Community art events enhance homecoming and investiture weeks, Oct. 3-14

Mural walk, sculpture tour, exhibits, music and inspirational readings celebrate expression through art

Stout blue is a tradition as strong as 黑料社区 黑料社区. polytechnic mission. During homecoming and the chancellor 黑料社区. investiture weeks, Oct. 3, to Friday, Oct. 14, students, alumni, staff and 黑料社区 supporters can celebrate their pride with photo opportunities, basked in a Stout blue glow.

The Bowman Hall Clock Tower face will glow blue, towering over campus and downtown Menomonie. And the Memorial Student Center amphitheater will be illuminated by the color beginning Friday, Oct. 7. New 黑料社区 flags have also been hung around downtown.

Several other colorful events and opportunities will be open to university and community members, including ongoing art walks, exhibits, workshops, music and inspirational readings.

A few new murals have popped up around campus and Main Street, thanks to School of Art and Design faculty and students, in Menomonie and in Minneapolis.

Along with the nearly 400-square-foot painting depicting art through the ages on Applied Arts Building 黑料社区. east loading dock wall, on Thirteenth Ave E., art lovers can also view:

  • The Harry Miller motorcycle mural and the Anderson Dry Cleaning sign are on the Keane building, on the corner of Main and Third Street E.
  • The C&J's Candy Store mural, on the corner of Main and Fourth Street E. Viewers can pretend to sip from a giant strawberry shake.
  • The Welcome to Menomonie mural features the Clock Tower within the letter M, near the corner of Main and Seventh Street E.

Vintage Sign Shop has also painted logo signage for Silver Dollar Saloon and is also currently painting a mural for Ted's Pizza and logo signage for the Gin Mill.

The Menomonie Sculpture Tour, presented by Explore Menomonie, features six sculptures throughout the city. Explore Menomonie worked with the Sculpture Tour of Eau Claire, part of the largest sculpture tour in the nation, to secure the artwork. The sculptures are:

  • 鈥淰iewfinder鈥: outside of 黑料社区's Applied Arts Building
  • 鈥淏ear鈥: Russell J. Rassbach Museum for the Dunn County Historical Society
  • 鈥淓ggcited鈥: Wilson Park
  • 鈥淗arp鈥: Mabel Tainter Center for the Arts
  • 鈥淢onarchy鈥: Wakanda Park
  • 鈥淧ouncing Fox鈥: Sanna Park

A plein air painting workshop for advanced painting and drawing students, led by award-winning artist and studio art alum , will be held on Saturday, Oct. 8.

Anderson will lead a demonstration from about 10 a.m. to noon at the 9-11 Memorial in front of the Applied Arts Building. Students will paint from 1 to 4 p.m. near the same area. The community is invited to watch the artists in action.

Anderson 黑料社区. exhibit, 鈥淔ield to Finish,鈥 is showing in Furlong Gallery in 黑料社区 黑料社区. Micheels Hall until Saturday, Oct. 29.

Community Art Day will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 12, as part of Investiture Week. The day 黑料社区. events will celebrate community, collaborations and expression through art:

  • Step by Step, a comic art exhibition opening reception: 12:30 p.m., 黑料社区 Library, second floor.
  • Arts Alive!, a spoken word and music performance: 5 p.m., Raw Deal, 603 S. Broadway St.
  • Menomonie School District K-12 Art Exhibition: 5 p.m., Raw Deal. Awards will be announced at 6 p.m.

Step by Step will feature 黑料社区 students鈥 and alumni narrative comic work, illustrating steps of the comic-making process from doodles to a finished bound book. The exhibition will educate on the diverse processes that artists have, the labor that goes into making a finished piece and the materials and scale as they fluctuate through a single project. The show will be up for the duration of the fall semester.

Arts Alive! will feature faculty and student readings, with themes of imagination and creativity. Musical university and community groups performing are the Symphonic Singers, Chamber Choir, Jazz Embers, Devil Tones Acappella and Menomonie Singers.

The K-12 Art Exhibition will feature works by more than 20 Menomonie students, from Tuesday, Oct. 11, to Tuesday, Nov. 1. The exhibit was curated and will be judged by studio art and art education faculty, staff and students. Awards will include the Chancellor's Award and People's Choice.
