The high school students also are given a campus tour and participate in a student panel of early childhood education (ECE) majors.</span></p><p><span>“By engaging in authentic, hands-on experiences and connecting with current education students and faculty, participants gain a better understanding of the impact and importance of the teaching profession. Events like this play an important role in strengthening the pipeline of future educators while also reinforcing the passion and commitment of those already preparing to enter the field,” said <strong>Assistant Professor Jody Shong</strong>, who will lead early childhood education and early childhood special education activities during Teach Day.</span></p><p><span>Participants will share in interactive, hands-on activities designed to give them a glimpse into what teaching young children looks like in practice. The activities are intentionally experiential, allowing students to step into the role of a teacher while exploring how young children learn, communicate and develop, Shong said.</span></p><p><span>Through a series of engaging challenges, students will experience the importance of clear instruction, problem-solving and inclusive teaching practices. They will explore how ECE teachers use their understanding of child development to design learning environments and support the needs of all learners.</span></p><p><span>“The session will conclude with a short demonstration highlighting how early relationships and learning experiences shape brain development during the critical birth-to-five years. This helps students see how early childhood educators play a powerful role in supporting children . development during one of the most important periods of life,” Shong said.</span></p><h3><span>Early Childhood Education Conference</span></h3><p><span>Through presentations and workshops guided by national early childhood professionals, educators at the ECE Conference will explore the powerful connection between their well-being and children . holistic development through research-based strategies, collaborative sessions&nbsp;and innovative approaches. They will focus on mental health and well-being strategies for educators.</span></p><p><span>Bates-Maves’ keynote, “Stress and Burnout: Considerations for Teachers,” will focus on why understanding the impact of and the response to educator burnout is important. Her talk will explore the state of burnout, its progression and recommend responses to support the body in a stressed state. Information will be useful for teachers as much as for the students they teach.</span></p><p><span>Dr. OH . keynote, “Finding J.O.Y. Everyday: Nurturing Mental Health and Equity in Early Childhood Education,” will give educators insight into how prioritizing their own mental health is foundational to supporting students’ well-being and cultivating positive, inclusive climates. Her keynote unpacks the J.O.Y. framework (Judging Thoughts, Observing Feelings, Yielding to Positive Actions). Reflective exercises and a hands-on STEM activity will bring the framework to life and provide concrete examples for educators to apply in their own practice.</span></p><h3><span>Helping lead events for current and future teachers</span></h3><p><span>For students, helping lead Teach Day and the ECE Conference provides valuable opportunities to practice communication, leadership and instructional skills while reflecting on their own development as future educators.</span></p><p><span><strong>Alyssa Bratsch</strong>, an&nbsp;early childhood education junior from Minneapolis, will volunteer at the ECE Conference and volunteered last year as well. She plans to be a special education toddler teacher and appreciates that special education courses are built into the ECE program, so she can gain the skills to best support all young learners.</span></p><p><span>“During toddlerhood, a child . brain is developing rapidly, making it a crucial period for learning basic life and social skills,” she said. “Early intervention is vital in helping children with disabilities or developmental delays. It provides support and teaching during the years when children are learning, growing and absorbing the most. We wouldn't be able to do any of it without her support,” said <strong>Abbi Williams</strong>, Tau Chapter president. “Lindsay encourages us to be our best selves by taking on leadership roles. Lindsay does so much for Tau chapter and Phi U, as a whole.”</span></p><p><span>“Having my members nominate me was unexpected and an honor,” Barnhart said. “It is a joy to be a part of this organization and lead these stellar students to do the work they do. Lindsay Barnhart has served as adviser since 2020.</span></p><h3><span>Student activities and awards</span></h3><p><span>Conclave attendees joined in a community service project to pack 50 birthday bags to donate to&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.steppingstonesdc.org/" target="_blank"><span>Stepping Stones of Dunn County</span></a><span>, a nonprofit food pantry and homeless shelter. Our organization really prioritizes giving back and completing service projects, and to be recognized for our hard work is very much appreciated,” Williams said. “It is a total team effort when it comes to these projects. We have 12 members in our chapter, which is low compared to other chapters. But I think why we are so successful when it comes to service is that we all work together, and we all pitch in.”</span></p><p><span>Last year, Tau members completed nine service projects, including gathering donations for Sleep in Heavenly Peace and the Menomonie Public Library. They made appreciation bags for support staff at River Heights Elementary and Wakanda Elementary and participated in Teach Day, a biannual event that invites high school students to explore education majors.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>They sent seasonal cards to elderly community members, and volunteered at elementary school events, Sunday school programs and the Special Olympics basketball tournament. We are very lucky to have received monetary&nbsp;donations to complete service projects. As a family, it is our responsibility and honor to give back to others who may be less fortunate. Howe Scholarship, who received $6,050 each.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>“Teaching was always my plan, and even when I thought about doing something else, I always came back to teaching. Teaching brings me so much joy. I feel like there is no better investment than investing in future leaders. Wood was a longtime assistant chancellor for Student Services/Dean of Students. He retired in 1991 and died in February 2013.</span></p><p><span>Charest and Timm are honored to receive the Wood Medallion, they said.</span></p><p><span>“It is a true honor to be associated with Samuel . name. He was a pioneer here at Stout, and I am very proud of receiving his leadership award,” Charest said. “Even though all my actions came from the bottom of my heart, it is touching to know that my contribution, as well as that of other students, is being underlined and rewarded. It sets a great example for the next generation of students.”</span></p><p><span>Timm received the award along with two of her classmates and rugby teammates and feels privileged to join the prestigious group of campus leaders.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>“This award is not just a reflection of my efforts, but a testament to the communities built here on campus,” she said. “The amount of support and inspiration from all the individuals I have had the privilege to work with make it so easy to dedicate my time and service. To know I am joining this amazing group of leaders is so motivating to continue to strive for excellence in leadership.”</span></p><h3><span>An outstanding researcher and scholar athlete</span></h3><p><span>Charest was a student premedicine adviser through the Pre-Health Society, advising and mentoring younger students seeking medical school. He also assisted in the French class at Menomonie High School, as French is his first language.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Charest played forward on the Blue Devil men . ice hockey team. He was one of 48 seniors recognized as a&nbsp;</span><a href="https://stoutbluedevils.com/news/2024/4/2/general-blue-devil-scholar-athletes-honored.aspx"><span> Scholar Athlete</span></a><span>, an award given to senior student athletes with a 3.5 grade point average or higher.</span></p><p><span>“Many people believed in me and paved the way for me to succeed, so being able to have these opportunities meant the world to me. They allowed me to fulfill my desire to leave a positive and long-lasting impact on my fellow students, my professors, and the Menomonie community,” he said.</span></p><p><span>Charest graduated on May 4 and is returning to Quebec. He will attend medical school starting in September.</span></p><h3><span>Advocating for teacher excellence and the polytechnic advantage</span></h3><p><span>Timm served as president of the Stout Association of Family and Consumer Sciences,&nbsp;was a&nbsp;Student Unit officer for the Wisconsin Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and was named a student representative for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction . I have been fortunate to have had many professional development opportunities that have given me a strong network and perspective on my role in education, and I look forward to growing more,” Timm said. “I take pride in advocating for teacher excellence and finding ways to reward our teachers, who are making a difference in their students’ and co-workers’ lives and communities.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>“As a tour guide, I love meeting prospective students and giving them a brief view of life as a Blue Devil,” she added. “I love showing families why I love Stout and how&nbsp;</span><a href="/about-us/our-polytechnic-advantage" target="_blank"><span>our polytechnic advantage</span></a><span> can benefit their education. Being a small part of their decision to be a Blue Devil is just so exciting.”</span></p><p><span>Timm will student teach culinary at Hudson High School this fall and graduate in December. Of the 116 licensed group child care centers in the 10-county area, 70% responded to the survey.</span></p><p><span>They reported having to adjust their capacity because of a shortage of qualified staff. And although the group centers reported hiring almost 600 times in the last 12 months, there are still more than 300 staff positions open. In addition to adjusted capacity, more than 50 classrooms closed, resulting in a loss of more than 1,600 child care slots.</span></p><p><span>In these counties, waiting lists for families outweigh availability, with 90% of programs reporting a waiting list of more than 4,000 children. And across the state, three or more children compete for every available child care spot, with 54% of Wisconsin residents living in child care deserts.</span></p><p><span>Without support around the child care staffing crisis, 16% of CCP group child care programs reported they were facing closure due to the ongoing issue of not having qualified staff.</span></p><p><span>As part of Gov. Evers proposed 2023-25 budget, $340 million would be invested in the Child Care Counts: COVID-19 Stabilization Payment Program, along with $22 million to support the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families’ Partner Up! Program.</span></p><p><span>Without ongoing financial support through programs like Child Care Counts and Partner Up!, 44% of CCP programs were unsure they would remain in business, and 21% felt they would close in the near future.</span></p><p><span>Child Care Partnership, a Western Dairyland Community Action Agency program, serves Buffalo, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, St. Croix, and Trempealeau counties and the Ho-Chunk Nation. Its goal is to increase access to consistent, affordable and quality child care services.</span></p><h3><span>University center helping to make a difference</span></h3><p><span>The Child and Family Study Center practices the university . </span><a href="/about-us/our-polytechnic-advantage" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span>polytechnic mission</span></a><span> of providing hands-on experiences to undergraduate and master . students to prepare them for careers in child care and early childhood education. Instructional staff teach in five classrooms and labs in two locations on campus: the Infant/Toddler Lab in Heritage Hall, with children 6 weeks through 3 years of age; and the Preschool, with children 3 to 6 years, including the 4K program, in partnership with the School District of the Menomonie Area.</span></p><p><span>As a National Association for the Education of Young Children accredited program, the CFSC is held to guidelines regarding teacher preparation.&nbsp;It holds a five-star rating in the YoungStar system, which ensures the health and safety of child care in Wisconsin.</span></p><p><span>“We have a reputation of quality and intentional programming to support children's success,” said <strong>Director Allison Feller</strong>.&nbsp;“Our qualified staff&nbsp;exemplify excellence and directly impact our program's success. By staying abreast of current research and developments in the field of early childhood education, they mentor future educators who are prepared to enter the workforce.”</span></p><p><span>This year, 63 children of university students, faculty, staff and community members are in CFSC programming. She works one-on-one with children ages 2 and older, who are on the autism spectrum. Using applied behavior analysis, Hewitt guides children to understand their abilities to their best advantage, so that they may have the most independent life they can.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>“My education from Stout has given me the best tools to excel in my position,” Hewitt said. “I use individualization and differentiation every single day. I also utilize the training I received at Stout to create plans for programming, thinking outside the box for creatively presenting new learning objectives while aiming for the most multimodal experience for the child. The skills I learned to help manage classrooms and learning environments, as well as building family relationships and rapport, has helped me to be the best behavior therapist I can be.”</span></p><p><span>The Preschool building opened in 1971; the Heritage Hall Infant/Toddler Lab opened in 1973.</span></p><p><span>The </span><a href="/about-us/meet-our-leadership/business-finance-and-administrative-services/facilities-management/heritage-hall-renovation-project" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span>Heritage Hall renovation</span></a><span> will support building a new CFSC, strengthening state-of-the-art programming and curriculum to keep students at the forefront of innovative and evidence-based early childhood services. A newly designed center will also include a common space for faculty, staff, community partners and families to expand existing collaborations and campus initiatives.</span></p><p><span>The renovation of Heritage Hall, which&nbsp;</span><a href="/about-us/news-center/major-renovation-heritage-hall-ranked-no-1-chippewa-valley-third-uw-system-academic-buildings" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span>received priority approval</span></a><span> from the UW System Board of Regents, is ranked No. 1 in the Chippewa Valley and No. 3 for major academic building renovation projects. They assess 3K students for their clinical practicums to profile preacademic skills at the beginning and end of each academic year.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>This collaboration benefits multiple stakeholders, Peterson explained, including the graduate students who receive applied learning experience; and CFSC instructional staff and parents who receive meaningful information about instruction and a benchmark measure of progress. As emerging professional counselors, our students will educate parents and caregivers on how to support children in the midst of normal development, but also those experiencing developmental crises,” Bates-Maves said.</span></p><p><span>This spring semester, <strong>Assistant Professor Lindsay Heidelberger</strong>, program director of M.S. nutrition and dietetics, has connected <strong>Professor Deb Sheats</strong> to collaborate with CFSC staff to provide master's students in the Nutrition Education and Counseling course with hands-on, polytechnic learning. Students will observe meal times at the CFSC, conduct needs assessments with staff and create nutrition education video lessons for children and their families.</span></p><p><span>“Having access to the CFSC has been integral to the students’ learning by providing experiential learning in a real-world setting as a nutrition educator,” Heidelberger said.</span></p></div> </div> </div> </section> Students in the School of Education's B.S. Early Childhood Education program provide childcare for children ages 0-3. The value of graduates from 's education programs has never been greater for Wisconsin schools.</p> <p><span><span><span><span>University students led much of Teach Day, with support from program directors. I wouldn’t have explored it if it weren’t for my teacher Mr. Peterson. I want to help other students explore and excel in technology,” Whited said.</span></p><p><span>High school students learned how to write a lesson plan, which they could take back to their schools and use to teach a class. They also toured campus and met with university students during lunch to talk more about their programs of interest.</span></p><h3><span>Event responds to growing need for teachers</span></h3><p><span>Last year . </span><a href="/about-us/news-center/teach-day-encourages-high-school-students-explore-teaching-career" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span>pilot program</span></a><span> focused on family and consumer sciences education; marketing and business education; and technology education. FCCLA and her family and consumer sciences teacher helped her learn that she loves to teach.</span></p><p><span>“I love this event because I get to share my passion for teaching, and I get to teach other people about my major and . This event gives people the opportunity to explore teaching in an interactive way,” Korte said.</span></p><p><span>Technology education majors <strong>Sam Konieczny</strong> and <strong>Ben Schmitt</strong> also volunteer during Teach Day. Their high school technology education teachers were influential in their decisions to teach.</span></p><p><span>Schmitt assisted his teacher in high school, working with his classmates and stepping up into a leadership role. “I hope my involvement with Teach Day gives high school students that opportunity to experience teaching for a day and gain clarity about a path to teaching through ,” he said.</span></p><p><span>“Teach Day gives high school students who are looking at a career in education a chance to see the other side of the desk and what Stout has to offer them,” Konieczny added.</span></p><p><span>Konieczny believes education is one of the most rewarding careers. “It is the best thing to be working with someone and watch what they weren’t understanding click and make sense. She plans to teach in central Wisconsin. Konieczny and Schmitt plan to student teach in fall 2023 and graduate that semester. Schmitt, of Somerset, would like to teach in western Wisconsin.</span></p><p><span>Konieczny, from Oak Creek, a Milwaukee suburb, would like to “go back to the Milwaukee area and give back to the community that helped me get to where I am today,” he said. “When I look back at some of the people who made the biggest difference in my life, it was my teachers. I never had any doubt,” Herwig said. “My vision for my future to lead a wonderful life was to study at Stout, earn a degree and teach in Wisconsin. She named two major factors that changed her career path. First, in the fall of her junior year in 1963, she was selected as a representative to attend Merrill-Palmer Institute in Detroit. </span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>Her courses centered around the institute . mission to promote and improve the development and well-being of children and their families. She witnessed the creation of Head Start, her instructors having a key role in the development of the national standards for the program.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>“At that time, Stout did not offer an early childhood education degree,” Herwig said. “My experience at Merrill-Palmer forever changed my content area from broad home economics to child development.”</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>The second factor that changed Herwig . career path was a </span></span></span><a href="https://www.nea.org/" rel="noopener" target="_blank"><span><span>Student National Education Association</span></span></a><span><span><span> meeting concerning academic careers as university and college faculty. “I remember a feeling of ‘ah-ha.’ Whoever thought about that – of higher education as a career path? Now in her late 70s, looking back at her career, Herwig wants to support students seeking a similar path. </span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>Through the Stout University Foundation, she has established the Dr. Joan Herwig Early Childhood Education Endowed Scholarship, </span></span></span><span><span><span>designed for first-generation </span></span></span><a href="/programs/bs-early-childhood-education" rel="noopener" target="_blank"><span><span>early childhood education</span></span></a><span><span><span> juniors.</span></span></span><span><span><span> </span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>Herwig . gift of $50,000 will award a $1,750 scholarship annually</span></span></span><span><span><span>, starting in the 2022-23 academic year.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><span><span>Leading to higher education</span></span></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span><span><span>The first four years after she graduated, Herwig taught home economics and English to seventh- and eighth-graders in Port Huron, Mich. In the summers, she taught and led the district . Head Start program, seeing firsthand how the program envisioned at Merrill-Palmer benefited young students and their families.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>Herwig remembered a 5-year-old Head Start student named Kathy, who often forgot to wear her glasses and came to school hungry. On a home visit, Herwig talked with Kathy . </span></span></span><span><span>older sister, an&nbsp;eighth-grade</span></span><span><span><span> home economics student of hers during the regular school year. I worked with their older brothers and sisters too. I made connections with their families,” she said.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>From Port Huron, Herwig moved on to earn her master . from Iowa State and her Ph.D. from Purdue, both in child development, and taught child development at Iowa State from 1971 until her retirement in 2003 </span></span></span><span><span>as professor emeritus.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>In that time, she had opportunities to travel the world as an educator, researcher and early childhood advocate. She was a Fulbright Scholar in 1991 and 1992, working with faculty across India in early childhood education and development. Soon after, she was invited to attend an international symposium in Zurich, Switzerland, which led to an unexpected encounter.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>After the symposium, she traveled with a friend through the Alps and stayed in a Swiss hotel. One day, </span></span></span><span><span>they wandered into a&nbsp;meeting room, where small Rotary International banners were displayed.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>“</span></span></span><span><span>It so happened that&nbsp;the first banner she saw&nbsp;was from Menomonie, Wisconsin,</span></span><span><span><span>” she said. “I could hardly believe it. And she encourages graduates to share their best practices beyond their place of work – to see the possibilities in administrative roles, serving as advocates in professional organizations and creating new legislation to promote the importance of childhood, funding and curriculums offered.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>“I hope they see themselves as change-agents in the broader world around them, wherever they are. I hope they dream big and dare to adventure. There . a big world out there,” Herwig said. “The potential is there. Invite the people around you to keep learning. They may want to be adventurers too. But when her parents and teachers told her she would be a great teacher, she started to think about a career in education.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>In high school, she volunteered at a preschool and found her love for early childhood education. &nbsp;</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>“When I was little, I always played ‘school’ with my siblings and cousins, where I played the teacher,” said North, of Greenwood. “I realized hospital environments were not for me. The idea of teaching became more concrete after I pieced together my interests, experiences and past.”</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>With a tentative goal of teaching kindergarten or first grade, North . hands-on experiences in . ECE program help her apply what she learns in class. Her placement in community classrooms range from birth to third grade. “We undergo practical experiences where we teach lessons, manage a classroom and assess the children,” she said.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>North, a senior this fall, has served as Phi U . initiation chair and will be vice president this year. But she didn’t know what kind of teacher she wanted to be. She liked to cook and bake, watching her mom and grandmothers in the kitchen.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Then, her family and consumer sciences class in middle school sparked her interests. Her high school courses and extracurricular activities working with younger students confirmed her decision to be an FCS educator.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Weber, a senior this fall, will begin her student teaching next spring. She feels that . FCSE program is well-rounded and she . prepared to have her own classroom. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>“My knowledge and passion toward family and consumer sciences has grown immensely, and I look forward to teaching and inspiring my future students to appreciate what FCS has to offer,” said Weber, of Dorchester.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>“The hands-on way of teaching lets me put into practice my knowledge,” she added.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Weber, who has a minor in <a href="/programs/human-development-and-family-studies-minor" target="_blank">human development and family studies</a>, served as vice president of Phi U and will be president this academic year. And child care and development are a large part of her life as there are many children in her family, including three nieces. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Whenever someone asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, her answer every time was “a teacher.” But she didn’t realize until her junior year in high school how much she loved family and consumer science.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>“I remember sitting in my Child Development class, taught by one of my role models, and it just clicked. Being a family and consumer science educator is my dream career,” said Setzer, of North Branch, Minn.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Her high school teacher encouraged her to consider . FCSE program. “The program allows you so many opportunities to work with students before going out and teaching them on your own,” she said. “It is very informational, and I have received so much knowledge that I can apply to my future career. It has helped me grow into the person I am today.”</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Setzer, who has a minor in human development and family studies, will serve as president of the </span></span><span><span><span>Stout Association of Family and Consumer Sciences this year. She is the treasurer of Phi U.</span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>“In Phi U, you get to meet so many people,” she said. “We get to work with the community and the environment. I have learned even more about FCSE since joining Phi U.”</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>North, Weber and Setzer encourage FCSE and related majors to join Phi U and apply for scholarships if eligible. Their scholarships will help provide financial security as they work to finish their degrees and will be acknowledged in the fall issue of the <a href="https://phiu.org/the-candle/" target="_blank">Candle</a>, Phi U . official journal.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span> .&nbsp;<a href="/academics/colleges-schools/school-education" target="_blank">School of Education</a>&nbsp;has prepared&nbsp;teachers and educators since 1891.
