STEAM camps offer nearly 275 area middle, high school students hands-on preview of education at ��goersab July 2, 2024

They discover career paths in microbiology and genetics; develop innovative patterns in fashion design

For two weeks in June, 118 area high school students stepped into campus labs at �� and learned what it ��. like to be a student at Wisconsin ��. ��.

In hands-on learning experiences led by faculty, they discovered career paths in science, technology, engineering, and art and design during �� . Summer STEAM Experience.

The weeklong camps highlight the value of creativity and critical thinking in genetics; graphic design and printmaking; fashion; film making; metalwork; video game design and other disciplines.

Students interested in the cellular makeup of the human body and the fashions that cover it joined Professor Mike Bessert in a Jarvis Hall Science Wing biology lab and Lecturer Sarah Eileen Smith in the Maker's Lab in Fryklund Hall.

In Bessert ��. Microbiology: Genetics and DNA Analysis camp, 19 students used a diverse array of lab technology to gain skillsets they can apply in biochemistry, forensics or health fields.

They collected DNA field specimens and used various techniques to copy and study DNA and discover how scientists solve problems within DNA.

“This camp gives the students a taste of what it ��. like to be a biology student here at Stout,” said Bessert, program director of P.S.M. conservation biology. “Similar to the Molecular Cell Biology college course, the goal is for them to become familiar with some of the most prominently used DNA extraction and quantifying techniques used in the field.”

Their hands-on introduction to patternmaking included draping fabric on 3D dress forms and sketching professional fashion figures.

“They’re all doing great,” Smith said. “They’re doing exactly what our first-year fashion students practice in the Pattern Development course in their first week at Stout.”

Nearly 115 students entering grades six to eight will join the Junior STEAM Experience this summer, a series of specialized camps with hands-on experiences in Chain Making, Fashion Design Drawing, Storytelling and Video Production. Thirty-eight students will participate in a new Video Game Design Week.

Two steps closer to their careers in genetics and forensics

On the third day of camp, after collecting samples of their own hair follicles, Bessert walked his students through a two-step polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, optimization technique – a gradient thermal cycle to find the perfect temperature to view the strongest signal of DNA markers, or alleles, in the human genome.

They then used gel electrophoresis to visualize and analyze the DNA markers. At one end of the gel, an electric current is applied to pull DNA fragments through the gel. It is a technique the FBI uses to help identify people through genetic traits, Bessert said.

In another activity, Bessert and the students collected deer tick specimens from animals at the Dunn County Humane Society to see if the samples contained the borrelia bacteria that causes Lyme disease.

Bright, a Chippewa Falls junior, wants to be a geneticist. She discovered the concept of genealogy when she was 12, when she compared her and her sister's traits with their parents’ and noticed the difference in the color of their eyes.

Mitchell, a first year at Stanley-Boyd High School, became interested in forensic science watching TV with her mom and after completing a school project on genealogy.

Alyxandria Lunemann, a Bloomer High School senior, has always loved science. She was looking into future careers in chemistry “but it didn’t fit the description of what I had in mind,” she said.

Then when Lunemann talked with a professor who explained their research on the makeup of fruit flies and yeast and possible mutations in genes, she thought, “This is what I want to do. Mutational genetics is the study of the human genome and mutations within it, such as gigantism, dwarfism, albinism or sickle cell anemia,” she said.

“I feel that Stout ��. STEAM camp is a good representation of what it will be like researching in a genetics lab. I’m glad to be here.”

Fashion inspiration through exploration

During an exploratory draping time, Smith encouraged her students to play with fabric to see how it laid over the dress forms, how it can be shaped, and to experiment creating pleats and ruffles. Her only parameter for them was that their dress must be sleeveless or strapless.

While drawing their designs, Smith asked students to pay attention to and accentuate body shapes. They looked for inspiration in images in her slideshow presentations and on their phones, referring to current and classic fashion trends, movies, books, nature and even architecture.

“Be intentional with each aspect of your design, just as each aspect of architecture in a building or branch of a tree has its function,” she said.

Three of the students – Annella Wolbert, Samantha Anderson and Addison Bauste – will be first-year students this fall at Menomonie High School. They joined the fashion camp because they are inspired by the creative of clothing. This was their first time draping and drawing fashions.

While draping the 3D forms, Wolbert ��. inspiration was to go with the flow and see where the fabric led her. Anderson ��. design was inspired by Taylor Swift ��. Grammy outfit – a corset gown with a high leg slit and train.

Bauste ��. sketches, including a blue and pink gown with a heavy shoulder ruffle, were inspired by “The Summer I Turned Pretty” book series and a mix and match of outfits she saw online.

Wolbert and Anderson have sewed before, creating pillowcase dresses with their Girl Scouts troop for Little Dresses for Africa. They are working toward earning their Silver Award with their troop and have made 50 dresses in the last two years.

�� . STEAM camps, which attract students from around Wisconsin, are sponsored by the Menomonie and Chippewa Falls school districts, Parker, OEM Fabricators and Delta Fastener in partnership with Continuing Education and Conferences, a unit of Ed ucational Pathways and Outreach.

�� Athletics is offering multiple summer youth sports camps led by university coaches, staff and student athletes. Camps include basketball, football, gymnastics, soccer, softball, track, volleyball and dance.

Stout Adventures’ Youth Climbing League offers introductory activities, designed to empower kids ages 6 to 12. Experienced instructors lead activities for all skill levels. Two sessions will be held from Tuesday, June 11, to Wednesday, July 17; and Tuesday, July 23, to Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Hands-on creative, athletics experiences geared for middle, high school students

This summer, middle and high school students can discover exciting career paths in science, technology, engineering, and art and design, while nurturing creativity and critical thinking skills or improve their athletic skills at a variety of youth camps led by �� faculty and coaches.

Children can ignite their curiosity, creativity and passion for learning in a supportive and engaging environment with opportunities at the popular Summer STEAM and Junior STEAM camps, as well as two new camps in Video Game Development and Theatre, and several sports and recreation camps.

Youth Camps & Programs

��'s youth programs provide engaging academic and athletic experiences designed to inspire young minds and encourage active lifestyles.

Junior STEAM Experience

Junior STEAM Experience, for students entering grades six to eight, offers two sessions:

Exploration Camp, Sunday, June 16, to Thursday, June 20: Campers will embark on an all-in-one experience through various STEAM disciplines, including 3D Printing, unravel the mysteries of Genetics/DNA Analysis, delve into the world of Unhackable Quantum Codes, and unleash their creativity in Video Production and Video Game Design. They’ll also gain team building skills conquering the outdoor Challenge Course.
A series of specialized camps, Sunday, July 7, to Thursday, July 11: Campers can dive deeper into the subjects that interest them most, including Chain Making, Fashion Design Drawing, Storytelling and Video Production.

Summer STEAM Experience

Summer STEAM Experience offers a diverse array of weeklong sessions in June for students entering grades nine to twelve, designed to engage and provide hands-on learning experiences. Activities and a college student panel will provide experiences that highlight the value of creative and critical thinking.

High School STEAM Summer Camps

Inspiring and engaging STEAM camps for students entering grades 9-12

Students can choose from 10 unique tracks in a variety of STEAM disciplines.

Sunday, June 9, to Thursday, June 13:

Graphic Design and Printmaking: Students will explore graphic styles, typography design and how to print designs using ink and hand presses. They will create their own plant/letter poster and participate in a print exchange with campmates.
Metal Work: Explore the unique medium of enameling. Students will create a variety of 2D and 3D works as they learn techniques for using powdered and liquid enamel, including stenciling, drawing, painting, photo decal and raku pottery.
Roleplaying, Worldbuilding and Storytelling: Storytelling and imaginative play go hand-in-hand. Students will create characters, sketch stories and build worlds. Participants will create a variety of written works for their creative portfolios.
Video Production: Learn to make a movie, from scriptwriting to production to editing to the big screen. Students will use industry-standard software and prepare a final film for screening in �� . historic Harvey Hall Theatre.

Sunday, June 23, to Thursday, June 27:

Acting: Explore new performance avenues by learning to develop characters and theatre techniques, comedy improvisational skills and stage combat techniques.
Fashion Drawing and Draping: Students will bring their fashion designs to life by learning to sketch professional fashion figures and then translate their sketches to fabric on a 3D form. Students will showcase their designs at the end of the week.
Microbiology: Genetics and DNA Analysis: Discover the world of molecular biology and how scientists solve problems with DNA – from population studies to forensic identification to medical screening.
Video Game Design: Students can level up their skills and learn the end-to-end process of creating video games using professional techniques and tools. Students will play-test their games with the class, family and friends at the end of the week.

Friday, June 21, One-Day Theater Experience: Experience a play in a day from brainstorming ideas to creating a production.

Sunday, July 14, to Thursday, July 18, Video Game Development: Students will bring their game ideas to life and dive into coding, creative writing, game design and concept art.

Cost is $495 for overnight campers, who’ll stay in the residence halls; and $345 for day campers. Menomonie and Chippewa Falls students’ cost is covered by their district, and scholarships are available for others as well. Contact Continuing Education for more information.

Top Talent Initiative award recognizes special skill-building, discovery camps and events

With a 99% employment rate for bachelor ��. and master ��. degree graduates, �� is known for developing talent in multiple fields to support the economy of west-central Wisconsin and throughout the state.

The university also invests heavily in the talent pipeline before students get to college, with numerous special programs to help youth begin considering in-demand career fields via higher education. Those efforts for “potential future impact” have earned �� a Top Talent Initiative award from Momentum West, which promotes economic development in the region.

The award was one of nine presented March 21 during Momentum West ��. annual meeting held at �� . Memorial Student Center. The recipients were “individuals and organizations that have made a significant impact over the past year,” said Executive Director Steve Jahn.

The university programs for youth that promote career discovery, skill development and higher education opportunities include:

Summer STEAM camps for high school and middle school students, which include workshops in science, technology, engineering, art and design, and mathematics.
STEM Fest for students in Upward Bound programs at high schools in northwestern Wisconsin.
DECA District 1 skills competition, held each January, for high school marketing and business students.
SkillsUSA, held each February, to promote technical and leadership skills.
Teach Day, held each spring and fall, for high school students interested in the teaching field.
Fostering Success, which provides an on-campus experience and tours for 13- to 17-year-olds in foster care who are interested in higher education, while supporting college students who were in foster care.

This summer, middle and high school students can discover exciting career paths in science, technology, engineering, art and design, and improve their athletic skills at a variety of camps led by �� faculty and coaches.

The opportunities include Summer STEAM, Junior STEAM and a new STEM-X camp and several sports and recreation camps.

STEM Experience (STEM-X)

STEM-X helps underrepresented and underserved high school students prepare for and succeed in their college careers. It is a free overnight camp, running Sunday, June 25, to Wednesday, June 28, providing hands-on experiences in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

Campers attend workshops to help develop their study and leadership skills and learn about campus resources, such as academic Advisement, Career Services and Financial Aid.

STEM-X sponsors and partners are 3M, and �� . Multicultural Student Services, Educational Pathways and Continuing Education and Conferences.

Junior STEAM Experience

Junior STEAM Experience, for students entering grades six to eight, will run Sunday, June 18, to Thursday, June 22. Hands-on activities will be led by faculty, teaching assistants and camp counselors.

They’ll rotate through nine sessions: 3D printing; engineering and technology; industrial design; interior design; chain making; genetics and DNA analysis; photo and video; unhackable quantum codes; and video production.

Middle School STEAM Summer Camps

Summer STEAM Experience will offer 11 unique tracks available over two weeks. / ��

Summer STEAM Experience

Summer STEAM Experience is doubling its offerings this year for high school students, with 11 unique tracks available over two weeks: Sunday, June 11, to Thursday, June 15; and Sunday, July 9, to Thursday, July 13.

Campers may register for one or both weeks. Camp activities and a college student panel will provide experiences that highlight the value of creative and critical thinking. About 120 students are anticipated for both weeks.

Registration for the STEAM experiences will open Saturday, March 11. Cost is $475 for overnight campers, who’ll stay in the residence halls; and $325 for day campers.

High School STEAM Summer Camps

Inspiring and engaging STEAM camps for students entering grades 9-12

Week One (Sunday, June 11—Thursday, June 15)

Video Production, with Lecturer Jonny Wheeler: Campers will learn how to tell a story from script writing to planning shots to capturing professional-quality video. At the end of the week, students will screen their short films on the big screen in the university ��. Harvey Hall Theatre.
3D Animation, with Senior Lecturer Jesse Woodward: Campers will use the same software used by Disney Animation Studios, working together to produce an animated short film that will be featured online.
Web Design, with Assistant Professor Kris Isaacson: Campers will learn about design and layout best practices for websites, brainstorming ideas for their own interactive website project, while learning HTML and CSS — the building blocks of web development.
Video Game Design, with Lecturer Karl Koehle: Campers will learn the end-to-end process of creating video games and the many skills needed to bring a game to life, from sketching levels and characters to animation, programming logic and sound effects. At the end of the week, they will play-test a game of their own creation.
Explore 3D Printing and More, with professors Wei Zheng and Alex Jordan: Campers will learn to design and manufacture plastic and wood products and explore the high-demand plastics engineering profession.
Digital Storytelling, with Associate Professor Mitch Ogden: Digital storytelling blends creative writing, story exploration and media production. Campers will generate story ideas and construct digital stories, like web-based interactive stories (choose-your-own-adventure), gamification of stories, podcasts or audiobooks and multimedia stories.

"Web design is for people who are creative, like puzzles, problem-solving and technology. It combines designing layouts, playing with colors and the logic of coding," Isaacson said. "If you’re interested in computer programming, this is a friendly way to get started. Each student will leave camp with a working multi-page website that they design and build from scratch. Students will learn how to become creators of content on the web instead of just consuming what others have done."

Week Two (Sunday, July 9—Thursday, July 13)

Industrial Design/Product Design, with Professor Jennifer Astwood: Campers will explore the process of developing and designing a light, from sketching, to learning Adobe Illustrator, to prototyping using a laser cutter.
Enameling on Metal: Grit, Gloss and Finish, with Lecturer Rose Schlemmer: Campers will learn the basics of how to enamel on metal using techniques such as sgraffito, stencils, image decals, and champlevé and will create an artwork of their own.
Furniture Design, with Lecturer Cassie Savela: Campers will learn the design process and 3D modeling software to create a set of 2D and 3D technical drawings of their very own custom table, chair or bench. Drawings will be collected into a personalized 10- to 15-page process book to present at the Camper Showcase.
Interior Design, with Assistant Professor Nicolette Brehm: Campers will design a living space for their favorite celebrity, learning the design process, concept development, how to draft a floor plan to scale, create a color palette, and make finish and furniture selections for a final presentation.
Genetics/DNA Analysis, with Professor Michael Bessert: Campers will explore the world of molecular biology by collecting specimens from the field, extracting and quantifying DNA and use techniques to copy and analyze DNA to answer questions and solve problems.

Brehm thinks that students who are “highly creative and also technically inclined would excel in the Interior Design course. Interior design is a field where these worlds overlap,” she said. “Students that are interested in how people can be affected by their interior environment would also enjoy the course.”

The STEAM programs are sponsored by the Eau Claire and Menomonie school districts, Xcel Energy and Parker in partnership with Continuing Education and Conferences.

Opportunities in STEAM, athletics, music and adventuring abound

Erika Saindon is an artist. The upcoming senior at Albert Lea High School, in Albert Lea, Minn., loves working on anything from digital to traditional art. Last spring, when she was deciding on what to study in college, she considered her interests in graphic design, animation and art education.

Saindon ��. mom, Therese, works with graphic designers who graduated from ��, which offers such programs in its School of Art and Design and School of Education.

“My parents knew that Stout was somewhat of a very artsy technical school, so they looked into a summer program for me and came across STEAM,” Saindon said.

The Summer STEAM Experience, which was held in June, invited high school students to discover career paths in science, technology, engineering, art and math with guided activities led by �� faculty. This summer ��. camp was back to being in person.

It ��. been a busy summer on campus, with approximately 800 elementary, middle and high school students attending 10 different overnight camps and clinics. Athletics hosted an additional 900 campers, and a WiFab training series brought in 15 teachers and instructors from across the state.

The Summer STEAM Experience welcomed 76 campers and 90 campers joined Junior STEAM for a variety of learning tracks.

It was at STEAM where Saindon met Vanessa Stephens, an upcoming senior at Ellsworth High School from Hager City. Stephens is interested in computer science.

This was their first time attending the camp. Saindon and Stephens enjoyed meeting new people from new places, connecting with camp counselors and learning the animation process. They quickly became friends and are looking into attending �� in fall 2023.

“We both had made friends in our track but they were day campers,” Stephens said. “At the first meal, Erika and I sat by each other and just started talking. We did arts and crafts together every day and had lots of time to talk. We learned we have a lot in common and are very similar people.”

Saindon and Stephens joined about 24 other campers in the 3D Animation track led by Senior Lecturer Jesse Woodward. Campers created animations using the same industry-standard software used by Disney Animation Studios.

They learned the basics of 3D animation, including the 12 principles of animation, and how to create movement in different kinds of characters, like a bouncing ball and a pendulum. They then animated a simplified squirrel using the previous exercises to help them. Woodward gives similar assignments to his university students, he said.

“Throughout, I wanted my students to understand that animating does not mean to just move something on a screen. It ��. about giving life and character to what you animate. When working in their teams, they also had the opportunity to see how an animation pipeline works and learn how to work together in a technical but creative environment,” Woodward said.

Campers also decorated T-shirts, and Saindon showed her drawing skills, covering their shirts in quotes, her beliefs and new friends’ portraits.

“Sometimes I'm not really even thinking while I'm drawing. I just move my pen and hope it turns out. My entire process is just to make a mark and see what happens,” Saindon said.

STEAM is coordinated through the university ��. Professional Education Programs and Services. Other STEAM tracks were 3D Printing, Comics: Creative Nonfiction, Enameling on Metal, Interior Design and Metalsmithing and Jewelry.

Fostering Success Camp for youth

The Fostering Success Camp is for youth ages 13 to 17, who are in out-of-home care. The camp offers an opportunity for attendees to experience college on the �� campus with other foster youth from across the state.

“The camp is an important part of creating an educational pipeline for foster youth interested in pursuing higher education,” said Angie Ruppe, director of Student Support Services and Fostering Success, which partners with high schools across Wisconsin.

“Over the years, we have provided this experience for nearly 100 youth across Wisconsin.”

The camp took place June 17-18, for 10 registered campers. Attendees identified their personal strengths, learned about financial aid and scholarship opportunities, and attended presentations on opportunities that exist post-high school, including technical education, four-year degrees, military and job corps.

They also met with Peer Mentors, �� students and former foster youth, who led small group discussions and joined in activities like the outdoor ropes course for team-building skills.

Blue Devil Athletics and Stout Adventures camps

Men's Basketball Camp / Blue Devil Athletics

Blue Devil Athletics camps and clinics this summer were held on campus by the Blue Devil men ��. and women's basketball, football and gymnastics programs. Coaches and student athletes, ranging from elementary students to elite high school athletes.

At outlying camps across the country, Blue Devil coaches and student athletes served more than 5,700 summer campers.

Stout Adventures held three camps at their indoor and outdoor facilities led by experienced instructors. Ropes Course Exploration camp is a four-day camp for ages 10 to 14, where kids work on communication, teamwork, problem solving and confidence building.

Story Time and Climb families / Stout Adventures

Youth Climbing League is an introductory program for ages 6 to 13, open to all skill levels and experience. YCL is designed to empower kids and introduce them to the sport of climbing.

And for Story Time and Climb, Stout Adventures partners with the University Library, inviting kids ages 2 to 5 for a story, activities in the climbing wall space, working on fine motor skills and interacting with others.

From July 25-28, �� hosted the Apple Valley (Minn.) Eastview High School marching band. While the camp was self-instructed, the university provided housing, meals and practice space for the nearly 200-member band at Don and Nona Williams Stadium.

The Summer STEAM Experience runs from Sunday, June 12, to Thursday, June 16. Students entering grades 9 to 12 are invited to explore career paths with �� faculty in a campus setting, with experiences that highlight the value of creative and critical thinking.

The Junior STEAM Experience, for students entering grades 6 to 8, runs from Sunday, June 19, to Thursday, June 23. Students will explore STEAM courses through hands-on activities and games.

The STEAM experience for older students offers six tracks, while the Junior experience offers five tracks, with the guidance of �� faculty, teaching assistants and camp counselors.

“Students have a story to tell. Film is all about stories,” Wheeler said. “This summer, I will be working with students to help find new ways for them to creatively tell their own stories by constructing a visual narrative through video.

“Project-based learning is the backbone of the class and gives students an authentic experience by disseminating work outside of the classroom. For movies, that means a screening in a theater. We’re lucky here at Stout to have the beautifully historic Harvey Hall Theatre, where students can watch the films they’ve created; it ��. inspiring just to be in that space.”

Programs explore arts, sciences and technology for students in grades 6-8 and 9-12

University of Wisconsin-Stout will expand its Summer STEAM Experience this year, offering events for students in sixth to eighth grade as well as the camp for students in ninth to 12th grade.

The new Junior STEAM Experience will run online from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, June 21, to Friday, June 25. Students will learn about tabletop game design through activities with �� instructor Jay Little.

The Summer STEAM Experience is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday, June 14, to Thursday, June 17, online. Classes in science, technology, engineering, art and design will be featured. Camp activities and a college student panel are also planned as part of the camp.

Rebecca Thacker, program manager for Professional Education Programs and Services at ��, which is organizing the STEAM events, said registration for both experiences is open.

“This really highlights what �� does well,” Thacker said. “We have a great art program. We also have great science and engineering programs. We get to showcase that and give students an opportunity to experience that.”

Little, a game design and development lecturer in the School of Art and Design, also teaches tabletop game design, which is offered in both STEAM experiences. He said students receive a special kit of materials called the White Box, which provides dice, cubes, discs, tokens, and everything they need to help develop their tabletop games.

“We are going to help students flex their creative muscles and work together in small groups,” Little said. “We use fun activities like Mad Libs to design games. Everyone will be able to work together and then be able to leave with a copy of the game they created.”

Tabletop game creation requires creativity through art and design but also uses math skills and engineering to create a game that is challenging yet fun to play, Little said. Students will also be able to continue creating other game ideas they have with the kits.

Little said he enjoys teaching students during the STEAM experiences. “I love games so much,” Little said. “One of my favorite things to do is share gaming with others.”

As a youth, Little was bullied and found his social group through role playing games, which helped build his confidence, he noted.

The STEAM experience for older students will offer six tracks, Thacker said.

A new track this year is music and math with �� . Director of Choral Activities Jerry Hui. In the track participants will learn the math and physics of sound, create new musical instruments with software synthesizers and teach a computer how to create new music through programming and algorithm.

Other tracks include:

Tabletop game design with Little
Human anatomy, Dr. Alexandra Hall, senior lecturer in the biology department. Campers will get an inside look at human anatomy, including their own cells, and will learn microscopy and staining techniques. Campers will be mailed a box of supplies.
2D animation, with Jesse Woodward, lecturer in animation and digital media. Participants will produce 2D animation using industry-standard software. By the end, students will have produced an animation that will be featured online.
Video game design, Andrew Williams, associate professor in Bachelor of Fine Arts game design and development-art. Students will learn the end-to-end process of creating video games and the skills needed to bring them to life using the same techniques as the professional game designers.
Interior design, Shelley Pecha, professor and program director in interior design. Students will design a living space for their favorite celebrity and learn about project programming, the design process, space planning and creating a color palette. Campers will be mailed a box of supplies.

Scholarships for the entire cost of the camps are available to students in the Eau Claire, Menomonie and Eleva-Strum school districts. Six students who attend the Grantsburg school district qualify for the Parker-Hannifin Scholarship that covers the admission cost. To learn more about scholarships email profed@uwstout.edu.

Camp open to 8th- to 12th-graders to learn art and design

University of Wisconsin-Stout ��. Summer STEAM Experience is full steam ahead as a virtual event Monday, June 15, to Thursday, June 18, for students in grades 8 to 12 interested in exploring career paths.

The Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics Experience will have three track offerings exploring art and design:

’Zine Making led by Professor Tamara Brantmeier in the art and art history department. It will focus on creating ’zines that share a personal story or self-portrait narrative.
3D Animation taught by Jesse Woodward, lecturer in the design department. Participants will produce 3D animations using the same software used at Disney Animation Studios.
Video Game Design taught by Andrew Williams, associate professor and program director of BFA game design and development-art. Participants will learn the process of creating video games and the many skills needed to bring them to life. They will build a game through adding art, animation, programming logic and sound effects.

Students will also have a chance to hear from a college student panel about choosing a major, attending college and resume-building.

Rebecca Thacker, outreach program manager for Professional Education Programs and Services, said �� has the resources and knowledge to run the camp virtually.

The camp will have about 30 participants. Registration is open until Thursday, June 11. The experience costs $150. Scholarships are available for students in the Menomonie, Eau Claire and Eleva-Strum school districts to attend at no cost.

This year, two students can attend from the Grantsburg school district through funding from Parker-Hannifin, Thacker said.

Dave Beck, �� . director of the School of Art and Design and associate dean of the College of Arts, Communication, Humanities and Social Sciences, said �� and the School of Art and Design strive to find creative solutions to problems.

“These experiences are drawing on the expertise of our art and design professors, while using the technology and resources that Stout is so well-known for as Wisconsin ��. polytechnic institution,” Beck said. “We feel that offering virtual experiences in art and design to middle and high schoolers during the summer months is especially important, given that so many summer schools and camps have either been cancelled or greatly reduced. This is Stout ��. way of giving back to the community, through creativity and technology, all within a virtual college setting.”

STEAM Camp started in 2018 after two camps that started in 2016 — STEM, and Art and Design — combined. However, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the event had to go virtual for the safety of participants.

The virtual experience will give students an opportunity to learn while social distancing. “It will also allow those not living in our local area to attend. We could have anyone from anywhere attend,” Thacker said.

The experience is sponsored by Xcel Energy, Phillips Medisize and Parker-Hannifin.

Campers will also have an opportunity to interact with a head counselor and three assistants, giving them more opportunities to meet college students.

Program was open to sixth- and seventh-graders this year for the first time

Soon-to-be Menomonie Middle School students Tanner Husby and Ryan Xu helped guide filament being extruded for 3D printers recently at the University of Wisconsin-Stout plastics laboratory as part of the Summer STEAM Experience camp.

This is the first year the camp, which started in 2016, has welcomed sixth- and seventh-grade students to some of the tracks. The camp ran June 16-20.

The camp offered nine tracks overall focusing on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. Younger students were welcome as day campers. Students in eighth to 12th grade could take part in day camp or stay overnight on campus.

“I enjoy learning about technology and creating plastics,” said Husby, who attended the Technology Engineering and Plastics track. However, his favorite part was being able to visit Cardinal FG ��. glass plant in Menomonie ��. industrial park.

“All I knew was sand was one of the ingredients,” Husby said. “I learned a lot about glass.”

Xu, the son of �� plastics engineering program director Wei Zheng who attended the Technology Engineering and Plastics track, said one of his favorite activities was using 3D printers. “I like it because I get to make stuff from a little piece of plastic string,” Xu said.

RaeLinne Weiss, a seventh-grader at Menomonie Middle School, was pleased younger students were able to join STEAM camp this year. “We can learn to make things now instead of when we’re older,” she said, noting she would encourage other students to attend because it is fun.

Noah Heil, a freshman at Menomonie High School, attended STEAM camp for the first time. He showed a Fred Flintstone character he made using injection molding. He supports having younger children there to learn.

“I think it ��. good for them to learn to make things at a younger age,” he said. “They can keep going and going and advancing in technology.”

Zheng said she thought the students blended well during the camp. “I think it ��. great,” she said. “They learn how to work with the more senior students in the group, and they got to learn from their peers as well.”

In the Applied Arts Building, Kari Tarr, a senior lecturer in the School of Art and Design fundamentals area, taught students classical drawing techniques. As the students sketched a still life of cylinders and bottles with charcoal, Tarr said she was impressed by their motivation to learn new skills. “They are engaged and motivated and they are working hard,” Tarr said.

The students in that track also created a zine, a self-published magazine, during the camp.

Tarr liked the mix of structured time in classical drawing and the opportunity for students to create and express themselves with the zine. “That creative outlet is great at this age,” Tarr said.

Kassidy Welsch of Menomonie, who is home-schooled, said she enjoyed the camp. “I wanted to get better at drawing,” she said. “I enjoyed learning different drawing techniques and how to execute them. It ��. just been a really good experience.”

Other tracks included #D Animation, 3D Modeling in May: Robot Design, 3D Printing and Jewelry, Human Anatomy Exploration, Interior Design, Video Game Design and Wood is Good.

Students for the camp are sponsored by both the Menomonie Area School District and the Eau Claire Area School District and the camp is part of the Eau Claire Area School District Summer School Program.

New programs include human anatomy, 3D modeling, technology engineering

A University of Wisconsin-Stout Summer STEAM Experience camp will welcome younger students this year for day camps.

Sixth- and seventh-graders can take part in the summer youth camp in the following tracks: Industrial Design; Infinite World of Plastics; Sculpture Design; Wood is Good.

Camp is Sunday, June 16, through Thursday, June 20, and has 13 tracks overall focusing on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

Younger students are welcome as day campers in the designated tracks. Students in eighth to 12th grade may choose to take part in the day camp or stay overnight on campus.

“This is a great opportunity for students to experience campus life with all these amazing program offerings taught by our expert faculty,” said Anna McCabe, program manager of the Summer STEAM Experience Camp. “We have a lot of fun activities planned. It will be a great experience for all campers.”

On Sunday, June 16, an introductory day camp in the afternoon lets campers experience the Ropes Challenge Course. Day camps run from 8:35 a.m. to 4:15 p.m.; campers will be in labs and classrooms with faculty. Overnight campers stay in dormitories and experience cafeteria dining and on-campus living.

A STEAM Camp showcase is scheduled from 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, June 20, for parents and other family members to see campus and what campers have been working on all week.

The STEAM Camp started in 2018 after two camps that started in 2016 – STEM, and Art and Design -- combined.

STEAM day camp is free to students in the Menomonie school district through a partnership with the district. Students can choose to stay overnight for an additional $150. The Eau Claire school district also allows some students to attend free based on funding available. However, the number for this year ��. camp has been reached, McCabe said. Cost to attend the camp is $450 for overnight and $300 for day camp.

New tracks this year include Human Anatomy Exploration taught by Dr. Alexandra Hall, staff physician and senior lecturer in the biology department, which will teach students about human anatomy and working with specimens and cadavers in the Cadaver Lab. The track has already filled for the camp.

Another new track is 3D Modeling in Maya: Robot Design taught by Nathan Clark, animation and 3D modeling instructor in the School of Art and Design. Students will learn to model, texture and render memorable, believable robots in 3D space.

A track on technology engineering taught by Paul Craig, lecturer in the engineering and technology department, and David Ding, associate professor in the operations and management department, will focus on technologies used in future manufacturing such as robotics and automatic inspection.

Wood is Good, Jerry Johnson, engineering and technology
Industrial Design, Jennifer Astwood, industrial design
The Infinite World of Plastics: materials, mold and processing, Wei Zheng, plastics engineering program
Board Game Workshop, Jay Little, design
3D Printing and Jewelry, Vincent Pontillo-Verrastro, art and art history

Tracks already filled include:

Classical Drawing Techniques and ’Zine Making, Tamara Brantmeier, art and art history
Video Game Design, Joshua Seaver, design
Human Anatomy Exploration, Alexandra Hall, biology

Zheng, director for the plastics engineering program, believes the STEAM camp helps �� promote and showcase the university ��. programs to the community and helps attract students. “Exposing the programs to younger kids allows them to start thinking about their interests and their future career paths,” Zheng said.

In the plastics engineering tracks, students will learn basic material selection, product design and make some plastic products using various techniques, Zheng said.
