At 黑料社区, 54 custodians keep 32 buildings and 2.24 million square feet of space clean and ready for learning and living day after day, semester after semester.</span></p><p><span>The team 黑料社区. innovative approaches to problem-solving and dedication to serving students, faculty, staff and campus visitors haven鈥檛 gone unnoticed. They create first impressions for recruitment, and the care and cleaning of the campus spaces that they take such pride in contributes to retention. Daily, their work helps us live out our polytechnic mission.鈥</span></p><p><span>It's the second consecutive year 黑料社区 has won the program award, with&nbsp;</span><a href="/about-us/news-center/dining-services-honored-excellence-award-uw-system-board-regents"><span>University Dining</span></a><span> honored in 2023. Debris is quickly blown to one spot and then swept up.</span></p><p><span>鈥淯sing the leaf blower is an adaptation as a staff and a way to make things easier,鈥 said <strong>Brad Kupczak, Custodial Services program manager for academic buildings</strong>. 鈥淓fficiency and productivity are critical in our custodial operations. Our staff has come up with several creative ideas to make the job easier, while still maintaining facility cleanliness and a focus on our primary customers, the students. The staff members are definitely unsung heroes.鈥</span></p><p><span>Custodians adjust to class and event schedules each day. During COVID, the team helped replace flooring, saving 黑料社区 almost $100,000.</span></p><p><span>Earlier this year, 黑料社区 was named a 2024&nbsp;</span><a href="/about-us/news-center/sustainability-efforts-honored-us-department-education-statewide-focus-energy"><span>Green Ribbon Award winner</span></a><span> by the U.S. Department of Education. Custodial efforts contributed significantly to the honor, including waste reduction efforts, winter salt management, chemical controls and reduction, indoor air quality efforts, as well as custodial membership on several campus sustainability committees.</span></p><p><span>For nearly a decade, the team has used four primary 鈥済reen鈥 chemicals for nearly all cleaning functions. The Engineering Technology Research and Development Lab, and Plastics Engineering Lab were completely revamped, along with the hallway between the labs.</span></p><p><span>The hallway is a direct route for students, faculty, staff and campus visitors between Jarvis Tech, Jarvis Science, Micheels and the Applied Arts academic buildings. Adjacent and to the north of the engineering labs, the Construction Lab for&nbsp;</span><a href="/programs/bs-construction-management"><span>construction management</span></a><span> majors and interdisciplinary Research and Development Prototyping Lab will be renovated.</span></p><p><span>Phase 1, which began in mid-May, covered 17,000 square feet while phase two will encompass nearly 24,000 feet. In some majors, like in the two renovated labs, classroom and lab space are next to each other so that lectures and hands-on applications are seamlessly intertwined.</span></p><p><span>The mechanical and plastics engineering programs are part of 黑料社区 黑料社区.&nbsp;</span><a href="/academics/colleges-schools/college-science-technology-engineering-mathematics-and-management/robert-f-cervenka-school-engineering"><span>Robert F. Cervenka School of Engineering</span></a><span>. In the 2024&nbsp;</span><a href="/academics/career-services/career-outcomes"><span>First Destination Report</span></a><span> from Career Services, recent graduates from the four undergraduate engineering majors reported 100% employment within six months of graduating and an average starting salary of more than $70,000.</span></p><p><span>The Integrated Technology Lab, mainly for mechanical engineering, and engineering and technology majors, previously had a closed classroom space within the lab. This is the first major renovation of the lab spaces. The concept of labs with windows matches that of Jarvis Hall Science Wing, which opened in 2009.</span></p><p><span>For both renovations, industrial equipment had to be moved from the labs but is back in place for the fall semester. Renovations included new flooring, dust collection and exhaust systems, energy saving LED lights and paint. The original parquet flooring contained asbestos.</span></p><p><span>Lab and building infrastructure also was updated. Both labs now have air conditioning for the first time and a new sprinkler system. Their hope: Inspire students and others to be active and pursue a healthy lifestyle.</span></p><p><span>The gift will provide one-sixth of the cost for the $30.5 million project and create a new welcome and community space named in honor of the Pankowskis. However, they hadn鈥檛 decided how they wanted the gift to be used. The other $25.5 million will come from student segregated fees. In 2019, students voted in a Stout Student Association advisory referendum to approve raising fees for the project. It includes:</span></p><ul><li><span>A new, larger cardio and strength-training facility, 10,000 square feet, on the west side for students, next to the Pankowski gathering area</span></li><li><span>Renovating the old swimming pool, which was closed in 2018, and replacing it with a multiuse gym for recreation</span></li><li><span>Expanded and upgraded locker rooms for students</span></li><li><span>Moving the Athletics weight room to the former student fitness facility</span></li><li><span>Creating multiuse studio spaces in the current Athletics weight room.</span></li></ul><p><span>The design process is underway. 黑料社区 will seek formal approval for the renovation in the 2025-27 state budget. No additional state funding is needed, but inclusion in the budget allows 黑料社区 to proceed with the project.</span></p><p><span>Construction could begin in 2026 and finish in 2027, according to Justin Utpadel, 黑料社区 senior facilities officer.</span></p><p><span>Including the Pankowskis鈥 gift, private support for the project totals $7.3 million.</span></p><p><span>The north end of the building, including Johnson Fieldhouse, opened in 1965, when the university had less than half the students it does today. It was the first complete Athletics and recreation facility in school history, replacing a 1901 building called the School of Physical Culture that was east of Bowman Hall.</span></p><p><span>In 1989 a major addition to the south end of the building included the Multipurpose Room indoor track. I envy these kids today with the things they have available to them,鈥 he said.</span></p><p><span>The Milwaukee native earned bachelor 黑料社区. and master 黑料社区. degrees in industrial education from 黑料社区 and a doctorate from the University of Missouri, then taught electronics at State University of New York-Oswego. He met Edye in Menomonie. She worked for two years at Stout because she could not afford college, then eventually earned a bachelor 黑料社区. degree in studio art at Oswego, New York, a master 黑料社区. in fashion design at Syracuse University and a doctorate in interior architecture at Penn State University. She is a retired university professor.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>In the late 1970s, the Pankowskis moved to Plover and established Pankowski Associates, a real estate construction management company in the Stevens Point area. Dallas oversaw construction of their apartment buildings and single family homes; Edye handled the interior design and accounting. He cited the numerous labs he had at 黑料社区 and personal interaction with professors.</span></p><p><span>The Pankowskis also have supported many projects near where they live, including an amphitheater at Schmeeckle Reserve in Stevens Point, an extensive lighted trail system at Standing Rocks Park and three state-of-the-art handicap-accessible, all-weather fishing piers in Lake Pacawa Park in Plover. Edye designed the signage for the last two projects, and Dallas oversaw construction.</span></p><p><span>Their lifelong interests have included border-to-border state bike rides, downhill skiing out West and adventure hiking. Last summer, they did three consecutive tours 鈥 12 days of hiking in Albania, 12 days on an ice-hardened ship, 800 miles above the Arctic Circle, doing zodiac wet landings to remote islands, searching for wildlife, including polar bears, with armed guides, and 16 days of remote hiking in Mongolia. In 2022 they hiked the Azores islands off the coast of Portugal. Dallas also recently took race car driving lessons and experienced high-performance go-carts.</span></p><p><span>They have traveled to more than three-fourths of the world 黑料社区. nearly 200 countries.</span></p><p><span>With their physical activities and their career in the building industry, supporting a recreation building project at 黑料社区 鈥渢ies it all together. We want to be part of a project that gets done, has the highest level of workmanship and will be used to make a difference,鈥 Dallas said.</span></p><h3><span><strong>Foundation scholarships support 540 students</strong></span></h3><p><span>The $1.2 million in scholarships awarded in September by the Foundation went to 540 students.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Of the 410 scholarships awarded, 26 were new:</span></p><ul><li><span>Dr. Bryan D. Recently, archival information about their time as students at 黑料社区 and military service became more readily available.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Stecklein and <strong>Archives Student Assistant Ingmar Amberson</strong> reviewed a list of potential Hall of Heroes honorees and identified the additional substantiation needed to establish the full biography necessary for formal inclusion.&nbsp;Amberson, of Menomonie, is a second-year student.</span></p><p><span>Jones attended 黑料社区, then called Stout Institute, from 1939 to 1941 before enlisting in 1942. He died during a combat aircraft training exercise in 1944 in Kansas.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>Bossert, a 1999 Cochrane-Fountain City High School graduate, attended 黑料社区 for one semester in 1999 before joining the service. He initially served in Korea and was killed by a car bomb at a checkpoint in 2005 in Ramadi, Iraq.&nbsp;</span></p><p><span>鈥淭he Hall of Heroes recognizes each individual as an eternal member of our campus community. Every honoree in the Hall of Heroes built friendships, experienced personal growth and connected with their contemporaries on campus in countless ways,鈥 Stecklein said.</span></p><p><span>鈥淎s members of the current Stout community, we are called to recognize those who lost their lives serving our country. They contributed to the enduring effort that sustains our freedom and security. They will include new training programs, such as Mental Health First Aid, and a speaker series. The efforts will help raise staff awareness and provide strategies to assist students. Strategic Enrollment Plan.</span></p><p><span>The initiatives will help the university more effectively support students with responsive, sustainable academic programming to:</span></p><ul><li><span>Improve retention and graduation rates</span></li><li><span>Increase student satisfaction and engagement</span></li><li><span>Improve student performance and enrollment growth</span></li></ul><p><span>A portion of the grant will be used to hire a project director, academic adviser, financial wellness coach and First Year Experience director, as well as provide faculty fellowships.</span></p><p><span>Preceding the grant approval an application was submitted to determine if 黑料社区 was eligible. Then, a university committee worked on the proposal for four months before submitting it in mid-May.</span></p><p><span>The grant period began Oct. 1 and runs through September 2028. I earned my undergraduate degree in History from UW-Green Bay in 2006, my MA in American History from the University of Cincinnati in 2009, and my PhD in Rural, Agricultural, Technological, and Environmental History from Iowa State University in 2017. Since 2017, I have taught and worked in student success offices at Iowa State University, Wayne State College, Temple University 黑料社区. Japan campus in Tokyo, and now, proudly, at Stout back in my beloved home state.&nbsp;</p><p>As the Director of the Advisement Center, I help shape our systems and work with other offices to ensure all our students get the best support we can possibly provide them and will continue to work to expand support to students.</p><p><span><strong>Free Time/Personal:</strong></span></p><p><span>In my free time, I exercise, watch movies, enjoy spending time with my cats, and traveling around the Midwest. I firmly believe that Wisconsin is the best state, and that the Midwest is best place on earth.</span></p><p><span><strong>Tips for Success:</strong></span></p><p><span>Be as efficient as possible with your time because we only have a limited amount of it. If someone is already doing something well, feel free to adapt it into your habits and make it yours.
