Community invited to exhibitions, civic and literary conversations, film screenings and performances

As �� steps into spring semester and continues its Year of Design, community members are invited to myriad civic talks, film screenings and literary conversations, art and design exhibitions, and performing arts events for everyone on campus and throughout the community. Events are open to the public; some events require tickets.

Saturday, April 11, 7 p.m.: Fashion Without Fabric, the Midwest ��. premier unconventional fashion runway shows.
Saturday, May 2, 4 p.m.: WEAR Fashion Show, showcasing innovative capstone collections from fashion design and development seniors.

Furlong Gallery opens its spring 2026 schedule with the School of Art and Design Faculty Exhibit, on view through Saturday, March 6. This exhibit brings together a wide range of interdisciplinary work by more than 25 SOAD faculty artists and designers.

Gallery 209 rotates exhibits on a weekly basis. Located in the Applied Arts building on the second floor, exhibits are reserved for Senior Thesis Exhibitions, as well as master ��. in design students, design and fine art classes and student organizations. An Advanced Printmaking exhibition will be held in Gallery 209, April. 10-12, Destination Weekend.

The Library Art Lab, on the first floor of the Robert S. Swanson Library & Learning Center, showcases student artists, faculty and campus collaborations. Exhibitions include applied research, capstones, clubs and classwork. There are two exhibitions each semester.

Civic dialogue

�� . Center for Applied Ethics will host guest speaker J.P. Messina, professor of philosophy at Purdue University. Messina will present on “Workplace Censorship” from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, in the Memorial Student Center Ballroom A. He will discuss the legal environment that protects employers’ rights to fire employees, even while exercising freedoms guaranteed under the First Amendment. And if employer censorship becomes widespread, how discourse can suffer as people withhold their views from the public sphere.

Center for Applied Ethics

Our mission is to increase and enhance ethical conversations across the campus community.

The center also hosts Philosophers’ Cafés, informal, friendly conversations on contemporary issues. Meetings are open to all and are led by �� and UW-Eau Claire faculty. Upcoming conversations will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays, at Brewery Nønic in Menomonie:

The Center for Applied Ethics, Office of Student Opportunity & Excellence, and the Freedom of Expression Committee are hosting a series of events, “Enhancing Campus Culture: Free Expression and Civil Discourse,” funded by the Wisconsin Institute for Citizenship and Civil Dialogue and the Menard Center.

The non-partisan, non-ideological Menard Center is dedicated to the study and discussion of civil liberties and related institutions and innovations through scholarly inquiry, educational activities and community outreach.

Film screening and literary discussions

Continuing with Reading Across Campus’ focus on Jane Austen ��. “Pride and Prejudice,” the Literature Committee will host a film screening and discussion from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Feb. 18, in Harvey Hall Theatre. A short discussion led by professors Joan Navarre and Kristin Risley will follow the film.

Featured author Dasha Kelly, a former Wisconsin Poet Laureate, will present on her most recent anthology, “A Line Meant: A Collaborative Poetry Collection,” from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 20, in Harvey Hall Theatre. Hamilton has worked with incarcerated populations, helping groups write and publish poetry. Her talk is co-sponsored by the College of Arts & Human Sciences and will connect to the theme of “Helping Humanity Flourish.”

University Theatre

University Theatre will present “Something Rotten,” directed by Audric Buhr, at Harvey Hall Theatre. Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theater involves singing, dancing, and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world ��. very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

Musical performances

Stout Choirs, directed by Jean Enyeart and Jonathan Campbell, while Jerry Hui is on sabbatical: Saturday, April 25, 7 p.m., at Our Savior ��. Lutheran Church, 910 9th Street E., Menomonie. The spring choral program, “Questions,” will be a musical exploration of “why?” As graduates move on to build a better world, they will be faced with many uncertainties. Questions come in many forms: rhetorical, spiritual and intellectual. Fear, awe and wonder lead to different kinds of questions.
The Symphonic Band, directed by Erika Svanoe: Sunday, April 26, 2 p.m., in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. “Echoes of Eco” will feature music about our national parks, the wilderness and the great outdoors, including “Diamond Tide” by Viet Cuong, “Wilderness” by Cait Nishimura, and a music and video presentation of “National Park Suite” by Ryan Fraley. The concert will also feature a new piece by Svanoe titled “Winds Across the Water.”
Blue Devil Jazz Orchestra, directed by James Anderson: Saturday, May 2, 7 p.m., at Harvey Hall Theatre. Come hear, groove and tap your toes to jazz classics, such as Benny Goodman ��. “Sing, Sing, Sing!,” Charles Mingus’ “Fables of Faubus,” Glenn Miller ��. “Moonlight Serenade,” as well as some new favorites, too.

'Music in Motion' to feature pieces from 'The Polar Express,' classics like 'Sleigh Ride,' 'Sailing with Whales'

The comfort of holiday music will be paired with festive visual art at “Music in Motion,” presented by University of Wisconsin-Stout ��. Symphonic Band at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 7, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall.

The concert will feature music about various kinds of transportation, including a train ride with music from “The Polar Express,” an ocean voyage with Rossano Galante ��. “Sailing with Whales,” and a holiday favorite, “Sleigh Ride.”

Each musical piece will be paired with illustrations created by �� students, projected on the screens in the Great Hall. The illustrations are a visual representation of the music, based on the composers’ theme or musical expression.

Illustrations inspired by music

The collaboration was developed by symphony Director Erika Svanoe and Professor Erik Evensen, program director of B.F.A. in illustration. The series of images were produced by illustration, animation and digital media and graphic design and interactive media students in Evensen ��. Digital Illustration class.

Featured student artists include Erin McKinley, Jay Holtz, Jenna Good, Kaleigh Kahl, Renee Smith, and Harper Leighton, whose piece is a tribute to her grandfather, a WWII veteran and �� alum.

When Leighton first listened to “Moorside March,” images of planes flying over the English moors flashed through her head. As she listened, she thought of her Great Grandpa Lee Roy Bedsted, a member of the 546th Bombardment Squadron in the United States Air Force.

“My great grandpa was the top turret gunner and engineer of a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress airplane, 'Aces & Ates,'” Leighton said. The plane ��. name is reflected in her illustration. “On the last of his 28 combat missions, he was shot down over Germany. He spent 10 months as a prisoner of war, with three of those months on a 500-mile, forced march across northern Germany in the winter. If he hadn't survived his ordeal in WWII, I literally would not be here today. I am so thankful for his bravery and dedication, while serving this country.”

As a benefit of the GI Bill, Bedsted earned a Bachelor of Science in education from �� in 1950. He also met and married his wife, Beverly, a fellow student. He returned to �� to earn a master ��. in counseling in 1962.

“Lee Roy Bedsted was an incredibly kind and loving person, who did so much for his family and community. He also started a long family tradition of �� education; I will be the 11th person from my family to graduate from Stout,” said Leighton, an illustration junior from Excelsior, Minnesota.

McKinley, a GDIM senior from Little Falls, Minnesota, chose to illustrate “Sleigh Ride” because it brings her a sense of nostalgia and comfort. “My family would listen to the song when visiting our extended family for the holidays,” she said.

Her artwork captures the joy and excitement of the winter season, even in the midst of winter flurries, rosy cheeks and foggy breath. She was inspired by the color palettes of artist and animator Mary Blair, intentionally selecting bright colors.

“Winter can be dark and gloomy. I wanted to balance the cool gray tones of the sky with magenta and warm greens,” McKinley said. “There is a joy and energy to the song. The horses emulate the energy, movement and intensity of the song. It ��. like they are dancing.”

Listening to “Sailing With Whales,” Holtz felt a powerful forward movement, he said, “along with the story behind the song, talking about sailing out for whale watching, specifically orcas. Somewhat inspired by ‘Treasure Planet,’ it ��. mainly an original concept from my head.

"I like the highlights from the sunrise, and the form of the clouds. I hope others can feel the movement and power of the song,” added Holtz, an illustration junior from Rhinelander.

Introducing children to music

Seven members of the Symphonic Band performed for preschool students at the university ��. Child and Family Study Center recently in a short concert coordinated by Rachel Larson, an early childhood education major, with the help of Senior Instructional Specialist Marica Wolf, afternoon lead in the four-year-old classroom.

Larson, of Cameron, is in her second semester of lab experiences at the Child and Family Study Center, learning from the head teachers and teaching her own lessons, including playing her flute for the children. She also plays the alto saxophone and piano.

“I hope to grow my musical talents and use them in my future classroom,” she said. “I think sharing music with the community is important, as it creates a powerful sense of connection — both within the band and beyond it. It brings us together as performers, forming our own supportive circle, while also inviting others to experience and celebrate our talents.

“I believe it ��. especially meaningful to introduce music to children early on, helping them explore their interests in a warm, inclusive environment that fosters creativity, confidence and belonging. Erika Svanoe

Dr. Erika Svanoe (b. 1976) is a conductor and composer for wind band, known for her lyrical melodies, nods to classic literature, musical deconstruction, humor, and pastiche. Her works have been performed by "The President's Own" United States Marine Band, the United States Navy Band, the National Concert Band of America, featured at the Midwest Clinic, the American Bandmasters Association National Conference, and the Boston New Music Festival, and on Wisconsin Public Radio, in Bandworld's Top 100, and the Teaching Music Through Performance in Band series. Her first major work, The Haunted Carousel, won the 2014 NBA Young Band Composition Contest. Her first album, "The Music of Erika Svanoe," was recorded by Andrew Boysen, Jr. and the University of New Hampshire Wind Symphony, and released in 2022.

As a conductor, Dr. Svanoe has held residencies with the Manhattan School of Music, USAF Heritage of America Band, the Atlanta Freedom Bands, and numerous universities. She has held collegiate appointments at Augsburg University, Bemidji State University, and the University of New Hampshire. She is active as a guest conductor and clinician, appearing with high school, university, All-State and festival ensembles across the United States.

She earned a Doctor of Musical Arts in Conducting from The Ohio State University under Russel C. Mikkelson, where she served as conductor of the OSU Collegiate Winds, assistant conductor of the OSU Wind Symphony, and taught undergraduate conducting classes. Her DMA dissertation included a critical edition of Aaron Copland's El Salón México for wind ensemble. She holds a Master of Music in Wind Conducting from Oklahoma State University and a Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Wisconsin–Eau Claire.

Her music is published through Alfred Music, G.Schirmer/AMP, and self-published through Swan Maiden Press. She is a member of the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers (ASCAP). She is also the creator and publisher of Marrying Mr. Darcy, the Pride & Prejudice card game, and occasionally advocates and speaks on the topic of arts entrepreneurship, with appearances at the XOXO Festival and in a variety of gaming-related media. Originally from Whitewater, Wisconsin, she currently lives in Menomonie, WI with her husband, designer and graphic novelist Erik Evensen.

Erik A. Evensen

Erik Evensen is Professor of Design and program director of the B.F.A. in Illustration. He teaches studio courses in illustration, design drawing, concept art, graphic design, and typography, and graduate seminars in design research and design education. In 2022, he was recognized with the College of Arts and Human Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award.

He began his career as a graphic designer and illustrator in coastal New Hampshire and the greater Boston area. His comics industry credits include the “Ghostbusters” and “Back to the Future” licensed comic series from IDW Publishing, and the original graphic novels “The Beast of Wolfe ��. Bay” and the Xeric-winning “Gods of Asgard.” He is also the art director, game artist, and co-producer for the tabletop games “Marrying Mr. Darcy” and “Distilled.” His work has variously been featured in Graphic Design USA, The Washington Post, and The New York Times.

Erik has presented at and regularly reviews for academic conferences sponsored by AIGA, IDSA, MODE, M+DEV: Midwest Game Developers Conference, the Design and Emotion Society, IASDR, KEER, and the Global Polytechnic Summit. A student of Design Research pioneer Liz Sanders, his academic research on educational board game design is a featured case study in her textbook, “Convivial Toolbox: Generative Research for the Front End of Design.” His creative work with myth and folklore frequently yields citations, appearances, and speaking engagements about history, culture, and comparative literature.

Erik holds an M.F.A. in Design from Ohio State University, graduating Phi Kappa Phi. He received a B.A. in Studio Art from the University of New Hampshire, and a Post-baccalaureate Certificate from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University.

From exhibitions featuring graphic design, photography, light play and ceramics to philosophical and literary conversations, to performing arts, there are events for everyone on campus and throughout the community.

Thursday, Oct. 9, 1 p.m.: Cabot Executive-in-Residence keynote address, “Designed to Influence,” with Andrew Murphy, head of Corporate Engagement Strategy at Apple.

�� Professor Charles Matson Lume ��. Sabbatical Exhibition, “becoming I, I say You (for Martin Buber),” is in the North Gallery. An artist talk with Matson Lume will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 22.
School of Art & Design Visiting Artist, ceramist Hannah Niswonger, is in the South Gallery. Her exhibit “Didn’t I Used to Have a Sense of Humor?” brings together four installations: “Octopus ��. Garden,” “Cloud—Bird—Place,” “Poisonous & Carnivorous Dinnerware,” and “Conversations with My Father ��. Paintings.” Niswonger is a ceramicist from Massachusetts.
A closing reception for both artists will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, followed by an artist talk with Niswonger.

Dunn County-born artist and photographer Erinn Springer will be featured in the North Gallery. Springer now resides in Duluth, Minnesota.
Catalogtree, a multidisciplinary design collective based in the Netherlands, will be featured in the South Gallery.

Join game designer Erika Svanoe and illustrator Erik Evenson for a talk on their creation and collaboration of the popular Jane Austen card game “Marrying Mr. Darcy” from 5:45 to 7:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the Robert S. Swanson Library & Learning Center. A Q&A and game play will follow. See if you can win the game and the heart of Mr. Darcy.

Civic dialogue

A special event, “Banned Books Week: A Conversation with Dr. Samuel Cohen,” will be held from 4:15 to 5:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at Harvey Hall Theatre. Cohen is the associate chair of the department of English at University of Missouri. He will discuss his forthcoming book “Banning Books in America: Not a How-to.”

Comments will be offered by Menomonie Public Library Director Joleen Sterk. An audience Q&A will follow, moderated by Menard Center for the Study of Institutions & Innovation Director Afton Greco. The event will conclude with a Kahoot contest with prizes for students. The event is sponsored by the Menard Center with co-sponsors, the University Library; Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies; Honors College; the Literature Committee; the Center for Applied Ethics; and the Menomonie Public Library. Cohen ��. book will be published in February 2026.

The Center for Applied Ethics, Office of Student Opportunity & Excellence, and the Freedom of Expression Committee are hosting a series of events, “Enhancing Campus Culture: Free Expression and Civil Discourse,” funded by the Wisconsin Institute for Citizenship and Civil Dialogue and the Menard Center.

Forty to 60 students will participate in four discussion dinners over the course of the year. Each dinner will center around a controversial moral or political issue, with tables facilitated by faculty members Mitch Ogden, Cynthia Bland, Daniel Sinkovits, Lopa Basu, Alison Lukowski and Tina Lee.

Literary discussions

The Literature Committee will host its annual Faculty and Staff Creative Writing Reading from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 20, at the Raw Deal. The committee invites faculty and staff from all areas of the university to share their poetry or prose.

‘Sing, Slivered Tongue’: �� professor ��. book of poetry is a statement of courage, hope

Basu ��. anthology gathers 68 international voices to reflect on trauma, resolution

English Professor Lopamudra Basu will present on her book of poetry “Sing, Slivered Tongue” as part of the Chippewa Valley Book Festival at 6 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 24, at the Riverview Room at L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire and virtually. The hybrid event will include several contributing poets joining via Zoom. Books will be available for purchase at local bookstores this fall.

“Sing, Slivered Tongue” sheds light on the subject of trauma and gathers the voices of 68 women from various South Asian communities. “It is not just a litany of trauma. It is a statement of courage. It offers hope and is an attempt to find resolution,” Basu said. “Although the poets are from South Asia, their experiences are global experiences, and our intention is to create bridges.”

In addition to his sabbatical exhibit mentioned earlier, Matson Lume collaborated with three alumni and artists over his 2025-25 sabbatical to publish “at the fountain, at the fountain,” a free artists’ book that features their art and texts. Two book launches will be held this fall: one on Saturday, Oct. 4, 2 to 5 p.m., at FOGSTAND Gallery & Studio, in St. Paul, Minnesota; and another on Thursday, Nov. 6, 4 to 5:30 p.m., at North Shore Readers and Writers Festival at the Grand Marais Art Colony, Grand Marais, Minnesota.

Music will focus on the metaphor and power of color, featuring a variety of musical styles from romantic Renaissance madrigals to empowering spirituals.
The Symphonic Band, under Director Erika Svanoe, Sunday, Dec. 7, 2 p.m., in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. “Music in Motion” will feature music about various kinds of transportation, including songs from “The Polar Express” and Rossano Galante ��. “Sailing with Whales.”

Students gain ‘confidence to go global’ to join international community

Thirteen members of �� . Chamber Choir braved the Scandinavian winter in performances with international university singers to warm audiences’ hearts.

They partnered with choirs from Stockholm ��. KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Sweden ��. largest technical university, and Linköping University. They also held informal community performances.

Choral Director Jerry Hui hopes his students gain the confidence to go global and imagine themselves being part of the international community.

“Multiple performances of the same program for different audiences are an invaluable experience as singers. There are so many beautiful venues with wonderful acoustics that can easily be the highlight of our students’ time as choral singers,” he said.

Their first joint performance entitled “Come and Stay Awhile,” with the Royal Institute of Technology ��. Kongl. Teknologkören choir, was held at St. Johannes Kyrka, in Stockholm.

The spectacular church ��. steeple towers above neighboring buildings. Within, its Gothic Revival style displays ornamental arches and carving, high vaulted ceilings, lattice work and enormous stained-glass windows.

But where most expansive, stone structures create echoes during choral performance, St. Johannes produced a much clearer, dry sound. Among their songs, Chamber Choir sang two in traditional Swedish: “Limu, Limu, Lima,” arranged by Sofia Söderberg, and “Helan går,” arranged by Hui.

“I love the selection of music we sing and the people I sing with. We have built such a community within Chamber Choir that it makes coming together and singing so much more than a class to me,” said Denajah Smith, a human development and family studies senior from Minneapolis.

“Music is a form of expression. It helps us to navigate the world around us as well as share our history and culture with those who want to learn more about the world. Music has always provided me with a way to express myself that words alone never seemed to do justice.”

The choir was given a tour of RIT and passed the chemistry building – the spelling of chemistry in Swedish is with a “k,” meaning “kemi.”

Deep underground, Stockholm ��. metro system is called the world ��. longest art gallery. It ��. vibrant and alive with vast mosaics and murals, sculptures and art gardens. Commuters are given a bit of unexpected beauty in what could otherwise be a mundane venue.

The choir also visited the Vasa Museum, exhibiting the 17th-century Swedish warship. Built to defend the Baltic coast during the Thirty Years’ War, the Vasa sank on its maiden voyage in 1628, due to a major engineering failure, just two miles out of harbor. More than 300 years later, it was recovered in the 1950s and sits preserved in the museum.

In Linköping, the choir performed at St. Lars Kyrka. They also held a short concert for the municipal councilor and former mayor, Lars Vikinge, at City Hall.

The Chamber Choir attended a rehearsal of the Linköping University Male Voice Choir, a large tenor-bass ensemble, who performed the traditional drinking song “Down Among the Dead Men.”

“It was powerful to hear the combination of their voices. Most of the songs were not in English, so it was fun to finally understand one of the pieces they sang. Music is found everywhere and in everything. It has a way of bringing us all together, regardless of language barriers,” said Helen Wilson, a food science and technology sophomore from Hartford.

“Music holds power. Not only does music act as a way for us to express our emotions more deeply, but it also delivers that emotion to others. You have to feel the music in order to make the audience feel it too. There are no other feelings quite like the ones that can be felt from music,” she added.

A nearby coffee shop doubled as a greenhouse. Students sipped their warm drinks among the sprawling foliage. Large windows made it a great spot to people-watch those in the park.

The choir stopped at Babette ��. Kafferi for award-winning cinnamon rolls topped with crunchy sugar, and pain au chocolat – chocolate croissants.

Despite the winter wind, green ivy clings to a city building and above a bustling market. Many of the city fountains were empty because of the freezing temperatures, but on a warmer, sunny day, one small fountain flowed in a quiet park.

The choir held a joint performance at Campus Valla, the university center. After their performance, the choirs dined together at Ölstugan Tullen restaurant. They exchanged stories over a classic meal of Swedish meatballs with a creamy lingonberry sauce and buttery potatoes.

“When in Sweden, you have to try the Swedish meatballs at least once. I have never had lingonberries before. The tart and sweet lingonberries added a nice contrast to cut through the savory meatballs. The entire thing was very delicious,” Wilson said.

Wilson finds a deep connection between her major and participating in choir. “There is cultural diversity in both,” she said. “Every single culture around the world has their own food and their own music. I find that fascinating.”

The choir took nearly every kind of public transportation: a train, a tram, a bus, the metro, a taxi, and, most notably, a ferry in Stockholm, Wilson said.

“Since Stockholm comprises a few islands and is surrounded by water, part of their public transportation system includes a ferry. Despite the chilly day before, the wind and weather was not too bad on the boat, and it was super cool to get to see the edges of Stockholm from the water. It is astonishing how photogenic much of Sweden can be,” she added.

Smith encourages everyone to join a study abroad trip. “This is a life experience like no other that I have ever had, and I am grateful for the opportunity to go on such an amazing journey,” she said.

Brief Biography

Jerry (Chiwei) Hui has written a wide variety of music that ranges from serious concert art music to humorous choral arrangements. His music has been performed in the United States, Germany, France, Scotland, Indonesia, China, Taiwan, and Hong Kong by community choirs, campus ensembles, and professional groups. Described by critics as “seriously fun”, and with “accomplished contrapuntal texture.”, his composition has won prizes including the Robert Helps Prize 2008, and received commission that was featured at the World Saxophone Congress.

As a conductor, Dr. Hui has founded and directed various community choirs, church choirs, chamber ensembles and orchestras. At home in both early and contemporary music, he has performed often as baritone and countertenor, actively premiering works by fellow composers. Performances by his ensembles have been featured on Wisconsin Public Radio, Wisconsin Choral Directors Association conference, and the Fringe Series of Madison Early Music Festival. He is currently the director of choral activities at University of Wisconsin-Stout, assistant conductor at the Madison Early Music Festival, director of the Chippewa Valley Festival Choir, and artistic director of the Schola Cantorum of Eau Claire.

A native of Hong Kong, Jerry Hui received his DMA degree in music composition at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Hui's principal composition teachers include David Crumb, Stephen Dembski, Robert Kyr, Joel Naumann and Laura Schwendinger. His conducting teachers are Beverly Taylor, Sharon Paul, and Bruce Gladstone.

Fashion, gaming and design events rival industry exhibitions

Fashion design and development students’ clothing collections will be featured at the WEAR Fashion Show, at 4 p.m. on May 3, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. Tickets are on sale.

Juniors and seniors will show their design collections, modeled by the designers themselves, friends, family and alumni. Seniors will model their capstone projects – full collections, complete with brand names. The event is hosted by the WEAR Fashion Association student organization.

Fashion Without Fabric, to be held on April 12, is sold out. Overflow tickets are still available.

Join the fun at Stout Game Expo, western Wisconsin's largest game developers' event from 6 to 9 p.m. on May 8, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall and ballrooms.

SGX features the works of about 250 first-year to senior students in game design and development-art; and the game design concentration in computer science. They will share their tabletop games, board and card games, conventional video games, virtual reality experiences and rhythm games.

SOAD Senior Show features capstone projects by nearly 120 graduating School of Art and Design seniors, 6 to 9 p.m. on May 9. Meet with students and talk about their creative works in exhibits throughout Applied Arts and Micheels Hall.

Fine art sales by students will be held throughout the buildings. The Student Artist-in-Residence reception will be held in Furlong Gallery.

Design Wisconsin, May 16-18, celebrates Wisconsin's legacy of industrial design and fashion design innovation and impact on culture, commerce, community and brand. The event includes an open house of major Wisconsin and Minnesota design and manufacturer groups. In the past, these have included TREK, Milwaukee Tool, Kohler, Mercury Marine, Polaris, Fiskars, Oshkosh and more.

Polytechnic research showcase highlights societal impact

Research Day, on May 6, hosts multiple events, including WiSys Quick Pitch Competition from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Quick Pitch is a three-minute, elevator-pitch-style competition open to undergraduate and graduate students in all programs.

The community is invited to meet with �� faculty, staff and students, as well as students from Chippewa Valley Technical College, as they present their research through more than 150 posters, exhibits, art and design displays, and oral and panel presentations.

The day also includes:

1 to 2:45 p.m.: Innovative Insights, a faculty and student showcase of oral presentations
3 to 5 p.m.: Posters and exhibits, with researchers open for discussions
5:15 to 6 p.m.: Outstanding Researcher awards ceremony

Research Day

��'s Research Day is an annual showcase that underscores the applied learning and research of Wisconsin's polytechnic students.

An awards ceremony will recognize outstanding faculty and students across fields of study, nominated by their peers.

Research Day is coordinated by �� . Office of Research and Sponsored Programs.

�� student researchers also showcased their research at Wisconsin ��. Capitol Rotunda on April 2, during Research in the Rotunda, and students will present at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, April 7-9, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. They will join more than 4,000 undergraduates from across the country, representing all disciplines.

Student writers, artists invite community discussions

Join the launch of the 2025 issue of Prometheus for a reception and reading from authors and talk with artists, from 6 to 7:15 p.m. on April 11, in Harvey Hall Café.

The Communication Skills Showcase will begin at 6 p.m. on April 16, in the Memorial Student Center ballrooms. It is a celebration of student work, with presentations from first-year composition and communication courses, philosophy, advanced writing, and digital humanities, as well as an opportunity for audience members to interact with students and discuss their work.

The showcase will also recognize the finalists and the winners of the Andrea Deacon Writing Award, which recognizes excellence in first-year composition courses.

Author Peter Geye will present and read from his new novel, “A Lesser Light,” from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on April 21, at Harvey Hall Theatre. The novel will be released on April 15.

Journey down the rabbit hole in ‘Alice by Heart’

Students will perform “Alice by Heart” at Harvey Hall Theatre. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on April 10*, 11 and 12.

“Alice by Heart” is a musical set during World War II, in the rubble of the London Blitz. Alice Spencer ��. teenage life is turned upside down, when she and her friend Alfred are forced to take shelter in an underground tube station. When Alfred is quarantined, Alice encourages him to escape with her into their cherished book and journey down the rabbit hole to Wonderland.

* An accessible performance will be held on April 10, with a more informal atmosphere aimed to welcome those with sensory difficulties or autism. The performance will remain the same but with small adjustments. House lights will remain on, loud noises will be softened, and audience members are free to leave and re-enter.

The Symphonic Singers, Chamber Choir and Devil Tones Acappella will perform their concert Life on the World Scale at 7 p.m. on April 26, at Our Savior ��. Lutheran Church, 910 E. Ninth St., in Menomonie.

The Symphonic Band will perform Around the World at 2 p.m. on April 27, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall.

The Blue Devil Jazz Orchestra will perform at 7 p.m. on May 3, at Harvey Hall Theatre.

Unspooled welcomes international filmmakers to Menomonie

The Unspooled Film and Animation Festival is an annual juried event, featuring films and animations made by regional and international independent storytellers – professionals and students alike.

Films are screened at �� . historic Harvey Hall Theatre. The event also offers workshops and guest speakers, and awards in several categories.

From exhibits celebrating a lifetime of photography, illustrations to “Marvel” at and historical moments, to a musical inviting the audience to step into Wonderland in “Alice by Heart, concerts that transport listeners to outer space, film screenings of “February” and “The League,” and literary and civic conversations, there are arts events for everyone at �� this spring.

Many events are free and open to the public, and several will be held in conjunction with �� . Destination Weekend, Friday, April 11, to Sunday, April 13; and Spring Showcase in April and May.

Visual Arts

Furlong Gallery ��. spring season will open with an anticipated exhibit – Bill Wikrent: Capturing the Moment in the North Gallery; and artist and illustrator Matt Talbot in the South Gallery, on view through Saturday, March 1.

A reception for the exhibit Bill Wikrent: Capturing the Moment will be on Feb. 20, with a plaque unveiling ceremony at 5 p.m.

For 27 years, Wikrent worked with �� . Instructional Technology Services, contributing significantly to the university and surrounding area ��. visual history. This exhibition includes highlights of his campus work, as well as his personal photographs, highlighting his expertise and artistic voice. Wikrent passed away in April 2023. A reception will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 20, with a plaque unveiling ceremony at 5 p.m., in Micheels Hall Atrium.

Talbot is an illustrator and graphic designer from the seacoast area of New Hampshire. His clients include Marvel Studios, Sony, Mondo, Entertainment Weekly, Archie Comics, Fangoria and more. The exhibit includes both personal projects and client work. A meet and greet will begin at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 25, at Furlong, with an artist talk following at 6 p.m., in Applied Arts room 321.

Sunday, Feb. 2, to Sunday, March 30: The Library Art Lab, on the first floor of the University Library, will host Patient No More: People with Disabilities Securing Civil Rights. This traveling exhibit tells the stories behind a moment in history when protests across the country were held to have Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 signed into law, which ultimately made it illegal for any federally funded facilities or programs to discriminate against people with disabilities. It is a collaborative project with the university ��. Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Office, Disability Services and Involvement Center. A reception will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11.
Monday, March 10, to Wednesday, April 19: Associate Professor Daniel Atyim will showcase his sabbatical work at Furlong.
Monday, May 5, through September: The Student Artist-in-Residence Exhibition at Furlong will feature studio art majors Lily Smith and Ellie Eklof. A reception will be held during the School of Art and Design Show from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 9.
Rotating exhibits of student works will be in Gallery 209, the Student Gallery in the Applied Arts building on the second floor.

Students will perform “Alice by Heart,” led by Director Audric Buhr, at Harvey Hall Theatre. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on April 4, 5, 10*, 11 and 12; and 2 p.m. on April 6.

“Alice by Heart” is a musical that encourages everyone to celebrate the transformational power of the imagination, even in the harshest of times, and explores the poignancy of first love, loss and finding the courage to move forward.

Stout Choirs, under Director Jerry Hui, will present Life on the World Scale at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at Our Savior ��. Lutheran Church, 910 E. 9th St., in Menomonie. Join in a musical journey from the microcosmos to the cosmos and back. Whether it is in the microbes, the places we live in, in nature, or the universe, we see faces looking back as we reflect our life experiences, big or small.
The Symphonic Band, under Director Erika Svanoe, will perform Around the World at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 27, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. The concert will feature music celebrating different places, cultures and composers from around the world, including Minneapolis-based composer Samantha Hogan ��. new piece “A Tour of Minnesota,” which commemorates the state flag.
The Blue Devil Jazz Orchestra, under Director James Anderson, will perform at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 3, Harvey Hall Theater. Blast off into infinity and beyond with selections of Gustav Holst ��. “The Planets,” and hear classics like Frank Sinatra ��. “Come Fly with Me,” Hoagy Carmichael ��. “Stardust” and Dizzy Gilespie ��. “Manteca!”

Two film screenings and Q&As with the directors will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 4:

“February,” with director Nathan Deming and lead actor David Duran, 5 to 6:30 p.m., Harvey Hall Theater. “February,” filmed in Eau Claire, recently won multiple awards at the Wisconsin Film Festival. The event is hosted by the video production program and Video Production Club.
“The League,” with filmmaker Byron Motley, 7 to 9 p.m., Memorial Student Center Terrace. Directed by Sam Pollard, “The League” celebrates the dynamic journey of Negro League baseball's triumphs and challenges through the first half of the twentieth century. The event is hosted by �� Athletics and the Office of Student Opportunity & Excellence.

The Literature Committee will host a virtual talk and reading with Andrew Krivak, author of “The Bear,” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 5.

Author Peter Geye will present and read from his new novel, “A Lesser Light,” from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, at Harvey Hall Theater. The novel will be released on Monday, April 15.

�� Athletics and the EDI Office will host a screening of 'The League,' directed by Sam Pollard, on Feb. 4.

From community children ��. art exhibits to professional and up-and-coming artists, performing arts events that delve into the busy world of teenagers, concerts celebrating humanity and famous jazz musicians, and cultural, philosophical and literary conversations, there are arts events for everyone at �� this fall.

Visual arts

Furlong Gallery ��. fall season opened with the School of Art and Design Faculty Exhibition, which runs through Saturday, Oct. 26. More than 22 faculty are showcased, with artwork across multiple mediums.

The gallery has solo exhibits Monday, Nov. 4, to Saturday, Dec. 14 by Megan Jacobs in the North Gallery and alum Danny Saathoff in the South Gallery. An artists’ reception will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7.

The Student Artist-in-Residence recipients, Lily Smith and Ellie Eklof, will have an artist talk in the University Library at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, ending in a tour of the SAIR collection.

The third annual Arts Alive Community Arts Show will be held at the Raw Deal the entire month of November, featuring the artwork of K-12 students from the Menomonie school district. A culminating event will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 19, with an artists' meet and greet, refreshments and student awards.

Art education Program Director Ann Oberding-Carlisle works with preservice art educators and community art teachers. “My work with them has been a highlight of mine here at Stout. Building community is the core of what we do in preparing our students to participate in civic life while advocating for the arts,” she said.

The event is coordinated by the art education program, the visual and performing arts department and sponsored by Arts Integration Menomonie.

Arts Alive, a local children's art exhibit / Ann Oberding-Carlisle

Gallery 209, also known as the Student Gallery, rotates exhibits on a weekly basis. Located in the Applied Arts building on the second floor, this busy space is reserved for studio art majors to exhibit their Senior Thesis Exhibitions, as well as master ��. in design students, fine art and design classes and student organizations.

The Library Art Lab, on the first floor of the University Library, is a creative space to showcase student artists, faculty and campus collaborations. Exhibitions include research, capstones, clubs and classwork. There are two exhibitions each semester open for public viewing during library hours.

Chancellor Katherine Frank works with Furlong Gallery each year to receive current School of Art and Design student artwork for an exhibit in the Chancellor ��. Office. Students selected this year are Theodore Cerny, Bailey Grau, Ruby Hilber, Lauren Johnston, Meghan LeMay, Ella Loring, Logan Mentjes, Ann Rackliffe, Madison Skaggs and Tyler Tran. A private reception will be held this fall.

University Theatre

Students will perform “The Wolves,” led by Director Audric Buhr, at Harvey Hall Theatre. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on Nov. 7*, 8 and 9; and 2 p.m. on Nov. 10.

“The Wolves” is a one-act play about a girls’ indoor soccer team as they navigate big questions and wage tiny battles with all the vim and vigor of a pack of adolescent warriors. It ��. a portrait of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness for nine American girls who just want to score some goals.

The play has received multiple awards and was a finalist for the 2017 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Theater students will collaborate with the Blue Devil women ��. and men ��. soccer teams as part of the play.

* An accessible performance will be held on Nov. 7, with a more informal atmosphere aimed to welcome those with sensory difficulties or autism. The performance will remain the same but with small adjustments. House lights will remain on, loud noises will be softened and audience members are free to leave and re-enter.

The Blue Devil Jazz Orchestra / ��

Concert performances

The Blue Devil Jazz Orchestra, under Director James Anderson, will perform Jazz from the Legends at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 16, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. Groove to some of the most exciting music to come out of the jazz genre with selections made famous by Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington and more.
Stout Choirs, under Director Jerry Hui, will present The World on a Human Scale at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in the Memorial Student Center ballrooms. The concert focuses on the experience of growing up. How do we understand the world around us as we leave adolescence for adulthood? What does it mean to be yourself? Or build a life with someone? How do we grow old? Songs are from a variety of genres: love, life milestones, memories, moving on and celebration.
The Symphonic Band, under Director Erika Svanoe, will present Winter ��. Colors at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 8, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. The concert will feature colorful and wintery favorites, as well as the world premiere of a new piece by Minneapolis-based composer Clare Howard, titled “Over the Blue and Green.” The piece explores the experience of astronauts awed by the sight of Earth from space.

Literary and cultural events

The Literature Committee will host a faculty panel discussion on “Banning Books” from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 24, in the University Library second floor. Panelists will include Lopa Basu, professor of English and chair of the committee; Xan Bozzo, assistant professor of philosophy and director of the Center for Applied Ethics; and Rickie Ann Legleitner, associate professor and adviser for Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies and interim executive director of Inclusive Excellence.

The panel is co-sponsored by the Literature Committee; Menard Center for the Study of Institutions and Innovation; University Library; Center for Applied Ethics; Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies; Honors College; and Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.

The Literature Committee will host a Spanish film screening of Relatos Salvajes (Wild Tales) at 5:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in Applied Arts room 210. Written and directed by Damián Szifrón, this dark comedy includes six stories of absurd and violent revenge set in Buenos Aires and the rural landscapes of northern Argentina. It stars Ricardo Darín, one of the most celebrated actors of Argentine cinema. The screening is made possible by a grant from the Provost ��. Office.

The committee will also host its annual Faculty and Staff Creative Writing reading in the late fall.

�� . annual International Night, hosted by the Office of International Education and the International Club student organization, is from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 21, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. The cultural expo is free and open to the public. It is an opportunity to connect with international students and learn about their countries and cultures.

Events are in conjunction with International Education Week, Monday, Nov. 18, to Friday, Nov. 22, a joint initiative of the U.S. Department of State and the U.S. Department of Education to promote programs that prepare Americans for a global environment and attract future leaders from abroad to study, learn and exchange experiences.

Center for Applied Ethics' Philosophers' Cafe conversation / ��

The Center for Applied Ethics will also host a lecture with Anne Coughlin, the Lewis F. Powell, Jr., Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law.

Coughlin will lead a discussion on Demystifying Dobbs, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 15, in the Memorial Student Center Cedar/Maple rooms. The aim of this lecture is to make the Dobbs judgment accessible to non-lawyers and lawyers alike, to evaluate this landmark decision for themselves.

"In Dobbs v. Jackson Women ��. Health Organization (2022), the United States Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade (1973) and held that the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution does not protect the right to an abortion," Bozzo explained. "The Dobbs Court concluded its analysis by announcing that it was time to return the contentious issue of abortion to state legislatures. Since Dobbs dropped, legislatures in many states have enacted or revived bans on abortion care, while lawmakers in other states have moved to codify Roe or even to enshrine it in state constitutional provisions. To put these and related developments in perspective, it is essential to understand the legal questions that were presented in Dobbs and to evaluate the legal methodology that the Court used to resolve those questions."

Coughlin also is co-director of UVA ��. Sound Justice Lab, an anti-racist gender justice collaborative. She clerked for the Honorable Jon O. Newman of the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit and for the Honorable Lewis F. Powell, Jr. of the United States Supreme Court.

Multiple research and design events in April, May open to the public

Hands-on research is a standard part of �� . Polytechnic Advantage. From day one, it ��. wrapped into students’ applied learning experiences.

For standout student researcher Ethan Kalin, hands-on research opportunities in his undergrad boosted his confidence in his knowledge, skillset and love for science in countless ways, he said.

Kalin, of St. Paul, will be one of nearly 300 undergraduate and graduate students presenting at Research Day, on Monday, April 29, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall and ballrooms.

The community is invited to meet with �� faculty, staff and students, as well as students from Chippewa Valley Technical College, as they present their research through more than 170 posters, exhibits, art and design displays, and oral and panel presentations.

Nearly 300 students will present at Research Day on Monday, April 29.

Polytechnic research showcase

Research Day hosts multiple events, including WiSys Quick Pitch from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Quick Pitch is a three-minute, elevator-pitch-style competition open to undergraduate and graduate students in all programs.

The day also includes:

1 to 2:45 p.m.: Oral presentations
3 to 5:30 p.m.: Posters and exhibits
5:45 to 6:30 p.m.: Outstanding Researcher awards ceremony

“The research component allows for a broader educational experience for �� students,” said Anne Hoeltke, director of Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. “Students are able to explore the effects of applying new thought processes and experience the practical application of their project.

“This is one of the core foundations of being a polytechnic institution and is a high impact practice. It is also an opportunity for students to work with our wonderful faculty who can light the fire of curiosity in students and provide a lifetime of learning. Research is a powerful part of the educational experience and one we are proud to share with our students,” she said.

��'s Research Day is an annual showcase that underscores the applied learning and research of Wisconsin's polytechnic students.

Research Day is coordinated by �� . Office of Research and Sponsored Programs. The �� event is a qualifier for the state meet to be held July 24-26, at UW-Superior.

�� students and faculty will also present at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research, April 8-11, in Long Beach, Calif. The 14 students will join more than 4,000 undergraduates from across the country, representing all disciplines with research ranging from urban stream restoration to the influence on first-generation college students to AI, mental health, civic knowledge and more.

Hands-on, cross-disciplinary research

Kalin will present three projects at Research Day, displaying his cross-disciplinary studies in environmental science, psychology and biology:

“Temporal Analysis of Toxin-Producing Cyanobacteria,” with mentor Nicole Hayes. Research focused on the relationship between blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, and the toxins it produces, particularly in lakes Menomin and Tainter in late summer.
“How Concussions Affect Balance,” with mentor Desiree Budd. Kalin analyzed data collected from college student athletes and observed how the contact levels of varying sports interact with the number of concussions experienced.
“Comparing Tissue Processing Methods Using Zebrafish Tissue,” with mentor Tiffany Hoage. Research of different tissue preparation methods allowed for analysis of parts of the fish body using a microscope to observe the creature ��. intricate design at the cellular level.

Kalin is an applied science senior with a concentration in biology and a minor in cognitive neuroscience. He presented his temporal analysis at Research in the Rotunda on March 6, at the state Capitol.

“I believe that these projects and the many others I've had the chance to work on throughout my career have bolstered my preparedness for jobs and graduate-level programs,” Kalin said.

Kalin received two grants through the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs for research exploring the MCA1 gene, with Hayes; and zebrafish tissue processing methods, with Hoage and co-researcher Natalie Mercill, a biology major at UW-Eau Claire. The Stout University Foundation supports many student research and dissemination projects through its internal grant program.

Cadaver Lab offers students unique perspective on inner workings of the human body

Hands-on approach to learning prepares university students for careers in medicine, science and applied research

“As faculty members, the very curiosity and passion that once launched our journey into research often takes a backseat amidst the demands of teaching and administrative responsibilities,” Budd said. “Then, a student like Ethan enters our classroom, full of curiosity and a passion for learning and exploration. In these moments, we are vividly reminded of the joy and wonder that initially propelled us into the realm of research.

“Thus, the involvement of undergraduates in research not only nurtures the development of critical thinking and analytical skills in students but also revitalizes the spirit of inquiry within the academic community.”

Kalin is among eight student volunteers in the university ��. Cadaver Lab, helping run tours for visiting high schools. As part of an independent project for his Honors College contract, he completed a dissection and then presentation of the central nervous system with Dr. Alex Hall in the Cadaver Lab, studying the brain from an individual with an Alzheimer ��. diagnosis.

“Getting to dissect and study a human brain with such a well-known neurological condition has been a huge steppingstone in my understanding of neural anatomy and further solidified my passion for research in neuroscience,” he said.

Kalin will graduate in May and is applying to graduate schools for a doctorate program in neural molecular biology, neuroscience or other related subjects.

Fashion design and development students’ clothing collections will be featured at the WEAR Fashion Show, at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall.

Join the fun at Stout Game Expo, western Wisconsin's largest game developers' event from 6 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, May 2, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall and ballrooms.

Fifteen game design students attended the Game Developers Conference and Independent Games Festival in San Francisco recently, with professors Andrew Williams and Karl Koehle. They also visited Ubisoft Studio, the Cartoon Art Museum, a vintage arcade at Fisherman's Wharf and attended a concert featuring Nintendo themes played by a string trio.

Human Sciences Day

Human Sciences Day, on Tuesday, April 16, is a professional development opportunity for students in the College of Arts and Human Sciences to explore career opportunities in nonprofit, government, public and private companies.

Students can meet with more than 25 employers, both local and out-of-state, for one-on-one interviews from 2 to 4 p.m., and attend the three employer panels.

Spoken and written word presentations

The Communications Skills Showcase celebrates students’ work in first-year writing and public speaking classes. The showcase will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, in the Memorial Student Center ballrooms A and B. It is free and open to the public.

Awards will be given to the top three speakers, as chosen by a panel of judges. In its first year, the Andrea Deacon Writing Award will honor students for their essays. The award is named for Professor Andrea Deacon, who passed away from cancer in 2021. Deacon was the driving force behind the first-year writing program at ��.

Unspooled Film and Animation Festival

The Unspooled Film and Animation Festival will be held Thursday, May 9, to Saturday, May 11. The annual juried event features films and animations made by regional and international independent storytellers – professionals and students, alike. Films are screened at �� . historic Harvey Hall Theatre. The event also offers workshops and guest speakers.

Audiences at �� . Harvey Hall Theatre will soon enter the flashback of Vietnam veteran Marine Corporal Eddie Birdlace, as he relives the eve of his deployment.

University Theatre students will perform the award-winning musical “Dogfight.” Set in San Francisco on Nov. 21, 1963, Birdlace and other young Marines plan to celebrate their last night of freedom with a bit of debauchery and play a game they call a “dogfight.”

But when Birdlace meets Rose Fenny, an awkward and idealistic waitress whom he enlists to win a cruel bet with his fellow recruits, she rewrites the rules of the game and teaches him the power of love and compassion.

“This performance is different. It ��. a beautiful love story and musically challenging,” said Director Audric Buhr. “It ��. dramatically different than what we’ve done in the past year since University Theatre reopened in spring 2023.”

“Dogfight” is also unique as its theme is somewhat true, Buhr said. Birdlace ��. flashback offers audiences a glimpse into posttraumatic stress disorder and how it can affect veterans.

Tickets are free for active or retired military members, and are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors. Tickets are available at uwstout.universitytickets.com:

A tale of ambition, emotion and self-discovery

The lead role of Birdlace is played by Quincy Aaron, who plans to sacrifice his curls and shave his head for the performance of the Marine corporal. He believes that “‘Dogfight’ gives a deeper perspective on U.S. history, especially of a time period not many discuss in my generation.”

Aaron, a game design and development sophomore from Farmington, Minn., finds Birdlace to be a compelling character. “He has this internal struggle that is centered around the dichotomy between who he is and who he wants to be. Eddie wants to be blissfully ignorant but can’t help but feel a sense of responsibility for his behavior,” he said.

Aaron thinks it ��. important to connect his personal experiences to the characters he portrays on stage and channels his own emotional moments into his performance.

“Eddie is quite the hot-headed guy, but he also experiences a level of hurt that few can relate to. The pain that he experiences, especially at the end of the production, is so nuanced,” he said.

Cast member Steven Lee was a corporal in the Marine Corps and served from April 2017 to April 2022. He plays the role of Fector, one of Birdlace ��. fellow Marines involved in the bet.

“For me, Fector was a small enough role to juggle my work-life balance and still find a way to be a part of this amazing show,” said Lee, a computer science sophomore from Oceanside, Calif.

The Marines were told the Vietnam War would be quick to prevent the spread of communism across Southeast Asia, Lee explained.

“Many were drafted and fewer returned. The beginning of the show quickly sets the tone for that,” he said. “However, during this story, you get the perspective of young Marines hoping to make a big impact in the world – with a do-or-die attitude. Their potential last night on American soil really sells the idea of enthusiastic, unapologetic men who were willing to die for their country.

“I think we often forget that the people who go into war are young and ambitious adults, many who just graduated high school. I want to bring that young, abrasive mindset of the young men who were sent off to war in Vietnam spending their last days stateside,” Lee said.

Birdlace ��. potential last night on American soil is spent with Rose, played by Kat Schlauderaff, a senior in digital marketing technology from Chaska, Minn.

“Rose has dreams as big as the sky. I relate a lot to Rose,” Schlauderaff said. “We’ve both had sheltered, awkward upbringings but carry lofty ambitions. Drawing from my own life, it ��. easy to slip into character, especially as Rose is on the cusp of major growth and, just like me, ready to ‘spread her wings.’”

She encourages people to see the show because it ��. a “beautiful tale of self-discovery and change. On the surface, it ��. a heart-warming and inelegant love story. But dive deeper, and you’ll find a truly relatable narrative. In our daily lives, many of us sense there ��. something more, just out of our grasp. The musical is not just entertainment; it ��. an invitation to embrace the unknown and dream big.”

Lee is reminded of the saying “Once a Marine, always a Marine.”

“For many still in the service, it ��. a big old joke,” he said. “But post service, I find value in it. Meeting veterans, I find we all carry the same core values and share fond memories of boot camp, deployments and our times spent training. We have a shared collective experience.

“I just want to thank all of the veterans who will be attending this show for their services. They are not unheard in their struggles, and we are all brothers and sisters, even after the ranks have been taken off. I hope they look forward to seeing this show and can be reminded through ‘Dogfight’ of the young, head-first attitude when they enlisted in the service,” Lee said.

Connecting to the characters’ mental health

To help the student cast and crew connect to the experiences of veterans, including those with posttraumatic stress disorder and other mental health topics, Buhr invited M.S. clinical mental health counseling professors John Klem and Julie Bates-Maves and Dunn County Veteran Services staff to rehearsal.

PTSD symptoms are an indicator that a person has encountered serious stress, Bates-Maves explained.

“When in front of the threat, the responses make sense – the body is responding in order to survive,” she said. “But when the threat is no longer present and the survival response remains active, it causes trouble. The brain continues to operate in the past, protecting itself from the threats it encountered, even though they no longer exist in the present. Responses become mismatched to the moment they’re in.

“Wonderfully, PTSD is very treatable, and there is great cause for hope. Just as the brain learns to notice and protect from threats, it can learn to better assess the difference between the past and present, real versus perceived threats. Help is available and effective,” Bates-Maves said.

Lee believes the effects of the Vietnam War continued for many years after its resolution. “Many veterans who emerged from the Vietnam War were not treated well, and we need to tell that story because it's a reminder that many complicated and unexpected events took place during both the Cold War and Vietnam.

“The world these men returned to was not the same as the one they left. People often remember those with PTSD as broken, unable to reintegrate back into society. But we hope to show all sides of these Marines, from boot camp to the end of the war,” Lee said.

“Posttraumatic stress disorder is the invisible challenge many veterans deal with,” said Greg Quinn, Dunn County Veteran Service officer. “It can be difficult for family and loved ones to understand because one doesn't wear a cast or brace for the injury.

“A better understanding of how trauma affects an individual can allow a family to support them through the challenges. Many of our heroes silently deal with trauma through isolation and avoidance. Showing support and understanding can help the healing. The stronger the family support, the better outcomes when dealing with trauma,” Quinn said.

ROTC cadets to take helicopter from �� to Fort McCoy

As of Tuesday, April 9, the Blackhawk helicopter landing scheduled for Thursday, April 11, has been canceled. However, a landing may be scheduled in the fall. Read on to see what the future experience may bring for �� ROTC cadets.

The Wisconsin Army National Guard will land a Blackhawk helicopter on campus to transport a group of 20 �� Reserve Officers' Training Corps cadets to Fort McCoy, a U.S. Army Reserve installation, for a spring field training exercise.

The public is welcome to watch the helicopter land at approximately 9 a.m. on Thursday, April 11, behind the �� softball field, 1606 S. Broadway St., Menomonie.

�� Reserve Officers' Training Corps cadets’ training exercise at Fort McCoy, between Sparta and Tomah, will involve land navigation, maneuvering soldiers to accomplish set missions and testing leadership skills under pressure. It will help prepare cadets for upcoming training at Fort Knox, Ky.

SFC Nicholas Manor, military science instructor and Wisconsin National Guard recruiter and liaison, has ridden in a Blackhawk twice in his career. “They were both awesome experiences and like nothing you have ever done before. This will be the first time cadets will be picked up from �� and taken anywhere, so it is an awesome event and experience for these young soldiers.

“This is just one of the amazing things people can do when they serve in the Wisconsin Army National Guard. Opportunities are endless. Go Guard,” Manor said.

Helicopter flights can be canceled the day of for many reasons, he added. “So, don't get your hope too high until you hear them coming.”

The Landing Authorization Agreement, sent to the deputy chief of staff for Aviation and Safety, was released by the approving officer, Chancellor Katherine Frank.

The Wisconsin Army National Guard landed a UH-60 helicopter on campus for a static display before the Military Appreciation football game in October 2023. The crew met with students and community members.

A Military and Veterans Career Expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursday, March 28, at the Memorial Student Center. Hosted by �� . Career Services and Veteran Services, the expo focuses on addressing employment challenges, navigating resources, and connecting veteran and military students with employers who value their experience. All student veterans are encouraged to attend this networking event.

From performing arts events featuring themes of nature and an award-winning musical teaching the power of love and compassion to art exhibitions and philosophical and literary conversations, there are arts and humanities events for everyone at �� this spring. Some monthly highlights include:

Students will perform the award-winning musical “Dogfight,” led by Director Audric Buhr, at Harvey Hall Theatre. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. on April 5, 6, 11, 12 and 13; and 2 p.m. on April 7.

Lutheran Church, 910 E. 9th St., in Menomonie. The program celebrates Earth Week with music that praises the beauty of nature and calls for the protection of the environment.

�� Blue Devil Jazz Orchestra / Aaron Durst

The Symphonic Band will present Stars and Sky at 2 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. They will perform new compositions, movie and television soundtracks, with a special visual presentation.

The Blue Devil Jazz Orchestra will present Jazz from Harvey at 7 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at the historic Harvey Hall Theatre. Both groups are led by Director Aaron Durst. Music will include big band favorites, Latin dance styles, and rock/fusion pieces for listeners of jazz from every era.

The School of Art and Design Faculty Exhibition runs through Friday, Feb. 23, and showcases the works of interdisciplinary artists and designers.
From Monday, March 4, to Saturday, April 13, Jessica Campbell, of Toronto, and alum Adam Umbach, of New York, will be showcased in the SOAD Speaker Series Invited Artist Solo Exhibitions. A reception will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 7. Campbell is a cartoonist, visual artist and writer originally from British Columbia. Umbach, based out of Brooklyn, New York, is a biographical painter. He earned his B.F.A. in studio art in 2009.
The Student Artist in Residence Exhibition, in the South Gallery, and the Best of Design Juried Exhibition, in the North Gallery, will run from Monday, April 29, to Saturday, Sept. 7. A reception and awards ceremony will be held during SOAD Senior Show, from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, May 3. SAIR artists are Pheng Thao, a studio art senior from Green Bay, and Joshua Fusco, a graphic communications junior from Shafer, Minn.

Gallery 209 will have a mix of student, club and class exhibits, rotating every week this semester. Exhibits include those by the Fine Arts Association, thesis, photojournalism and advanced printmaking. Also scheduled are:

'Distorted History' / by SAIR artist Pheng Thao

A juried student art exhibit at the Louis Smith Tainter House, home of the Stout Foundation, will feature students’ works from Monday, April 1, to Tuesday, April 30. A reception will be held from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on April 5, at LST House, 320 S. Broadway St., Menomonie.

A drawing exhibition, Inspired by the Mabel, will feature works by Bachelor of Fine Arts students, with a reception at the Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts from 5 to 6 p.m. on April 5, at 205 Main St. E., Menomonie. All are welcome to the exhibit and art class and to see the historic buildings.

The fourth annual Art-U art education program for K-12 students will have an art show on Monday, March 4, location to be determined.

Art-U teaches youth about art, while they create under the instruction of �� art education students. The program is in collaboration with university students, Arts Integration Menomonie (AIM), and Dunn, Eau Claire and Chippewa county 4-H programs.

Art education Program Director Ann Carlisle believes these collaborations increase awareness and appreciation of the visual arts for children and their families.

“They help our preservice art educators to become more confident and competent in teaching. They also bring people together in community to create and enjoy the visual arts collaboratively,” she said.

Civic & Literary Conversations

�� . Center for Applied Ethics aims to advance discussions by modeling respectful and open dialogue, and by bringing informed and knowledgeable perspectives to some of the most important and controversial topics of today.

The center will host two discussions this spring semester:

Sylvester Johnson, director of the Virginia Tech Center for Humanities, will speak about the impact of artificial intelligence on the human condition from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 19, in the Memorial Student Center Willow/Walnut rooms.
Anne Coughlin, professor of law at the University of Virginia, will present on the recent Dobbs v. Jackson decision that overturned Roe v. Wade from 3 to 4 :30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6, location to be determined.

The center also hosts Philosophers’ Cafés, informal, friendly conversations of contemporary issues. Meetings are open to all and are led by �� and UW-Eau Claire faculty. Upcoming conversations will be held at 7 p.m., at Brewery Nonic in Menomonie:

“There are a number of important ethical issues and questions circulating right now,” said Director Xan Bozzo, assistant professor of philosophy. “The Center for Applied Ethics seeks to tackle a wide range of these through a variety of programs and events, often open to all.”

The Literature Committee ��. Reading Across Campus will host featured speaker Patrick O’Donnell, as he presents “The Living Tree: Lady Gregory and the Irish Literary Renaissance,” from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 28, in the historic Harvey Hall Theatre.

Originally from Ireland, O’Donnell has been a Minnesota resident for 30 years and has taught at Normandale Community College for 25 years. He is the founder and co-director of the St. Paul Irish Arts Week, and he is the founder and editor of Celtic Junction Arts Review, an online quarterly cultural magazine.

His talk will discuss the greatness of Lady Gregory; her role in the Abbey Theatre, Ireland ��. national theatre; and her play “The Rising of the Moon.” The program will also include a performance by the Chippewa Valley Irish Dance, led by owner and head instructor Brenna Jasper.

The University Archives will host an inaugural series of lectures on interdisciplinary approaches to health care. / ��

University Archives will host a panel on Graphic and Narrative Medicine: Telling Stories of Disease, Pandemics, and Healing from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Monday, March 25, in the University Library room 504A. Reservations are necessary.

As part of an inaugural series of lectures on interdisciplinary approaches to health care, professors Lopa Basu and Mary Climes will share perspectives of literary analysis and comics creation to examine contemporary graphic memoirs and prose genres memorializing recent health crises, including the pandemic. An interactive activity involving writing and drawing a personal memoir will be held after the presentation.

Registration is open for �� . 45th annual Early Childhood Education Conference, held Friday, April 19, to Saturday, April 20.

Keynote speakers musician and author Jim Gill and Raelene Ostberg will present on the theme of joy. In his keynote, “A Joyous Way to Learn,” Gill will share examples of his books and songs and how his creations in music play inspire young children to move, sing and make connections, while learning to regulate their movements.

Ostberg, founder of Thriving Together, will present “Finding Joy.” Through shared real-life stories, educators can learn to construct a personal joy plan to bolster feelings of gratitude and reduce stress as they carry out their critical role in caring for and educating young children.

Gill will also lead Music Play with Purpose, an interactive session with movement games and active music play that can help children develop abilities essential to school success, such as self-regulation and literacy development.
