Their public installations celebrate how art brings communities together, creating vibrant and welcoming spaces.</span></p><p><span>Seanor, an&nbsp;</span><a href="/programs/bs-art-education" target="_blank"><span>art education major</span></a><span> from Wausau, studied abroad at Accademia Italiana in Florence, Italy, last spring. When shops along Via Palazzuolo close their shutters for the evening, the street turns into an art gallery. The street, close to Santa Maria Novella Square, is seeking to&nbsp;revive its historical artisan character&nbsp;and support the local economy.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Seanor 黑料社区. mural reflects on the impact of mass tourism on Florence, as seen through the eyes of an American student.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淚t is a message of unity and shared respect, a reminder to travelers that to truly experience a place you must appreciate it, learn from it, connect with it, reflect on it and understand it,鈥 Seanor said.</span></p><p><span>It is also a message to Florentines, acknowledging the challenges that tourism can bring, while offering a heartfelt reassurance: 鈥淢any of us arrive with a deep admiration for this extraordinary city and a genuine desire to honor its culture, its people and its rhythms. In Florence, we can meet not as strangers, but as human beings moved by beauty, history and respect,鈥 Seanor added.</span></p><p><span>At the heart of the painting is a portrait of Seanor 黑料社区. Italian teacher, Maria Antonietta, who motivated Seanor to do her best inside and outside of class. 鈥淢aria was my inspiration. She is a world traveler and beautiful soul, and she symbolizes the desire to learn no matter where you go,鈥 she said.</span></p><p><span>She was&nbsp;also influenced by her own observations of the city. 鈥淥thers might say it 黑料社区. bold to comment on tourism within art, when you yourself are an American. However, my goal was to hopefully close the gap between tourists and locals in Florence,鈥 Seanor said.</span></p><p><span>鈥淚鈥檓 very happy with the results of this mural, with how colorful it is and how it&nbsp;turned out physically, but also with how it changed me as a person,鈥 she added. 鈥淚 believe this mural and studying abroad have helped me really push myself to try to achieve more, and that is something&nbsp;I am really proud of. I combined the ideas in an almost abstract way to create a collage of hidden things. I added a lot of motion and fluidity into the design, making it engaging for kids at the office to look at,鈥 she said.</span></p><p><span>McDowell had always wanted to learn about the process behind creating a mural, and two courses at 黑料社区 provided her with that knowledge. Within the&nbsp;Digital Illustration course, McDowell worked with a group of her peers to create a mural design for 黑料社区 黑料社区. </span><a href="/academics/colleges-schools/school-art-design" target="_blank"><span>School of Art and Design</span></a><span>. It portrayed humanoid characters interacting with elements of art and design 鈥 film, ceramics, video games, music, studio art and more 鈥 in purple, blue, orange, yellow and red hues.</span></p><p><span>Their design was chosen by university leadership to be completed by students in the Graffiti and Street Art summer class in 2024. McDowell enrolled in the class and helped bring her design to life, led by <strong>Professor&nbsp;Cynthia Bland</strong>&nbsp;and <strong>Lecturer&nbsp;Wade Lambrigtsen</strong>, owner and proprietor of&nbsp;</span><a href="https://www.vintagesignshop.com/" target="_blank"><span>Vintage Sign Shop</span></a><span>&nbsp;in Menomonie. These courses allowed me to get experience outside of school, and I was able to use these skills to further my career and find a new passion,鈥 she said.</span></p><p><span>鈥淢egan 黑料社区. Koala mural is a clear connective thread between the mural production here at Stout and setting up students to become muralists out in the real world,鈥 Bland added.</span></p><p><span>McDowell graduated this spring and is currently&nbsp;doing freelance work while seeking a full-time career. She wants to continue painting murals as well. 鈥淲hat I love most about animation and digital media is the storytelling. Storytelling through visuals is something I greatly enjoy. I want to bring other people 黑料社区. stories to life,鈥 she said.</span></p><p><span>In summer 2026,&nbsp;</span><a href="https://exploremenomonie.com/murals-in-menomonie/" target="_blank"><span>Murals in Menomonie</span></a><span>, featuring the&nbsp;Walldogs, will transform and uplift the community through public art, helping make Menomonie a more joyful and vibrant place to live.</span></p><p><span>The animation and digital media program is part of the&nbsp;</span><a href="/academics/colleges-schools/college-arts-human-sciences/school-art-design/furlong-gallery" target="_blank"><span>School of Art and Design</span></a><span>, one of the largest public art schools in the Midwest. Of the 116 licensed group child care centers in the 10-county area, 70% responded to the survey.</span></p><p><span>They reported having to adjust their capacity because of a shortage of qualified staff. And although the group centers reported hiring almost 600 times in the last 12 months, there are still more than 300 staff positions open. In addition to adjusted capacity, more than 50 classrooms closed, resulting in a loss of more than 1,600 child care slots.</span></p><p><span>In these counties, waiting lists for families outweigh availability, with 90% of programs reporting a waiting list of more than 4,000 children. And across the state, three or more children compete for every available child care spot, with 54% of Wisconsin residents living in child care deserts.</span></p><p><span>Without support around the child care staffing crisis, 16% of CCP group child care programs reported they were facing closure due to the ongoing issue of not having qualified staff.</span></p><p><span>As part of Gov. Evers proposed 2023-25 budget, $340 million would be invested in the Child Care Counts: COVID-19 Stabilization Payment Program, along with $22 million to support the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families鈥 Partner Up! By staying abreast of current research and developments in the field of early childhood education, they mentor future educators who are prepared to enter the workforce.鈥</span></p><p><span>This year, 63 children of university students, faculty, staff and community members are in CFSC programming. She works one-on-one with children ages 2 and older, who are on the autism spectrum. Using applied behavior analysis, Hewitt guides children to understand their abilities to their best advantage, so that they may have the most independent life they can.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淢y education from Stout has given me the best tools to excel in my position,鈥 Hewitt said. 鈥淚 use individualization and differentiation every single day. I also utilize the training I received at Stout to create plans for programming, thinking outside the box for creatively presenting new learning objectives while aiming for the most multimodal experience for the child. As emerging professional counselors, our students will educate parents and caregivers on how to support children in the midst of normal development, but also those experiencing developmental crises,鈥 Bates-Maves said.</span></p><p><span>This spring semester, <strong>Assistant Professor Lindsay Heidelberger</strong>, program director of M.S. nutrition and dietetics, has connected <strong>Professor Deb Sheats</strong> to collaborate with CFSC staff to provide master's students in the Nutrition Education and Counseling course with hands-on, polytechnic learning. Students will observe meal times at the CFSC, conduct needs assessments with staff and create nutrition education video lessons for children and their families.</span></p><p><span>鈥淗aving access to Students in the School of Education's B.S. Early Childhood Education program provide childcare for children ages 0-3. The value of graduates from 黑料社区's education programs has never been greater for Wisconsin schools.</p> <p><span><span><span><span>University students led much of Teach Day, with support from program directors. I wouldn鈥檛 have explored it if it weren鈥檛 for my teacher Mr. Peterson. I want to help other students explore and excel in technology,鈥 Whited said.</span></p><p><span>High school students learned how to write a lesson plan, which they could take back to their schools and use to teach a class. They also toured campus and met with university students during lunch to talk more about their programs of interest.</span></p><h3><span>Event responds to growing need for teachers</span></h3><p><span>Last year 黑料社区. </span><a href="/about-us/news-center/teach-day-encourages-high-school-students-explore-teaching-career" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><span>pilot program</span></a><span> focused on family and consumer sciences education; marketing and business education; and technology education. FCCLA and her family and consumer sciences teacher helped her learn that she loves to teach.</span></p><p><span>鈥淚 love this event because I get to share my passion for teaching, and I get to teach other people about my major and 黑料社区. This event gives people the opportunity to explore teaching in an interactive way,鈥 Korte said.</span></p><p><span>Technology education majors <strong>Sam Konieczny</strong> and <strong>Ben Schmitt</strong> also volunteer during Teach Day. Their high school technology education teachers were influential in their decisions to teach.</span></p><p><span>Schmitt assisted his teacher in high school, working with his classmates and stepping up into a leadership role. 鈥淚 hope my involvement with Teach Day gives high school students that opportunity to experience teaching for a day and gain clarity about a path to teaching through 黑料社区,鈥 he said.</span></p><p><span>鈥淭each Day gives high school students who are looking at a career in education a chance to see the other side of the desk and what Stout has to offer them,鈥 Konieczny added.</span></p><p><span>Konieczny believes education is one of the most rewarding careers. 鈥淚t is the best thing to be working with someone and watch what they weren鈥檛 understanding click and make sense. She plans to teach in central Wisconsin. Konieczny and Schmitt plan to student teach in fall 2023 and graduate that semester. Schmitt, of Somerset, would like to teach in western Wisconsin.</span></p><p><span>Konieczny, from Oak Creek, a Milwaukee suburb, would like to 鈥済o back to the Milwaukee area and give back to the community that helped me get to where I am today,鈥 he said. 鈥淲hen I look back at some of the people who made the biggest difference in my life, it was my teachers. It seemed like an uphill battle every step of the way, but it's finally here,鈥 he said.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥榃here life wanted to take me鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>In high school, Springsteen knew he wanted to study either graphic design or art education, but he was torn between them. He asked his art teacher, who鈥檇 previously been a graphic designer, for advice on what he should do and she thought he鈥檇 do well in either field. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>He enjoyed working with kids, having served for several years at a summer camp and as a teacher 黑料社区. aide in his art classes.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淚 took a big leap and last minute decided to go into art education,鈥 said Springsteen, of Cumberland. 鈥淭o me, it was the best idea because it 黑料社区. the best of both worlds. I get to work with kids and help them grow. And I still get to do art, like printmaking with my minor.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>黑料社区 was the only college Springsteen applied to. His mom, Heidi, graduated in 1989 with a degree in <a href="/programs/bs-business-administration" rel="noopener" target="_blank">business administration</a>, and both of his art teachers are alums. So, to me, it just made sense to attend Stout.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥楢 dedicated person and teacher鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Springsteen 黑料社区. challenges began in his sophomore year, when he made his biggest mistake of not putting in the effort, he said. He was having negative family issues and seasonal depression. He avoided his friends and stopped attending campus activities. His grades slipped, and in the spring his grade point average was .004 away from academic suspension. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淪eeing my GPA that low really woke me up,鈥 he said. 鈥淔or the next five years, I worked hard.鈥 </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>In an effort to boost his GPA, Springsteen retook a year 黑料社区. worth of classes, along with Winterm classes. But even after that, his GPA was still low, too low in fact to begin his student teaching. So, he took extra art classes, adding on his studio art minor. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淎rt always came easy to me, so it was something that made sense,鈥 he said. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>At the start of last summer, Springsteen 黑料社区. GPA was still .04 away from being able to student teach. So, he took two summer courses, and with two weeks left before the 2021-22 academic year, he entered his paperwork and began student teaching this fall. </span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淚 won鈥檛 lie; I wanted to drop out more than once, but I knew I鈥檇 regret it,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 was so invested and so close to being done with school, so I kept pushing forward.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淭here were a lot of bitter moments, but I believe these challenges made me a better and more dedicated person and teacher.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>What Springsteen enjoyed most about the art ed program was the faculty. Even if it wasn鈥檛 school related, I knew I could talk to them. They both taught me a lot.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Oberding believes Springsteen</span></span></span></span><span><span><span><span> has shown fortitude and patience through his challenges, both personally and professionally. She admires his perseverance and compassion.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淛ames remained steadfast in his conviction to become an art teacher. His compassion is evident,鈥 she said.&nbsp;鈥淥ur schools need teachers who are compassionate and persevere through adversity.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <h3><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Teaching experiences in art</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></h3> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>Springsteen led classes for </span></span></span><span><a href="http://www.artsintegrationmenomonie.org/" rel="noopener" target="_blank"><span><span>Arts Integration Menomonie</span></span></a></span><span><span><span> for a semester, teaching community members about different artists, painting methods and how to mix color.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>He completed his student teaching in Clear Lake, at the elementary, middle and high school levels. While many education students have student teaching experiences in two or more school districts, he 黑料社区. enjoyed staying in one district. And he likes the rural school and small class sizes.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淚鈥檝e really gotten to know the kids well, and it gave me a chance to get to know the staff,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 really enjoy working with high school students and would like to teach at that level. They鈥檙e more independent, and I can challenge them to push themselves more.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>His experiences with classroom management, teaching methods and new mediums have prepared him for his own classroom. He 黑料社区. been offered a substitute position with Clear Lake, as he seeks a full-time teaching position.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淪tout has helped me improve my skills in the art field all around. I can apply my education from art classes and education classes to my own classes in the future,鈥 he said. <span>鈥</span>I feel very prepared to teach. We discussed gradients, tints, shades and tones.鈥</span></p><p><span>Bonlander then led the class through creating a painting and a step-by-step landscape using the art techniques. 鈥淚 chose this project so that students could 100% feel successful in and confident with their ability to use acrylic paint. The landscape was a huge success and proved that the vocabulary we covered can be used in their future projects.鈥</span></p><p><span>As a health teacher, Duex 黑料社区. main goal is to help students live a healthy life physically, socially and emotionally. She participated in the camp because she wanted to assist future educators with effective classroom management skills, she said.</span></p><p><span>鈥淚 also wanted to learn from the artist, so I can incorporate art into my health classroom,鈥 she added.&nbsp;鈥淲orking with Olivia was an enjoyable experience because we both brought different strengths to the classroom, and we were able to learn from each other. For the remainder of the spring semester, Bandli and Bonlander needed to prepare virtual classes. They created prerecorded lessons, which they posted on AIM 黑料社区. We realized we were not going to get to see the kids interact in the artmaking process, which was such a huge part of why CAC was amazing,鈥 Bonlander said. </span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>For the 2020-21 school year, they proposed a synchronous virtual option to art education Program Director Ann Oberding and </span></span></span><span><span><span>Assistant Professor Tami Weiss, executive director of AIM.<span> Classes met virtually in Microsoft Teams, with 15 to 20 children attending each week. Bandli and Bonlander coordinated the pick-up of free art kits for registrants at the beginning of each semester.</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Children were instructed on how to create collages, acrylic paintings, drawings and other projects following a theme. This year 黑料社区. theme was Artists of the Past, Present and Future, which focused on historical and contemporary artists. The class has been a great outlet for her to collaborate with other kids who also enjoy art,鈥 Olson said.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Bandli and Bonlander stress that the children are the artists of the future and included artistic choices for them to express themselves. Seeing them feel comfortable and starting conversations with children always makes my heart warm,鈥 she said. 鈥淭he relationships that I have built with students over the past two years is the exact reason why I want to be a teacher.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span>Bailey Iwen </span></span></span><span><span>is the incoming CAC coordinator. I think that says a lot about PAINT.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>When Bandli entered the art education program, she was inspired by the amazing things the PAINT interns were doing and knew she wanted to make an impact as a leader in the program.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>鈥淢y internships increased my confidence and competence as a preservice teacher. I practiced mindfulness and made friendships and connections with the community that made me a happier student and reaffirmed my commitment to teaching,鈥 Bandli said. 鈥淚 know that Olivia and I will continue to support each other as we enter the teaching profession.鈥</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Bandli will student teach this fall and graduate in December. She hopes to teach at an elementary school and remain involved with the AIM grant as an alum. 鈥淚 hope to visit and give back to a college program that has taught me so much,鈥 she said.</span></span></span></span></span></span></p> <p><span><span><span><span><span><span>Bonlander will graduate in spring 2022.
