School of Education events help prepare future teachers, support educators’ well-beinggoersab March 17, 2026

�� . Teach Day for high schoolers on April 21; Early Childhood Education Conference is April 24-25

With a focus on strengthening the number of teachers in the state, as well as supporting their well-being and work in the classroom, �� . School of Education is hosting two events this spring for both future and current educators.

Teach Day, on Tuesday, April 21, helps high school students envision themselves as future teachers with hands-on activities led by faculty and university students in peer-to-peer learning environments.

The annual Early Childhood Education Conference is on Friday, April 24, and Saturday, April 25. This year ��. theme is “Whole-Child, Whole Educator: Building Emotional Wellness in Every Classroom.” Registration is open for current educators and child development professionals.

“There has never been a more crucial time to introduce high school students to the profession of education,” said School of Education Director Shannon Donnelly. “The more we can help to shape the narrative around the positives of being an educator, the more it helps to recruit people to the profession and also to keep them there.”

Teach Day

For Teach Day, high school students choose to focus on one of the School of Education ��. undergraduate programs: art education, early childhood education, family and consumer sciences education, marketing and business education, math education, social studies education, special education and technology education.

Program directors and university student volunteers will lead the young students in two activities in their focus areas: the Teach Back Challenge and Future Classroom Design. These activities give students hands-on experiences in teaching a lesson and designing their dream school of the future through an innovative lens. The high school students also are given a campus tour and participate in a student panel of early childhood education (ECE) majors.

“By engaging in authentic, hands-on experiences and connecting with current education students and faculty, participants gain a better understanding of the impact and importance of the teaching profession. Events like this play an important role in strengthening the pipeline of future educators while also reinforcing the passion and commitment of those already preparing to enter the field,” said Assistant Professor Jody Shong, who will lead early childhood education and early childhood special education activities during Teach Day.

Participants will share in interactive, hands-on activities designed to give them a glimpse into what teaching young children looks like in practice. The activities are intentionally experiential, allowing students to step into the role of a teacher while exploring how young children learn, communicate and develop, Shong said.

Through a series of engaging challenges, students will experience the importance of clear instruction, problem-solving and inclusive teaching practices. They will explore how ECE teachers use their understanding of child development to design learning environments and support the needs of all learners.

“The session will conclude with a short demonstration highlighting how early relationships and learning experiences shape brain development during the critical birth-to-five years. This helps students see how early childhood educators play a powerful role in supporting children ��. development during one of the most important periods of life,” Shong said.

Early Childhood Education Conference

Through presentations and workshops guided by national early childhood professionals, educators at the ECE Conference will explore the powerful connection between their well-being and children ��. holistic development through research-based strategies, collaborative sessions and innovative approaches. They’ll learn to create inclusive, emotionally supportive learning environments to help every child and every educator thrive.

Keynote speakers will be Dr. Julie Bates-Maves, a licensed professional counselor and professor of clinical mental health counseling at ��, and Dr. Orinthia Harris (Dr. OH), founder and executive director of STEMearly LLC. They will focus on mental health and well-being strategies for educators.

Bates-Maves’ keynote, “Stress and Burnout: Considerations for Teachers,” will focus on why understanding the impact of and the response to educator burnout is important. Her talk will explore the state of burnout, its progression and recommend responses to support the body in a stressed state. Information will be useful for teachers as much as for the students they teach.

Dr. OH ��. keynote, “Finding J.O.Y. Everyday: Nurturing Mental Health and Equity in Early Childhood Education,” will give educators insight into how prioritizing their own mental health is foundational to supporting students’ well-being and cultivating positive, inclusive climates. Her keynote unpacks the J.O.Y. framework (Judging Thoughts, Observing Feelings, Yielding to Positive Actions). Reflective exercises and a hands-on STEM activity will bring the framework to life and provide concrete examples for educators to apply in their own practice.

Helping lead events for current and future teachers

For �� students, helping lead Teach Day and the ECE Conference provides valuable opportunities to practice communication, leadership and instructional skills while reflecting on their own development as future educators.

Alyssa Bratsch, an early childhood education junior from Minneapolis, will volunteer at the ECE Conference and volunteered last year as well. She sees the event as immensely beneficial to both educational professionals and �� student volunteers, who have the opportunity to connect with individuals and employers in the field.

Bratsch will graduate in fall 2027 and is also earning her Autism Spectrum Disorder Specialist Certificate. She plans to be a special education toddler teacher and appreciates that special education courses are built into the ECE program, so she can gain the skills to best support all young learners.

“During toddlerhood, a child ��. brain is developing rapidly, making it a crucial period for learning basic life and social skills,” she said. “Early intervention is vital in helping children with disabilities or developmental delays. It provides support and teaching during the years when children are learning, growing and absorbing the most. By providing early intervention to children of this age range with exceptional abilities, I will help them to build the foundation for success for the rest of their lives.”

�� . School of Education offers nine undergraduate and five graduate programs, including on-campus and online options, along with five certificates and three certifications. Graduates are 100% employed or are continuing their education within six months of graduation and have an average starting salary of $50,000, according to Career Services’ First Destination Report.

Students receive national service award for second year in a row for dedication to community projects

Representatives from 24 universities nationwide recently attended the Phi Upsilon Omicron Conclave at ��, hosted by student members of �� . Tau Chapter.

Phi Upsilon Omicron, with 99,000 members nationwide, is the National Honor Society for Family and Consumer Sciences. The organization ��. conference, held on Oct. 3-5, supports educators and students in FCS and related fields.

The three-day event included presentations and workshops led by leaders in education, a community service project and an awards ceremony, where �� . early childhood education Program Director Lindsay Barnhart was recognized for her distinguished service as a Phi Upsilon Omicron adviser.

Barnhart received the Bachtel/Holbrook Collegiate Advisor Award. She was nominated by her Tau Chapter student members.

“Lindsay is our biggest cheerleader when it comes to any service or planning we do. We wouldn't be able to do any of it without her support,” said Abbi Williams, Tau Chapter president. “Lindsay encourages us to be our best selves by taking on leadership roles. Lindsay does so much for Tau chapter and Phi U, as a whole.”

“Having my members nominate me was unexpected and an honor,” Barnhart said. “It is a joy to be a part of this organization and lead these stellar students to do the work they do. Hearing how they are impacted makes it even more rewarding."

“There are 71 active national Phi Upsilon Omicron chapters. While this award is not the highest honor the organization bestows, it is very meaningful when there are 70 other individuals that have the opportunity to receive it," she added.

Barnhart was initiated as a Tau member in 2009 while earning her Ed.S. in career and technical education. She began serving as financial adviser in 2011 and became co-adviser in 2017 with her mother-in-law, Carolyn Barnhart. Lindsay Barnhart has served as adviser since 2020.

Student activities and awards

Conclave attendees joined in a community service project to pack 50 birthday bags to donate to Stepping Stones of Dunn County, a nonprofit food pantry and homeless shelter. They tied six blankets and donated sheet sets for Sleep in Heavenly Peace, a nonprofit dedicated to building beds for children in need.

The Tau Chapter was selected by the national council to receive a top honor for its work within the community – the Region 1 National Service Project Award, for the 2023-24 academic year. It also received the award in 2022-23.

“The national project award is so special. Our organization really prioritizes giving back and completing service projects, and to be recognized for our hard work is very much appreciated,” Williams said. “It is a total team effort when it comes to these projects. We have 12 members in our chapter, which is low compared to other chapters. But I think why we are so successful when it comes to service is that we all work together, and we all pitch in.”

Last year, Tau members completed nine service projects, including gathering donations for Sleep in Heavenly Peace and the Menomonie Public Library. They made appreciation bags for support staff at River Heights Elementary and Wakanda Elementary and participated in Teach Day, a biannual �� event that invites high school students to explore education majors.

They sent seasonal cards to elderly community members, and volunteered at elementary school events, Sunday school programs and the Special Olympics basketball tournament. They made port pillows for local cancer patients and a gift basket for an alumni member who was going through cancer treatment.

Williams thinks there is a definite connection between teaching, community service and the theme of family.

“Through my experience in the teaching field, ‘family’ is something that comes up often, both in supporting our students’ families and in creating our own family in the classroom and school,” she said.

“Our chapter is privileged to make a difference in the lives of others. We are very lucky to have received monetary donations to complete service projects. As a family, it is our responsibility and honor to give back to others who may be less fortunate. Completing service projects is one of my favorite parts of Phi U because it empowers us and the individuals we can help.”

Eight �� students were awarded more than $26,000 in scholarships at the conclave:

Williams was one of three recipients of the Phyllis S. Howe Scholarship, who received $6,050 each.

“Teaching was always my plan, and even when I thought about doing something else, I always came back to teaching. Teaching brings me so much joy. I feel like there is no better investment than investing in future leaders. As a teacher, my goal is to provide a space where my students feel supported, safe and empowered to make a difference,” Williams said.

The conference also included presentations and workshops by �� faculty, staff and area educators: Associate Lecturer Ann Brand led a workshop on mindfulness; school psychology Program Director Angela Axelrod led presentations on Trauma Informed Strategies and Teaching, and ADHD and Learning Disabilities in the Classroom; AI Integration Technologist Emily Laird presented on generative AI ��. role in education, and family and consumer sciences area teacher Sue Halama led a workshop on Laughter Yoga.

Inspiring Graduate: Lauren Arenz (’24)

One of the biggest challenges Lauren Arenz faced while earning her degree at �� was trying to juggle being a student while maintaining a high grade point average and also being an athlete on a very competitive team.

As a guard on the Blue Devil women's basketball team for four years, she played in 81 games, started in 38, scored 231 points, and had 163 assists, 237 rebounds and 62 steals.

This season, the team won the WIAC championship and made the NCAA DIII championship Sweet 16, ��'s first appearance in the national tournament since 2007.

“Being a college student athlete requires dedication as well as a sense of balance in all aspects of life. I experienced valuable lessons in teamwork, perseverance and personal growth,” said Arenz, who was named to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.

Arenz, the Blue Devils’ sole graduating senior this season, was one of 48 students who received the �� Scholar Athlete Award, given to senior student athletes with a cumulative 3.5 GPA.

She also received the Outstanding Student Leader of the Year award at the annual Leadership Awards this spring and was nominated for the 2024 WHG Humanitarian Award.

Arenz earned her B.S. in early childhood education on May 4, along with 1,037 graduates and plans to continue her education and become a language speech pathologist at an elementary school.

My experiences at �� have made a monumental difference helping me to better understand my future aspirations in life.

Stout has set me up for success in my future and has prepared me to work in my field by giving me many preteaching and teaching placements where I could observe and have hands-on learning with children of all ages.

I’ve taught in Baldwin-Woodville in a kindergarten classroom, a pre-K classroom in Minneapolis, and had many experiences in Menomonie ranging from 1-year-olds up to third-graders.

With each of these classrooms, I learned many new strategies and ideas and, of course, built my resume.

What stands out about your �� experience?

What stands out to me about my Stout experience is how special this community makes me feel. The welcoming atmosphere and inclusive community immediately made me feel at home.

From the friendly faces on campus to the supportive faculty and staff, I found a sense of belonging that enriched my college experience.

How did your campus involvement impact your experience?

Being a member of �� . women ��. basketball team made my journey at Stout so memorable.

I was lucky enough to make history at Stout with my teammates, who will continue to be my lifelong friends.

We became WIAC regular-season champions, WIAC tournament champions, made the NCAA Sweet 16 and broke countless scoring records.

From all my home games at Johnson Fieldhouse, where we led our conference in attendance, to winning the conference and making it to the NCAA national tournament gave me such amazing memories that will last a lifetime.

I have been awarded as a scholar athlete all four years and made the Dean's list every semester.

I am most proud of how I put myself out there to make the most of all my experiences.

Wood Medallion recipients Charest, Timm share experiences in service on and off campus

Alongside more than 100 of their peers, 13 seniors were awarded the Samuel E. Wood Medallion for their outstanding leadership in student involvement at �� . annual Leadership Awards ceremony.

The program, held on May 1, included Outstanding Student Leader; Student Employee of the Year; Outstanding Cooperative Education and Internship Student of the Year and more.

The event was sponsored by the Involvement Center, Stout Student Association and Career Services. Those nominated for awards also were recognized.

Wood Medallion winners

The Wood Medallion is the highest nonacademic award for students at ��. Less than 1% of full-time students receive the award. It is presented to seniors who have contributed in student activities, leadership and scholastic ability. Winners are chosen by a committee representing faculty, staff and students.

Samuel E. Wood was a longtime assistant chancellor for Student Services/Dean of Students. He retired in 1991 and died in February 2013.

Charest and Timm are honored to receive the Wood Medallion, they said.

“It is a true honor to be associated with Samuel ��. name. He was a pioneer here at Stout, and I am very proud of receiving his leadership award,” Charest said. “Even though all my actions came from the bottom of my heart, it is touching to know that my contribution, as well as that of other students, is being underlined and rewarded. It sets a great example for the next generation of students.”

Timm received the award along with two of her classmates and rugby teammates and feels privileged to join the prestigious group of campus leaders.

“This award is not just a reflection of my efforts, but a testament to the communities built here on campus,” she said. “The amount of support and inspiration from all the individuals I have had the privilege to work with make it so easy to dedicate my time and service. To know I am joining this amazing group of leaders is so motivating to continue to strive for excellence in leadership.”

An outstanding researcher and scholar athlete

Charest was a student premedicine adviser through the Pre-Health Society, advising and mentoring younger students seeking medical school. He served as a biology and chemistry student tutor; a biochemistry and organic chemistry teacher assistant; and a neuroimmunology student researcher, assisting Professor Jennifer Grant.

He recently received the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Management Outstanding Undergraduate Researcher award at �� . annual Research Day.

He volunteered as a certified nursing assistant in palliative care at Dove West Healthcare and in the emergency department at Mayo Clinic in Menomonie. He also assisted in the French class at Menomonie High School, as French is his first language.

Charest played forward on the Blue Devil men ��. ice hockey team. He was one of 48 seniors recognized as a �� Scholar Athlete, an award given to senior student athletes with a 3.5 grade point average or higher.

“Many people believed in me and paved the way for me to succeed, so being able to have these opportunities meant the world to me. They allowed me to fulfill my desire to leave a positive and long-lasting impact on my fellow students, my professors, �� and the Menomonie community,” he said.

Charest graduated on May 4 and is returning to Quebec. He will attend medical school starting in September.

Advocating for teacher excellence and the polytechnic advantage

Timm served as president of the Stout Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, was a Student Unit officer for the Wisconsin Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and was named a student representative for the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction ��. Professional Standards Council for Teachers.

She served as vice president of Phi Upsilon Omicron, an academic honor society that builds relationships with community families and supports them through acts of service.

She is a tour guide with the Admissions Office, is a resident adviser and hall manager with University Housing, and was captain, president and treasurer of the women ��. club rugby team.

“My journey at �� has helped prepare me for my future. I have been fortunate to have had many professional development opportunities that have given me a strong network and perspective on my role in education, and I look forward to growing more,” Timm said. “I take pride in advocating for teacher excellence and finding ways to reward our teachers, who are making a difference in their students’ and co-workers’ lives and communities.

“As a tour guide, I love meeting prospective students and giving them a brief view of life as a Blue Devil,” she added. “I love showing families why I love Stout and how our polytechnic advantage can benefit their education. Being a small part of their decision to be a Blue Devil is just so exciting.”

Timm will student teach culinary at Hudson High School this fall and graduate in December. She has already received a job offer from Hudson to teach family and consumer sciences.

Outstanding CEIP Student of the Year Award

The Outstanding Cooperative Education and Internship Program Student of the Year Award was given to 25 students.

This past year, Career Services reported nearly 1,030 students participated in co-ops and internships through Career Services at more than 650 employers in 32 states and four international countries.

The winners are selected by the program ��. Advisory Committee for excellence and achievements in their positions, for contributions to their employers and for academic achievement.

Center at the heart of Heritage Hall project provides critical career training through community service

Families from around Wisconsin are facing significant shortages of quality child care programs, caused in large part by a shortage of licensed early childhood staff.

�� is committed to building the state ��. child care workforce through its Child and Family Study Center, School of Education programs and collaborative programs within Heritage Hall and across campus.

Recently, Child Care Partnership conducted a survey on child care capacity related to the early childhood teacher shortage and the impacts in western Wisconsin. Of the 116 licensed group child care centers in the 10-county area, 70% responded to the survey.

They reported having to adjust their capacity because of a shortage of qualified staff. And although the group centers reported hiring almost 600 times in the last 12 months, there are still more than 300 staff positions open. In addition to adjusted capacity, more than 50 classrooms closed, resulting in a loss of more than 1,600 child care slots.

In these counties, waiting lists for families outweigh availability, with 90% of programs reporting a waiting list of more than 4,000 children. And across the state, three or more children compete for every available child care spot, with 54% of Wisconsin residents living in child care deserts.

Without support around the child care staffing crisis, 16% of CCP group child care programs reported they were facing closure due to the ongoing issue of not having qualified staff.

As part of Gov. Evers proposed 2023-25 budget, $340 million would be invested in the Child Care Counts: COVID-19 Stabilization Payment Program, along with $22 million to support the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families’ Partner Up! Program.

Without ongoing financial support through programs like Child Care Counts and Partner Up!, 44% of CCP programs were unsure they would remain in business, and 21% felt they would close in the near future.

Child Care Partnership, a Western Dairyland Community Action Agency program, serves Buffalo, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, St. Croix, and Trempealeau counties and the Ho-Chunk Nation. Its goal is to increase access to consistent, affordable and quality child care services.

University center helping to make a difference

The Child and Family Study Center practices the university ��. polytechnic mission of providing hands-on experiences to undergraduate and master ��. students to prepare them for careers in child care and early childhood education. The CFSC also helps train future teachers, counselors and dietitians through academic instruction, research, classroom observations and service-learning.

This year, 63 children of university students, faculty, staff and community members are participating in CFSC programming. / ��

The CFSC is licensed by the state. Instructional staff teach in five classrooms and labs in two locations on campus: the Infant/Toddler Lab in Heritage Hall, with children 6 weeks through 3 years of age; and the Preschool, with children 3 to 6 years, including the 4K program, in partnership with the School District of the Menomonie Area.

As a National Association for the Education of Young Children accredited program, the CFSC is held to guidelines regarding teacher preparation. It holds a five-star rating in the YoungStar system, which ensures the health and safety of child care in Wisconsin.

“We have a reputation of quality and intentional programming to support children's success,” said Director Allison Feller. “Our qualified staff exemplify excellence and directly impact our program's success. By staying abreast of current research and developments in the field of early childhood education, they mentor future educators who are prepared to enter the workforce.”

This year, 63 children of university students, faculty, staff and community members are in CFSC programming. They represent diverse cultural backgrounds and receive care and learning opportunities for up to 10 hours each day, 50 hours each week.

Each year, the CFSC collaborates with more than 20 programs across campus, with more than 650 university students engaging in professional development practices.

Undergraduate programs represented include early childhood education; art education; and human development and family studies; and master ��. programs include school counseling; school psychology; clinical mental health counseling and nutrition and dietetics.

“We're educating highly qualified candidates for programs when children are at the most critical stage of development,” Feller said.

Kayla Hewitt, an early childhood education alum, is a behavioral therapist with an early intervention program. She works one-on-one with children ages 2 and older, who are on the autism spectrum. Using applied behavior analysis, Hewitt guides children to understand their abilities to their best advantage, so that they may have the most independent life they can.

“My education from Stout has given me the best tools to excel in my position,” Hewitt said. “I use individualization and differentiation every single day. I also utilize the training I received at Stout to create plans for programming, thinking outside the box for creatively presenting new learning objectives while aiming for the most multimodal experience for the child. The skills I learned to help manage classrooms and learning environments, as well as building family relationships and rapport, has helped me to be the best behavior therapist I can be.”

The Preschool building opened in 1971; the Heritage Hall Infant/Toddler Lab opened in 1973.

The Heritage Hall renovation will support building a new CFSC, strengthening state-of-the-art programming and curriculum to keep �� students at the forefront of innovative and evidence-based early childhood services. A newly designed center will also include a common space for faculty, staff, community partners and families to expand existing collaborations and campus initiatives.

The renovation of Heritage Hall, which received priority approval from the UW System Board of Regents, is ranked No. 1 in the Chippewa Valley and No. 3 for major academic building renovation projects. Renovation is slated to begin in 2026.

Community partnerships, campus collaborations benefit multiple stakeholders

The collaborations between the Child and Family Study Center and cross-campus programs offer university students – who are preparing to enter Wisconsin ��. child care workforce – multiple experiential learning opportunities to work with children and families.

Professor Christine Peterson believes the CFSC positively impacts M.S. and Ed.S. school psychology students. They assess 3K students for their clinical practicums to profile preacademic skills at the beginning and end of each academic year.

This collaboration benefits multiple stakeholders, Peterson explained, including the graduate students who receive applied learning experience; and CFSC instructional staff and parents who receive meaningful information about instruction and a benchmark measure of progress. CFSC submits this data annually to the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

“The CFSC stands out on our campus as a model for lab-based programming; it simultaneously serves multiple programs, enhances the applied student experience for not only preservice teachers but multiple other disciplines, and provides a critical community service,” Peterson said.

Clinical mental health counseling Professor Julie Bates-Maves believes �� . labs, like the CFSC, are at the heart of the university ��. polytechnic distinction.

“This indispensable lab brings life to the developmental considerations, attachment theory, and social and emotional development we teach in our courses,” Bates-Maves said. “Having the opportunity to try on one ��. counseling skills with young populations is critical, as is the opportunity to observe developmental expression in person versus simply reading about it.

“The center provides a model of healthy caregiving, allowing our students to further observe interactional styles between adults and children that support emotional development. As emerging professional counselors, our students will educate parents and caregivers on how to support children in the midst of normal development, but also those experiencing developmental crises,” Bates-Maves said.

This spring semester, Assistant Professor Lindsay Heidelberger, program director of M.S. nutrition and dietetics, has connected Professor Deb Sheats to collaborate with CFSC staff to provide master's students in the Nutrition Education and Counseling course with hands-on, polytechnic learning. Students will observe meal times at the CFSC, conduct needs assessments with staff and create nutrition education video lessons for children and their families.

“Having access to the CFSC has been integral to the students’ learning by providing experiential learning in a real-world setting as a nutrition educator,” Heidelberger said.

The Child & Family Study Center (CFSC) focuses on the "whole child" representing all areas of development: intellectual, physical, social, and emotional. Educational Theory & Hands-On Practice

The Child & Family Study Center is a university education laboratory school committed to creating a link between educational theory and hands-on practice. Infant & Toddler Education Lab

��'s Infant & Toddler Education Lab is a certified childcare center for the university staff, students, and the Menomonie community. Students in the School of Education's B.S. Early Childhood Education program provide childcare for children ages 0-3. Aaron Wisecup, a senior in ECE, assists in and teaches children for nine weeks during the semester.

"We really focus on teaching the children self-help skills and social and emotional skills, like learning to share toys, take turns, and asking friends if they are hurt," Wisecup said.

Working alongside other student staff and experienced faculty, and watching the children progress gives students the necessary experience to benefit in their future teaching careers.

Education students help to inspire others to meet the growing need of teachers in Wisconsin

Nearly 150 high school students from 27 schools around the state attended Teach Day at �� on Nov. 14.

Hosted by the School of Education, the event is an opportunity for high school students to learn from �� teacher education students and for university students to practice their skills as future teachers.

“We are thrilled to be hosting so many students from across the state,” said SOE Director Deanna Schultz. “The interest in teaching as a future career is exciting to see, and we hope these young people will leave with information and the determination to continue on this career path.”

Over the next five years, Wisconsin is projected to need nearly 2,400 additional qualified teachers, with job growth expected to increase by 3.5% over the next decade. The value of graduates from ��'s education programs has never been greater for Wisconsin schools.

University students led much of Teach Day, with support from program directors. Students shared why they chose the university, why they plan to enter the teaching profession and led breakout sessions where high school students learned about their program of interest.

Isabelle Whited, a visiting student from Wausau West High School, joined the technology education group. “I found technology was an area I excelled in. I wouldn’t have explored it if it weren’t for my teacher Mr. Peterson. I want to help other students explore and excel in technology,” Whited said.

High school students learned how to write a lesson plan, which they could take back to their schools and use to teach a class. They also toured campus and met with university students during lunch to talk more about their programs of interest.

Event responds to growing need for teachers

Last year ��. pilot program focused on family and consumer sciences education; marketing and business education; and technology education. About a dozen Wisconsin high school students attended.

Teach Day, this year, expanded to include nearly all undergraduate SOE programs: art education; early childhood education; family and consumer sciences; marketing and business education; math education; special education; and technology education.

“The expansion resulted in an increase in numbers, especially those interested in early childhood education. The event was also marketed to teachers at the �� Family and Consumer Education Conference in September, and many of them brought their students to Teach Day,” Schultz said.

Students interested in early childhood education and family and consumer sciences made up nearly two-thirds of the attending registrants.

Sarah Korte, a junior in family and consumer sciences, volunteered during Teach Day “because I know that not only do we need teachers, but I love to inspire and encourage others to find what they love to do in life.”

Korte was in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America in high school. FCCLA and her family and consumer sciences teacher helped her learn that she loves to teach.

“I love this event because I get to share my passion for teaching, and I get to teach other people about my major and ��. This event gives people the opportunity to explore teaching in an interactive way,” Korte said.

Technology education majors Sam Konieczny and Ben Schmitt also volunteer during Teach Day. Their high school technology education teachers were influential in their decisions to teach.

Schmitt assisted his teacher in high school, working with his classmates and stepping up into a leadership role. “I hope my involvement with Teach Day gives high school students that opportunity to experience teaching for a day and gain clarity about a path to teaching through ��,” he said.

“Teach Day gives high school students who are looking at a career in education a chance to see the other side of the desk and what Stout has to offer them,” Konieczny added.

Konieczny believes education is one of the most rewarding careers. “It is the best thing to be working with someone and watch what they weren’t understanding click and make sense. And to work and inspire students to find themselves and prepare them for a future in a career that excites them,” he said.

Korte, of Wisconsin Rapids, hopes to student teach at Mauston High School before graduating in spring 2024. She plans to teach in central Wisconsin. Konieczny and Schmitt plan to student teach in fall 2023 and graduate that semester. Schmitt, of Somerset, would like to teach in western Wisconsin.

Konieczny, from Oak Creek, a Milwaukee suburb, would like to “go back to the Milwaukee area and give back to the community that helped me get to where I am today,” he said. “When I look back at some of the people who made the biggest difference in my life, it was my teachers. For me to think I can make that same difference and influence someone in that way is something that excites me.”

�� . School of Education, housed in Heritage Hall, offers seven undergraduate teaching degrees, as well as postgraduate degrees in career and technical education, education, school counseling and school psychology and eight education certificates and certifications.

SOE programs are among the many workforce-ready programs administered in Heritage Hall, a near-50-year-old building that is scheduled for major renovation after receiving priority approval from the UW System Board of Regents. Professors at �� . School of Education have developed an instrument for measuring students’ dispositions, part of the school ��. assessment system for its seven undergraduate teacher education programs.

The disposition committee presented “Professional Dispositions: Development, Validation and Implementation” to colleagues from universities around the country at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education conference in March, in New Orleans.

A disposition is the professional attitudes, values and beliefs of educators, demonstrated through their verbal and nonverbal behaviors as they interact with students, families, colleagues and communities.

The committee developed the new disposition instrument to measure education students’ progress as they reach benchmarks within their teaching programs. Students’ dispositions are reviewed by faculty and staff before they begin student teaching.

The committee identified 15 dispositions to be measured that fit under five major categories: collaboration, continuous learning, inclusiveness, professionalism and reflection.

Kevin Mason, special education program director and disposition committee chair, believes it is “absolutely vital for every teacher to be able to collaborate and communicate effectively and respectfully with students and families. Those skills cannot be measured on a standardized exam for teacher licensure.

“At ��, we teach our preservice teachers to work effectively with students and families in our courses and through a variety of field experiences in the classroom. We want our graduates to be great with kids and contribute positively to their school and community,” he said.

After the conference, Mason received several requests from colleagues around the country who wanted more information.

“The attendees were very impressed with the development, validation and implementation of our professional disposition instrument at ��,” Mason said. “Some have adapted it for their own teacher education programs.”

Assistant Professor Julienne Cuccio Slichko at the College of St. Rose created self-paced modules for their students to learn about the dispositions. “We are so very grateful to �� . department for getting us started,” she said.

The committee members are Mason; Ann Carlisle, art education; Allison Feller, Child and Family Study Center; Diane Klemme, family and consumer science education; Jim McMullen, school counseling; Chris Peterson, school psychology; and Deb Stanislawski, marketing and business education.

AACTE is a nonprofit national alliance of education programs dedicated to the professional development of pre-K-12 teachers and school leaders, representing more than 800 postsecondary institutions with educator preparation programs.

A renovation to support Wisconsin ��. workforce needs

�� . School of Education, housed in Heritage Hall, offers seven undergraduate teaching degrees and five postgraduate teaching degrees, as well as eight education certificates and certifications

SOE is working to fill a statewide need for teachers, as many school districts struggle to fill existing positions. Wisconsin K-12 schools made nearly 3,700 emergency teacher hires in 2020, according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

SOE graduates approximately 100 undergraduate students and 25 graduate students each year, with a 99% employment rate within six months of graduating.

Heritage Hall, one of the university ��. busiest classroom and lab buildings, serves more than 2,000 students each academic year. It is also home to the School of Hospitality Leadership, nutrition and family health, and the Weidner Center for residential property management. It will be the future home of four Graduate School programs in clinical mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology and school counseling.

Major renovation of Heritage Hall ranked No. 1 in Chippewa Valley, third for UW System academic buildings

A critical renovation project of one of �� . busiest classroom and lab buildings has taken a major step forward.

A major renovation of the hall received priority approval on Aug. 19, at the UW System Board of Regents meeting held at UW-Green Bay. The project is ranked No. 1 in the Chippewa Valley and third for UW System academic buildings.

The state job outlook for graduates from most of the programs based in the building is expected to grow between 6% and 15% by 2025. The improved capacity provided by the Heritage Hall renovations will help provide qualified Wisconsin workers to address workforce needs.

The Board of Regents’ action means that the renovation will be in the UW System ��. capital request to the Legislature for the 2023-25 state budget. If the $120,614,000 project is included in the state budget, final approval still is needed by the State Building Commission. Construction could begin as early as fall 2025 and will take about 24 months.

With the current statewide and national teacher shortage in mind, University of Wisconsin-Stout Professor Lindsay Barnhart understood there was a need to support working adults in obtaining licensure to teach.

As program director for early childhood education in the School of Education, Barnhart received several inquiries from working adults who were hoping for an online degree option.

“Our traditional face-to-face, four-year program didn’t meet the needs of these individuals,” she said.

“�� . new online early childhood education degree was created specifically for working adults with an associate degree, coursework completed at another institution, a degree in another field or currently licensed teachers in another area.”

The program was approved by the Provost ��. Office on March 4. Applications are open, and classes begin this fall semester.

Online option allows adults flexibility

As online ECE students work toward certification to teach birth through third grade in regular education and special education in Wisconsin, their coursework is the same as on-campus students.

However, classes are synchronous and asynchronous, allowing students to connect with their peers as they engage in content while giving them the flexibility to study around their work or home schedule.

Barnhart and faculty work with online students to build a personalized learning plan based on their previous coursework or degree.

“Each student will need 120 credits to graduate. However, their plan is based on the credits that they transfer in,” she explained. “A specific course offering is scheduled, and students may follow it as closely as desired to graduate as soon as possible.”

A field experience and student teaching are required and may be completed near students’ homes.

“A common message we hear from alumni and school administrators is how well our graduates are prepared to teach. It speaks to the quality of the program and the faculty,” said Deanna Schultz, interim associate dean of the College of Education, Hospitality, Health and Human Sciences.

The School of Education offers nine undergraduate programs, as well as five Graduate School programs, numerous education certificates and add-on teaching certifications.

Donor Herwig hopes graduates become advocates and agents of change

Joan Herwig started her education in a one-room country school in Deansville, Wis. Her experiences there and in Lodi, Wis. schools, under the guidance of inspiring teachers, led her to pursue a degree in home economics education at ��.

“I had long wanted to teach. I never had any doubt,” Herwig said. “My vision for my future to lead a wonderful life was to study at Stout, earn a degree and teach in Wisconsin. Things turned out quite different.”

Herwig said �� accelerated her academic life. She named two major factors that changed her career path. First, in the fall of her junior year in 1963, she was selected as a �� representative to attend Merrill-Palmer Institute in Detroit.

Her courses centered around the institute ��. mission to promote and improve the development and well-being of children and their families. She witnessed the creation of Head Start, her instructors having a key role in the development of the national standards for the program.

“At that time, Stout did not offer an early childhood education degree,” Herwig said. “My experience at Merrill-Palmer forever changed my content area from broad home economics to child development.”

The second factor that changed Herwig ��. career path was a Student National Education Association meeting concerning academic careers as university and college faculty. “I remember a feeling of ‘ah-ha.’ Whoever thought about that – of higher education as a career path? These experiences specific to Stout opened so many doors for me.”

Herwig, a first-generation student from a large family, graduated with her bachelor ��. in 1965. Now in her late 70s, looking back at her career, Herwig wants to support students seeking a similar path.

Through the Stout University Foundation, she has established the Dr. Joan Herwig Early Childhood Education Endowed Scholarship, designed for first-generation early childhood education juniors.

Herwig ��. gift of $50,000 will award a $1,750 scholarship annually, starting in the 2022-23 academic year.

Leading to higher education

The first four years after she graduated, Herwig taught home economics and English to seventh- and eighth-graders in Port Huron, Mich. In the summers, she taught and led the district ��. Head Start program, seeing firsthand how the program envisioned at Merrill-Palmer benefited young students and their families.

Herwig remembered a 5-year-old Head Start student named Kathy, who often forgot to wear her glasses and came to school hungry. On a home visit, Herwig talked with Kathy ��. older sister, an eighth-grade home economics student of hers during the regular school year. Herwig ��. student promised she would help her younger sister remember her glasses and have breakfast each morning before leaving the house.

“I was working with more than the Head Start children. I worked with their older brothers and sisters too. I made connections with their families,” she said.

From Port Huron, Herwig moved on to earn her master ��. from Iowa State and her Ph.D. from Purdue, both in child development, and taught child development at Iowa State from 1971 until her retirement in 2003 as professor emeritus.

In that time, she had opportunities to travel the world as an educator, researcher and early childhood advocate. She was a Fulbright Scholar in 1991 and 1992, working with faculty across India in early childhood education and development. Soon after, she was invited to attend an international symposium in Zurich, Switzerland, which led to an unexpected encounter.

After the symposium, she traveled with a friend through the Alps and stayed in a Swiss hotel. One day, they wandered into a meeting room, where small Rotary International banners were displayed.

“It so happened that the first banner she saw was from Menomonie, Wisconsin,” she said. “I could hardly believe it. It was one of those stunning things in life that characterize the out-of-the-blue things that can happen.”

Making a foundational difference

Herwig believes early childhood education is the foundation in building a child's developmental, social, and academic progress. She has seen countless early childhood education students make a difference in the lives of children and their families.

“The early years are essential, and the higher quality experience we can offer children and their families, the more optimal their development, which benefits all,” she said.

Herwig wanted to create an endowed scholarship because she understands the support systems for first-generation students are different. “You don’t have that connection at home to help you navigate and feel more confident,” Herwig said. “You rely on the university, your adviser and your fellow students to show you options and to help believe in yourself.”

She hopes the scholarship helps alleviate some financial pressure for recipients to help them focus on academics and internships rather than work. And she encourages graduates to share their best practices beyond their place of work – to see the possibilities in administrative roles, serving as advocates in professional organizations and creating new legislation to promote the importance of childhood, funding and curriculums offered.

“I hope they see themselves as change-agents in the broader world around them, wherever they are. I hope they dream big and dare to adventure. There ��. a big world out there,” Herwig said. “The potential is there. Invite the people around you to keep learning. They may want to be adventurers too. Take a risk sometimes even if it ��. not comfortable.”

“I could not have envisioned the possibilities without my Stout experiences,” she added.

Three University of Wisconsin-Stout School of Education students have been awarded 2021-22 scholarships from the Education Foundation of Phi Upsilon Omicron, totaling $7,950.

Phi U is the National Honor Society in family and consumer sciences and related fields, such as early childhood education. It bestows scholarships to inspire students to continue their Phi U goals of lifelong learning, leadership and service.

�� recipients are:

Brianna North, early childhood education: Phyllis S. Howe Scholarship, $5,800
Tara Weber, family and consumer sciences education: Delores M. Kluckman Scholarship, $1,200
Alexis Setzer, family and consumer sciences education: Jackman Scholarship, $950

Lindsay Barnhart, ECE program director and Phi U adviser, believes “Brianna, Tara and Lexi are prime examples of strong students who display their leadership through service. Not only are they involved in Phi U, but they are highly involved in other organizations and excel in their coursework along with connecting to the greater community.”

Diane Klemme, FCSE program director, and Deanna Schultz, interim associate dean of the College of Education, Hospitality, Health and Human Sciences, are proud of the students’ national scholarships and their commitment to Phi U.

“Our faculty work hard to help our students develop into lifelong learners and leaders, and it is wonderful to see our students be recognized for that,” Schultz said.

Brianna North: ‘Who I am in ECE’

As a child, North envisioned herself as an OB/GYN because of her love for babies and families. But when her parents and teachers told her she would be a great teacher, she started to think about a career in education.

In high school, she volunteered at a preschool and found her love for early childhood education.

“When I was little, I always played ‘school’ with my siblings and cousins, where I played the teacher,” said North, of Greenwood. “I realized hospital environments were not for me. The idea of teaching became more concrete after I pieced together my interests, experiences and past.”

With a tentative goal of teaching kindergarten or first grade, North ��. hands-on experiences in �� . ECE program help her apply what she learns in class. Her placement in community classrooms range from birth to third grade. “We undergo practical experiences where we teach lessons, manage a classroom and assess the children,” she said.

North, a senior this fall, has served as Phi U ��. initiation chair and will be vice president this year. She also serves as vice president of Aspiring Educators of Wisconsin.

“Phi U is a low-stress and inviting organization that opens the door to many opportunities,” North said. “It can take you out of your comfort zone, get you active in the community and help you meet so many wonderful people.”

“These experiences and leadership roles have helped me become more confident and help me form who I am in ECE,” she added.

Tara Weber: ‘Doing what I love to help people’

Weber loved playing “school” with her twin sister and knew she wanted to be a teacher when she grew up. But she didn’t know what kind of teacher she wanted to be. She liked to cook and bake, watching her mom and grandmothers in the kitchen.

Then, her family and consumer sciences class in middle school sparked her interests. Her high school courses and extracurricular activities working with younger students confirmed her decision to be an FCS educator.

Weber, a senior this fall, will begin her student teaching next spring. She feels that �� . FCSE program is well-rounded and she ��. prepared to have her own classroom.

“My knowledge and passion toward family and consumer sciences has grown immensely, and I look forward to teaching and inspiring my future students to appreciate what FCS has to offer,” said Weber, of Dorchester.

“The hands-on way of teaching lets me put into practice my knowledge,” she added.

Weber, who has a minor in human development and family studies, served as vice president of Phi U and will be president this academic year. She is past president of the Stout Association of Family and Consumer Sciences. She enjoys making a positive impact and giving back to the community through Phi U ��. professional projects, whether being a pen pal to residents in nursing homes or donating blankets to Stepping Stones’ Winter Haven, a warming shelter.

“It is activities like these that reassure me that I am doing what I love to help people,” she said. “I am very passionate about the path I am taking, and being awarded this scholarship just confirms to me that I have made the right decision.”

Alexis Setzer: ‘My dream career’

Setzer, a junior this fall, has always had an interest in FCS, whether cooking, baking or sewing. And child care and development are a large part of her life as there are many children in her family, including three nieces.

Whenever someone asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, her answer every time was “a teacher.” But she didn’t realize until her junior year in high school how much she loved family and consumer science.

“I remember sitting in my Child Development class, taught by one of my role models, and it just clicked. Being a family and consumer science educator is my dream career,” said Setzer, of North Branch, Minn.

Her high school teacher encouraged her to consider �� . FCSE program. “The program allows you so many opportunities to work with students before going out and teaching them on your own,” she said. “It is very informational, and I have received so much knowledge that I can apply to my future career. It has helped me grow into the person I am today.”

Setzer, who has a minor in human development and family studies, will serve as president of the Stout Association of Family and Consumer Sciences this year. She is the treasurer of Phi U.

“In Phi U, you get to meet so many people,” she said. “We get to work with the community and the environment. I have learned even more about FCSE since joining Phi U.”

North, Weber and Setzer encourage FCSE and related majors to join Phi U and apply for scholarships if eligible. Their scholarships will help provide financial security as they work to finish their degrees and will be acknowledged in the fall issue of the Candle, Phi U ��. official journal.

�� . School of Education has prepared teachers and educators since 1891. It offers seven undergraduate programs, five graduate programs and post-baccalaureate educator certifications.
