Commencement is a time of celebration, reflection and anticipation. A tradition bringing �� students, families, friends, faculty, staff and supporters together.

It's a time for students to celebrate the accomplishment of earning their college degree. A time to reflect on their successes, struggles and steps on the journey that brought them to this moment. And the great anticipation of what's to come – a career, a higher degree or an embrace of the unknown.

Each semester, we ask a handful of inspiring graduates from Graduate Studies, the College of Arts & Human Sciences, and the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Management to share their Stout experiences, what brought them here and what's next. College is an important decision and graduating with a degree is an extremely rewarding experience. Whether you're completing coursework online or attending classes on campus, there may be times you have questions or are in a situation that requires assistance, such as:

Keeping Everyone Informed

The Dean of Students is one of the main points of contact for emergency incidents. Please follow the instructions below for connecting with your student or keeping the university informed of external situations that could impact your student's attendance.

Contacting a Student During a Family Crisis

Sometimes a family member might have difficulty contacting a student in a time of crisis, such as a medical emergency or a death in the family. All emergency inquiries during business hours should be directed to Dean of Students Office via phone at 715-232-1181 or via email. After hours, contact the University Police Department at 715-232-2222.

Student Crises & Absences

In the event of a short-term illness (less than 3 days) it is best for the student to contact their instructor directly. If the student is hospitalized or experiencing a difficulty that will keep them out of school for 3 days or more, please contact the Dean of Students Office via phone 715-232-1181 or via email. If a parent or family member is concerned about their student ��. health or wellness, please contact the Dean of Students Office.

A notification of student absences will be issued by the Dean of Students Office. Documentation is required. This notification does not change attendance policies put in effect by the instructor and is a courtesy memo only, letting the instructor know the whereabouts of the student. Using this process to determine excused absences and/or work assignments is determined by the instructor. It is the responsibility of the student to initiate contact with their instructor regarding any missed work or exams.

Campus Emergency Information

The university posts any large-scale campus emergency on our �� Alert Messaging System and website. Students will be notified by text message when there is an immediate threat to the health or safety of students.

Our Emergency Response Guide provides campus the tools to stay safe during emergencies.

Confidential Campus Health & Mental Health Resources

The Student Health Centre is conveniently located on North Campus and offers appointments for preventive and primary care needs as well as laboratory services, tuberculosis testing, and vaccines. Students can be seen for anxiety and depression and a consulting psychiatric provider is available 2 half days per month. Most services are included in the students segregated fees.

Student Health Centre

Counseling Center is staffed by licensed and trained counselors. It is located in Bowman Hall. Services offered include individual, couple, and group counseling. Alcohol education classes are offered also. There is no charge to students for this service.

You.uwstout.edu is a self-help and well being platform. YOU helps student navigate life and campus on their terms with independent goal setting, skill building, assessments and evidence based content on well-being topics. Through this web based application students can connect with a 24/7 crisis service available via call, text, or chat and can connect to Mantra teletherapy services which are available during the day, evenings, and on weekends.

�� Hazing Policy

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The University of Wisconsin-Stout is committed to promoting a safe and healthy campus environment, where individuals are free from hazing. The purpose of this policy is to define hazing at �� and establish requirements for hazing education, reporting, and response in accordance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act.

2.0 SCOPE OF POLICY

This Policy applies to all employees, registered student organizations (RSOs), students, student groups, and individuals who volunteer with RSOs and student groups.

3.0 DEFINITIONS

3.1 REGISTERED STUDENT ORGANIZATION (RSO):

A group, composed mainly of, and directed by, students, consisting of at least four students and an advisor, and which has filed all appropriate registration forms with the Involvement Center in the Memorial Student Center and been confirmed by the Involvement Center as meeting the eligibility criteria for registration, and is active and in good standing.

3.2 STUDENT GROUP:

A group of at least two students that is established or recognized by the university, but the group does not meet the definition of a registered student organization. Examples include, but are not limited to, athletic teams and club sports (e.g., varsity sports, intramural sports), military organizations, honor societies, musical or theatrical ensembles, university bands and club sports

4.0 STATEMENT OF POLICY

In compliance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act and Wis. Stat. § 948.51, �� defines hazing as any intentional, knowing, or reckless act against an individual that endangers the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health of that individual for the purposes of initiation or admission into, affiliation with, or the maintenance of membership in any organization or group and that causes or creates a risk of physical or psychological injury, regardless of the individual ��. willingness to participate.

5.0 CRITERIA

5.1 HAZING CAN INCLUDE, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO:

5.1.1 Brutality of a physical nature or the threat of bodily harm such as assault, whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to elements, sleep deprivation, confinement, or any other activity which could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.2 Forced consumption of any alcohol, food, liquid, drug, or other substance that could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.3 Soliciting a person to participate in or be actively involved in the planning of any act meeting the definition of hazing.

5.1.4 Any activity that constitutes the violation of university policies and/or federal, state, or local law (including ordinances of the City of Menomonie), or that causes another person to commit such a violation.

5.1.5 Acts that degrade, humiliate, embarrass, ridicule, or isolate such as requiring servitude, taking away cell phones or other devices, not allowing class attendance, requiring costumes or other apparel unless that apparel is part of a uniform for employment or a university or athletic program, confinement, or any other activity that could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.6 Causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing another person to perform sexual acts.

5.2 REPORTING

5.2.1 Campus security authorities as defined in Institutional Clery Act Compliance are required to report incidents of hazing to the university.

5.2.2 Allegations of hazing may be reported via the University of Wisconsin-Stout Incident Reporting Form

5.3 INVESTIGATION/REFERRAL

5.3.1 The Dean of Students Office is responsible for investigating and adjudicating allegations of hazing.

5.3.2 Individual students will follow student nonacademic disciplinary procedures outlined in Wis. Admin. Code UWS § 17

5.3.3 Registered Student Organizations will follow the disciplinary procedures outlined in Registered Student Organization Code of Conduct

5.3.4 Hazing allegations involving individuals who are not students will be referred to the appropriate office.

5.4 HAZING PREVENTION AND AWARENESS PROGRAMMING

5.4.1 Research-informed hazing prevention and awareness training will be made available to students, staff, and faculty. This training will include information about this policy and other applicable university policies, how to recognize and report hazing, and strategies for intervening when hazing is witnessed or known.

Degree: M.S. Training & Talent Development

Hanahh Eggum transferred to �� during her undergraduate years because it offered the only retail merchandising and management major in Wisconsin, which aligned with her career goals at the time. What she did not anticipate was how deeply �� would shape her personal and professional development, both while a student and after graduation.

Hanahh Eggum receives her master's hood and �� degree on Dec. 20, 2025.

Eggum earned her bachelor's degree in 2019 and worked in merchandising for a time before returning to �� in 2021 to manage the campus bookstore, StoutFitters. Her career then pivoted, and she went on to earn her master ��. in training and talent development. She is now the orientation coordinator and project manager for the Dean of Students Office.

“This degree has allowed me to deepen my passion for student development, leadership, and creating meaningful and impactful learning experiences. I want to help create the same kind of welcoming, supportive, and empowering environment for future students that I was fortunate enough to experience myself,” she said.

With the Dean of Students Office, Eggum coordinates orientation programming and family events, trains and oversees student staff, and supports large-scale transition initiatives for new students and their families. She manages projects that strengthen communication, improve operational processes, and enhance student experiences.

“At the heart of these responsibilities is my commitment to building community and ensuring that every new student who arrives at �� feels seen, supported and confident as they begin their journey,” she said.

Eggum earned her master ��. in training and talent development and crossed the commencement stage on Dec. 20 as one of 527 �� graduates, serving as commencement speaker for Graduate Studies. She plans to continue her career in higher education here at ��.

“Over the years, both �� and Menomonie have truly become my home. I’ve grown here, I’ve been supported here, and I’ve discovered who I am here,” she added. “The sense of community on this campus and in this town is incredibly strong, and it ��. something I deeply value. Staying at Stout feels meaningful because it allows me to give back to the very place that transformed my life.”

How do you hope to make an impact in your role?

My hope is to support and help students feel the same sense of belonging, purpose and encouragement that I found at ��. When I think about the mentors, supervisors, and peers who guided me, I feel a strong responsibility to pay that forward.

I want students to know they belong here, especially in the moments when life feels scary, overwhelming or uncertain. College isn’t just about the good days, it ��. about knowing you’re supported through the tough ones, too.

Whether it ��. through orientation programming, individual support, or helping student leaders grow in their own roles, my goal is to create an environment where every student feels welcome, included, valued and capable of thriving. My goal is to build experiences that leave a lasting impact, just as the people here at Stout did for me.

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

�� . polytechnic model has been essential in preparing me for a career centered on continuous learning, development and student success. The institution ��. emphasis on hands-on, applied learning has allowed me to blend theory and practice in powerful and practical ways. Working in Student Life Services both as a student leader and now as a professional has provided me with real, meaningful opportunities to apply coursework directly to my roles.

Concepts I studied through my courses focused on leadership, staff development, organizational culture, assessment, and strategic planning, directly aligned with the work I do every day. Applying those ideas and concepts in real time strengthened my understanding, sharpened my decision-making, and helped me grow as both a student and a professional.

I have been able to consistently connect my coursework to real challenges and initiatives on campus. That integration of learning and practice prepared me to contribute meaningfully to the student experience from day one.

My program didn’t just educate me, it elevated the work I was already doing and helped me become a more confident, capable and student-centered professional.

What stands out about your �� experience?

What stands out most is the way people at �� invest in students. I was encouraged, challenged, and supported in ways that reshaped my confidence and my sense of purpose. Faculty, supervisors, and colleagues consistently created spaces and provided opportunities where I could grow, whether through meaningful projects, leadership opportunities or honest conversations about my goals.

�� is unique because it doesn’t just develop students academically; it develops them personally and professionally. My experiences here helped me find my voice, discover my passions, my strengths and the confidence to pursue a path I never imagined possible for myself.

How did your involvement on campus impact your experience?

When I transferred to �� as an undergrad, I had no intention of making friends or getting involved. I knew that as a transfer student, I’d only be at �� for about two years and then go on to work in my chosen field, so truthfully, I didn’t see a point in getting involved.

Well, that clearly didn’t work out as I had thought. After one semester at ��, I became a resident advisor with Housing, and that role changed everything for me. It pushed me out of my comfort zone in ways I never expected. I went from being introverted, anxious about public speaking, and hesitant to connect with others, to finding a strong and supportive community that helped me grow into a confident leader.

As a resident advisor, and later a hall manager, I learned how to build communities, plan and coordinate events, support students through challenges, and serve as a resource and mentor. Those experiences taught me responsibility, empathy, communication and how to lead with purpose.

Working on and attending events and student-centered initiatives gave me a deep sense of belonging and helped me realize that I wasn’t just attending Stout, I was actually a part of Stout. Each leadership experience not only connected me more deeply to campus but also affirmed my passion for helping others, a realization that ultimately led me toward a career in higher education.

My time at Stout didn’t just build my résumé, it gave me a voice, a purpose and a home.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

Earning my degree while balancing full-time work, graduate studies and responsibilities outside of school was challenging. There were late nights, moments of doubt and times when managing everything felt extremely overwhelming.

But by relying on strong support systems, staying organized, and giving myself permission to grow through the hard moments, I overcame those challenges. These experiences strengthened my resilience and reminded me why I care so deeply about student support, because I’ve lived it.

I know how transformative it can be when someone believes in you and encourages you to keep going.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I am most proud of the personal and professional growth I’ve undergone over the years. I’m proud that I stepped into roles I never would have imagined myself in, speaking on stage, leading teams, planning large events and helping new students find their place at Stout.

I’m proud of the connections I’ve built and the moments where I’ve been able to support students in meaningful ways. Most of all, I’m proud and incredibly grateful that I have the opportunity to give back to the institution that gave so much to me.

�� has changed my life more than I ever expected. It helped me find confidence, purpose, friendship and a sense of belonging that truly shaped the trajectory of my future. I am incredibly grateful for every opportunity, every mentor and every moment of growth this campus has given me. It is an honor to serve this community, to support new students as they begin their own journeys and to carry forward the impact that so many people made on mine. �� will always be my home, and I will always be StoutProud.

As a procurement engineer at Automation Displays, Inc., in Eau Claire, Zaid Abdullah aims to continue growing in strategic supply chain management, operational excellence and process improvement roles and is committed to leveraging his Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification to lead initiatives that eliminate waste, optimize operations and deliver measurable value to organizations.

Abdullah was born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq, and moved to the United States in 2019. He became a U.S. citizen in May 2025. He was drawn to �� because of its reputation as Wisconsin ��. ��, with a strong emphasis on applied learning, hands-on experiences and industry-focused education.

“The polytechnic approach aligns perfectly with my career goals. �� blends classroom theory with hands-on, real-world application. The faculty, facilities, and collaborative environment have prepared me to make a meaningful impact with my master ��. in operations and supply management,” Abdullah said.

“Becoming a U.S. citizen, while completing my master ��. and applying Lean Six Sigma principles in my career, reflects the perseverance, determination and commitment that �� inspires in its students. Being a Blue Devil means carrying forward a spirit of innovation, hard work and purpose. I’m ready to contribute positively to my field and community,” Abdullah said.

At age 17, Abdullah qualified to work as an interpreter for the U.S. Army and Multinational Forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2003 to 2011, facilitating communication between U.S. military forces and Iraqi citizens. He also was a construction contractor, rebuilding barracks at the U.S. Embassy.

Abdullah has a bachelor ��. degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Technology in Baghdad. He earned his master ��. in operations and supply management and crossed the commencement stage on Dec. 20 as one of 527 �� graduates. He also aspires to serve the community as an emergency medical responder, contributing to public safety and emergency preparedness.

Zaid Abdullah is a procurement engineer at Automation Displays, Inc., in Eau Claire.

“Commencement represents a time of celebration, reflection and anticipation. It is a culmination of hard work and resilience and a moment to look forward to new opportunities,” Abdullah said.

“I am grateful to �� for providing an environment that fosters innovation, collaboration and excellence. My journey from Baghdad to Chippewa Falls has taught me the importance of perseverance, cultural understanding and community involvement. I look forward to applying these lessons in my professional career and community service.”

How do you hope to make an impact in your field?

I aim to make a significant impact by implementing data-driven strategies and Lean Six Sigma methodologies to improve supply chain efficiency, enhance quality and optimize operational performance.

My goal is to bridge the gap between engineering and management, ensuring that processes are not only technically sound but also strategically aligned with business objectives. Ultimately, I want to contribute to building resilient, innovative and sustainable organizations that deliver value to their customers and communities.

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

�� has prepared me exceptionally well through its hands-on, applied learning model. I particularly valued the collaborative projects and lab experiences where theoretical knowledge was applied to real-world problems.

While my professional experience has primarily been through full-time roles at Automation Displays, Fleet Farm and DHL Supply Chain, �� . master ��. in operation and supply management program ��. focus on applied research, data analytics and quality management has enhanced my ability to lead projects, optimize operations and implement continuous improvement initiatives effectively.

What stands out about your �� experience?

Several things stand out: the professors who bring real industry expertise into the classroom, the access to cutting-edge labs and applied research opportunities, and the collaborative environment that encourages problem-solving and innovation.

The university ��. commitment to preparing students for immediate career success is evident in its polytechnic approach and strong industry connections. Being part of a diverse and driven student body has also broadened my perspectives and enhanced my leadership skills.

Which student organizations or activities were you a part of, and which scholarships did you receive?

I have been actively involved in several leadership and community-oriented activities, and social justice and campus equity activities at �� and CVTC, including the Black History Month Gala, Civil Rights Pilgrimage, National Student Leadership Diversity Convention, Student Association at CVTC and the Diversity Resources Club. I volunteer at Central Lutheran Church Festivals and community events in Chippewa Falls.

I’ve received several scholarships, including the George C. and Gladys S. Decker Memorial Graduate Scholarship, the T Ingram Graduate Scholarship and the �� Transfer Student Scholarship. I was also awarded the Advanced Opportunity Grant from the Universities of Wisconsin.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

Moving to a new country, adapting to a new language and culture, and balancing full-time work with rigorous coursework were significant challenges. Additionally, I experienced unexpected financial setbacks when I lost eligibility for some scholarships after transferring to the graduate program.

I overcame these challenges through perseverance, effective time management and a commitment to continuous learning. My dedication to both professional and academic growth allowed me to remain focused and resilient.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I am most proud of successfully navigating an international transition while excelling academically and professionally. Becoming a U.S. citizen is a personal milestone that reflects my journey and perseverance. Completing my M.S. degree, achieving certifications such as the Lean Six Sigma Black Belt, and making a measurable impact on my professional roles are achievements I hold dearly.

With the intention of becoming a therapist, Ava Allroggen earned her bachelor ��. degree at the University of Minnesota-Morris in 2023. She studied psychology and human services, as well as philosophy.

Ava Allroggen was named 2025 Outstanding Student Leader of the Year in spring 2025.

“I found that those ancient thinkers were counselors in their own right,” she said. “When I had my graduate interview with ��, I was blown away by the authenticity and passion for the field that I saw in the clinical mental health counseling faculty. I knew there was something different about this program and that I had to be a part of it.”

For her outstanding leadership, involvement and service on campus, Allroggen was named a 2025 Outstanding Student Leader of the Year. She earned her master ��. degree in clinical mental health counseling and crossed the commencement stage on Dec. 20 as one of 527 �� graduates.

“My goal is to become fully licensed, keep learning, and establish roots in the community. We are all searching for the good life. I intend to help people find it,” said Allroggen, who is interviewing for prelicensed counselor positions across the Twin Cities and western Wisconsin.

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

I had the opportunity to intern with both the UW-River Falls counseling center and Vance Creek Experiential Therapy, an equine therapy barn in Clayton. At the end of each week, it was cool to swap out my business casual for faded jeans and muddy boots.

I learned so much from my supervisors and coworkers, but the people who taught me most were the clients. Both sites completely rocked my understanding of therapy for the better, and I’m a better counselor as a result.

What stands out about your �� experience?

Dr. Julie Bates-Maves led a study abroad in Lisbon, Portugal, that dramatically changed how I understand substance use treatment and drug policy. Julie connected us with professionals both on the policy level and those working directly in the field. I was fascinated to hear how these experts were working to make drug treatment more effective and humanistic.

I also enjoyed arguing about counseling theory with Dr. John Klem while I was pouring coffee behind the counter at Raw Deal. Never a dull conversation with that guy.

How did your involvement on campus impact your experience?

I was the graduate assistant for the Student Counseling Center ��. Wellness PROs, Peers Reaching Out, a peer health education program. Through my involvement with PROs, I got to work with the coolest, most enthusiastic team of undergraduates and supervising staff.

I developed an in-depth understanding of the issues faced by college kids, which prepared me to work with the students at my internship at UW-River Falls. In 2025, I am proud to say Wellness PROs took home the Student Staff Team of the Year at the 2025 Leadership Awards.

I was also active in the philosophy department at Stout. I attended Professor Xan Bozzo ��. community Philosophy Cafes, hosted through the Center for Applied Ethics. I appreciated being able to sneak away from my coursework for a while and indulge in my philosophical roots again.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

The semester my mom was in treatment for multiple myeloma was pretty difficult. However, I am lucky to have many wonderful people in my life who gave me a shoulder to lean on during this time. I’m most proud of my mom, who, after battling cancer throughout the last year, is officially in remission.

My advice for everyone? Take out your phone and tell someone you love them. Connection is all we have.

Inspiring Graduate: Karolyn Waldman (’25)

After earning her marketing and business education degree from �� in May 2019, Karolyn Waldman wanted to further her education and returned to her alma mater for a master ��. in career and technical education.

Waldman is a marketing and business teacher at Wausau West High School and serves as DECA & SBE (school-based enterprise) advisor, supporting students as they grow in their leadership, communication, and critical thinking skills and more.

“I love teaching at the high school level because my students are discovering their passions and beginning to choose classes that will lead them down a career path. Any time I am able to assist a student in that journey feels successful,” she said.

Waldman earned her master ��. in career and technical education and crossed the commencement stage on Dec. 20 as one of 527 �� graduates.

“I hope to make an impact by inspiring passion in students and helping them grow into well-rounded individuals. I always strive to spread kindness and build experiences for students to impact others around them and in their school community,” she said.

What drew you to �� for both your bachelor ��. and master ��. degrees?

Growing up, I always knew that I wanted to be a teacher. I always thought that I would teach math or English. In high school, I took an accounting class and fell in love with the subject, which led me to take many more business classes. I really looked up to my marketing and business teacher in high school. Ultimately all of these factors led me to want to become a marketing and business teacher.

When I began looking at colleges during high school, I toured a few of the UW schools, as well as a few private colleges. When I toured ��, I knew it was the right fit. My tour guide was saying “Hello” to people all throughout the day on campus. Being from a small town in Wisconsin, I loved the idea that I could build relationships like this on campus and that my professors would know me.

I came to �� for my master ��. program because I had an incredible experience at Stout for my undergraduate degree. �� was the obvious choice for a CTE degree. I was lucky enough to even have some of the same professors that I knew from previous classes. They go above and beyond. I am continuously impressed by how much they care about each and every one of their students.

How has �� prepared you to work in MBE and CTE?

I have fine-tuned much of my educational theory and learned many current CTE trends. Much of the work for my master ��. degree required a lot of reflection on my role as an educator. I always value intentional reflection on my practice.

One of the assignments was to create a career tree. I had to look back at the different careers that members of my family and extended family had. This was an eye-opening experience and helped me to understand outside factors that may play a role when a student is choosing a career.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

One of the challenges that I faced in earning my degree was finding the time to put forth into the work. I didn’t want to lack effort in the classes that I was paying to learn from. It ��. difficult to be in classes and have a full-time job at the same time. I worked through this challenge by making sure to schedule intentional time to read the material and write papers.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I’m proud of myself for pursuing and completing this degree. A master ��. degree was something growing up that I never thought was possible for me, and research was never a strength of mine. I was always extremely intimidated by the idea of a thesis, and therefore always ruled out the idea of a master ��. degree.

I’m grateful for the additional education, the professors that supported me along the way and my time at ��.

Luke Mertens chose �� for its polytechnic education and hands-on learning opportunities that would build his skillset through internships and industry-sponsored projects to make him career-ready before graduation.

Luke Mertens earned his manufacturing and mechanical engineering degrees from �� on Dec. 20, 2025.

Mertens earned a double major in manufacturing engineering and mechanical engineering and crossed the commencement stage on Dec. 20 as one of 527 �� graduates. He was hired before graduation as a controls engineer at SMC Ltd., a medical device contract manufacturer in Somerset.

“My main responsibilities will include designing electrical schematics, wiring control panels, and specifying electrical components for machines that will be built by the in-house automation department,” he said.

“I hope to make an impact in my field by contributing to complex problem solving and challenging what is possible in the world of automation.”

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

�� has helped make me an industry-ready undergraduate by offering hands-on learning and teaching me how to identify, break down and solve problems.

Luke Mertens was hired before graduation as a controls engineer at SMC Ltd.

My favorite lab experiences were my Controls and Robotics labs, where I learned all about industrial automation. My favorite internship was at Midwest Manufacturing in Eau Claire, where I worked as a manufacturing engineer and spent my time programming and troubleshooting automation.

I also completed a two-semester, industry-sponsored capstone project with a team of engineering students to build a pallet-lifting machine for Ashley Furniture. The machine can lift and hold 6-foot-long, 100-pound pallets off the ground until a stack of 12 is collected.

What stands out about your �� experience?

What stands out to me about the �� experience is how you are not just a number, but rather a person. I have thoroughly enjoyed many of my professors and the professional relationships I formed with them throughout my collegiate journey.

It was nice to take hands-on classes, where I always had resources available to help tailor my learning to what I needed and answer questions that I had.

The only thing that limits your growth at �� is your own individual willingness to learn. You will have all the resources you need to succeed.

How did your campus involvement impact your experience?

I was an offensive lineman with Blue Devils football for four years and was a part of football ��. FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) group for four years.

In the 2024 season, my fourth year, I was a team captain. I was also named to the second-team All-WIAC, with 11 of my teammates; and the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society, with 15 of my teammates.

I have been a part of Stout ��. Society of Manufacturing Engineers student organization.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

I am proud of my personal growth and my ability to adapt and overcome a variety of challenges, including my biggest: time management. Being as involved as I was in extracurricular activities made me prioritize how I spent my time.

After several years working in critical care nursing and later in a warehouse at Andersen Windows, Zachary Morgan realized he wanted to be on the side of improving systems, not just adapting to them.

Zachary Morgan earned his manufacturing engineering degree from �� on Dec. 20, 2025.

“�� . strong reputation for applied learning and industry partnerships is what ultimately drew me here to the manufacturing engineering program,” he said. “Years ago, I initially avoided Stout because I was intimidated by the math involved in engineering. I came back to school with a new perspective and a determination to learn.”

For excellence and achievements during his internships, Morgan, of Eau Claire, is a two-time recipient of the university ��. Outstanding Cooperative Education and Internship Program Student of the Year Award and the singular 2024 nominee for the National Co-op Student Achievement Award.

“As an engineering intern at Andersen Windows & Doors for three consecutive summers across two different plants, my responsibilities evolved each year as my skills and experience grew. Stout offered the perfect balance of hands-on experience and real-world relevance, and it became the bridge that allowed me to transform my career path,” he said.

Morgan earned his manufacturing engineering degree and crossed the commencement stage on Dec. 20 as one of 527 �� graduates. He is joining Andersen Windows & Doors’ Engineering Rotational Program, which will allow him to continue growing with a company he deeply respects.

“The program is designed to expose engineers to multiple facets of the business, from process optimization to product design and operations leadership. I see it as an ideal next step to strengthen my technical and leadership skills while discovering where I can make the greatest impact long-term,” Morgan said.

“I hope my story inspires others, especially those navigating career changes or self-doubt, to take that step forward. Growth happens when we lean into discomfort and keep learning,” he added.

How do you hope to make an impact in your field?

I hope to bring a human-centered perspective to engineering, designing systems that improve safety, reduce waste, and make daily work more manageable for the people who use them.

To me, meaningful engineering goes beyond solving technical problems; it ��. about empowering people.

I want to help create workplaces where efficiency and empathy coexist, where improvements benefit both productivity and the wellbeing of employees. Over time, I aim to contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, one that values collaboration, curiosity, and purposeful innovation.

How has �� prepared you for your field?

�� has been instrumental in preparing me for my career in manufacturing engineering. The university ��. applied learning model allowed me to translate classroom theory into practical experience through labs, simulations and hands-on projects.

Zachary Morgan is joining Andersen Windows & Doors’ Engineering Rotational Program.

Courses in lean manufacturing, capstone and quality engineering closely mirrored the work I did during my internships at Andersen Windows. Professors encourage not just technical mastery, but also communication, teamwork and leadership, skills that are critical in real industrial environments.

Stout taught me how to think critically, approach challenges methodically, and lead with both data and empathy.

What was your internship experience like at Andersen Windows & Doors?

As an engineering intern at Andersen Windows & Doors, I began by conducting time studies and waste assessments, which gave me a strong foundation in process analysis and data-driven improvement. In my following internship, I focused on enhancing efficiency within the Value-Added Services (VAS) mulling area, a crucial part of the company ��. customization process. This included developing a new rack system, redesigning the layout, and implementing 5S standards to improve organization and workflow.

Most recently, I designed and built a Statistical Process Control (SPC) dashboard that presented real-time quality data in a clear, intuitive way, empowering operators to make faster, more informed decisions and improving overall plant quality.

Through these projects, I learned that small, thoughtful changes can produce meaningful, measurable results. Most importantly, the experience taught me that lasting improvement comes from observation, collaboration, and the courage to question and refine existing processes.

What stands out about your �� experience?

What stands out most about my experience at �� is the incredible culture of support and mentorship. Professors here don’t just teach; they genuinely invest in their students’ growth and take time to connect classroom lessons to real-world applications.

A perfect example of that is when Dr. Slupe spent an hour and a half out of his busy workday helping me to troubleshoot CNC programming for a capstone project. It wasn’t during office hours, and I wasn’t even in one of his classes at the time; he simply wanted to help me learn. That kind of dedication exemplifies what makes Stout special.

The combination of strong academics, approachable faculty, and opportunities like internships, capstone projects and industry collaborations truly sets this university apart.

I’ve found tremendous value in team-based projects that mirror professional settings; those experiences taught me as much about leadership, communication, and adaptability as they did about technical problem-solving and design.

How did your involvement on and off campus impact your experience?

I was honored to be selected as one of �� . 2023 and 2024 Outstanding Cooperative Education and Internship Program Student of the Year Award recipients, and later as the university ��. nominee for the National Cooperative Education Student Achievement Award. These recognitions mean a great deal to me because they reflect not only personal growth but also the value of Stout ��. hands-on, applied learning approach.

Beyond academics, I’ve been actively involved in Celebrate Recovery, where I help facilitate group sessions that support individuals in their personal healing and growth journeys. I also volunteer with Fierce Freedom, a nonprofit organization that raises awareness about human trafficking and advocates for victims. They recently launched a new resource called Intersections, which provides powerful educational tools and community connections to combat human exploitation. It ��. an extremely impactful platform that I highly recommend exploring.

These experiences outside the classroom have helped me grow as a leader and advocate, strengthening my empathy and sense of purpose. They’ve reminded me that meaningful impact often begins not with large gestures, but with service, compassion and a commitment to helping others.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

Returning to school for a second degree while balancing work and life responsibilities was not easy. There were times when the coursework felt overwhelming, especially as I re-engaged with subjects like advanced math and physics after being away from academia for years.

What helped me push through was perseverance, mentorship and a mindset shift. I stopped striving for perfection and started focusing on progress. Support from professors, peers, and my family kept me grounded and motivated through every challenge.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I’m most proud of how far I’ve come in redefining my career and myself. I started this journey unsure if I could succeed in a demanding engineering program, and now I’m stepping into a profession that excites and challenges me daily. I’m proud not just of the technical skills I’ve gained, but of the resilience and confidence I’ve developed along the way.

I’m deeply grateful for ��, for Andersen Windows and for every mentor, professor and peer who encouraged me along the way. My journey has shown me that it ��. never too late to start over or to pursue something that feels out of reach.

Hired before graduation as a GaMra Composites engineer

Inspiring Graduate: Isaac Harnack (’25)

Hometown: Crystal, Minnesota
Degree: B.S. Plastics Engineering

In high school, Isaac Harnack, of Crystal, Minnesota, wanted to follow in his grandfather ��. footsteps and be a mechanic for tractors and large farm equipment. “I have always had a mechanically inclined mind, and machines just make sense to me,” he said.

However, after looking at different career prospects, Harnack ��. mom encouraged him to apply to ��, as one of her friend ��. sons had graduated from the packaging program.

“I took one look at the School of Engineering majors and stumbled upon the plastics engineering program. After seeing an injection molding machine for the first time, I knew that this was the path forward. I had never seen anything like it before and wanted to know its every function.

Isaac Harnack earned his plastics engineering degree from �� on Dec. 20, 2025.

“On top of this, Stout ��. polytechnic spirit drew me closer to the school, as every class is hands-on constantly, you aren’t just learning theory. Here, using industry-standard equipment is just another Tuesday. The fact that making mistakes is encouraged as a point of learning is what kept me here,” he said.

Harnack completed two internships: one at Graco, in Rogers, Minnesota, and one at RTP Company, in Winona, Minnesota. He earned his plastics engineering degree and crossed the commencement stage on Dec. 20 as one of 527 �� graduates. He is starting a new position as an engineer at GaMra Composites.

Harnack is fascinated by injection molding, which really boils down to two subcategories: making and designing the tools that run in the machines or processing the tools that run in the machines, he explained.

“I want to be a processing engineer, as the ‘thinking on your feet’ aspect is where I thrive. This would mean taking a tool and setting up machine parameters to run parts for my company or dealing with processing issues as they occur,” he said.

How do you hope to make an impact in your field?

Plastic is often given a bad rap, as most people only think about plastic as waste. However, it is a good alternative for making things cheaper and better for consumers if it is properly executed. If I can apply the skills I’ve learned in waste-saving measures to my company, it could have a global impact on our no-waste initiatives.

Because I am environmentally conscious, most of the projects that I undertook during my internships were about reducing waste in the injection molding or post-consumer recycling aspect of the process. This was achieved by putting waste product back into the injection molding cycle, which allowed the parts to be made more cheaply and with greater environmental consciousness.

Most people may not realize that plastic isn’t infinitely recyclable like aluminum, and it will break down over periods of time, so another project I got to work on was sourcing new additives to restore plastic ��. strength in the post-consumer recycling business. The main goal was to revitalize old plastic and help cut down on waste with new additives to restore chemical bonds.

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

Stout helped make my internships possible by having job fairs with applicable job sites for my major. The Midwest is a plastic manufacturing hub, and companies are constantly looking for students with plastic engineering experience under their belts. I was lucky enough to have two internship experiences.

Not all schools require an internship experience to graduate, which makes Stout students and graduates that much more desirable to companies.

For my Graco internship, the hands-on machining classes, the understanding of plastic polymers, and how the injection molding machines work really helped highlight my knowledge of these processes to my boss and fellow interns. However, because this was not a plastic-focused internship, I did a lot more manufacturing-style tasks, which opened my eyes to the other side of the engineering world and helped me better understand how that industry works. Instead of working on the processes, I was making tools to automatically remove parts from the machines and cut back on labor. This experience allowed me to understand what I can do to help other engineers have an easier time collaborating on projects with me. I have been in their position, and I know what I want to hear to solve the problem at hand.

At RTP, the global compounder, I showed my technical knowledge and skills that I gained at Stout. Out of the five interns at the company, I had the most hands-on knowledge of the processing aspects of plastic. This was highlighted by my ability to run extruders and injection molding machines with little to no training besides the mandatory safe operating training.

This really showed Stout ��. education compared to other schools’ education in terms of the hands-on knowledge that I brought to the table.

Because of my background, training time was shortened and allowed me to be more autonomous more quickly than other interns, to the benefit of my supervisors. I was the intern to five engineers, while the other interns only had one. Getting on my feet quickly and showing that I could handle a large number of tasks and complete them all within their deadlines really showed my skills effectively. Most plastic-related companies use RTP ��. custom-engineered polymer products. The fact that I had an internship with them has opened a lot more doors.

What stands out about your �� experience?

The biggest thing that stands out is the plastics engineering professors: Alex Jordan, Wei Zheng and Adam Kramschuster. They are all extremely knowledgeable and have different backgrounds in testing and analysis in plastic processing techniques.

I feel this is best highlighted in our capstone projects, which are the final experience as a Stout student. Plastics engineering typically has the best-researched and executed capstone projects, whose subjects range from a heavy testing and analysis focus to a processing focus. Each project is unique, and with it comes unique challenges and questions that, as a student, seem impossible for anyone to know anything about. Every time I talked with my professors about any issues I was having with my project, they would have the answers for me, or, once researched, show me how to properly execute the information I found. Their input on my project has been crucial to furthering my understanding of even the most niche topics.

Another standout experience is the community developed by professors and students, as having such a small and specialized major means that from freshman to senior year, all the people you graduate with are there with you every step of the way.

In terms of my favorite lab experiences, I really enjoyed our Injection Molding II class, where we got to work with manufacturing engineering students to design and machine our own injection molds. My partner and I engineered a golf tee for a simulator, and we had great success with molding our parts. Not many students get to have an experience like this, which really makes you stand out to potential employers.

How did your involvement on campus impact your experience?

As the program ambassador for the plastics engineering program, I am the lead lab assistant. My main goal is to keep the lab running and help with advanced research tasks put forth by the professors or help with lab improvements.

Just recently, we got the green light for four new 3D printers, which I had a major hand in helping acquire.

This was extremely beneficial to experience firsthand, as most companies have a lengthy process for equipment purchasing, and this experience was no different. Research, planning and ensuring we have enough space and resources available to support new equipment are all factors that play a part, and I had to prove that we could handle them.

I have received scholarships from regional plastic processing companies, which helped relieve some of the financial strain that college puts on a person. There are many internal and third-party scholarships available to plastics engineering students, even as freshmen. We are associated with the Society of Plastic Engineers (SPE), which has hundreds of national student scholarships available to any student who applies and meets the requirements.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

One of the hardest decisions I had to make was to take University Physics 2 over the summer because it did not fit into my class schedule. This is typically a five-credit class, and over a two-month period, you were expected to complete 40 hours a week of homework. On top of this large amount of homework, I was also working full-time, so for two months straight, I would come home from my eight-hour shift and open up homework for another four to six hours.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I am most proud of the fact that, in terms of my immediate family, I am the only one to have ever gone to an engineering school. On top of this, I have been able to maintain a consistent 3.7 grade-point average and have been placed on the Dean ��. List every semester.

Earning my plastics engineering degree is undoubtedly one of the hardest things that I have done in my life and seeing it through is what makes this whole journey worth it. It gives me great pride that I stuck with this path and saw it through.

Easton Sailer chose �� because it was close to home, for its excellent value and because his dad earned his master ��. degree here. He was also drawn to the university ��. strong computer and electrical engineering program.

“�� emphasizes hands-on learning and practical experience – something I value more than the traditional, theory-focused approach found at other schools,” Sailer said.

Easton Sailer earned his computer and electrical engineering degree from �� on Dec. 20, 2025.

“I aim to make a meaningful impact in my field by leveraging my expertise in both software and hardware to enhance system-level efficiency, enabling the development of larger, more capable systems that operate with lower power consumption,” he said.

He completed internships with nVent and Hewlett Packard Enterprises – two companies in the data center and high-performance computing sectors. “These experiences allowed me to apply my classroom learning to real-world engineering challenges, while contributing to meaningful projects in my field,” he said.

Sailer earned his CEE degree and minors in mathematics and computer science and crossed the commencement stage on Dec. 20 as one of 527 �� graduates. He was hired before graduation as an electrical hardware engineer at Hewlett Packard Enterprise in Chippewa Falls.

He plans to work in the industry for three to five years before returning to school to pursue a master ��. degree in computer and electrical engineering.

“Gaining real-world experience first will allow me to solidify my interests and make a more informed decision about my area of specialization. Currently, I’m especially interested in data centers and high-performance computing and the opportunities they offer for innovation,” he said.

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

�� has prepared me to work in my field by combining theoretical knowledge with hands-on lab experience, giving me a strong foundation in both understanding concepts and applying them in practical settings.

My favorite experience was in the Controls and Instrumentation Lab, a class where I learned to program PLCs and HMIs – skills that are widely used in the automation industry and directly relevant to real-world engineering applications.

I completed two internships that further strengthened my practical experience. At nVent, in Anoka, Minnesota, I was a controls/electrical engineering intern, working on high-density liquid cooling units for data center servers and performing pre-production testing to ensure units functioned correctly before mass production.

At Hewlett Packard Enterprise, I tested power components for future systems, developed evaluation plans for a new coolant distribution method for supercomputers and created programs to visualize signal integrity data.

What stands out about your �� experience?

What stands out most about my �� experience is the strong emphasis on hands-on lab work that complements theoretical learning, allowing me to apply concepts in practical settings.

I also greatly appreciate the professors, who genuinely care about the success of their students and are always willing to provide guidance. Additionally, the program ��. focus on internships ensures students gain real-world experience, which has been invaluable in preparing me for my career.

How did your campus involvement impact your experience?

I was involved in the IEEE (the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) student chapter for all four years of my studies. As a freshman, I participated as a general member, attending workshops to learn more about electrical engineering and explore different areas within the field. During my sophomore year, I was elected as the digital media coordinator, where I created advertisements for on-campus signage and managed the club ��. social media accounts to promote events and workshops.

In my junior year, I was elected president of the chapter, which allowed me to lead workshops, run board meetings, and collaborate with other officers to organize industry partner presentations and career development activities.

My involvement in IEEE significantly enhanced my college experience by helping me build leadership, communication, and technical skills, while connecting with peers and professionals in the industry.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

Throughout my bachelor ��. degree, I faced several challenges that ultimately helped shape me into a stronger engineer and student. Finding my first internship was especially difficult because, while I had hands-on experience as a maintenance technician at an injection molding factory, I lacked substantial engineering experience outside of the classroom. After months of persistence and continuous improvement of my résumé and interview skills, I finally secured my first engineering-related internship at nVent.

Another major challenge was our yearlong capstone project with VibeTech, a company developing vibration-based rehabilitation machines for nursing homes. Their openness to any possible solution meant our team had to carefully narrow down the project ��. scope to something realistic for two semesters, which taught us the importance of defining requirements early. We also had to develop strong team coordination and time-management skills to keep the project moving.

As the system architect, I was responsible for outlining how all components would integrate, identifying bottlenecks before they occurred, and ensuring the system ��. overall feasibility. These skills challenged me but ultimately made me a better engineer.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

Looking back, I am extremely proud of myself for finishing this program. If you had asked me in high school what I would be doing four years later, I would have guessed welding or electrical work. Instead, I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given and for the people who encouraged me to pursue engineering, allowing me to grow far beyond what I once thought possible.

Owen Pryga was encouraged to attend �� by friends who graduated from the university. “They pushed me to go to Stout for the polytechnic aspect, which they knew I loved. After finishing my first semester, I knew this was the place for me due to the hands-on nature of the classes,” he said.

Owen Pryga earned his cybersecurity degree from �� on Dec. 20, 2025.

He grew from the challenge of loneliness, being away from his family, to making fast friendships and even stepping into leadership roles, including serving as president of the Cyber@Stout student club and as a lead lab assistant.

Pryga earned his cybersecurity degree and crossed the commencement stage on Dec. 20, along with 527 �� graduates. He was hired before graduation as a consulting engineer with Heartland Business Systems.

“I hope to make the world a more secure place and to inspire others to learn more about the many aspects of cybersecurity. The problem-solving and troubleshooting required make me more passionate about the industry and spark joy in learning the unknown. I hope to help others find that same joy,” he said.

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

In a lot of classes, you never work alone; you always have a partner working with you. It was daunting at first, though as you take more classes, you bond pretty heavily with the people in your major and it is such a fun experience. Friendships and partnerships throughout made it all the better when working in labs. If you feel defeated, there is someone else with you working on the problem.

With the amount of collaborative work, Stout sets you up nicely for internships, as you will be working with teams of people. I had many internships, from the first one out of high school working at the help desk at a manufacturing company, to HBS as an engineering associate, where I helped customers shape their IT infrastructure around their business needs.

I am grateful to the people and teams I met, as they shaped me to be the person I am today, taking bits and pieces from every opportunity that came my way.

What stands out about your �� experience?

There are so many areas of Stout that stand out. First of all, Program Director Holly Yuan is such a passionate and driven individual. She really cares about the program and each and every student in it. She truly takes great care in ensuring the program sets students up for success after college and keeps up with people in the industry to ensure that the program is up-to-date, and the employers are happy with Stout graduates. She supports the students in a variety of ways, encouraging employers to hire Stout students throughout the semester, giving students hands-on work experience before they graduate.

You get to know each professor in the program, and you understand how special Stout is when you get into the industry.

Through internships and networking, I learned there are many Stout alumni within every IT team. No matter where you go, there is at least one person on the team that went to Stout.

How did your campus involvement impact your experience?

I had the fortunate opportunity to be president of the Cyber@Stout student club. They do anything related to cybersecurity, from hosting industry professionals’ presentations to student-led presentations. They also have a focus on cybersecurity competitions.

When I first became Cyber@Stout president, we only focused on one competition, the CCDC (Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition). That year, we took first in state and second overall in our qualifying group among 21 teams.

I am really proud of how the organization has grown in membership and expanded the number of competitions we work toward. I was able to grow my skills beyond the classroom; much of what I know was from preparing for those competitions. Apart from learning, those clubs allowed me to build lifelong friendships with many of the members.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them?

Many of my challenges were adjusting to living alone, being so far away from my family and friends back home. I did not know very many people when I first arrived at Stout, which, of course, made me scared I would not fit in.

I developed some pretty strong bonds with the people around me in my first club experiences and classes, so that issue of “fitting in” never came back.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

Some of the things I am most proud of were how I helped promote the program, in and out of the classroom. I met with people from large companies interested in helping Stout, a variety of individuals touring Stout, whether it was students or committees, and I even got the chance to meet a state congressman.

I have slowly been expanding the Cyber@Stout practice environment, making it grow with the organization and testing features I wanted to learn more about. We also had the chance to host a successful Capture the Flag cybersecurity event with a school in Kuala Lumpur.

I am just super grateful for the experiences I was able to be a part of. I met so many cool and interesting people, and I am hopeful to see where the program grows and where my career takes me from here. You don’t realize what you have done until you take some time and reflect back on what you’ve accomplished.
