Situation

Felker Brothers Corporation, a century-old industrial manufacturer, faced a common challenge in mature industries—how to innovate in a field where technology evolves slowly. By 2017, the company recognized it was stuck in a rut, with new ideas rarely progressing beyond management discussions. Seeking a structured path forward, Felker Brothers partnered with the University of Wisconsin-Stout Manufacturing Outreach Center (MOC) to transform its innovation process.

Solution

With the MOC ��. guidance, Felker Brothers established a formalized system for evaluating and implementing new ideas. Central to this transformation was the creation of a Product and Process Development Committee. This group, composed of high-potential employees, reviews submitted ideas, conducts research, and evaluates return on investment before passing proposals to a Risk Management Committee. This committee then assigns tasks and oversees execution.

Results

46 concept cards submitted and reviewed by the Risk Management Committee
- 12 were denied
- 34 advanced to various stages
Since adopting the new system, Felker Brothers has successfully completed approximately 20 projects, including process improvements, equipment upgrades, and personnel changes.
The structured approach has significantly enhanced innovation outcomes across the organization.

Situation:

Upon joining Sanmina Corporation, Plant Manager Gary Freiberg identified a critical need for employee development. After assessing organizational needs and gathering feedback, it became clear that the company lacked structured training and leadership development. This gap was contributing to high turnover, low morale, and underperformance. Drawing on previous successful experiences, Freiberg reached out to the �� Manufacturing Outreach Center (MOC) to implement the Training Within Industry (TWI) Job Relations (JR) and Job Instruction (JI) programs to rapidly enhance supervisory skills and leadership capabilities.

Solutions:

Sanmina partnered with the MOC to roll out TWI JR and JI across the organization. These programs were designed to build leadership capacity, improve communication, and standardize training processes. The initiative was embraced by employees and integrated into both onboarding and ongoing development efforts.

With expanding manufacturing space, new equipment, and rising sales, the company recognized the need to improve workflow efficiency and enhance workforce education. To address these challenges, Exodus Global partnered with the �� Manufacturing Outreach Center (MOC) to implement a Value Stream Mapping (VSM) initiative.

Solutions

Rather than tackling the entire organization at once, Exodus Global and MOC facilitators Nick Ford and Matt Wakefield focused on a specific area of operations. A cross-functional team was assembled to participate in the VSM process. Together, they physically mapped and walked through each step of the workflow to identify inefficiencies and sources of waste. Situation

Exodus Global reached a pivotal point in its growth. With expanding manufacturing space, new equipment, and increasing sales, the leadership team recognized the need for a structured approach to operational efficiency. They chose to implement a 5S program, beginning with their Shear Assembly shop.

Solutions

A cross-functional team of 10 employees was assembled to lead the initiative. During the Sort phase of 5S program, the team identified and removed over 70 unnecessary items, reclaiming approximately 200 square feet of valuable production space. The Set in Order phase followed, resulting in a more organized and efficient work environment.

Results

The results were both quantitative and qualitative:

Sales increased by 8.6%, generating an additional $369,000 in revenue.
Productivity improved by 20%, with a 50% reduction in shipping errors.
Production time decreased by 30%, and customers experienced a 75% reduction in application time.
Training efficiency improved, with new employees reaching 75% of performance benchmarks in just two days and 100% in six.

Beyond metrics, the initiative fostered a culture of ownership. Employees took pride in maintaining a clean and organized workspace, leading to more balanced assembly times and reduced variation. The improvements positioned Exodus Global to scale operations more effectively as demand increases.

A $647,000 grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) will allow University of Wisconsin-Stout ��. Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence – CAM-AI – to provide advanced manufacturing and AI support to small- and medium-sized manufacturers.

The newly announced grant is the result of ongoing conversations and the preexisting relationship between the WEDC, the State of Wisconsin ��. lead economic development agency, and ��, Wisconsin ��. ��.

“The WEDC financial commitment will allow �� to fully build out the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and AI,” �� Chancellor Katherine Frank said. “This investment will enable �� to expand its delivery of cutting-edge, industry-focused support and services to small- and medium-sized businesses throughout the state.”

��'s Industrial Robotics & Machine Vision Lab, part of the Robert F. Cervenka School of Engineering, is one of the campus labs that will benefit from the WEDC investment.

“Wisconsin has long been a manufacturing powerhouse, especially in the field of precision manufacturing,” said Missy Hughes, secretary and CEO of WEDC. “For our state ��. small- and medium-sized manufacturers to remain competitive in the global marketplace, it ��. absolutely critical for them to be able to harness the power of AI in their daily operations. CAM-AI is in the spirit of the Wisconsin Idea – helping businesses and residents access the knowledge and resources of the Universities of Wisconsin to keep our state moving forward.”

Seth Hudson, �� . executive director for Corporate Relations and Economic Engagement, said the funding will allow the university to invest in state-of-the-art equipment to expand and enhance the services of CAM-AI. “This investment will allow us to further contribute to the growth of our industry partners through advanced manufacturing techniques and AI-driven solutions,” he said.

Next gen manufacturing: New CAM-AI will leverage resources to support industry in Wisconsin

Small and midsize manufacturers in Wisconsin and Minnesota have a new resource — and ally — in their quest for growth and success.

David Ding, director of the Robert F. Cervenka School of Engineering and an associate dean in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Management, said the grant will allow �� to fully build out an Automated Demonstration line, enabling the university to showcase to its industry partners the applications of automation, robotics, vision inspection and AI-aided manufacturing. “The demonstration system will showcase the new technologies that CAM-AI can help manufacturers implement in their own processes,” Ding said.

CAM-AI was created in 2024 to leverage the broad array of university expertise for solving technical issues and conducting research to support private industry. The center works in partnership with the �� Manufacturing Outreach Center, one of two centers in Wisconsin affiliated with the National Institute of Standards and Technology/Manufacturing Extension Partnership national network. The Manufacturing Outreach Center, which also receives support from the WEDC, delivers comprehensive, proven solutions through consulting, training and workforce development.

Once fully operational, the WEDC investment will allow CAM-AI to serve approximately 20 companies and 100-plus students each year.

The Dental Crafters Network was experiencing organizational growth. Individual performers were engaged and competent as high performing technicians, and now were tasked with leading others. Leadership knowledge and skill development was essential for the next generation of leaders in the organization.

Solutions

The company was seeking a resource that brings leadership fundamentals to nurture the emerging leaders, a program that brings real experiences of leading in manufacturing. The Manufacturing Leadership Series (MLS) - Tier 1 provides a foundation for developing leadership skills where the focus is on people. The delivery structure is in 4-hour blocks, once a week for 6 weeks, at the client ��. facility, The 10 participants were engaged in classroom and one on one development, engaging an applied learning format with facilitators. The Manufacturing Outreach Center (MOC) staff observed consistent methods, as the participants grew and gained confidence. The MLS trainng was set up to develop and apply scenarios from real world manufacturing knowledge to apply the skill sets needed.

Situation

In the Fall of 2023, the leaders of Innovative Industries recognized the business growth and future will be directly impacted by the frontline leaders. “The goal was to grow the business while retaining and developing the current staffing levels”, stated Innovative Industries President, Andrew Hessedal. The Manufacturing Leadership Series (MLS) fosters a presence of engagement to the culture. Innovative Industries identified that improving communication was critical to their organization and thought the MLS training would be beneficial to their workforce. For the company ��. leadership, choosing to elevate individuals of various educational and social backgrounds within the corporation meant that while their experience and knowledge was valuable, it did not mean they would be able to share it effectively and efficiently. Following their work on MLS with the MOC, Innovative Industries leadership decided that the communication training will be part of their yearly employee investment process.

Solution

11 employees from Innovative Industries, including department supervisors, shop, and office staff participated in the Manufacturing Leadership Series (MLS) Training in October of 2023. Prior to the training, an assessment was made of the Key Performance Indicators which serves as a benchmark to measure the effectiveness of the people, processes, and technology. The MLS Training took place in 6, half-day sessions. The first four were conducted in a classroom setting and the last two were conducted on the floor alongside employees, helping them to apply the skills they learned in the class.

Results

Employee Retention: Over 95%
Increased/Retained Sales: Cost of goods sold decreased, sales increased which yielded higher profits.

Situation

Prior to working with the Manufacturing Outreach Center, Chaseburg had purchased a powder coating line, but they weren’t sure how to implement the new equipment efficiently. They connected with the MOC and were guided through a Value Stream Mapping exercise to better understand their flow and how the new powder coating line would fit in.

Solution

Through the Value Stream Mapping exercises, Chaseburg was able to better understand the flow and how different production areas interact with each other. The program also gave the company direction on how to lay out the production line to provide the most efficient output.

Results

• Reduced inventory by over 30 percent in two months, with plans for a 60 percent reduction
• Increased productivity from 400 to 800 units per week
• Improved communication from the office to the floor reducing the number of touches between office and production people
• Dramatic reduction in lead-time by bringing technology in-house they were able to reduce lead-time by 60 days

The �� Manufacturing Outreach Center (MOC) has worked with Bending Branches for over 20 years. From becoming a Lean manufacturer in the early 2000s, to the outdoor industry boom of COVID in 2020, the MOC and Branches have had a long-standing relationship.

Solutions

The ExporTech program has helped Branches grow their international sales by developing an international growth plan, making key connections to resources in the export community, and implementing their plan. Services and grants offered in the program have allowed Branches to do things that they would not have done otherwise. This has had significant impacts on growing their business, opening 24 new international retailers, and selling in 28 different countries.
