Scholarships, graduate assistantships support students in educational, career goals

Growing up as a Hmong American, Melissa Chang was unaware of the mental health and therapy professions.

Now, pursuing her master ��. degree in marriage and family therapy at ��, “Two of my biggest career goals are to serve the underserved and to continue destigmatizing mental health and therapy in the Hmong American communities,” she said.

To aid her in reaching her career goals, Chang recently was awarded a Mental Health Workforce Development scholarship by the Wisconsin United Coalition of Mutual Assistance Association.

“It is an honor to have received the scholarship,” Chang said. “It has lifted off some of the financial burden of graduate school and allows me to focus on my education as a helping professional, a current therapist intern, a future therapist-in-training and licensed therapist. It will impact my self-growth and my exploration in the helping field for years to come.”

Chang, of Schofield, became aware of the therapy field during her undergraduate in human development and family studies at ��.

Her interest was sparked during a Skill Training for Individual and Family Interventions class, where she learned about the basic skills therapists develop and utilize.

“I was completely amazed by this class. All I could think about was how cool it would be to have a career where I get to talk to people,” said Chang, who graduated with her undergrad in spring 2022.

“What initially drew me into the marriage and family therapy field was the human connection; I really just wanted to be a safe person that others could feel comfortable talking to. I found myself energized after having conversations with individuals, and these conversations made me feel like I was helping in some way,” Chang said.

“As I have progressed in the MFT program, I still find that my biggest passion continues to lie in creating a safe space for people to express their emotions,” she added.

Program Director Kevin Hynes believes, “Melissa is a great example of an undergraduate from Stout finding a path through her classes to determine her career goals and then pursuing it at Stout in a graduate program. We are excited to have Melissa in the MFT program and recognized for the Mental Health Workforce Development scholarship.”

Chang is a graduate-level therapist at �� . Clinical Services Center and therapist intern at Adulteen Counseling, in River Falls. She serves as a therapist, practices co-therapy with cohort members, develops treatment plans, learns about the diagnoses process, and participates in individual and group supervision.

“I have learned so much in the roles, but I would say that my favorite thing is talking with people and creating a fun and comfortable environment for people to open up about topics that are important for them to discuss,” she said.

Chang will graduate this May. She is remaining flexible with her postgraduate goals, including pursuing her Ph.D. or opening a private practice one day.

WUCMAA, a nonprofit coalition established in 1986, strives to create awareness of and solutions for the evolving needs of the Hmong and Southeast Asian communities throughout Wisconsin.

Scholarships, graduate assistantship opportunities abound at ��

�� offers financial aid in several forms, including Stout University Foundation scholarships and graduate assistantships.

Foundation scholarships are open to full- and part-time undergraduate and graduate students. For the 2023-24 academic year, the Foundation awarded $1.2 million in scholarships to 541 students.

Applying is easy, and one application qualifies a student for any Foundation scholarships where they meet the criteria. The application deadline for 2024-25 scholarships is Monday, Feb. 5. No letter of recommendation or essay is needed.

�� . Financial Aid office reported 580 students have received more than $1.5 million in external scholarships, such as the WUCMAA scholarship, so far this academic year. Last year, 636 students received more than $1.8 million.

Graduate assistantships are paid, on-campus positions. Graduate students gain valuable professional experience in research relevant to their field of study, adding to the value of their overall education experience and making them more attractive to employers.

More than 80 opportunities are available with academic programs and administrative units each year, with 62 graduate assistants in positions so far in 2023-24. Appointments range from 320 to 640 hours. GAs are coordinated through the Graduate Studies office, and openings are posted on Handshake.

The MFT program typically supports one to two assistantships per year. Students fulfill a vital role in learning and providing clinic administration, while supporting faculty. The program is in �� . counseling, rehabilitation and human services department, which offers four undergraduate and five graduate degrees, as well as three certificates.

Cherie Mandel always knew she wanted to work with children and families. She earned her associate degree in early childhood education but wanted to continue her education to help families differently.

Mandel achieved her goal and earned her bachelor ��. degree in human development and family studies from �� on Dec. 16, along with 526 graduates.

She will continue in her current role as an early childhood educator and is also looking into positions where she can better use the skills and knowledge acquired in her degree.

How has your �� education changed you?

I have gained so much knowledge that will help me not only professionally but personally as well.

The knowledge and skills I learned through my courses have been especially helpful in expanding my understanding and supported me in my work of helping others. The course content clarified the deeper reasons behind behaviors and beliefs. Many courses focus on being culturally aware and sensitive.

I am grateful for the opportunities to challenge my thinking and push me out of my comfort zone. These topics aren’t always easy, but they can lead to great change.

I have also increased and improved my communication with others. I pause and consider how and what I want to say before talking, and I use those skills to support the team. I have improved my time-management skills, as well as my critical-thinking skills.

I am also grateful for my internship as it gave me hands-on work experience, helped me apply theories and knowledge I learned in my courses and allowed me to develop meaningful professional skills and connections.

What stands out about your �� experience?

I want to thank all the wonderful professors and staff I have worked with at Stout and in the HDFS program who have gone out of their way to help me succeed. From answering emails, meeting over Zoom to discuss program progress, answering questions regarding course scheduling, and offering constructive feedback that supported and encouraged my understanding. I am grateful for the interactions and relationships formed.

The professors truly care and want each student to succeed. Their passion and support were evident of that.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

My journey to Stout wasn’t always a straight path. I lost my mom to breast cancer when I was 10 years old. A few years later my dad ��. degenerative heart disease worsened, and he was no longer able to work. My family struggled to make ends meet, and I began working at age 16.

Financially, I knew I had to continue working full-time while attending school. To receive my financial aid, I also had to attend school full time. Working and attending school full-time took a toll on me both physically and mentally, with many long nights and weekends spent doing readings, working on projects or doing discussion boards.

Focusing on the goal and wanting to help people pushed me to continue and earn my degree.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

While it wasn’t always easy, I am proud of myself for continuing to work hard and achieve my goal. I know those around me are proud, and my mom would be proud as well.

I am proud of my determination and the work I put into my degree. Working full time while also attending school full time was not easy, but being able to complete my degree while maintaining a 4.0 GPA and continuing to make time for myself, friends, family and work is something that I am very proud of.

I am also proud of the confidence and growth I have seen within myself professionally. I feel more confident sharing ideas and take value in seeing my ideas come to life. I have a new appreciation for feedback and constructive criticism as it helps me grow and fully grasp concepts and ideas.

With degree in human development and family studies, Vang hoping to pursue master ��., have greater professional impact

After earning an associate degree in early childhood education, Pa Chie Vang was excited to pursue her passion — working with children.

She became a teaching assistant at a 3K Head Start classroom in Menomonie but soon realized how much further she could go in the field and how many more people she could impact with a bachelor ��. degree.

She transferred her credits from Chippewa Valley Technical College in Eau Claire to �� to enroll in the bachelor ��. online program in human development and family studies. Two years later, on May 6, she graduated. Now, the mother of 3 is planning to return to the classroom in the near future to earn a related master ��. degree at ��.

“The �� courses did not just impact my professional development but also my personal development as well,” said Vang, from Menomonie.

“Obtaining my bachelor ��. in the HDFS program has opened up the door to multiple career possibilities and given me the opportunity to explore policies that impact families, and learn more about nonprofit organizations that work toward the greater good of educating families, community-building and advocacy.”

The transfer process was easy and the support from professors and staff throughout her experience at �� “exceptional,” Vang said.

About one-third of �� . students are transfers, who benefit from agreements the university has with all Wisconsin technical colleges, seven Minnesota community colleges and other colleges. For transfers hoping to attend �� this fall, enrollment is open through early August. Learn more about transferring.

“All the amazing professors I had made me feel safe enough to be vulnerable and share my own experiences so that I could grow into the person I am today professionally. I also am grateful for the MSS (Multicultural Student Services) advisers who listened to my financial concerns and provided me with resources,” Vang said.

Vang ��. parents emigrated from Laos to the U.S. in 1987. She is determined to make the most of her opportunities to honor the sacrifices they made but also, through her education, to support those who grew up in similar circumstances.

“I grew up in poverty. I watched my parents struggle to make it and raise eight children the best they could in a country that made them feel like they didn't belong. Yet, they remained humble and are grateful for the opportunity to come to America so that their children could dream beyond barbed wires and closed metal gates,” Vang said.

While finishing her degree, she worked full time as an English language paraeducator in the Menomonie school district. She also worked part time as a youth development specialist in Menomonie at the Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Chippewa Valley.

“I am part of marginalized and underrepresented populations. I was a Head Start child, as well as a Head Start parent when I became a parent. Working in the center (3K program) helped me realize that even though I love working with children, my passion was in working with families as they navigate socioeconomic hardships, parent education and access to resources,” Vang said.

Head Start is a federal program that supports low-income families.

“I am determined to better understand my own upbringing and the hardships my parents endured, as well as to gain more knowledge in working with families, especially those in marginalized, underserved and underrepresented populations and groups.”

Committed to supporting transfer students

Another May 6 graduate who began as a transfer student was Cecilia Knudsen, of Lino Lakes, Minn. She began her higher education journey at Anoka-Ramsey Community College.

Her degree is in graphic design and interactive media, a program offered on campus.

“My years at Stout were no doubt exactly where I was meant to be and helped me develop into a lifelong student,” said Knudsen, who received several scholarships and was a member of the Blue Devil Dance Team.

“I am continuing to grow into a well-rounded and open-minded individual ready to continue to make an impact on the lives of others wherever I go.”

Turning the corner on their careers: Transfer students finding the right path

The path to a bachelor ��. degree isn’t always a straight one from high school to four years at a university.

Hi, I'm Darren, the Associate Director of Admissions for Transfer & Articulation. My time at �� began as a first-year advisor in the Advisement Center in 2017. I helped students navigate their transition to college, develop academic skills, and plan for future semesters at ��. I transitioned to Admissions in January 2023 and really enjoy working with students as they pursue their dream of earning a Baccalaureate degree.

Advice for a new student:
Get involved in student organizations early in your college career. This involvement can help you find out what you are passionate about and will help you make friends on campus.

College Major/Minor:
I earned Bachelor of Science degrees in both Economics and Business Administration (double major) from UW-River Falls in 2015 and a Master ��. degree in Student Affairs Administration from UW-La Crosse in 2017.

Why did you choose your major?
As an undergraduate I was highly involved in student organizations, especially a service organization called Destination. It was through leadership roles in the Destination program that I learned that I loved working with college students and enriching their college experience. Because of this, early in my undergraduate career, I knew I wanted to pursue a master ��. degree in Student Affairs Administration. My credits as I explored different majors and through transfer made Economics and Business Administration the best fit for an undergraduate college major.

What do you love most about ��?
I love the welcoming atmosphere that �� provides. Your professors, student support staff…everyone working at Stout is here to make the college experience enjoyable and fulfilling for students.

My favorite thing to do in Menomonie is…
Besides attending �� athletic events I am a huge foodie. I love checking out the various restaurants in town and one of my favorites is right across from campus – Log Jam!

A random fact about me...
Within the Destination program during my undergraduate college experience I was trip leader for several service trips. Two of those trips gave me the opportunity to travel to the Dominican Republic and teach English. Other experiences included travelling twice to Moab, UT and traveling to New Orleans, LA to assist with hurricane relief.

Kacey King overcame many personal challenges and life events while earning her B.S. in human development and family studies from ��.

“There were so many points throughout college that I questioned my ability to overcome these challenges. I often wondered if I could be at the point I am today academically, professionally and personally,” she said.

But on May 6, along with 1,173 fellow graduates, King earned her HDFS degree and will be continuing her education here this fall as she enters the M.S. marriage and family therapy program.

“This graduate program was my top choice, and I’m beyond excited that I get to stay at this wonderful university and in the Menomonie area too,” King said. “I’m proud of everything I’ve had to overcome in my personal life to succeed and get my degree. It makes me quite emotional to reflect on how far I’ve come and the work I’ve put in to be where I am now.”

“Kacey has worked so hard to get to where she is and the experiences she has had. Her story is definitely a Stout Proud story. She loves being here and is so happy to be continuing with her graduate education here,” said King ��. faculty mentor, Amanda Barnett.

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

Stout has helped me build on my confidence as a professional, through both my internship experience and the polytechnic aspect of learning. I’ve had the opportunity to apply the information I’ve learned in a safe and supportive environment during my internship and through course activities such as presentations, observations and role-plays.

My internship has helped me grow significantly as a helping professional, and the experience has been so fulfilling and rewarding.

I interned as a case facilitator at the Stout Vocational Rehabilitation Institute. I conducted intake calls with clients to assess eligibility for WI DVR services, which help individuals gain or maintain employment. My supervisor and trainers at SVRI have been nothing short of wonderful, and I’m eternally thankful for the support they’ve given me along the way.

I also had the opportunity to complete a research project titled “Accessing Mental Health Services Across the Life Course: Barriers and Solutions” with Dr. Amanda Barnett, which I presented at Research in the Rotunda, in Madison.

All these experiences have given me the chance to learn so much in the helping profession and working with people, which will help me as I navigate my graduate program and my career.

What stands out about your Stout experience?

The main thing that stands out is the faculty from my major. The HDFS faculty mean so much to me and each one of them carries a special place in my heart. Their kindness, support, and dedication to their field and their students have helped me grow significantly as a person and as a professional. Just about every faculty member that I’ve worked with on campus had extended so much patience and grace towards me, which has helped me navigate the college experience.

How have your Stout education and experience changed you?

My experience here has changed me significantly, and it ��. hard to put it into words. I’ve felt at home here at Stout, which has been so deeply meaningful. I’ve grown to be more confident in myself both personally and professionally. I think about who I was when I first came here, and I feel like a completely different person now – for the better.

The faculty, staff and friends I have at Stout believe in me and care about me as a person. Without the supportive environment I’ve had here, I know I wouldn’t be who I am today.

How did you overcome the challenges you faced in earning your degree?

First, there was navigating college throughout the pandemic. I felt so disconnected from my professors and peers during this time, which made school difficult in a lot of ways. As someone who ��. going into a field working with people, I love being around others and I thrive off social interaction. Not having that during the pandemic was difficult. I made accommodations, such as doing activities and connecting with friends virtually, but it wasn’t easy.

Also, I’ve really struggled with my mental health throughout college. I’ve also had some personal and family conflicts that have made school extremely difficult at times. I’ve overcome these challenges by going to therapy and using the tools from that to grow. Working on my mental health has by far been the hardest thing I’ve done, though the work has been so worth it.

How did your involvement impact your experience?

I’ve been a part of the Stout Ambassadors Club throughout my senior year, which has given me the opportunity to connect with �� alumni and make connections with faculty and students. This club also provided me with volunteer experiences on campus to connect with individuals throughout the UW System.

I have worked at the Instructional Resources Service office since my freshman year and have been a student supervisor there since my sophomore year. Recently, I was nominated for a student leadership award due to my work at IRS, which is an absolute honor to me.

These experiences have added so much value to my time at Stout. They’ve helped grow my leadership skills and overall confidence, helped me connect with people on campus and helped me create meaningful personal and professional relationships that I’ll have for the rest of my life.

Between raising a family and working full time, Pa Chie Vang didn’t think she’d ever go back to school for her bachelor ��. degree.

But after her associate degree in early childhood education and teaching from Chippewa Valley Technical College, Vang returned to school for human development and family studies and graduated from �� on May 6, along with 1,173 graduates.

“It took me a while to get to where I am,” she said. “What I am most proud of as I finish my degree is that even when things got hard in life and I wanted to give up on school, I didn’t. I owe that resilience to the two people I watched growing up who persevered through the trauma of war to give my siblings and I an educated life, even when faced with the adversities of poverty, racism and discrimination.”

Vang plans to earn her master ��. after spending more time with her family. She is currently a youth development specialist with Boys & Girls Club of the Greater Chippewa Valley; and an English learner paraeducator with the School District of Menomonie Area.

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

My Stout education has taught me more about human services, professionalism and the community.

All the professors have provided important learning opportunities for me to enhance my critical thinking skills, my interpersonal skills, my cultural competence skills and professional skills. I am also grateful for all the personal development opportunities that helped me gain a better understanding of self-care and the importance of my morals and values as I work in the human service field.

What stood out the most about my Stout experience was the professors.

I was lucky to have really good professors who were engaging and helpful and gave great constructive feedback to me so that I can grow academically, personally and professionally.

How did you overcome the challenges you faced in earning your degree?

My Stout education taught me how important it is to prioritize and time manage because it can be overwhelming. This was challenging, as I work full time and have a family.

I had to really discipline myself in order to stay on track so that I wouldn’t burn out. I had to start intentionally dividing up my time in my daily planner and blocking off hours after work for homework, family time and self-care.

The other challenge for me was trying to figure out what would work best for me in terms of what kind of learner I am. I am a visual/hands-on learner, so not having a physical textbook in front of me was extremely difficult. I had to learn to use e-books.

Center at the heart of Heritage Hall project provides critical career training through community service

Families from around Wisconsin are facing significant shortages of quality child care programs, caused in large part by a shortage of licensed early childhood staff.

�� is committed to building the state ��. child care workforce through its Child and Family Study Center, School of Education programs and collaborative programs within Heritage Hall and across campus.

Recently, Child Care Partnership conducted a survey on child care capacity related to the early childhood teacher shortage and the impacts in western Wisconsin. Of the 116 licensed group child care centers in the 10-county area, 70% responded to the survey.

They reported having to adjust their capacity because of a shortage of qualified staff. And although the group centers reported hiring almost 600 times in the last 12 months, there are still more than 300 staff positions open. In addition to adjusted capacity, more than 50 classrooms closed, resulting in a loss of more than 1,600 child care slots.

In these counties, waiting lists for families outweigh availability, with 90% of programs reporting a waiting list of more than 4,000 children. And across the state, three or more children compete for every available child care spot, with 54% of Wisconsin residents living in child care deserts.

Without support around the child care staffing crisis, 16% of CCP group child care programs reported they were facing closure due to the ongoing issue of not having qualified staff.

As part of Gov. Evers proposed 2023-25 budget, $340 million would be invested in the Child Care Counts: COVID-19 Stabilization Payment Program, along with $22 million to support the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families’ Partner Up! Program.

Without ongoing financial support through programs like Child Care Counts and Partner Up!, 44% of CCP programs were unsure they would remain in business, and 21% felt they would close in the near future.

Child Care Partnership, a Western Dairyland Community Action Agency program, serves Buffalo, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, St. Croix, and Trempealeau counties and the Ho-Chunk Nation. Its goal is to increase access to consistent, affordable and quality child care services.

University center helping to make a difference

The Child and Family Study Center practices the university ��. polytechnic mission of providing hands-on experiences to undergraduate and master ��. students to prepare them for careers in child care and early childhood education. The CFSC also helps train future teachers, counselors and dietitians through academic instruction, research, classroom observations and service-learning.

This year, 63 children of university students, faculty, staff and community members are participating in CFSC programming. / ��

The CFSC is licensed by the state. Instructional staff teach in five classrooms and labs in two locations on campus: the Infant/Toddler Lab in Heritage Hall, with children 6 weeks through 3 years of age; and the Preschool, with children 3 to 6 years, including the 4K program, in partnership with the School District of the Menomonie Area.

As a National Association for the Education of Young Children accredited program, the CFSC is held to guidelines regarding teacher preparation. It holds a five-star rating in the YoungStar system, which ensures the health and safety of child care in Wisconsin.

“We have a reputation of quality and intentional programming to support children's success,” said Director Allison Feller. “Our qualified staff exemplify excellence and directly impact our program's success. By staying abreast of current research and developments in the field of early childhood education, they mentor future educators who are prepared to enter the workforce.”

This year, 63 children of university students, faculty, staff and community members are in CFSC programming. They represent diverse cultural backgrounds and receive care and learning opportunities for up to 10 hours each day, 50 hours each week.

Each year, the CFSC collaborates with more than 20 programs across campus, with more than 650 university students engaging in professional development practices.

Undergraduate programs represented include early childhood education; art education; and human development and family studies; and master ��. programs include school counseling; school psychology; clinical mental health counseling and nutrition and dietetics.

“We're educating highly qualified candidates for programs when children are at the most critical stage of development,” Feller said.

Kayla Hewitt, an early childhood education alum, is a behavioral therapist with an early intervention program. She works one-on-one with children ages 2 and older, who are on the autism spectrum. Using applied behavior analysis, Hewitt guides children to understand their abilities to their best advantage, so that they may have the most independent life they can.

“My education from Stout has given me the best tools to excel in my position,” Hewitt said. “I use individualization and differentiation every single day. I also utilize the training I received at Stout to create plans for programming, thinking outside the box for creatively presenting new learning objectives while aiming for the most multimodal experience for the child. The skills I learned to help manage classrooms and learning environments, as well as building family relationships and rapport, has helped me to be the best behavior therapist I can be.”

The Preschool building opened in 1971; the Heritage Hall Infant/Toddler Lab opened in 1973.

The Heritage Hall renovation will support building a new CFSC, strengthening state-of-the-art programming and curriculum to keep �� students at the forefront of innovative and evidence-based early childhood services. A newly designed center will also include a common space for faculty, staff, community partners and families to expand existing collaborations and campus initiatives.

The renovation of Heritage Hall, which received priority approval from the UW System Board of Regents, is ranked No. 1 in the Chippewa Valley and No. 3 for major academic building renovation projects. Renovation is slated to begin in 2026.

Community partnerships, campus collaborations benefit multiple stakeholders

The collaborations between the Child and Family Study Center and cross-campus programs offer university students – who are preparing to enter Wisconsin ��. child care workforce – multiple experiential learning opportunities to work with children and families.

Professor Christine Peterson believes the CFSC positively impacts M.S. and Ed.S. school psychology students. They assess 3K students for their clinical practicums to profile preacademic skills at the beginning and end of each academic year.

This collaboration benefits multiple stakeholders, Peterson explained, including the graduate students who receive applied learning experience; and CFSC instructional staff and parents who receive meaningful information about instruction and a benchmark measure of progress. CFSC submits this data annually to the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

“The CFSC stands out on our campus as a model for lab-based programming; it simultaneously serves multiple programs, enhances the applied student experience for not only preservice teachers but multiple other disciplines, and provides a critical community service,” Peterson said.

Clinical mental health counseling Professor Julie Bates-Maves believes �� . labs, like the CFSC, are at the heart of the university ��. polytechnic distinction.

“This indispensable lab brings life to the developmental considerations, attachment theory, and social and emotional development we teach in our courses,” Bates-Maves said. “Having the opportunity to try on one ��. counseling skills with young populations is critical, as is the opportunity to observe developmental expression in person versus simply reading about it.

“The center provides a model of healthy caregiving, allowing our students to further observe interactional styles between adults and children that support emotional development. As emerging professional counselors, our students will educate parents and caregivers on how to support children in the midst of normal development, but also those experiencing developmental crises,” Bates-Maves said.

This spring semester, Assistant Professor Lindsay Heidelberger, program director of M.S. nutrition and dietetics, has connected Professor Deb Sheats to collaborate with CFSC staff to provide master's students in the Nutrition Education and Counseling course with hands-on, polytechnic learning. Students will observe meal times at the CFSC, conduct needs assessments with staff and create nutrition education video lessons for children and their families.

“Having access to the CFSC has been integral to the students’ learning by providing experiential learning in a real-world setting as a nutrition educator,” Heidelberger said.

The Child & Family Study Center (CFSC) focuses on the "whole child" representing all areas of development: intellectual, physical, social, and emotional. The Child & Family Study Center is a university education laboratory school committed to creating a link between educational theory and hands-on practice. ��'s Infant & Toddler Education Lab is a certified childcare center for the university staff, students, and the Menomonie community. Students in the School of Education's B.S. Early Childhood Education program provide childcare for children ages 0-3. Aaron Wisecup, a senior in ECE, assists in and teaches children for nine weeks during the semester.

"We really focus on teaching the children self-help skills and social and emotional skills, like learning to share toys, take turns, and asking friends if they are hurt," Wisecup said.

Working alongside other student staff and experienced faculty, and watching the children progress gives students the necessary experience to benefit in their future teaching careers.

Steele, Williams, Vang enjoying helping children; expanded services in Menomonie kicked off Nov. 14 with ceremony

Three students from �� are helping the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Chippewa Valley take its services to the next level and serve more children in the Menomonie area.

Lyam Steele, of Eau Claire, Jazmine Williams, of Roscoe, Ill., and Pa Chie Vang, of Menomonie, are part-time employees with the new Menomonie Middle School after-school program. In mid-November, a ribbon-cutting was held to celebrate the additional program, which joins the elementary program at River Heights.

“I really enjoy making an impact in these kids' lives,” Steele said. “The smiles I see from the kids when they enter the room is great. They always bring a different story or attitude each day. This really helps me love the work.”

Williams said she is enjoying “being a part of the growing youth in our community and helping them develop into the new generation.”

“The club ��. programs are important because they really do provide kids with an environment that is safe and inclusive,” Vang said.

The ribbon-cutting and kick-off of the program on Nov. 14 culminated several years of planning and fundraising for the Eau Claire-based nonprofit, which has clubs in five area cities.

Community support, including from board members such as �� Chancellor Katherine Frank, donors and the student workers, helped make the expansion possible, said CEO Ann Kaiser.

“The Menomonie community is very supportive of the Boys & Girls Clubs. They see the need for club youth development programs, they understand the value of providing enriching experiences during out-of-school time and they know how it adds to the quality of life,” Kaiser said.

Mentor relationships formed at the club, such as with the �� student employees, “help kids feel confident, build their self-esteem and help them to build perseverance and resiliency as adults,” she added.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the many individuals and businesses whose support made the club ��. opening possible. The need for community support is ongoing, and the return on investment truly is priceless when you think about how these opportunities can change the trajectory of a life. Whether it ��. financial support or volunteerism, we need even more involvement to keep up with the demand for participation,” Kaiser said.

Steele is a criminal justice and rehabilitation major.

As a youth development specialist at the club, he sees the work as a way to gain practical experience in his career field and help children.

“The experience is great to have as I will most likely be working with kids in my future job as a police officer or sheriff ��. deputy. This is also a great way to give back. As a kid, I went to the Boys & Girls Club.”

His duties include helping students with homework, facilitating and supporting program activities and supervising children.

“I also role-model kind, caring and respectful behavior and ensure that kids are using materials and equipment in a safe and positive manner,” he said, with a goal of “making the club a fun place to be.”

Steele and Williams each work between 15 and 20 hours a week. The middle school is about a mile from �� . central campus.

Williams, who is majoring in arts administration and entrepreneurship, is a teen specialist at the club.

“I was looking for an engaging, hands-on job that gave me the opportunity to plan and be a part of the community,” she said.

Along with helping plan programs and supervise children, Williams supports efforts to create an equitable, diverse and inclusive environment at the club.

“I think the program is important because it gives parents more time to work and do outside activities yet engages their youth in doing activities that grow and shape them into who they will one day become,” she said.

Vang is majoring in human development and family studies.

Working 10 to 15 hours a week as a youth development specialist, she enjoys building positive relationships with the children and helping nurture their development.

“It has given me an opportunity to implement what I've learned through my courses about development in children — the emerging adulthood phases. It has been so important to meet them all where they are at in their development and help them either build new skills or enhance their already learned skills so that they can find different ways to problem-solve or try new things,” Vang said.

As a parent, Vang realizes that “it can be difficult to navigate big feelings and changing emotions from little bodies, and this experience has given me an opportunity to assess how I navigate these challenges with my own children.”

Along with the three part-time student workers at the middle school, a �� school counseling graduate student, Tana Prokosch, is a full-time program coordinator for the clubs.

Including Menomonie, the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Greater Chippewa Valley has programs in Eau Claire, Altoona, Chippewa Falls and Black River Falls. Menomonie is the fastest-growing of the five locations.

The middle school program has received a 21st Century Community Learning Center grant, renewable for up to five years. As a result, membership and program fees are waived for children.

Katherine P. Frank became the eighth chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Stout, after a distinguished career as an administrator and faculty member.

Before her appointment as chancellor, Chancellor Frank served from 2016 in two roles at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash., as Provost and Vice President of Academic and Student Life and Vice President of Academic Innovation. She also held the rank of Professor of English.

From summer 2014 until spring 2016, she was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Northern Kentucky University. Frank served as Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Indiana University East, Chair of English and Foreign Languages at Colorado State University-Pueblo, and a faculty member and administrator of programs involving student writing, faculty professional development, and student success.

Chancellor Frank, the first female leader of ��, grew up in Colorado and has a bachelor ��. degree in English from Bates College, Lewiston, Maine. She has master ��. and doctorate degrees in English from the University of Washington, Seattle. Frank ��. research interests include Romantic and Victorian English Literature, rhetoric and composition, the scholarship of teaching, and academic leadership.

“I am delighted to join ��,” Chancellor Frank said. “Throughout the search process, I became increasingly impressed by the high-quality work and creative thinking exhibited by faculty, staff, and students at ��, as well as the strong, reciprocal relationships among the university, community, and regional partners. Everyone demonstrated dedication to the university and exhibited true focus on ensuring student success.

“As beautifully stated by one alumna, ‘Stout is where you need to be.’ I could not agree more and am honored to join this exceptional community of educators, learners, partners, and friends.”

“Dr. Frank has demonstrated throughout her academic career that she is a strategic, dynamic leader,” said UW System President Ray Cross. “She handles challenges extremely well. Her visionary perspective on the future of �� will serve the institution and the state of Wisconsin very well.”

Chancellor Frank and her husband, Joe Dvorsky, live in Menomonie with their three rescue cats. She is an outdoor activities enthusiast, including running, road cycling and mountain biking, and has a love of animals, travel, and adventure.

A group of McNair Scholars pursued a wide range of funded research this past summer and had the opportunity to present their work at a national conference.

The McNair Scholars program supports first-generation, limited income and underrepresented undergraduate students who plan to earn their graduate degrees.

The program also provides scholars with a $2,800 stipend along with its research opportunities.

The four scholars who completed research were:

Heather Dickrell: “Linking Family Dynamics to Foster College Aged Youth Mental Health and Well-being.” Dickrell is a human development and family studies senior from Marengo.
Jordan Kunze: “Impact on Hair of Common Components of Shampoo.” Kunze is an applied science senior from Merrill.
Maddie Olson: “Long-Term Effect of Sports-Related Concussions on Balance.” Olson is a third-year psychology student from Strum.
Michael Wilson: “The Interplay of Resilience, Grit and Self Efficacy on Academic Performance During the COVID-19 Pandemic.” Wilson is a psychology senior from Menomonie.

They were supported by McNair staff and faculty mentors. Kristen Leer, associate adviser with Trio Student Support Services, worked closely with the students, serving as a “writing specialist, helping demystify what research looks like, helping them develop a research paper and personal statements and to design PowerPoint presentations of their research,” she said.

Dickrell, Olson and Wilson presented at the MKN Heartland McNair Research Conference, Sept. 23-25, in Kansas City, Mo.

Dickrell and her mentor, Associate Professor Candice Maier, researched former foster youth's experiences regarding their mental health, well-being, family dynamics and family relationships. Their study participants are attending or have attended a form of post-secondary education, ranging from technical school to graduate school.

“We found our sample, overall, reported mild mental health symptoms, complicated family dynamics and an array of emotions and feelings towards their foster families,” Dickrell said.

For Olson ��. research, she recruited �� students who had a history of concussions, along with a control group with no history of concussions. She obtained 175 participants, with the help of Professor Desiree Budd.

“The results suggested there was a significant negative correlation between concussions and balance,” Olson said.

Support to continue research and the pursuit of higher education

�� . McNair program, which began in 2009, supports about 30 students each year. The program received a new five-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education for $261,888 annually, totaling $1.31 million. The grant will allow the program to continue offering opportunities to scholars to lessen the equity gap in graduate education and to provide support as they pursue their future careers.

Olson feels the McNair staff has helped her grow tremendously.

“Without them, I would have not even known about graduate school, let alone be pursuing it now. I am forever grateful for their hard work and dedication to my academic journey,” she said.

Dickrell thinks the program was a vital support system throughout her research process, providing resources to ensure her success.

“The McNair staff and our mentors guided us throughout the overwhelming process by taking it step by step. We were able to go into the office to get support from their writing specialist and other staff with writing edits and research guidance. With their help, I was able to complete my research by the end of the summer with full confidence and learned a lot,” Dickrell said.

In the past decade, 97% of the university's McNair scholars have completed a research or scholarly activity, and 63% have gone on to graduate school immediately after earning their bachelor ��. degree.

First-generation graduates share tips, advice with first-year students

When it comes to helping precollege students decide on a university or degree program that best fits their interests, career goals and learning styles, the first-year admissions counselors at �� have students’ interests at heart.

And three of the counselors know firsthand what �� offers – hands-on lab and studio opportunities, career exploration with co-ops and internships, collaboration on projects across disciplines and more.

Jeanie Albricht, Nou Lor and Lacey Seefeldt are �� alumni who returned to their alma mater and joined the Admissions Office team to encourage others to become Blue Devils.

With diverse backgrounds and degrees, they bring compassion to their careers and believe that connecting with students and student supporters is the best part of their day. And as first-generation college graduates, they bring a unique perspective to their counseling.

First-Year Registration and Orientation is underway for first-year students attending �� this fall. During FYRO, students work with their adviser, select their classes, pick up their �� laptop and BlueCard, and learn ways to get involved at the university.

A first-generation perspective

Albricht grew up in Colfax and graduated with her degree in hotel, restaurant and tourism management in 2003, knowing that she wanted to work in restaurants. But COVID-19 changed her career path and led her to find a better life-balance for family time working with Admissions. Albricht has been with Admissions for nine months.

“�� had my program. And it was the best in the state and at that time, number four in the country,” she said. She still helps a friend with a catering business now and then to continue part of her passion.

Seefeldt, from Spencer, graduated in 2008 with her degree in psychology. She has been with Admissions for three years. As a high school student, when she was first looking at colleges, she chose �� because of the campus size, calling it the best of both worlds.

“It is such a wonderful, supportive community,” Seefeldt said. “I was a first-generation student and at times didn’t think I could do it – or didn’t think I was worthy of a college education. So, it is incredibly fulfilling in my career to help someone pursue their passion and start that huge, life-changing step of higher education.”

She is thankful for the faculty and staff who were there for her as a student, who advocated for her to receive scholarships, invited her to participate in research and supported her goals beyond college.

“Thank you to those professors that took interest in personally getting to know me and whom I considered friends,” Seefeldt said. “I cannot express how much you changed my life.”

Lor grew up in Wausau and transferred to �� for the human development and family studies program after hearing positive feedback from students and alumni.

She interned with �� Human Resources and later graduated that summer of 2021. She continued to work in HR as a limited-term assistant through the fall and began her career as an Admissions counselor last November.

“I took a shot,” Lor said. “I wanted to stay in higher education. I value education and can relate to high school students.

“Starting college, I had a lack of knowledge about higher education,” Lor said. “As an admissions counselor, I enjoy talking about my own learning experiences and sharing tips and advice with students about higher education. I encourage students to do their research about each institution that they are interested in or, best of all, visit the campus if you can.”

Admissions Director Joan Ebnet was also a first-generation student and knows how important it is to meet students where they are and to create an open and inclusive environment.

“We need to think in our day-to-day work of how we can provide services and support to those students, and all students, in ways that weren’t available when we were in college,” she said.

Ask questions and get involved

The number one piece of advice that Albricht, Lor and Seefeldt give to students is to ask questions and don’t be afraid to ask for help.

“College is an investment in time and money – so don't be afraid to ask questions,” Lor said. “It is okay to not know what you want to do for the rest of your life. You are not alone. Surround yourself in a community where you feel you belong and are safe and welcomed.”

They also like to remind students to get involved in and outside of the classroom.

“The hands-on approach is huge, and there are so many networking opportunities on campus that it ��. easy to find a job within your passion,” Albricht said. “Yes, it ��. college. But you are supposed to enjoy it too.”

Lor agreed. She likes to ask students, “Do you learn better by doing? Stout is a polytechnic institution with three times more labs than classrooms.

"You will get that hands-on experience through activities, being in labs, studios, and using similar machines and equipment like what industries are using.”

Seefeldt thinks that first-year students who get involved can maximize their college experience by taking every opportunity that comes their way – from the performing arts to studying abroad, collaborating on faculty research to joining student organizations.

“Step outside of your comfort zone and do things you’ve never done before, because in 10 years from now those are the things you’re going to remember most,” she said.

University of Wisconsin-Stout Assistant Professor Candice Maier recently received an award for her dissertation on how gender stereotypes can affect intimate relationships.

The National Council on Family Relations recognized Maier as the 2021 recipient of the Jessie Bernard Outstanding Contribution to Feminist Scholarship Paper for her research “Examining Gender in Heterosexual Couple Relationships Utilizing the Biobehavioral Family Model: Implications for Couple Therapy."

Maier, the clinic director for �� . master ��. in marriage and family therapy, was recognized recently at an awards ceremony during the 2021 NCFR annual conference.

Her feminist-informed study sought to add to the existing literature on gender, health and heterosexual romantic relationships with the hope of providing insight to those who practice couple therapy, she said.

Maier is a licensed clinical therapist and has her Ph.D. in couple and family therapy from University of Iowa. She co-wrote her dissertation with her master ��. and doctoral program advisers, Christi McGeorge, of North Dakota State University; and Armeda Wojciak, of University of Minnesota.

“The findings of this study suggest it is important for clinicians to consider the ways in which (cis)gender ideology and stereotypes affect a couple ��. relationship and health and how attending to gendered power issues is a key aspect to helping couples build mutually supportive intimate relationships,” Maier said.

“As a lifelong feminist and licensed couple/marriage and family therapist, this topic has been a longstanding passion of mine, both professionally and personally,” she added.

Intersections of identities

Maier received the award for her excellence in research and contribution to feminist family scholarship. The award is presented in memory of Bernard, a pioneer in the field of feminist family studies, who examined the influence of sexism on women ��. experiences in marriage, parenting and society.

It means a lot to Maier to receive the award and be recognized, along with her mentors. “It adds to an existing body of literature of amazing scholars who have been writing about gender, intersectionality and relationships from a feminist perspective for decades,” she said.

Intersectionality, Maier explained, was a term coined by Kimerlé Crenshaw in 1999. It recognizes the overlapping of social identities and systems of oppression.

“Intersectional feminism is an important part of the feminist movement,” she said. “We cannot talk about gender without emphasizing race, class, sexual orientation, gender identity and ability status amid the intersections of identities that women experience.”

Maier encourages MFT students, faculty and professionals to research topics they’re passionate about and submit their findings for scholarly publication.

“Believe in your work as an important mission in what you do,” she said. “Many of us faculty have received rejections in our careers. It ��. important to continue the drive and motivation, even if you think it won’t go anywhere. Someone needs to hear it.”

NCFR is a nonprofit organization whose members support all families through research, teaching, practice and advocacy. NCFR has a membership of nearly 3,000 family researchers, practitioners and educators.

NCFR ��. family therapy section, of which Maier serves as the student and new professionals representative officer, unites members who share interests, goals and purposes in marital and family therapy.

�� . counseling, rehabilitation and human services department offers five master ��. programs and three bachelor ��. degrees, including the human development and family studies program, which has been reviewed by NCFR. It offers coursework covering the content required for the Certified Family Life Educator designation.
