Students on the collaborative cross-disciplinary team will compete in categories including package production, technical paper publication, technology review, publication production, journal design, T-shirt design and production, and website design. Marketing Communications department announced a competition for students to design a seasonal greeting card for <strong>Chancellor Katherine Frank</strong>, Cater jumped at the opportunity to showcase his graphic and design talents.</span></p><p><span>鈥淚 love the polytechnic educational model and 黑料社区's branding, so a chance to design something for them was a huge opportunity,鈥 Cater said. 鈥満诹仙缜 grows more esteemed in my mind as time goes by. It is an institution of higher education of interdisciplinary and hands-on learning at an affordable cost. Add the talent of students in&nbsp;</span><a href="/programs/bs-graphic-communications" target="_blank"><span>graphic communications</span></a><span>,&nbsp;</span><a href="/programs/bs-digital-marketing-technology" target="_blank"><span>digital marketing</span></a><span> and other degrees, and a student competition was the natural option to showcase their talent,鈥 Frank said.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Cater, who was awarded $250 for his design, wanted his design to involve an individual interacting with something unique, 鈥渁s if a project was just completed,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 wanted to show what a student is capable of bringing to the table.鈥</span></p><p><span>His artist's statement captures his sentiment and visual design:</span></p><blockquote><p><span>鈥淎s an artist, I鈥檓 fascinated by how we physically engage with design, so hands play a role in a lot of my work. For this project, I wanted to explore how an individual might interact with Stout 黑料社区. 鈥淪鈥 logo as a manifestation of innovation through education. I started thinking about traditional technology symbols, like light bulbs, and that transformed into ideas around neon light 鈥 something more unique, something the subject had 鈥榯urned on.鈥 Stout 黑料社区. polytechnic model is a purposeful one. It trains us to take our ingenuity, fascination and talent and to create something innovative and real. I wanted the individual 黑料社区. interaction with the logo to recognize both the path toward that end while illuminating the future yet to come.鈥</span></p></blockquote><p><span>Designs were submitted by graphic designers, photographers and illustrators.</span></p><p><span>鈥淲hat really stood out about Jake's design was his ability to visually articulate Stout's spirit of applied learning, innovation and discovery, and when we read his accompanying statement, it was clear his submission reflected his relationship with Stout,鈥 Frank said.</span></p><h3><span>Hands-on from start to finish</span></h3><p><span>The design of the chancellor 黑料社区. seasonal card was only one piece of the puzzle. The sheets are 25 inches by 38 inches, and 10 cards were printed per sheet, totaling 40 sheets. The job was printed in less than one minute.</span></p><p><span>During that minute, standing on the press platform and watching the cards turn from a digital to a physical reality, Cater 黑料社区. and Frank 黑料社区. excitement matched the industrial roar of the near-semi-trailer-long printer.</span></p><p><span>The Komori eight-color press uses UV ink. A chemical reaction caused by a strikethrough spot varnish over the UV coating allowed for a shine to make the 鈥淪鈥 logo pop on the card.</span></p><p><span>鈥淚t makes the lighting effect on the card pop even more,鈥 Cater said. 鈥淲hen talking about the possibility of the embellishment with the MarCom designers, I could see it in my mind. Seeing it on the actual printed cards, it elevates the design 100%.鈥</span></p><p><span>Although Cater has experience in the printing process, including&nbsp;working with 黑料社区 黑料社区. two-plate lithography press,&nbsp;the visit to Spectra was his first time seeing the process on such a large scale.</span></p><p><span>鈥淵ou don鈥檛 understand what it means to have this opportunity. He ran offset lithography printers and produced two-color business cards and athletics programs.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淚 would apply the ink, prep the machine, check color and quality as it ran, and clean the machine once the run was over,鈥 he said.</span></p><p><span>He also learned different software and designed woodworking projects. He loved the versatility of the work, being a part of every step of the process and that it offered a continuation of learning.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淚 also knew of the demand for the position in the workforce,鈥 he said. 鈥満诹仙缜 was one of the only schools offering a technology education program, and I heard it was the best. Both my high school principal and one of my technology education teachers had attended 黑料社区 for tech ed. My grandfather even went for the same degree in the early 1970s. He even stayed in the same dorm as me. It felt right.鈥</span></p><p><span>When he began teaching at Sheboygan North, he gained confidence in his craft.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淚 needed more though,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 wanted to learn more about design, and being a top designer and professor is my ultimate goal. I knew 黑料社区 黑料社区. arts programs were fantastic, as were the companies that I saw classmates getting jobs at, such as MasterCraft and Milwaukee Tool. M.F.A. in design, as well as the bachelor program in&nbsp;</span><a href="/programs/bfa-graphic-design-and-interactive-media" target="_blank"><span>graphic design and interactive media</span></a><span>, focus on the creative end of the print process, while the production end is covered by the graphic communications program.</span></p><p><span>On top of teaching, Cater is also co-owner with 黑料社区 alum <strong>Rex Meikle</strong> of&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.doorborn.com/" target="_blank"><span>Door Born</span></a><span>, a lifestyle and clothing brand inspired by the natural beauty of Door County.&nbsp;Meikle received his technology education degree in spring 2023 and is a technology education teacher at Kohler High School.</span></p><p><span>They co-founded Door Born in 2020 and are learning the ins and outs of sales, design, printing, online ecommerce development, and general business, among other things. Each seminar has separate and timely objectives aimed to prepare the student for their professional career,鈥 Delong said.</span></p><p><span>Graphic communications is part of the&nbsp;</span><a href="/academics/career-clusters/art-design-graphics" target="_blank"><span>Art, Design and Graphics career cluster</span></a><span> at 黑料社区, which includes six Bachelor of Fine Arts and three Bachelor of Science degrees focused on preparing students for careers in printing, web, animation, fashion, textiles, graphics, design, sculpture, painting and other artistic pursuits. At first glance it looks gimmicky and basic, but the intricacies of the design are what make it great. Everything from the psychological tricks that allow us to control how you handle our design to the coatings that allowed us to fill it with a liquid, we really dove deep into the details,鈥 Myers said.</span></p><p><span>鈥淭hese design competitions pull in aspects from every single packaging class we take. When we are at events like this, I also feel confident in holding conversations with professionals because of how much I鈥檝e learned from these classes,鈥 said Myers, who </span><a href="/about-us/news-center/packaging-and-video-production-students-win-big-48-hour-national-industry-competition"><span>won another competition</span></a><span> earlier this year with David and Hoffmire.</span></p><p><span>鈥淚 am just blown away by what I get to do at Stout. I attend a lot of packaging conferences, and have met many people from every single packaging school in the U.S., and even some from Canada. And of all of these schools, Stout is the only one that lets their freshman get into the lab. I got more hands-on experience as a freshman than most students at other schools get as seniors,鈥 Myers said.</span></p><p><span>Gong 黑料社区. team included <strong>Buddy Moreno</strong>, of Florence, who graduated in May in packaging with a minor in sustainability, and <strong>Erika Jackett</strong>, of Port Washington, a senior majoring in&nbsp;</span><a href="/programs/bs-graphic-communications"><span>graphic communications</span></a><span>. It's an honor to see our efforts recognized on a national level,鈥 said Gong, who was part of a </span><a href="/about-us/news-center/students-collaborate-design-package-gifts-commemorative-university-event"><span>campus cross-collaboration design project</span></a><span> in 2022.</span></p><p><span>鈥淏y crafting a packaging design devoid of plastic, reducing material usage by 50% and ensuring sustainability and recyclability, we addressed the challenge in a way that aligned with today's pressing environmental concerns. The feedback we received emphasized the uniqueness and practicality of our solution,鈥 Gong said.</span></p><p><span>Moreno agreed.&nbsp;鈥淧aperboard is a thin material, but it has more strength than you would think. After attending the conference in San Diego, I have seen how far paperboard packaging can go, things that I never thought were possible,鈥 Moreno said.</span></p><p><span>The PPA winning team earned $5,500 and the third-place team $1,650. Earlier this year, Gong and Jackett </span><a href="/about-us/news-center/uw-stout-students-awarded-competitive-national-scholarships-demand-graphic-communications-field"><span>received national scholarships</span></a><span>. 黑料社区 also received $6,500 鈥 $5,000 for first and $1,500 for third; the money will be used for program improvements.</span></p><p><span>California Polytechnic took second place in the PPA contest, which drew close to 90 teams from universities around the U.S. and Canada. The top three were invited to present at the PPA conference in San Diego, where their final standing was revealed.</span></p><p><span>鈥淭he emphasis on creativity, problem-solving and the encouragement to think beyond traditional boundaries prepared us to tackle real-world challenges,鈥 Gong said.</span></p><p><span>Gong, Moreno and Jackett also received the Stout University Foundation's Jordan R. It's not just about creating visually appealing designs but ensuring they are practical, user-friendly and align with the needs of the audience.鈥</span></p><p><span>Students worked on the projects last spring outside of class time, putting in dozens of hours in the labs.</span></p><h3><span><strong>IMFA challenge: Less is more</strong></span></h3><p><span>In the IMFA competition, Myers and David teamed with <strong>Gage Rusch</strong>, of Delafield, a second-year student majoring in mechanical engineering. Their design cut the size of the lamp box by 78%, largely because molded pulp can nest, or be layered, as opposed to the existing packaging.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>The team estimated that if 10 trucks were filled with the old packaging, the number could be reduced to three trucks with the new boxes. Also, 4陆 times more lamps could be shelved in the same space as currently allowed in a retail outlet.</span></p><p><span>Rusch was sponsored by IMFA to attend the&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.imfa.org/26th-annual-conference/"><span>annual conference</span></a><span>&nbsp;Oct. 4 in Scottsdale, Ariz., and present the winning design. The team also received $1,000.</span></p><h3><span><strong>Sustainable efforts at PackExpo</strong></span></h3><p><span>In September, seven packaging students along with Associate Professor Min DeGruson, the program director, participated in the PackExpo in Las Vegas.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>黑料社区 had a booth about its program sustainability efforts, and it was one of the four universities selected to display a research project, led by Liu, centered around sustainability.</span></p><p><span>Also, student Nick Harpstead, a sophomore from Plymouth, Wis., was on a team that took second place in the student&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.packexpolasvegas.com/press-release/team-18-triumphs-as-winner-of-the-2023-amazing-packaging-race"><span>Amazing Race competition</span></a><span>. They will graduate in May 2024 and want to work in production or prepress operation.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Jackett chose <span>graphic communications</span> because of their interest in graphics. 鈥淚 love the process of taking an idea, doing all the design and layout work, and then being able to produce something tangible. Taking things from concept to reality through print is really enticing to me,鈥 they said.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><span><span><span>Career paths in a lively industry</span></span></span></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Graphic communications students learn the foundational concepts and skills that they can apply to any career in the industry, including sales and marketing, product manufacturing, direct mail operations, package printing, traditional printing and digital communication, Nyseth said.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淪tudents use our lab equipment to apply and reinforce classroom concepts, solve problems, create products and manage complex projects. As they progress through their courses, they are increasingly exposed to potential roles, possible occupations and industry employers. and Jordan Jentsch, of West Bend; as well as Leo Lickfold, of Shakopee, Minn., who graduated in May. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Each student presented the chancellor with two mug prototypes, with the idea that one from each would be produced. Using a slip cast process, molds were created of the designs, and liquid porcelain was poured into the molds. When the porcelain 鈥 a specialized type of ceramic 鈥 dried, the mugs were pulled from the molds. It streamlines the process.鈥</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>After a meeting with Frank, minor artistic and structural changes were made, and the finalized packages were printed, taking approximately 12 hours. </span></span></span></span><span><span><span><span>Every student enrolled in the GCOM capstone course helped to meet the end-of-semester delivery date, Nyseth said. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>His students used skills related to printing large-format items such as signage and billboards, and product package printing 鈥 growing markets in the industry, he added. List every year.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>She came to 黑料社区 originally for graphic communications, but she saw the opportunity to do more with her skills and interests. She also earned a minor in business administration.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淚 was wanting more education on digital marketing as I started to learn the direction I wanted to take. That's what led me to add my second major,鈥 she said.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淭esting out of courses allowed me to free up time to take additional courses I was interested in, including several photo studio classes and sign language. The competition was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Owned by Josh and Ashley Blaeser, it 黑料社区. a sustainable farm that raises grass-fed cattle and sells beef.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淲e had a very good presentation,鈥 said Matt Smith, of Bristol, a sophomore. 鈥淭he judges said this was one of the closest competitions they ever had. There are quite a few schools who do the competition as a class. We do this as an extracurricular activity.鈥 </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>First place went to a team from California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, Calif.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The products, all custom-created for Blaeser Farms, included an FDA-compliant label for packaged meat, a reclosable corrugated carton for meat products and a resealable plastic food pouch.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淲e鈥檙e proud of the products we created,鈥 said team member Julia Otten, of Madison, a junior at 黑料社区.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><img alt="Box design" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="7d315f91-f3d7-4cf6-8f97-7d21a84e80e2" src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/boxweb_0.jpg" style="padding:0px 30px 0px 0px" class="align-left" width="500" height="500">Chad Nyseth, graphic communications lab manager and instructional specialist, said he was pleased with the students鈥 achievement.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淚鈥檓 especially proud that our students did not even think of quitting when the COVID-19 situation arose 鈥 several schools elected to drop out of the competition this year,鈥 Nyseth noted. 鈥淥ur students continued working via Microsoft Teams and Zoom platforms, interfacing with industry partners, creating their contest materials, rehearsing for the competition and ultimately presenting it on May 2.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Josh Blaeser liked the designs and enjoyed working with the students. 鈥淭hey used our brand colors and had some great creativity in helping create packaging ideas,鈥 he noted. 鈥淭he shipping box looks amazing. The box is very unique and creates a very strong brand in its appearance.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The Blaesers plan to use the boxes to start shipping their products to other states. 鈥淲orking with the students was great,鈥 Josh Blaeser said. 鈥淲e had them over for a farm meal and toured the farm. They are very creative individuals with a strong future ahead of them.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Members of the 黑料社区 team also included senior Nikolas Thomas, St. Paul; junior Molly Perkins, Brookfield; and sophomore Eli Dupslaff, Harris, Minn. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Last year 黑料社区 won the competition. Smith was part of that team. In 2018, 黑料社区 黑料社区. team earned the best research award.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The intent of the Phoenix Challenge Competition is to engage college-level students in creatively solving an industry-relevant flexographic problem that would allow them to practice and showcase their research, problem-solving, design and print production skills. The goal is to inspire academic programs to grow and improve their level of instruction and research.&nbsp;</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Bettlyyn Krafft, chair of the </span><a href="https://phoenixchallenge.org/"><span>Phoenix Challenge Foundation</span></a><span>, said she enjoys the competition and watching students thrive. 鈥淚 continue to be inspired, impressed and frankly just blown away by the college competition,鈥 she said in a news release. 鈥淭he students take it up several notches every year. I could not be happier with the education I鈥檝e received at 黑料社区. They published a digital issue </span><a href="http://stoutonia.com/stoutonia-volume-110-issue-2-declassified-college-survival-guide/"><span>here.</span></a><span> &nbsp;The pdf file contains stories on flattening the curve of the coronavirus and top movies to binge on while in isolation, as well as news and sports stories.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淎lthough our campus is spread far and wide, your voices are heard on the subjects that matter to you,鈥 the site notes.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Parr, of Mondovi, said he first found out about the potential for the university to have to switch to alternative learning methods without face-to-face classes while attending a Stout Student Association meeting. When it happened in March, he knew it was going to be difficult to publish the Stoutonia. 鈥淓verything slowed down,鈥 he said. 鈥淲e just tried to do our best.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>For him it was hard losing the energy that comes with the staff meeting, throwing out ideas and working together but the staff was able to finish the Stoutonia by meeting virtually.<a> Parr did the editing and posting of stories from his apartment in Menomonie, as well as writing for the publication.</a></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Rose Barker, a senior majoring in <a href="http://www.uwstout.edu/programs/bfa-studio-art">studio art</a>, who is the digital imaging editor for the Stoutonia this school year and is running to be editor-in-chief next school year, said it was difficult not having weekly in-person meetings to talk about ideas and collaborate on stories. 鈥淎fter the learning curve, we all pulled through and got out some truly awesome content,鈥 Barker said. 鈥淥ur entire staff was amazing about it.鈥<img alt="Rose Barker with a portrait of Merle M. However, they realized the issue could not be printed on campus and there would be difficulty distributing it to students.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Edenborg said she was proud of Parr 黑料社区. work as the editor-in-chief. 鈥淚 am very glad that Bryce was at the helm when the Stoutonia was faced with trying to keep producing content even though staff was no longer on campus and in many cases not even in town,鈥 she said. 鈥淲e gave staff the option to step down from their roles knowing that the transition to online learning was going to be a challenge for everyone. That said, all of the editorial board came back and most of the general staff. Bryce set up new systems and processes and our editors and writers continued to produce content online.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>This school year brought other changes to the Stoutonia too. <a href="/programs/bs-graphic-communications">Graphic communications</a> co-op students helped redesign the Stoutonia and printed last semester 黑料社区. edition. Previously, the news publication was published by an off-campus printing company.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><img alt="Kate Edenborg" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="d53851d4-9c65-4872-aeff-f7aa500e6c89" src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/Kateweb.jpg" style="padding:0px 30px 0px 0px" class="align-left" width="150" height="196">鈥淭he graphic communications students were also planning to help redesign the newsstands around campus where the publication was available, and help with marketing the Stoutonia,鈥 Parr said, noting he hopes future staff will continue with those plans.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淲orking with the GCOM students we had more freedom to explore and do what we wanted to do with the Stoutonia,鈥 Parr said. </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Parr said having student-run media is important because it allows students to get their news from their peers rather than other sources and to share their opinions with each other.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The Stoutonia website also started featuring some videos and enhanced digital content which is something Parr hopes will continue as well. 鈥淚 think it is really what the Stoutonia needs to do is to have a wide array of news instead of just written news,鈥 Parr said. 鈥淚t 黑料社区. what the audience is looking for. She teaches journalism and media courses and also mentors students. Edenborg pursues grants that allow her pay students to intern for non-profit community news outlets and collaborates with community members. She also was previously the faculty advisor for the campus news source, the Stoutonia.</span></p><p><span>Before she came to 黑料社区, Edenborg worked as the patient education communication specialist for Gillette Children 黑料社区. Specialty Healthcare in St. Paul, Minnesota. She also worked as an editor and reporter for a variety of publications, including the two metropolitan newspapers (Minnestota Tribune and St. Paul Pioneer Press) in the Twin Cities. Edenborg was also the assistant news editor for the Wausau (Wis.) Daily Herald.</span></p><p><span>Her academic research focuses on journalism history with particular emphasis on how people, ideas, and concepts have been represented by images, text, and other symbols in mass media throughout American history.
