Art installations in Italy, Minnesota bring communities together

Two �� students – Allison Seanor and Megan McDowell – recently completed two murals, half a world apart. Their public installations celebrate how art brings communities together, creating vibrant and welcoming spaces.

Seanor, an art education major from Wausau, studied abroad at Accademia Italiana in Florence, Italy, last spring. She participated in a city-wide mural festival with her artwork entitled “To Travel is to Understand.”

McDowell, an animation and digital media major from Albertville, Minnesota, was commissioned by Koala Dental Care in St. Cloud, to create a multi-wall-to-wall mural for the office ��. reception area.

‘To Travel is to Understand’

Seanor ��. mural “To Travel is to Understand” is part of Florence ��. annual Palazzuolo Strada Aperta festival, which invites national and international street artists to work with residents to revitalize the city center through art.

Her approximately 8-by-8-foot mural is painted on a retractable metal shutter at Via Palazzuolo 76 red. When shops along Via Palazzuolo close their shutters for the evening, the street turns into an art gallery. The street, close to Santa Maria Novella Square, is seeking to revive its historical artisan character and support the local economy.

“It is a message of unity and shared respect, a reminder to travelers that to truly experience a place you must appreciate it, learn from it, connect with it, reflect on it and understand it,” Seanor said.

It is also a message to Florentines, acknowledging the challenges that tourism can bring, while offering a heartfelt reassurance: “Many of us arrive with a deep admiration for this extraordinary city and a genuine desire to honor its culture, its people and its rhythms. In Florence, we can meet not as strangers, but as human beings moved by beauty, history and respect,” Seanor added.

At the heart of the painting is a portrait of Seanor ��. Italian teacher, Maria Antonietta, who motivated Seanor to do her best inside and outside of class. “Maria was my inspiration. She is a world traveler and beautiful soul, and she symbolizes the desire to learn no matter where you go,” she said.

She was also influenced by her own observations of the city. “Others might say it ��. bold to comment on tourism within art, when you yourself are an American. However, my goal was to hopefully close the gap between tourists and locals in Florence,” Seanor said.

“I’m very happy with the results of this mural, with how colorful it is and how it turned out physically, but also with how it changed me as a person,” she added. “I believe this mural and studying abroad have helped me really push myself to try to achieve more, and that is something I am really proud of. It ��. not so easy to leave your comfort zone to try to reach your goals, but when you do, it ��. extremely rewarding.”

An engaging, abstract collage for kids and families

McDowell ��. Koala Dental Care mural was commissioned by the owner through McDowell ��. aunt, who is a dentist in the office. “I am very grateful I had an inside connection and was able to jumpstart a new passion of mine,” she said.

Within the mural design, Koala asked McDowell to combine popular visuals of Minnesota with dental care objects. “These are two completely different topics, so to combine them into one cohesive design, I had to be creative. I combined the ideas in an almost abstract way to create a collage of hidden things. I added a lot of motion and fluidity into the design, making it engaging for kids at the office to look at,” she said.

McDowell had always wanted to learn about the process behind creating a mural, and two courses at �� provided her with that knowledge. Within the Digital Illustration course, McDowell worked with a group of her peers to create a mural design for �� . School of Art and Design. It portrayed humanoid characters interacting with elements of art and design – film, ceramics, video games, music, studio art and more – in purple, blue, orange, yellow and red hues.

Their design was chosen by university leadership to be completed by students in the Graffiti and Street Art summer class in 2024. McDowell enrolled in the class and helped bring her design to life, led by Professor Cynthia Bland and Lecturer Wade Lambrigtsen, owner and proprietor of Vintage Sign Shop in Menomonie. It was the third 400-square-foot, student-designed, student-painted mural on campus, located on the east loading dock of the Applied Arts Building.

“I was inspired by the process. These courses allowed me to get experience outside of school, and I was able to use these skills to further my career and find a new passion,” she said.

“Megan ��. Koala mural is a clear connective thread between the mural production here at Stout and setting up students to become muralists out in the real world,” Bland added.

McDowell graduated this spring and is currently doing freelance work while seeking a full-time career. She wants to continue painting murals as well. “What I love most about animation and digital media is the storytelling. Storytelling through visuals is something I greatly enjoy. I want to bring other people ��. stories to life,” she said.

In summer 2026, Murals in Menomonie, featuring the Walldogs, will transform and uplift the community through public art, helping make Menomonie a more joyful and vibrant place to live.

The animation and digital media program is part of the School of Art and Design, one of the largest public art schools in the Midwest. Art education is offered through the School of Education.

From performing arts events featuring themes of nature and an award-winning musical teaching the power of love and compassion to art exhibitions and philosophical and literary conversations, there are arts and humanities events for everyone at �� this spring. Some monthly highlights include:

Destination Weekend

Inviting families, supporters, alumni and others to campus April 10-12, 2026, to celebrate all things Stout!

University Theater

Students will perform the award-winning musical “Dogfight,” led by Director Audric Buhr, at Harvey Hall Theatre. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on April 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13; and 2 p.m. on April 7.

Enter the flashback of Cpl. Eddie Birdlace, set in San Fransisco on Nov. 21, 1963, the eve of his deployment to Vietnam. He and fellow Marines celebrate their last night of freedom with a bit of debauchery and a game they call a “dogfight.” But when Birdlace meets Rose, an awkward and idealistic waitress whom he enlists to win a cruel bet, she rewrites the rules of the game and teaches him the power of love and compassion.

Concert Performances

The Symphonic Singers, Chamber Choir and Devil Tones Acappella, led by Director Jerry Hui, will present their concert Green Grass and Blue Water at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, at Our Savior ��. Lutheran Church, 910 E. 9th St., in Menomonie. The program celebrates Earth Week with music that praises the beauty of nature and calls for the protection of the environment.

�� Blue Devil Jazz Orchestra / Aaron Durst

The Symphonic Band will present Stars and Sky at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. They will perform new compositions, movie and television soundtracks, with a special visual presentation.

The Blue Devil Jazz Orchestra will present Jazz from Harvey at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at the historic Harvey Hall Theatre. Both groups are led by Director Aaron Durst. Music will include big band favorites, Latin dance styles, and rock/fusion pieces for listeners of jazz from every era.

A number of exhibitions open to the public are scheduled in �� . Furlong Gallery and student Gallery 209, in the Applied Arts Building, as well at the Library Art Lab, on the University Library ��. first floor.

The School of Art and Design Faculty Exhibition runs through Friday, Feb. 23, and showcases the works of interdisciplinary artists and designers.
From Monday, March 4, to Saturday, April 13, Jessica Campbell, of Toronto, and alum Adam Umbach, of New York, will be showcased in the SOAD Speaker Series Invited Artist Solo Exhibitions. A reception will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 7. Campbell is a cartoonist, visual artist and writer originally from British Columbia. Umbach, based out of Brooklyn, New York, is a biographical painter. He earned his B.F.A. in studio art in 2009.
The Student Artist in Residence Exhibition, in the South Gallery, and the Best of Design Juried Exhibition, in the North Gallery, will run from Monday, April 29, to Saturday, Sept. 7. A reception and awards ceremony will be held during SOAD Senior Show, from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 3. SAIR artists are Pheng Thao, a studio art senior from Green Bay, and Joshua Fusco, a graphic communications junior from Shafer, Minn.

Gallery 209 will have a mix of student, club and class exhibits, rotating every week this semester. Exhibits include those by the Fine Arts Association, thesis, photojournalism and advanced printmaking. Also scheduled are:

'Distorted History' / by SAIR artist Pheng Thao

A juried student art exhibit at the Louis Smith Tainter House, home of the Stout Foundation, will feature students’ works from Monday, April 1, to Tuesday, April 30. A reception will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on April 5, at LST House, 320 S. Broadway St., Menomonie.

A drawing exhibition, Inspired by the Mabel, will feature works by Bachelor of Fine Arts students, with a reception at the Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts from 5 to 6 p.m. on April 5, at 205 Main St. E., Menomonie. All are welcome to the exhibit and art class and to see the historic buildings.

The fourth annual Art-U art education program for K-12 students will have an art show on Monday, March 4, location to be determined.

Art-U teaches youth about art, while they create under the instruction of �� art education students. The program is in collaboration with university students, Arts Integration Menomonie (AIM), and Dunn, Eau Claire and Chippewa county 4-H programs.

Art education Program Director Ann Carlisle believes these collaborations increase awareness and appreciation of the visual arts for children and their families.

“They help our preservice art educators to become more confident and competent in teaching. They also bring people together in community to create and enjoy the visual arts collaboratively,” she said.

Civic & Literary Conversations

�� . Center for Applied Ethics aims to advance discussions by modeling respectful and open dialogue, and by bringing informed and knowledgeable perspectives to some of the most important and controversial topics of today.

The center will host two discussions this spring semester:

Sylvester Johnson, director of the Virginia Tech Center for Humanities, will speak about the impact of artificial intelligence on the human condition from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, in the Memorial Student Center Willow/Walnut rooms.
Anne Coughlin, professor of law at the University of Virginia, will present on the recent Dobbs v. Jackson decision that overturned Roe v. Wade from 3 to 4 :30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, location to be determined.

The center also hosts Philosophers’ Cafés, informal, friendly conversations of contemporary issues. Meetings are open to all and are led by �� and UW-Eau Claire faculty. Upcoming conversations will be held at 7 p.m., at Brewery Nonic in Menomonie:

“There are a number of important ethical issues and questions circulating right now,” said Director Xan Bozzo, assistant professor of philosophy. “The Center for Applied Ethics seeks to tackle a wide range of these through a variety of programs and events, often open to all.”

The Literature Committee ��. Reading Across Campus will host featured speaker Patrick O’Donnell, as he presents “The Living Tree: Lady Gregory and the Irish Literary Renaissance,” from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the historic Harvey Hall Theatre.

Originally from Ireland, O’Donnell has been a Minnesota resident for 30 years and has taught at Normandale Community College for 25 years. He is the founder and co-director of the St. Paul Irish Arts Week, and he is the founder and editor of Celtic Junction Arts Review, an online quarterly cultural magazine.

His talk will discuss the greatness of Lady Gregory; her role in the Abbey Theatre, Ireland ��. national theatre; and her play “The Rising of the Moon.” The program will also include a performance by the Chippewa Valley Irish Dance, led by owner and head instructor Brenna Jasper.

The University Archives will host an inaugural series of lectures on interdisciplinary approaches to health care. / ��

University Archives will host a panel on Graphic and Narrative Medicine: Telling Stories of Disease, Pandemics, and Healing from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Monday, March 25, in the University Library room 504A. Reservations are necessary.

As part of an inaugural series of lectures on interdisciplinary approaches to health care, professors Lopa Basu and Mary Climes will share perspectives of literary analysis and comics creation to examine contemporary graphic memoirs and prose genres memorializing recent health crises, including the pandemic. An interactive activity involving writing and drawing a personal memoir will be held after the presentation.

Registration is open for �� . 45th annual Early Childhood Education Conference, held Friday, April 19, to Saturday, April 20.

Keynote speakers musician and author Jim Gill and Raelene Ostberg will present on the theme of joy. In his keynote, “A Joyous Way to Learn,” Gill will share examples of his books and songs and how his creations in music play inspire young children to move, sing and make connections, while learning to regulate their movements.

Ostberg, founder of Thriving Together, will present “Finding Joy.” Through shared real-life stories, educators can learn to construct a personal joy plan to bolster feelings of gratitude and reduce stress as they carry out their critical role in caring for and educating young children.

Gill will also lead Music Play with Purpose, an interactive session with movement games and active music play that can help children develop abilities essential to school success, such as self-regulation and literacy development.

From theater audiences viewing a “live broadcast” and celebrating children ��. creativity at Arts Alive, to musical performances, art exhibits, International Night and learning the history of slavery in the birth of the nation, the arts and humanities are alive at �� this November and December.

�� Theater

Fall Performing arts events lead off with University Theatre ��. “Game Show” at the historic Harvey Hall Theatre, led by Director Audric Buhr. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9, through Saturday, Nov. 11, with a 1:30 p.m. matinee on Sunday, Nov. 12. Adult tickets are $15, and senior and student tickets are $10. Tickets are available at uwstout.universitytickets.com.

“Game Show” places the theater audience in the role of the TV studio audience of a fictional trivia-based game show. As the audience watches the “live broadcast” – where anything can and does happen – they also witness all the backstage, back-stabbing antics “behind the scenes.”

Musical Performances

The Blue Devil Jazz Orchestra will present Jazz in the Great Hall at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 11, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. And the Symphonic Band will present a Fall Concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 3, in the MSC Great Hall. Both groups are led by Director Aaron Durst. Tickets are $5 and are available online at uwstout.universitytickets.com, Memorial Student Center Service Desk, 715-232-1122, and at the door.

The Jazz Orchestra will play a number of different pieces, including the sounds of jazz-rock group Chicago, and will feature Daniel Ivankovic, a computer and electrical engineering senior from Eau Claire, as vocalist. He will also sing “Cheek to Cheek” by Irving Berlin, as made famous by Frank Sinatra. Two ballads will be a part of the concert: “God Bless the Child” by Billie Holiday and “When I Fall in Love” by Victor Young. Emma Nuechterlein, an applied social science senior from Kewaunee, will sing Henry Mancini ��. “It Had Better Be Tonight.”

The Symphonic Band is preparing a variety of pieces for the December concert, including works by Vaclav Nelhybel; Gordon Jacob; “Rapture,” a new work by Brian Balmages; Pavel Tschesnokoff; Dmitri Shostakovich ��. “Waltz No. 2”; John Mackey; and John Philip Sousa.

Led by Director Jerry Hui, the concert takes a lighthearted look at the weather in a variety of musical styles, from funny to romantic, from the Sesame Street theme to rocking gospel ballads. The evening will feature WQOW evening news anchor Shannon Hoyt, 2018 professional communication and emerging media alum, and meteorologist Matt Schaefer as hosts.

A companion art exhibit featuring weather-themed artworks by School of Art and Design students will be installed at the Art Lab, on the University Library first floor. The exhibit will open mid-November through January 2024.

Visual Arts

The second annual Arts Alive Community Art Show will be held at the Raw Deal the entire month of November, featuring the artwork of 45 K-12 students from the Menomonie school district.

An Arts Alive event will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 15, at the Raw Deal, with an awards ceremony at 5:45 p.m. �� Devil Tone Acapella and Jazz Embers groups will perform.

“Childhood is magical. Every child needs to express themselves through the arts and discover who they are as a person and as a budding artist. Arts Alive is a wonderful opportunity to participate in a professional art show as a child artist,” said Oaklawn Elementary art teacher Kim Roberts. “My students are so excited to be included. This is a powerful opportunity for them to see how important the arts are in our community.”

Art education Program Director Ann Oberding-Carlisle works with preservice art educators and community art teachers. “My work with them has been a highlight of mine here at Stout. Building community is the core of what we do in preparing our students to participate in civic life while advocating for the arts,” she said.

The event is coordinated by the art education program, the visual and performing arts department and sponsored by Arts Integration Menomonie.

The Student Artist-in-Residence program will hold its inaugural SAiR Fall Artist Talk. The two artists will give a presentation about their work in progress from 5 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16, in the University Library second-floor open area. A tour of the SAiR collection in the library will follow. Refreshments will be provided by the Stout University Foundation.

Students selected to the prestigious program for the 2023-24 academic year are Pheng Thao, a studio art senior from Green Bay, and Joshua Fusco, a graphic communications junior from Shafer, Minn.

Thao, who has a concentration in photography, is researching what Hmong refugees faced during the Vietnam War. “I want to dive deep into their long escape on foot, loss of hope and any hidden stories that have been passed down through generations,” he said.

“Then, by visually projecting these emotional stories and data onto photographic or sculptural artwork, I’m able to build a bridge that connects Hmong people with their cultural past, present and possible future. To build an artwork where they can visually learn about who and what they once were or still are. I hope to continue to do more research and interact more with people about these topic choices,” Thao said.

All �� students are eligible to apply for the Bud and Betty Micheels Student Artists-in-Residence program. Selected artists work all academic year toward a two-person exhibit in Furlong Gallery in May and have one piece selected for the permanent collection in the library. Each student receives a $2,000 stipend, up to $1,000 for materials or related expenses as well as an appropriate workspace.

International Night is a cultural expo, free and open to the public. / Office of International Education

Culture & Literature

�� . annual International Night, hosted by the Office of International Education and the International Club student organization, is from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16. in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. The cultural expo is free and open to the public. It is an opportunity to connect with international students and learn about their countries and cultures.

OIE and the International Club will also host back-to-back presentations on the countries and cultures of Tunisia and Pakistan presented by IREX visiting scholars. The presentations will be from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 14, in the MSC Oakwood room.

Events are in conjunction with International Education Week, Monday, Nov. 13, to Friday, Nov. 17, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences.

The Literature Committee's Reading Across Campus will host a concert reading and exhibition of Lady Gregory's "The Rising of the Moon" from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 16, in Harvey Hall Theatre. It is a collaboration between the Literature Committee, University Theatre students and Director Audric Buhr. The concert reading is free and open to the public and will be accompanied by a pop-up exhibit on Lady Gregory prepared by Professor Joan Navarre's students.

�� . Center for Applied Ethics will host a discussion with Pulitzer Prize winner Edward J. Larson on his book “American Inheritance: Liberty and Slavery in the Birth of a Nation” from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 15, in the Memorial Student Center Ballroom A. Larson will discuss the relationship between liberty and slavery in the birth of the United States and the founding leaders championing liberty while enslaving Black people.

And a discussion, Should We Remove Racist Monuments? will be held virtually in Microsoft Teams from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 30. Debaters will be Travis Timmerman, of Seton Hall University, and Daniel Demetriou, of University of Minnesota, Morris.

“We seem to live in an age where everything is politicized: slavery, racism, abortion, transgenderism, climate change, animal welfare, artificial intelligence, democracy and so on. The center ��. mission is to help advance the discussion by having it in an informed, healthy and enjoyable way. People are yearning for informed and healthy discussions around these issues,” said center Director Xan Bozzo, assistant professor of philosophy.

Center at the heart of Heritage Hall project provides critical career training through community service

Families from around Wisconsin are facing significant shortages of quality child care programs, caused in large part by a shortage of licensed early childhood staff.

�� is committed to building the state ��. child care workforce through its Child and Family Study Center, School of Education programs and collaborative programs within Heritage Hall and across campus.

Recently, Child Care Partnership conducted a survey on child care capacity related to the early childhood teacher shortage and the impacts in western Wisconsin. Of the 116 licensed group child care centers in the 10-county area, 70% responded to the survey.

They reported having to adjust their capacity because of a shortage of qualified staff. And although the group centers reported hiring almost 600 times in the last 12 months, there are still more than 300 staff positions open. In addition to adjusted capacity, more than 50 classrooms closed, resulting in a loss of more than 1,600 child care slots.

In these counties, waiting lists for families outweigh availability, with 90% of programs reporting a waiting list of more than 4,000 children. And across the state, three or more children compete for every available child care spot, with 54% of Wisconsin residents living in child care deserts.

Without support around the child care staffing crisis, 16% of CCP group child care programs reported they were facing closure due to the ongoing issue of not having qualified staff.

As part of Gov. Evers proposed 2023-25 budget, $340 million would be invested in the Child Care Counts: COVID-19 Stabilization Payment Program, along with $22 million to support the Wisconsin Department of Children and Families’ Partner Up! Program.

Without ongoing financial support through programs like Child Care Counts and Partner Up!, 44% of CCP programs were unsure they would remain in business, and 21% felt they would close in the near future.

Child Care Partnership, a Western Dairyland Community Action Agency program, serves Buffalo, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin, Pierce, Polk, St. Croix, and Trempealeau counties and the Ho-Chunk Nation. Its goal is to increase access to consistent, affordable and quality child care services.

University center helping to make a difference

The Child and Family Study Center practices the university ��. polytechnic mission of providing hands-on experiences to undergraduate and master ��. students to prepare them for careers in child care and early childhood education. The CFSC also helps train future teachers, counselors and dietitians through academic instruction, research, classroom observations and service-learning.

This year, 63 children of university students, faculty, staff and community members are participating in CFSC programming. / ��

The CFSC is licensed by the state. Instructional staff teach in five classrooms and labs in two locations on campus: the Infant/Toddler Lab in Heritage Hall, with children 6 weeks through 3 years of age; and the Preschool, with children 3 to 6 years, including the 4K program, in partnership with the School District of the Menomonie Area.

As a National Association for the Education of Young Children accredited program, the CFSC is held to guidelines regarding teacher preparation. It holds a five-star rating in the YoungStar system, which ensures the health and safety of child care in Wisconsin.

“We have a reputation of quality and intentional programming to support children's success,” said Director Allison Feller. “Our qualified staff exemplify excellence and directly impact our program's success. By staying abreast of current research and developments in the field of early childhood education, they mentor future educators who are prepared to enter the workforce.”

This year, 63 children of university students, faculty, staff and community members are in CFSC programming. They represent diverse cultural backgrounds and receive care and learning opportunities for up to 10 hours each day, 50 hours each week.

Each year, the CFSC collaborates with more than 20 programs across campus, with more than 650 university students engaging in professional development practices.

Undergraduate programs represented include early childhood education; art education; and human development and family studies; and master ��. programs include school counseling; school psychology; clinical mental health counseling and nutrition and dietetics.

“We're educating highly qualified candidates for programs when children are at the most critical stage of development,” Feller said.

Kayla Hewitt, an early childhood education alum, is a behavioral therapist with an early intervention program. She works one-on-one with children ages 2 and older, who are on the autism spectrum. Using applied behavior analysis, Hewitt guides children to understand their abilities to their best advantage, so that they may have the most independent life they can.

“My education from Stout has given me the best tools to excel in my position,” Hewitt said. “I use individualization and differentiation every single day. I also utilize the training I received at Stout to create plans for programming, thinking outside the box for creatively presenting new learning objectives while aiming for the most multimodal experience for the child. The skills I learned to help manage classrooms and learning environments, as well as building family relationships and rapport, has helped me to be the best behavior therapist I can be.”

The Preschool building opened in 1971; the Heritage Hall Infant/Toddler Lab opened in 1973.

The Heritage Hall renovation will support building a new CFSC, strengthening state-of-the-art programming and curriculum to keep �� students at the forefront of innovative and evidence-based early childhood services. A newly designed center will also include a common space for faculty, staff, community partners and families to expand existing collaborations and campus initiatives.

The renovation of Heritage Hall, which received priority approval from the UW System Board of Regents, is ranked No. 1 in the Chippewa Valley and No. 3 for major academic building renovation projects. Renovation is slated to begin in 2026.

Community partnerships, campus collaborations benefit multiple stakeholders

The collaborations between the Child and Family Study Center and cross-campus programs offer university students – who are preparing to enter Wisconsin ��. child care workforce – multiple experiential learning opportunities to work with children and families.

Professor Christine Peterson believes the CFSC positively impacts M.S. and Ed.S. school psychology students. They assess 3K students for their clinical practicums to profile preacademic skills at the beginning and end of each academic year.

This collaboration benefits multiple stakeholders, Peterson explained, including the graduate students who receive applied learning experience; and CFSC instructional staff and parents who receive meaningful information about instruction and a benchmark measure of progress. CFSC submits this data annually to the National Association for the Education of Young Children.

“The CFSC stands out on our campus as a model for lab-based programming; it simultaneously serves multiple programs, enhances the applied student experience for not only preservice teachers but multiple other disciplines, and provides a critical community service,” Peterson said.

Clinical mental health counseling Professor Julie Bates-Maves believes �� . labs, like the CFSC, are at the heart of the university ��. polytechnic distinction.

“This indispensable lab brings life to the developmental considerations, attachment theory, and social and emotional development we teach in our courses,” Bates-Maves said. “Having the opportunity to try on one ��. counseling skills with young populations is critical, as is the opportunity to observe developmental expression in person versus simply reading about it.

“The center provides a model of healthy caregiving, allowing our students to further observe interactional styles between adults and children that support emotional development. As emerging professional counselors, our students will educate parents and caregivers on how to support children in the midst of normal development, but also those experiencing developmental crises,” Bates-Maves said.

This spring semester, Assistant Professor Lindsay Heidelberger, program director of M.S. nutrition and dietetics, has connected Professor Deb Sheats to collaborate with CFSC staff to provide master's students in the Nutrition Education and Counseling course with hands-on, polytechnic learning. Students will observe meal times at the CFSC, conduct needs assessments with staff and create nutrition education video lessons for children and their families.

“Having access to the CFSC has been integral to the students’ learning by providing experiential learning in a real-world setting as a nutrition educator,” Heidelberger said.

The Child & Family Study Center is a university education laboratory school committed to creating a link between educational theory and hands-on practice. Infant & Toddler Education Lab

��'s Infant & Toddler Education Lab is a certified childcare center for the university staff, students, and the Menomonie community. Students in the School of Education's B.S. Early Childhood Education program provide childcare for children ages 0-3. Aaron Wisecup, a senior in ECE, assists in and teaches children for nine weeks during the semester.

"We really focus on teaching the children self-help skills and social and emotional skills, like learning to share toys, take turns, and asking friends if they are hurt," Wisecup said.

Working alongside other student staff and experienced faculty, and watching the children progress gives students the necessary experience to benefit in their future teaching careers.

Education students help to inspire others to meet the growing need of teachers in Wisconsin

Nearly 150 high school students from 27 schools around the state attended Teach Day at �� on Nov. 14.

Hosted by the School of Education, the event is an opportunity for high school students to learn from �� teacher education students and for university students to practice their skills as future teachers.

“We are thrilled to be hosting so many students from across the state,” said SOE Director Deanna Schultz. “The interest in teaching as a future career is exciting to see, and we hope these young people will leave with information and the determination to continue on this career path.”

Over the next five years, Wisconsin is projected to need nearly 2,400 additional qualified teachers, with job growth expected to increase by 3.5% over the next decade. The value of graduates from ��'s education programs has never been greater for Wisconsin schools.

University students led much of Teach Day, with support from program directors. Students shared why they chose the university, why they plan to enter the teaching profession and led breakout sessions where high school students learned about their program of interest.

Isabelle Whited, a visiting student from Wausau West High School, joined the technology education group. “I found technology was an area I excelled in. I wouldn’t have explored it if it weren’t for my teacher Mr. Peterson. I want to help other students explore and excel in technology,” Whited said.

High school students learned how to write a lesson plan, which they could take back to their schools and use to teach a class. They also toured campus and met with university students during lunch to talk more about their programs of interest.

Event responds to growing need for teachers

Last year ��. pilot program focused on family and consumer sciences education; marketing and business education; and technology education. About a dozen Wisconsin high school students attended.

Teach Day, this year, expanded to include nearly all undergraduate SOE programs: art education; early childhood education; family and consumer sciences; marketing and business education; math education; special education; and technology education.

“The expansion resulted in an increase in numbers, especially those interested in early childhood education. The event was also marketed to teachers at the �� Family and Consumer Education Conference in September, and many of them brought their students to Teach Day,” Schultz said.

Students interested in early childhood education and family and consumer sciences made up nearly two-thirds of the attending registrants.

Sarah Korte, a junior in family and consumer sciences, volunteered during Teach Day “because I know that not only do we need teachers, but I love to inspire and encourage others to find what they love to do in life.”

Korte was in Family, Career and Community Leaders of America in high school. FCCLA and her family and consumer sciences teacher helped her learn that she loves to teach.

“I love this event because I get to share my passion for teaching, and I get to teach other people about my major and ��. This event gives people the opportunity to explore teaching in an interactive way,” Korte said.

Technology education majors Sam Konieczny and Ben Schmitt also volunteer during Teach Day. Their high school technology education teachers were influential in their decisions to teach.

Schmitt assisted his teacher in high school, working with his classmates and stepping up into a leadership role. “I hope my involvement with Teach Day gives high school students that opportunity to experience teaching for a day and gain clarity about a path to teaching through ��,” he said.

“Teach Day gives high school students who are looking at a career in education a chance to see the other side of the desk and what Stout has to offer them,” Konieczny added.

Konieczny believes education is one of the most rewarding careers. “It is the best thing to be working with someone and watch what they weren’t understanding click and make sense. And to work and inspire students to find themselves and prepare them for a future in a career that excites them,” he said.

Korte, of Wisconsin Rapids, hopes to student teach at Mauston High School before graduating in spring 2024. She plans to teach in central Wisconsin. Konieczny and Schmitt plan to student teach in fall 2023 and graduate that semester. Schmitt, of Somerset, would like to teach in western Wisconsin.

Konieczny, from Oak Creek, a Milwaukee suburb, would like to “go back to the Milwaukee area and give back to the community that helped me get to where I am today,” he said. “When I look back at some of the people who made the biggest difference in my life, it was my teachers. For me to think I can make that same difference and influence someone in that way is something that excites me.”

�� . School of Education, housed in Heritage Hall, offers seven undergraduate teaching degrees, as well as postgraduate degrees in career and technical education, education, school counseling and school psychology and eight education certificates and certifications.

SOE programs are among the many workforce-ready programs administered in Heritage Hall, a near-50-year-old building that is scheduled for major renovation after receiving priority approval from the UW System Board of Regents. Professors at �� . School of Education have developed an instrument for measuring students’ dispositions, part of the school ��. assessment system for its seven undergraduate teacher education programs.

The disposition committee presented “Professional Dispositions: Development, Validation and Implementation” to colleagues from universities around the country at the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education conference in March, in New Orleans.

A disposition is the professional attitudes, values and beliefs of educators, demonstrated through their verbal and nonverbal behaviors as they interact with students, families, colleagues and communities.

The committee developed the new disposition instrument to measure education students’ progress as they reach benchmarks within their teaching programs. Students’ dispositions are reviewed by faculty and staff before they begin student teaching.

The committee identified 15 dispositions to be measured that fit under five major categories: collaboration, continuous learning, inclusiveness, professionalism and reflection.

Kevin Mason, special education program director and disposition committee chair, believes it is “absolutely vital for every teacher to be able to collaborate and communicate effectively and respectfully with students and families. Those skills cannot be measured on a standardized exam for teacher licensure.

“At ��, we teach our preservice teachers to work effectively with students and families in our courses and through a variety of field experiences in the classroom. We want our graduates to be great with kids and contribute positively to their school and community,” he said.

After the conference, Mason received several requests from colleagues around the country who wanted more information.

“The attendees were very impressed with the development, validation and implementation of our professional disposition instrument at ��,” Mason said. “Some have adapted it for their own teacher education programs.”

Assistant Professor Julienne Cuccio Slichko at the College of St. Rose created self-paced modules for their students to learn about the dispositions. “We are so very grateful to �� . department for getting us started,” she said.

The committee members are Mason; Ann Carlisle, art education; Allison Feller, Child and Family Study Center; Diane Klemme, family and consumer science education; Jim McMullen, school counseling; Chris Peterson, school psychology; and Deb Stanislawski, marketing and business education.

AACTE is a nonprofit national alliance of education programs dedicated to the professional development of pre-K-12 teachers and school leaders, representing more than 800 postsecondary institutions with educator preparation programs.

A renovation to support Wisconsin ��. workforce needs

�� . School of Education, housed in Heritage Hall, offers seven undergraduate teaching degrees and five postgraduate teaching degrees, as well as eight education certificates and certifications

SOE is working to fill a statewide need for teachers, as many school districts struggle to fill existing positions. Wisconsin K-12 schools made nearly 3,700 emergency teacher hires in 2020, according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

SOE graduates approximately 100 undergraduate students and 25 graduate students each year, with a 99% employment rate within six months of graduating.

Heritage Hall, one of the university ��. busiest classroom and lab buildings, serves more than 2,000 students each academic year. It is also home to the School of Hospitality Leadership, nutrition and family health, and the Weidner Center for residential property management. It will be the future home of four Graduate School programs in clinical mental health counseling, marriage and family therapy, psychology and school counseling.

Major renovation of Heritage Hall ranked No. 1 in Chippewa Valley, third for UW System academic buildings

A critical renovation project of one of �� . busiest classroom and lab buildings has taken a major step forward.

A major renovation of the hall received priority approval on Aug. 19, at the UW System Board of Regents meeting held at UW-Green Bay. The project is ranked No. 1 in the Chippewa Valley and third for UW System academic buildings.

The state job outlook for graduates from most of the programs based in the building is expected to grow between 6% and 15% by 2025. The improved capacity provided by the Heritage Hall renovations will help provide qualified Wisconsin workers to address workforce needs.

The Board of Regents’ action means that the renovation will be in the UW System ��. capital request to the Legislature for the 2023-25 state budget. If the $120,614,000 project is included in the state budget, final approval still is needed by the State Building Commission. Construction could begin as early as fall 2025 and will take about 24 months.

Art education majors at University of Wisconsin-Stout and Arts Integration Menomonie partnered with 4-H Club educators in Dunn, Chippewa and Eau Claire counties to bring online art classes to their students in kindergarten through seventh grade this spring.

About 40 students were involved in Art U, taught by four preservice art teachers. Their creative works are on display through Friday, May 6, at the university ��. Heritage Hall, first floor lobby.

The themes of the work vary between grade levels, and mediums vary from drawing, watercolor, printmaking and beading.

The opportunity for online art teaching arose when the challenges brought on by the pandemic put many preservice teaching experiences on hold, explained art education Program Director Ann Oberding. A grant from AIM allowed for reduced programming cost.

“Being able to bring art into people ��. homes is important, especially during times of crisis,” she said. “Like many other teacher preparation programs, we struggled to find ways to continue to support our students' growth as educators. It took an amazing amount of hours, people and preparation for this series of classes to take place.”

Oberding met with Assistant Professor Tami Weiss, AIM executive director, and Dunn County 4-H Program Educator Luisa Gerasimo in fall 2021 to discuss how to support 4-H students with art, as well as help build the competence and confidence of art education preservice teachers.

This is the second time �� and AIM have partnered with the Dunn County 4-H.

For Susan Krahn, this is her family ��. second year participating in an A.I.M. virtual art experience. “I love how my children have learned new art techniques and ways to be creative,” she said. “We wouldn't come up with these great art project ideas on our own, and Art U makes it easy with basic art supplies at home.”

Lily Schwartz, a 4-H high school student, has enjoyed using everyday materials to enhance her artwork.

“I've always been fascinated by 3D paintings; however, I never could figure out how to accomplish such a piece. I was thrilled to learn how to by using toilet paper and cardboard on canvas,” she said.

Her mother, Beth, added, “Lily has been able to watch and listen to some of the college art educators while creating her piece. This is an amazing opportunity for her to be in the art ed department at one of the universities that is high on her list, in a field she wants to pursue. For us, this isn't just about the art she will create, but the observation and learning that is happening at the same time.”

Oberding is proud of her preservice art teachers. “They rock,” she said. “They know that their presence and the visual arts will make a difference in the world. They are dedicated and are willing to go the extra mile to gain knowledge and practice and help to build a community that loves art.”

Springsteen proud to earn his degree, is dedicated to his career choice

James Springsteen ��. college experience wasn’t like most of his peers’ at ��. It was interesting but not normal, as he described it.

He didn’t live on campus until his fifth year. That experience was cut short in March 2020 by COVID-19 when the halls were closed as the university moved to an alternative learning period.

He also wasn't overly involved with campus clubs or student organizations, although he did enjoy his time with Lutheran Campus Ministry, joining the lead team and attending leadership retreats.

Maybe what sets Springsteen ��. experience apart the most is the amount of time he spent at ��.

After facing seven years of seemingly endless challenges, he’ll graduate on Saturday, Dec. 18, with his Bachelor of Science in art education and a minor in studio art.

“I'm proud that I didn't give up, because my last few years were a real struggle. It seemed like an uphill battle every step of the way, but it's finally here,” he said.

‘Where life wanted to take me’

In high school, Springsteen knew he wanted to study either graphic design or art education, but he was torn between them. He asked his art teacher, who’d previously been a graphic designer, for advice on what he should do and she thought he’d do well in either field.

He enjoyed working with kids, having served for several years at a summer camp and as a teacher ��. aide in his art classes.

“I took a big leap and last minute decided to go into art education,” said Springsteen, of Cumberland. “To me, it was the best idea because it ��. the best of both worlds. I get to work with kids and help them grow. And I still get to do art, like printmaking with my minor.”

�� was the only college Springsteen applied to. His mom, Heidi, graduated in 1989 with a degree in business administration, and both of his art teachers are alums. He spent a lot of time talking with them about the art education program and the resources it offers.

“It seemed like �� was where life wanted to take me,” Springsteen said.

“I also heard that Stout had one of the best art programs in the area and that their art education program was good as well. So, to me, it just made sense to attend Stout.”

‘A dedicated person and teacher’

Springsteen ��. challenges began in his sophomore year, when he made his biggest mistake of not putting in the effort, he said. He was having negative family issues and seasonal depression. He avoided his friends and stopped attending campus activities. His grades slipped, and in the spring his grade point average was .004 away from academic suspension.

“Seeing my GPA that low really woke me up,” he said. “For the next five years, I worked hard.”

In an effort to boost his GPA, Springsteen retook a year ��. worth of classes, along with Winterm classes. But even after that, his GPA was still low, too low in fact to begin his student teaching. So, he took extra art classes, adding on his studio art minor.

“Art always came easy to me, so it was something that made sense,” he said.

At the start of last summer, Springsteen ��. GPA was still .04 away from being able to student teach. So, he took two summer courses, and with two weeks left before the 2021-22 academic year, he entered his paperwork and began student teaching this fall.

“I won’t lie; I wanted to drop out more than once, but I knew I’d regret it,” he said. “I was so invested and so close to being done with school, so I kept pushing forward.

“There were a lot of bitter moments, but I believe these challenges made me a better and more dedicated person and teacher.”

What Springsteen enjoyed most about the art ed program was the faculty. Through his struggles, he came to rely on them, especially Program Director Ann Oberding and Assistant Professor Tami Weiss.

“I really appreciated the support from Ann and Tami, more than they probably realize,” he said. “If something came up, I knew I could ask them. Even if it wasn’t school related, I knew I could talk to them. They both taught me a lot.”

Oberding believes Springsteen has shown fortitude and patience through his challenges, both personally and professionally. She admires his perseverance and compassion.

“James remained steadfast in his conviction to become an art teacher. His compassion is evident,” she said. “Our schools need teachers who are compassionate and persevere through adversity.”

Teaching experiences in art

Springsteen led classes for Arts Integration Menomonie for a semester, teaching community members about different artists, painting methods and how to mix color.

He completed his student teaching in Clear Lake, at the elementary, middle and high school levels. While many education students have student teaching experiences in two or more school districts, he ��. enjoyed staying in one district. And he likes the rural school and small class sizes.

“I’ve really gotten to know the kids well, and it gave me a chance to get to know the staff,” he said. “I really enjoy working with high school students and would like to teach at that level. They’re more independent, and I can challenge them to push themselves more.”

His experiences with classroom management, teaching methods and new mediums have prepared him for his own classroom. He ��. been offered a substitute position with Clear Lake, as he seeks a full-time teaching position.

“Stout has helped me improve my skills in the art field all around. I can apply my education from art classes and education classes to my own classes in the future,” he said. “I feel very prepared to teach. I have felt prepared for a while now, but after getting to student teach and actually getting experience in the field, I know this is what I want to do, and I'm ready.”

Arts Integration Menomonie impacts teachers by helping to incorporate art in the classroom

With the “AIM” of helping teachers find more joy in the classroom through art, Arts Integration Menomonie partnered with the School District of the Menomonie Area and University of Wisconsin-Stout to offer a free Fine Arts Camp for elementary students this past summer.

Ten art education students co-taught with school district mentor teachers for the weeklong camp, which was held at River Heights Elementary, July 26-30.

Art education students who worked at the camp were: Olivia Bonlander, Chilton; Jackson Gardner, Eau Claire; Paige Hansen, Farmington, Minn.; Hannah Heimer, River Falls; Holly Hopkins, Cornell; Lauren Landsverk, Minneapolis; Jacob Mazourek, Rice Lake; Benjamin Mohr, Appleton; Samantha Snyder, St. Paul; and Hannah Waldner, McFarland.

"Children at the Fine Arts Camp got the best of both worlds – experienced and licensed teacher mentors and vibrant university students who are learning more about how to be qualified teachers,” said Ann Oberding, art education program director. “Collaborative, hands-on, career-focused programs like this help to create happy future teachers."

There were 125 first- to fifth-grade students who participated in the camp. �� and SDMA have partnered through the AIM grant for six years.

AIM Coordinator Nicole Cook facilitated the roles of mentors and students throughout the week. “The purpose of AIM is to help teachers feel competent and confident using arts integration in the classroom,” Cook said. “Often, if they haven’t been involved in the arts, they don’t feel comfortable using it in the classroom.

“The whole week was about the college students and mentors sharing teaching and classroom management skills and artistic abilities, while making connections for future student teaching or practicum opportunities.”

Collaborating in the classroom

Bonlander, a senior in art education, was paired with Shelly Duex, a health education teacher at Menomonie Middle School. They taught students to use acrylic paint, teaching them important skills, vocabulary and art-making techniques to use in their own work, Bonlander said.

“By working with an educator that was unfamiliar with the content, I focused on not only teaching the information in a fun and interesting way but also making the information manageable,” she said. “We worked on how to use the paint and keywords when working with multiple colors. We discussed gradients, tints, shades and tones.”

Bonlander then led the class through creating a painting and a step-by-step landscape using the art techniques. “I chose this project so that students could 100% feel successful in and confident with their ability to use acrylic paint. The landscape was a huge success and proved that the vocabulary we covered can be used in their future projects.”

As a health teacher, Duex ��. main goal is to help students live a healthy life physically, socially and emotionally. She participated in the camp because she wanted to assist future educators with effective classroom management skills, she said.

“I also wanted to learn from the artist, so I can incorporate art into my health classroom,” she added. “Working with Olivia was an enjoyable experience because we both brought different strengths to the classroom, and we were able to learn from each other. It is also wonderful to meet people who have a similar passion as you do.”

Duex ��. biggest takeaway from the camp was learning the importance of vocabulary when teaching a skill related to art. “Putting purpose and meaning behind an art form allows students to broaden their vocabulary and create a sense of worth with what they are doing,” she said.

“Focusing on arts integration is impactful because it is important to understand that art can be used as an aid in many different subjects,” Bonlander added.

Bonlander also worked in the STEAM and TEAM summer school camps. She will graduate in spring 2022 and hopes to teach in either middle or high school.

Mentorships, internships build creative community for students on, off campus

The Children ��. Art Club, a free community art class offered through Arts Integration Menomonie, gives emerging artists and teachers in �� . art education program hands-on experience from the moment they step on campus.

The club is held every Tuesday evening during the school year for children in kindergarten through grade eight. Art education seniors Elsbeth Bandli, of Sun Prairie, and Olivia Bonlander, of Chilton, have served as CAC co-coordinators and lead instructors for the past two years. In that time, they’ve become close friends.

“CAC provides a place, whether it be in person or virtual, for preservice educators, professors and community members to share in the joy of creating,” Bandli said.

In 2019-20, about 25 children attended their classes each week at the University Library, until the campus closed in March 2020 because of COVID-19. For the remainder of the spring semester, Bandli and Bonlander needed to prepare virtual classes. They created prerecorded lessons, which they posted on AIM ��. Facebook page.

“We were scared what would become of CAC once we went virtual. We realized we were not going to get to see the kids interact in the artmaking process, which was such a huge part of why CAC was amazing,” Bonlander said.

For the 2020-21 school year, they proposed a synchronous virtual option to art education Program Director Ann Oberding and Assistant Professor Tami Weiss, executive director of AIM. Classes met virtually in Microsoft Teams, with 15 to 20 children attending each week. Bandli and Bonlander coordinated the pick-up of free art kits for registrants at the beginning of each semester.

Children were instructed on how to create collages, acrylic paintings, drawings and other projects following a theme. This year ��. theme was Artists of the Past, Present and Future, which focused on historical and contemporary artists. The club has ended for the school year and will begin again in September when families can register on the AIM website.

Casey Olson loves seeing her daughter Sophia ��. artwork expand and develop over the course of the year. “When the class is over each week, she runs out of her room to excitedly inform me all about the artist of the night and the techniques they used. The class has been a great outlet for her to collaborate with other kids who also enjoy art,” Olson said.

Bandli and Bonlander stress that the children are the artists of the future and included artistic choices for them to express themselves. Coordinating CAC has helped them learn from the children and about themselves as educators.

Deanna Schultz, interim associate dean of the College of Education, Hospitality, Health and Human Sciences, was impressed by what the art education students accomplished virtually this past year. “It ��. a great example of being innovative in teaching something that is so hands-on,” she said.

Building community through art experiences

Lead CAC instructors serve as student mentors for first-year students in the Art Education Introductory course as they teach for the first time in the art club.

“In this way, Children's Art Club is really special,” Oberding said. “We believe support right from the beginning of their experience at Stout is what sets us apart from other programs, as well as joining with the rest of our polytechnic tenants.”

As a mentor, Bonlander enjoys aiding in the education of future educators. “Students helping other students and creating a sense of solidarity is vital to being successful within the program and feeling as if you are a part of a community,” she said.

Bonlander loves the interactions she sees at CAC between the instructors and children. “Oftentimes, CAC is the first teaching experience art education students have. Seeing them feel comfortable and starting conversations with children always makes my heart warm,” she said. “The relationships that I have built with students over the past two years is the exact reason why I want to be a teacher.”

Bailey Iwen is the incoming CAC coordinator. She wants to help children grow their knowledge and skills and help them see the world as a better place. She ��. preparing different themes for new projects, as well as traditional styles for building art skills.

“Teaching art is so much more than crafts and projects. It is preparing future generations to think creatively, see reality in its rawest form and engage with the wonders of the world,” she said. “Children ��. Art Club provides such a wholesome opportunity for students to partake in, learning about art and creating together. I couldn’t help but be a part of it.”

Iwen, a sophomore from Merrill, choose �� . art education program because her high school art teacher was an alum.

“I’m grateful for the education she provided me. I want to return the favor to students of my own someday. I figured the best way to start would be earning the most similar education,” she said.

PAINT internship program

Another program made possible through AIM is the Program for Arts Integration for New Teachers. PAINT offers art education students internships to teach arts-based classes in the Menomonie community.

Bandli and Bonlander participated in various internships through PAINT, including internship supervisor, residency teacher positions at area schools, teaching art at the Parks and Recreation Center, AIM mindfulness mentor and art education social media coordinator.

“PAINT gave me real-life experiences I would not have received otherwise,” Bonlander said. “I am to the point in my education that my main role is helping others become amazing educators. I think that says a lot about PAINT.”

When Bandli entered the art education program, she was inspired by the amazing things the PAINT interns were doing and knew she wanted to make an impact as a leader in the program.

“My internships increased my confidence and competence as a preservice teacher. I practiced mindfulness and made friendships and connections with the community that made me a happier student and reaffirmed my commitment to teaching,” Bandli said. “I know that Olivia and I will continue to support each other as we enter the teaching profession.”

Bandli will student teach this fall and graduate in December. She hopes to teach at an elementary school and remain involved with the AIM grant as an alum. “I hope to visit and give back to a college program that has taught me so much,” she said.

Bonlander will graduate in spring 2022. She has a minor in English writing and literature. She hopes to teach in either middle or high school.

AIM develops art programs to support new teachers in partnership with ��, the arts education and early childhood education programs, and the School District of the Menomonie Area.
