It is a way for computers to think, learn and act just like humans. As the term 鈥渁rtificial鈥 suggests, this form of intelligence is created by humans. 鈥淢achine learning is a way we make computers intelligent and capable of performing such tasks without explicitly teaching them how to do so. It does this by identifying patterns in data,鈥 he said.</span></p><p><span>鈥淥ne aspect of my work involves&nbsp;robot path planning in Robotic Compact Storage and Retrieval Systems (RCSRS), where I use&nbsp;reinforcement learning and advanced optimization algorithms&nbsp;to improve retrieval efficiency and scheduling, helping robotic systems make faster and more adaptive decisions in dynamic environments,鈥 Twumasi said.</span></p><p><span>Another major focus of his research is&nbsp;laser scan path design in Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF)&nbsp;additive manufacturing. 鈥淚n this research, I apply&nbsp;deep reinforcement learning and physics-guided machine learning&nbsp;to design toolpaths that&nbsp;control microstructure evolution,&nbsp;to enhance the mechanical performance of printed parts,鈥 he said.</span></p><p><span>RCSRS are widely used in the logistics, e-commerce, manufacturing, and warehousing industries, particularly in automated fulfillment centers, pharmaceutical inventory systems, grocery distribution and retail supply chains. The systems help optimize storage density, retrieval speed and operational efficiency.</span></p><p><span>L-PBF technology is central to aerospace, automotive, biomedical, and defense industries, where it is used to produce lightweight, high-strength metal components with complex geometries. It 黑料社区. also increasingly applied in energy, tooling and custom medical implants because of its precision ability.</span></p><p><span>Twumasi 黑料社区. current and upcoming projects also explore&nbsp;scientific machine learning, uncertainty quantification, and AI-driven modeling&nbsp;for smart manufacturing and logistics optimization. AI research and teaching intersect around&nbsp;GenAI and its practical implementation in higher education and business technology.&nbsp;She has developed and is currently teaching a professional development course,&nbsp;AI Implementation Strategy, where students design organizational AI strategies aligned to NIST, IBM, and McKinsey frameworks. Would they feel a stronger sense of ownership of their writing versus AI-generated poetry?</span></p></div> </div> </div> </section> <section class="section content-text"> <div class="container"> <div class="l-content--main"> <figure class="content-image__figure--v-largeright"> <div> <img class="image-style-uws-medium-vertical-480-640-" src="/sites/default/files/styles/uws_medium_vertical_480_640_/public/2025-10/Justin%20Nicholes.jpg?itok=eesB-cIW" alt="Justin Nicholes" alt="icon" /> </div> </figure> <div> <p><span>鈥淲ith each passing semester and academic year, students鈥 attitudes and experiences with generative AI change,鈥 Nicholes said. 鈥淥ne surprising result from my research into asking students to write with and without AI through poetry, and about autobiographical moments, is that students increasingly see GenAI as a tool that enhances their personal meaning-making. It is not enough to simply dismiss GenAI writing as a form of cheating. While some will refuse GenAI, especially for personal and creative expression, there is a role, and we need to keep trying to understand how students see GenAI tools and the writing they produce with and without it.鈥</span></p><p><span>For his research, Nicholes recruited 88 first-year students, who composed brief poems about meaningful or challenging life experiences, such as loss, pain, anger, disappointment or defeat. They then prompted a GenAI program, such as ChatGPT or Gemini, to compose a poem about that same event.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>The students wrote poems that were more narrative, authentic, unguarded and emotionally negative in tone than the GenAI poems.</span></p><p><span>Following their writing, the students completed surveys to record their perceptions of their own poems and GenAI poems, based on ownership, accuracy and aesthetic merit. Ownership referred to whether the writing reflected an important part of the writers鈥 selves. Accuracy referred to whether the poem reflected their thoughts and feelings. Aesthetic merit referred to the quality of the writing, with features such as vivid imagery, a feeling of completeness, rhyme, meter, structure and form.</span></p></div> </div> </div> </section> <section class="section section-pad--bottom content-image"> <div class="container"> <div class="l-content--main"> <figure class="content-image__figure"> <div> <img class="image-style-large" src="/sites/default/files/styles/large/public/2025-10/Students%20in%20a%20composition%20course.jpg?itok=0lECp96E" alt="Students writing in a composition course" alt="icon" /> </div> </figure> </div> </div> </section> <section class="section section-pad--bottom content-text" 230590> <div class="container"> <div class="l-content--main"> <div> <p><span>Finally, the students were asked which poem they preferred and why.</span></p><p><span>Nicholes鈥 findings showed that the students fairly evenly preferred their poems to the GenAI poems: 42% preferred their poems because of the personal connections to the events; 50% preferred the GenAI poems, mainly for their textual features; and 8% preferred both.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Students felt significantly greater ownership of and accuracy in their human-written poems. And while students rated aesthetic merit higher for GenAI poems, which portrayed greater imagery, language, and form, they felt the GenAI poems lacked originality.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淚n terms of implications for teaching writing, meaningful literacy remains a valuable college-writing experience whereby college writers in various writing contexts have chances to create work they view as important parts of themselves, work they see as importantly conveying their life experiences and voices, and work that they see as unique contributions,鈥 Nicholes said. 鈥淲hile GenAI may be used as a tool to assist in autobiographical, meaningful writing, and although it has the potential for assisting writers in ways similar to peer review processes, human creativity is a unique territory worth In talking with marketing professionals, I am able to keep up in conversations that rely heavily on abbreviations, industry standards and widely used practices.</span></p><p><span><strong>How did your involvement on campus impact your experience?</strong></span></p><p><span>Ever since my first semester at Stout I have been involved on campus.&nbsp;As a very sentimental person, the hardest part of saying goodbye to these clubs is going to be the people.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>I have been a part of the Chamber Choir for my entire college career. The choir is where I attribute finding my friend group and where I truly belong. I got to go on a concert tour with them in Puerto Rico, sing at other gigs and participate in our biannual concerts. Though they both graduated last year, I still sometimes find myself messaging them to ask for advice or to catch up. The DMT program is quite small, so having peers that I was close to in the major was a game changer for me. They offered me advice, support, and above all, they offered me another place to belong.</span></p><p><span>I served on University Housing 黑料社区. Hall Leadership Committee, creating events like Mental Maintenance to give students a calm environment during finals where they could meditate and take home a self-care goodie bag.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>I then became a resident adviser for the Out at Stout residence hall living community and a hall manager. It sounds cheesy, but I have known I was going to be an RA since I was 9 years old seeing my sister as an RA at her school. I want to see others succeed, and I believe I have a knack for helping them find their inner strength to do so. My RAs were the most important people to me, not just as employees but also as students and people.</span></p><p><span>People ask me why I joined Housing, and my answer is always that I wanted to be a mentor to students and a person that people feel like they can come to. I am grateful to have this knowledge at the start of my career.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><span><span><span>Focusing on creative careers</span></span></span></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Granger chose the DMT degree because of its mix of creativity and technology. 鈥淚 am able to use my creativity on projects like social media, web design and marketing; and my technology skills on projects like search engine optimization, coding and web programming,鈥 she said.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>She graduated on May 6 and is looking for a career where she can contribute to the success of an organization and continue to learn and grow in the industry.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淚 valued the willingness of professors to guide me along the way and pass along their industry knowledge. This allowed me to narrow in on not only what I enjoyed, but what I excelled in,鈥 she added.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Falkavage will graduate in May 2024 and</span></span></span></span><span><span> wants to go into freelance video production and editing. </span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淚 have always wanted to do creative work. I am inspired by filmmakers and videographers who are able to make people feel real emotions and show them new perspectives through video. He earned his double major on May 6, one of 1,173 graduates.</span></p><p><span><strong>What stands out about your 黑料社区 experience?</strong></span></p><p><span>My six-month web development internship at Colony Brands was a great learning experience, from discovering what I like and don鈥檛 like, to learning about other career paths. This internship was outstanding because I got exposed to other teams within the digital marketing department, including web merchandising, data analytics and business analysis.</span></p><blockquote><p><span>As a web development intern, I put my hands-on learning from web development classes at Stout to the test by updating consumer websites.</span></p></blockquote><p><span>One other standout for me was the professors鈥 approachability and personability. They were always accessible, communicative and supporting through easy or hard projects. I remember trying to get a page to have two columns; getting the CSS style tags correct to reflect properly on the website; and finally making my first website as the class ended.</span></p><p><span>Because of this class, I took more web development classes and I now love using HTML and CSS to create websites. I like it so much that I create my own websites, ranging from study abroad and trip reflections to using websites to showcase work for other classes, including Photography and Graphic Communications. This challenge has shown me how much I like web development.</span></p><p><span><strong>How did your involvement at 黑料社区 impact your experience?</strong></span></p><p><span>I am proud of the variety of involvement I鈥檝e had on campus. I have held several different on-campus job positions. I started as a student manager in </span><a href="/life-stout/dining" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span>University Dining</span></a><span>, overseeing the cafeteria operations and helping in all areas. I worked at Week One Orientation twice, helping freshmen transition to campus and taking them to campus events. I also worked in the First-Year </span><a href="/academics/academic-resources/advisement" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span>Advisement Center</span></a><span> as a receptionist, interacting with students and helping advisers as needed. And I was a campus tour guide with the </span><a href="/directory/admissions-office" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span>Admissions Office</span></a><span>, showing prospective students and families the Stout campus and connecting their interests with opportunities here. For spring break my junior year, I went to Brookings, S.D., to do electrical wiring; and Acton, Mass., my senior year to do insulation and drywall. These were very fun and rewarding experiences to help build homes for families. Of course, I faced many long nights.鈥</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Along with full credit loads or more each semester, Gardiner took summer and Winterm courses, and she tested out of several courses. She earned 154 credits, about 30 more than the average needed for one bachelor 黑料社区. degree, and made the Dean 黑料社区. List every year.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>She came to 黑料社区 originally for graphic communications, but she saw the opportunity to do more with her skills and interests. She also earned a minor in business administration.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淚 was wanting more education on digital marketing as I started to learn the direction I wanted to take. That's what led me to add my second major,鈥 she said.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淭esting out of courses allowed me to free up time to take additional courses I was interested in, including several photo studio classes and sign language. She assisted in our labs and as a mentor with her work on campus,鈥 Dudek said. 鈥淭he GCOM coursework allows students to expand their educational focus by offering a grouping of credits that, if selected properly, could culminate into a minor degree. Abi selected to remain on campus an extra year to earn the extra credits not for the minors but to complete the two additional as majors.鈥</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Gardiner worked in the GCOM labs her first and third years and also worked in University Housing as a hall manager 鈥 while continuing to operate a business she started in high school, </span></span><a href="https://abijanephoto.com"><span>Abi Jane Photography</span></a><span><span>, in DeForest, near Madison.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淚 also found an amazing group of people while working for University Housing, who have become lifelong friends,鈥 she said.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>That 黑料社区. not all. She received 10 scholarships and the Outstanding Co-op Student of the Year Award; was in Photo Club and the Academic Honors Society; and volunteered at the Dunn County Humane Society.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Gardiner graduated with honors.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>With three degrees in hand, she has moved Abi Jane Photography to the Twin Cities and turned it into a full-time job. She does wedding and portrait photography, but she plans to do more, such as support and help educate other aspiring photographers and small business owners.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淚 also do social media and marketing consulting with my business for other small businesses. Having the flexibility of an online degree was important; she needed to be able to study when she had the time around her work and family schedule. The </span></span></span><span><span><span>Customized Instruction option allowed her to do that.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淚 loved going to school for graphic design but knew I would not be able to do in-person classes during the day with my job,鈥 she said. 鈥淒igital marketing technology ties together what I already learned in graphic design but is designed for the future.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Many of Marquardt 黑料社区. credits transferred to the online DMT program. She appreciates how understanding her professors are and how they take the time to understand her situation. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>Program Director Kris Isaacson knows online learning can feel isolating sometimes, and she doesn鈥檛 always get to know her students as well as she鈥檇 like. We worked together to devise a flexible schedule to keep her on track,鈥 Isaacson said. </span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>After her maternity leave, Marquardt returned to work in January as an appointment coordinator at Marshfield Clinic in Weston. She also started her online internship at Virtual Vision, a website design and marketing company in Wausau.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淚t is honestly hard to balance family time, working full time, an internship and having a family. When taking on so much, it becomes more important to make every moment count,鈥 she said. 鈥淢y professors and peers are very supportive and encouraging. Some of them can even relate to my story. My story is actually pretty common these days.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>Isaacson estimates that the majority of Customized Instruction DMT students have families and are working adults because roughly 64% attend class part-time around their work schedules, have completed an associate degree or some bachelor's credits, and their average age is about 28-years old.<br> <br> 鈥淏ecause many of the students in the CI program are transferring in credits, the average time to degree completion is two to three years. I have always been interested in Stout since my older brother graduated in 2008, and he only had great things to say about the academics and the professors. Another reason would be the obvious high employment rate for postgraduate students, which was extremely important to me when considering colleges. I also chose Stout because at the time they were one of the only colleges that offered a program for digital marketing technology, which really sold me because many companies are in need of digital marketing specialists.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span>What are the biggest obstacles you faced in earning your degree? </span></span></span></strong><span><span><span>One of my biggest obstacles was figuring out how to sell myself to companies. Gaining the confidence to talk to industry professionals was something that I had to acquire. I had a lot of practice by pushing myself to attend the Career Conference as early as my freshman year. I was not looking for an internship at the time, but I wanted to build my confidence by throwing myself into conversations with recruiters.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><strong><span><span><span>What stands out among your college experiences?</span></span></span></strong><span><span><span> One thing that really stands out would be the dedication of professors to ensure students succeed in their studies. I have been very impressed with every professor. Whenever I needed additional help, I could contact my professors and they would be there to assist me. They made themselves available often, and it was evident that they truly cared about the success of their students. Another thing that stands out for me was my internship experience at IDeaS Revenue Solutions (through the Career Conference). It drew artists from five foreign countries and four states.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Tilt Brush allows viewers using virtual reality technology to see art from all perspectives, as if the viewer was walking around the art in the center of a room or it was big enough to climb inside.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>Tharp went one step further to make the art accessible without virtual reality.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淭he submissions were created in virtual reality, but using the </span></span></span><span><a href="https://poly.google.com/"><span><span>poly.google.com website</span></span></a></span><span><span><span> I was able to embed the three-dimensional sketches in a web browser so they can be viewed by anyone. She had tried two majors and was switching to a third one. She wasn鈥檛 even sure if she wanted to stay at University of Wisconsin-Stout.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>She was searching. Then, one day, one of her mom 黑料社区. college friends mentioned enjoying something called the <a href="https://www.uwrf.edu/WisconsinInScotland/">Wisconsin in Scotland</a> program. 鈥淲as it still around?鈥 Fawcett wondered? </span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>It was. After learning more through 黑料社区 黑料社区. <a href="/academics/office-international-education">Office of International Education</a> and deciding it might be right for her, Fawcett left for Scotland for the spring of 2017. Turns out, something 3,700 miles away was exactly what she needed.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><img alt="Abby Fawcett said studying at Scotland 黑料社区. Dalkeith House, background, and studying abroad 鈥渃hanged me as an individual.鈥" data-entity-type="file" data-entity-uuid="c981727f-8075-4010-ab90-9465a3e8a0c7" src="/sites/default/files/inline-images/fawcett%2Cabby_scotland1a.jpg" style="padding:0px 30px 20px 0px" class="align-left" width="500" height="625">鈥淚 needed to take a step back and figure out who I was. The Scotland experience really changed me as an individual,鈥 said Fawcett, of Eau Claire.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Fast forward two years, and Fawcett continues to reap dividends from her decision to study abroad. In May, she graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in <a href="/programs/bs-digital-marketing-technology">digital marketing technology</a> 鈥 the third major she had switched to in the middle of her sophomore year. This summer she <span>is interning in Eagan, Minn., at the international mass media firm Thomson Reuters.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>鈥淚n the digital marketing technology field things are constantly changing. Every day I am learning something new, and I like that it keeps me on my toes. I am able to drive decisions based upon the data that I get,鈥 she said.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>How did studying in Scotland change Fawcett? She took classes with other students from the UW System and around the country taught by professors from the UW System and the United Kingdom. The program is hosted at Dalkeith House, an 18th century castle in Dalkeith, six miles from Edinburgh, the capital of Scotland.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Between a host mom at Dalkeith who mentored Fawcett on the culture, taking intercultural courses and taking advantage of opportunities to travel in Scotland and other countries, Fawcett returned home a changed person.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥<span>I was able to see things from different perspectives. I had the confidence, and my communication skills had been enriched. I wanted to be more involved. She also worked part time in the office for her program.</span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span>In 2018, she landed a university coordinated co-op position at <a href="https://greatriverenergy.com/">Great River Energy</a> in Maple Grove, Minn. Professor Cynthia Bland is teaching two courses there this summer, and instructor Emily Beck will teach there in the fall.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淭he Wisconsin in Scotland program has a strong living-learning community developed by Patty Watters, residence director, that focuses on confidence, competence and independence,鈥 Morse said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>The program is scheduled to expand in 2020 with a precollege experience, allowing first-year students to take classes there the summer before beginning their university careers.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>Overall, close to 300 黑料社区 students study abroad each year, benefiting in many ways from their experiences, Morse said.</span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span>鈥淩esearch by the Institute of International Education shows that studying abroad has long-term impacts on students鈥 career progression, promotion and job offers,鈥 she said, including soft skills such as intercultural communications, adaptability, problem-solving, confidence and team-building.</span> </span></span></p> <p><span><span><em><span>###</span></em></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Photos</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Abby Fawcett said studying at Scotland 黑料社区.
