Staff honored for dedication, innovation in serving students and campus while maintaining 32 buildings

When students at �� enter a classroom, lab or residence hall, or head to the student center for lunch or a show, they know they can count on bright, orderly spaces awaiting them.

That ��. because a group of employees dedicated to their well-being and career success has taken care of it for them. At ��, 54 custodians keep 32 buildings and 2.24 million square feet of space clean and ready for learning and living day after day, semester after semester.

The team ��. innovative approaches to problem-solving and dedication to serving students, faculty, staff and campus visitors haven’t gone unnoticed. On Sept. 26, Custodial Services received the University Staff Excellence Program Award from the Universities of Wisconsin during the Board of Regents meeting at UW-Parkside in Kenosha.

“The custodial team is an amazing group of dedicated employees essential to upholding our mission as Wisconsin ��. �� and supporting the success of our students and our university,” said Chancellor Katherine Frank.

Frank attended the meeting and award ceremony along with custodial leads Bob Cook, Facilities Management academic/service buildings; Aimee Lipke, University Centers; and Brad Mengeling, University Housing; and their respective supervisors, Zenon Smolarek, Darrin Witucki and Justin Fults. Also attending were Erik Guenard, vice chancellor for Business, Finance and Administrative Services; Glendalí Rodríguez, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs; and Dean of Students Sandi Scott.

Meanwhile, about 20 members of the custodial staff gathered in Merle M. Price Commons at �� to see a livestream of the award ceremony. They celebrated with a cake.

Cook, who has been at �� for 41 years, spoke on behalf of the custodial team.

“Custodians play a critical role in students feeling welcomed, and sometimes it is the custodian who notices something about a student and can refer them to someone who can help them on campus. While cleaning is an important part of our job, ultimately, we are about creating successful students,” Cook told the Board of Regents.

“It ��. about the students and the staff and keeping everyone safe and healthy,” Cook added.

Scott nominated the team for the award. “Our custodial team is comprised of dedicated, hard-working and long-serving individuals who are professionals and who take great pride in maintaining and servicing our facilities across campus,” Scott said.

“Custodians know they do more than keep our buildings clean,” Scott said. “They provide daily care and services for spaces that provide and support living, dining and learning both in and out of the classroom. They create first impressions for recruitment, and the care and cleaning of the campus spaces that they take such pride in contributes to retention. Daily, their work helps us live out our polytechnic mission.”

It's the second consecutive year �� has won the program award, with University Dining honored in 2023. Two individuals from UW also are honored each year, including �� . Jo Johnson, Human Resources, in 2022.

Taking care of campus

As Wisconsin ��. ��, with a focus on applied learning, business and industry partnerships, and career outcomes, �� has three times more labs and studio spaces than classrooms, creating challenges for the custodial staff.

Extra and sometimes special cleaning efforts are required.

For example, in a charcoal drawing studio with more than 20 easels, in the band room with dozens of chairs and elsewhere, the staff recognized that using an electric leaf blower would be more efficient to “sweep” the floor around the many obstacles rather than trying to go around or displace objects with a broom or vacuum. Debris is quickly blown to one spot and then swept up.

“Using the leaf blower is an adaptation as a staff and a way to make things easier,” said Brad Kupczak, Custodial Services program manager for academic buildings. “Efficiency and productivity are critical in our custodial operations. Our staff has come up with several creative ideas to make the job easier, while still maintaining facility cleanliness and a focus on our primary customers, the students. The staff members are definitely unsung heroes.”

Custodians adjust to class and event schedules each day. Academic custodial, for example, begins work on weekdays at 3:30 a.m.; a second shift wraps up at 11:30 p.m.

Sustainability efforts honored by U.S. Department of Education, statewide Focus on Energy

�� can officially add a new “color” to its identity – green.

The custodial team supports major campus events that draw large crowds, such as the biannual Career Conference, Stout Game Expo, Fashion Without Fabric, commencements, plays, Blue Devil Athletics, art and design Senior Show, Research Day and art exhibits.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, the team was cited for its efforts to clean and remove furniture for social distancing; adapting to ever-changing cleaning protocols; and managing COVID housing. During COVID, the team helped replace flooring, saving �� almost $100,000.

Earlier this year, �� was named a 2024 Green Ribbon Award winner by the U.S. Department of Education. Custodial efforts contributed significantly to the honor, including waste reduction efforts, winter salt management, chemical controls and reduction, indoor air quality efforts, as well as custodial membership on several campus sustainability committees.

For nearly a decade, the team has used four primary “green” chemicals for nearly all cleaning functions. The system replaced 26 previously used chemicals and resulted in $45,000 in annual savings, a 67% reduction.

The award comes with $7,500 for staff professional development.

Two large engineering labs and one of the busiest building corridors at �� have fresh, new looks this fall with students back on campus.

Phase one of a two-year $7.4 million lab renovation project was completed this summer in Jarvis Hall Technology Wing. The Engineering Technology Research and Development Lab, and Plastics Engineering Lab were completely revamped, along with the hallway between the labs.

The hallway is a direct route for students, faculty, staff and campus visitors between Jarvis Tech, Jarvis Science, Micheels and the Applied Arts academic buildings. The labs have new windows and overhead doors with windows to give passers-by a glimpse of the hands-on learning taking place daily in the large spaces.

“The spaces better highlight what it is to be a polytechnic. They showcase the applied learning that is happening, and passers-by can see our students in action,” said Glendalí Rodríguez, provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs.

Phase two of the project will take place in summer 2025. Adjacent and to the north of the engineering labs, the Construction Lab for construction management majors and interdisciplinary Research and Development Prototyping Lab will be renovated.

Phase 1, which began in mid-May, covered 17,000 square feet while phase two will encompass nearly 24,000 feet. Overall, the project is 40,915 square feet, including 30,103 square feet of lab space.

As Wisconsin ��. ��, �� emphasizes applied learning with three times more labs than classrooms. In some majors, like in the two renovated labs, classroom and lab space are next to each other so that lectures and hands-on applications are seamlessly intertwined.

The mechanical and plastics engineering programs are part of �� . Robert F. Cervenka School of Engineering. In the 2024 First Destination Report from Career Services, recent graduates from the four undergraduate engineering majors reported 100% employment within six months of graduating and an average starting salary of more than $70,000.

The Integrated Technology Lab, mainly for mechanical engineering, and engineering and technology majors, previously had a closed classroom space within the lab. With the renovation, an open classroom will be next to the lab equipment students use daily.

A wall was removed in the plastics lab to turn it into a larger, open space.

Jarvis Technology Wing was built in 1969, said Zenon Smolarek, associate director of Facilities Management. This is the first major renovation of the lab spaces. The concept of labs with windows matches that of Jarvis Hall Science Wing, which opened in 2009.

For both renovations, industrial equipment had to be moved from the labs but is back in place for the fall semester. Renovations included new flooring, dust collection and exhaust systems, energy saving LED lights and paint. The original parquet flooring contained asbestos.

Lab and building infrastructure also was updated. Both labs now have air conditioning for the first time and a new sprinkler system. The Tech Wing has its own water system instead of sharing it with the Science Wing, solving water pressure issues, said Chad Schlough, project manager for Facilities Management.

Also:

A storage area was created for high-tech GPS and surveying equipment used by students.
Restrooms in the area were updated, and a single occupant restroom was added.
Second-floor mechanical rooms and equipment were updated.

“It ��. a win-win for facilities and the departments. It ��. great to have fresh labs,” said John Buss, instrument shop coordinator in the engineering and technology department.

The overhead doors from the labs to the hallway will make it easier down the road to add new and bigger equipment, Rodríguez said, and for students and professors to collaborate.

The general contractor is R.J. Jurowski of Whitehall. Bill Jurowski, a �� alum, is project manager. Ethan Wiersgalla, site manager for R.J. Jurowski, said the project has employed 20 to 25 people.

Accola to lead economic development efforts in Dunn County, Menomonie along with ��polingj September 10, 2024

New, shared position was created earlier this year

Adam Accola has been named the first joint director of economic development in Dunn County.

The position was created earlier this year by the county, City of Menomonie and ��. Support also was provided by the Dunn County Economic Development Corporation, Greater Menomonie Development Corporation and the Stout Technology and Business Park. The six entities signed a memorandum of agreement to provide funding.

Accola has been a manager and administrator at the Coven, formerly CoLab, for five years in Eau Claire, a co-working space that supports start-up businesses and entrepreneurs.

“I am looking forward to the innovative and collaborative approach to economic development that partners have pursued through this position,” Accola said. “The entirety of our county is ripe with possibilities for current businesses to thrive and grow, new businesses to emerge and succeed, and for outside businesses looking to call greater Dunn County home.”

Accola will initially focus on:

Retention and expansion of current businesses
New business development, including start-ups
Fostering the development of new housing
Business attraction.

“This shared position will allow the greater community to respond in a comprehensive way to the needs of business and industry,” said �� Chancellor Katherine Frank. “It ��. not just about attracting new business to the region but also working with existing businesses and providing streamlined resources.”

Duerst, who lives in the Boyceville area, is a department assistant with English, philosophy and communication studies. She has worked at �� for three years.

The individual nominating her stated, "Diane is always friendly, supportive and willing to help. She goes out of her way to make everyone feel welcome and heard. She mentors our student workers. Her greatest asset is her willingness to learn and discover. If she doesn't know an answer, she finds it.

Two �� staff members have been named special award recipients by the Universities of Wisconsin and were honored at a ceremony on Nov. 9, in Madison.

Academic Advisor Jamie Arenz is one of 13 honorees of the Dr. P.B. Poorman Award for Outstanding Achievement on Behalf of LGBTQ+ People.

Executive Director for Student Inclusion and Belonging Mai Khou Xiong, interim director of Multicultural Student Services, is one of 13 honorees of the Outstanding Women of Color in Education Award.

“Mai Khou ��. and Jamie ��. commitment to the students they serve has been so powerful to our inclusive excellence efforts,” said Assistant Chancellor of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Quin Brooks.

“They work diligently every day to create and maintain spaces where an optimum sense of belonging can be crystallized. This has a direct impact on the retention of our students. The work they do and the support they provide our students is beyond vital to �� . mission.”

Each UW campus was invited to submit nominations for the annual awards.

Dr. P.B. Poorman Award

The Dr. P.B. Poorman Award, now in its 15th year, is given to people in the LGBTQIA+ community who have helped to create a safer and more inclusive climate. It celebrates the memory and legacy of Paula B. Poorman, a faculty member at UW-Whitewater who dedicated her life to improving the lives of LGBTQIA+ people.

“Working with all students is my passion and meeting students where they are,” Arenz said. “I strive to show everyone respect and kindness. I am a believer in holistic advising as well. I believe being my authentic self allows me to be approachable and easier to make connections with everyone.”

Arenz ��. nomination letter stated that he is “truly the epitome of a student-centered professional who is always looking to create an inclusive environment for all students but especially those within the LGBTQ+ community. Jamie works tirelessly to ensure that students feel supported and engaged at all times. He quickly builds rapport with students and helps them navigate the college experience both inside and outside the classroom. He approaches each student as an individual while listening and empathizing with their situation. Jamie creates a safe working environment both with his co-workers but most impactfully with the student workers within the Advisement Center at ��.”

Arenz has served as the Gender and Sexuality Alliance adviser and ensures that students can find their voice on campus. He supports advocacy-related events such as Rainbow Graduation, the annual Qubie Gayla and Diversity Week. He is engaged in community service at Stepping Stones of Dunn County and Habitat for Humanity in Menomonie.

“He does all of this without seeking official acclaim or accolades and, although he does not seek attention for his efforts, he promotes equitable opportunities for everyone in the campus community during his energetic conversations with faculty, staff and students. He never hesitates to speak up, to show support and to show up for all members of the Stout community,” his nomination continued.

Arenz is a two-time alum, earning both his bachelor ��. and master ��. degrees from ��. He has served at the university since fall 2015.

"Honorees are helping build a better experience for our students, faculty, and staff," said Universities of Wisconsin President Jay Rothman. "This award recognizes their achievements in creating a safer and inclusive climate at our universities.”

Outstanding Women of Color Award

The Outstanding Women of Color in Education Award honors women of color for their leadership in making significant and lasting contributions to their campuses and communities. It is given to faculty, staff, students or community members for their achievements in advancing equity and inclusion for people of color within the Universities of Wisconsin as well as communities across the state.

Xiong ��. nomination letter stated, “Mai Khou has an invaluable skillset of bringing harmony to the ways in which people differ, which is the purest definition of diversity.”

She was awarded for going above and beyond in her dual roles of supporting students as both the executive director of Student Inclusion and Belonging and interim director of Multicultural Student Services.

She also exhibits “superior leadership and guidance” to TRIO Support Services, McNair Scholars Program, The Qube and Multicultural Students Services. Through her leadership, MSS Stoutward Bound college bridge program received the 2022 Ann Lydecker Educational Diversity Award from the State Council on Affirmative Action.

“Mai Khou is intentional about campus partnerships that promote inclusion, and she fosters belonging and collaborations with several offices across campus,” her nomination continued.

Her collaborations include partnering with the Office of International Education for a heritage-based study abroad program to Thailand; and with the Educational Pathways and Continuing Education and Conferences offices for a Stout STEM Experience youth camp for high school students, with a 3M grant for underrepresented students in STEM in summer 2023.

Stoutward Bound honored with state Educational Diversity Award

A highly successful program that supports students each year from historically underrepresented and underserved backgrounds has received a state award.

“The Universities of Wisconsin have a longstanding commitment to inclusion at our universities," Rothman said. “We are proud to honor these women of color whose achievements in advocacy and scholarship are transforming our campuses and communities to be more equitable and inclusive.”

The award has recognized more than 400 women of color for their transformational work since it was founded in 1995.

Active couple is funding addition to building project that may inspire students, others to pursue a healthy lifestyle

Staying physically fit, active and inspired by the world around them is a way of life for Dallas and Edye Pankowski, who enjoy downhill skiing, biking, hiking and adventure-based trips.

It stands to reason then that Dallas, an alum, and Edye, a Menomonie native, are supporting the upcoming Recreation Complex renovation at �� with a gift of $5 million — the largest in university history. Their hope: Inspire students and others to be active and pursue a healthy lifestyle.

The gift will provide one-sixth of the cost for the $30.5 million project and create a new welcome and community space named in honor of the Pankowskis. The 2,700-square-foot addition will be on the west side of the Sports and Fitness Center, just south of the adjoining Johnson Fieldhouse.

About 2,000 people a day from students to staff to community members to Athletics recruits and other potential new students could pass through the space.

“We were impressed by the overall design, the asset that it would be to the university and the community, and we have a strong interest in health, wellness and physical fitness,” Dallas said. “It ��. a fairly large atrium that would really dress up the building.”

The Pankowskis, from Plover, near Stevens Point, originally committed $4 million in 2018 to Stout University Foundation as an estate gift. However, they hadn’t decided how they wanted the gift to be used. After hearing about the funding opportunity to enhance the Recreation Complex, they chose it for their original gift and added $1 million.

“We really believe in athletics and recreation as part of the university program,” Dallas said.

The Pankowskis were on campus recently when their gift was announced at the Stout University Foundation ��. annual scholarship reception, and they received a standing ovation. The Foundation announced more than 400 scholarships totaling $1.2 million; the Pankowskis also sponsor two of those scholarships annually for STEM students.

“Their gift and legacy will be truly transformational in its power to attract and retain students and serve the broader community,” Chancellor Katherine Frank said.

“Dallas and Edye immediately recognized the importance of this project to our campus and to the community and stepped forward to participate in and further enhance the building and the co-curricular experience for our students,” Frank added.

The Pankowski-named space, including a lounge and retail area, will create a new, central entryway to the Sports and Fitness Center, which includes student recreation facilities, and to Johnson Fieldhouse.

Without the gift, the space would not have been included in the project. The other $25.5 million will come from student segregated fees. In 2019, students voted in a Stout Student Association advisory referendum to approve raising fees for the project. It includes:

A new, larger cardio and strength-training facility, 10,000 square feet, on the west side for students, next to the Pankowski gathering area
Renovating the old swimming pool, which was closed in 2018, and replacing it with a multiuse gym for recreation
Expanded and upgraded locker rooms for students
Moving the Athletics weight room to the former student fitness facility
Creating multiuse studio spaces in the current Athletics weight room.

The design process is underway. �� will seek formal approval for the renovation in the 2025-27 state budget. No additional state funding is needed, but inclusion in the budget allows �� to proceed with the project.

Construction could begin in 2026 and finish in 2027, according to Justin Utpadel, �� senior facilities officer.

Including the Pankowskis’ gift, private support for the project totals $7.3 million.

The north end of the building, including Johnson Fieldhouse, opened in 1965, when the university had less than half the students it does today. It was the first complete Athletics and recreation facility in school history, replacing a 1901 building called the School of Physical Culture that was east of Bowman Hall.

In 1989 a major addition to the south end of the building included the Multipurpose Room indoor track. Minor additions followed in 1997 and 2000.

Pankowskis have built successful company, traveled the world

Dallas Pankowski remembers the old School of Physical Culture. “There wasn’t much for gyms and no intramurals to speak of. I envy these kids today with the things they have available to them,” he said.

The Milwaukee native earned bachelor ��. and master ��. degrees in industrial education from �� and a doctorate from the University of Missouri, then taught electronics at State University of New York-Oswego. He met Edye in Menomonie. She worked for two years at Stout because she could not afford college, then eventually earned a bachelor ��. degree in studio art at Oswego, New York, a master ��. in fashion design at Syracuse University and a doctorate in interior architecture at Penn State University. She is a retired university professor.

In the late 1970s, the Pankowskis moved to Plover and established Pankowski Associates, a real estate construction management company in the Stevens Point area. Dallas oversaw construction of their apartment buildings and single family homes; Edye handled the interior design and accounting. The company, still in business but smaller now, also owned commercial real estate properties in the Green Bay-Appleton area.

“I’ve always had a warm feeling in my heart for Stout because of what it did for me,” Dallas said, noting when he came to �� in the mid-1950s it was the first time he’d ever stepped foot on a college campus.

“I really believe in the Stout philosophy,” he said, adding that he strongly supports the blend of liberal arts with hands-on technology education. He cited the numerous labs he had at �� and personal interaction with professors.

The Pankowskis also have supported many projects near where they live, including an amphitheater at Schmeeckle Reserve in Stevens Point, an extensive lighted trail system at Standing Rocks Park and three state-of-the-art handicap-accessible, all-weather fishing piers in Lake Pacawa Park in Plover. Edye designed the signage for the last two projects, and Dallas oversaw construction.

Their lifelong interests have included border-to-border state bike rides, downhill skiing out West and adventure hiking. Last summer, they did three consecutive tours — 12 days of hiking in Albania, 12 days on an ice-hardened ship, 800 miles above the Arctic Circle, doing zodiac wet landings to remote islands, searching for wildlife, including polar bears, with armed guides, and 16 days of remote hiking in Mongolia. In 2022 they hiked the Azores islands off the coast of Portugal. Dallas also recently took race car driving lessons and experienced high-performance go-carts.

They have traveled to more than three-fourths of the world ��. nearly 200 countries.

With their physical activities and their career in the building industry, supporting a recreation building project at �� “ties it all together. We want to be part of a project that gets done, has the highest level of workmanship and will be used to make a difference,” Dallas said.

Hall of Heroes ceremony Nov. 10 for Jones, Bossert at Memorial Student Center; other veterans events planned

Two �� alumni who died while serving their country more than 60 years apart will be recognized in a special ceremony Friday, Nov. 10, to honor their sacrifices.

U.S. Army veterans 2nd Lt. Reed W. Jones, a Nebraska native who lived in Groton, N.Y., and died in 1944 during World War II, and Staff Sgt. Andrew Bossert, a Wisconsin native who died in 2005 during the Iraq War, will join the university ��. Memorial Wall to fallen service members, also known as the Hall of Heroes.

In advance of Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 11, the ceremony will begin at 11 a.m. Friday in the Memorial Student Center, in Huff ��. Lounge on the first floor. A livestream of the event on the �� YouTube channel will be available beginning at 10:55 a.m.

Plaques with photos of Jones and Bossert will be unveiled as part of the program. Relatives of Jones from Nevada and Arizona plan to watch the ceremony remotely. Bossert ��. father and mother, Steve and Diane, of Fountain City, and nephew, Reese, plan to attend, and other relatives will watch remotely.

Jones’ induction plaque will be read by retired Army Lt. Col. Brian Hackner, �� military education benefits coordinator. Bossert ��. plaque will be read by his mother.

Chancellor Katherine Frank will provide opening remarks. Student Centers Director Darrin Witucki will provide background information on the 11-year-old project. �� Archives Director Heather Stecklein will explain the research process involved in documenting Jones’ and Bossert ��. enrollment at ��, time in the service and locating relatives.

“We are proud that our campus has a permanent display to honor these individuals and educate future generations of �� students about who they were and the sacrifices they made,” Frank said.

�� has 236 veterans and current military among its approximately 7,000 students, along with 37 employees who are veterans.

46th and 47th alum to be honored

Bossert and Jones are the 46th and 47th alum to be honored on the Memorial Wall. Recently, archival information about their time as students at �� and military service became more readily available.

Stecklein and Archives Student Assistant Ingmar Amberson reviewed a list of potential Hall of Heroes honorees and identified the additional substantiation needed to establish the full biography necessary for formal inclusion. Amberson, of Menomonie, is a second-year student.

Jones attended ��, then called Stout Institute, from 1939 to 1941 before enlisting in 1942. He died during a combat aircraft training exercise in 1944 in Kansas.

Bossert, a 1999 Cochrane-Fountain City High School graduate, attended �� for one semester in 1999 before joining the service. He initially served in Korea and was killed by a car bomb at a checkpoint in 2005 in Ramadi, Iraq.

“The Hall of Heroes recognizes each individual as an eternal member of our campus community. Every honoree in the Hall of Heroes built friendships, experienced personal growth and connected with their contemporaries on campus in countless ways,” Stecklein said.

“As members of the current Stout community, we are called to recognize those who lost their lives serving our country. They contributed to the enduring effort that sustains our freedom and security. It is an honor to identify and memorialize these individuals,” she added.

With the new inductees, the wall includes one veteran of the Spanish-American War, six from World War I, 28 from World War II, two from the Korean War, eight from the Vietnam War, and two from the Iraq War.

Memorial Student Center

The Memorial Student Center is named in honor of those from the university community who died as a result of combat, disease or accident while serving in the U.S. military during times of war or crisis.

The original Memorial Student Center, now the Communication Technologies Building, opened in 1959 when the university was called Stout State College. It included an engraved stone honoring fallen alumni.

The current student center opened in 1985. The engraved stone was saved and can be found outside of the lower level, south entrance of the building, near the memorial wall.

Custodial staff member honored for ‘going above and beyond,’ proactive approach to her work

Nicole Baker has received the University Staff Employee Appreciation award for October at ��.

Baker, of Elmwood, is a custodian lead in the Academic Custodial department. She has worked at �� for 3½ years. As a lead, Baker works in buildings throughout campus and helps set up for special events.

The individual nominating Baker stated, "Nicole goes above and beyond the daily tasks to really take care of her buildings and her people. She is thorough and proactive in her service to our building, which is one of the more challenging facilities to take care of.

“In addition to being a cleaning professional, she is an expert with logistics and process improvement. Nicole recommended a facilities equipment change that was very low-cost and which made our building much safer. She often makes suggestions that improve safety, efficiency or both. Nicole has a professional, helpful and collaborative attitude and is really deserving of this award."

Each employee of the month receives a certificate of recognition and a gift presented by Chancellor Katherine Frank.

The award, in its 18th year, was established by the Chancellor ��. Office and is co-sponsored by the University Staff Senate.

Ruch receives Support Staff Recognition award from Wisconsin College Personnel Association

In the Dean of Students Office at ��, Executive Assistant Karrin Ruch supports student success in a variety of ways.

It was Ruch, however, who received support recently when she was nominated for and received the Support Staff Recognition award from the Wisconsin College Personnel Association for her professionalism and dedication.

Ruch thanked her colleagues for nominating her and letters of support. “I felt very honored. It really made me feel like the work I do on campus is valued and appreciated. I couldn’t do the work without them and feel fortunate to be part of the Dean of Students team.

“I enjoy being part of a team that works great together to ensure that our students are heard and supported. I truly feel that I am the lucky one who gets to work on an amazing campus with the best students and supportive co-workers,” said Ruch, of Menomonie, who has worked at �� for 11 years.

Ruch is an initial point of contact for students who need to meet with the dean, associate dean or assistant dean. She also handles background checks for students in the Study Abroad program and for other outside agencies, as well as sending out student absence notices, serving on employee search committees and more.

“Karin is truly the ‘face’ of the office. She excels at providing exemplary customer service and in doing whatever is needed to support student success,” said Dean of Students Sandi Scott. “Because of Karrin and her commitment to ��, the Dean of Students team and to students, we function more efficiently and more effectively.”

Jacqueline Bonneville, associate dean, said Ruch “has a perfect disposition and ability to show warmth and a calm and reassuring presence to everyone who walks through our door (virtually or in person).”

Along with other duties, Ruch co-manages the Helping Hand Food+ Pantry for students in the Administration Building. She manages the inventory, assists with volunteers and has worked to promote the pantry and receive additional funding to supports its efforts.

“This experience has been an absolute blessing. I have met lots of wonderful students and learned a lot about food insecurities on our campus. I feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to assist with the pantry and do my best to make sure it ��. a welcome space for all students,” Ruch said.

This is the third time in three years a �� employee has received a WCPA honor. Ian Foley and Adam Ludwig, both from University Housing, received the Nora McGuire Outstanding Professional honor in spring 2023 and 2021, respectively.

WCPA formed nearly 50 years ago. Its mission is to provide “professional development for higher education professionals serving students in Wisconsin,” according to its website.

U.S. Department of Education award will boost advising, first-year experience, mental health efforts, financial wellness

Comprehensive student success, leading to graduates who are career-ready and STRONG, is the goal of a new, major federal grant awarded to ��.

The $2.5 million award over five years from the U.S. Department of Education will help �� expand its ability to serve students, especially low-income, first-generation and transfer.

�� . STRONG program — Strategic Technology, Retention and Organizational Networks and Guidance — seeks to holistically support students beyond the classroom to enhance their academic success.

“Title III grants are a big deal. They provide funds to fundamentally transform universities so they can better educate students. Stout is heavily investing our Title III funds to make sure students have a great experience, know what they need to do to graduate and save as much money as possible,” said Kelly Wenig, Advisement Center director and interim project manager.

“I am extremely proud to lead this project as it gets off the ground and make sure that our students get everything they need when they come here. I really believe that we are going to make our university a leader in the region in terms of student success and experience, both inside and outside the classroom,” Wenig said.

A variety of new grant-funded initiatives will support their academic progress, including:

Students work in the Math Teaching and Learning Center at ��. A new Title III federal grant will provide new support for students through six initiatives, including advising. / ��

Improved academic advising support. Students will get the most support possible with a new degree audit system, Stellic, to help them stay on track toward graduation and a new academic advising model based a student ��. unique needs. Stellic is an all-in-one platform that helps students plan and track their progress. Advisers can see who is off track and proactively engage with struggling students in real time. Stellic also can project outcomes of what-if scenarios to help maximize students’ time at ��.
A new First Year Experience program. It will create a holistic approach to support students in their transition to higher education with intentional, immediate, and ongoing programming and resources designed to increase their ability to succeed academically and socially during their educational career and beyond.
A Financial Wellness Center on campus. The center, which is already open, provides financial education, personalized counseling, a resource hub, scholarship and aid assistance, career planning, and partnerships that offer access to financial professionals and industry experts.
Enhanced mental health strategies. They will include new training programs, such as Mental Health First Aid, and a speaker series. The efforts will help raise staff awareness and provide strategies to assist students. Mental health issues are a leading cause nationally of students leaving college without a degree.
A new professional learning community, through the Nakatani Teaching and Learning Center, to support faculty and staff professional development and foster institutional change regarding student success.
Building a retention and student success framework through faculty and staff training in the Higher Learning Commission ��. Student Success Academy.

Advisers help first-year students register for classes at ��. / ��

“This is across-the-board, comprehensive institutional support for student success at ��,” said Anne Hoeltke, director of the Office of Research and Sponsored Programs, which oversaw the grant application.

Student success is the leading goal of �� . FOCUS2030 strategic plan, and the grant ��. goals align with the university ��. Strategic Enrollment Plan.

The initiatives will help the university more effectively support students with responsive, sustainable academic programming to:

Improve retention and graduation rates
Increase student satisfaction and engagement
Improve student performance and enrollment growth

A portion of the grant will be used to hire a project director, academic adviser, financial wellness coach and First Year Experience director, as well as provide faculty fellowships.

Preceding the grant approval an application was submitted to determine if �� was eligible. Then, a university committee worked on the proposal for four months before submitting it in mid-May.

The grant period began Oct. 1 and runs through September 2028. The office of Enrollment and Strategic Initiatives, under Vice Chancellor Ediz Kaykayoglu, will oversee grant management.

Education & Background:

I grew up on a small dairy farm milking 40 head of cows outside Chilton, WI that has been in my family for over 125 years. I earned my undergraduate degree in History from UW-Green Bay in 2006, my MA in American History from the University of Cincinnati in 2009, and my PhD in Rural, Agricultural, Technological, and Environmental History from Iowa State University in 2017. Since 2017, I have taught and worked in student success offices at Iowa State University, Wayne State College, Temple University ��. Japan campus in Tokyo, and now, proudly, at Stout back in my beloved home state.

As the Director of the Advisement Center, I help shape our systems and work with other offices to ensure all our students get the best support we can possibly provide them and will continue to work to expand support to students.

Free Time/Personal:

In my free time, I exercise, watch movies, enjoy spending time with my cats, and traveling around the Midwest. I firmly believe that Wisconsin is the best state, and that the Midwest is best place on earth.
