator Award and was selected to serve as the upcoming �� MBE student representative on the WMEA Board.

“It ��. truly inspiring to see our students recognized for their dedication, talent and potential. This kind of acknowledgment not only reflects their hard work but also speaks volumes about the bright futures ahead of them,” said Assistant Professor Mike Mills, program director of family and consumer sciences education, marketing and business education and technology education.

Professor Debbie Stanislawski, program director, B.S., M.S., and Ed.D. career and technical education, believes the BEcoME IT Conference is a powerful reminder of how �� . applied learning model prepares future marketing and business teachers for real-world success.

“Through experiences like planning DECA District events, judging at FBLA State, and engaging with professionals at conferences like BEcoME IT, our students build the confidence, skills, and networks they need to thrive as future educators and leaders in the field,” she said. “The conference was really one of those days that really reinforces ‘the why’ to what we do at ��.”

�� . School of Education and the teaching, learning and leadership department are committed to delivering high-quality teacher preparation programs.

“At a time when the value of education is often questioned and alternative licensure pathways are becoming more common, students recognize the importance of earning their Career and Technical Education Teacher Licensure through ��. Our programs prepare future educators not only for a job, but for a meaningful and lasting career in education,” Mills said.

Six �� MBE students were financially supported to attend the conference, held Oct. 16-18 in Wausau, with proceeds from hosting DECA Districts at ��.

Founded in 1965, WMEA ��. mission is to create a culture of learning and sharing within marketing education, to support educators in their roles as professionals, and to advocate for the growth and longevity of the marketing education profession.

Traci Grinker: A career coming full circle

Grinker is a marketing and business teacher in the Medford School District, where she ��. taught for 11 years. She ��. also the DECA and graduation advisor and manages the Raider Cafe & Shoppe school store. Previously, Grinker taught in the Menomonie, Altoona and Colby school districts.

Grinker is a two-time �� alum, having earned her bachelor ��. in MBE in 2009 and master ��. in career and technical education in 2021.

“I knew from kindergarten that I wanted to be a teacher, but I wasn’t sure what kind of teacher until high school, when I started to take marketing classes. It really is full circle because the person who inspired me the most to become a marketing teacher, Mischell Fryar, was actually the person to present me with the WMEA Educator Award,” Grinker said.

Fryar is also a double �� alum, holding an MBE and an M.S. in CTE. She is the WMEA treasurer and marketing teacher at Rhinelander High School.

Grinker hopes to inspire students to learn that marketing and business-related content applies to all students and careers. “I want students to gain the self-confidence to try something new, like a new class or to join our DECA/FBLA chapter,” she said.

As WMEA president, her three main roles were to manage the organization, organize meetings and provide valuable professional development opportunities to members, including the BEcoME IT Conference with the WEBIT organization.

“As president, I wanted to provide opportunities for our members to network with each other and provide an environment in which they are not afraid to reach out to fellow members and board members for any needs. The best part of our organization is the community that we have built. Our members are the most supportive group of people, and we are like family,” Grinker said.

Ali Hruby: Starting her teaching career strong

The $500 WEBIT scholarship will help Hruby pay for tuition, gas expenses for travel to and from her pre-student teaching placements and business-casual clothing. She will student teach next fall and graduate in December 2026.

“Reducing student debt will help me start my teaching career strong and give me the ability to invest in classroom supplies and materials that make learning more engaging for my students,” said Hruby, of Kennan, Wisconsin.

Hruby has had incredible teachers, professors, coaches, family members, and role models who have guided and supported her in becoming who she is today, she said.

“I want to give that same encouragement to my future students and help guide them to find their own version of success. Academically, I find so much joy in seeing students grow and reach those moments when everything ‘clicks.’ Watching the progress students make throughout the day, semester, year or even high school career is what I find the most inspiring aspect of being a teacher,” Hruby said.

Kahlen Outzen: Providing a student perspective

As the college representative for WMEA, Outzen will assist with conference planning and professional development for secondary and future marketing educators. She’ll also provide insight into what secondary and college students may feel more aligned with in the classroom.

Also, as a student from a disadvantaged area where career and technical training were undervalued, Outzen hopes to provide WMEA with insight to understand different educational issues. “I hope I can be a resource for educators on the board who are not from an area like mine and provide some support from a student perspective,” she said.

“I enjoyed my high school CTE classes, so the fact that these classes were undervalued didn’t sit right with me. My MBE teachers, in particular, were ever-changing; this led to a lack of marketing and business education, as well as a lack of professional development, in my school,” said Outzen, who grew up near Milwaukee. “This lack of marketing and business education, and exposure to the business world, leads to a lack of opportunities for high school-aged children, something I would love to make an impact on.”

Outzen wants to introduce her future students to the world of marketing and business in a way that is interesting to them. “I want to be able to spark a passion in those I can, so that they can feel confident in their future careers,” she said. “When I graduated high school, I was unsure of what to do with my future and was, admittedly, very lost. I do not want that for my students. It ��. OK to not know for sure, but I want them to know their options and feel more confident in life after high school, and more confident in their career choices, especially in the marketing and business fields.”

At �� . School of Education, students are engaged right from day one in their teaching area of interest: art education; early childhood education; family and consumer sciences education; marketing and business education; math education; social studies education; special education; and technology education. Mike Mills

Mike Mills is an Assistant Professor of Technology Education. Mike is passionate about Career and Technical Education and what it can provide students. In addition to teaching in the School of Education, Mike will also be doing work outreach and curriculum for fab labs.

Mike joins us from South Dakota where he spent 17 school years teaching high school cabinetmaking/woodworking. During that time Mike also spent 4 years serving as the State Director of SkillsUSA South Dakota. Mike is originally from Osakis, MN which is in the Alexandria, MN area. After graduating high school, Mike attended college in Utah and graduated with a B.S. in Technology Education from Southern Utah University in 2005. During college, Mike worked to gain industry teaching endorsement in cabinetry by working at a cabinet door shop.

Mike completed his student teaching at Uintah Basin Applied Technology College in the high school cabinetry program. Prior to completing his Bachelor of Science degree, Mike graduated with an Associate of Applied Sciences degree in criminal justice from Southern Utah University. After completing his second year of teaching, Mike started his Master of Science degree in Educational Technology and graduated in 2009 from Dakota State University. In August 2023 Mike graduated with his Doctor of Education degree in Educational Practice and Leadership from the University of North Dakota, where he specialized in higher education.

When Mikayla Obsuszt graduated high school, she was unsure of what path she wanted to take in life.

“I explored many different options, and none of them felt right. After analyzing what career options would best fit my natural skill set, I decided to become a teacher,” she said

Obsuszt transferred to �� halfway through her college journey, transferring her general education credits, and beginning her degree in marketing and business education.

“I’ve never been a fan of the common core subject areas, and �� offered a teaching degree in my favorite elective subject area, marketing and business. Stout simply felt like home,” she said.

Transferring did pose a challenge for Obsuszt to stay on track for graduation, packing in all her program-specific courses and taking multiple WinTerm and summer courses as well in a two-year time. But she persevered.

“Mikaya is a shining example of what it means to go above and beyond in the field of marketing and business education. Her contributions have left a lasting impact on the program, leaving her well-prepared to impact learners in her middle and high school classroom,” said Program Director Debbie Stanislawski.

Obsuszt earned her bachelor ��. and crossed the commencement stage on Dec. 14, along with 510 �� graduates.

She signed a teaching contract before graduation with the business department at Lincoln High School, in her hometown of Wisconsin Rapids. She’ll primarily teach personal finance and IT fundamentals.

How well has �� prepared you to work in your field?

When you think about college, most people automatically think about studying, tests and homework. When I look back at my Stout journey, the first things that come to mind are the real-world experiences that I encountered.

Whether it was taking a tour of a local school-based enterprise or prestudent teaching in a culturally diverse classroom, these experiences have given me a head start in my journey as a teacher.

Having previous experiences in these settings has set me up for success when it comes to managing students’ behaviors, brainstorming learning alternatives for students and creating environments that best fit students’ needs.

When a situation arises in my classroom, I will already have a bank of experiences to reflect on and make connections. I will be able to better handle situations in real time when students most need the support.

I am most proud of the completion of my internship at Hostel Shoppe, in Stevens Point. My internship exposed me to marketing-related professional work, helping my ability to give my students examples.

What stands out about your �� experience?

Stout is a school that prepares students to be lifelong learners in real-life situations.

Although there is importance when it comes to conceptual knowledge, Stout strives in creating learning opportunities in real-world situations. There are many opportunities for you to learn while performing the tasks at hand.

You can build skills in settings that you would utilize in post-graduation.

How did your involvement on campus impact your experience?

In spring 2024, I competed at the state WiSys Big Idea Tournament, with teammates Bri Noble and Halle Sullivan. We presented our idea Safe Skin, after participating in �� . Ideation Jam. Safe Skin is a line of base-layer clothing to protect wearers of chemically treated uniforms, like firefighters.

A big idea by three �� students is headed to the state WiSys Big Idea Tournament.

I was involved in the Marketing and Business Education Association and took on leadership roles in planning and executing events of many sorts. We organized and hosted the Wisconsin DECA District 1 competition, cleaned the highway, crafted and donated blankets to those in need, organized professional guest speakers, participated in professional conferences and many other events.

How has your �� experience changed you?

My time spent at Stout pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone, both personally and professionally. It was the first time in my life that I went to a school with more than 100 other students.

This gave me a new perspective on what life “in the real world” would look like. This experience helped me strengthen my ability to collaborate with others on common goals and work successfully in diverse team settings.

While at Stout, I was also approached with many different opportunities to grow as a young professional. I took on leadership roles within my program area, while also building connections with industry professionals through many different conversations, observations and internships.

These opportunities helped me on the path of becoming a teacher, as I am now able to provide my students with real-world stories to help them learn and draw their own connections.

At the same time, these experiences helped me to shape my own personality and belief system. They have helped me to mature my professional and personal values, while also building lifelong connections with many individuals.

More than 450 students expected for Jan. 11 regional competition

�� will host the 53rd annual DECA District I Career Development Conference on Saturday, Jan. 11.

The event kicks off with an opening session at 8:45 a.m. in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall, followed by competition from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., with an awards ceremony at 2:30 p.m. An orientation for judges begins at 8:30 a.m.

The event, organized and run by �� . Marketing and Business Education Association, is an applied learning experience for high school marketing students.

“DECA is a great opportunity for students because it prepares competitors for success in future careers, education and personal growth,” said AnuTye Her, a marketing and business education junior from Eau Claire.

Altoona, Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire Memorial, Eau Claire North, Elmwood, Glenwood City, Holmen, Hudson, La Crosse Central, La Crosse Logan, Alma Center Lincoln, Melrose-Mindoro, Menomonie, Northwestern, Plum City, Sparta, Stanley-Boyd, Superior, Tomah and West Salem.

They will compete in 15 individual and eight team events. Students’ skills are tested in business services, marketing management, hospitality and tourism, marketing strategy, retail sales and services, sports and entertainment marketing, financial services and entrepreneurship.

Winners and runners-up in each category advance to the State Career Development Conference competition Monday, Feb. 24, to Wednesday, Feb. 26, at the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa in Lake Geneva.

“This is also a great opportunity for many �� marketing and business education students because it gives them the background knowledge of DECA related to how the event is planned, and what they can expect as future DECA advisers,” said Her, who is serving as the DECA District 1 coordinator.

“I’ve learned many things while being the DECA Districts coordinator. Connecting with advisers from across the state and networking with different departments here at the university, I’m so grateful to be in this position where I can say that I’ve helped plan a DECA event with amazing people,” he added.

Approximately 70 regional business and marketing professionals are needed as volunteer competition judges.

Judges have the opportunity to connect with and guide marketing and business career-focused high school students while networking with fellow professionals. Judges are provided a light breakfast, refreshments and lunch.  

DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. It has more than 250,000 members in more than 3,900 high school chapters and 203 collegiate chapters.

Ashley Otten came to �� undecided in her major and felt challenged by not knowing what career path was right for her.

But with the support of advisers, professors and her peers, she found that teaching was her passion and the career she was meant to pursue.

Otten immersed herself in professional development, leadership and involvement opportunities to strengthen her skills in the classroom. She received the Wisconsin Marketing Educators Association ��. Emerging Marketing Educator Award in 2022.

After student teaching in Wisconsin Rapids this spring, Otten earned her B.S. in marketing and business education on May 4, along with 1,037 graduates. She is interviewing for positions to begin her career as a teacher.

“I want to work to foster a learning environment that is inclusive, diverse and helps every student find their own personal goals and passions,” she said.

How well has �� prepared you to work in your field and why?

I have had so many amazing experiences at Stout that have helped me grow as a learner as well as a young professional to prepare, adapt and grow my skills for my career in teaching.

Through the opportunities, I have made many connections and am very excited to continue my journey outside of Stout.

Starting my first year, I got involved with the Marketing and Business Education Association. Through MBEA, I was able to attend a wide variety of professional development and learning experiences, including attending four Wisconsin Educators of Business and Information Technology conferences, where teachers talked about their experiences and gave tips to future teachers.

I also helped facilitate three DECA Career Leadership conferences at Stout and saw what being a DECA adviser is like.

As an intern at two DECA State Career Development conferences, I helped facilitate the event and served as the Judges Chair. I had the opportunity to work with the top DECA students in the state, as well as the leadership team which works out of the Department of Public Instruction.

My courses also helped me to grow as a scholar. Pre-student teaching in a classroom solidified my passion for teaching and helped me to better understand the responsibilities of a teacher.

I held a total of three different internship positions during my time at Stout, and many of those opportunities were through connections that I gained from my time at Stout.

What stands out about your �� experience?

I have had amazing professors at ��. The professors in the Education Leadership and Learning department have been a huge part of my success on campus.

They pushed me to do my best work at all times.

I was able to foster my love of teaching in their classes, and I owe a lot of my success to them.

Stout ��. focus on career readiness also stands out to me. I have always loved the polytechnic nature of Stout, and my classes did all of the right things to adequately prepare me for my internships as well as teaching.

How did your campus involvement impact your experience?

I have been able to be involved in many leadership and professional development opportunities, including MBEA, DECA district and state events, Future Business Leaders of America state events and more.

While serving as the social media director and president of MBEA, I took every opportunity that came my way, whether it was attending a conference, observation, fundraiser, volunteering or just an enjoyable evening with friends.

I have received a scholarship through MBEA and a scholarship from the Wisconsin Educators of Business and Information Technology. I found a large community of teachers through MBEA who contributed to where I am today.

I was also a resident adviser for University Housing for four years, which helped me to build so much confidence and foster four different communities of learners.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

Being a student who graduated high school in 2020, the challenges of starting college in that world are near endless. I think some of the biggest challenges centered around finding a connection with peers and feeling like a community on campus.

Being an RA helped with a lot of that. I am extremely grateful for that opportunity because I found some of my best friends there.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

Graduating with a 3.7 grade-point-average, I took every day in stride and worked to develop content in my classes that was professional and worthy of a real life working experience.

I also spent time on campus trying to bring about change. I helped to implement and develop more transparent and anti-bias and anti-racist practices within University Housing.

The thing I am most proud of as I finish my time at Stout is the fact that I did every possible experience and activity I could to grow who I am and to become a confident, passionate and hard-working future teacher.

Graduating in 3½ years with two majors is no easy feat. It ��. often only possible by completing a course load of 18 credits each semester, as well as taking summer and WinTerm classes.

But with a dedication that proves her passion for her future career as a teacher, Monica Miranda earned her degrees in marketing and business education and business administration and graduated from �� on Dec. 16, along with 526 graduates.

She was hired before graduation as a business teacher in the Colfax School District and plans to return to �� in the near future for her master ��. degree.

Both of Miranda ��. parents attended ��, as well as her college-aged siblings. And her grandmother and mother used to work at the University Library.

“I guess you could say that Stout kind of runs in the family,” she said.

How has your �� education changed you and prepared you for your field?

The polytechnic advantage that Stout offers is one of the main benefits that attracted me to attend.

Stout changed my education through the polytechnic opportunities it provided.

At Stout, I was able to be hands-on and experience new things in my majors. The program-specific classes showed me what the marketing and business fields are like now. I was immersed in the education profession through the student organization and educational conferences, where I could connect with individuals in the profession.

What stands out about your �� experience?

The professors. The support, excitement and encouragement that I received from the instructors was surprising and really allowed me to open up to the college experience.

The professors care, and I could feel their support on a personal level on a daily basis.

The community within the university allowed me to build lifelong connections with other students and individuals in the business and education professions. I enjoy a campus that is not too large, where students are still able to feel a sense of community.

How did your involvement on campus impact your experience?

I was involved in the Marketing and Business Education Association, as a member and then as vice president, and was a program ambassador for the MBE major. These extracurriculars allowed me to meet new people and form relationships, to make the university feel more like a community.

I have been a recipient of the Future Fund of Wisconsin Scholars. This opportunity impacted my college experience greatly, as it alleviated some financial stress.

Teach Day encourages high school students to explore teaching career

About a dozen Wisconsin high school students visited University of Wisconsin-Stout on Nov. 15 to learn how they could impact future generations.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

It was a challenge finding a balance between work and school. During COVID, I worked more, as most classes were online, but still had a full course load. I created a time management plan that helped balance the workload.

I think another challenge I faced was overcoming self-criticism. I have a level of perfectionism that I strive to meet, like completing assignments in an advanced timeframe.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I am most proud of the determination and perseverance that I have shown throughout my college career, and to be graduating early with a double major. I am proud of seeing my hard work and dedication pay off.

The relationships that I have made through �� are what made my experience the most positive. The individuals I have surrounded myself with continuously inspire me and encourage me to try new things. Being open to meeting new people was one of the best choices I ended up making.

More than 450 students expected for Jan. 6 regional competition

�� will host the 52nd annual DECA District I Career Development Conference on Saturday, Jan. 6.

The competition is from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Jarvis Hall Science Wing, followed by awards. An orientation for judges begins at 8:30 a.m.

The event, organized and run by �� . Marketing and Business Education Association, is an applied learning experience for high school competitors “to gain valuable knowledge on marketing and business topics while also building interpersonal skills. It allows students to step into a role of a business professional and problem solve a case study,” said Ashley Otten, a marketing and business education senior from Madison.

More than 450 students are anticipated to participate from 22 area high schools:

They will compete in 14 individual and eight team events. Students’ skills are tested in business services, marketing management, hospitality and tourism, marketing strategy, retail sales and services, sports and entertainment marketing, financial services and entrepreneurship.

“This event is also a great leadership opportunity for �� . marketing and business education students to build their knowledge of what being an adviser for DECA will look like,” said Otten, who has served as the Judges Chair for the last three years.

“I have built many connections. Being a judge within DECA is a great opportunity for anyone to learn more about the mindset of our future generation and build their personal business knowledge and insights. I have loved being involved with this event, and I will take all the things I learn into my career,” she added.

Approximately 65 regional business and marketing professionals are needed as volunteer competition judges. To volunteer, register online.

DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management in high schools and colleges around the globe. It has more than 240,000 members in more than 3,700 high school chapters and 200 collegiate chapters.

Becoming a teacher has always been Mikayla Obsuszt ��. career goal. Her parents are teachers, and her first job in high school was at a child care facility, where she learned she loved to help others and wanted a classroom to call her own.

With an interest in marketing, Obsuszt chose the marketing and business education program at �� and recently completed a summer internship, where she gained marketing experience and grew as a future educator.

At the Hostel Shoppe, a cycling store in Stevens Point, she felt the same fulfillment that she finds in teaching, helping people of all ages and abilities experience the joy and freedom of cycling.

“The greatest lesson my internship taught me is that no matter who you are, every individual is capable of doing amazing things with the right support. From a bike store to the classroom, this lesson is important for everyone,” said Obsuszt, of Wisconsin Rapids. “Every task that I completed was done with the idea of helping others. I had a very surface-level understanding of the cycling industry prior to this role, but at the Hostel Shoppe, it is about more than cycling.”

The classroom management and technical skills, as well as networking opportunities she gained in her marketing and business education classes and conferences, helped prepare her for the internship.

“Completing this internship has not only allowed me to develop my marketing skill set but has encouraged me to enhance my soft skills as well,” she said. “Having real industry experience that you can transfer to the classroom is extremely important when becoming a marketing and business educator. With experience, you are able to give real-world examples to your students.”

Making learning relevant for her students

The Hostel Shoppe hosts a series of events each summer. As a marketing intern, Obsuszt promoted the events through press releases, social media posts and email campaigns. She also organized registration information and added product to the website.

While taking photos at the Adaptive Cycling Clinic, she was approached by an individual who was interested in finding a recumbent trike to fit his needs.

“My instincts kicked in, and I started to show him different options. Not only did I learn a lot in this moment about sales, but I also learned how amazing it is to see a smile on someone ��. face as they gain back a sense of independence,” she said.

“I feel that Mikayla has a very patient, understanding, empathetic and encouraging temperament, which is necessary for being a good teacher,” said Jessie Bostic, marketing manager at the Hostel Shoppe.

Obsuszt believes that her experiences at �� and in her internship have prepared her for her own classroom. “I now have a personal inventory of situations and examples that relate to marketing and business to share with my students. They have helped me to appreciate and love the role of a teacher,” she said.

Professor Debbie Stanislawski, MBE program director, agreed.

“Mikayla gained valuable firsthand experience with digital marketing techniques that will provide her with examples to make learning relevant for her future middle and high school students. We encourage all future marketing and business teachers to leverage their summer employment to prepare for developing industry relevant curriculum,” Stanislawski said.

Obsuszt thinks that the more opportunities she has to experience what it's like to be a teacher and the more experiences she can have working in other industries, the more she will solidify her passion for teaching.

“This appreciation will help me enjoy my time in my own classroom and help me see every situation that arises as a blessing,” she said.

Obsuszt will student-teach in fall 2024 and will graduate that December.

Before graduation, Joanna Lee was hired as a business teacher at Baldwin-Woodville High School.

“I am very excited to start this new chapter of my life and have a classroom of my own,” she said.

Lee earned her marketing and business education degree from �� on May 6, along with 1,173 graduates.

Lee ��. goal coming to college was to graduate in four years, but she learned that with student teaching, MBE was a 4½-year program. By enrolling in summer and Winterm courses, she met her goal.

“Working hard to complete my degree is something that I am very proud of,” Lee said. She completed her student teaching at Cumberland middle and high schools, and in St. Croix Falls.

“There is no doubt that Joanna ��. commitment to preparing through being involved and developing her leadership skills has her ready to hit the ground running,” said MBE Program Director Debbie Stanislawski.

How have your �� education and experience changed you?

My experience at Stout has taught me many things, one of those being it is OK to be yourself.

Being able to express who I was and who I wanted to be, while learning about the things I loved, was one way Stout shaped me into a better version of me.

Stout always made sure to create a safe environment for everyone who wanted to explore new hobbies and activities, which is something that I have learned I want to provide for my students someday. Having that safe environment for students is so important and was something that Stout helped to change my perspective on.

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

With all of the experiences Stout has provided me, I feel confident going into my first year as a teacher.

From my first semester at Stout I was writing lessons and learning about different classroom techniques I could use in the future. I took many different classes where I would have the opportunity to learn about different types of students I could have in my classroom. I had opportunities to visit classrooms and get real hands-on experience with students.

What stands out about your �� experience?

I had many professors who opened the door for opportunities.

The staff and faculty at Stout have provided a caring learning environment where I have felt safe to ask questions or go to the staff whenever it was needed. Having educators that make you feel welcomed helps to be more engaged in class and has improved my overall learning experiences.

Though one stands out to me – Debbie Stanislawski has done an outstanding job to push me to be the best student and future educator I could be. She has encouraged me to get involved, helped me to learn and was always there if I was struggling in a class.

How did your involvement impact your experience?

I was very involved in the Marketing and Business Education Association, where I held many officer positions. This organization has provided me with countless opportunities and helped me to grow into the leader I am today.

MBEA allowed me to travel to Chicago for a national conference, judge FBLA and DECA state competitive events, and meet many MBE teachers from around the country. This fall, I will have my own FBLA chapter to lead and motivate.

MBEA has helped me with receiving scholarships, where I was honored to meet members of the Searle family. I also received a scholarship from the Goodman family; the MBEA board; and LeRoy and Elaine Thomas Charlick. I was honored to be chosen for these scholarships.

How did you overcome the challenges you faced in earning your degree?

The pandemic made being a student very challenging, especially a student who was going to teach in a classroom one day. Though online learning was very different than what I was used to, I am thankful to have had this experience.

Being a future educator, learning how the students were impacted by the pandemic firsthand as a student myself helped me a lot in the classroom. Having the option and flexibility to teach online if students ever need it, is something that I will always be fortunate to have learned.

Close to 450 students expected for Jan. 7 regional competition

�� will host the DECA District I Career Development Conference for the 51st straight year on Saturday, Jan. 7.

The event, organized and run by the �� Marketing and Business Education Association, is an applied learning experience for high school competitors and �� students.

The competition is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Memorial Student Center, followed by awards. An orientation for judges begins at 9 a.m.

Approximately 65 regional business and marketing professionals are needed as volunteer competition judges. To volunteer, register online.

Nearly 450 student participants from 20 area high schools are registered. The schools are:

They will compete in 19 individual and eight team events. Students’ skills are tested in business services, marketing management, hospitality and tourism, marketing strategy, retail sales and services, sports and entertainment marketing, financial services, and entrepreneurship.

Winners and runners-up in each category advance to the State Career Development Conference competition Monday, Feb. 27, to Wednesday, March 1, in Lake Geneva.

“The conference concurrently prepares the university ��. marketing and business education majors to become teachers while benefiting high school competitors,” said Professor Urs Haltinner, director of �� . doctorate degree in career and technical education and an event coordinator.

DECA has 215,000 members in 3,500 high school chapters and 275 collegiate chapters.

“DECA prepares youth for career pathways in marketing, business management and administration. It is the premier career and technical student organization serving marketing programs in high schools and colleges around the globe,” Haltinner added.

�� offers a bachelor ��. degree program in marketing and business education as well as the most extensive array of career and technical education teaching degrees in the UW System.

The marketing and business education program is part of �� . School of Education, which is in Heritage Hall. The near-50-year-old building is scheduled for major renovation after receiving priority approval from the UW System Board of Regents. The project is ranked No. 1 in the Chippewa Valley and No. 3 for UW System academic buildings.
