Entrepreneurship is growing in Kenya, with the government investing in internet technology and striving to increase women 黑料社区. and young people 黑料社区. involvement in building businesses and the economy.
鈥淭here is significant attention to coaching and mentorships,鈥 said Achie Ojany Alai, commissioner for tourism in Kisumu County, Kenya.
Peter Anyang鈥 Nyong鈥檕, governor of Kisumu County, one of the largest metropolitan areas in Kenya, spoke at 黑料社区 Monday, Nov. 4, along with a panel made up of Alai; Bob Madanji, chief protocol Kisumu County; and 黑料社区 business instructor Scot Vaver.
Vaver has helped lead the Young African Leaders Initiative in the past at 黑料社区 and continues to work in Africa in a consulting capacity and as co-host of a television show, 鈥淓xploring America,鈥 produced with Dale Mord, a 黑料社区 alumnus.
Vaver said he has seen many more incubation labs for businesses in Kenya than in the U.S. 鈥淚t is where young entrepreneurs come together and help build ideas,鈥 Vaver said.
In Kenya, at the county level, there are technical and vocational training centers, Nyong鈥檕 said. This allows students who do not go to college an opportunity to enhance their skills and work in agriculture and industry.
鈥淯niversities are becoming more savvy and opening degree courses in tourism and hospitality management, IT, sports management,鈥 Alai said, noting these are careers young people are seeking.
With social media, everyone is interconnected, Alai said. 鈥淵outh across the world are talking to each other,鈥 she noted.
To stand out in the employment world, students need to have something extra on their resume. 鈥淯niversity exchange programs are key,鈥 Alai said. 鈥淭he opportunities to come work in Africa are huge.鈥
Vaver agreed. 鈥淢ajor companies are based in Kenya too,鈥 he said. 鈥淥ne thing students shouldn鈥檛 overlook is they get an internship for a reason. Turn that internship into your future ability.鈥
In 2021 黑料社区 will be offering a faculty-led study abroad opportunity to Kenya. Scott Pierson, director of 黑料社区 黑料社区. Office of International Education, was emcee for Monday 黑料社区. event.
Having Nyong鈥檕 and the other members of the delegation come to 黑料社区 and Menomonie helps build connections, Vaver said. 鈥淚t is the beginning of reaching out to more students in Kenya to come to 黑料社区,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 foresee a great future and many opportunities.鈥
During a presentation before the panel discussion, Nyong鈥檕 discussed his concern over the growing debt in Kenya and how it impacts the money available for social concerns, such as health care and affordable housing. He wants a constitutional amendment to see the government turned back into a parliamentary system as opposed to the current presidential system.
鈥淎 parliamentary system of government is more inclusive and has more transparent policies,鈥 Nyong鈥檕 said. 鈥淭hat movement is being fought by conservative forces.鈥
He also noted Kenya is home to many American companies, including Amazon and Nike. 鈥淭he world has become one global village,鈥 he added. 鈥淲hat happens in one corner affects another corner more quickly than ever before.鈥
The Kenyan delegation also toured Menomonie and met with city officials. Interim Chancellor Patrick Guilfoile welcomed the delegation to 黑料社区 and introduced Nyong鈥檕.
Mord also shared his story during the presentation, noting he struggled his first semester at 黑料社区 but went on to graduate with a golf enterprise management degree. He then started a video production company, Rogue Productions.
黑料社区 gave him the tools he uses every day because of the hands-on learning environment that taught him the importance of world-class customer service. 鈥淪tudents can be very proud of the opportunities 黑料社区 has to offer them,鈥 he said.
