�� has announced that a new provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs will begin on Aug. 1.

Dr. Latha Ramakrishnan, currently special assistant to the provost at Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania, will advance strategic priorities and foster academic initiatives that reflect �� . status as Wisconsin ��. ��.

“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Ramakrishnan to ��. She brings the background, ideas, and experience that will help advance �� . distinct polytechnic identity and support student success,” said Chancellor Katherine Frank, who announced the appointment on Feb. 16.

With a focus on collaboration and innovation, Dr. Ramakrishnan will work closely with faculty, staff and stakeholders to address regional and state needs and support student success.

“I am excited to join �� and contribute to its vibrant polytechnic identity,” Ramakrishnan said. “I am inspired by the ‘Do More on Day One’ spirit, and I look forward to partnering with all stakeholders to lead Academic Affairs. Together, we will advance academic excellence in alignment with our core polytechnic tenets to better serve our students.”

Glendalí Rodríguez, who has served as �� . provost and vice chancellor for Academic Affairs since 2019, will return to the faculty within the Operations and Management Department.

Ramakrishnan will come to �� with considerable academic and administrative experience, having served as a professor, chairperson, program director, dean and associate provost (interim). During her tenure at St. Cloud State University and Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania, she secured or contributed significantly to securing more than $9 million in external grants, including several National Science Foundation grants, which provided scholarships in STEM, improved student success, and enhanced research infrastructure. At Commonwealth University, she established the college ��. first external advisory board and empowered faculty to lead the development of the first college strategic plan.

During her interview process at ��, Ramakrishnan demonstrated a strong commitment to student success and excitement to lead the Academic Affairs unit in advancing �� . polytechnic mission. Ramakrishnan holds a Ph.D. in physical polymer chemistry from the Indian Institute of Science; a M.S. in chemistry from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras; and a B.S. in chemistry from the Sri Sarada College for Women. She was a Postdoctoral Fellow and a Research Associate at Cornell University from 2000 to 2006, including a year as Epilepsy Foundation and Milken Family Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow.

The gift of a board game, a visit to a historic distillery and a sleepless night during a sabbatical in Scotland combined to inspire �� Professor Dave Beck to create a successful game design business.

These experiences also transformed Beck ��. approach to teaching students in �� . game design and development programs. Whether they come from the artistic or computer science sides of game design, students make their way to Beck ��. Introduction to Game Design course, where he stresses the fundamentals. And good design, he emphasizes, doesn’t have to start on a computer.

“It ��. really the concept of the design and creating a system and a series of problems and challenges for a player to overcome,” Beck said. “That can happen on paper, or it can happen in pixels.”

The first assignment happens on paper, a common first step for budding game designers, as Beck ��. students use cards, dice and other components to fashion paper prototypes. Paverson Games, Beck ��. acclaimed indie game design business, also started in analog fashion.

Back in 2014, Beck — who has academic expertise in 3D modeling, virtual reality, animation, level design and game engines — was given a board game by his wife, �� Senior Lecturer Emily Beck, as a gift. Initially skeptical, he was quickly enchanted by Dominion, a medieval-themed deck-building game, which was very different from the frustrating, luck-based board games he remembered from childhood. Soon, he said, “I fell deep into a rabbit hole” and acquired a basement full of similar board games.

Beck isn’t alone in having his imagination captured by the hobby: Tabletop gaming has undergone a renaissance over the past decade or so, expanding into a $27 billion industry worldwide with projected annual growth of more than 10%. The trend has been driven by the increased availability of well-designed, attractive games like those produced by Paverson Games.

Yet for Beck, board games remained a pastime rather than a vocation for several years until he found himself on sabbatical in Scotland with his wife, who was teaching there for a semester. Amid working on his own 3D augmented reality project, Beck found time to play board games and tour some of Scotland ��. legendary distilleries.

It was shortly after one such tour that Beck spent a sleepless night pondering a potential game. “Probably around midnight, this idea, truly a lightbulb moment, popped in my head about how I could represent the distilling process through a game mechanic, which is basically shuffling and removing cards to represent cutting out the heads and the tails,” he said. (In this context, “heads” and “tails” are byproducts from the beginning and end of the distillation process.)

The next morning found Beck scribbling notes and fashioning pieces of paper — much like his Introduction to Game Design students do. “The second I came up with this idea, I was cutting things out,” he recalled. “It was just like this energy inside me and this kind of joy — I don’t know how to better describe it — that I hadn’t felt in years.”

After more designing and play testing, Beck returned to Wisconsin with the basis of Distilled, which is marketed as a “spirited strategy game” in which players compete to become master distillers by creating whiskey, gin, rum and other spirits. He launched a Kickstarter in 2021, which raised its original goal of $18,000 in just 23 minutes. Ultimately, more than 8,000 backers pledged nearly $550,000 toward the project.

To make the game a reality, Beck leaned on the talents of some of his �� colleagues. Professor Erik Evensen, program director for the B.F.A. illustration program, created the artwork and served as graphic designer for the project. Professor Seth Berrier, program director in B.S. computer science (game design and development concentration), helped create an online version of Distilled, which allowed users to play test the game and give feedback. Meanwhile, Associate Professor Cody Reimer, program director for B.S. game and media studies, used his technical writing skills to edit the rulebook and game text.

More than four years after the original Kickstarter launched, Distilled has sold more than 50,000 copies across 10 different languages. (A cocktail-themed expansion launched last fall raised an additional $631,000 on Kickstarter.) And Beck ��. business has gained attention beyond board-gaming circles, including being named one of the best strategy board games of the year by The New York Times and landing Beck a profile on a recent episode of the PBS Wisconsin series “Wisconsin Life.”

Just like his board game collection, Beck ��. board game output didn’t stop at one. He co-designed a second game, Luthier, in which players take the roles of 18th-century instrument makers during the height of the classical music era. This meticulously detailed game hit the market in 2025 after another successful Kickstarter, which raised $790,000. Two more Paverson Games titles by different designers are now in the pipeline: Class of ’89, which focuses on creating a high school yearbook (with artwork by Evensen), and Ringyō, a forestry game set in feudal Japan (designed by former �� Lecturer Charlie McCarron).

�� game design students have also played a role in the business as paid interns. Most recently, Amanda Gagnon, a junior from Racine, interned for Paverson Games over the winter break. The internship reinforced skills Gagnon learned in her coursework, from updating and formatting files to assembling physical prototypes. The experience, she said, gave her a solid foundation in working on both digital and tabletop games.

“I think a lot of people that first begin to pursue a game design degree — myself included — start out really excited to create the art, the code or the narrative,” Gagnon said. “However, when you’re introduced to tabletop design, it really makes you focus on the mechanic design and player experience instead. Learning more about tabletop design and working with a tabletop company emphasized to me the importance of play testing and making sure players enjoy your game, which can sometimes get missed in digital game design.”

All of the Paverson Games titles rely on strong themes that attract players and keep them fascinated, not frustrated. “I believe very strongly in theme-driven design,” Beck said. “It ��. something that not only helps people learn the game a little easier, because they can understand the real-world connection, but also it oftentimes will have more of a lasting impression that will allow you to really dive deeper into the art of that game as well to create that world for the player.”

Such focus has made Beck a success in both the classroom and the world of board gaming. “It ��. crazy to think how one sleepless night can literally change your life,” he said.

Dave Beck is a practicing game designer and owner of the board game company, Paverson Games. He is the designer of the award-winning board game Distilled: The Spirited Strategy Game and co-designer of Luthier: The Art of the Instrument.

Beck has also designed video games, such as Tombeaux, released on Steam in 2018. This interactive experience investigates the convergence between cultures and the environment across a few hundred years of midwestern American history.

Gallery 209 rotates exhibits on a weekly basis. Located in the Applied Arts building on the second floor, exhibits are reserved for Senior Thesis Exhibitions, as well as master ��. in design students, design and fine art classes and student organizations. An Advanced Printmaking exhibition will be held in Gallery 209, April. 10-12, Destination Weekend.

The Library Art Lab, on the first floor of the Robert S. Swanson Library & Learning Center, showcases student artists, faculty and campus collaborations. Exhibitions include applied research, capstones, clubs and classwork. There are two exhibitions each semester.

Civic dialogue

�� . Center for Applied Ethics will host guest speaker J.P. Messina, professor of philosophy at Purdue University. Messina will present on “Workplace Censorship” from 3 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, in the Memorial Student Center Ballroom A. He will discuss the legal environment that protects employers’ rights to fire employees, even while exercising freedoms guaranteed under the First Amendment. And if employer censorship becomes widespread, how discourse can suffer as people withhold their views from the public sphere.

Center for Applied Ethics

Our mission is to increase and enhance ethical conversations across the campus community.

The Center for Applied Ethics, Office of Student Opportunity & Excellence, and the Freedom of Expression Committee are hosting a series of events, “Enhancing Campus Culture: Free Expression and Civil Discourse,” funded by the Wisconsin Institute for Citizenship and Civil Dialogue and the Menard Center.

Forty to 60 students will participate in four discussion dinners over the course of the year. Each dinner will center around a controversial moral or political issue, with tables facilitated by faculty.

The non-partisan, non-ideological Menard Center is dedicated to the study and discussion of civil liberties and related institutions and innovations through scholarly inquiry, educational activities and community outreach.

Film screening and literary discussions

Continuing with Reading Across Campus’ focus on Jane Austen ��. “Pride and Prejudice,” the Literature Committee will host a film screening and discussion from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m., on Wednesday, Feb. 18, in Harvey Hall Theatre. A short discussion led by professors Joan Navarre and Kristin Risley will follow the film.

Featured author Dasha Kelly, a former Wisconsin Poet Laureate, will present on her most recent anthology, “A Line Meant: A Collaborative Poetry Collection,” from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Monday, April 20, in Harvey Hall Theatre. Hamilton has worked with incarcerated populations, helping groups write and publish poetry. Her talk is co-sponsored by the College of Arts & Human Sciences and will connect to the theme of “Helping Humanity Flourish.”

University Theatre

University Theatre will present “Something Rotten,” directed by Audric Buhr, at Harvey Hall Theatre. Set in the 1590s, brothers Nick and Nigel Bottom are desperate to write a hit play but are stuck in the shadow of that Renaissance rock star known as “The Bard.” When a local soothsayer foretells that the future of theater involves singing, dancing, and acting at the same time, Nick and Nigel set out to write the world ��. very first musical. But amidst the scandalous excitement of opening night, the Bottom Brothers realize that reaching the top means being true to thine own self, and all that jazz.

The spring choral program, “Questions,” will be a musical exploration of “why?” As graduates move on to build a better world, they will be faced with many uncertainties. Questions come in many forms: rhetorical, spiritual and intellectual. Fear, awe and wonder lead to different kinds of questions.
The Symphonic Band, directed by Erika Svanoe: Sunday, April 26, 2 p.m., in the Memorial Student Center Great Hall. “Echoes of Eco” will feature music about our national parks, the wilderness and the great outdoors, including “Diamond Tide” by Viet Cuong, “Wilderness” by Cait Nishimura, and a music and video presentation of “National Park Suite” by Ryan Fraley. The concert will also feature a new piece by Svanoe titled “Winds Across the Water.”
Blue Devil Jazz Orchestra, directed by James Anderson: Saturday, May 2, 7 p.m., at Harvey Hall Theatre. Heritage Hall renovation, AI innovations, industry-sponsored focus among year ��. notable headlines

It was a year of big things at ��, from breaking ground for the biggest construction project in university history to posting some of the most notable enrollment growth in the Universities of Wisconsin to being chosen as the area ��. Large Business of the Year.

In 2025, Wisconsin ��. �� also earned big accolades, such as being named one of America ��. Best Colleges by Money Magazine for the second year in a row and made big waves by continuing to break down barriers and redefine higher education for the 21st century.

These milestones are just some of the university ��. Stout Story highlights as it looks back at 2025.

Reinvigorating renovations

The university began its fall 2025 semester with a groundbreaking for the long-awaited $144.3 million Heritage Hall renovation project, which will transform the half-century-old building into a cutting-edge educational hub to help meet Wisconsin ��. workforce needs. The project, which is expected to be finished in 2028, will be paid for with funding from the state as well as $13.5 million donated by university supporters, industry partners and alumni.

‘Power of Partnership’: �� celebrates groundbreaking for $144M Heritage Hall renovation

Chancellor, lawmakers, community and campus leaders join to highlight project that will boost Wisconsin workforce

“The renovation of Heritage Hall is a direct reflection of our mission as Wisconsin ��. ��: to provide career-focused, applied learning and research, and industry collaboration that meets the evolving needs of the state ��. workforce and communities,” Chancellor Katherine Frank said.

The campus also looked forward to another major project, a $31.7 million revitalization of the Recreation Complex. Funded through the 2025-27 state budget as well as a record-setting $5 million gift, the renovations are expected to begin this year. And in October, �� celebrated the opening of a $1 million Esports Arena, a new high-tech home for the championship-caliber esports team.

Advances in AI

Artificial intelligence isn’t a stand-alone subject at �� — it ��. been integrated across all programs, a 360-degree approach to create tomorrow ��. AI-ready workforce.

“Equipping students from every major with AI skills is not only important but necessary,” said engineering and technology Assistant Professor Yuan Xing, who is working with applied social science Professor Tina Lee on a cross-disciplinary program focused on an AI-enhanced farming robot.

AI, fully integrated: �� . 360-degree approach to artificial intelligence embeds skills across all programs

‘Equipping students from every major with AI skills is not only important but necessary.’

The university ��. AI Fellows and AI Innovation Committee, led by faculty and staff, ensure AI is embedded into learning, operations and innovation, while directing AI integration, governance, ethics and literacy. Among the many examples of faculty engagement with AI include employing machine learning in engineering and manufacturing processes as well as comparing human and AI-generated written communication.

Assistant Professor Cami Banger, program director of business information technology and digital marketing technology, created a business technology class with AI “baked in,” while Professor Betsy Pudliner used AI-driven prompts to transform hospitality industry experiences into interactive online course content.

Meanwhile, a $647,000 grant from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation will allow �� . Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Artificial Intelligence – CAM-AI – to provide advanced manufacturing and AI support to small- and medium-sized manufacturers.

Upgrading STEMM spaces

The completion of a two-year, $7.4 million renovation project ensured that labs in the Jarvis Hall Technology Wing provide the technology, accessibility and visibility necessary for students to succeed in Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics & Management.

Some of the new equipment in labs in both Jarvis and Fryklund halls — including production-level 3D printers, a fully-integrated automated manufacturing system and more — was funded through a $3.1 million donation from the Ronald and Joyce Wanek Foundation. Machinery for automated manufacturing, 3D printing and more will impact thousands of students’ polytechnic experiences

Such campus labs create space for innovation, such as work by Associate Professor Kevin MacDonald, director of the B.S. construction management program, and his students to create innovative low-carbon concrete using blast-furnace slag, which was tested in April in a campus project.

Labs also provide workspaces for students like mechanical engineering senior Heidi Benningfield, who received more than tuition and an internship through the U.S. military ��. SMART Scholarship program. After graduation, she ��. guaranteed a job with the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command in Huntsville, Alabama.

Other students brought research on optimizing plant growth through the use of robotics to the national stage, while a faculty-student collaboration created software for making better 3D models of priceless objects in museums from Minneapolis to Amsterdam.

Army ROTC Northwoods Battalion students learn leadership theory, time management skills, basic soldier skills, map reading and other skills from experienced Army leaders. �� has a long-standing agreement with the Air Force ROTC program at University of St. Thomas, in St. Paul – a unique agreement among Wisconsin universities – that allows students to enroll in Air Force ROTC classes while completing their degrees.

Top design awards

While ��'s School of Art & Design celebrated its 60th anniversary, students from across degree programs celebrated top wins in state, national and international competitions.

Interior design senior Khendra Thompson rose to the challenge at the 12th Annual Steelcase NEXT Student Design Competition and won with her design of a 16,000-square-foot workplace spread across two floors in a Chicago office building, beating four other finalists from a field that began with 1,600 students from across the continent.

Interior design majors who entered the 12th Annual Steelcase NEXT Student Design Competition faced a lofty challenge.

To address the concern of microplastics in food and water, Master of Fine Arts in design student Ashley Jandro created a social awareness campaign called “MicroWhat?,” for which she received a Student – Integrated Consumer Campaign Silver Pin at the Minnesota AdFed awards, sponsored by the Advertising Federation of Minnesota.

A team of four packaging students won first place among university teams from around the globe in the 2025 International Molded Fiber Association Student Competition. They created a sustainable packaging solution for a waffle iron, previously packaged in polystyrene, and replaced the components with molded fiber.

The claustrophobic, cooperative game Dread Not, in which players try to survive a sinking submarine, won the award for Best Student Entry at M+DEV, the largest game industry conference in the Midwest. Dread Not was developed by a team of 15 game design students.

With a design inspired by her adventures with her black lab, Max, studio art major Jaelyn Logterman won the 2026 Wisconsin State Park and Forest vehicle admission pass design contest, announced by the state ��. Department of Natural Resources.

Two interior design students are working to ensure their peers have a more efficient, comfortable and warm experience at Helping Hand Food+ Pantry, the university ��. student pantry. Emma Walstra and Klaire Johnson, project co-leads, reimagined the pantry space to create an “atmosphere that reflects the care �� places in serving its students.”

In a cross-disciplinary collaboration, four groups of students in a Light Construction Methods class built two raised garden beds, one raised tool bench and one raised tool holder for The Neighbors of Dunn County, a senior living home. The project was part of a service-learning activity and was launched last summer during a new STEAM camp for high school students.

A team of animation and digital media students collaborated with Dunn County Humane Society to develop a public service announcement as part of the Animation Production junior capstone class. Their 72-second 2D animated film, “Stray,” was created to help advocate for pet adoption. The informative short features Bow, a stray orange tabby cat rescued during Wisconsin ��. bitter winter.

Industry-sponsored projects are standard practice

Arcadia-based Ashley Furniture sponsored multiple engineering student projects in 2025. A team of students, including Inspiring Graduates Luke Mertens and Zachary Morgan, designed an innovative nonstandard pallet stacker. Ashley Manufacturing Engineer Erik Kramer, the team ��. project manager, said, “The �� team built a better system, a better product for us. Now, with the team ��. documentation, our automation team can replicate their functional design to build six more stackers for our facilities.”

Students also developed toolless bed connections for Ashley and worked in eight cross-disciplinary groups to research market trends, ideate preliminary designs, test materials and build professional prototypes. The class traveled to Ashley for a tour of the facility and to present their prototypes to the R&D team.

Packaging faculty and student research is poised to help Madison-based Tricky Foods deliver its tasty but temperature-sensitive charcuterie boards coast to coast. Associate Professor Kate Liu of �� . packaging program worked with Tricky Foods to test the insulating abilities of two eco-friendly packaging options – one made of cornstarch, the other of recycled paper.

Three industrial and product design students were awarded a cash prize by Room & Board in exchange for the rights to produce their designs if they choose. The senior’ project focused on storage solutions for media, dining, living, entry, bathroom and kitchen systems.

Blue Devil athletes excelling

The �� Blue Devil women ��. basketball team ��. Cinderella run to the Final Four last March marked the team ��. best-ever performance in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. They completed their historic season with a 23-8 record, going 10-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletics Conference. Senior Raegen Sorensen became ��'s all-time leading scorer with 1,754 career points.

The inaugural women ��. flag football team hoisted the Midwest College Women ��. Flag Football League Championship trophy at the Minnesota Vikings’ TCO Performance Center in April. �� was a founding member of the collegiate league, which was kickstarted with support from the Vikings.

Future teachers organize on-campus competition for high schoolers

While the 2026 DECA District I Career Development Conference was held just over a week ago, students in �� . marketing and business education program are already planning next year ��. event.

For 54 years, �� has hosted the conference, which prepares high school marketing students for future careers by challenging them to apply critical thinking, problem-solving, teamwork and communication skills to individual and team events. Likewise, �� students in the Marketing and Business Education Association (MBEA) are challenged to develop and coordinate the conference, which drew more than 500 students from 18 regional high schools to campus on Jan. 10.

“The most challenging aspect of the DECA event is preparing to implement a large-scale conference,” said Professor Debbie Stanislawski, program director for B.S. marketing and business education and adviser to the MBEA. “Coordinating logistics and ensuring everything runs smoothly requires significant planning and teamwork.”

Among those doing that coordinating this year was senior Ali Hruby, a marketing and business education major from Kennan. She agreed that the immense amount of time and effort required to organize the event are a challenge. “However, I really enjoy working with my colleagues during the setup process and seeing the conference run successfully,” she said.

Through chapters in high schools and colleges worldwide, DECA prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in marketing, finance, hospitality and management. It has over 250,000 members in more than 3,900 high school chapters and 203 collegiate chapters. At the district event, participants competed in 20 individual and eight team events, encompassing topics such as accounting, entrepreneurship, business finance, restaurant and food service management, retail merchandising, sports and entertainment marketing, and more.

More than 500 students from 18 area high schools attended the Jan. 10 conference at ��.

Twelve-month effort

But long before the day of the conference, �� students had been hard at work for months, embodying the university ��. polytechnic mission by applying their skills to plan all aspects of the conference.

“Volunteering for DECA at �� is an incredible opportunity for marketing and business education majors,” said senior AnuTye Her of Eau Claire, president of the �� MBEA. “It allows students to gain valuable insight into how DECA operates while experiencing it from an adviser ��. perspective.”

After evaluating the just-completed conference, student organizers will make plans for the following year, including securing access to Memorial Student Center. Once the fall semester begins, MBEA members and officers will meet biweekly to keep the process moving.

Stanislawski said that coordinating the event “requires a diverse set of skills that mirror the real-world demands of teaching, advising and leadership.” MBEA students must do everything from implementing registration systems and setting prices to ordering awards and organizing opening and closing sessions — which includes securing keynote speakers and even making speeches to the attendees themselves. During the conference, she added, �� students help run the competitive events, facilitate social activities, make sure the awards ceremony goes smoothly and more.

�� freshman Victoria Birnschein was one of numerous marketing and business education majors who helped at the conference.

Hruby has helped plan the DECA conference for two years. “The day of the event is very busy and fast-paced,” she said. “We begin by making sure everything is set up and ready to go. As schools arrive, students gather in the Great Hall for the welcome session. Throughout the day, we help direct students, troubleshoot issues and ensure the schedule stays on track.”

This year, as social coordinator, Hruby helped keep the high school students occupied as they nervously awaited the events’ results. “My favorite part is watching students participate in their competitions and then seeing their excitement during the awards ceremony when their hard work is recognized,” she said.

Shaelee DeWitt, a sophomore marketing and business education major from Mondovi, said the conference was a hectic but fun-filled day. Though she was a first-time volunteer, not only did DeWitt help introduce keynote speakers, including Chancellor Katherine Frank, but she also helped tabulate competitors’ scores.

“I am excited for DECA Districts 2027 and can’t wait to make some improvements from this past year to make it even better experience for the students,” she said.

Winners and runners-up in each category advanced to the State Career Development Conference competition from Monday, Feb. 23, to Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Grand Geneva Resort and Spa in Lake Geneva.

Embodying the polytechnic approach

For Stanislawski, one of the most enjoyable parts of the conference is seeing the numerous �� graduates who are now high school DECA advisers. “Watching them lead and teach in their own classrooms is incredibly rewarding — it ��. a real showcase of the program ��. impact,” she said. “These interactions highlight how the hands-on experiences they had as students prepared them to become confident educators and DECA advisers, which is exactly what our polytechnic approach is all about.”

Most gratifying, however, is seeing students — both high school competitors and college organizers — succeed through their roles in the conference.

“This hands-on experience not only provides insight into what it will be like to guide students as future DECA advisers, but it also aligns with �� . polytechnic mission — giving students practical, real-world preparation for their careers as marketing and business teachers,” she said.

The marketing and business education program is part of �� . School of Education, which offers nine undergraduate and five graduate programs, including on-campus and online options, along with five certificates and three certifications.

Karaman Kabadurmus develops new economics course on AI in the Modern Economy

Assistant Professor Fatma Karaman Kabadurmus, with �� . social science department, researched how digital technologies and emerging tools, often described as “AI-enabled” or part of Industry 4.0, are reshaping how firms innovate, manage supply chains and compete in today ��. economy. A central focus of this work is how digitalization helped firms respond to the unprecedented disruptions of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through her research, Karaman Kabadurmus recently co-authored two book chapters in “The Palgrave Handbook of Supply Chain and Disruptive Technologies.” The chapters were “The Impact of Digitalization on Firm-Level Innovation Performance During the Pandemic” and “Revolutionizing Last-Mile Delivery: Discovering Disruptive Technologies and Innovative Solutions.”

Her chapters examine how supply chain digitalization influenced firms’ innovation performance during the pandemic. “The findings highlight that digital transformation helps firms adapt to shocks in logistics, inventory management, labor availability and rapidly changing demand,” she said.

Her research on last-mile delivery and Industry 4.0 critically reviewed emerging technologies, such as AI/ML (machine learning) applications, big data analytics, blockchain, IoT, digital twins, and autonomous systems, and evaluated their implications for efficiency, innovation, and implementation barriers in supply chain operations.

“This work builds on my broader research agenda in the economics of innovation. Rather than focusing on the technical design of technologies, my research asks economic and social science questions: When do firms adopt new technologies? What barriers do they face? And how do market conditions, competition and institutions shape innovation outcomes?” Karaman Kabadurmus said.

Impact on students and career readiness

Karaman Kabadurmus’ research has a direct impact on her teaching and students’ learning, particularly through a new course she developed, which launches this spring semester: Innovation and Artificial Intelligence in the Modern Economy.

“Employers want AI literacy,” Karaman Kabadurmus said. “As part of the Stout Core foundational education classes, I designed this course for students from all majors. They will learn to understand AI through an applied economic and social science lens.”

The course is an introduction to how digital and AI-enabled technologies shape innovation across sectors, such as health care, manufacturing, supply chains and more. Students examine real-world case studies, such as Amazon, Tesla and Google; observe changes in labor markets and firm strategy; explore ethical and regulatory dimensions; and study public policy debates that affect everyday economic decisions.

Stout Core ��. areas of expertise offer students opportunities to grow their global perspective, communication and critical thinking skills, ethical reasoning, and more, so they graduate ready to do more on day one.

Dr. Karaman Kabadurmus is an assistant professor of economics in the Social Science Department. She is also one of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) fellows for the 2024-2025 academic year.

From 2022 to 2023, Dr. Karaman taught in the John E. Walker Department of Economics at Clemson University. For more than 125 years, University of Wisconsin-Stout ��. stately Bowman Hall and its distinctive clock tower have served as landmarks for the campus and the community.

This holiday season, they provided artistic inspiration for a doctoral student who designed an annual greeting card sent by �� Chancellor Katherine Frank to hundreds of recipients. The image — created with a combination of digital tools, including an artificial intelligence assistant — shows the familiar campus building reimagined as a glowing 3D blueprint.

“I wanted the design to capture both my student experience and the character of ��,” explained Desiah Melby of Scandinavia, Wisconsin, who is pursuing an Ed.D. in career and technical education leadership. “My mind went to the clock tower — but I wanted to reimagine it to reflect the changes in education right now!”

Among those ongoing changes is the use of AI in higher education, which Melby is examining as part of her doctoral dissertation as well as in her professional career at Mid-State Technical College, which has four central Wisconsin campuses. Melby is a communications instructor at Mid-State, where she teaches courses in writing, literature, workplace communication and technical reporting while also leading institutional initiatives around AI integration in teaching, learning and faculty development.

‘A Blueprint for the Future’

“We are excited about this year ��. design, which shows, through student work, what it means to learn at a polytechnic university,” stated Frank, who sends out the seasonal cards annually. “Desiah ��. design is the result of applied research and learning. What she has produced tells a story about the tangible results of a polytechnic education that have an impact today through the card ��. design and message, and will continue to impact students through the innovative educational experience that Desiah creates in her own classroom well into the future.”

This is the third year that �� students have been invited to submit designs for the chancellor ��. seasonal card. Melby learned about the contest through a campus email, and she pursued the opportunity to connect her current academic pursuit with her personal curiosity and creativity.

“This design reimagines �� . iconic Bowman Hall clock tower as a glowing, holographic blueprint — blending history with innovation,” Melby wrote in an artist ��. statement. “The tower honors the university ��. proud traditions, while the futuristic aesthetic reflects its role as Wisconsin ��. only polytechnic and its forward-facing embrace of technology, creativity and applied learning.”

In addition to the artist ��. statement, the card carried the phrase “A Blueprint for the Future” emblazoned on its front.

Melby ��. creative process integrated both traditional and cutting-edge processes. After sketching an initial concept by hand, she refined the composition using a photograph in Adobe Illustrator. Next, she uploaded the image to Midjourney, a generative AI service, where she used iterative prompting to reach the holographic-style blueprint style she was seeking. From there, Melby brought the image into Photoshop, where she adjusted the color palettes, layout and background until she was satisfied with the result.

“For me, the refinement stage is always the most enjoyable: adjusting compositional balance, nudging elements and reworking details,” she said. “That ��. the ‘play’ part of the process.”

Melby completed her M.S. education with an emphasis in curriculum and instructional design at �� in 2023, and soon after decided to pursue her doctorate at �� as well.

“My master ��. experiences left me with a sense that my work wasn’t finished — I knew there were deeper questions I wanted to explore, especially around educational leadership, instructional design and emerging technologies,” Melby said. �� . Ed.D. program was a “perfect fit,” she explained. She is now writing her doctoral dissertation and expects to graduate in May.

“Crucially, the program lets me focus on my professional passions: innovative pedagogy, workforce preparation and the evolving landscape of digital learning,” she said. “It has also informed much of the work I am doing both in my classroom and leading AI in teaching and learning at my college.”

As a full-time faculty member and committee leader at Mid-State, Melby is grateful that �� . online model has allowed her the flexibility to integrate what she ��. learning into her professional life. “Instead of education happening outside of my work, it has genuinely shaped the work I do every day,” she said.

Likewise, both her work in the classroom and her academic interests lie at the intersection of traditional and AI-enhanced methods. “My dissertation examines how integrating AI tools into first-year writing instruction influences student perceptions of writing, confidence and learning,” she said. “I created a curriculum model that integrates AI literacy, workplace use cases and ethics into writing instruction. Instead of replacing critical thinking, I believe that AI can serve as a scaffold — supporting brainstorming, revision and idea development — when students are taught to use it transparently, responsibly and with academic integrity.”

Melby said she is surprised that her design was chosen but is grateful for the opportunity to represent her educational journey at �� in a unique way.

“This project embodies the heart of my dissertation: student learning and creativity supported by technology,” she said. “I used digital tools to extend, not replace, my artistic intent — much like I ask students to use AI to extend their thinking and writing, not bypass it. The design is my practical demonstration of human creativity augmented by thoughtful technological choices, which is exactly the paradigm I believe education must embrace.”

College is an important decision and graduating with a degree is an extremely rewarding experience. Whether you're completing coursework online or attending classes on campus, there may be times you have questions or are in a situation that requires assistance, such as:

Keeping Everyone Informed

The Dean of Students is one of the main points of contact for emergency incidents. Please follow the instructions below for connecting with your student or keeping the university informed of external situations that could impact your student's attendance.

Contacting a Student During a Family Crisis

Sometimes a family member might have difficulty contacting a student in a time of crisis, such as a medical emergency or a death in the family. All emergency inquiries during business hours should be directed to Dean of Students Office via phone at 715-232-1181 or via email. After hours, contact the University Police Department at 715-232-2222.

Student Crises & Absences

In the event of a short-term illness (less than 3 days) it is best for the student to contact their instructor directly. If the student is hospitalized or experiencing a difficulty that will keep them out of school for 3 days or more, please contact the Dean of Students Office via phone 715-232-1181 or via email. If a parent or family member is concerned about their student ��. health or wellness, please contact the Dean of Students Office.

A notification of student absences will be issued by the Dean of Students Office. Documentation is required. This notification does not change attendance policies put in effect by the instructor and is a courtesy memo only, letting the instructor know the whereabouts of the student. Using this process to determine excused absences and/or work assignments is determined by the instructor. It is the responsibility of the student to initiate contact with their instructor regarding any missed work or exams.

Campus Emergency Information

The university posts any large-scale campus emergency on our �� Alert Messaging System and website. Students will be notified by text message when there is an immediate threat to the health or safety of students.

Our Emergency Response Guide provides campus the tools to stay safe during emergencies.

Confidential Campus Health & Mental Health Resources

The Student Health Centre is conveniently located on North Campus and offers appointments for preventive and primary care needs as well as laboratory services, tuberculosis testing, and vaccines. Students can be seen for anxiety and depression and a consulting psychiatric provider is available 2 half days per month. Most services are included in the students segregated fees.

Student Health Centre

Counseling Center is staffed by licensed and trained counselors. It is located in Bowman Hall. Services offered include individual, couple, and group counseling. Alcohol education classes are offered also. There is no charge to students for this service.

You.uwstout.edu is a self-help and well being platform. YOU helps student navigate life and campus on their terms with independent goal setting, skill building, assessments and evidence based content on well-being topics. Through this web based application students can connect with a 24/7 crisis service available via call, text, or chat and can connect to Mantra teletherapy services which are available during the day, evenings, and on weekends.

�� Hazing Policy

1.0 INTRODUCTION

The University of Wisconsin-Stout is committed to promoting a safe and healthy campus environment, where individuals are free from hazing. The purpose of this policy is to define hazing at �� and establish requirements for hazing education, reporting, and response in accordance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act.

2.0 SCOPE OF POLICY

This Policy applies to all employees, registered student organizations (RSOs), students, student groups, and individuals who volunteer with RSOs and student groups.

3.0 DEFINITIONS

3.1 REGISTERED STUDENT ORGANIZATION (RSO):

A group, composed mainly of, and directed by, students, consisting of at least four students and an advisor, and which has filed all appropriate registration forms with the Involvement Center in the Memorial Student Center and been confirmed by the Involvement Center as meeting the eligibility criteria for registration, and is active and in good standing.

3.2 STUDENT GROUP:

A group of at least two students that is established or recognized by the university, but the group does not meet the definition of a registered student organization. Examples include, but are not limited to, athletic teams and club sports (e.g., varsity sports, intramural sports), military organizations, honor societies, musical or theatrical ensembles, university bands and club sports

4.0 STATEMENT OF POLICY

In compliance with the Stop Campus Hazing Act and Wis. Stat. § 948.51, �� defines hazing as any intentional, knowing, or reckless act against an individual that endangers the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health of that individual for the purposes of initiation or admission into, affiliation with, or the maintenance of membership in any organization or group and that causes or creates a risk of physical or psychological injury, regardless of the individual ��. willingness to participate.

5.0 CRITERIA

5.1 HAZING CAN INCLUDE, BUT IS NOT LIMITED TO:

5.1.1 Brutality of a physical nature or the threat of bodily harm such as assault, whipping, beating, branding, forced calisthenics, exposure to elements, sleep deprivation, confinement, or any other activity which could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.2 Forced consumption of any alcohol, food, liquid, drug, or other substance that could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.3 Soliciting a person to participate in or be actively involved in the planning of any act meeting the definition of hazing.

5.1.4 Any activity that constitutes the violation of university policies and/or federal, state, or local law (including ordinances of the City of Menomonie), or that causes another person to commit such a violation.

5.1.5 Acts that degrade, humiliate, embarrass, ridicule, or isolate such as requiring servitude, taking away cell phones or other devices, not allowing class attendance, requiring costumes or other apparel unless that apparel is part of a uniform for employment or a university or athletic program, confinement, or any other activity that could adversely affect the physical, mental, emotional, or psychological health or safety of the individual.

5.1.6 Causing, coercing, or otherwise inducing another person to perform sexual acts.

5.2 REPORTING

5.2.1 Campus security authorities as defined in Institutional Clery Act Compliance are required to report incidents of hazing to the university.

5.2.2 Allegations of hazing may be reported via the University of Wisconsin-Stout Incident Reporting Form

5.3 INVESTIGATION/REFERRAL

5.3.1 The Dean of Students Office is responsible for investigating and adjudicating allegations of hazing.

5.3.2 Individual students will follow student nonacademic disciplinary procedures outlined in Wis. Admin. Code UWS § 17

5.3.3 Registered Student Organizations will follow the disciplinary procedures outlined in Registered Student Organization Code of Conduct

5.3.4 Hazing allegations involving individuals who are not students will be referred to the appropriate office.

5.4 HAZING PREVENTION AND AWARENESS PROGRAMMING

5.4.1 Research-informed hazing prevention and awareness training will be made available to students, staff, and faculty. This training will include information about this policy and other applicable university policies, how to recognize and report hazing, and strategies for intervening when hazing is witnessed or known.

With the intention of becoming a therapist, Ava Allroggen earned her bachelor ��. degree at the University of Minnesota-Morris in 2023. She studied psychology and human services, as well as philosophy.

Ava Allroggen was named 2025 Outstanding Student Leader of the Year in spring 2025.

“I found that those ancient thinkers were counselors in their own right,” she said. “When I had my graduate interview with ��, I was blown away by the authenticity and passion for the field that I saw in the clinical mental health counseling faculty. I knew there was something different about this program and that I had to be a part of it.”

For her outstanding leadership, involvement and service on campus, Allroggen was named a 2025 Outstanding Student Leader of the Year. She earned her master ��. degree in clinical mental health counseling and crossed the commencement stage on Dec. 20 as one of 527 �� graduates.

“My goal is to become fully licensed, keep learning, and establish roots in the community. We are all searching for the good life. I intend to help people find it,” said Allroggen, who is interviewing for prelicensed counselor positions across the Twin Cities and western Wisconsin.

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

I had the opportunity to intern with both the UW-River Falls counseling center and Vance Creek Experiential Therapy, an equine therapy barn in Clayton. At the end of each week, it was cool to swap out my business casual for faded jeans and muddy boots.

I learned so much from my supervisors and coworkers, but the people who taught me most were the clients. Both sites completely rocked my understanding of therapy for the better, and I’m a better counselor as a result.

What stands out about your �� experience?

Dr. Julie Bates-Maves led a study abroad in Lisbon, Portugal, that dramatically changed how I understand substance use treatment and drug policy. Julie connected us with professionals both on the policy level and those working directly in the field. I was fascinated to hear how these experts were working to make drug treatment more effective and humanistic.

I also enjoyed arguing about counseling theory with Dr. John Klem while I was pouring coffee behind the counter at Raw Deal. Never a dull conversation with that guy.

How did your involvement on campus impact your experience?

I was the graduate assistant for the Student Counseling Center ��. Wellness PROs, Peers Reaching Out, a peer health education program. Through my involvement with PROs, I got to work with the coolest, most enthusiastic team of undergraduates and supervising staff.

I developed an in-depth understanding of the issues faced by college kids, which prepared me to work with the students at my internship at UW-River Falls. In 2025, I am proud to say Wellness PROs took home the Student Staff Team of the Year at the 2025 Leadership Awards.

I was also active in the philosophy department at Stout. I attended Professor Xan Bozzo ��. community Philosophy Cafes, hosted through the Center for Applied Ethics. I appreciated being able to sneak away from my coursework for a while and indulge in my philosophical roots again.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

The semester my mom was in treatment for multiple myeloma was pretty difficult. However, I am lucky to have many wonderful people in my life who gave me a shoulder to lean on during this time. I’m most proud of my mom, who, after battling cancer throughout the last year, is officially in remission.

My advice for everyone? Take out your phone and tell someone you love them. Connection is all we have.

Sophia Moore knew from a very young age that she wanted to work in public policy and law. With her passion, she pursued an applied social science degree at ��, and she became an advocate for student voices.

Moore served as a student senator for the Stout Student Association, later becoming a vice chair and then director of Legislative Affairs. She was a civic engagement student lead at the university ��. Involvement Center, a student orientation leader for incoming first-year students, and sat on several committees, all charged with maintaining a student-driven campus, including the Student Retention Committee.

“Our campus is uniquely full of leadership opportunities, and our faculty and staff are so incredibly helpful in equipping you with the skills needed to become a great leader,” Moore said.

For her on-campus leadership, service, and involvement, Moore received the Samuel E. Wood Medallion, the university ��. highest nonacademic honor for students. She also received the Alec Kirby Memorial Award for Leadership in Social Justice, was named a 2025 Outstanding Student Leader of the Year, and was awarded the Tommy G. Thompson Leadership Scholarship, sponsored by the Tommy G. Thompson Center on Public Leadership.

Moore, of Red Wing, Minnesota, earned her B.S. in applied social science and crossed the commencement stage on Dec. 20 as one of 527 �� graduates, and served as commencement speaker for the College of Art and Human Sciences. She is applying for several congressional internships in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

“While my goal is to progress into legislature and public policy, I have interest in some policy-driven nonprofits in Minnesota,” said Moore, who chose �� because it was close to home and for its affordability.

How do you hope to make an impact in your field?

I hope to make an impact in my field in the same way I have done it here. There is no doubt in my mind that I made a difference on our campus. I hope to bring all the skills I have learned through being a campus leader in the vastly expanding job market.

People have yet to fully understand that most of the issues we face in day-to-day life stem from policy decisions made by the people we elect, and being a leading figure in changing legislation and voting outcomes for the betterment of our communities is such a passion of mine.

How has �� prepared you to work in your field?

I think humanities majors have a very different experience of the polytechnic advantage than the majority of majors at Stout. Meaning, I had very little time utilizing labs in my major, but instead Stout has allowed me to grow stronger in developing qualitative and quantitative research.

My major also does not require an internship to graduate, but that did not stop me from obtaining one. I interned for AmeriCorps Summer Impact Corps as a Housing Stability Fellow at a local advocacy center and domestic violence and homeless shelter.

This internship was life-changing for me and taught me the inner work for nonprofit organizations and the importance of community engagement and legislation regarding social welfare programs.

What stands out about your �� experience? 

The faculty and staff at this institution are singlehandedly responsible for my success in my time here. Stout quickly began to feel like home because of the connections and relationships I have been able to build.

Having a community of people rooting for your success not only gets you to the finish line, with the confidence to keep going even after you leave. Each of my professors knows me; they know what I need to succeed the best, what I enjoy and what I hate, not because I just willingly share all those details but because they take it upon themselves to get to know each of their students. This makes for such a comfortable environment tailored for success.

How did your involvement in campus impact your experience? 

Campus involvement was my entire experience. In my time at Stout, I have had the amazing opportunity of working in our campus Involvement Center, hosting events that impact large groups of students every week.

I was in student government, the Stout Student Association, for three years, which completely enhanced my academic career and my future career in public service. I have won more than five different awards and four scholarships, all outlining my success in student leadership on campus.

Without these experiences, I would not be the person I am today. Being able to interact with students and community members from all walks of life has been such a guiding experience within my academic major and life.

What challenges did you face in earning your degree and how did you overcome them? 

Like many students who attend Stout, I am low income and first generation, which comes with a lot of challenges regarding successfully navigating a four-year institution. A lot of my free time outside of student organizations or coursework was spent working to make a living while in college.

At one point, I was balancing four jobs on and off campus to stay afloat. What truly helped me and made my time here easier were Foundation Scholarships, taking a major financial burden off my shoulders.

What are you most proud of as you finish your degree?

I am most proud of the person I have become. I came to this school with a “just get by” mindset, taking a bare minimum approach from high school and assuming it would get me to graduation. I quickly realized this attitude would get me nowhere, as I spent days in my dorm with nothing to show for myself.

Becoming involved in our university is where I found real joy and happiness, changing the trajectories of students who were once where I started and getting them confident in becoming leaders themselves.

I am also very proud of the coursework I have done, witnessing tremendous growth in my writing and research.
