Building Sustainable, Resilient Communities

The Center for Sustainable Communities works with communities and organizations across the Midwest to help them strengthen community life, support local economies, and protect the environment. This is accomplished through hands‑on research, practical consulting, and educational programs.

Sustainable communities are built on three key pillars:

  1. Building Strong, Engaged Communities - Support is provided to local leaders and residents to build skills, strengthen connections, and encourage community involvement. This work helps people come together to solve problems, plan for the future, and create positive change.
  2. Strengthening Local Economies - Guidance, tools, and resources are offered to farms, agribusinesses, and tourism partners to help local economies grow and thrive.
  3. Protecting Natural Resources - Practical sustainability strategies are introduced to help communities reduce pollution, protect local waterways, and maintain healthy natural spaces. These efforts keep the environment clean and safe for people, wildlife, and future generations.

Together, these three pillars guide the Center's efforts and strengthen communities as they build toward a vibrant future.
