University ��. 360-degree approach to artificial intelligence aims to ‘equip students with hands-on experience and an applied understanding’

As �� continues to strengthen its 360-degree approach to artificial intelligence, embedding skills across all programs, faculty experts across degree fields build on their growing knowledge with research spanning generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), machine learning, AI deep research methods and more.

Three professors – Augustine Twumasi, Cami Banger and Justin Nicholes – representing �� . mathematics, statistics and computer science; hospitality and technology innovation; and English, philosophy and communication studies departments – demonstrate the wide range of research topics and challenges they’re tackling through AI to impact their fields and improve their students’ polytechnic experience.

The university ��. AI Fellows and AI Innovation Committee, led by faculty and staff, ensures AI is embedded into learning, operations and innovation, while directing AI integration, governance, ethics and literacy. The interdisciplinary AI Fellows is supported by 2023-25 Workforce Development funding.

Machine learning in engineering and manufacturing

Artificial intelligence and machine learning Assistant Professor Augustine Twumasi ��. research broadly focuses on developing intelligent systems that integrate machine learning, optimization, and physics-based modeling to solve complex engineering and scientific challenges.

Machine learning is a subfield of AI. It is a way for computers to think, learn and act just like humans. As the term “artificial” suggests, this form of intelligence is created by humans. “Machine learning is a way we make computers intelligent and capable of performing such tasks without explicitly teaching them how to do so. It does this by identifying patterns in data,” he said.

“One aspect of my work involves robot path planning in Robotic Compact Storage and Retrieval Systems (RCSRS), where I use reinforcement learning and advanced optimization algorithms to improve retrieval efficiency and scheduling, helping robotic systems make faster and more adaptive decisions in dynamic environments,” Twumasi said.

Another major focus of his research is laser scan path design in Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) additive manufacturing. “In this research, I apply deep reinforcement learning and physics-guided machine learning to design toolpaths that control microstructure evolution, to enhance the mechanical performance of printed parts,” he said.

RCSRS are widely used in the logistics, e-commerce, manufacturing, and warehousing industries, particularly in automated fulfillment centers, pharmaceutical inventory systems, grocery distribution and retail supply chains. The systems help optimize storage density, retrieval speed and operational efficiency.

L-PBF technology is central to aerospace, automotive, biomedical, and defense industries, where it is used to produce lightweight, high-strength metal components with complex geometries. It ��. also increasingly applied in energy, tooling and custom medical implants because of its precision ability.

Twumasi ��. current and upcoming projects also explore scientific machine learning, uncertainty quantification, and AI-driven modeling for smart manufacturing and logistics optimization. He hopes to soon recruit student researchers.

GenAI and business technology

Assistant Professor Cami Banger, program director of business information technology and digital marketing technology, is leading a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) study titled “Reimagining Assignment Design: An Exploratory Study of AI-Assisted TILT Implementation.”

“The project explores how instructors can use generative AI to redesign assignments using the Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TILT) framework, which focuses on clarity, grading efficiency and student learning outcomes,” she said.

Banger ��. AI research and teaching intersect around GenAI and its practical implementation in higher education and business technology. She has developed and is currently teaching a professional development course, AI Implementation Strategy, where students design organizational AI strategies aligned to NIST, IBM, and McKinsey frameworks. The course integrates real-world AI tools and showcases how polytechnic learning can connect strategy, ethics and technology practice.

She is incorporating AI across the business information technology and digital marketing technology programs and highlights her research in her article “Generative AI is coming to the workplace, so I designed a business technology class with AI baked in,” published in The Conversation.

“From piloting CoPilot for Business in our capstone course and doing CRM case simulations using Salesforce with GenAI support to reflective assignments on ethical AI use in business, these projects collectively aim to equip students with hands-on experience and an applied understanding of AI in business and technology contexts, which aligns closely with Stout ��. polytechnic mission,” Banger said.

Human vs. GenAI poetry

Associate Professor Justin Nicholes, director of First-Year Composition, explored “Ownership, Accuracy, and Aesthetic Merit” in human and AI-generated poetry.

His research, published earlier this year in “Written Communication,” asked the questions, Would college students judge their poems differently from those written by GenAI? Would they feel a stronger sense of ownership of their writing versus AI-generated poetry?

“With each passing semester and academic year, students’ attitudes and experiences with generative AI change,” Nicholes said. “One surprising result from my research into asking students to write with and without AI through poetry, and about autobiographical moments, is that students increasingly see GenAI as a tool that enhances their personal meaning-making. It is not enough to simply dismiss GenAI writing as a form of cheating. While some will refuse GenAI, especially for personal and creative expression, there is a role, and we need to keep trying to understand how students see GenAI tools and the writing they produce with and without it.”

For his research, Nicholes recruited 88 first-year students, who composed brief poems about meaningful or challenging life experiences, such as loss, pain, anger, disappointment or defeat. They then prompted a GenAI program, such as ChatGPT or Gemini, to compose a poem about that same event.

The students wrote poems that were more narrative, authentic, unguarded and emotionally negative in tone than the GenAI poems.

Following their writing, the students completed surveys to record their perceptions of their own poems and GenAI poems, based on ownership, accuracy and aesthetic merit. Ownership referred to whether the writing reflected an important part of the writers’ selves. Accuracy referred to whether the poem reflected their thoughts and feelings. Aesthetic merit referred to the quality of the writing, with features such as vivid imagery, a feeling of completeness, rhyme, meter, structure and form.

Finally, the students were asked which poem they preferred and why.

Nicholes’ findings showed that the students fairly evenly preferred their poems to the GenAI poems: 42% preferred their poems because of the personal connections to the events; 50% preferred the GenAI poems, mainly for their textual features; and 8% preferred both.

Students felt significantly greater ownership of and accuracy in their human-written poems. And while students rated aesthetic merit higher for GenAI poems, which portrayed greater imagery, language, and form, they felt the GenAI poems lacked originality.

“In terms of implications for teaching writing, meaningful literacy remains a valuable college-writing experience whereby college writers in various writing contexts have chances to create work they view as important parts of themselves, work they see as importantly conveying their life experiences and voices, and work that they see as unique contributions,” Nicholes said. “While GenAI may be used as a tool to assist in autobiographical, meaningful writing, and although it has the potential for assisting writers in ways similar to peer review processes, human creativity is a unique territory worth protecting.”

Kat Schlauderaff is passionate about marketing, social media and content design and was extremely curious about web building, computer programming and analytics.

She came to �� for the digital marketing technology program to explore these aspects.

And although there were a few times when she considered transferring to a larger school in a warmer climate, she stayed for the community.

“What always kept me grounded at Stout is the amazing people I met. Because the school is smaller, it feels like a cozy environment that I belong in,” she said.

Schlauderaff earned her B.S. in digital marketing technology from �� on May 4, along with 1,037 graduates.

As commencement speaker at the CSTEMM ceremony, she challenged her peers to “Embrace the obstacles that lie ahead with the same tenacity and courage that you’ve shown throughout your journey at Stout. Let the memories of your triumphs serve as a reminder of your inner strength and capability. Dare to dream big, pursue all your passions relentlessly and never underestimate your ability to overcome hardships. Our journey may have had its struggles, but it has prepared us to start our path toward extraordinary achievements.”

Schlauderaff hopes to move to a big city like Seattle, New York City or Chicago and work in search engine optimization, web development or product management for a company that she is passionate about.

“I hope to continue on my journey of becoming the person I always wanted to be as a kid,” she said.

How has your �� experience changed you?

I’ve undergone a profound transformation since my first year. My resilience, interpersonal skills and overall character have undergone significant refinement.

The immense opportunities, ranging from theatrical engagements to immersive field trips, have propelled me beyond my comfort zone, fostering personal growth and self-awareness. Through avenues like theater productions, live art exhibits, and even a choir tour to Puerto Rico, I've forged deeper connections with both myself and my aspirations, creating a profound sense of purpose.

These years have been precious to me, and I will not forget how they changed me.

I believe that Stout has prepared me well to work in my field. The knowledge I have gained about marketing has been invaluable to me. In talking with marketing professionals, I am able to keep up in conversations that rely heavily on abbreviations, industry standards and widely used practices.

How did your involvement on campus impact your experience?

Ever since my first semester at Stout I have been involved on campus. As a very sentimental person, the hardest part of saying goodbye to these clubs is going to be the people.

I have been a part of the Chamber Choir for my entire college career. The choir is where I attribute finding my friend group and where I truly belong. I got to go on a concert tour with them in Puerto Rico, sing at other gigs and participate in our biannual concerts. I was also a part of the Devil Tones acappella group.

I was an ensemble member in University Theatre ��. production of “Be More Chill” in spring 2023 and played the character of Rose in the production of “Dogfight” this spring.

The theater is where I truly have blossomed and found my place. Having the opportunity to create art with others is a true blessing.

I was the marketing manager for the Innovative Digital Marketing Association, which led me to find two of my mentors and best friends in my degree, Gabby and JJ. Though they both graduated last year, I still sometimes find myself messaging them to ask for advice or to catch up. The DMT program is quite small, so having peers that I was close to in the major was a game changer for me. They offered me advice, support, and above all, they offered me another place to belong.

I served on University Housing ��. Hall Leadership Committee, creating events like Mental Maintenance to give students a calm environment during finals where they could meditate and take home a self-care goodie bag.

I then became a resident adviser for the Out at Stout residence hall living community and a hall manager. It sounds cheesy, but I have known I was going to be an RA since I was 9 years old seeing my sister as an RA at her school. I want to see others succeed, and I believe I have a knack for helping them find their inner strength to do so. My RAs were the most important people to me, not just as employees but also as students and people.

People ask me why I joined Housing, and my answer is always that I wanted to be a mentor to students and a person that people feel like they can come to. I have spent time getting to know, understand, mentor and be proud of my peers.

At this spring ��. Leadership Awards, I was honored with a Student Staff Team of the Year award as a member of University Housing ��. operations managers team.

My advice for any students who are struggling with college is to take a leap of faith outside of your comfort zone and get involved. College gets a lot harder when you’re alone, and it ��. easy to feel trapped in that state when you’re sitting in your dorm room.

There are a lot of ways to get connected – attend your building ��. events, join a club, sit next to someone you don't know in class, etc. Whatever you choose to do, don’t let yourself fade into the background. You deserve to have a fun college experience.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

One big challenge I faced was burnout. I have been diagnosed with depression, anxiety and ADHD, and they all make me very prone to overdoing it and burning myself out.

However, I was able to get in contact with the Student Counseling Center. I also have an amazing support group, full of hard-working individuals whom I get to call friends.

We all try our very best to succeed while also celebrating each other ��. wins and being there for each other during harder times.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

As my time here at Stout wraps up, I am overwhelmingly proud of myself. Not only am I graduating with honors, but I am also graduating with the honor of knowing I made an impact.

I encouraged others to grow alongside me as I trudged through difficult coursework, fostered spaces where students felt comfortable to speak up for themselves and positively influenced the environment of multiple clubs.

I truly was able to spread my wings and learn about who I am. Yes, I am proud of myself for graduating, but I am more proud of myself for becoming who I am today.

Classes connect with professionals, see creative production process firsthand

Students in �� . Product Photography and Video classes recently gained working knowledge of the relationship between creative direction and photography teams from a multimedia design alum.

Ferenc Andaházy, a 2006 graduate, is creative director with Smartpress, a web-to-print and visual merchandising company in Chanhassen, Minn. Andaházy presented recently with Tim Galdunick, his director of photography, who owns Tim and Madie Photography, in St. Paul.

In 2022, Smartpress decided to increase the number of videos it produced, Andaházy explained to the classes. He, Galdunick and their small team worked for months creating the company ��. spring 2022 video ad.

They contracted and collaborated with many others to bring their video to life – from concept brief to mood boards to “the pitch,” from setting a budget to scheduling shot locations, renting gear, creating custom-designed prints featured in the ad, casting hand models and voiceover actors and hiring score and sound designers, and finally, the set-up before the final cut and post-production.

Lucas Falkavage, a video production major, and Gabby Granger, a digital marketing technology major, learned from the presentation that being able to work with others is one of the most important aspects of video and photo production. They list clear communication, initiative, responsibility and empathy as the most important skills for teamwork.

Falkavage, of Stevens Point, saw the amount of problem-solving that goes into creative projects, even at professional levels. “It ��. really good for students to see industry professionals and their processes. From using a camera they weren’t familiar with, to creating a rig out of PVC to create the perfect slow-motion shot. Creative work means problem solving at all levels,” he said. “Teams can do so much more than individuals. When the time comes to fulfill your role, take charge and do it to the best of your ability.”

Granger, of St. Paul, was most interested to learn about the importance of having different areas of expertise to support an idea. “Everyone has a role they need to execute, and they must work together to achieve the project ��. goals,” she said. “When working on a project, everyone has their unique job and role. It is extremely important to be able to work together to ensure a successful project.”

Video production Program Director Keif Oss said the course “is designed to represent the interdisciplinary aspect that reflects the industry. We train our students to work as both a creative and production team in roles such as director, director of photography, camera operator, lighting gaffer, digital image technician, set design, styling and more.

“Ferenc is a great example of this,” Oss added. “His background in e-commerce, graphic design and, ultimately, creative direction put him in a place where he had to know the fundamental mechanics of photo and video work to direct aspects of his campaigns. Guests like Ferenc and Tim bring value to our classroom by showing students the approaches they are learning are real and applicable. They validate the work we do, and we thank them deeply for their contribution of time, knowledge and experience.”

The course includes students with a photography and video minor, in majors including video production, DMT, graphic design and interactive media; and fashion and retail.

“Inclusion of the minor students is important as students may find themselves working together in the future, while from differing roles in a project ��. pipeline,” Oss said.

“The course taught me valuable lessons about the importance of mastering product photos that appear in digital marketing projects like social media and web design,” Granger said. “Understanding the process for creating high-quality product photos for the web will enable me to produce more impactful results. I am grateful to have this knowledge at the start of my career.”

Focusing on creative careers

Granger chose the DMT degree because of its mix of creativity and technology. “I am able to use my creativity on projects like social media, web design and marketing; and my technology skills on projects like search engine optimization, coding and web programming,” she said.

She graduated on May 6 and is looking for a career where she can contribute to the success of an organization and continue to learn and grow in the industry.

“I valued the willingness of professors to guide me along the way and pass along their industry knowledge. This allowed me to narrow in on not only what I enjoyed, but what I excelled in,” she added.

Falkavage will graduate in May 2024 and wants to go into freelance video production and editing.

“I have always wanted to do creative work. I am inspired by filmmakers and videographers who are able to make people feel real emotions and show them new perspectives through video. My video classes give me the practice and portfolio work to build and show my skills, while the business and marketing classes have prepared me to be independent,” he said.

Keif has an M.S. in Career and Technical Education and an MFA in Digital Filmmaking. He is an Assistant Professor of video production and serving as Program Director for the B.S. Video Production degree. Keif teaches a variety of courses in video production and photography with both narrative and commercial aspects.

Keif has worked on a range of professional and commercial video projects as a senior video producer and owner/independent contractor of A Creative Advocate, LLC. His work includes television/web advertising, documentary, motion graphics and a variety of marketing-oriented materials. Dylan LaFontaine knew that when he came to �� he would work in a variety of hands-on labs in his digital marketing technology and information and communication technologies courses.

“Within my ICT major, the lab-intense courses working with Salesforce CRM, understanding business principles, including marketing, accounting and social media, and eventually putting my knowledge to the test working for a live client, made me feel much more confident about entering the workforce,” he said.

With career interests in business analytics, data science, project management and digital marketing, LaFontaine is applying for jobs in a variety of fields. He earned his double major on May 6, one of 1,173 graduates.

What stands out about your �� experience?

My six-month web development internship at Colony Brands was a great learning experience, from discovering what I like and don’t like, to learning about other career paths. This internship was outstanding because I got exposed to other teams within the digital marketing department, including web merchandising, data analytics and business analysis.

As a web development intern, I put my hands-on learning from web development classes at Stout to the test by updating consumer websites.

One other standout for me was the professors’ approachability and personability. They were always accessible, communicative and supporting through easy or hard projects. I had fun conversations to get to know several of them, and I knew I could always reach out or stop by their office hours when needed.

How did you overcome the challenges you faced in earning your degree?

One of my favorite challenges was in the Web Production and Distribution course, learning HTML and CSS. I remember trying to get a page to have two columns; getting the CSS style tags correct to reflect properly on the website; and finally making my first website as the class ended.

Because of this class, I took more web development classes and I now love using HTML and CSS to create websites. I like it so much that I create my own websites, ranging from study abroad and trip reflections to using websites to showcase work for other classes, including Photography and Graphic Communications. This challenge has shown me how much I like web development.

How did your involvement at �� impact your experience?

I am proud of the variety of involvement I’ve had on campus. I have held several different on-campus job positions. I started as a student manager in University Dining, overseeing the cafeteria operations and helping in all areas. I worked at Week One Orientation twice, helping freshmen transition to campus and taking them to campus events. I also worked in the First-Year Advisement Center as a receptionist, interacting with students and helping advisers as needed. And I was a campus tour guide with the Admissions Office, showing prospective students and families the Stout campus and connecting their interests with opportunities here. Lastly, I was a resident adviser for a second-year community.

These various campus employment experiences, in addition to other opportunities, have made me proud of my campus involvement and to be a Stout student.

My favorite club was Habitat for Humanity. With other members, I did a variety of housework anywhere within an hour radius of Menomonie. Projects ranged from painting and deck staining to taking down old fixtures to installing or cleaning gutters. For spring break my junior year, I went to Brookings, S.D., to do electrical wiring; and Acton, Mass., my senior year to do insulation and drywall. These were very fun and rewarding experiences to help build homes for families. This showed my love for both volunteering and doing housework.

With my other favorite clubs, I served as web development director for Blue Devil Productions; served as vice president for the Society for Human Resource Management; and I would hit one of at least half a dozen different courses a week with the Disc Golf Club.

In all, my variety of involvement in clubs provided me with great experiences and networking opportunities with other Stout students.

Gardiner is using her new communications and marketing skills to expand part-time photography business into career

Abi Gardiner became the first in her family to receive a bachelor ��. degree when she graduated May 8 from University of Wisconsin-Stout.

Beyond the distinction of being a first-generation graduate, Gardiner, of DeForest, achieved something else that anyone would be hard-pressed to match: She finished three degrees at the same time.

Plus, she did it in four years — the standard time most students take to get one bachelor ��..

With degrees in graphic communications, digital marketing technology and information and communication technologies, Gardiner surprised even herself.

“It ��. surreal to graduate with three bachelor's degrees,” she said. “What got me through it were the amazing people I've met at �� and the support I've had. Of course, I faced many long nights.”

Along with full credit loads or more each semester, Gardiner took summer and Winterm courses, and she tested out of several courses. She earned 154 credits, about 30 more than the average needed for one bachelor ��. degree, and made the Dean ��. List every year.

She came to �� originally for graphic communications, but she saw the opportunity to do more with her skills and interests. She also earned a minor in business administration.

“I was wanting more education on digital marketing as I started to learn the direction I wanted to take. That's what led me to add my second major,” she said.

“Testing out of courses allowed me to free up time to take additional courses I was interested in, including several photo studio classes and sign language. These are both areas that I was super passionate about, as I've always wanted to learn sign language and I have done photography for years.”

Gardiner credited the support and advice from Shaun Dudek, recently retired associate professor from the graphic communications program, for helping her succeed.

“Abi is an outstanding student with a great passion for learning and also for assisting others. She assisted in our labs and as a mentor with her work on campus,” Dudek said. “The GCOM coursework allows students to expand their educational focus by offering a grouping of credits that, if selected properly, could culminate into a minor degree. Abi selected to remain on campus an extra year to earn the extra credits not for the minors but to complete the two additional as majors.”

Gardiner worked in the GCOM labs her first and third years and also worked in University Housing as a hall manager — while continuing to operate a business she started in high school, Abi Jane Photography, in DeForest, near Madison.

“I also found an amazing group of people while working for University Housing, who have become lifelong friends,” she said.

That ��. not all. She received 10 scholarships and the Outstanding Co-op Student of the Year Award; was in Photo Club and the Academic Honors Society; and volunteered at the Dunn County Humane Society.

Gardiner graduated with honors.

With three degrees in hand, she has moved Abi Jane Photography to the Twin Cities and turned it into a full-time job. She does wedding and portrait photography, but she plans to do more, such as support and help educate other aspiring photographers and small business owners.

“I also do social media and marketing consulting with my business for other small businesses. This was not an easy decision and definitely scary, but I've had amazing support and I plan on utilizing what I've learned from my time at �� toward my business,” she said.

And that ��. a lot. “Marketing, management, business and project management, technology, website development, workflows, and more!” she said.

Marquardt is reaching her creative goals as she cares for her family

Angela Marquardt ��. family is her first priority. Her greatest joys are moments spent with her husband, Brandon, and their new child. But even in her joy, Marquardt felt something was missing. Last winter, while on furlough because of the pandemic, she did some soul-searching. She decided she wanted to go back to school.

Marquardt, of Schofield, has an associate degree in general arts and science. She began her undergraduate studies in graphic design at UW-Stevens Point. Then she switched to �� . online special education program.

When she and Brandon married, she left school to work full time as a paraprofessional at the DC Everest School District. She loved working with the students but wanted to do something related to her graphic design courses and have a career where she could be creative.

“I always went back and forth about going back to school because I knew it would be hard being married and having a family. When I decided to go back, I was pregnant,” Marquardt said. “My family is the most important part of my existence. But I realized I can still have passions outside of being a mom.”

Continuing her creative studies

Marquardt enrolled in �� . online digital marketing technology program. Having the flexibility of an online degree was important; she needed to be able to study when she had the time around her work and family schedule. The Customized Instruction option allowed her to do that.

“I loved going to school for graphic design but knew I would not be able to do in-person classes during the day with my job,” she said. “Digital marketing technology ties together what I already learned in graphic design but is designed for the future.”

Many of Marquardt ��. credits transferred to the online DMT program. She appreciates how understanding her professors are and how they take the time to understand her situation.

Program Director Kris Isaacson knows online learning can feel isolating sometimes, and she doesn’t always get to know her students as well as she’d like. But this wasn’t the case with Marquardt.

“Angela was very upfront with me about expecting her first baby when she enrolled in my course last fall. We worked together to devise a flexible schedule to keep her on track,” Isaacson said.

After her maternity leave, Marquardt returned to work in January as an appointment coordinator at Marshfield Clinic in Weston. She also started her online internship at Virtual Vision, a website design and marketing company in Wausau.

“It is honestly hard to balance family time, working full time, an internship and having a family. When taking on so much, it becomes more important to make every moment count,” she said. “My professors and peers are very supportive and encouraging. Some of them can even relate to my story. My story is actually pretty common these days.”

Isaacson estimates that the majority of Customized Instruction DMT students have families and are working adults because roughly 64% attend class part-time around their work schedules, have completed an associate degree or some bachelor's credits, and their average age is about 28-years old.

“Because many of the students in the CI program are transferring in credits, the average time to degree completion is two to three years. There are so many variables, such as how many credits they are transferring in and how many classes they take at a time,” she said.

Support and self-care

Marquardt doesn’t think she’d be able to go back to school if not for her family ��. support, knowing her schooling takes time away from family time.

“Their support means the world to me,” she said.

She understands her priorities and makes sure to stay positive when things are stressful, practicing her faith, meditation, exercise and painting as a creative outlet.

“I don’t think people take their spiritual, mental and physical well-being into consideration when they get tired, but that ��. when you need these things the most,” she said. “Taking care of myself helps me be the best mom and wife I can be.”

“Angela ��. motivation and focus on her future are part of what drives her to successfully juggle all that she has on her plate and why she will be successful,” Isaacson said.

Marquardt hopes to graduate in fall 2022 and start a career at Virtual Vision in digital marketing, while taking art and design workshops and market herself as a painter.

“It is never too late to conquer your dreams,” she said. “Your career choice does not need to be a decision based only on stability. Although stability is important, be sure to find something you are passionate about.”

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in earning your degree? It was very challenging raising a family and completing my program. There were many late nights until 3 a.m. completing assignments. Around midterms and finals, I wouldn’t see my kids for one to two weeks because my parents would be watching them so I could study.

What will you appreciate most about your �� experience? I’m an introvert and enjoyed the online program aspect and thought I didn’t need to engage. However, getting to know my professors in the program was so crucial in ensuring that I succeeded. They were my biggest supporters, who were more than willing to give me that pep talk or my resource for learning more about things outside of the course. It ��. really rewarding to be in my shoes and thinking back to my early 3 a.m. emails to my professors and getting responses from them at late hours as well. They shared parts of their lives with us, and that really broke down the barrier of intimidation.

What ��. next in your life? I know I want to be a digital marketing specialist but am open to being a social media specialist, SEO (search engine optimization) specialist or digital content coordinator. I currently work as an intern for Filene Research Institute as a graphic designer.

A Q&A with one of the 750 students who received a diploma Dec. 14 at ��:

Why did you choose ��? I chose �� for a few reasons. I have always been interested in Stout since my older brother graduated in 2008, and he only had great things to say about the academics and the professors. Another reason would be the obvious high employment rate for postgraduate students, which was extremely important to me when considering colleges. I also chose Stout because at the time they were one of the only colleges that offered a program for digital marketing technology, which really sold me because many companies are in need of digital marketing specialists.

What are the biggest obstacles you faced in earning your degree? One of my biggest obstacles was figuring out how to sell myself to companies. Gaining the confidence to talk to industry professionals was something that I had to acquire. I had a lot of practice by pushing myself to attend the Career Conference as early as my freshman year. I was not looking for an internship at the time, but I wanted to build my confidence by throwing myself into conversations with recruiters.

What stands out among your college experiences? One thing that really stands out would be the dedication of professors to ensure students succeed in their studies. I have been very impressed with every professor. Whenever I needed additional help, I could contact my professors and they would be there to assist me. They made themselves available often, and it was evident that they truly cared about the success of their students. Another thing that stands out for me was my internship experience at IDeaS Revenue Solutions (through the Career Conference). I will bring the knowledge gained at IDeaS into my career.

What ��. next? I have a few job offers that I am still considering, but I plan to be working as a digital marketing specialist in the Twin Cities area. I am extremely excited to finally start my professional career, and I am prepared for whatever lies ahead.

Artists from five foreign countries, four states submitted immersive digital art

In the digital age, art exhibits don’t have to be at physical locations and the art can be a 3D experience without being tangible.

That ��. the reality of Kevin W. Tharp ��. virtual reality-based art exhibit Virtually Tilted: An Exhibition of Tilt Brush Artistry. The artists created their submissions with Tilt Brush, a 3D painting tool by Google.

The University of Wisconsin-Stout professor said the exhibit may be the first of its kind. It drew artists from five foreign countries and four states.

Tilt Brush allows viewers using virtual reality technology to see art from all perspectives, as if the viewer was walking around the art in the center of a room or it was big enough to climb inside.

Tharp went one step further to make the art accessible without virtual reality.

“The submissions were created in virtual reality, but using the poly.google.com website I was able to embed the three-dimensional sketches in a web browser so they can be viewed by anyone. It even works on a cell phone,” Tharp said.

“When you see the sketches, you can use your mouse or touch screen to navigate around in the sketch with what we call six degrees of freedom. That means you can move on any axis, x, y or z, and look in 360 degrees from any location. It gives the ability for the person to explore throughout the sketch,” Tharp said.

“It allows you to break physics, like going through the thing you are looking at to see what is inside of it,” he added.

Tharp, an associate professor of digital marketing technology, conceived and coordinated the exhibit.

“Virtual Reality is creating a host of opportunities for creative expression. There was a need for a peer reviewed exhibition of this new form of art/communication,” Tharp said.

The submission categories ranged from novice to professional. Submissions were accepted in early October, and the winners were announced in mid-October. Of the 17 submissions, 14 were included in the exhibit, including one by Tharp, “The Beast Watches the Map.”

Awards, based on peer reviews, went to:

Of his submission, Karnchanapayap said it was “developed as a part of a doctoral thesis on how user immersion in virtual environment can enhance the audience ��. experience. The installation depicts the moment of Buddha ��. enlightenment as a room-scale experience, the Cube of Enlightenment.”

Tharp plans to feature some of the artists in an upcoming edition of the Digital Marketing Technology Research Journal, which is part of �� . digital marketing technology undergraduate program.

The project is an extension of Tharp ��. personal Perceptive Reality Project, or virtual reality research.

Experience abroad gave Fawcett new perspectives, renewed enthusiasm for her education

A year and a half into college, Abigail “Abby” Fawcett wasn’t sure what she wanted to do for a career. She had tried two majors and was switching to a third one. She wasn’t even sure if she wanted to stay at University of Wisconsin-Stout.

She was searching. Then, one day, one of her mom ��. college friends mentioned enjoying something called the Wisconsin in Scotland program. “Was it still around?” Fawcett wondered?

It was. After learning more through �� . Office of International Education and deciding it might be right for her, Fawcett left for Scotland for the spring of 2017. Turns out, something 3,700 miles away was exactly what she needed.

“I needed to take a step back and figure out who I was. The Scotland experience really changed me as an individual,” said Fawcett, of Eau Claire.

Fast forward two years, and Fawcett continues to reap dividends from her decision to study abroad. In May, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in digital marketing technology — the third major she had switched to in the middle of her sophomore year. This summer she is interning in Eagan, Minn., at the international mass media firm Thomson Reuters.

“In the digital marketing technology field things are constantly changing. Every day I am learning something new, and I like that it keeps me on my toes. I am able to drive decisions based upon the data that I get,” she said.

How did studying in Scotland change Fawcett? She took classes with other students from the UW System and around the country taught by professors from the UW System and the United Kingdom. The program is hosted at Dalkeith House, an 18th century castle in Dalkeith, six miles from Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.

Between a host mom at Dalkeith who mentored Fawcett on the culture, taking intercultural courses and taking advantage of opportunities to travel in Scotland and other countries, Fawcett returned home a changed person.

“I was able to see things from different perspectives. I had the confidence, and my communication skills had been enriched. I wanted to be more involved. That ��. when I fell in love with ��,” Fawcett said.

Fawcett said that meeting a new friend, Molly Deering of UW-River Falls, helped her make the most of the Scotland program. “Molly helped push me out of my comfort zone and encouraged me to take advantage of the program, get out of the palace and go on an adventure,” Fawcett said, noting that classes weren’t held on Fridays, leaving open the opportunity to travel to nearby countries, such as England and France.

She also soon fell in love with her new digital marketing technology major and, with her new-found confidence, became more involved on campus. “I had a breath of fresh air,” she said.

Andria Morse, interim assistant director of study abroad at ��, said Fawcett “used her study abroad experience to gain another perspective of the world and to take the time to think about and focus on what she wanted to do for her future.”

On campus, she took a part-time job in the Office of International Education after an adviser in Scotland, seeing Fawcett ��. growth, recommended her for the position. She also worked part time in the office for her program.

In 2018, she landed a university coordinated co-op position at Great River Energy in Maple Grove, Minn. She excelled there too — one of 18 students in May at �� to receive an Outstanding Co-op Student of the Year Award.

She studied abroad again, with short-term experiences in Belize and Germany in her junior and senior years.

Wisconsin in Scotland

�� students and faculty and others from around the UW System have taken and taught courses at Dalkeith House since the program began in 1986.

This summer, eight students are there and in the fall another seven will go. Professor Cynthia Bland is teaching two courses there this summer, and instructor Emily Beck will teach there in the fall.

“The Wisconsin in Scotland program has a strong living-learning community developed by Patty Watters, residence director, that focuses on confidence, competence and independence,” Morse said.

The program is scheduled to expand in 2020 with a precollege experience, allowing first-year students to take classes there the summer before beginning their university careers.

Overall, close to 300 �� students study abroad each year, benefiting in many ways from their experiences, Morse said.

“Research by the Institute of International Education shows that studying abroad has long-term impacts on students’ career progression, promotion and job offers,” she said, including soft skills such as intercultural communications, adaptability, problem-solving, confidence and team-building.
