Before stepping onto the runway at �� . annual WEAR Fashion Show on Saturday, May 3, two fashion design and development students and their models joined Anna Mathsen, a professional and technical communication senior, for a photoshoot in the university ��. PARSEC Lab.

This was no ordinary photoshoot, however. For her digital humanities capstone project, Mathsen is building a digital fashion portfolio of her friends’ apparel collections using the PARSEC Lab ��. 3D-modeling photogrammetry software.

The collections, created by Mathsen ��. boyfriend, Evan Tomczyk, and roommate, Lucas Moreno-Martinez III, will be premiered at WEAR, along with more than a dozen of their fashion design peers.

Moreno-Martinez ��. collection “Vex” features four outfits inspired by Dracula ��. brides and represents his different personalities. “The collection is versatile, with silhouettes that are both familiar and impractical, with dreamlike textures,” he said.

Tomczyk enjoys designing jackets. “Pants make an outfit, but jackets make it interesting,” he said. Two of his four jackets designed this semester will be modeled at WEAR.

WEAR will be held at 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. The vivid runway display showcases and celebrates fashion students’ innovative collections and illustrates their journey from hands-on, studio-based learning to wearable, industry-forward couture.

�� fashion design graduates work in major design houses and apparel companies, including lululemon, Steve Madden, Ardisam Inc., Nike, Patagonia, and more, and have founded their own design houses, like the international boutique Mara Marie Bridal.

Fashion and photogrammetry

PARSEC – or Photogrammetry and Reflectivity for STEM Research and Education in the Chippewa Valley – is a photogrammetry space within �� . Fab Lab.

It has 120 DSLR cameras mounted on a frame to capture 120 photos of an object or person simultaneously. The images, taken within milliseconds, are imported into software that stitches the images together into a detailed 3D model.

The technology is used to create assets in video games, architectural models, interactive digital artifacts for museums and more.

Mathsen, of Eden Prairie, had done a manual photogrammetry project in a previous digital humanities class, where she took dozens of photos asynchronously by hand and edited them herself to create a high-resolution scan.

“The PARSEC Lab is much more efficient. I was excited to use the equipment here. I hope more students use this space for their projects,” she said.

For her portfolio, Mathsen wanted to utilize what she’d learned and cater to her friends’ interests. “I admire fashion, and Evan and Lucas have a passion for design. I wanted to spotlight their work, their design process and completed looks,” she said.

Mathsen is using the Shorthand website creator to build the lookbook for the apparel collections. Student models were Marilena Grado, a fashion design student; Claire Jost, an industrial design student; and Isaac Tester, a graphic design and interactive media senior.

Moreno-Martinez, a senior from Vesper, enjoys designing women ��. wear and bringing his concepts to life.

“Vex” includes four outfits: one that shows the wearer is ready to go out for the night, one that is childlike, one that is masculine, and one that is wishful – a red bridal dress, reminiscent of “Beetlejuice.” His designs also remind him of his favorite song that his grandpa used to whistle.

“My grandpa got me to where I am today,” said Moreno-Martinez, who will graduate in December.

Tomczyk, a sophomore from Duluth, Minnesota, is inspired by older designers and tailoring styles and often finds styles by looking through his grandma ��. catalogs from the 1930s. Modern international designers he admires are Martin Margiela and Junya Watanabe.

Among Tomczyk ��. finely tailored suit jackets, he created an afterhood – a sweatshirt with a hood added to the garment after it is sewn – and a pair of cargo pants with patchwork to match the hoodie. Afterhoods were common in the 1930s and 1940s for winter sports.

Tomczyk will intern this summer as a tailor ��. apprentice with Martin Patrick 3, in Minneapolis.

Hosted by the WEAR Fashion Association student organization, WEAR is part of �� . Spring Showcase of student-centered events in April and May. Seniors also create their own design house, complete with brand names, marketing materials and business plans. Their collections will be on display at a trade show-style exhibit after the event in the MSC ballrooms, where attendees can meet the designers and see the garments up close.

Planning for this year ��. event started late last summer. Faculty encouraged underclassmen to submit work, a process new to the event, which previously showcased senior capstone collections and select works by juniors. Among the capstone collections, WEAR will feature 10 suits by underclassmen, tied to an assignment directed by Program Director Sarah Eileen Smith.

“WEAR Fashion Show is a fantastic opportunity for students to showcase their work in a professional setting as they jumpstart their careers. It ��. been inspiring to see new and seasoned students step up and take ownership of their creative growth this year,” said WEAR faculty adviser Bex Cermin.

“I’m especially impressed by the students who created complete two- to four-piece collections outside of any class project or assignment, just for this show. That kind of initiative and drive speaks volumes about the impact an upcoming, fashion-forward event can have on young artists and designers,” Cermin said.

Other �� fashion-focused events include Fashion Without Fabric. The sold-out show on April 12 featured 120 sculptured costume designs by 3D Design students, representing natural and man-made phenomena connected by this year ��. theme, “Phenomonie!”

A student and community resource

Computer science Professor Seth Berrier built the software and complex camera system and manages the lab.

“We’ve had four student projects in the PARSEC Lab since it opened. Anna ��. is the first communications/fashion design collaboration we’ve had,” he said.

Professional communications Professor Mitch Ogden, Mathsen ��. capstone mentor, thinks, “Anna ��. photogrammetry project is an inspiring example of Stout ��. polytechnic model and is a convergence of degree disciplines. Where else do you get to see fashion and apparel design, computer science and technical communication come together? This is the cross-disciplinary magic of the digital humanities.

“Our program is pushing the envelope for what we think of as ‘content’ and how we imagine putting that content into the world. Photogrammetry is a powerful approach. Already, clothing retailers are exploring moves towards 3D modeling of clothes,” Ogden added. “As technologies evolve and our consumer habits with them, there will be continued innovation in this field. Anna ��. project prepares her to be ready for those opportunities of the future.”

Berrier would like to make the lab portable to bring the cameras to clients and to various campus events, such as Fashion Without Fabric. He is also hoping the lab can be a part of the new Virtual Reality/Augmented Reality Space in development in the University Library.

The PARSEC Lab opened in 2022 and was made possible through a National Science Foundation grant. Internal and external partners have included the University Library Archives and the Dunn County Historical Society to capture artifacts using 3D imagery.

The Fab Lab is free to use for �� students. Training on laser cutters, 3D printers and leading-edge digital fabrication tools empowers students to design, prototype and build nearly anything they envision. Through memberships, it is available for community members to use after completion of the Introduction to Fab Lab Equipment training.

The fashion design and development program is part of the School of Art and Design, one of the largest public art schools in the Midwest. It also offers bachelor ��. degrees in animation and digital media; game design and development-art; graphic design and interactive media; illustration; industrial and product design; interior design; studio art; arts administration and entrepreneurship; and video production, as well as an M.F.A. in design. �� also has a new program in game and media studies.

Ann and John Graf, 1973 graduates, happy to ‘pay it forward’

Two alumni whose career paths were determined and lives shaped during their college days at University of Wisconsin-Stout are supporting future student success with one of the largest gifts in school history.

Ann and John Graf, residents of Tomahawk and Houston, Texas, have committed $3.5 million from their estate to the �� Foundation and Alumni Association. The Ann B. and John H. Graf Restricted Scholarship Endowment establishes full tuition scholarships for up to eight students a year.

“We think education is important and want to help students get a start in life without loads of debt,” Ann said.

“I benefited from the GI bill when I went to college,” said John, a veteran of the Vietnam War and a first-generation college student. “It ��. an opportunity to pay it forward.”

The Grafs graduated in 1973, Ann in apparel, textiles and design; and John in hotel and restaurant management. They were residents of South Hall, where they met. They married in 1975, after John also earned a master ��. in education from ��.

The eight Graf scholarships will be split between four students in Ann ��. program, now called fashion design and development; and four in John ��. program, now called hotel, restaurant and tourism management, plus two related programs, real estate property management; and golf enterprise management.

Along with tuition, eventually the endowment is expected to cover room and board expenses for scholarship recipients.

“We want these students to have the opportunity to further their education and have a chance to excel in an area they are passionate about,” Ann said.

The gift was announced Sept. 19 during the Foundation ��. annual Scholarship Reception on campus.

“The university is extremely grateful to John and Ann for their generous support. Their gift is the largest scholarship in university history and will make a significant impact in supporting our students by alleviating financial barriers and allowing them to focus on their polytechnic education,” Chancellor Katherine Frank said.

Already for the 2024-25 academic year, the Foundation has awarded a record $1.4 million in scholarships to 573 students, with additional awards planned.

In 2023-24, the Foundation gave out a then-record amount in scholarships, more than $1.3 million, to a record number of students, 681.

When the Foundation held its first scholarship fundraising campaign in 1962, two $100 scholarships were established. In total, nearly $20 million has been awarded the past 62 years.

Long careers in their degree fields

Ann, who grew up in suburban Chicago and learned to sew from her mother, enrolled in the apparel design program at ��. Her high school counselor recommended the program.

“I had never lived in a small town, so it was kind of change. I enjoyed the university community and being part of, I guess you could call it, a family and the exposure to all of the people I met,” Ann said.

She began her career in fabric stores and in retail before working for more than 20 years as an administrator with Quilts Inc., a national leader in commercial and trade quilt shows. Ann, who still works part time with Quilts Inc., also is a quilter.

John grew up in the Milwaukee area, where he worked at a café. In Vietnam, he continued in food service by directing two officers’ mess halls. After the war, he transferred from a Milwaukee Area Technical College culinary program to �� to prepare for a career in the food service industry.

“The �� program was a natural extension of my interest in food service,” John said.

After graduating, he taught at the University of Houston ��. Conrad N. Hilton hospitality school and managed food service in a campus hotel. He and Ann owned and operated a deli in Houston, and John also worked in the restaurant industry.

He eventually transitioned to the Houston school district, fifth largest in the U.S., as food service purchasing manager for 10 years and then as a consultant with Frenchy ��. Sausage of New Orleans.

The Grafs live in Wisconsin during the summer and in Houston during the winter.

Although the university catchphrase Stout Proud wasn't coined 60 years ago, three alumni from that era are showing their pride with major donations.

Katherine P. Frank

Katherine P. Frank became the eighth chancellor of the University of Wisconsin-Stout, after a distinguished career as an administrator and faculty member.

Before her appointment as chancellor, Chancellor Frank served from 2016 in two roles at Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash., as Provost and Vice President of Academic and Student Life and Vice President of Academic Innovation. She also held the rank of Professor of English.

From summer 2014 until spring 2016, she was Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Northern Kentucky University. Frank served as Dean of Humanities and Social Sciences at Indiana University East, Chair of English and Foreign Languages at Colorado State University-Pueblo, and a faculty member and administrator of programs involving student writing, faculty professional development, and student success.

Chancellor Frank, the first female leader of ��, grew up in Colorado and has a bachelor ��. degree in English from Bates College, Lewiston, Maine. She has master ��. and doctorate degrees in English from the University of Washington, Seattle. Frank ��. research interests include Romantic and Victorian English Literature, rhetoric and composition, the scholarship of teaching, and academic leadership.

“I am delighted to join ��,” Chancellor Frank said. “Throughout the search process, I became increasingly impressed by the high-quality work and creative thinking exhibited by faculty, staff, and students at ��, as well as the strong, reciprocal relationships among the university, community, and regional partners. Everyone demonstrated dedication to the university and exhibited true focus on ensuring student success.

“As beautifully stated by one alumna, ‘Stout is where you need to be.’ I could not agree more and am honored to join this exceptional community of educators, learners, partners, and friends.”

“Dr. Frank has demonstrated throughout her academic career that she is a strategic, dynamic leader,” said UW System President Ray Cross. “She handles challenges extremely well. Her visionary perspective on the future of �� will serve the institution and the state of Wisconsin very well.”

Chancellor Frank and her husband, Joe Dvorsky, live in Menomonie with their three rescue cats. She is an outdoor activities enthusiast, including running, road cycling and mountain biking, and has a love of animals, travel, and adventure.

The excitement of being a featured designer at Omaha Fashion Week isn’t lost on Bex Cermin: Going backstage, seeing her creations modeled on the runway, networking with other designers, investors and buyers.

The event, from Thursday to Sunday, Aug. 22-25, in Omaha, Neb., has become the fourth largest fashion week in the U.S., expected to draw more than 10,000 people viewing work from 36 designers.

Cermin ��. goal with her nature-inspired collection, ironically, will be to momentarily transport the crowd away from the bright lights and glamor. “Each look represents a moment in nature. I want the audience to feel like they can relate to that environment,” she said.

Cermin, who will present Friday, is a student in the Master of Fine Arts in design program at ��. She also teaches in the fashion design and development undergraduate program.

She will present seven looks and a total of 15 pieces of clothing she designed and created this summer in the Fryklund Hall Apparel Production Lab. The designs will feature patterns found in nature that she has gleaned from licensed photos. The designs, five for women and two for men, are named:

Falling Water
Mossy Overgrowth
Grandma ��. Garden
Winter Cloud.

The fashion show is a high-profile opportunity to reveal her expanded vision of how apparel design, principles of design and nature intersect.

The vision was born largely from a project on the biophilic effect she developed during a graduate research course with Professor Julie Peterson. The biophilic effect highlights humans’ affinity for nature and how representation of nature in work and living spaces can lower blood pressure, speed healing and more.

“It helps our well-being in the built environment,” Cermin said.

She conducted a research project, “Un.Real,” during the course. She surveyed 70 people on their reactions to three plants: one real, one that she knitted from textiles to look like a plant and another knitted plant that included bird sounds and scents.

Survey participants’ reactions to the third one were as strong, if not stronger, than the real plant, proving to Cermin that the biophilic effect can occur with direct and indirect forms of nature. Designs that bring the outside world in can be impactful.

Cermin has been working, including sewing, in the Apparel Production Lab at �� this summer to create her collection for the show. / ��

“To me, it was not about the real plant but the experience of nature. It inspired me to create this new collection and bring this research experience into apparel,” she said.

Cermin ��. collection will be modeled during the second half of Friday ��. event, for the featured or professional designers. The show also is a competition; if Cermin wins she could return to Omaha Fashion Week in the future as a headliner. The first half of the show will be for emerging designers.

Although Cermin is showcasing her apparel and hopes to continue to design high-end fashions, her creative work also could branch into a line of home décor. “I’m fascinated by the biophilic effect and how textiles can convey the story of a (geographic) area,” Cermin said.

She grew up in western Wisconsin, in St. Croix Falls, where her parents owned St. Croix Floral. She was married in one of their gardens. Being around nature “has always inspired me,” she said.

The M.F.A. program and her future

Cermin has received several grants to support her participation in Omaha Fashion Week, including two from the M.F.A. program and one from the event itself, to help pay for materials and travel.

The M.F.A., part of ��'s School of Art and Design, requires students to develop a focus area based on their creative interests. The cross-disciplinary approach helps students customize the program to their skillsets. “I love the program,” Cermin said, citing how the professors have supported her special interest area of fashion.

Erik Evensen, M.F.A. program director, said Cermin ��. “interdisciplinary creativity has impressed me since she first stepped foot into this program. Her work blends graphic design, illustration and textile sculpture with fashion and apparel.

“Our program allows students to connect a lot of dots with their graduate research, and she is constantly doing just that. She's a broad thinker and always has the full experience in mind: the initial concept, the execution, the context and the user experience,” Evensen said.

Cermin expects to finish her M.F.A. in May while continuing to teach. After graduating, she would like to teach full time in an apparel or fashion design program and continue to create.

“It ��. important for students to see their professors doing inspiring things,” said Cermin, who has studied at the London College of Fashion and New York Institute of Art & Design, interned at Centric Brands in New York and hopes to someday soon present her creations at New York Fashion Week. She has a bachelor ��. degree in apparel, merchandising and design from Iowa State University.

Erik A. Evensen

Erik Evensen is Professor of Design and program director of the B.F.A. in Illustration. He teaches studio courses in illustration, design drawing, concept art, graphic design, and typography, and graduate seminars in design research and design education. In 2022, he was recognized with the College of Arts and Human Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award.

He began his career as a graphic designer and illustrator in coastal New Hampshire and the greater Boston area. His comics industry credits include the “Ghostbusters” and “Back to the Future” licensed comic series from IDW Publishing, and the original graphic novels “The Beast of Wolfe ��. Bay” and the Xeric-winning “Gods of Asgard.” He is also the art director, game artist, and co-producer for the tabletop games “Marrying Mr. Darcy” and “Distilled.” His work has variously been featured in Graphic Design USA, The Washington Post, and The New York Times.

Erik has presented at and regularly reviews for academic conferences sponsored by AIGA, IDSA, MODE, M+DEV: Midwest Game Developers Conference, the Design and Emotion Society, IASDR, KEER, and the Global Polytechnic Summit. A student of Design Research pioneer Liz Sanders, his academic research on educational board game design is a featured case study in her textbook, “Convivial Toolbox: Generative Research for the Front End of Design.” His creative work with myth and folklore frequently yields citations, appearances, and speaking engagements about history, culture, and comparative literature.

Erik holds an M.F.A. in Design from Ohio State University, graduating Phi Kappa Phi. He received a B.A. in Studio Art from the University of New Hampshire, and a Post-baccalaureate Certificate from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.

As �� alum Kirby Hanson watched the Summer Olympics in Paris from her home in Vancouver, British Columbia, she and her family had a more personal reason to cheer on their nation ��. athletes.

Hanson, an apparel design and development 2007 graduate, is the technical development manager for lululemon athletic apparel company, the official outfitter of Team Canada, which includes more than 430 Olympians and Paralympians.

She was excited to see the apparel her team developed as Canada ��. athletes made their way to the medals podium, donning the Team Canada x lululemon Collection, complete with the traditional red and white maple leaf motif.

Hanson, originally from Isanti, Minn., believes �� gave her a strong foundation to jumpstart her career.

“The professors were engaging and pushed us to think outside the box and think past a sketch. As a visual learner, it was important for me to have hands-on projects and real-life scenarios to experience. That really set me up for success,” she said.

Hanson brought her talents to lululemon in 2015 when she started as a fit specialist in women ��. product. As well as helping manage the Team Canada line, she is the technical development manager for men ��. casual, overseeing a team of nine.

“What I love most is mentoring others, the collaboration and seeing our product come to life,” she said.

Developing apparel is a very collaborative process between designers, technical developers and pattern makers, Hanson added.

“We first understand the aesthetic and type of fit designers want, then we work with our vendors to make samples. We take a lot of care in our fittings to make sure we nail the balance and fit of every piece.

“At lululemon, we also want to make sure all our product is functional, so there is a lot of wear testing and feedback along the way to make sure we meet our guests’ expectations,” Hanson said.

Hanson loves the company culture, its priority of supporting the whole person – physically, mentally and socially – and how it puts employees first.

“Lululemon also has some big sustainability impact goals,” she said, as the company is working to reduce its environmental impact, including reducing wasted materials and partnering with leading sustainable materials innovators.

Hanson encourages current apparel students to “be a sponge, ask lots of questions, write things down and keep a growth mindset so that you are always learning. Learn from your mistakes, learn from things you did right and learn from others.”

Lululemon, based in Vancouver, has more than 710 stores and 38,000 employees around the world. This was the company ��. first Team Canada Summer Olympics collection. It previously designed the team ��. clothing for the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022.

�� . apparel design and development program, now fashion design and development, is part of the university ��. School of Art and Design. With more than 1,300 students, it is the largest public art and design school in the Upper Midwest.

SOAD offers 10 undergraduate degrees, including animation and digital media; game design and development; graphic design and interactive media; industrial and product design; interior design; studio art; arts administration and entrepreneurship; fashion design and development; video production; and, new this fall, illustration. It offers two master ��. programs in design; and design, entrepreneurship and sustainability.

The university ��. 2022-23 First Destination Outcomes survey reported that 100% of new fashion design graduates were either working within the industry with an average yearly salary of $53,000 or are continuing their education.

For two weeks in June, 118 area high school students stepped into campus labs at �� and learned what it ��. like to be a student at Wisconsin ��. ��.

In hands-on learning experiences led by faculty, they discovered career paths in science, technology, engineering, and art and design during �� . Summer STEAM Experience.

The weeklong camps highlight the value of creativity and critical thinking in genetics; graphic design and printmaking; fashion; film making; metalwork; video game design and other disciplines.

Students interested in the cellular makeup of the human body and the fashions that cover it joined Professor Mike Bessert in a Jarvis Hall Science Wing biology lab and Lecturer Sarah Eileen Smith in the Maker's Lab in Fryklund Hall.

In Bessert ��. Microbiology: Genetics and DNA Analysis camp, 19 students used a diverse array of lab technology to gain skillsets they can apply in biochemistry, forensics or health fields.

They collected DNA field specimens and used various techniques to copy and study DNA and discover how scientists solve problems within DNA.

“This camp gives the students a taste of what it ��. like to be a biology student here at Stout,” said Bessert, program director of P.S.M. conservation biology. “Similar to the Molecular Cell Biology college course, the goal is for them to become familiar with some of the most prominently used DNA extraction and quantifying techniques used in the field.”

In the Fashion Drawing and Draping camp with Smith, interim program director of fashion design and development, 10 students brought their fashion designs to life.

Their hands-on introduction to patternmaking included draping fabric on 3D dress forms and sketching professional fashion figures.

“They’re all doing great,” Smith said. “They’re doing exactly what our first-year fashion students practice in the Pattern Development course in their first week at Stout.”

Nearly 115 students entering grades six to eight will join the Junior STEAM Experience this summer, a series of specialized camps with hands-on experiences in Chain Making, Fashion Design Drawing, Storytelling and Video Production. Thirty-eight students will participate in a new Video Game Design Week.

Two steps closer to their careers in genetics and forensics

On the third day of camp, after collecting samples of their own hair follicles, Bessert walked his students through a two-step polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, optimization technique – a gradient thermal cycle to find the perfect temperature to view the strongest signal of DNA markers, or alleles, in the human genome.

They then used gel electrophoresis to visualize and analyze the DNA markers. At one end of the gel, an electric current is applied to pull DNA fragments through the gel. It is a technique the FBI uses to help identify people through genetic traits, Bessert said.

In another activity, Bessert and the students collected deer tick specimens from animals at the Dunn County Humane Society to see if the samples contained the borrelia bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

Bright, a Chippewa Falls junior, wants to be a geneticist. She discovered the concept of genealogy when she was 12, when she compared her and her sister's traits with their parents’ and noticed the difference in the color of their eyes.

Mitchell, a first year at Stanley-Boyd High School, became interested in forensic science watching TV with her mom and after completing a school project on genealogy.

Alyxandria Lunemann, a Bloomer High School senior, has always loved science. She was looking into future careers in chemistry “but it didn’t fit the description of what I had in mind,” she said.

Then when Lunemann talked with a professor who explained their research on the makeup of fruit flies and yeast and possible mutations in genes, she thought, “This is what I want to do. Mutational genetics is the study of the human genome and mutations within it, such as gigantism, dwarfism, albinism or sickle cell anemia,” she said.

“I feel that Stout ��. STEAM camp is a good representation of what it will be like researching in a genetics lab. I’m glad to be here.”

Fashion inspiration through exploration

During an exploratory draping time, Smith encouraged her students to play with fabric to see how it laid over the dress forms, how it can be shaped, and to experiment creating pleats and ruffles. Her only parameter for them was that their dress must be sleeveless or strapless.

While drawing their designs, Smith asked students to pay attention to and accentuate body shapes. They looked for inspiration in images in her slideshow presentations and on their phones, referring to current and classic fashion trends, movies, books, nature and even architecture.

“Be intentional with each aspect of your design, just as each aspect of architecture in a building or branch of a tree has its function,” she said.

Three of the students – Annella Wolbert, Samantha Anderson and Addison Bauste – will be first-year students this fall at Menomonie High School. They joined the fashion camp because they are inspired by the creative of clothing. This was their first time draping and drawing fashions.

While draping the 3D forms, Wolbert ��. inspiration was to go with the flow and see where the fabric led her. Anderson ��. design was inspired by Taylor Swift ��. Grammy outfit – a corset gown with a high leg slit and train.

Bauste ��. sketches, including a blue and pink gown with a heavy shoulder ruffle, were inspired by “The Summer I Turned Pretty” book series and a mix and match of outfits she saw online.

Wolbert and Anderson have sewed before, creating pillowcase dresses with their Girl Scouts troop for Little Dresses for Africa. They are working toward earning their Silver Award with their troop and have made 50 dresses in the last two years.

�� . STEAM camps, which attract students from around Wisconsin, are sponsored by the Menomonie and Chippewa Falls school districts, Parker, OEM Fabricators and Delta Fastener in partnership with Continuing Education and Conferences, a unit of Ed ucational Pathways and Outreach.

�� Athletics is offering multiple summer youth sports camps led by university coaches, staff and student athletes. Camps include basketball, football, gymnastics, soccer, softball, track, volleyball and dance.

Stout Adventures’ Youth Climbing League offers introductory activities, designed to empower kids ages 6 to 12. Experienced instructors lead activities for all skill levels. Two sessions will be held from Tuesday, June 11, to Wednesday, July 17; and Tuesday, July 23, to Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Collaboration across disciplines is just one part of the polytechnic experience students receive at ��.

For students in the game and fashion design programs, recent collaborations even crossed over into athletics, as they worked with members of the Blue Devils dance team on two projects.

The dance team ��. Head Coach Samantha Ziwicki worked with fashion design and development senior Reem Emerson on new costumes for a winter jazz routine.

Crossing over into Boogie Beyond

Reps and Swanson helped Tristen Rice, animation and digital media, Menomonie; Eric Gritzmacher, computer science, Hayward; Bryce VanDyke, game design and development-art, Hudson; Sarah Ziebarth, computer science and game design double major, Lake City, Minn.; and Sophia Burgess, game design, Fall Creek; along with nine other students on their creation of Boogie Beyond, a virtual reality rhythm game.

The students are looking forward to sharing Boogie Beyond at Stout Game Expo, western Wisconsin's largest game developers’ event. SGX will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall.

In the game, players act as investigators chasing down leads of “boogie fever” spreading throughout the city. They find themselves in the chaotic confines of Club Cosmic. Players groove their way through the mysterious nightclub looking for evidence and engaging in dance battles. They must uncover the figure behind the smoke and mirrors before they succumb to the fever themselves.

After meeting with the game design team to talk about the vibes they wanted for each character, Reps, a fashion design major from St. Charles, Minn., and Swanson, a manufacturing engineering and mechanical engineering double major from Becker, Minn., choreographed a song from the game ��. soundtrack, drawing inspiration from Just Dance.

“The �� dance team was instrumental. They not only developed multiple era-specific choreography for our characters, aiming for an early 1980s and late 1970s aesthetic and sound, but they also motion-captured the dance itself,” Ziebarth said. “The characters wouldn't have come to life nearly as much if it weren't for their talent.”

Swanson called the recording in the mo-cap studio “an experience to remember. We danced to the music, taking breaks between each part. Then the game design team worked their magic to integrate the dances into the game,” she said.

Following the Stout Game Expo, the SOAD Senior Show will feature capstone projects by nearly 120 graduating School of Art and Design seniors from 6 to 9 p.m., on Friday, May 3, in Applied Arts and Micheels Hall.

Dancewear leads to small business venture

Emerson, a freelance designer and bridal consultant in St. Paul, was contracted through University Athletics to design 20 custom, hand-sewn dance costumes for the Blue Devils.

The team wore the costumes for their winter jazz routine, choreographed by Ziwicki, who chose a soft but powerful composition, “Stand in the Light” by Jordan Smith, for the performance. She wanted the costumes to be light, airy and feminine.

“The process and steps it took to design, pattern and sew all the costumes was similar to how we design our collections within the fashion program. The team didn’t have a costume in light colors, so we chose a blue hue that would still represent the Blue Devils,” she said.

After ideations, Emerson created five garment prototypes and presented them to Ziwicki. They discussed revisions and changes in the applique décor and fabric choices to allow for body movement and eliminate gaping.

The final design included a high neckline and backstrap. The asymmetrical knee-length skirt allowed for two different looks and was made of stretch knit performance mesh. Applique and crystal rhinestone details and a hand-made, detachable applique clip on the waistband added a touch of winter grace.

Emerson learned much of her hand-sewing techniques while interning last summer at Beauty By Design, in Minneapolis.

“One thing that I did not expect when going into this project was that I would come out of it as a small business owner,” she said. “Taking on the dancewear project was much more than sewing beautiful costumes. It helped give me career options that I never knew I could have. It was a fantastic experience.”

Ten fashion design seniors, including Emerson, will model 45 pieces in their capstone clothing collections at the WEAR Fashion Show at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. Tickets are required and are available to purchase online.

WEAR is part of �� . Spring Showcase of student-centered events in April and May. It is hosted by the WEAR Fashion Association student organization.

Emerson, who also has a degree in industrial design from ��, will graduate on Saturday, May 4. She is interviewing for full-time positions where she can help companies bring ideas to life.

The Blue Devils dance team competed in the Dance Xtreme Americup Championship in Minneapolis in February, receiving many recognitions, including the Andrew Lawrence Sportsmanship award. They won second place in the collegiate contemporary division for Stand in the Light, which was recognized for its positive message and the performers’ stage presence.

The team will host tryouts on Saturday, April 20, and Sunday, April 21, in Johnson Fieldhouse. Tryouts are open to all 2024 high school graduates or older, and auditionees must be considering or committed to �� for fall 2024.

From bridalwear to social awareness- and golf-inspired attire, designs will be displayed after runway show

Modeling their senior capstone clothing collections on the runway is the culminating experience for fashion design and development students’ polytechnic education at ��.

For Reem Emerson, Emma Cinealis and Sofia Morin, who will graduate on Saturday, May 4, the WEAR Fashion Show is their opportunity to finally see their bridalwear, social awareness- and golf-inspired collections come to life.

WEAR will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. Tickets are required and are available to purchase online.

Ten seniors and one first-year student will show 45 outfits, modeled by the designers themselves, family, friends and alumni.

For their capstone, seniors each developed a four-look collection, creating their own design house, complete with brand names, marketing materials and business plans. Their collections will be on display at a trade show-style exhibit after the runway event in the MSC ballrooms, where attendees can meet the designers and see the garments up close.

Golden Age-inspired bridalwear

Emerson ��. capstone collection is a bridalwear line inspired by her trip to the Netherlands a few years ago, when she toured the historic home of the famous painter Rembrandt.

“I was awed by his realistic still-life work,” she said. “These paintings from the Dutch Golden Age are iconic for highlighting the subject with dramatic lighting and setting them against a completely black background. “In bridalwear, we take a lot of care to ensure the bride is the main focus of her wedding. So, I wanted to create wedding garments that stand out, demand attention and force everything surrounding the bride to fade to the background.”

Emerson, who also has a degree in industrial design from ��, learned much of her hand-sewing techniques while interning last summer at Beauty By Design, in Minneapolis. She put it all to the test in her bridalwear collection.

“I learned a lot of couture dressmaking techniques at my internship. My collection is handmade with professionalism. Each piece was hand-designed, patterned and crafted. No detail is by chance,” she said. “I am very excited to show the black wedding dress from my collection. I feel that this specific dress really embodies my inspiration and is unlike anything currently available on the bridalwear market.”

Emerson, of St. Paul, enjoys exploring textures, fabric and silhouettes. “I love thinking outside the box and get really excited when I come up with something I know is trend-forward and not yet on the market,” she said.

Outfits with a deeper meaning

Cinealis’ inspiration for her collection, Don’t Ask, Don't Tell, was based on the struggles she ��. faced with the public ��. reaction towards her sexuality. The purpose of her collection is to bring awareness to the way that society treats the lesbian community.

Her outfit “Concealment” represents the constant fear that she feels when coming out to new people, while the outfit “Oversexualization” represents how sexualized society makes the lesbian community out to be.

Her outfit “Isolation,” an exaggerated puffer coat, represents the isolating feeling of being different from everyone and the constant reminder from the public of how different she ��. made to feel. Cinealis loves the coat because it ��. fun and different from anything else she ��. done before.

But her favorite piece in her collection is “Hypermasculine,” a power suit that represents how society expects there to be a more masculine role in lesbian relationships.

“It ��. the most detailed outfit and the closest related to what I want to do outside of college. I think the audience will understand the deeper meaning of this outfit the most,” she said.

Cinealis, of Sheboygan, enjoys the freedom of the initial sketching process. “I love the trial and error of seeing what I want to feature on an outfit and what I want to keep out,” she said.

Fashion, on par

Morin, of Buffalo, Minn., has golfed most of her life and played on the �� Blue Devils team her first year. Her collection, Tradition, is inspired by the characters she observed and interacted with during her time on the course.

“I was interested in the history of American golf, the roles that we consistently have that other countries do not and the personalities of the people that hold the roles. Specifically, ‘The Golfer,’ ‘The Caddy,’ ‘The Cart Girl,’ ‘The Groundskeeper’ and ‘The Member's Wife,’” she said.

Her favorite piece is her addition of the “Tradition Duffle,” a clubhouse classic that pulls the theme of her collection together.

“The shape is classic, and the lettering is nostalgic. But the materials and hardware give it a more modern and refined look,” Morin said. “I am not sure if it will walk the runway, but it will be displayed at the exhibit before and after the show.”

Her favorite part of the creation process was seeing the collection go from ideas to physical pieces. “It is so fulfilling to see the looks come to life on the model and watch how they can become the character I put them in,” she said.

Designing their careers

Cinealis, Emerson and Morin believe the program, its professors and internships have prepared them for their careers.

“We have gotten to learn everything that we could possibly be doing in our careers from sketching, creating tech flats and tech packs, patterning, draping, to sewing and tailoring,” Cinealis said. “Our professors also help us a lot with perfecting our portfolios and resumes. Stout has enhanced my skills as a designer, expanded my network and fully prepared me for my career post-graduation.”

Cinealis and Morin were hired before graduation. Cinealis will be an assistant designer at Kohl's in Menomonee Falls. Her twin sister, Ava, is also graduating this spring with a degree in applied biochemistry and molecular biology.

Morin plans to move to New York to start her career with Steve Madden on the Anne Klein fashion accessories team and will continue to grow her own accessory brand on the side.

“I am so impressed with all the work our professors and leaders are doing to push the program forward and give it the attention it deserves to grow strong designers and industry leaders,” she said.

Emerson is a freelance designer and bridal consultant in St. Paul and is interviewing for full-time positions where she can help companies bring ideas to life.

Multiple research and design events in April, May open to the public

Hands-on research is a standard part of �� . Polytechnic Advantage. From day one, it ��. wrapped into students’ applied learning experiences.

For standout student researcher Ethan Kalin, hands-on research opportunities in his undergrad boosted his confidence in his knowledge, skillset and love for science in countless ways, he said.

Kalin, of St. Paul, will be one of nearly 300 undergraduate and graduate students presenting at Research Day, on Monday, April 29, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall and ballrooms.

The community is invited to meet with �� faculty, staff and students, as well as students from Chippewa Valley Technical College, as they present their research through more than 170 posters, exhibits, art and design displays, and oral and panel presentations.

Nearly 300 students will present at Research Day on Monday, April 29.

Research Day, part of the Stout Spring Showcase, special events in April and May, celebrates student research, creativity and innovation.

Polytechnic research showcase

Research Day hosts multiple events, including WiSys Quick Pitch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Quick Pitch is a three-minute, elevator-pitch-style competition open to undergraduate and graduate students in all programs.

The day also includes:

1 to 2:45 p.m.: Oral presentations
3 to 5:30 p.m.: Posters and exhibits
5:45 to 6:30 p.m.: Outstanding Researcher awards ceremony

“The research component allows for a broader educational experience for �� students,” said Anne Hoeltke, director of Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. “Students are able to explore the effects of applying new thought processes and experience the practical application of their project.

“This is one of the core foundations of being a polytechnic institution and is a high impact practice. It is also an opportunity for students to work with our wonderful faculty who can light the fire of curiosity in students and provide a lifetime of learning. Research is a powerful part of the educational experience and one we are proud to share with our students,” she said.

��'s Research Day is an annual showcase that underscores the applied learning and research of Wisconsin's polytechnic students.

The awards ceremony will recognize the following faculty and students:

Research Day is coordinated by �� . Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. The �� event is a qualifier for the state meet to be held July 24-26, at UW-Superior.

�� students and faculty will also present at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, April 8-11, in Long Beach, Calif. The 14 students will join more than 4,000 undergraduates from across the country, representing all disciplines with research ranging from urban stream restoration to the influence on first-generation college students to AI, mental health, civic knowledge and more.

Hands-on, cross-disciplinary research

Kalin will present three projects at Research Day, displaying his cross-disciplinary studies in environmental science, psychology and biology:

“Temporal Analysis of Toxin-Producing Cyanobacteria,” with mentor Nicole Hayes. Research focused on the relationship between blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, and the toxins it produces, particularly in lakes Menomin and Tainter in late summer.
“How Concussions Affect Balance,” with mentor Desiree Budd. Kalin analyzed data collected from college student athletes and observed how the contact levels of varying sports interact with the number of concussions experienced.
“Comparing Tissue Processing Methods Using Zebrafish Tissue,” with mentor Tiffany Hoage. Research of different tissue preparation methods allowed for analysis of parts of the fish body using a microscope to observe the creature ��. intricate design at the cellular level.

Kalin is an applied science senior with a concentration in biology and a minor in cognitive neuroscience. He presented his temporal analysis at Research in the Rotunda on March 6, at the state Capitol.

“I believe that these projects and the many others I've had the chance to work on throughout my career have bolstered my preparedness for jobs and graduate-level programs,” Kalin said.

Kalin received two grants through the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs for research exploring the MCA1 gene, with Hayes; and zebrafish tissue processing methods, with Hoage and co-researcher Natalie Mercill, a biology major at UW-Eau Claire. The Stout University Foundation supports many student research and dissemination projects through its internal grant program.

Cadaver Lab offers students unique perspective on inner workings of the human body

Hands-on approach to learning prepares university students for careers in medicine, science and applied research

“As faculty members, the very curiosity and passion that once launched our journey into research often takes a backseat amidst the demands of teaching and administrative responsibilities,” Budd said. “Then, a student like Ethan enters our classroom, full of curiosity and a passion for learning and exploration. In these moments, we are vividly reminded of the joy and wonder that initially propelled us into the realm of research.

“Thus, the involvement of undergraduates in research not only nurtures the development of critical thinking and analytical skills in students but also revitalizes the spirit of inquiry within the academic community.”

Kalin is among eight student volunteers in the university ��. Cadaver Lab, helping run tours for visiting high schools. As part of an independent project for his Honors College contract, he completed a dissection and then presentation of the central nervous system with Dr. Alex Hall in the Cadaver Lab, studying the brain from an individual with an Alzheimer ��. diagnosis.

“Getting to dissect and study a human brain with such a well-known neurological condition has been a huge steppingstone in my understanding of neural anatomy and further solidified my passion for research in neuroscience,” he said.

Kalin will graduate in May and is applying to graduate schools for a doctorate program in neural molecular biology, neuroscience or other related subjects.

Fashion, gaming and visual arts events

Fashion design and development students’ clothing collections will be featured at the WEAR Fashion Show, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall.

Juniors and seniors will show their design collections, modeled by the designers themselves, friends, family and alumni. Seniors will model their capstone projects – full collections, complete with brand names. The event is hosted by the WEAR Fashion Association student organization. Tickets are required for WEAR and are available to purchase online.

WEAR Fashion Show is on Saturday, April 27.

Join the fun at Stout Game Expo, western Wisconsin's largest game developers' event from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall and ballrooms.

SGX features the works of about 250 first-year to senior students in game design and development-art; and the game design concentration in computer science. They will share their tabletop games, board and card games, conventional video games, virtual reality experiences and rhythm games.

Fifteen game design students attended the Game Developers Conference and Independent Games Festival in San Francisco recently, with professors Andrew Williams and Karl Koehle. They also visited Ubisoft Studio, the Cartoon Art Museum, a vintage arcade at Fisherman's Wharf and attended a concert featuring Nintendo themes played by a string trio.

Human Sciences Day

Human Sciences Day, on Tuesday, April 16, is a professional development opportunity for students in the College of Arts and Human Sciences to explore career opportunities in nonprofit, government, public and private companies.

Students can meet with more than 25 employers, both local and out-of-state, for one-on-one interviews from 2 to 4 p.m., and attend the three employer panels.

Employers interested in participating may reach out to Abby Tengwall, with Career Services.

Concert performances

The Symphonic Singers, Chamber Choir and Devil Tones Acappella will present their concert Green Grass and Blue Water at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, at Our Savior ��. Lutheran Church, 910 E. 9th St., in Menomonie.

The Symphonic Band will present Stars and Sky at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall.

The Blue Devil Jazz Orchestra will present Jazz from Harvey at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at the historic Harvey Hall Theatre.

Spoken and written word presentations

The Communications Skills Showcase celebrates students’ work in first-year writing and public speaking classes. The showcase will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, in the Memorial Student Center ballrooms A and B. It is free and open to the public.

Awards will be given to the top three speakers, as chosen by a panel of judges. In its first year, the Andrea Deacon Writing Award will honor students for their essays. The award is named for Professor Andrea Deacon, who passed away from cancer in 2021. Deacon was the driving force behind the first-year writing program at ��.

Unspooled Film and Animation Festival

The Unspooled Film and Animation Festival will be held Thursday, May 9, to Saturday, May 11. The annual juried event features films and animations made by regional and international independent storytellers – professionals and students, alike. Films are screened at �� . historic Harvey Hall Theatre. The event also offers workshops and guest speakers.

Goodman focuses on ‘making the best product for the market’

With more than one million fishing licenses sold in Wisconsin in 2022, adding to the $2.3 billion industry in the state, �� alum Sara Goodman is helping to ensure the safety and comfort of those stepping out onto the ice this winter.

As a product development manager of apparel for Eskimo® Ice Fishing Gear, and other brands at Ardisam Inc., Goodman designs technical clothing for ice anglers and products that make time on the ice more enjoyable.

“I’m continually seeking out new technology and sources to strive to develop the best quality ice fishing products – from managing fabric and trim quality to fit, to finished product inspections and reviews,” said Goodman, who tests her own prototypes, including donning an UplyftTM technology suit and jumping in a pool to test its flotation.

“Technical clothing functions to keep you warm, dry and comfortable. It helps you move. It uses fabrics and trims that serve specific purposes, whether it is waterproof or sweat wicking. The designer also needs to design lines and engineer fit to enhance movement, not hinder it,” said Goodman, a 2006 apparel design and development graduate, now B.S. fashion and retail.

Ardisam, an innovator in outdoor products since 1960, is based in Cumberland, just an hour north of Goodman ��. hometown of Eau Claire.

Goodman ��. designs are inspired by feedback from pro staff, customers and co-workers, new technology in the industry, outerwear technical clothing for other winter activities, as well as nature and body shape.

“I just really enjoy designing outerwear, and it ��. hard to pick out a favorite. Our Superior system suit is one of the more detailed items. From drawing to selecting fabric and trims, it is definitely more of a full creative product development experience, and in some ways, more fulfilling,” she said.

Eskimo offers several outerwear and lifestyle apparel series, as well as pop-up and sled shelters, augers and accessories. Eskimo products, in signature red and shades of gray, can be found at most major sporting goods outlets.

Goodman began her career with Ardisam in 2017, and found the team to be immediately honest, humble, down to earth and hard-working. “Being able to start an ice fishing line of apparel at that type of company seemed to be a great fit for my experience and personality,” she said.

Working in the apparel industry for nearly 20 years, Goodman began her career as an assistant pattern-maker, has served as a merchandise product specialist, assistant product manager, technical designer and senior designer for various companies.

Goodman thinks �� . apparel program helped prepare her for the industry, both academically and mentally. Every day, she uses the fundamentals of quality assurance in stitch and seam selection, fittings, testing standards and more, to market research, line planning, illustration, industrial sewing and operations and pattern-making.

“The curriculum prepares you for most all aspects of working in the apparel industry,” she said.

“Mentally, you’re being pushed to your limit in design courses, and having professors and classmates critique your work prepares you for feedback and comments you get in fit sessions and sample reviews. You cannot take anything personally. It ��. about making the best product for the market and seeing consumers love your product,” she added.

Goodman encourages apparel, fashion and retail students and recent graduates who are building their careers to always be open-minded with a positive attitude.

“Attitude and teamwork go a long way,” she said. “Your internships and nonapparel courses matter a lot too – like accounting and management information systems. They can help you understand business as a whole and how to work in cross-functional teams. Soak up all the knowledge you can.”

Within �� . School of Management, the fashion and retail program offers three concentrations to match students’ career interests: fashion design and development; fashion marketing; and retail analytics.

Ellise Little had a “unique education path” at ��. She began her path as a B.F.A. industrial and product design student but transferred after her first year to a B.S. in retail and fashion.

After navigating the challenges of learning virtually during the pandemic, adapting to several course changes in her new program and experiencing success in two internships, Little earned her fashion and retail degree from �� on Dec. 16, along with 526 graduates.

“Ellise has always been a standout student in the classroom. She is inquisitive, thoughtful and highly motivated,” said lecturer and interim Program Director Sarah Eileen Smith. “She ��. always been eager to learn and dig into every course, which will pay off in spades for her in her future career. We are so proud of Ellise and all that she has accomplished.”

Little was hired before graduation. In January, she will move to North Carolina to be the merchandiser for Forsyth Country Club, in Winston-Salem.

How has your �� education changed you?

I did not come to �� to complete courses on the checklist. I came to learn deeply and broadly. My professors and learning community helped me to succeed.

I now am a designer. I am a merchandiser. I am a marketer. I am a team leader. I am a self-advocate. I am a communicator. I am a learner.

�� provided the learning to ensure success in my upcoming career. I have developed the skills necessary to excel in my field.

How did your internships prepare you to work in your field?

I had two internships in the golf industry and could not have had better and more different experiences.

My first internship was at Destination Kohler ��. Whistling Straits Golf Course, in Sheboygan. In this position, I gained experience in all aspects of the retail cycle. I coordinated the special orders and exchange process. I coordinated, developed and implemented visual displays for all new products based on foot traffic and product sections to maximize product turnover. I executed multiple purchase orders based on sales reports and guest requests.

My second was at a private golf club – Baltusrol, in New Jersey. I learned the importance of the highest quality customer service and how to connect with a community of members. It provided me with experiences in problem-solving, conflict resolution and comprehensive communication planning and execution to ensure the most positive experiences for guests. After work each day, I reflected on what went well and what could have gone better.

My goal is always to be at my best, so I may provide the best for guests.

I received an Outstanding Cooperative Education and Internship Program Student of the Year Award for my co-op at Whistling Straits.

What stands out about your �� experience?

As I prepare for graduation, I know I could not have gotten here without the support of my professors and their guidance in and outside of the classroom.

As a transfer student, it was difficult to jump in midprogram. Sarah Eileen Smith had the confidence in me to put me into higher level classes without the requisite background knowledge. Knowing I was a tenacious learner, she had the confidence and patience in me to bring me up to these classes. She has helped me navigate fashion design and construction classes I had no background in. She was excited and enthusiastic for me to expand on skills not specific to my concentration, but crucial to my field. This challenged my thinking and allowed me to perform at a higher level.

Dr. Jongeun Rhee has a reputation for being one of the most respected and intense professors in the program. Her expectations are high, and some find that intimidating. I found her to be incredibly knowledgeable and nurturing. She nurtured my intellectual curiosity, and she challenged me to produce at the highest possible level. Her expectations were sky-high, and I rose to them. She expanded the breadth of my learning when I needed more. Both Sarah Eileen Smith and Dr. Rhee supported me in taking the leap into the golf industry.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

In the industrial design program, I learned the fundamentals of 2D and 3D design, how to work with color, and the skills needed for clear and concise design drawing. The path towards graduation was clear from day one. If I followed steps A, B and C, I would graduate with a vast and comprehensive education in industrial design in four years.

When we were sent home in spring 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic, I lost the connection and drive towards my craft, when I lost access to the labs and studios on campus. The primary reason I chose Stout was its polytechnic teaching, so losing that hands-on learning was a big turning point for me.

After much deliberation, I decided to shift towards a path that felt more attainable in the online world. In the spring of 2021, I transferred to the fashion and retail program. I found that my background in design prepared me more for my fashion courses than I could not have expected.

While it was frustrating and discouraging to be faced with hoops to jump through, like courses that were dropped, or what felt like the short end of the stick, being placed in higher level courses without previous background, I can reflect on my college career and say that I have changed for the best.

I have built relationships with professors because of these hoops and enhanced my education ��. breadth because of it. I have taken numerous courses outside of my direct concentration and know I am prepared for my career.

How did your involvement on campus impact your experience?

I was on the �� cheer and stunt team for four years and was a captain for two years. A team without a coach is a difficult thing to navigate, especially in a world recovering from the aftermath of COVID. I saw tremendous improvement in not only my physical strength and endurance but, even more so, mentally. I am so grateful for the opportunities we as a team were given.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I am most proud of the leader and risk-taker I have become. I trust my knowledge and aim every day to keep growing as a designer and, more importantly, to never stop learning.
